14. Effect of cereal rye cover crop termination timings on weed control and corn yield under a two-pass herbicide program.

Abstract

Cover crops, including cereal rye, are generally known to suppress weeds in various cropping systems; however, research on their effective use is lacking. This study investigated the effects of different cereal rye termination timings on weed control and corn performance in a two-pass herbicide program across 5 site-years (2021–2023) in Arkansas, USA. The herbicide program consisted of one application at cereal rye (Secale cereale) termination (cereal rye environment) or at corn (Zea mays) planting (conventional system) and another at the V4 corn stage. Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) at V4 corn was better controlled in cereal rye environments regardless of its termination timing (>75%) than in the conventional corn system (<50%), and the control was generally excellent in both systems 4 weeks later, with subtly greater control in the cereal rye environments. In contrast, yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) control, in general, was slightly less in the cereal rye environments than in the conventional system. Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus–galli) and broadleaf signalgrass (Urochloa platyphylla) control was similar to that of Palmer amaranth, especially at the V4 corn stage, with clear benefits in its control with the later termination timings. Corn height was greater (by 8% to 10%) in cereal rye environments terminated at 1 or 2 weeks after corn planting compared to the conventional system or other cereal rye environments. Corn yield was similar between the conventional system and the cereal rye environments terminated before corn planting; however, the yield was 16% to 22% less with those terminated at or after corn planting. These findings indicate the constrained use of cereal rye in corn, with its termination time optimized for 2 weeks before corn planting. Further research could identify factors that mitigate the yield loss from delayed cereal rye termination and improve its use as a cover crop in corn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Evaluation of residual palmer amaranth control with herbicides coated on fertilizer.

Abstract

Herbicide-coated fertilizers have the potential to provide lasting control of problematic weeds while simultaneously reducing the risk of injury to cotton, thus reducing yield penalties. Therefore, research was conducted in Fayetteville and Marianna, AR, to evaluate which herbicides coated on fertilizer provide lasting control of Palmer amaranth without increased risk of cotton injury. Eight herbicides were coated onto a blend of 196 kg ha-1 of urea and 112 kg ha-1 of muriate of potash and applied at the 6- to 8-leaf growth stage over the top of cotton. In Marianna, florpyrauxifen-benzyl provided the lowest control, which was 73% averaged over 14 and 28 d after treatment (DAT). The level of control provided by florpyrauxifen-benzyl did not differ from the other treatments in Fayetteville. While some herbicide treatments did have decreased control by 28 DAT, they were still effective, providing no less than 93% control. Palmer amaranth density differed among herbicides only in Marianna, where florpyrauxifen-benzyl-treated plots had a higher weed density. None of the herbicide treatments in either of the experiments caused any adverse effects on the crop as measured by visual injury, seedcotton yield, and crop groundcover. Most of the coated fertilizer treatments provided high levels of Palmer amaranth control and demonstrated the weed management potential of this herbicide application method. These results highlight the potential of implementing herbicides that are not labeled for over-the-top postemergence applications in cotton as coated fertilizers, as this method reduces the risk of injury and yield penalties. 42. Rice response to fluridone following topsoil removal on a precision‐leveled field.

Abstract

Furrow‐irrigated rice (Oryza sativa L.) production requires additional management options without the cultural strategy of a flood. In 2023, fluridone (Brake) was registered for use in rice production. Precision‐leveling land is an important aspect of maintaining an effective irrigation flow path; however, the removal of topsoil can severely impact crop response from residual herbicides. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of fluridone on rice response when applied to a precision‐leveled field following topsoil removal. An on‐farm field study was conducted in 2023 near Osceola, AR, with a Sharkey‐Steele clay complex soil texture. The study consisted of six herbicide treatments applied at the rice three‐leaf stage. These treatments included clomazone, quinclorac, and fluridone at three rates (0.5×, 1×, and 2× of a label rate) and a nontreated control. Across evaluation times, maximum visual rice injury was greater than 25% and 65% for the fluridone 1× and 2× treatments, respectively. Rice canopy coverage was reduced in the fluridone 1× and 2× treatments compared to all other treatments from 6 to 10 weeks after application (WAA). Rice heading in the fluridone 2x treatment was delayed by more than 60 and 30 percentage points at 11 and 12 WAA, respectively, compared to all other treatments. Rough rice yield in the fluridone 2× treatment was reduced by 21% compared to all other treatments. Overall, fluridone 1× and 2× rates caused substantial rice injury and would not be recommended on a precision‐leveled field.
