Socio-relational aspects are essential for mental wellbeing (MWB), especially in the oldest old age. Our study aims to explore the socio-relational aspects related to MWB in accordance with the experiences of the oldest old of four European countries; and to examine how these differ between Mediterranean and Nordic people. A total of 117 participants aged 80+ years old were recruited, and 23 focus groups were performed. Qualitative content analysis identified five main themes. Family seemed to be the most important driver of the MWB of the oldest old, followed by relationships with close friends. Participants felt better when they had a sense of being needed, cared for, and connected. Loneliness and isolation negatively affected MWB, although solitude was appreciated. Differences appeared between Mediterranean and Nordic regions. Initiatives to promote positive interactions with family and friends, as well as social activities within the community, may contribute to strengthening MWB in the oldest old. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on the role of information and communication technology (ICT) use for active aging is limited. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the link between Internet use and mental health among older adults. The review was conducted based on searches in 9 electronic databases (2002-2014). A meta-synthesis approach was applied, examining quantitative (18) and qualitative (14) studies. The findings from the synthesis of quantitative statistical data indicate an overall positive association between Internet use and mental health and its psychosocial covariates in later life. The psychosocial links between Internet use and mental health identified from the qualitative data were (a) enhanced interpersonal interaction at individual level, (b) increased access to resources within the community, and (c) empowered social inclusion at society level. This study examined associations between problem gambling and type of gambling engagement (online, land-based or both), psychological distress, alcohol-related problems and demographics among male (n = 1438) and female (n = 1546) past-year gamblers in Western Finland. In this sample, 7.6% of men and 3.1% of women were screened as problem gamblers. Logistic regression analyses were used to study the associations for men and women separately. Among men, engaging in both land-based and online gambling or engaging in online gambling only and psychological distress increased the risk of problem gambling. Among women, engaging in both land-based and online gambling and alcohol-related problems were significantly associated with problem gambling. The findings further highlight the need to consider sex differences in preventive and treatment initiatives and policies targeting problem gambling. Online gambling seems to have stronger links with problem gambling, which motivates further research in the eventual harmfulness of this gambling form. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Background: Work-life balance is associated with many positive effects at multiple levels and demands increased research attention. In the international literature on work-life balance, the term "gendered life-course" has been used to describe the differences between men and women in work biographies. However, whether this term applies to the Nordic work context remains underexplored., Objective: This study examined Finnish men's and women's subjective experience of the association between work-life balance and the psychosocial work environment (work demands and social support at work) across the life course, devoting special attention to family life stages encompassing the care of (young) children., Methods: Data from the Quality of Work Life Survey 2018 were utilized to conduct binary logistic regression analyses (N = 3790). Separate analyses were conducted for men and women., Results: A significant association between family life stage and high work-life balance was found for women but not for men in the Finnish working life. Women in family life stages involving the care of young, dependent children reported the lowest odds of high work-life balance. For both men and women, a positive association between social support at work and high work-life balance was found, while a negative association was found between work demands and high work-life balance., Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of psychosocial factors in both the work and family settings for work-life balance. Further, the findings call for an expanded focus on gender equality, also including issues in unpaid work in addition to issues in paid work.

One fourth of colorectal cancer patients having curative surgery will relapse of which the majority will die. Lymph node (LN) metastasis is the single most important prognostic factor and a key factor when deciding on postoperative treatment. Presently, LN metastases are identified by histopathological examination, a subjective method analyzing only a small LN volume and giving no information on tumor aggressiveness. To better identify patients at risk of relapse we constructed a qRT-PCR test, ColoNode, that determines levels of CEACAM5, KLK6, SLC35D3, MUC2 and POSTN mRNAs. Combined these biomarkers estimate the tumor cell load and aggressiveness allocating patients to risk categories with low (0, -1), medium (1), high (2) and very high (3) risk of recurrence. Here we present result of a prospective, national multicenter study including 196 colon cancer patients from 8 hospitals. On average, 21 LNs/patient, totally 4698 LNs, were examined by both histopathology and ColoNode. At 3-year follow-up, 36 patients had died from colon cancer or lived with recurrence. ColoNode identified all patients that were identified by histopathology and in addition 9 patients who were undetected by histopathology. Thus, 25% of the patients who recurred were identified by ColoNode only. Multivariate Cox regression analysis proved ColoNode (1, 2, 3 vs 0, -1) as a highly significant risk factor with HR 4.24 [95% confidence interval, 1.42-12.69, P = .01], while pTN-stage (III vs I/II) lost its univariate significance. In conclusion, ColoNode surpassed histopathology by identifying a significantly larger number of patients with future relapse and will be a valuable tool for decisions on postoperative treatment., (© 2023 The Authors.
