10. Keeping the Lights on and the Wolves Outside: College Student Media Advisers in Communities of Practice

Abstract

This research advances communities of practice (CoPs) theory by documenting a role distinct to CoPs within student newsrooms. Using a survey (N = 127) of college student media advisers, the data support a liminal role in which advisers are simultaneously inside and outside the CoP. This study also develops and verifies scales for each of the four pillars of a CoP in student newsrooms, that is, practice, community, identity, and meaning. Furthermore, these findings explore the impact of newsroom structure on the formation of CoPs and the differences among advisers regarding time spent in mentorship and assessment.

19. A Descriptive Study of Eight School Improvement Councils in South Carolina.

Abstract

Findings of a study that examined eight South Carolina school-improvement councils (SICs) that were identified as effective are presented in this report. The sample included SICs from two high schools, two middle schools, and four elementary schools that had indicated in a previous survey that they had basic organizational structures, effective functioning, and a positive impact on the school. The study offers a descriptive analysis of SIC organization, functioning, activities, and accomplishments. Methodology included onsite observation; document analysis; and interviews with the principals, the SIC chairperson, the school's teacher of the year, and two or more council members. Findings indicate much diversity exists among the SICs in regard to organizational structure, council functioning, and school or district-level support. Problems faced by the councils include inadequate information, low parental involvement, lack of time and resources, and inadequate member training in effective problem solving. Finally, the capacity of SICs to work effectively on school improvement appears to be related to their developmental maturity. Ten tables and a copy of the consent form are included. (LMI)

Abstract

In a mixed methods survey (N = 323), college journalists shared their experiences of working in remote student newsrooms during the COVID-19 campus disruptions. Through the theoretical lens of Communities of Practice, findings revealed students experienced robust, but different learning in disrupted newsrooms. While students reported that their ability to cultivate and learn with a community suffered, they still reported the formation of their identities as journalists and the development of meaning. Analysis demonstrated that the survey items created statistically reliable scales for each of the four pillars and overall CoP scale. This advances the Communities of Practice theoretical framework to help describe the nature of student newsroom learning in a disrupted environment. Consistent with existing literature, this work points toward the special nature of student-run newsrooms as high-impact learning environments, however, the isolation that came as a natural outgrowth of the lack of community contributed to students’ struggles with mental health. These findings also underscore additional practical implications of young journalists learning and refining their craft in isolated spaces. Reporting remotely required heightened self-sufficiency and resiliency, but also amplified feelings of burnout, low morale, and mental exhaustion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Secondary School Organizational Climate and Professional Growth and Development Attitudes: Implications for School Improvement.

Abstract

Besides setting the tone for accomplishing student learning goals and effecting improvement, school climate serves as a determinant of teacher attitudes toward personal and professional growth and development. Bureaucratization of schools decreases teacher effectiveness through rules, controls, and reduced autonomy and authority. The formal organization gives its members clues about renewal potential, performance expectations, and other procedures hindering or stimulating professional growth. This study examined whether a relationship existed between high school teachers' perceptions of their school organizational climate and their attitudes regarding professional growth and development. The study used the School Climate Profile and the Professional Development Attitude Scale. Researchers randomly selected 20 percent of the subject teachers at 15 high schools to receive the instruments. The response rate was 62 percent. Correlation between the two variables of school climate and professional growth and development was high. Study results include teachers' priorities of (1) conditions producing a positive climate; and (2) influences considered most important to their professional growth and development attitudes. Teachers indicated that the most important influence on their positive school climate perceptions were procedures facilitating the school's ability to solve its problems and make improvements based on known goals. Structures inviting teacher participation in decision-making and creating effective communication was next in importance. These conditions are consistent with school structuring recommendations. Abstract

This study investigated secondary teachers' perceptions of school organizational climate relative to their own professional growth and development attitudes. Instrumentation consisted of the "School Climate Profile," chosen for its range of determinants of school organizational climate in the secondary school, and a Likert scaling procedure to measure teachers' attitudes about their professional growth and development. The response rate of 62 percent represented a randomly selected sample of 89 out of 151 teachers. Gamma coefficients were computed for each variable, which was then ranked. conclusions drawn from the analysis indicated that teachers' perceptions of positive school climate related to the schools' ability to solve its problems and make improvements based on known goals. Structures that invited teacher participation in the decision-making process and created effective communication among students, parents, administrators, and school were next in importance. These conditions, as perceived by teachers, contributed to their perceptions of the school's organizational climate as related to their own perceptions for potential professional growth and development. Tujuan dilakukannya penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana prinsip-prinsip hukum Status Kawasan Hutan berdasarkan ketentuan hukum perundang-undangan yang berlaku dan bagaimana pengaturan kedudukan hukum Status Kawasan Hutan setelah Putusan Mahkamah Konstitusi. Denagn menggunakan metode penelitian yuridis normatif, maka dapat disimpulkan: 1. Hak-hak masyarakat hukum adat terhadap wilayah hutan sering menjadi korban dan dikorbankan untuk kepentingan investasi para pemilik modal, sehingga perjuangan masyarakat hukum adat untuk memperoleh kembali hak-hak mereka atas hutan telah mendapat respons yang positif berdasarkan konstitusi. Secara hukum, kepemilikan masyarakat hukum adat atas hutan memiliki hubungan historik yang cukup panjang sebelum Indonesia Merdeka dan kepemilikan mereka atas hutan diperoleh secara alamiah dan kodrati serta kepemilikan masyarakat hukum adat atas hutan diakui dan diterima berdasarkan hukum internasional masyarakat hukum adat mempunyai kedaulatan permanen terhadap sumberdaya alam. 2. Keputusan Mahkamah Konstitusi (MK 45 dan MK 35) telah menegaskan bahwa Pemerintah Daerah memiliki kerwenangan hukum untuk menetapkan suatu kawasan hutan diwilayahnya masing-masing. Hutan Adat tidak lagi menjadi bagian dari Hutan Negara serta dalam penguasaan hutan oleh negara tetap memperhatikan hak masyarakat hukum adat. Dengan dasar itu, maka Pemerintah melakukan inventarisasi Perda-perda yang terkait dengan Masyarakat Hukum Adat, serta mempercepat penyelesaian RUU tentang Pengakuan dan Perlindungan Masyarakat Hukum Adat (inisiatif DPR) yang dalam hal ini Kementerian Kehutanan telah ditunjuk sebagai koordinator penyiapan RUU dimaksud. Faith-based organizations often provide resources to low-income populations. In the religion literature, this is seen as a key element of the social capital of religion for these populations. However, this qualitative study finds a different element in how low-income people experience social capital. In focus groups, this study finds a surprising number of references to God and spirituality, but not faith-based organizations, among a sample of low-income people, many experiencing homelessness, when talking about resources available through their social networks. This study finds a population so estranged from resources they can trust that they substitute God as they understand Him as their only source of social capital. These participants described communication with God as a way to access resources through kind strangers who may decide to be generous with them as a result of God's intervention. 40. Social Capital of Last Resort: The Role of Religion, Family, and Trust among People with Low Socio-Economic Status

Abstract

This qualitative study finds evidence that poverty and homelessness undermine primary social relationships for many low-income people, eroding social capital, and that generalized trust may not be a good proxy for social capital, at least among a largely homeless population. This study also finds a surprising number of references to God, religion and spirituality among largely homeless populations when talking about their social networks, which addresses literature suggesting that church affiliation and religion may be unique in the formation of social capital. Twelve focus groups were conducted with a total 46 participants self-identified as low-income to explore social capital. A simplified model of the network- and resource-based theories of social capital was used to ask low-income participants who they would place in their social circles and what types of resources, demands and expectations arise out of the people in each of the circles. The study also used survey-type questions about generalized trust to generate discussion about levels of trust among participants and reasons for those levels of trust, as well as asking about current and past membership in various associations to address civic engagement. There was no evidence of a relationship between available resources through social networks and their reported trust levels.
