Archaeological excavations allow us to investigate archaeological heritage, but at the same time, they leadto its destruction. Multi-layer archaeological sites, which were settled during multiple stages of occupation andinclude several cultural horizons, represent a number of events. Their “decoding” is possible only by applicationof various methods – archaeological, natural-scientific, as well as the use of virtual modelling. Archaeologicalexcavations allow tracing of different stages of people inhabitation, whereas digital reconstruction gives thepossibility to visualize these stages and reconstruct disappeared archaeological heritage, destroyed in thecourse of people activity during long time. In this case archaeological field documentation, precise recording,further researches and reconstructions based on them are tightly interrelated. Combination ofdifferent methods gives the potential of preservingand telling the stories in a way that was never possiblebefore; creating time pictures of explorableareas with an unprecedented level of detail byusing animation and reconstruction methods,which could finally contribute a lot to interpretationof the sites. Computer-based visualisation seeks torepresent the existing state, an evidence-basedrestoration or a hypothetical reconstruction of acultural heritage object or site, and the extent andnature of any factual uncertainty. Such a combination of methodswas applied during researches of Neolithic sites in North-Western Russia, in Dnepr-Dvina region.Analysis made in Dnepr-Dvina areaallowed making virtual reconstructions of severalsites, tracing particularities of artefacts depositionand cultural layers formation, identifying particularitiesof paleoenvironmental situation duringdifferent periods and finally visualization ofancient sites.

Представлены данные о динамике одичания и натурализации древесных растений на Карельском перешейке в Ленинградской области. В результате проведенного исследования стало возможно оценить изменения за 4 года после последнего обследования и уточнить оценку видов, представляющих потенциальную инвазионную опасность. Для решения поставленной задачи в течение вегетационных сезонов 2017 и 2018 гг. обследовали территорию дендрария НОС «Отрадное» на предмет выявления видов, образующих самосев. Обследовали также прилегающие участки леса, соседние просеки и лесные дороги, луга и поля станции, со сбором гербарных образцов и описанием мест произрастания. Отмечали обилие и размеры, а также наличие цветения и плодоношения у самосевных особей, их удалённость от маточных растений. В результате проведенного исследования на территории научно-опытной станции «Отрадное» БИН РАН выявлено 90 видов древесных растений, образующих самосев (первый этап натурализации чужеродных или адвентивных видов). В то же время, к потенциально инвазионным видам, которые внедрились в естественные фитоценозы и в них закрепились, можно отнести 36 видов (3-4 этап натурализации). За прошедшие 4 года после публикации работы В. В. Бялта и др. список древесных растений, образующих самосев, пополнился на 14 видов (Acer tataricum, Aesculus hippocastanum, Juglans cordiformis и др.). Обнаружено 9 новых видов, внедрившихся в лесные сообщества окружающего гослесфонда (Chamaecytisus ratisbonensis, Euonymus europaeus, Sambucus racemosa и др.). У 32 видов зафиксировано увеличение размеров растений и количества самосева. В связи с потеплением климата заметно увеличилось число видов, дающих самосев, и, соответственно, возрастает число потенциально инвазионных видов во флоре Карельского перешейка. Поэтому особенный интерес представляют виды, уже внедрившиеся в примыкающий к дендрарию естественный лесной фитоценоз (инвазионные виды): Abies mayriana, Acer x subintegrum, Acer tataricum, Amelanchier florida, Amelanchier sanguinea, Amelanchier spicata, Chamaecytisus ratisbonensis, Cerasus maximowiczii, Crataegus maximowiczii, Crataegus monogyna, Euonumus europaeus, Euonymus macropterus, Fraxinus pensylvanica, Grossularia reclinata,Juglans ailanthifolia, Juglans cinerea, Juglans mandshurica, Larix sibirica, Lonicera maximowiczii, Lonicera prolifera, Malus domestica, Padellus pensylvanica, Physocarpus amurensis, Physocarpus opulifolius, Populus alba, Quercus robur, Rosa canina, Rubus odoratus, Sambucus racemosa, Spiraea chamaedrifolia, Spiraea salicifolia, Swida alba, Syringa henryi, Tilia × europaea, Tilia platyphyllos, Viburnum lantana. За ними необходим тщательный дальнейший мониторинг., In this paper the data on naturalization of woody plants at the Karel Isthmus and Leningrad region (North-Western Russia) are discussed. Depending on results of monitoring, there is a possibility to estimate some changes during the last 4 years. This is possible to clarify and evaluate the species which are of potential invasive danger. To settle this task during the vegetative seasons of 2017 and 2018 there were field observations and investigations of the whole territory of Otradnoje Research Station of the Komarov Botanical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences to check and develop species which produce self-sowing. The surrounding plots of forests, fields and meadows were also investigated, with collection of herbarium specimens and description of places of findings. The list of running wild species was clarified during the whole vegetative season, since the “height of spring” till the end of autumn. The ability, the sizes of plants, the presence of flowering and fruiting were fixed, as well as the distance from mother trees and shrubs. 90 species of woody plants producing the self-sowing (the first stage of naturalization) have been identified at the territory of Otradnoje Research Station (Priozersky district of Leningrad region). On the other hand, 36 species (3-4 stages of naturalization) may be considered as potentially invasive – they have intruded into the natural phytocenoses. During four years after research of V.V. Byalt et al. (2014) the list of woody plants producing the self-sowing has replenished on 14 species (Acer tataricum, Aesculus hippocastanum, Juglans cordiformis etc.). Nine new species penetrating into the surrounding natural forest communities have been discovered (Chamaecytisus ratisbonensis, Euonymus europaeus, Sambucus racemosa etc.). The increasing of sizes of plants have been checked at 32 species. With the warming of the climate the amount of species producing the self-sowing arises and the percentage of invasive species in fl ora of the Karel Isthmus has been enlarging. That is why the species intruding into natural forest phytocenosis (potentially invasive species) are of special interest: Abies mayriana, Acer x subintegrum, Acer tataricum, Amelanchier florida, Amelanchier sanguinea,Amelanchier spicata, Chamaecytisus ratisbonensis, Cerasus maximowiczii, Crataegus maximowiczii, Crataegus monogyna, Euonumus europaeus, Euonymus macropterus, Fraxinus pensylvanica, Grossularia reclinata,Juglans ailanthifolia, Juglans cinerea, Juglans mandshurica, Larix sibirica, Lonicera maximowiczii, Lonicera prolifera, Malus domestica, Padellus pensylvanica, Physocarpus amurensis, Physocarpus opulifolius, Populus alba, Quercus robur, Rosa canina, Rubus odoratus, Sambucus racemosa, Spiraea chamaedrifolia, Spiraea salicifolia, Swida alba, Syringa henryi, Tilia × europaea, Tilia platyphyllos, Viburnum lantana. This work focuses on the Stone Age of north-eastern Europe between 5500 and 1800 calBC. Called the Neolithic in Finland and the Neolithic and Eneolithic in north-western Russia, the period and its research are characterized both by the encounters and separations between ‘the East’ and ‘the West’. Still, despite more than 100 years of archaeological research, few inter-regional studies exist. This dissertation aims to provide an overview of the basic concepts of the terminology and periodization and outline a general (absolute) chronological framework of the area. In addition, a historical research review of the present state of affairs is provided. Four case studies aspire to illustrate the varying (east–west-directed) contact networks that existed in the area during the Neolithic. The second central topic of this work is the Neolithic itself. The research area is located on the border of two major traditions defining the period either based on the appearance of productive livelihoods (west) or pottery technology (east). However, the purely Eurocentric and techno-economical views of the Neolithic have been recently challenged. An evaluation of the used terms and criteria are presented here in the context of north-eastern Europe. The Finnish-Russian border and national prehistories have affected and still affect the study of prehistory in north-eastern Europe. They have prevented studying many prehistoric phenomena to their full extent and have restricted the understanding of inter-regional interaction — during much of the Neolithic, the research area was not the last outpost of the western world but rather the north-western part of a vast Eurasian contact zone. The traditional definitions of the Neolithic have placed north-eastern Europe in an anomalous and peripheral position, but understanding the development as genuinely varying and multipolar would facilitate a more holistic and value-free examination of the period. Tiivistelmä Koillis-Euroopan kivikautta aikavälillä 5500–1800 eKr. kutsutaan Suomessa neoliittiseksi, mutta Luoteis-Venäjällä se jaetaan neoliittiseen ja eneoliittiseen kauteen. Ajanjaksoa ja sen tutkimusta luonnehtivatkin ‘idän’ ja ‘lännen’ kohtaamiset ja erot. Huolimatta yli sadan vuoden tutkimushistoriasta on molempien alueiden aineistoja yhdisteleviä esityksiä olemassa vain niukasti. Tämän väitöskirjatyön tavoitteena on tarjota katsaus terminologian ja periodisaation keskeisiin käsitteisiin sekä hahmotella yleistä (absoluuttista) kronologiaa tutkimusalueella. Lisäksi työ esittelee nykytilanteen tutkimushistoriallisen taustan. Työhön kuuluu neljä tapaustutkimusta, joissa käsitellään Koillis-Euroopassa neoliittisella kivikaudella esiintyneitä (itä–länsi-suuntaisia) yhteysverkostoja. Työn toinen keskeinen teema on neoliittisen kivikauden käsite. Tutkimusalue sijaitsee kahden tutkimustradition rajalla, joista läntinen määrittelee aikakauden tuottavien elinkeinojen, itäinen keramiikan käyttöönoton perusteella. Puhtaasti Eurooppa-keskeinen ja teknologis-taloudellinen kuva neoliittisesta kivikaudesta on kuitenkin äskettäin kyseenalaistettu. Työssä esitellään yleistä terminologiaa ja pohditaan määritelmien käyttökelpoisuutta Koillis-Euroopassa. Suomen ja Venäjän välinen raja ja kansallinen esihistoriankirjoitus ovat vaikuttaneet merkittävästi kuvaan menneisyydestä. Ne ovat rajoittaneet ilmiöiden tutkimista niiden koko laajuudessa ja hämärtäneet alueiden välisiä yhteyksiä — suuren osan kivikautta tutkimusalue oli pohjoisella havumetsävyöhykkeellä vallinneiden verkostojen luoteisin osa, ei niinkään lännen viimeinen etuvartioasema. Perinteiset neoliittisen kivikauden määrittelykriteerit ovat asettaneet Koillis-Euroopan poikkeavaan ja perifeeriseen asemaan, mutta kehityksen ymmärtäminen aidosti varioivana ja moninapaisena mahdollistaisi periodin kokonaisvaltaisen ja ennakkoasenteista vapaan käsittelyn myös tällä alueella. Аннотация Работа посвящена каменному веку северо-восточной Европы от 5500 до 1800 лет до н.э. Этот временной промежуток соответствует периоду неолита по финской периодизации, или периодам неолита и энеолита для древностей Северо-Запада России. Для рассматриваемого периода характерны как сходства, так и различия в археологическом материале между западной и восточной частями региона, и, так же, наличие и сходств, и различий между «западной» и «восточной» научными школами в понимании этого периода и в подходах к его исследованию. Несмотря на более чем 100-летнюю историю археологических исследований, лишь в нескольких работах данная проблематика рассматривается на межрегиональном уровне. В диссертации представлен обзор основных существующих понятий и хронологических схем, очерчены общие (абсолютные) хронологические рамки периода неолита рассматриваемой территории. Кроме того, рассмотрена история формирования современного состояния изучаемого вопроса. На примере четырёх конкретных исследований проиллюстрированы варианты систем коммуникаций (между востоком и западом), существовавших на рассматриваемой территории в неолите. Другая основная тема исследования — неолит как таковой. Изучаемая территория является пограничной для двух основных научных традиций определения неолита, использующих в качестве главного критерия либо появление производящего хозяйства («западная школа»), либо распространение технологии изготовления глиняной посуды («восточная школа»). Однако в последнее время наметилась ревизия евроцентричных и исключительно технологических и экономических подходов к пониманию неолита. В работе приведён критический анализ понятий и терминов, используемых в исследованиях по северо-востоку Европы. Финляндско-российская граница и различия между национальными концепциями доистории оказывали и продолжают оказывать влияние на изучение доистории северо-восточной Европы. Они ограничивают исследование многих явлений доисторического прошлого во всей их полноте, в том числе процессы межрегионального взаимодействия. Ведь в действительности на протяжении большей части периода неолита рассматриваемая территория являлась не крайним аванпостом западного мира, а, скорее, северо-западной частью обширной зоны евразийских контактов. При традиционном понимании неолитической эпохи северо-восток Европы оказывается периферийной территорией с отличным от «нормального» ходом культурного развития. Однако понимание развития как действительно вариативного и полицентричного процесса способствует более целостному и непредвзятому изучению рассматриваемого периода. (Translation: D.V. Gerasimov)

International audience; Reconstructing the secular variation of Europe’s geomagnetic field over the past millennium is challenging because of the lack of recently acquired archeomagnetic data from Western Russia. In this paper, we report on nine new archeointensity values obtained from groups of brick fragments sampled in Novgorod (North-Western Russia) and its vicinities. These fragments were collected from churches whose precise ages range from the beginning of the 12th century to the end of the 17th century AD. All the archeointensity measurements were carried out using the Triaxe experimental protocol, which takes into account the thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) anisotropy effect. Intensity determinations were performed using fast and slow cooling rates for laboratory-TRM acquisition. The results confirm that the Triaxe protocol overcomes the TRM cooling rate dependence. The new data shows that geomagnetic field intensities in North-Western Russia have decreased in the past millennium. Comparisons were made with other data previously obtained in Western Europe, the Balkans and Russia, as well as with intensity values expected in Novgorod from global geomagnetic field models. These comparisons yielded three main results: 1) The new archeointensity data do not show the occurrence of large intensity variations in North-Western Russia, as those observed in the Balkan dataset. Conversely, they appear more compatible with Western European results, which suggests a limited non-dipole field effect across Europe during the past millennium; 2) Our data are weaker than the intensity values expected in Novgorod from the available global geomagnetic field models. This suggests that the field models are inaccurate for the Novgorod area; 3) A constant linear decrease of the geocentric axial dipole moment since 1600 AD does not appear compatible with our younger data.

Господствовавшая в Третьем рейхе идеология не только воспитывала и оправдывала жестокость в отношении миллионов людей, но и извращала понятия о профессиональном долге врачей, превращая некоторых из них из помощников страждущим, обязанных (согласно клятве Гиппократа) всеми силами бороться за их жизнь, в убийц., One of the tragedies of the Great Patriotic War is the extermination of patients of Kolmovskaya psychiatric hospital in the vicinity of Novgorod during the autumn-winter 1941-1942. This article is based mainly on declassified documents from the Novgorod FSB archive. For direct commission of medical crimes the Nazis often were in need of obedient executors. Usually, Russian collaborators gave their consent to exterminate civilians. There were several reasons for that. Some of the employees of the Soviet medical institutions believed in the necessity of euthanasia for the incurable mentally ill patients in the first place, while others did not hesitate to follow the orders of the occupation authorities. Others tried to survive under occupation at any cost, even at the expense of the death of patients. The prevailing ideology of the Third Reich not only promoted but justified violence against millions of people. It perverted the idea of professional duty of doctors, transforming some of them from helpers to the suffering (who are obliged, according to the Hippocratic Oath, to fight for patients’ lives by all means) to killers.

From the beginning of nineties, when significant changes took place, Russia began to elaborate new environmental policy and designed new patterns for responding the environmental problems. The paper tried to make a contribution to our understanding of environmental policy and policy processes within the Russia in general terms and to the nature of environmental agenda setting in Pskov region in more specific terms. This thesis is therefore explores environmental agenda setting process in Russia taking into consideration contemporary trends in the analysis of policy- making, such as inclusion of non-state actors as well as role of ideas shaping actors attitudes and behaviour. The purpose of the thesis is to study the relationship between transnational forces and interactions, national policy and local political developments and the role of various agents and institutions in agenda setting of the regional environmental policy-making. The frame of reference is constituted by a theoretical combination of the agenda-setting model with constructivist approach in order to broaden our investigation of the implications of environmental policy-making, impact of political culture upon construction of environmental issues, and transformations in the public policy. By focusing on Pskov region case, the paper identifies and discusses a number of reasons why environmental issues are found on the margins of the political agenda. A central argument is that in the absence of effective governance in the Pskov region, international agents together with regional interest groups formulate environmental agenda. The paper concludes that, even though, the mentality of environmentalism is set through the foreign assistance, the processes of learning from international cooperation may contribute to attainment of regional environmental objectives.
