ZusammenfassungHitze, Trockenheit, Starkregen – viele Menschen in Europa spüren bereits die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels. Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen und Prognosen zeigen, mit welchen konkreten Klimawandelfolgen auch in Europa in den kommenden Jahren zu rechnen sein wird. Trotz intensivem Klimaschutz werden bestimmte Folgen nicht mehr abwendbar sein. Daher muss das Thema Klimafolgenanpassung in den Fokus rücken. Hier setzt das von der EU im Programm Horizont 2020 geförderte Projekt TeRRIFICA an: Mithilfe einer interaktiven Beteiligungskarte, dem Crowd-Mapping-Tool, wird die Bevölkerung in das Sammeln relevanter Daten einbezogen und kann sich auch in weiteren co-kreativen Prozessen beteiligen. Die Markierungen in der interaktiven Karte sind Erfahrungen und Beobachtungen rund um die Folgen des Klimawandels und dienen als Grundlage, um zunächst auf lokaler Ebene passgenaue Maßnahmen zur Anpassung und weiterführende Aktionspläne zu entwickeln. Darauf aufbauend bilden die Markierungen auch die Grundlage für europaweite Empfehlungen und tragen so direkt zu einem verstärkten innovativem Klimahandeln auf europäischer Ebene bei.

Since the summer of 2020, researchers from ten projects pertaining to the Horizon2020 Science with and for Society (SwafS) call have been meeting virtually as the SwafS14 Monitoring and Evaluation ecosystem. Topics of discussion were the trials and tribulations of their regional Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) projects as well as their strategies for monitoring and evaluation. In this paper we make a first attempt at presenting these issues as problems of translation between different kinds of stakeholders. After an exploration of the diversity of stakeholders and the process of translation in regional RRI, we suggest evaluative conversations as a way of improving regional RRI. We intend to develop this idea in the future and that these conversations will facilitate more responsible and engaged monitoring and evaluation and contribute to better R&I policies.

Science Shops are structures that facilitate science-society collaborations by providing independent, participatory research support in response to concerns experienced by civil society. The current Research and Innovation (R&I) system is under increasing pressure to become more inclusive and responsive to current and future societal challenges. Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Open Science are policy imperatives to come to conceptual and practical ways to transform the R&I system in this direction. However, the widespread implementation of RRI approaches is not yet straightforward. This article focuses on how Science Shops can serve as models to translate RRI, participatory research and Open Science policies into practice. After three Delphi rounds and one expert panel with science shop practitioners, our approached evolved from a pure university-based model to a process-based framework of Science Shops work. Such a process-view is essential for scaling up Science Shops as platforms for piloting and diffusing best practices in RRI and Open Science. Through bridging different scientific and social knowledge, Science Shops can improve the effectiveness, quality, acceptance, impact and sustainability of solutions for complex societal problems and become RRI best-practices for approaches of co-creation, anticipation, reflection and deliberation in science with and for society.

Leading RRI researchers and practitioners, together with policymakers and stakeholder organisations, discussed the state- of-the-art and future perspectives for RRI at the ‘Pathways to Transformation’ conference in June 2019, an event which was extended beyond Brussels, for instance by ca. 330 original tweets and ca. 840 retweets from ca. 160 unique accounts. In the conference, many participants expressed their concern about an uncertain future for RRI in the EC. As a result, numerous large- scale EU-funded RRI projects signed a Joint Declaration, urging the European Commission to make RRI a key objective of the upcoming framework programme, Horizon Europe – a plea to both mainstream the approach across the programme and provide specific resources for strengthening the RRI knowledge base. As the Horizon Europe programme is being forged, it is timely to present the Declaration for a broader audience.

Society’s participation in developing research agendas, in the research process itself, and in the debate about its findings will be key factors when determining the success of the transformation process. In order to support it, cooperation between, and much closer integration of, a range of scientific disciplines and policy is essential. But next to institutionalized scientific advice for policy-makers, it needs research centers that are closely linked with civil society organizations, as the latter play an increasing role in empowerment of civil society.

Fast 100 Wissenschaftsladen wurden in den letzten drei Jahren allein in der chinesischen Grosstadt Shanghai gegrundet, die kanadische Regierung investierte in den Aufbau von Science-Shops Millionen. Ein Erfolgsmodell weltweit – das an Deutschland fast spurlos vorbei geht. Die Initialzundung fur die Science-Shop-Bewegung in China kam 2006 aus der niederlandischen Universitatsstadt Utrecht. Eine Woche lang informierten europaische Wissenschaftsladen-Mitarbeiter im Rahmen einer Summer School die Teilnehmer aus dem Fernen Osten, was Wissenschaftsladen sind, was sie leisten konnen und wie man sie aufbaut. Was sie erzahlten, fiel bei den chinesischen Gasten auf fruchtbaren Boden. In keinem anderen Land gibt es inzwischen so viele Wissenschaftsladen wie in China. Die Studierenden helfen mit ihrem Uni-Wissen, wo sie nur konnen: Wie etwa lasst sich Strom sparen, wie die Energieversorgung uberhaupt sicherstellen? Ist das Trinkwasser sauber? Wie investiert man sein weniges Geld sinnvoll? Wie kann man die Kinder besser schulen? Rund um die Uhr darf man bei Chinas Science-Shops anfragen. Wenn die Problemstellungen umfassender sind, arbeiten die Studierenden gemeinsam mit ihren Professoren eine Antwort aus.
