The Planck mission provided all-sky dust emission maps in the submm to mm range at an angular resolution of 5'. In addition, some specific sources can be observed at long wavelengths and higher resolution using ground-based telescopes. These observations are limited to small scales and require extensive data processing before they become available for scientific analysis. They also suffer from extended emission filtering. At present, we are still unable to fully understand the emissivity variations observed in different astrophysical environments at long wavelengths. It is therefore challenging to estimate any dust emission in the submm-mm at a better resolution than the 5' from Planck. In this analysis, based on supervised deep learning algorithms, we produced dust emission predictions in the two Planck bands centered at 850 mic and 1.38 mm, at the Herschel resolution (37''). Herschel data of Galactic environments, ranging from 160 to 500 mic and smoothed to 5', were used to train the neural network. Then, using Herschel data only, the model was applied to predict dust emission maps at 37''. The neural network is capable of reproducing dust emission maps of various Galactic environments. Remarkably, it also performs well for nearby extragalactic environments. This could indicate that large dust grains have similar properties in both our Galaxy and nearby galaxies, or at least that their spectral behaviors are comparable in Galactic and extragalactic environments. We provide dust emission prediction maps at 850 mic and 1.38 mm at the 37'' of several surveys: Hi-GAL, Gould Belt, Cold Cores, HERITAGE, Helga, HerM33es, KINGFISH, and VNGS. The ratio of these two wavelength brightness bands reveals a derived emissivity spectral index statistically close to 1 for all the surveys, which favors the hypothesis of a flattened dust emission spectrum for wavelengths larger than 850 mic., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (18 pages)

We describe the spectrophotometric calibration of the Mid-Infrared Instrument's (MIRI) Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This calibration is complicated by a time-dependent evolution in the effective throughput of the MRS; this evolution is strongest at long wavelengths, approximately a factor of 2 at 25um over the first two years of the mission. We model and correct for this evolution through regular observations of internal calibration lamps. Pixel flatfields are constructed from observations of the infrared-bright planetary nebula NGC 7027, and photometric aperture corrections from a combination of theoretical models and observations of bright standard stars. We tie the 5--18um flux calibration to high signal/noise (S/N; ~ 600-1000) observations of the O9 V star 10 Lacertae, scaled to the average calibration factor of nine other spectrophotometric standards. We calibrate the 18--28um spectral range using a combination of observations of main belt asteroid 515 Athalia and the circumstellar disk around young stellar object SAO 206462. The photometric repeatability is stable to better than 1% in the wavelength range 5--18um, and the S/N ratio of the delivered spectra is consistent between bootstrapped measurements, pipeline estimates, and theoretical predictions. The MRS point-source calibration agrees with that of the MIRI imager to within 1% from 7 to 21um and is approximately 1% fainter than prior Spitzer observations, while the extended source calibration agrees well with prior Cassini/CIRS and Voyager/IRIS observations., Comment: 29 pages, 32 figures. The absolute flux calibration of the Mid-Infrared Instrument Imaging and Coronagraphy is based on observations of multiple stars taken during the first 2.5 years of JWST operations. The observations were designed to ensure that the flux calibration is valid for a range of flux densities, different subarrays, and different types of stars. The flux calibration was measured by combining observed aperture photometry corrected to infinite aperture with predictions based on previous observations and models of stellar atmospheres. A subset of these observations were combined with model point-spread-functions to measure the corrections to infinite aperture. Variations in the calibration factor with time, flux density, background level, type of star, subarray, integration time, rate, and well depth were investigated, and the only significant variations were with time and subarray. Observations of the same star taken approximately every month revealed a modest time-dependent response loss seen mainly at the longest wavelengths. This loss is well characterized by a decaying exponential with a time constant of ~200 days. After correcting for the response loss, the band-dependent scatter around the corrected average (aka repeatability) was found to range from 0.1 to 1.2%. Signals in observations taken with different subarrays can be lower by up to 3.4% compared to FULL frame. After correcting for the time and subarray dependencies, the scatter in the calibration factors measured for individual stars ranges from 1 to 4% depending on the band. The formal uncertainties on the flux calibration averaged for all observations are 0.3 to 1.0%, with longer-wavelength bands generally having larger uncertainties., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, submitted to AJ

The JWST has captured the sharpest IR images ever taken of the Horsehead nebula, a prototypical moderately irradiated PDR that is fully representative of most of the UV-illuminated molecular gas in the Milky Way and star-forming galaxies. We investigate the impact of FUV radiation of a molecular cloud and constrain the structure of the edge of the PDR and its illumination conditions. We used NIRCam and MIRI to obtain 17 broadband and 6 narrowband maps from 0.7 to 28 $\mu$m. We mapped the dust emission, scattered light, and several gas phase lines. We also used HST-WFC3 maps at 1.1 and 1. 6 $\mu$m, along with HST-STIS spectroscopic observations of the H$\alpha$ line. We probed the structure of the edge of the Horsehead and resolved its spatial complexity. We detected a network of faint striated features extending perpendicularly to the PDR front into the H\,II region in filters sensitive to nano-grain emission and light scattered by larger grains. This may indeed figure as the first detection of the entrainment of dust particles in the evaporative flow. The map of the 1-0 S(1) line of H$_2$ presents sharp sub-structures on scales as small as 1.5 arcsec. The ionization and dissociation fronts appear at distances 1-2 arcsec behind the edge of the PDR and seem to spatially coincide, indicating a thickness of the neutral atomic layer below 100 au. All broadband maps present strong color variations which can be explained by dust attenuation. Deviations of the emissions in the H$\alpha$, Pa$\alpha,$ and Br$\alpha$ lines also indicate dust attenuation. With a very simple model, we derive the main features of the extinction curve. A small excess of extinction at 3 $\mu$m may be attributed to icy H$_2$O mantles onto grains. In all lines of sight crossing the inner regions of the Horsehead, it appears that dust attenuation is non-negligible over the entire spectral range., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures

The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) provides the observatory with a huge advance in mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy covering the wavelength range of 5 to 28 microns. This paper describes the performance and characteristics of the MIRI imager as understood during observatory commissioning activities, and through its first year of science operations. We discuss the measurements and results of the imager's point spread function, flux calibration, background, distortion and flat fields as well as results pertaining to best observing practices for MIRI imaging, and discuss known imaging artefacts that may be seen during or after data processing. Overall, we show that the MIRI imager has met or exceeded all its pre-flight requirements, and we expect it to make a significant contribution to mid-infrared science for the astronomy community for years to come.

Astrometry is one of the main pillars of astronomy, and one of its oldest branches. Over the years, an increasing number of astrometric works by means of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data have revolutionized our understanding of various phenomena. With the launch of JWST, it becomes almost instinctive to want to replicate or improve these results with data taken with the newest, state-of-the-art, space-based telescope. In this regard, the initial focus of the community has been on the Near-Infrared (NIR) detectors on board of JWST because of their high spatial resolution. This paper begins the effort to capture and apply what has been learned from HST to the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) of JWST by developing the tools to obtain high-precision astrometry and photometry with its imager. We describe in detail how to create accurate effective point-spread-function (ePSF) models and geometric-distortion corrections, analyze their temporal stability, and test their quality to the extent of what is currently possible with the available data in the JWST MAST archive. We show that careful data reduction provides deep insight on the performance and intricacies of the MIRI imager, and of JWST in general. In an effort to help the community to devise new observing programs, we make our ePSF models and geometric-distortion corrections publicly available., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 1 table. The detectors in the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) are arsenic-21 doped silicon impurity band conduction (Si:As IBC) devices and are direct descendants of the Spitzer IRAC22 long wavelength arrays (channels 3 and 4). With appropriate data processing, they can provide excellent per-23 formance. In this paper we discuss the various non-ideal behaviors of these detectors that need to be addressed24 to realize their potential. We have developed a set of algorithms toward this goal, building on experience with25 previous similar detector arrays. The MIRI-specific stage 1 pipeline algorithms, of a three stage JWST cali-26 bration pipeline, were developed using pre-flight tests on the flight detectors and flight spares and have been27 refined using flight data. This paper describes these algorithms, which are included in the first stage of the28 JWST Calibration Pipeline for the MIRI instrument.

A wide-field near-infrared survey of the Galactic disk and bulge/bar(s) is supported by a large representation of the community of Galactic astronomers. The combination of sensitivity, angular resolution and large field of view make Roman uniquely able to study the crowded and highly extincted lines of sight in the Galactic plane. A ~1000 deg2 survey of the bulge and inner Galactic disk would yield an impressive dataset of ~120 billion sources and map the structure of our Galaxy. The effort would foster subsequent expansions in numerous dimensions (spatial, depth, wavelengths, epochs). In this paper we aim to constrain for the first time the dust emission in the mid-to-far infrared domain, in the LMC, with the use of the Spitzer IRS and MIPS SED data, combined with Herschel data. We also consider UV extinction predictions derived from modeling. We selected 10 regions observed as part of the SAGE-Spec program, to probe dust properties in various environments (diffuse, molecular and ionized regions). All data were smoothed to the 40arcsec angular resolution. The SEDs were modeled with DustEM models, using the standard Mathis RF, as well as three additional RFs, with stellar clusters ages ranging from 4 Myr to 600 Myr. Standard dust models used to reproduce the Galactic diffuse medium are clearly not able to reproduce the dust emission in the MIR wavelength domain. This analysis evidences the need of adjusting parameters describing the dust size distribution and shows a clear distinct behavior according to the type of environments. In addition, whereas the small grain emission always seems to be negligible at long wavelengths in our Galaxy, the contribution of this small dust component could be more important than expected, in the submm-mm range, in the LMC averaged SED. Properties of the small dust component of the LMC are clearly different from those of our Galaxy. Its abundance, significantly enhanced, could be the result of large grains shattering due to strong shocks or turbulence. In addition, this grain component in the LMC systematically shows smaller grain size in the ionized regions compared to the diffuse medium. Predictions of extinction curves show significantly distinct behaviors depending on the dust models but also from one region to another. Comparison of model predictions with the LMC mean extinction curve shows that no model gives satisfactory agreement using the Mathis radiation field while using a harder radiation field tends to improve the agreement, Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. The Medium-Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) provides one of the four operating modes of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The MRS is an integral field spectrometer, measuring the spatial and spectral distributions of light across the 5-28 $\mu m$ wavelength range with a spectral resolving power between 3700-1300. We present the MRS's optical, spectral, and spectro-photometric performance, as achieved in flight, and we report on the effects that limit the instrument's ultimate sensitivity. The MRS flight performance has been quantified using observations of stars, planetary nebulae, and planets in our Solar System. The precision and accuracy of this calibration was checked against celestial calibrators with well-known flux levels and spectral features. We find that the MRS geometric calibration has a distortion solution accuracy relative to the commanded position of 8 mas at 5 $\mu m$ and 23 mas at 28 $\mu m$. The wavelength calibration is accurate to within 9 km/sec at 5 $\mu m$ and 27 km/sec at 28 $\mu m$. The uncertainty in the absolute spectro-photometric calibration accuracy was estimated at 5.6 +- 0.7 %. The MIRI calibration pipeline is able to suppress the amplitude of spectral fringes to below 1.5 % for both extended and point sources across the entire wavelength range. The MRS point spread function (PSF) is 60 % broader than the diffraction limit along its long axis at 5 $\mu m$ and is 15 % broader at 28 $\mu m$. The MRS flight performance is found to be better than prelaunch expectations. The MRS is one of the most subscribed observing modes of JWST and is yielding many high-profile publications. It is currently humanity's most powerful instrument for measuring the mid-infrared spectra of celestial sources and is expected to continue as such for many years to come., Comment: 16 pages, 21 figures

During the commissioning of {\em JWST}, the Medium-Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) on the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) observed the planetary nebula SMP LMC 058 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The MRS was designed to provide medium resolution (R = $\lambda$/$\Delta\lambda$) 3D spectroscopy in the whole MIRI range. SMP LMC 058 is the only source observed in {\em JWST} commissioning that is both spatially and spectrally unresolved by the MRS and is a good test of {\em JWST's} capabilities. The new MRS spectra reveal a wealth of emission lines not previously detected in this planetary nebula. From these lines, the spectral resolving power ($\lambda$/$\Delta\lambda$) of the MRS is confirmed to be in the range R $=$ 4000 to 1500, depending on the MRS spectral sub-band. In addition, the spectra confirm that the carbon-rich dust emission is from SiC grains and that there is little to no time evolution of the SiC dust and emission line strengths over a 17-year epoch. The MRS is one of the four observing modes of JWST/MIRI. Using JWST in-flight data of unresolved (point) sources, we can derive the MRS absolute spectral response function (ASRF) starting from raw data. Spectral fringing plays a critical role in the derivation and interpretation of the MRS ASRF. In this paper, we present an alternative way to calibrate the data. Firstly, we aim to derive a fringe correction that accounts for the dependence of the fringe properties on the MIRI pupil illumination and detector pixel sampling of the point spread function. Secondly, we aim to derive the MRS ASRF using an absolute flux calibrator observed across the full 5 to 28 $\mu$m wavelength range of the MRS. Thirdly, we aim to apply the new ASRF to the spectrum of a G dwarf and compare with the output of the JWST/MIRI default data reduction pipeline. Finally, we examine the impact of the different fringe corrections on the detectability of molecular features in the G dwarf and K giant. The absolute flux calibrator HD 163466 (A-star) is used to derive tailored point source fringe flats at each of the default dither locations of the MRS. The fringe-corrected point source integrated spectrum of HD 163466 is used to derive the MRS ASRF using a theoretical model for the stellar continuum. A cross-correlation is run to quantify the uncertainty on the detection of CO, SiO, and OH in the K giant and CO in the G dwarf for different fringe corrections. The point-source-tailored fringe correction and ASRF are found to perform at the same level as the current corrections, beating down the fringe contrast to the sub-percent level, whilst mitigating the alteration of real molecular features. The same tailored solutions can be applied to other MRS unresolved targets. We describe the sources of stray light and thermal background that affect JWST observations, report actual backgrounds as measured from commissioning and early-science observations, compare these background levels to prelaunch predictions, estimate the impact of the backgrounds on science performance, and explore how the backgrounds probe the achieved configuration of the deployed observatory. We find that for almost all applications, the observatory is limited by the irreducible astrophysical backgrounds, rather than scattered stray light and thermal self-emission, for all wavelengths lambda < 12.5 micron, thus meeting the level 1 requirement. This result was not assured given the open architecture and thermal challenges of JWST, and it is the result of meticulous attention to stray light and thermal issues in the design, construction, integration, and test phases. From background considerations alone, JWST will require less integration time in the near-infrared compared to a system that just met the stray-light requirements; as such, JWST will be even more powerful than expected for deep imaging at 1-5 micron. In the mid-infrared, the measured thermal backgrounds closely match prelaunch predictions. The background near 10 micron is slightly higher than predicted before launch, but the impact on observations is mitigated by the excellent throughput of MIRI, such that instrument sensitivity will be as good as expected prelaunch. We present a new derivation of the Milky Way's current star formation rate (SFR) based on the data of the Hi-GAL Galactic plane survey. We estimate the distribution of the SFR across the Galactic plane from the star-forming clumps identified in the Hi-GAL survey and calculate the total SFR from the sum of their contributions. The estimate of the global SFR amounts to $2.0 \pm 0.7$~M$_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$, of which $1.7 \pm 0.6$~M$_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$ coming from clumps with reliable heliocentric distance assignment. This value is in general agreement with estimates found in the literature of last decades. The profile of SFR density averaged in Galactocentric rings is found to be qualitatively similar to others previously computed, with a peak corresponding to the Central Molecular Zone and another one around Galactocentric radius $R_\mathrm{gal} \sim 5$~kpc, followed by an exponential decrease as $\log(\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}/[\mathrm{M}_\odot~\mathrm{yr}^{-1}~\mathrm{kpc}^{-2}])=a\,R_\mathrm{gal}/[\mathrm{kpc}]+b $, with $a=-0.28 \pm 0.01$. In this regard, the fraction of SFR produced within and outside the Solar circle is 84\% and 16\%, respectively; the fraction corresponding to the far outer Galaxy ($R_\mathrm{gal} > 13.5$~kpc) is only 1\%. We also find that, for $R_\mathrm{gal}>3$~kpc, our data follow a power law as a function of density, similarly to the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. Finally, we compare the distribution of the SFR density across the face-on Galactic plane and those of median parameters, such as temperature, luminosity/mass ratio and bolometric temperature, describing the evolutionary stage of Hi-GAL clumps. During the commissioning of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the mid-infrared instrument (MIRI) observed NGC6552 with the MIRI Imager and the medium-resolution spectrograph (MRS). NGC6552 is an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at redshift 0.0266 classified as a Seyfert 2 nucleus in the optical, and Compton-thick AGN in X-rays. This work exemplifies and demonstrates the MRS capabilities to study the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectra and characterize the physical conditions and kinematics of the ionized and molecular gas in the nuclear regions of nearby galaxies. We obtained the nuclear, circumnuclear, and central mid-IR spectra of NGC6552. They provide the first clear observational evidence for a nuclear outflow in NGC6552. The outflow contributes to 67$\pm$7% of the total line flux independent of the ionization potential (27 to 187 eV) and critical densities (10$^4$ to 4$\times$10$^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$), showing an average blue-shifted peak velocity of -127$\pm$45 kms$^{-1}$ and an outflow maximal velocity of 698$\pm$80 kms$^{-1}$. Since the mid-IR photons penetrate dusty regions as efficiently as X-ray keV photons, we interpret these results as the evidence for a highly ionized, non-stratified, AGN-powered, and fast outflowing gas in a low density environment (few 10$^{3}$ cm$^{-3}$) located very close (<0.2kpc) to the Compton-thick AGN. Nine pure rotational molecular Hydrogen lines are detected and spectrally resolved, and exhibit symmetric Gaussian profiles, consistent with the galactic rotation, and with no evidence of outflowing H$_{2}$ material. We detect a warm H$_{2}$ mass of $1.9\pm1.1\times10^7 M_{\odot}$ in the central region (1.8 kpc in diameter) of the galaxy, with almost 30% of that mass in the circum-nuclear region. Characterization of directly imaged exoplanets is one of the most eagerly anticipated science functions of the James Webb Space Telescope. MIRI, the mid-IR instrument has the capability to provide unique spatially resolved photometric data points in a spectral range never achieved so far for such objects. We aim to present the very first on-sky contrast measurements of the MIRI's coronagraphs. In addition to a classical Lyot coronagraph at the longest wavelength, this observing mode implements the concept of the four quadrant phase mask for the very first time in a space telescope. We observed single stars together with a series of reference stars to measure raw contrasts as they are delivered on the detector, as well as reference subtracted contrasts. MIRI's coronagraphs achieve raw contrasts greater than $10^3$ at the smallest angular separations (within $1''$) and about $10^5$ further out (beyond $5\sim6''$). Subtracting the residual diffracted light left unattenuated by the coronagraph has the potential to bring the final contrast down to the background and detector limited noise floor at most angular separations (a few times $10^4$ at less than $1''$). MIRI coronagraphs behave as expected from simulations. In particular the raw contrasts for all four coronagraphs are fully consistent with the diffractive model. Contrasts obtained with subtracting reference stars also meet expectations and are fully demonstrated for two four quadrant phase masks (F1065C and F1140C). The worst contrast, measured at F1550C, is very likely due to a variation of the phase aberrations at the primary mirror during the observations, and not an issue of the coronagraph itself. We did not perform reference star subtraction with the Lyot mask at F2300C, but we anticipate that it would bring the contrast down to the noise floor., Comment: submitted to A&A

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. We evaluate the hit rate of cosmic rays and their daughter particles on the Si:As IBC detectors in the IRAC instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The hit rate follows the ambient proton flux closely, but the hits occur at more than twice the rate expected just from this flux. Toward large amplitudes, the size distribution of hits by single-charge particles (muons) follows the Landau Distribution. The amplitudes of the hits are distributed to well below the energy loss of a traditional ``average minimum-ionizing proton'' as a result of statistical fluctuations in the ionization loss within the detectors. Nonetheless, hits with amplitudes less than a few hundred electrons are rare; this places nearly all hits in an amplitude range that is readily identified given the read noises of modern solid-state detectors. The spread of individual hits over multiple pixels is dominated by geometric effects, i.e., the range of incident angles, but shows a modest excess probably due to: (1) showering and scattering of particles; (2) the energy imparted on the ionization products by the energetic protons; and (3) interpixel capacitance. The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on-board JWST will provide imaging, coronagraphy, low-resolution spectroscopy and medium-resolution spectroscopy at unprecedented sensitivity levels in the mid-infrared wavelength range. The Medium-Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) of MIRI is an integral field spectrograph that provides diffraction-limited spectroscopy between 4.9 and 28.3 um, within a FOV varying from 13 to 56" square. From ground testing, we calculate the physical parameters essential to general observers and calibrating the wavelength solution and resolving power of the MRS is critical for maximising the scientific performance of the instrument. We have used ground-based observations of discrete spectral features in combination with Fabry-Perot etalon spectra to characterize the wavelength solution and spectral resolving power of the MRS. We present the methodology used to derive the MRS spectral characterisation, which includes the precise wavelength coverage of each MRS sub-band, computation of the resolving power as a function of wavelength, and measuring slice-dependent spectral distortions. The resolving power varies from R3500 in channel 1 to R1500 in channel 4. Based on the ground test data, the wavelength calibration accuracy is estimated to be below one tenth of a pixel, with small systematic shifts due to the target position within a slice for unresolved sources, that have a maximum amplitude of about 0.25 spectral resolution elements. Based on ground test data, the MRS complies with the spectral requirements for both the R and wavelength accuracy for which it was designed. We present the $360^\circ$ catalogue of physical properties of Hi-GAL compact sources, detected between 70 and 500 $\mu$m. This release not only completes the analogous catalogue previously produced by the Hi-GAL collaboration for $-71^\circ \lesssim \ell \lesssim 67^\circ$, but also meaningfully improves it thanks to a new set of heliocentric distances, 120808 in total. About a third of the 150223 entries are located in the newly added portion of the Galactic plane. A first classification based on detection at 70 $\mu$m as a signature of ongoing star-forming activity distinguishes between protostellar sources (23~per cent of the total) and starless sources, with the latter further classified as gravitationally bound (pre-stellar) or unbound. The integral of the spectral energy distribution, including ancillary photometry from $\lambda=21$ to 1100 $\mu$m, gives the source luminosity and other bolometric quantities, while a modified black body fitted to data for $\lambda \geq 160\, \mu$m yields mass and temperature. All tabulated clump properties are then derived using photometry and heliocentric distance, where possible. Statistics of these quantities are discussed with respect to both source Galactic location and evolutionary stage. No strong differences in the distributions of evolutionary indicators are found between the inner and outer Galaxy. However, masses and densities in the inner Galaxy are on average significantly larger, resulting in a higher number of clumps that are candidates to host massive star formation. Median behaviour of distance-independent parameters tracing source evolutionary status is examined as a function of the Galactocentric radius, showing no clear evidence of correlation with spiral arm positions., Comment: accepted by MNRAS, april 2021

Supernovae remnants (SNRs) represent a major feedback source from stars on the interstellar medium of galaxies. During the latest stage of supernovae explosions, shock waves produced by the initial blast modify the chemistry of gas and dust, inject kinetic energy in the surroundings, and may alter star formation characteristics. Simultaneously, gamma-ray emission is generated by the interaction between the ambiant medium and the cosmic rays. We study the stellar and interstellar contents of IC443, an evolved shell type SNR at a distance of 1.9 kpc, with an estimated age of 30 kyr. We aim to measure the mass of the gas within the extended G region, which corresponds to the peak of gamma-ray emission detected by VERITAS and Fermi. We performed 10'x10' mapped observations of 12CO and 13CO J=1-0, J=2-1 and J=3-2 pure rotational lines, as well as C18O J=1-0 and J=2-1 obtained with the IRAM-30m and APEX telescopes. We first compared our data with local thermodynamic equilbrium (LTE) models. We estimated the optical depth of each line from the emission of the isotopologues 13CO and C18O. We used the population diagram and large velocity gradient (LVG) assumption to measure the column density, mass, and kinetic temperature of the gas using 12CO and 13CO lines. We used complementary data (stars, gas, and dust at multiple wavelengths) and infrared point source catalogues to search for protostar candidates. Our results emphasize how the mass associated with the ring-like structure and the cloudlet cannot be overlooked when quantifying the interaction of cosmic rays with the dense local medium. Additionally, the presence of numerous possible protostars in the region might represent a fresh source of CR, which must also be taken into account in the interpretation of gamma-ray observations in this region.

We present complicated dust structures within multiple regions of the candidate supernova remnant (SNR) the `Tornado' (G357.7-0.1) using observations with Spitzer and Herschel. We use Point Process Mapping, PPMAP, to investigate the distribution of dust in the Tornado at a resolution of 8", compared to the native telescope beams of 5-36". We find complex dust structures at multiple temperatures within both the head and the tail of the Tornado, ranging from 15 to 60K. Cool dust in the head forms a shell, with some overlap with the radio emission, which envelopes warm dust at the X-ray peak. Akin to the terrestrial sandy whirlwinds known as `Dust Devils', we find a large mass of dust contained within the Tornado. We derive a total dust mass for the Tornado head of 16.7 solar masses, assuming a dust absorption coefficient of kappa_300 =0.56m^2 kg^1, which can be explained by interstellar material swept up by a SNR expanding in a dense region. The X-ray, infra-red, and radio emission from the Tornado head indicate that this is a SNR. The origin of the tail is more unclear, although we propose that there is an X-ray binary embedded in the SNR, the outflow from which drives into the SNR shell. This interaction forms the helical tail structure in a similar manner to that of the SNR W50 and microquasar SS433., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures + 3 appendix figures. We search for far-infrared (FIR) counterparts of known supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Galactic plane (360 degrees in longitude and b = +/- 1 deg ) at 70 - 500 micron with Herschel. We detect dust signatures in 39 SNRs out of 190, made up of 13 core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), including 4 Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe), and 2 Type Ia SNe. A further 24 FIR detected SNRs have unknown types. We confirm the FIR detection of ejecta dust within G350.1-0.3, adding to the known sample of ~10 SNRs containing ejecta dust. We discover dust features at the location of a radio core at the centre of G351.2+0.1, indicating FIR emission coincident with a possible Crab-like compact object, with dust temperature and mass of Td = 45.8 K and Md = 0.18 solar mass, similar to the PWN G54.1+0.3. We show that the detection rate is higher among young SNRs. We produce dust temperature maps of 11 SNRs and mass maps of those with distance estimates, finding dust at temperatures 15 < Td < 40 K. If the dust is heated by shock interactions the shocked gas must be relatively cool and/or have a low density to explain the observed low grain temperatures., Comment: 25 pages, 26 figures. The recent data collected by {\it Herschel} have confirmed that interstellar structures with filamentary shape are ubiquitously present in the Milky Way. Filaments are thought to be formed by several physical mechanisms acting from the large Galactic scales down to the sub-pc fractions of molecular clouds, and they might represent a possible link between star formation and the large-scale structure of the Galaxy. In order to study this potential link, a statistically significant sample of filaments spread throughout the Galaxy is required. In this work we present the first catalogue of $32,059$ candidate filaments automatically identified in the Hi-GAL survey of the entire Galactic Plane. For these objects we determined morphological (length, $l^{a}$, and geometrical shape) and physical (average column density, $N_{\rm H_{2}}$, and average temperature, $T$) properties. We identified filaments with a wide range of properties: 2$'$\,$\leq l^{a}\leq$\, 100$'$, $10^{20} \leq N_{\rm H_{2}} \leq 10^{23}$\,cm$^{-2}$ and $10 \leq T\leq$ 35\,K. We discuss their association with the Hi-GAL compact sources, finding that the most tenuous (and stable) structures do not host any major condensation and we also assign a distance to $\sim 18,400$ filaments for which we determine mass, physical size, stability conditions and Galactic distribution. When compared to the spiral arms structure, we find no significant difference between the physical properties of on-arm and inter-arm filaments. We compared our sample with previous studies, finding that our Hi-GAL filament catalogue represents a significant extension in terms of Galactic coverage and sensitivity. We present Spitzer (IRAC) images observations and a VLT 2.1micron image of the HH 212 outflow. We find that this outflow has a strong symmetry, with jet/counterjet knot pairs with Delta x less than 1 arcsec position offsets. We deduce that the jet/counterjet knots are ejected with time differences Delta tau_0 approx. 6 yr and velocity differences Delta v_0~ 2 km/s. We also analyze the deviations of the knot positions perpendicular to the outflow axis, and interpret them in terms of a binary orbital motion of the outflow source. Through this model, we deduce a ~0.7M_solar mass for the outflow source, and a separation of ~80 AU between the components of the binary (assuming equal masses for the two components). Finally, using the IRAC data and the VLT 2.1micron image we have measured the proper motion velocities, obtaining values from 50 to 170km/s., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in RevMexAstrAstrf

During star formation, the accretion disk drives fast MHD winds which usually contain two components, a collimated jet and a radially distributed wide-angle wind. These winds entrain the surrounding ambient gas producing molecular outflows. We report recent observation of 12CO (2-1) emission of the HH 46/47 molecular outflow by the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array, in which we identify multiple wide-angle outflowing shell structures in both the blue and red-shifted outflow lobes. These shells are highly coherent in position-position-velocity space, extending to >40-50 km/s in velocity and 10^4 au in space with well defined morphology and kinematics. We suggest these outflowing shells are the result of the entrainment of ambient gas by a series of outbursts from an intermittent wide-angle wind. Episodic outbursts in collimated jets are commonly observed, yet detection of a similar behavior in wide-angle winds has been elusive. Here we show clear evidence that the wide-angle component of the HH 46/47 protostellar outflows experiences similar variability seen in the collimated component., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted to ApJ

In this present analysis we investigate the dust properties associated with the different gas phases (including the ionized phase this time) of the LMC molecular clouds at 1$^{\prime}$ angular resolution (four times greater than a previous analysis) and with a larger spectral coverage range thanks to Herschel data. We also ensure the robustness of our results in the framework of various dust models. We performed a decomposition of the dust emission in the infrared (3.6 $\mic$ to 500 $\mic$) associated with the atomic, molecular, and ionized gas phases in the molecular clouds of the LMC. The resulting spectral energy distributions were fitted with four distinct dust models. We then analyzed the model parameters such as the intensity of the radiation field and the relative dust abundances, as well as the slope of the emission spectra at long wavelengths. This work allows dust models to be compared with infrared data in various environments for the first time, which reveals important differences between the models at short wavelengths in terms of data fitting (mainly in the PAH bands). In addition, this analysis points out distinct results according to the gas phases, such as dust composition directly affecting the dust temperature and the dust emissivity in the submm, and different dust emission in the near-infrared (NIR). We observe direct evidence of dust property evolution from the diffuse to the dense medium in a large sample of molecular clouds in the LMC. In addition, the differences in the dust component abundances between the gas phases could indicate different origins of grain formation. We also point out the presence of a NIR-continuum in all gas phases, with an enhancement in the ionized gas. The luminous blue variable (LBV) RMC143 is located in the outskirts of the 30~Doradus complex, a region rich with interstellar material and hot luminous stars. We report the $3\sigma$ sub-millimetre detection of its circumstellar nebula with ALMA. The observed morphology in the sub-millimetre is different than previously observed with HST and ATCA in the optical and centimetre wavelength regimes. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of RMC143 suggests that two emission mechanisms contribute to the sub-mm emission: optically thin bremsstrahlung and dust. Both the extinction map and the SED are consistent with a dusty massive nebula with a dust mass of $0.055\pm0.018~M_{\odot}$ (assuming $\kappa_{850}=1.7\rm\,cm^{2}\,g^{-1}$). To date, RMC143 has the most dusty LBV nebula observed in the Magellanic Clouds. We have also re-examined the LBV classification of RMC143 based on VLT/X-shooter spectra obtained in 2015/16 and a review of the publication record. The radiative transfer code CMFGEN is used to derive its fundamental stellar parameters. We find an effective temperature of $\sim 8500$~K, luminosity of log$(L/L_{\odot}) = 5.32$, and a relatively high mass-loss rate of $1.0 \times 10^{-5}~M_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$. The luminosity is much lower than previously thought, which implies that the current stellar mass of $\sim8~M_{\odot}$ is comparable to its nebular mass of $\sim 5.5~M_{\odot}$ (from an assumed gas-to-dust ratio of 100), suggesting that the star has lost a large fraction of its initial mass in past LBV eruptions or binary interactions. While the star may have been hotter in the past, it is currently not hot enough to ionize its circumstellar nebula. We search for far-infrared (FIR) counterparts of known supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Galactic plane (10 deg <| l |< 60 deg) at 70-500 micron using the Herschel Infrared Galactic Plane Survey (Hi-GAL). Of 71 sources studied, we find that 29 (41 per cent) SNRs have a clear FIR detection of dust emission associated with the SNR. Dust from 8 of these is in the central region, and 4 indicate pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) heated ejecta dust. A further 23 have dust emission in the outer shell structures which is potentially related to swept up material. Many Galactic SNe have dust signatures but we are biased towards detecting ejecta dust in young remnants and those with a heating source (shock or PWN). We estimate the dust temperature and mass contained within three PWNe, G11.2-0.3, G21.5-0.9, and G29.7-0.3 using modified blackbody fits. To more rigorously analyse the dust properties at various temperatures and dust emissivity index beta, we use point process mapping (PPMAP). We find significant quantities of cool dust (at 20-40 K) with dust masses of Md = 0.34 +/- 0.14 solar mass, Md = 0.29 +/- 0.08 solar mass, and Md = 0.51 +/- 0.13 solar mass for G11.2-0.3, G21.5-0.9, and G29.7-0.3 respectively. We derive the dust emissivity index for the PWN ejecta dust in G21.5-0.3 to be beta = 1.4 +/- 0.5 compared to dust in the surrounding medium where beta = 1.8 +/- 0.1., Comment: 33 pages and 39 figures. The early evolutionary stage of brown dwarfs are not very well characterized, specially during the embedded phase. To gain insight into the dominant formation mechanism of very low-mass objects and brown dwarfs, we conducted deep observations at 870$\mu$m with the LABOCA bolometer at the APEX telescope. Our goal was to identify young sub-mm sources in the Barnard 30 dark cloud. We complemented these data with multi-wavelength observations from the optical to the far-IR and. As a result, we have identified 34 submm sources and a substantial number of possible and probable Barnard 30 members within each individual APEX/LABOCA beam. They can be classified in three distinct groups. First, 15 out of these 34 have a clear optical or IR counterpart to the submm peak and nine of them are potential proto-BDs candidates. Moreover, a substantial number of them could be multiple systems. A second group of 13 sources comprises candidate members with significant infrared excesses located away from the central submm emission. All of them include brown dwarf candidates, some displaying IR excess, but their association with submm emission is unclear. In addition, we have found six starless cores and, based on the total dust mass estimate, three might be pre-substellar (or pre-BDs) cores. Finally, the complete characterization of our APEX/LABOCA sources, focusing on those detected at 24 and/or 70 $\mu$m, indicates that in our sample of 34 submm sources there are, at least: two WTTs, four CTTs, five young stellar objects (YSOs), eight proto-BD candidates (with another three dubious cases), and one Very Low Luminosity object (VeLLO)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The formation and evolution of cold diffuse clouds (CDCs), the parent objects of dense molecular clouds, affects both the star formation process and that of larger-scale galactic evolution. We have begun a pilot study of one CDC's dust content, with the goal of quantifying the abundances of different types of dust and relating these to the relative abundance of molecular gas, the cloud's physical properties, and its general stage of development. Using photometry from AKARI and other surveys, we have extracted a sample spectral energy distribution (SED) of the CDC dust thermal emission over the near-infrared to submillimeter range. The extracted SED closely resembles others in the literature, confirming our isolation of the cloud emission from other sources along the sight line. Pandeia is the exposure time calculator (ETC) system developed for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) that will be used for creating JWST proposals. It includes a simulation-hybrid Python engine that calculates the two-dimensional pixel-by-pixel signal and noise properties of the JWST instruments. This allows for appropriate handling of realistic point spread functions, MULTIACCUM detector readouts, correlated detector readnoise, and multiple photometric and spectral extraction strategies. Pandeia includes support for all the JWST observing modes, including imaging, slitted/slitless spectroscopy, integral field spectroscopy, and coronagraphy. Its highly modular, data-driven design makes it easily adaptable to other observatories. An implementation for use with WFIRST is also available.

Hi-GAL is a large-scale survey of the Galactic plane, performed with Herschel in five infrared continuum bands between 70 and 500 $\mu$m. We present a band-merged catalogue of spatially matched sources and their properties derived from fits to the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and heliocentric distances, based on the photometric catalogs presented in Molinari et al. (2016a), covering the portion of Galactic plane $-71.0^{\circ}< \ell < 67.0^{\circ}$. The band-merged catalogue contains 100922 sources with a regular SED, 24584 of which show a 70 $\mu$m counterpart and are thus considered proto-stellar, while the remainder are considered starless. Thanks to this huge number of sources, we are able to carry out a preliminary analysis of early stages of star formation, identifying the conditions that characterise different evolutionary phases on a statistically significant basis. We calculate surface densities to investigate the gravitational stability of clumps and their potential to form massive stars. We also explore evolutionary status metrics such as the dust temperature, luminosity and bolometric temperature, finding that these are higher in proto-stellar sources compared to pre-stellar ones. The surface density of sources follows an increasing trend as they evolve from pre-stellar to proto-stellar, but then it is found to decrease again in the majority of the most evolved clumps. Finally, we study the physical parameters of sources with respect to Galactic longitude and the association with spiral arms, finding only minor or no differences between the average evolutionary status of sources in the fourth and first Galactic quadrants, or between "on-arm" and "inter-arm" positions., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We present a comprehensive statistical analysis of star-forming objects located in the vicinities of 1 360 bubble structures throughout the Galactic Plane and their local environments. The compilation of ~70 000 star-forming sources, found in the proximity of the ionized (Hii) regions and detected in both Hi-GAL and GLIMPSE surveys, provided a broad overview of the different evolutionary stages of star-formation in bubbles, from prestellar objects to more evolved young stellar objects (YSOs). Surface density maps of star-forming objects clearly reveal an evolutionary trend where more evolved star-forming objects are found spatially located near the center, while younger star-forming objects are found at the edge of the bubbles. We derived dynamic ages for a subsample of 182 Hii regions for which kinematic distances and radio continuum flux measurements were available. We detect ~80% more star-forming sources per unit area in the direction of bubbles than in the surrounding fields. We estimate ~10% clump formation efficiency (CFE) of Hi-GAL clumps in bubbles, twice the CFE in fields not affected by feedback. We find higher CFE of protostellar clumps in younger bubbles, whose density of the bubble shells is higher. We argue that the formation rate from prestellar to protostellar phase is probably higher during the early stages of the bubble expansion. Evaluation of the fragmentation time inside the shell of bubbles advocates the preexistence of clumps in the medium before the bubble, as supported by numerical simulations. Approximately 23% of the Hi-GAL clumps are found located in the direction of a bubble, with 15% for prestellar clumps and 41% for protostellar clumps. We argue that the high fraction of protostellar clumps may be due to the acceleration of the star-formation process cause by the feedback of the (Hii) bubbles., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. We present ALMA and ATCA observations of the luminous blue variable \rmc. The radio maps show for the first time the core of the nebula and evidence that the nebula is strongly asymmetric with a Z-pattern shape. Hints of this morphology are also visible in the archival \emph{HST} $\rm H\alpha$ image, which overall resembles the radio emission. The emission mechanism in the outer nebula is optically thin free-free in the radio. At high frequencies, a component of point-source emission appears at the position of the star, up to the ALMA frequencies. The rising flux density distribution ($S_{\nu}\sim \nu^{0.78\pm0.05}$) of this object suggests thermal emission from the ionized stellar wind and indicates a departure from spherical symmetry with $n_{e}(r)\propto r^{-2}$. We examine different scenarios to explain this excess of thermal emission from the wind and show that this can arise from a bipolar outflow, supporting the suggestion by other authors that the stellar wind of \rmc is aspherical. We fit the data with two collimated ionized wind models and we find that the mass-loss rate can be a factor of two or more smaller than in the spherical case. We also fit the photometry obtained by IR space telescopes and deduce that the mid- to far-IR emission must arise from extended, cool ($\sim80\,\rm K$) dust within the outer ionized nebula. Finally we discuss two possible scenarios for the nebular morphology: the canonical single star expanding shell geometry, and a precessing jet model assuming presence of a companion star., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (minor revision included)

The James Webb Space Telescope's Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS), will offer nearly 2 orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity and >3X improvement in spectral resolution over our previous space-based mid-IR spectrometer, the Spitzer IRS. In this paper, we make predictions for spectroscopic pointed observations and serendipitous detections with the MRS. Specifically, pointed observations of Herschel sources require only a few minutes on source integration for detections of several star-forming and active galactic nucleus lines, out to z$=$3 and beyond. But the same data will also include tens of serendipitous 0$\lesssim$z$\lesssim$4 galaxies per field with infrared luminosities ranging $\sim10^6-10^{13}$L$_{\odot}$. In particular, for the first time and for free we will be able to explore the $L_{IR}<10^{9}L_{\odot}$ regime out to $z\sim3$. We estimate that with $\sim$100 such fields, statistics of these detections will be sufficient to constrain the evolution of the low-$L$ end of the infrared luminosity function, and hence the star formation rate function. The above conclusions hold for a wide range in potential low-$L$ end of the IR luminosity function, and accounting for the PAH deficit in low-$L$, low-metallicity galaxies., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the physical and evolutionary properties of prestellar and protostellar clumps in the Herschel Infrared GALactic plane survey (Hi-GAL) in two large areas centered in the Galactic plane and covering the tips of the long Galactic bar at the intersection with the spiral arms. The areas fall in the longitude ranges 19 < l < 33 and 340 < l < 350, while latitude is -1 < b < 1. Newly formed high mass stars and prestellar objects are identified and their properties derived and compared. A study is also presented on five giant molecular complexes at the further edge of the bar. The star-formation rate was estimated from the quantity of proto-stars expected to form during the collapse of massive turbulent clumps into star clusters. This new method was developed by applying a Monte Carlo procedure to an evolutionary model of turbulent cores and takes into account the wide multiplicity of sources produced during the collapse. The star-formation rate density values at the tips are 1.2 +- 0.3 10-3 Msol/yr/kpc2 and 1.5+-0.3 10-3 Msol/yr/kpc2 in the first and fourth quadrant, respectively. The same values estimated on the entire field of view, that is including the tips of the bar and background and foreground regions, are 0.9+-0.2 10-3 Msol/yr/kpc2 and 0.8+-0.2 10-3 Msol/yr/kpc2. The conversion efficiency is approximately 0.8% in the first quadrant and 0.5% in the fourth quadrant, and does not show a significant difference in proximity of the bar. The star forming regions identified through CO contours at the further edge of the bar show star-formation rate densities larger than the surrounding regions but their conversion efficiencies are comparable. Our results suggest that the star-formation activity at the bar is due to a large amount of dust and molecular material rather than being due to a triggering process., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We describe the sources of stray light and thermal background that affect JWST observations; report actual backgrounds as measured from commissioning and early science observations; compare those background levels to pre-launch predictions; estimate the impact of the backgrounds on science performance; and explore how the backgrounds probe the achieved configuration of the deployed observatory. We find the observatory is limited by the irreducible astrophysical backgrounds, rather than scattered stray light and thermal self-emission, for all wavelengths λ<12.5 micron, thus meeting the level 1 requirement. This result was not assured given the open architecture and thermal challenges of JWST, and is the result of meticulous attention to stray light and thermal issues in the design, construction, integration, and test phases. From background considerations alone, JWST will require less integration time in the near-infrared compared to a system that just met the stray light requirements; as such, JWST will be even more powerful than expected for deep imaging at 1--5 micron. In the mid-infrared, the measured thermal backgrounds closely match pre-launch predictions. The background near 10 micron is slightly higher than predicted before launch, but the impact on observations is mitigated by the excellent throughput of MIRI, such that instrument sensitivity will be as good as expected pre-launch. These measured background levels are fully compatible with JWST's science goals and the Cycle 1 science program currently underway.

We present new observations of the nebula around the Magellanic candidate Luminous Blue Variable S61. These comprise high-resolution data acquired with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Atacama Large Millimetre/Submillimetre Array (ALMA), and VISIR at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The nebula was detected only in the radio, up to 17 GHz. The 17 GHz ATCA map, with 0.8 arcsec resolution, allowed a morphological comparison with the H$\alpha$ Hubble Space Telescope image. The radio nebula resembles a spherical shell, as in the optical. The spectral index map indicates that the radio emission is due to free-free transitions in the ionised, optically thin gas, but there are hints of inhomogeneities. We present our new public code RHOCUBE to model 3D density distributions, and determine via Bayesian inference the nebula's geometric parameters. We applied the code to model the electron density distribution in the S61 nebula. We found that different distributions fit the data, but all of them converge to the same ionised mass, ~0.1 $\rm M\odot$, which is an order of magnitude smaller than previous estimates. We show how the nebula models can be used to derive the mass-loss history with high-temporal resolution. The nebula was probably formed through stellar winds, rather than eruptions. From the ALMA and VISIR non-detections, plus the derived extinction map, we deduce that the infrared emission observed by space telescopes must arise from extended, diffuse dust within the ionised region., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures. (Abridged) We present the first public release of high-quality data products (DR1) from Hi-GAL, the {\em Herschel} infrared Galactic Plane Survey. Hi-GAL is the keystone of a suite of continuum Galactic Plane surveys from the near-IR to the radio, and covers five wavebands at 70, 160, 250, 350 and 500 micron, encompassing the peak of the spectral energy distribution of cold dust for 8 < T < 50K. This first Hi-GAL data release covers the inner Milky Way in the longitude range 68{\deg} > l > -70{\deg} in a |b|<1{\deg} latitude strip. Photometric maps have been produced with the ROMAGAL pipeline, that optimally capitalizes on the excellent sensitivity and stability of the bolometer arrays of the {\em Herschel} PACS and SPIRE photometric cameras, to deliver images of exquisite quality and dynamical range, absolutely calibrated with {\em Planck} and {\em IRAS}, and recovering extended emission at all wavelengths and all spatial scales. The compact source catalogues have been generated with the CuTEx algorithm, specifically developed to optimize source detection and extraction in the extreme conditions of intense and spatially varying background that are found in the Galactic Plane in the thermal infrared. Hi-GAL DR1 images will be accessible via a dedicated web-based image cutout service. The DR1 Compact Source Catalogues are delivered as single-band photometric lists containing, in addition to source position, peak and integrated flux and source sizes, a variety of parameters useful to assess the quality and reliability of the extracted sources, caveats and hints to help this assessment are provided. Flux completeness limits in all bands are determined from extensive synthetic source experiments and depend on the specific line of sight along the Galactic Plane. We present ALMA Cycle 1 observations of the HH46/47 molecular outflow using combined 12m array and ACA observations. The improved angular resolution and sensitivity of our multi-line maps reveal structures that help us study the entrainment process in much more detail and allow us to obtain more precise estimates of outflow properties than previous observations. We use 13CO(1-0) and C18O(1-0) emission to correct for the 12CO(1-0) optical depth to accurately estimate the outflow mass, momentum and kinetic energy. This correction increases the estimates of the mass, momentum and kinetic energy by factors of about 9, 5 and 2, respectively, with respect to estimates assuming optically thin emission. The new 13CO and C18O data also allow us to trace denser and slower outflow material than that traced by the 12CO maps, and they reveal an outflow cavity wall at very low velocities (as low as 0.2km/s with respect to the cores central velocity). Adding with the slower material traced only by 13CO and C18O, there is another factor of 3 increase in the mass estimate and 50% increase in the momentum estimate. The estimated outflow properties indicate that the outflow is capable of dispersing the parent core within the typical lifetime of the embedded phase of a low-mass protostar, and that it is responsible for a core-to-star efficiency of 1/4 to 1/3. We find that the outflow cavity wall is composed of multiple shells associated with a series of jet bow-shock events. Within about 3000AU of the protostar the 13CO and C18O emission trace a circumstellar envelope with both rotation and infall motions, which we compare with a simple analytic model. The CS(2-1) emission reveals tentative evidence of a slowly-moving rotating outflow, which we suggest is entrained not only poloidally but also toroidally by a disk wind that is launched from relatively large radii from the source., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 26 pages, 20 figures

We use the Herschel Hi-GAL survey data to study the spatial distribution in Galactic longitude and latitude of the interstellar medium and of dense, star-forming clumps in the inner Galaxy. The peak position and width of the latitude distribution of the dust column density as well as of number density of compact sources from the band-merged Hi-GAL photometric catalogues are analysed as a function of longitude. The width of the diffuse dust column density traced by the Hi-GAL 500 micron emission varies across the inner Galaxy, with a mean value of 1{\deg}.2-1{\deg}.3, similar to that of the 250um Hi-GAL sources. 70um Hi-GAL sources define a much thinner disk, with a mean FWHM of 0{\deg}.75, and an average latitude of b=0{\deg}.06, coincident with the results from ATLASGAL. The GLAT distribution as a function of GLON shows modulations, both for the diffuse emission and for the compact sources, with ~0{\deg}.2 displacements mostly toward negative latitudes at l~ +40{\deg}, +12{\deg}, -25{\deg} and -40{\deg}. No such modulations can be found in the MIPSGAL 24 or WISE 22 um data when the entire source samples are considered. The distortions revealed by Herschel are interpreted as large-scale bending modes of the Plane. The lack of similar distortions in tracers of more evolved YSOs or stars rules out gravitational instabilities or satellite-induced perturbations, as they should act on both the diffuse and stellar disk components. We propose that the observed bends are caused by incoming flows of extra-planar gas interacting with the gaseous disk. Stars decouple from the gaseous ISM and relax into the stellar disk potential. We carry out a multiwavelength study to characterize the HI supershell designated GS 118+01-44, and to analyse its possible origin. A multiwavlength study has been carried out to study the supershell and its environs. We performed an analysis of the HI, CO, radio continuum, and infrared emission distributions. The Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) HI data reveals that GS 118+01-44 is centred at (l, b) = (117.7, 1.4) with a systemic velocity of -44.3 km/s. According to Galactic rotation models this structure is located at 3.0 +- 0.6 kpc from the Sun. There are several HII regions and three supernova remnants (SNRs) catalogued in the region. On the other hand, the analysis of the temperature spectral index distribution shows that in the region there is a predominance of non-thermal emission. Infrared emission shows that cool temperatures dominate the area of the supershell. Concerning the origin of the structure, we found that even though several OB stars belonging to Cas OB5 are located in the interior of GS 118+01-44, an analysis of the energy injected by these stars through their stellar winds indicates that they do not have sufficient energy to create GS 118+01-44. Therefore, an additional energy source is needed to explain the genesis of GS 118+01-44. On the other hand, the presence of several HII regions and young stellar object candidates in the edges of GS 118+01-44 shows that the region is still active in forming new stars., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The detection of an excess of emission at microwave frequencies with respect to the predicted free-free emission has been reported for several Galactic HII regions. Here, we investigate the case of RCW 49, for which the Cosmic Background Imager tentatively (~ 3 sigma) detected Anomalous Microwave Emission at 31 GHz on angular scales of 7'. Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we carried out a multi-frequency (5 GHz, 19 GHz and 34 GHz) continuum study of the region, complemented by observations of the H109$\alpha$ radio recombination line. The analysis shows that: 1) the spatial correlation between the microwave and IR emission persists on angular scales from 3.4' to 0.4", although the degree of the correlation slightly decreases at higher frequencies and on smaller angular scales, 2) the spectral indices between 1.4 and 5 GHz are globally in agreement with optically thin free-free emission, however, ~ 30% of these are positive and much greater than -0.1, consistently with a stellar wind scenario, 3) no major evidence for inverted free-free radiation is found, indicating that this is likely not the cause of the Anomalous Emission in RCW 49. Although our results cannot rule out the spinning dust hypothesis to explain the tentative detection of Anomalous Microwave emission in RCW 49, they emphasize the complexity of astronomical sources very well known and studied such as HII regions, and suggest that, at least in these objects, the reported excess of emission might be ascribed to alternative mechanisms such as stellar winds and shocks., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 11 pages, 8 figures

Recently discovered scattered light from molecular cloud cores in the wavelength range 3-5 {\mu}m (called "coreshine") seems to indicate the presence of grains with sizes above 0.5 {\mu}m. We aim to analyze 3.6 and 4.5 {\mu}m coreshine from molecular cloud cores to probe the largest grains in the size distribution. We analyzed dedicated deep Cycle 9 Spitzer IRAC observations in the 3.6 and 4.5 {\mu}m bands for a sample of 10 low-mass cores. We used a new modeling approach based on a combination of ratios of the two background- and foreground-subtracted surface brightnesses and observed limits of the optical depth. The dust grains were modeled as ice-coated silicate and carbonaceous spheres. We discuss the impact of local radiation fields with a spectral slope differing from what is seen in the DIRBE allsky maps. For the cores L260, ecc806, L1262, L1517A, L1512, and L1544, the model reproduces the data with maximum grain sizes around 0.9, 0.5, 0.65, 1.5, 0.6, and > 1.5 {\mu}m, respectively. The maximum coreshine intensities of L1506C, L1439, and L1498 in the individual bands require smaller maximum grain sizes than derived from the observed distribution of band ratios. Additional isotropic local radiation fields with a spectral shape differing from the DIRBE map shape do not remove this discrepancy. In the case of Rho Oph 9, we were unable to reliably disentangle the coreshine emission from background variations and the strong local PAH emission. Considering surface brightness ratios in the 3.6 and 4.5 {\mu}m bands across a molecular cloud core is an effective method of disentangling the complex interplay of structure and opacities when used in combination with observed limits of the optical depth., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We have identified outflows and bubbles in the Taurus molecular cloud based on the $\sim 100$ deg$^2$ Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory $^{12}$CO(1-0) and $^{13}$CO(1-0) maps and the Spitzer young stellar object catalogs. In the main 44 deg$^2$ area of Taurus we found 55 outflows, of which 31 were previously unknown. We also found 37 bubbles in the entire 100 deg$^2$ area of Taurus, all of which had not been found before. The total kinetic energy of the identified outflows is estimated to be $\bf \sim 3.9 \times 10^{45}$ erg, which is \textbf{1\%} of the cloud turbulent energy. The total kinetic energy of the detected bubbles is estimated to be $\sim 9.2 \times 10^{46}$ erg, which is 29\% of the turbulent energy of Taurus. The energy injection rate from outflows is $\bf \sim 1.3 \times 10^{33}~\rm erg\ s^{-1}$, \textbf{0.4 - 2 times} the dissipation rate of the cloud turbulence. The energy injection rate from bubbles is $\sim 6.4 \times 10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$, \textbf{2 - 10 times} the turbulent dissipation rate of the cloud. The gravitational binding energy of the cloud is $\bf \sim 1.5 \times 10^{48}$ {\bf erg}, \textbf{385} and 16 times the energy of outflows and bubbles, respectively. We conclude that neither outflows nor bubbles can \textbf{provide enough energy to balance the overall gravitational binding energy and the turbulent energy of Taurus.
