The water footprint is an increasingly demanded environmental sustainability indicator for certifications and labels in agricultural production. Processing tomatoes are highly water-intensive, and existing studies on water footprint have uncertainties and do not consider the impact of different irrigation configurations (e.g., surface drip irrigation (SDI) and subsurface drip irrigation (SSDI)) and irrigation strategies. This study presents a two-year experimental investigation to determine the water footprint of processing tomatoes grown in southern Spain (Andalusia) and the impact of SSDI and deficit irrigation. Five irrigation treatments were established: SDI1 (surface drip irrigation without water limitation), SDI2 (surface drip irrigation without water limitation adjusted by soil moisture readings), SSDI1 (subsurface drip irrigation without water limitation and a dripline depth of 15 cm), SSDI2 (similar to SSDI1 but with mild/moderate water deficit during the fruit ripening stage), and SSDI3 (subsurface drip irrigation without water limitation and a dripline depth of 35 cm (first year) and 25 cm (second year)). Measurements included crop vegetative growth, leaf water potential, leaf gas exchange, nitrate concentration in soil solution, and crop yield and quality. The soil water balance components (actual evaporation, actual transpiration, deep drainage), necessary for determining the total crop water footprint, were simulated on a daily scale using Hydrus 2D software. Results indicated that SSDI makes more efficient use of irrigation water than SDI. The water footprint of SSDI1 was 20–35% lower than that of SDI1. SSDI2 showed similar water footprint values to SDI1 under highly demanding environmental conditions and significantly lower values (≈40%) in a year with lower evaporative demand. Dataset generated in the work “Impact of Irrigation Management Decisions on the WaterFootprint of Processing Tomatoes in Southern Spain” whose main objective was to determine the water footprint of processing tomatoes grown in southern Spain under different drip irrigation methodologies.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the robustness of infra-red thermometry to estimate stomatal conductance (gs) in grapefruit trees. For this purpose, the ability of several thermal indices to determine gs was tested for different: (i) irrigation strategies: full irrigation (FI) and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI), (ii) water sources: transfer water (TW) -optimal for agricultural uses- and saline reclaimed water (RW) and (iii) phenological stages: flowering-sprouting (FS) and fruit growth (FG). During two growing seasons, measurements of gs and canopy temperature (Tc) were taken in 14-year-old ´Star Ruby´ grapefruit trees (Citrus paradisi Macf.,). Air temperature (Ta) was also recorded and then the derived thermal indices: Tc-Ta, and CWSI (crop water stress index) were calculated. Subsequently, thermal-gs correlations were established at different averaged thermal data intervals, and VPD (vapour pressure deficit) and PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) conditions. The results indicated that both, water quality and deficit irrigation, affected negatively gs and Tc during FG. In addition, the highest r2 values in thermal indices-gs correlations were found when i) the thermal data was averaged 60 min before the gs measurement, ii) gs was measured over a wide range of VPD (between 0 and 3.5 kPa), and iii) PAR was 1200 µmol m−2 s−1. The ability of the thermal indices to estimate gs improved under RDI and RW conditions, when compared to the control treatment (TW-FI). Moreover, the thermal indices that more accurately estimated gs were Tc-Ta and CWSI in FS (P < 0.001), and the absolute values of Tc in FG (P < 0.001). Overall, thermal indices obtained by infra-red sensors could be a useful tool to estimate gs in grapefruit trees. However, irrigation treatment, water quality, tree phenological stage and environmental conditions (VPD and PAR) must be considered when interpreting thermal indices-gs correlations

Wastewater treatment plant effluents can be an important source of contamination in agricultural reuse practices, as pharmaceuticals are poorly degraded by conventional treatments and can enter crops, thereby becoming a toxicological risk. Therefore, advanced tertiary treatments are required. Ozone (O3) is a promising alternative due to its capacity to degrade pharmaceutical compounds, together with its disinfecting power. However, mass transfer from the gas to the liquid phase can be a limiting step. A novel alternative for increased ozone efficiency is the combination of micro-nano bubbles (MNBs). However, this is still a fairly unknown method, and there are also many uncertainties regarding their implementation in large-scale systems. In this work, a combined O3/MNBs full-scale system was installed in a WWTP to evaluate the removal efficiency of 12 pharmaceuticals, including COVID-19-related compounds. The results clearly showed that the use of MNBs had a significantly positive contribution to the effects of ozone, reducing energy costs with respect to conventional O3 processes. Workflow and ozone production were key factors for optimizing the system, with the highest efficiencies achieved at 2000 L/h and 15.9 gO3/h, resulting in high agronomic water quality effluents. In the current state of climate change, we must assume that abiotic stresses act together under natural field conditions, these will increase in the coming years. Therefore, in this report we investigated how sugar metabolism was affected under simulated field conditions, where plants faced high ambient temperatures and a low-quality water irrigation. Our studies were carried out on fruits of two tomato recombinant lines, a tolerant and a sensitive one exposed to the combination of heat and salinity. Two ripening stages (mature green and red ripe fruits) were used in our analyzes, where the gene expression levels of the main biosynthetic genes and transporters, enzymatic activities and compounds related to the synthesis, accumulation, and degradation of sugars in plants were analyzed. The tolerant line showed highly significant differences in red ripe fruits in comparison to the sensitive one under the simulated field conditions (35°C + 60 mM NaCl), with an overexpression of the genes SlFBP, SlSPS, SlSUS3, and SlNi. These expression patterns correlated with a higher activity of the enzymes FBP, SPS, SUS3, AI, and G6PDH, which resulted in the accumulation of fructose, glucose and UDP-glucose. Our results showed the advantage of using tomato recombinant lines for rescuing important traits, such as the resistance to some abiotic stresses, and for the identification of important molecular and metabolic markers that could be used to determine fruit quality in green or red maturity stages under detrimental environmental field conditions.

The application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in a mixed substrate is a vegetable production practice capable of improving plant productivity and sustainability of agricultural ecosystems. This study was conducted to determine the effect of a mixed substrate (agricultural soil with coconut fiber substrate) not enriched (S0) and enriched with 100 and 300 g m of the fungus Glomus iranicum var. Tenuihypharum (S100 and S300) in water relations, photosynthetic and nutritional capacity, as well as production and fruit quality in three tomato varieties “H4”, “H3” (susceptible to mycorrhization) and “Jacaranda” not susceptible to mycorrhization). Plants irrigated with moderately saline water (EC: 2.35 dS m) in a commercial greenhouse in Mediterranean climate conditions were used for this study. Results showed that plants grown in substrate S100 showed an increase of AMF colonization, leaf phosphorus concentration, leaf total carbon and total nitrogen content compared with those grown in S0 and S300, which induced an increase in photosynthesis and stomatal conductance. This positive response was less evident by the application of substrate S300. Variety “H3” had a decrease in leaf sodium content, as well as higher photosynthesis values. There were no differences in stem water potential between factors. The lowest fruit production was observed in the “H4” variety, while fruit firmness decreased by AMF concentration and in variety “Jacaranda”. Root and aerial biomass increased in plants grown in S100 and S300, with respect to S0. Therefore, the improvements in the physiological and nutritional behaviour of these plants resulted in increased vegetative growth, but not in increased production. Varieties susceptible to AMF infection were more colonized than “Jacaranda”, but there were not improvements in yield and fruit quality. 1. Climate change will increase heat and drought stress in many dryland areas, which could reduce soil nutrient availability for plants and aggravate nutrient limitation of primary productivity. Any negative impacts of climate change on foliar nutrient contents would be expected to negatively affect the photosynthetic capacity, water use efficiency and overall fitness of dryland vegetation. 2. We conducted a 4‐year manipulative experiment using open top chambers and rainout shelters to assess the impacts of warming (~2°C, W), rainfall reduction (~30%, RR) and their combination (W + RR) on the nutrient status and ecophysiological performance of six native shrub species of contrasting phylogeny in a semi‐arid ecosystem. Leaf nutrient status and gas exchange were assessed yearly, whereas biomass production and survival were measured at the end of the study. 3. Warming (W and W + RR) advanced shoot growth phenology and reduced foliar macro‐ (N, P, K) and micronutrient (Cu, Fe, Zn) concentrations (by 8%–18% and 14%–56% respectively), net photosynthetic rate (32%), above‐ground biomass production (28%–39%) and survival (23%–46%). Decreased photosynthesis and growth in W and W + RR plants were primarily linked to enhanced nutritional constraints on carbon fixation. Poor leaf nutrient status in W and W + RR plants partly decoupled carbon assimilation from water flux and led to drastic reductions in water use efficiency (WUEi; ~41%) across species. The RR treatment moderately decreased foliar macro‐ and micronutrients (6%–17%, except for Zn) and biomass production (22%). The interactive impacts of warming and rainfall reduction (W + RR treatment) on plant performance were generally smaller than expected from additive single‐factor effects. 4. Synthesis. The development of plant varieties with a better nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is a means for modern agriculture to decrease environmental pollution due to an excess of nitrate and to maintain a sufficient net income. However, the optimum environmental conditions for agriculture will tend to be more adverse in the coming years, with increases in temperatures, water scarcity, and salinity being the most important productivity constrains for plants. NUE is inherently a complex trait, as each step, including N uptake, translocation, assimilation, and remobilization, is governed by multiple interacting genetic and environmental factors. In this study, two recombinant inbred lines (RIL-66 and RIL-76) from a cross between Solanum lycopersicum and Solanum pimpinellifoilum with different degree of tolerance to the combination of salinity and heat were subjected to a physiological, ionomic, amino acid profile, and gene expression study to better understand how nitrogen metabolism is affected in tolerant plants as compared to sensitive ones. The ionomics results showed a different profile between the two RILs, with K+ and Mg2+ being significantly lower in RIL-66 (low tolerant) as compared to RIL-76 (high tolerant) under salinity and heat combination. No differences were shown between the two RILs in N total content; however, N-NO3− was significantly higher in RIL-66, whereas N-Norg was lower as compared to the other genotype, which could be correlated with its tolerance to the combination of salinity and heat. Total proteins and total amino acid concentration were significantly higher in RIL-76 as compared to the sensitive recombinant line under these conditions. Wastewater reuse presents a promising way to mitigate the risk to global water resources and achieve sustainability in water, especially in agricultural areas in the southeast of Spain, such as the Murcia region. However, the risks related to the presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) or pathogenic microorganisms in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent suggest the need to implement effective and relatively low-cost tertiary treatments. With this aim, a self-sustainable pilot prototype based on three combined modules (disc-filtration, granular activated carbon (GAC) bed adsorption and UV disinfection) assisted by solar panels was installed as an alternative tertiary treatment in a conventional WWTP in the Murcia region. The obtained results clearly confirmed the efficiency of the proposed prototype for CECs removal, and showed optimal results at a workflow of 500 L/h. In all cases, high removal efficiency was obtained for the different indicator microorganisms described in the recently published Regulation (EU) 2020/741 (E. coli, F-specific coliphages, somatic coliphages, total coliphages, and Clostridium perfringens). The protection of the activated carbon by disc-filters and the energy autonomy and self-operation of the prototype resulted in an efficient and economically viable methodology for its implementation in both conventional WWTPs and in isolated areas attached to crops.

Zinc (Zn) is considered an essential element with beneficial effects on plant cells; however, as a heavy metal, it may induce adverse effects on plants if its concentration exceeds a threshold. In this work, the effects of short-term and prolonged application of low (25 µM) and high (500 µM) Zn concentrations on pak choi (Brassica rapa L.) plants were evaluated. For this, two experiments were conducted. In the first, the effects of short-term (15 h) and partial foliar application were evaluated, and in the second a long-term (15 day) foliar application was applied. The results indicate that at short-term, Zn may induce a rapid hydraulic signal from the sprayed leaves to the roots, leading to changes in root hydraulic conductance but without effects on the whole-leaf gas exchange parameters. Root accumulation of Zn may prevent leaf damage. The role of different root and leaf aquaporin isoforms in the mediation of this signal is discussed, since significant variations in PIP1 and PIP2 gene expression were observed. In the second experiment, low Zn concentration had a beneficial effect on plant growth and specific aquaporin isoforms were differentially regulated at the transcriptional level in the roots. By contrast, the high Zn concentration had a detrimental effect on growth, with reductions in the root hydraulic conductance, leaf photosynthesis rate and Ca2+ uptake in the roots. The abundance of the PIP1 isoforms was significantly increased during this response. Therefore, a 25 µM Zn dose resulted in a positive effect in pak choi growth through an increased root hydraulic conductance.

The use of reclaimed water (RW) is considered as a means of maintaining agricultural productivity under drought conditions. However, RW may contain high concentrations of salts. The use of some practices, such as biofertilizers and organic substrates, is also becoming increasingly important in agricultural. production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of a mixed substrate (with coconut fibre) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on water relations, nutrient uptake and productivity in tomato plants irrigated with saline RW in a commercial greenhouse. Saline RW on its own caused a nutrient imbalance and negatively affected several physiological parameters. However, the high water-holding capacity of coconut fibre in the mixed substrate increased water and nutrient availability for the plants. As a consequence, leaf water potential, gas exchange, some fluorescence parameters (PhiPSII, Fv’/Fm’, qP and ETR) and fruit size and weight improved, even in control irrigation conditions. The use of AMF improved only some parameters because of the low percentage of colonization, suggesting that AMF effectiveness in commercial field conditions is slower and dependent of several factors.

BACKGROUND Non-conventional water sources and water-saving techniques can be valuable in semi-arid regions, although their long-term effects on citrus quality are little known. This study evaluated the effects of irrigation with two sources, transfer water (TW) and reclaimed water (RW), combined with two irrigation strategies, full irrigation (FI) and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI), on fruit quality of mandarins and grapefruits during eight growth seasons, RESULTS Reclaimed water irrigation in mandarin, without water restriction, influenced maturity index (MI) less than TW-FI, because titratable acidity (TA) increased to a greater degree than soluble solid contents (SSC). Nevertheless, juice quality standards were satisfied. Regardless of the irrigation treatment (FI or RDI), a trend towards increasing fruit weight was also detected with RW. In grapefruit, its rootstock (Citrus macrophylla) enhanced salinity resilience with respect to the rootstock of mandarin (‘Carrizo’ citrange) and, hence, MI was not affected by RW. The RDI strategy, without saline stress (TW-RDI), increased, to a similar degree, both SSC and TA in mandarin fruit, not affecting the MI. In grapefruit, the water stress of RDI did improve the MI due to the TA did not change and SSC increased significantly, the TA did not change. The combination of both strategies, RW-RDI, decreased the MI only in some years because TA increased proportionally more than SSC in mandarin, CONCLUSIONS The medium- and long-term feasibility of using RW and RDI to irrigate citrus was demonstrated. However, they must be performed cautiously and with appropriate management to avoid damaging fruit quality as a result of phytotoxic elements. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

This paper deals with the assessment of heterogeneity in water status in a commercial orchard, as a prerequisite for precision irrigation management. Remote sensing-derived indicators could be suitable for mapping water stress over large areas, and recent studies have demonstrated that high resolution airborne thermal imagery enables the assessment of discontinuous canopies as pure tree crowns can be targeted, thus eliminating the background effects. Airborne campaigns were conducted over a drip-irrigated commercial orchard in Southwestern Spain composed of five different orchard tree crops. An unmanned aerial vehicle with a thermal camera onboard was flown three times during the day on 8 July 2010, at 9, 11 and 13 h (local time). Stem water potential was measured at the same time of the flights. In some irrigation units, irrigation was stopped prior to the measurement date to induce water deficits for comparative purposes. Several approaches for using the thermal data were proposed. Daily evolution of the differential between canopy and air temperature (T c - T a) was compared to tree water status. The slope of the evolution of T c - T a with time was well correlated with water status and is proposed as a novel indicator linked with the stomatal behavior. The Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) was calculated with the temperature data from the 13.00 h flight using an empirical approach for defining the upper and lower limits of T c - T a. The assessment of variability in water status was also performed using differences in relative canopy temperatures. Ample variability was detected among and within irrigation units, demonstrating that the approach proposed was viable for precision irrigation management. The assessment led to the identification of water-stressed areas, and to the definition of threshold CWSI values and associated risks. Such thresholds may be used by growers for irrigation management based on crop developmental stages and economic considerations. © 2013

The effect of different irrigation strategies on the fruit quality at harvest and during storage at 1 °C of 'Búlida' apricots (Prunus armeniaca L.) was studied. Irrigation treatments consisted of a control irrigated at 100% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) throughout the season, and two deficit irrigation treatments consisting of continuous irrigation at 50% of control, and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) at 100% of ETc during the critical periods (second rapid fruit growth and early post-harvest) and at 25% during the rest of the season. Fruits at harvest from both deficit irrigation treatments showed higher values of total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity and hue angle (h°) than control fruits, whereas their diameter, fresh weight, firmness and maturity index values were similar to those in the control. During the first 10 days of the 30-day chilling storage period, higher TSS and h° values were found in deficit irrigated fruits, whilst the other parameters were similar for all treatments. Weight loss and fungal attacks (mainly Rhizopus sp. and Monilinia sp.) during a subsequent retail sale period of 4 days at 13 °C were the lowest in RDI. Deficit irrigation was demonstrated to be commercially advantageous for keeping fruit quality, saving considerable amounts of water

The knowledge of crop response to irrigation is essential in order to manage water resources, especially in areas where water supply is limited, as in the region of Murcia. Under these conditions, better uniformity of water application, by using improved systems such as drip irrigation, together with an irrigation scheduling coupled with the plant physiology, can help to optimise water use. Also, a good knowledge of the critical periods in which water stress can considerably reduce yield and/or fruit quality is required. For that, it is important to define precisely the phenological plant processes. This experiment was conducted in a mature apricot tree orchard (Prunus armeniaca L. ‘Búlida’, on Real Fino apricot rootstock), with trees spaced at 8 x 8 m and grown under drip-irrigation conditions, in a loamy-textured soil with a Mediterranean climate. Irrigation scheduling was based on crop coefficients and reference crop evapotranspiration, as determined from data of a class A evaporation pan. The predominant dates of fruit stages are described, according to the BBCH General Scale, using a scale in days from full bloom, as the number of accumulated growing degree hours (GDH). The annual pattern of vegetative and fruit growth is described. A clear distinction could be made between the main periods of shoot and fruit growth in apricot trees, which may be considered an advantageous characteristic for the application of deficit irrigation. The study will improve apricot culture by expressing the timing of most agricultural operations on a standardised scale.
