House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) are ubiquitous wild birds and can be potential reservoirs of avian haemosporidians (vector-borne blood parasites) in their habitat. The Zagros Mountain range in western Iran is an important habitat of many endangered birds. To investigate the occurrence and molecular characterization of Haemoproteus and Plasmodium spp. in Kuhdasht County in the central western region of Zagros, blood samples from 60 House Sparrows were screened by microscopic examination and PCR. An overall prevalence of 6.6%, with a varied intensity of infection (1-198 parasites per 15,000 erythrocytes) for Haemoproteus spp. and no infection for Plasmodium spp., was observed by microscopy. One of the studied cytochrome b sequences was identical to the lineage PAHIS1, and the other sequence was a new lineage, PADOM41; both were extremely similar to Haemoproteus passeris. Haemosporidian parasites are responsible for anemia, acute tissue degeneration, and depopulation in wild birds. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of haemosporidians and also morphologic and molecular evaluation of tissue stages of Haemoproteus sp. in common buzzards ( Buteo buteo ). Eleven free-living common buzzards were referred to the Avian Clinic of Veterinary School of Lorestan University with lethargy, weight loss, and ataxia. Gametocytes of Leucocytozoon buteonis were found in blood smears of six (54.5 %) birds, while one had simultaneous infection with blood stages of Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon. During histopathological examinations, exo-erythrocytic stages of the genus Haemoproteus were seen in the lung and kidney of a dead bird. This study is the first report of exo-erythrocytic infection of Haemoproteus in common buzzards. Molecular assays confirmed the infection of Haemoproteus sp. (lineage BUTBUT15) in tissue samples. Phylogenetic analysis using cytochrome b gene suggested that BUTBUT15 was more closely related to the lineages isolated from the family Falconidae in contrast to the Accipitridae., (© 2021 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of Australian Society for Parasitology.)

Background and Objectives: B2 and D have been mentioned as the most common phylogenetic groups among uropathogenic Escherichia coli. However, there is still controversy about the importance of these phylo-groups. This study was conducted to investigate the probable relation between these groups and antibiotic resistance patterns of E. coli isolates derived from urine and feces of the patients with acute or recurrent UTI., Materials and Methods: 10 isolates were recovered from urine and feces samples of patients with different phases of UTI in whom E. coli was causative pathogen. Biochemical fingerprinting was performed to classify the isolates and select their appropriate representatives. Phylogenetic grouping was performed using multiplex PCR, and antibiotic resistance was determined by disk diffusion method., Results: Five-hundred-sixty E. coli isolates were derived from 56 UTI patients (27 acute, 29 recurrent). Among them, 261 isolates were selected using biochemical fingerprinting. All the isolates were sensitive to imipenem and nitrofurantoin. Compared to other phylo-groups, the isolates in group D showed considerably different frequencies in acute vs. recurrent phase of UTI, in urine vs. stool samples, in males vs. females, and in- vs. out-patients. They were more resistant to the antibiotics (except norfloxacin), and in contrast to others, this was seen more in acute UTI, especially in urine samples. Multi-drug resistance pattern was also meaningfully higher in group D., Conclusion: Although phylo-groups B2 and D of E. coli bacteria are more responsible for UTI, group D isolates seem to be more resistant and probably more virulent, even than the ones from group B2., (Copyright© 2019 Iranian Neuroscience Society.)

A balanced anesthesia protocol is called perfect when it has fast induction, excellent recovery, the least effect on the cardiopulmonary system and sufficient analgesia. Many of anesthetic combinations have an analgesic effect without opioids. However, at the end of anesthesia, analgesia decreases or is incomplete . The purpose of this study was to evaluate anesthesia times, electrocardiogram (ECG) and analgesic effect of tramadol when administrated with ketamine, ketamine-diazepam, ketamine-midazolam, and ketamine-xylazine and selected a balanced anesthesia protocol in buzzards. Ten adult common buzzards ( Buteo buteo ) received seven different anesthetic protocols (with or without tramadol). In each protocol, anesthesia times, electrocardiograph parameters and analgesic effect were recorded. Excluding ketamine-tramadol, all protocols produced deep anesthesia in all buzzards. Among of all protocols, no significant differences regarding the amplitude and duration of waves (P, QRS and T) was found. By adding tramadol to anesthetic protocols, response duration to thermal sense increased up 3 hr after recovery. Tramadol did not make considerable effects on anesthesia times and ECG and made analgesic effect up to 3 hr when used with ketamine-benzodiazpins or ketamine-xylazine. Therefore, tramadol can be used with injectable anesthetics to make suitably balanced anesthesia in buzzards., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) causes chronic non-fatal diseases in the poultry industry with a remarkable decrease in feed consumption, egg production and other production indices. To study the genetic characteristics of MG isolates in commercial and backyard poultry flocks, 21 positive samples from different regions of Iran were analysed in the period 2012-2017. Typical macroscopic and histopathological lesions of the upper respiratory tract and lungs were found, similar to those reported by other researchers. A 298-361 bp part of the mgc2 gene was sequenced and analysed. Based on the phylogenetic analysis, the Iranian MG isolates fell into four distinct subgroups. The nucleotide difference between subgroups 1 and 4 was remarkable (91.6-94.9%). A 22-amino-acid insertion was present in two of the studied MG isolates, not observed in other vaccine and standard MG strains. The Iranian Veterinary Organisation (IVO) should consider the observed diversity of prevalent MG isolates from both commercial and backyard flocks in designing the strategy for controlling MG. More studies are needed to understand modifications in MG antigenicity and pathogenicity because of the observed genetic variations.

Background: Hepatitis C is an infectious disease caused by blood-borne pathogen, hepatitis C virus (HCV)., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of HCV infection and associated risk factors among addicts in drug treatment centers in Lorestan Province, Iran., Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional sero-behavioral survey was given to drug addicts in the drug treatment centers of Khorramabad, Lorestan Province, Iran during June 2012 - March 2013. Drug addicts were interviewed using a standard questionnaire including demographic, imprisonment history, and HCV-related risk behavior items. Thereafter, the sera drawn from the participants were tested for anti-HCV antibody (Ab), anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Ab, and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)., Results: The mean age of the cohorts was 31.7. Up to 60.2% of drug users had educational levels less than high school, 67.5% were self-employed, and 32.5% were office workers. The mean duration of drug injection was 6.8 years. Statistical analyses indicated that the prevalence of HCV among drug addicts was positively associated with age, past incarceration, drug injection history, the duration of drug use, and tattooing. In addition, 16.23% of volunteers were HCV-positive. Of those infected with HCV, 1.10% was co-infected with HBV, 2.95% were positive for HIV, and 0.36% of HCV-positive cases were infected with all three viruses., Conclusions: The high prevalence of HCV infection among this group implies a high rate of transmission and exposure to the risk of serious diseases. It is important that the high prevalence of HCV infection be taken into consideration to control further transmission of this infection.

Backgrounds and Objectives: Classified as low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses, the H9N2 subtype causes severe respiratory disease in poultry farms and occasional respiratory disease in humans. In this study, the neuraminidase (NA) gene of three Avian Influenza (AI) H9N2 strains isolated from poultry farms in Iran during 2010-11, as well as other reported Iranian H9N2 isolates, were genetically analyzed and their nucleotide changes were evaluated., Materials and Methods: The NA gene of three AIVs were sequenced and evaluated for genetic characteristics and phylogenetic relationship., Results: One new potential glycosylation site (PGS) at amino acid position 306 was observed in one of the studied isolates (A/Chicken/Iran/N102/2011). Antigenic sites of NA in Iranian H9N2 isolates have varied in a yearly manner. The Iranian isolates can be divided into 2 main subgroups; 11-T like subgroup viruses isolated mainly during 1998-2004 and second subgroup viruses isolated during 2004-2009. Interestingly, the three studied isolates fell into a third subgroup. The nucleotide sequences of the three studied isolates showed high identity to recent Pakistani H9N2 isolates (94.5-97%) compared to former Iranian AIV isolates (89-94%)., Conclusion: High frequency of substitutions in the NA gene of studied isolates in recent years and effects of those substitutions on the pathogenicity of AI virus highlight the need to continue surveillance of genetic characteristics of AIV H9N2 in Iran.
