Abstract

Distant Lights: Trio for Flute, Cello, & Piano seeks to depict a near-future apocalyptic event that threatens humanity's survival on Earth. Stories of science fiction, specifically those in film, inspire my approach to creating new musical works with narrative elements. Films like Interstellar and, separately, various Pixar movies, as they appear on a larger timeline known as the “Pixar Theory,” are directly comparable to Distant Lights in terms of storytelling as they share similar elements which I will discuss throughout chapter two. I draw inspiration from Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time), George Crumb’s Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale), Ian Clarke’s The Great Train Race, and Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 6. As Messiaen provides models for creating a large-form work written for a relatively small number of players and a model for writing for the piano, Crumb’s Vox Balaenae provides a structural model for the music of the first movement and additional guidance in writing for the specific instruments used in Distant Lights. Bartók’s 6th String Quartet and Ian Clarke’s The Great Train Race offer approaches to writing for the cello and flute respectively. The performance of the work is enhanced by visual details, inspired by the use of lights and shadows in George Crumb’s Vox Balaenae. Images drawn from the James Webb Space Telescope add deeper layers of reality to the musical narration. Visual aspects of the work draw focus to both the story and the performers, providing a more immersive experience. The resulting work seeks to musically depict a story the encompasses warning signs, chaos, anxiety, a departure from Earth, desperation, and hope for the future. In future endeavors, I plan to explore similar science fiction ideas that have their origins in potential real-world events. 8. Elementary Children's Tonal Awareness as Related to Perception of Tonal Dissonance

Abstract

This study investigated children's tonal awareness by measuring their abilities to detect dissonance in major tonality using the author-created "Tonal Dissonance Detection Test." A two-way analysis of variance of 312 elementary school subjects' Tonal Dissonance Detection Test scores revealed that first- and second-graders' dissonance detection abilities were significantly weaker than those of their third- to sixth-grade counterparts. Subsequent analysis revealed neither a significant gender effect nor interaction between grade level and gender. Findings are consistent with related study of the perception of tonality and tonal expectancies in children and adults. Given the homogeneity of the sample, the longevity of the music instructor, the school's sequential Kodaly-based curriculum, and conclusions of prior research, discussion considered the impact of musical instruction and musical development on the ability to perceive tonality. The author suggested the two aforementioned constructs might be studied by comparing the same perceptual skills of children from both Western and non-Western cultures. Abstract

A randomized phase 3 trial results of the treatment of squamous-cell carcinoma of head and neck is presented. Patients receiving docetaxel plus cisplatin and fluorouracil induction chemotherapy plus chemoradiotherapy showed longer survival than those receiving cisplatin and fluorouracil induction chemotherapy plus chemoradiotherapy.

Abstract

A 65-year-old man was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Patients with multiple myeloma have multiple tumors derived from bone marrow tissue. He had experienced painless double vision 18 months and nine months before admission, but both times regained normal vision without treatment. One month before admission he had experienced pain on the right side of his face, and double vision. A computed tomographic (CT) scan and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of his head showed a mass on the right side of his skull. A biopsy of a lesion inside his right nostril revealed a small plasmacytoma, or mass of cancer cells in bone. The patient was treated with radiation therapy and melphalan and prednisone.

Abstract

Tinnitus is an often extremely unpleasant buzzing or ringing in the ears. The use of amino-oxyacetic acid (AOAA) as a drug for the reduction of tinnitus was explored. AOAA was tried as an anticonvulsant in the 1960, and it was also found to produce a short-lived reduction of hearing level in laboratory animals. These results suggested that the drug may have value in the treatment of tinnitus. In the current study, 66 patients with tinnitus were given either a regimen of AOAA treatment or a noneffective placebo. The value of the drug was determined by both objective and subjective measurements, with greatest importance being placed on the patient's own report. Approximately 20 percent of the patients found that their level of tinnitus was reduced. Some patients, however, reported an increased level of tinnitus with the use of AOAA. Use of the drug was associated with a high percentage (71 percent) of side effects. Because of the relatively poor response and large number of side effects, AOAA should not be used for the treatment of tinnitus. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
