Search

Second-order processes in physics is a research topic focusing attention from several fields worldwide including, for example, non-linear quantum electrodynamics with high-power lasers, neutrinoless double-β decay, and stimulated atomic two-photon transitions. For the electromagnetic nuclear interaction, the observation of the competitive double-γ decay from 137mBa has opened up the nuclear structure field for detailed investigation of second-order processes through the manifestation of off-diagonal nuclear polarisability. Here, we confirm this observation with an 8.7σ significance, and an improved value on the double-photon versus single-photon branching ratio as 2.62 × 10−6(30). Our results, however, contradict the conclusions from the original experiment, where the decay was interpreted to be dominated by a quadrupole-quadrupole component. Here, we find a substantial enhancement in the energy distribution consistent with a dominating octupole-dipole character and a rather small quadrupole-quadrupole component in the decay, hindered due to an evolution of the internal nuclear structure. The implied strongly hindered double-photon branching in 137mBa opens up the possibility of the double-photon branching as a feasible tool for nuclear-structure studies on off-diagonal polarisability in nuclei where this hindrance is not present.

A novel, witness-sample-based technique for detection of isotope-specific material signatures excited by quasi-mono-energetic gamma sources is presented. Proof of principle demonstrations involving the detection, assay, and imaging of 7Li are reviewed.

The lifetimes of the 2 1 + and 4 1 + states of Po 208 were measured in the α -transfer reaction Pb 204 ( C 12 , Be 8 ) Po 208 by γ -ray spectroscopy utilizing the recoil distance Doppler shift method. The newly extracted transition strengths alongside ones of the decay of the 2 2 + state were compared to the results of large-scale shell-model calculations using an effective interaction derived from the realistic CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential. The comparison indicates the importance of the quadrupole isovector excitations in the valence shell for a fine tuning of the two-body matrix elements of the shell-model interaction.

The competitive double-$\ensuremath{\gamma}$ decay of the ${2}_{1}{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{+}$ state of an even-even spherical nucleus is studied for the first time. The coupling of one-, two-, and three-phonon terms in the wave functions of excited states is taken into account within the microscopic model based on the Skyrme energy density functional. The approach enables one to perform the calculations in very large configurational spaces. We estimate the generalized electric dipole polarizabilities involved in the $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}/\ensuremath{\gamma}$ decay process and make a prediction for the branching ratio of the competitive $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$-decay relative to its single $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-decay calculated to be $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}8}$ for the case of $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$.

The low-lying dipole strength of the deformed nucleus 156Gd was investigated in the energy region from 3.1 MeV to 6.2 MeV using the method of nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF). The NRF experiments were performed at the Darmstadt High Intensity Photon Setup (DHIPS) at Technische Universitat Darmstadt using unpolarized continuous-energy bremsstrahlung and at the High-Intensity γ-ray Source (HIγS) at Duke University using quasi-monoenergetic and linearly-polarized photon beams. The combination of both experiments allows to separate electric and magnetic contributions and to determine absolute transition strengths for individual excited states as well as averaged quantities over narrow excitation energy regions. The investigated energy regions cover the region of the scissors mode as well as the low-energy part of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance. This is the first experiment where both of these excitation modes as well as the region in between has been successfully studied in a deformed heavy nucleus using the NRF method.

In this work we present a comparison between the two liquid scintillators BC-501A and BC-537 in terms of their performance regarding the pulse-shape discrimination between neutrons and γ rays. Special emphasis is put on the application of artificial neural networks . The results show a systematically higher γ -ray rejection ratio for BC-501A compared to BC-537 applying the commonly used charge comparison method. Using the artificial neural network approach the discrimination quality was improved to more than 95% rejection efficiency of γ rays over the energy range 150 to 1000 keV for both BC-501A and BC-537. However, due to the larger light output of BC-501A compared to BC-537, neutrons could be identified in BC-501A using artificial neural networks down to a recoil proton energy of 800 keV compared to a recoil deuteron energy of 1200 keV for BC-537. We conclude that using artificial neural networks it is possible to obtain the same γ -ray rejection quality from both BC-501A and BC-537 for neutrons above a low-energy threshold. This threshold is, however, lower for BC-501A, which is important for nuclear structure spectroscopy experiments of rare reaction channels where low-energy interactions dominates.

Most theoretical approaches used in nuclear astrophysics to model the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements incorporate the so-called statistical model in order to describe the excitation and decay properties of atomic nuclei. One of the basic assumptions of this model is the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and the related concept of so-called photon strength functions to describe γ-ray transition probabilities. We present a novel experimental approach that allows for the first time to experimentally determine the photon strength function simultaneously in two independent ways by a unique combination of quasi-monochromatic photon beams and a newly implemented γ–γ coincidence setup. This technique does not assume a priori the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and sets a benchmark in terms of the detection sensitivity for measuring decay properties of photo-excited states below the neutron separation energy. The data for the spherical off-shell nucleus $^{128}$Te were obtained for γ-ray beam-energy settings between 3 MeV and 9 MeV in steps of 130 keV for the lower beam energies and in steps of up to 280 keV for the highest beam settings. We present a quantitative analysis on the consistency of the derived photon strength function with the Brink–Axel hypothesis. The data clearly demonstrate a discrepancy of up to a factor of two between the photon strength functions extracted from the photoabsorption and photon emission process, respectively. In addition, we observe that the photon strength functions are not independent of the excitation energy, as usually assumed. Thus, we conclude, that the Brink–Axel hypothesis is not strictly fulfilled in the excitation-energy region below the neutron separation threshold (Sn=8.78MeV) for the studied case of $^{128}$Te.

The $E2/M1$ multipole mixing ratio of the ${1}_{\text{sc}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}_{1}^{+}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transition and therefore the $F$-vector $E2$ decay of the scissors mode of the shape-phase transitional nucleus $^{152}\mathrm{Sm}$ have been measured with the nuclear resonance fluorescence method at the High-Intensity $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray Source ($\mathrm{HI}\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{S}$). Furthermore, parity quantum numbers of several dipole-excited states have been remeasured, making use of the polarized $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beam at $\mathrm{HI}\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{S}$, and partially reassigned. The new data enable an unambiguous determination of the proton and neutron effective boson quadrupole charges within the proton-neutron interacting boson model. With the well-constrained parameter set, a new mixed-symmetry state is predicted.

The low-lying dipole strength in the 90,94Zr nuclei was investigated via (p,p′γ) at 80 MeV and (α,α′γ) at 130 MeV. The experiments, made at RCNP, used the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden for the scattered particles and the array CAGRA with HPGe detectors for the γ-decay. For 94Zr these are the first data for both reactions and for 90Zr these are the first data with (p,p′γ) and the first ones at high resolution for (α,α′γ). The comparison of the present results for the two nuclei with existing (γ,γ′) data shows that both nuclear probes produce an excitation pattern different than that of the electromagnetic probes. DWBA calculations were made using form factors deduced from transition densities, based on RPA calculations, characterized by a strong neutron component at the nuclear surface. A combined analysis of the two reactions was performed for the first time to investigate the isoscalar character of the 1− states in 90,94Zr. The (p,p′γ) cross section was calculated using values for the isoscalar electric dipole energy-weighted sum rule (E1 ISEWSR) obtained from the (α,α′γ) data. The isoscalar strength for 90Zr was found to exhaust 20 ± 2.5% of the EWSR in the energy range up to 12 MeV. In case of 94Zr, a strength of 9 ± 1.1% of the EWSR was found in the range up to 8.5 MeV. Although an overall general description was obtained in the studied energy intervals, not all proton cross sections were well reproduced using the isoscalar strength from (α,α′γ). This might suggest mixing of isoscalar and isovector components and that this mixing and the degree of collectivity are not the same for all the 1− states below the particle binding energy.

Background: Numerous studies of the ground-state decay of the pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) have been carried out in the past. However, data on the decay of the PDR to low-lying excited states is still very scarce due to limitations of the sensitivity to weak branching transitions of experimental setups.Purpose: We present a detailed examination of the low-energy dipole response of $^{128}\mathrm{Te}$ and $^{130}\mathrm{Te}$ below their neutron separation thresholds of 8.8 and 8.5 MeV, respectively.Methods: Photonuclear reactions with the subsequent $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy of the decay channel with continuous-energy bremsstrahlung at varying endpoint energies and linearly polarized quasimonochromatic $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beams with energies ranging from 2.7 to 8.9 MeV in steps of roughly 250 keV were used for probing the decay behavior of the low-energy dipole response in $^{128}\mathrm{Te}$ and $^{130}\mathrm{Te}$. In addition, $(\stackrel{P\vec}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}})$ reactions were used to study the population of low-lying states of $^{128}\mathrm{Te}$.Results: Spin-parity quantum numbers and reduced transition probabilities are determined for individual photo-excited states. The analysis of average decay properties for nuclear levels in narrow excitation-energy bins enable the extraction of photoabsorption cross sections, average branching ratios to the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ state, and the distinction between $E1$ and $M1$ transitions to the ground state and to the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ state accounting for resolved and unresolved transitions.Conclusions: Above 5 MeV, the experimental data are in reasonable agreement to calculations within the quasiparticle phonon model. The major fraction of the ground-state decay channel is due to $E1$ transitions, while less than $5--10$% stem from $M1$ transitions. Furthermore, first direct experimental evidence is provided that the population of the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ state of $^{128}\mathrm{Te}$ via primary $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions from excited states in the PDR region from 5 to 9 MeV is dominated by $E1$ transitions of ${1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states.

A direct measurement of the decay width of the excited ${0}_{1}^{+}$ state of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ using the relative self-absorption technique is reported. Our value of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma},{0}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1}_{1}^{+}}=8.17(14{)}_{\mathrm{stat}.}(11{)}_{\mathrm{syst}.}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ provides sufficiently low experimental uncertainties to test modern theories of nuclear forces. The corresponding transition rate is compared to the results of ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory that take into account contributions to the magnetic dipole operator beyond leading order. This enables a precision test of the impact of two-body currents that enter at next-to-leading order.

Background: Inelastic proton scattering at energies of a few hundred MeV and very-forward angles including $0^\circ$ has been established as a tool to study electric-dipole strength distributions in nuclei. The present work reports a systematic investigation of the chain of stable even-mass Nd isotopes representing a transition from spherical to quadrupole-deformed nuclei. Purpose: Extraction of the equivalent photo-absorption cross sections and analysis of their fine structure in the energy region of the IsoVector Giant Dipole Resonance (IVGDR). Method: Proton inelastic scattering reactions of 200 MeV protons were measured at iThemba LABS in Cape Town, South Africa. The scattering products were momentum-analysed by the K600 magnetic spectrometer positioned at $\theta_{\mathrm{Lab}}=0^\circ$. Using dispersion-matching techniques, energy resolutions of $\Delta E \approx 40 - 50$ keV were obtained. After subtraction of background and contributions from other multipoles, the spectra were converted to photo-absorption cross sections using the equivalent virtual-photon method. Results: Wavelet-analysis techniques are used to extract characteristic energy scales of the fine structure of the IVGDR from the experimental data. Comparisons with the Quasiparticle-Phonon Model (QPM) and Skyrme Separable Random Phase Approximation (SSRPA) predictions provide insight into the role of different giant resonance damping mechanisms. Conclusions: Fine structure is observed even for the most deformed nuclei studied. Fragmentation of the one particle-one hole ($1p1h$) strength seems to be the main source of fine structure in both spherical and deformed nuclei. Some impact of the spreading due to coupling of the two particle-two hole ($2p2h$) states to the $1p1h$ doorway states is seen in the spherical/transitional nuclei, where calculations beyond the $1p1h$ level are available.

We present the results from an experiment dedicated to measure the lifetime of the $$2^+_2$$ state, candidate for the one-phonon mixed-symmetry state, of $$^{208}$$ Po. This nucleus was studied in the $$\alpha $$ -transfer reaction $$^{204}$$ Pb( $$^{12}$$ C, $$^{8}$$ Be) $$^{208}$$ Po and the lifetime of the $$2^+_2$$ state was determined by utilizing the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The experimental data show that the $$2^+_2$$ state decays with a sizable M1 transition to the $$2^+_1$$ state revealing its isovector nature.

Background: There is renewed interest in electric dipole strength distributions for a variety of reasons including the extraction of the dipole polarizability related to properties of the symmetry energy and a measure for the neutron skin thickness, understanding the structure of low-energy E1 strength in nuclei with neutron excess, and establishing the systematics of the isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR). Inelastic proton scattering at energies of a few hundred MeV and very forward angles including 0∘ has been established as a tool for the study of electric and magnetic dipole strength distributions in nuclei. Purpose: The present work aims at a systematic investigation of the electric and magnetic dipole strength distributions in the chain of stable even-mass tin isotopes. Methods: Inelastic proton scattering experiments were performed at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka, with a 295-MeV beam covering laboratory angles 0∘–6∘ and excitation energies 6–22 MeV. Cross sections due to E1 and M1 excitations were extracted with a multipole decomposition analysis (MDA) and then converted to reduced transition probabilities with the “virtual photon method” for E1 and the “unit cross section method” for M1 excitations, respectively. Including a theory-aided correction for the high-excitation-energy region not covered experimentally, the electric dipole polarizability was determined from the E1 strength distributions. Results: Total photoabsorption cross sections derived from the E1 and M1 strength distributions show significant differences compared to those from previous (γ,xn) experiments in the energy region of the IVGDR. The widths of the IVGDR deduced from the present data with a Lorentz parametrization show an approximately constant value of about 4.5 MeV in contrast to the large variations between isotopes observed in previous work. The IVGDR centroid energies are in good correspondence to expectations from empirical systematics of their mass dependence. Furthermore, a study of the dependence of the IVGDR energies on bulk matter properties is presented. The E1 strengths below neutron threshold show fair agreement with results from (γ,γ′) experiments on Sn112,116,120,124 in the energy region between 6 and 7 MeV, where also isoscalar E1 strength was found for Sn124. At higher excitation energies, large differences are observed, pointing to a different nature of the excited states with small ground-state branching ratios. The isovector spin-M1 strengths exhibit a broad distribution between 6 and 12 MeV in all studied nuclei. Conclusions: The present results contribute to the solution of a variety of nuclear structure problems including the systematics of the energy and width of the IVGDR, the structure of low-energy E1 strength in nuclei, new constraints to energy density functionals (EDFs) aiming at a systematic description of the dipole polarizability across the nuclear chart, from which properties of the symmetry energy can be derived, and the systematics of the isovector spin-M1 strength in heavy nuclei.

A Geant4 simulation has been carried out in order to determine the B-detection efficiency of a rare isotope beam implantation setup, for decay spectroscopy experiments, comprising a number of Double Sided Silicon Strip Detectors (DSSSDs) and two plastic scintillation detectors placed upstream and downstream. The absolute efficiency for the emitted B-particle detection from radioactive fragments implanted in the DSSSDs using fast-timing plastic-scintillator detector, is calculated. The detection efficiency of the setup has been studied with two different distances between the Si layers and plastics. The requirement for the thickness of the Si detector layers and its implication on the B-detection effciency has been investigated for 1 mm and 300 um thickness of Si layers. The combined efficiency of DSSSD and plastic detectors were also simulated for two different thicknesses of the DSSSD.

Background: Little data is available for the pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) in axially deformed nuclei. Photon-scattering experiments are complicated by high level densities in the PDR region and the small energy difference of transitions to the ground state and to excited states.Purpose: We report on an experimental study of the low-energy dipole strength distribution of the well-deformed nucleus $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ between 4.0--7.7 MeV.Methods: The low-lying photoresponse of $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ has been investigated using the method of nuclear resonance fluorescence using a quasimonochromatic linearly polarized $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beam in the energy range of 4.0--7.7 MeV in steps of 0.2 MeV.Results: For excitation energies between 4 MeV and 5 MeV, sufficiently low level densities allow for the identification of individual states, including level energies, reduced transition widths and branching ratios. Energy-averaged mean decay branching ratios, mean population ratios and partial absorption cross sections were determined above 5 MeV up to the neutron-separation threshold at 7.7 MeV. A Lorentzian-shaped enhancement of the partial photo absorption cross section followed by decays back to the ground-state band is found at 6.10(5) MeV with a width of 0.77(23) MeV. A comparison with results from complementary measurements is performed using the framework of the statistical model.Conclusions: The experimental results for the mean population ratios deviate systematically from the statistical model simulation by 30(6)%. However, they are in agreement within one standard deviation of the simulation.

Background: Several collective low-lying states are observed in $^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$ whose properties, which include excitation energies and $E2, E0$, and $M1$ transition probabilities, indicate that some of them belong to the spherical state and the other to deformed states. A consideration of these data in the full framework of the geometrical collective Model with both intrinsic shape variables, $\ensuremath{\beta}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$, and rotational degrees of freedom is necessary for $^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$.Purpose: We investigate the properties of the low-lying collective states of $^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$ based on the five-dimensional geometrical collective model including triaxiality as an active degree of freedom.Method: The quadrupole-collective Bohr Hamiltonian, depending on both $\ensuremath{\beta}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ shape variables with a potential having spherical and deformed minima, is applied. The relative depth of two minima, height and width of the barrier, and rigidity of the potential near both minima are determined so as to achieve a satisfactory description of the observed properties of the low-lying collective quadrupole states of $^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$.Results: It is shown that the low-energy structure of $^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$ can be described in a satisfactory way within the geometrical collective model with a potential function supporting shape coexistence without other restrictions on its shape. It is shown that a correct determination of the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ dependence of the collective potential from the experimental data requires a consideration in the framework of the full Bohr collective Hamiltonian. It is shown also that the excitation energy of the ${2}_{2}^{+}$ state can be reproduced only if the rotation inertia coefficient is taken to be four times smaller than the vibrational one in the region of the deformed well. It is shown also that shell effects are important for the description of the $B(M1;{2}_{2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}_{1}^{+})$ and $B(M1;{3}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}_{1}^{+})$ transition probabilities. An indication of the influence of the pairing vibrational mode on the ${0}_{2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{0}_{1}^{+}$ transition is confirmed, in agreement with the previous result.Conclusion: Qualitative agreement with the experimental data on the excitation energies and $B(E2)$ and $B(M1;{2}_{2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}_{1}^{+})$ reduced transition probabilities is obtained.

The size of a $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}K=0$ $M1$ excitation strength has been determined for the first time in a predominantly axially deformed even-even nucleus. It has been obtained from the observation of a rare $K$-mixing situation between two close-lying ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={1}^{+}$ states of the nucleus $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ with components characterized by intrinsic projection quantum numbers $K=0$ and $K=1$. Nuclear resonance fluorescence induced by quasimonochromatic linearly polarized $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beams provided evidence for $K$ mixing of the ${1}^{+}$ states at 3159.1(3) and 3173.6(3) keV in excitation energy from their $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-decay branching ratios into the ground-state band. The $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}K=0$ transition strength of $B(M1;{0}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1}_{K=0}^{+})=0.008(1){\ensuremath{\mu}}_{N}^{2}$ was inferred from a mixing analysis of their $M1$ transition rates into the ground-state band. It is in agreement with predictions from the quasiparticle phonon nuclear model. This determination represents first experimental information on the $M1$ excitation strength of a nuclear quantum state with a negative $\mathcal{R}$-symmetry quantum number.

The form factor of the electromagnetic excitation of $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ to its ${2}_{1}^{+}$ state was measured at extremely low momentum transfers in an electron-scattering experiment at the Superconducting Darmstadt Electron Linear Accelerator (S-DALINAC). A combined analysis with the world form-factor data results in a reduced transition strength $B(E2;{2}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{0}_{1}^{+})=7.63(19)\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{e}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{fm}}^{4}$ with an accuracy improved to 2.5%. In-medium no-core shell-model results with interactions derived from chiral effective field theory are able to reproduce the result. A quadrupole moment $Q({2}_{1}^{+})=5.97(30)\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}e\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{fm}}^{2}$ can be extracted from the strict correlation with the $B(E2)$ strength emerging in the calculations.

Here we present new information on the shape evolution of the very neutron-rich ^{92,94}Se nuclei from an isomer-decay spectroscopy experiment at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. High-resolution germanium detectors were used to identify delayed γ rays emitted following the decay of their isomers. New transitions are reported extending the previously known level schemes. The isomeric levels are interpreted as originating from high-K quasineutron states with an oblate deformation of β∼0.25, with the high-K state in ^{94}Se being metastable and K hindered. Following this, ^{94}Se is the lowest-mass neutron-rich nucleus known to date with such a substantial K hindrance. Furthermore, it is the first observation of an oblate K isomer in a deformed nucleus. This opens up the possibility for a new region of K isomers at low Z and at oblate deformation, involving the same neutron orbitals as the prolate orbitals within the classic Z∼72 deformed hafnium region. From an interpretation of the level scheme guided by theoretical calculations, an oblate deformation is also suggested for the ^{94}Se_{60} ground-state band.

The superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator (S-DALINAC) has been operated as an energy recovery linac (ERL) for the first time. The S-DALINAC is a recirculating superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerator and had been upgraded with an additional recirculation beamline. It features a path length adjustment system that provides a freedom of choice of 360\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} for the rf phase difference between the electron bunches recirculated through the new beamline and the phase of the accelerating ${\mathrm{TM}}_{010}$ mode of the oscillating electromagnetic field in the SRF cavities of the accelerator. A choice of around 180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} for this phase difference results in a deceleration of the recirculated beam and a corresponding transfer of the particles' kinetic energy back to the energy of the electromagnetic field in the cavities. The main components relevant for ERL operation are described and data of the first operation as an SRF-ERL are presented.

Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus 148Ce have been populated by neutron-induced fission of 235U and 241Pu samples. Their electromagnetic decays were studied by means of γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy with fast-timing capabilities. Lifetimes of the 2+1 and 4+1 states of 148Ce were obtained and their E2 decay rates deduced. The B4=2 = B(E2; 4+1 → 2+1)=B(E2; 2+1 → 0+1) ratio indicates that 148Ce is a transitional nucleus while the N = 88/90 shape phase transition evolves into a gradual change of nuclear deformation for proton numbers Z < 60.

A projectile Coulomb-excitation experiment was performed at the radioactive ion beam facility HIE-ISOLDE at CERN. The radioactive 140Nd and 142Sm ions were post accelerated to the energy of 4.62 MeV/A and impinged on a 1.45 mg/cm2-thin 208Pb target. The γ rays depopulating the Coulomb-excited states were recorded by the HPGe-array MINIBALL. The scattered charged particles were detected by a double-sided silicon strip detector in forward direction. Experimental γ-ray intensities were used for the determination of electromagnetic transition matrix elements. Preliminary results for the reduced transition strength of the B ( M 1 ; 2 3 + → 2 1 + ) = 0.35 ( 19 ) μ N 2 of 140Nd and a first estimation for 142Sm have been deduced using the Coulomb-excitation calculation software GOSIA. The 2 3 + states of 140Nd and 142Sm show indications of being the main fragment of the proton-neutron mixed-symmetry 2 1 , ms + state.

AGATA Collaboration, New physics opportunities are opening up by the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array, AGATA, as it evolves to the full 4π instrument. AGATA is a high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer, solely built from highly segmented high-purity Ge detectors, capable of measuring γ rays from a few tens of keV to beyond 10 MeV, with unprecedented efficiency, excellent position resolution for individual γ-ray interactions, and very high count-rate capability. 6 pags., 4 figs., The γ-ray emission from the nuclei Fe following Coulomb excitation at bombarding energy of 400-440 AMeV was measured with special focus on E1 transitions in the energy region 4-8 MeV. The unstable neutron-rich nuclei Fe were produced at the FAIR-GSI laboratories and selected with the FRS spectrometer. The γ decay was detected with AGATA. From the measured γ-ray spectra the summed E1 strength is extracted and compared to microscopic quasi-particle phonon model calculations. International audience; A first performance test of the Coulomb excitation multipolarimetry (Coulex-multipolarimetry) method is presented. It is based on a $^{85}\hbox {Br}\,\pi p_{3/2}\rightarrow \pi p_{1/2}$ spin-flip experiment performed as part of the PreSPEC-AGATA campaign at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI). Via determination of background levels around the expected $^{85}\hbox {Br}$ excitations as well as measured $^{197}\hbox {Au}$ excitations, an upper limit for the M1 transition strength of the $1/2_1^-\rightarrow 3/2_\text {g.s.}^-$ transition in $^{85}\hbox {Br}$ and a lower beam time limit for upcoming experimental campaigns utilizing Coulex-multipolarimetry have been inferred. The impact of the use of AGATA in its anticipated $1\pi $ configuration on these estimates is deduced via Geant4 simulations.

International audience; A first approach to a novel, self-calibrating γ -ray tracking algorithm based on experimental data and non-Gaussian behavior of geometrical scattering angles for the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is presented. A brief performance test using a 137 Cs source run measured with AGATA at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL), France is performed. The achievable tracking performance of the novel method is compared to the Orsay Forward Tracking algorithm.

The dipole polarizability of stable even-mass tin isotopes 112,114,116,118,120,124 was extracted from inelastic proton scattering experiments at 295 MeV under very forward angles performed at RCNP. Predictions from energy density functionals cannot account for the present data and the polarizability of 208Pb simultaneously. The evolution of the polarizabilities in neighboring isotopes indicates a kink at 120Sn while all model results show a nearly linear increase with mass number after inclusion of pairing corrections., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Nuclear reactions induced by photons play a vital role for very different aspects of basic research and applications in physics. They are a key ingredient for the synthesis of nuclei in the Universe and provide, due to the selectivity and the model-independence of the reaction mechanism, an extremely valuable probe for researchers. The penetrability of photons in the MeV energy range makes them, in addition, an ideal tool for meeting various societal challenges. The last two decades saw a rapid development of advanced photon sources and detection methods for photonuclear reaction products. Bremsstrahlung and quasi-monoenergetic photon beams with unprecedented intensity and quality combined with state-of-the-art detector technology paved the way for new scientific discoveries and technological applications. This review focuses on a comprehensive overview of the most important developments since the turn of the millennium restricted to the energy range between atomic and hadronic degrees of freedom. This includes a description of the formalism of photonuclear reactions below and above the particle-separation threshold. The most important techniques used to generate photon beams in the MeV energy range are presented along with selected facilities and instrumentation for diagnostics and for the analysis of photonuclear reactions. The power of photons to probe the atomic nucleus is exemplified in a number of selected examples from fundamental and applied science. New developments, facilities, and ideas promise a vivid future for photonuclear physics.

We demonstrate the possibility to directly detect microgram amounts of the isotope 7 L i using a quasi-monochromatic high-energy photon beam. The isotope selective detection is based on a witness scatterer absorbing and re-emitting photons via nuclear resonance fluorescence. This enables the detection of isotopes with microgram accuracy at long distances from the actual sample. Further, we demonstrate that the technique can deliver quantitative information without specific knowledge of the photon flux and no spectral capabilities or knowledge of the resonance fluorescence cross section. Detection of low-atomic-weight isotopes screened by heavy shielding is also shown. The techniques described are applicable to all next-generation, ultrahigh brilliance, laser-Compton light sources currently under construction.

Probing the structure of an atomic nucleus by the electromagnetic interaction can be the cleanest and most direct way to obtain information on how the constituting nucleons are organizing themselves within the nucleus. Precise characterization of photonuclear reactions has contributed significantly to the establishment of modern nuclear physics. A brief overview on the Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence method, its applications and potential future opportunities will be given. In particular, we address recent studies of the dipole strength distributions of 76Se and 40Ar, of the determination of the Photon Strength Function of 128Te, and dare an outlook to even more sensitive measurements in the future.

The performance of the novel HPGe-Cluster array DEGAS to be used at FAIR has been studied through GEANT4 simulations using accurate geometries of most of the detector components. The simulation framework has been tested by comparing experimental data of various detector setups. The study showed that the DEGAS system could provide a clear improvement of the photo-peak efficiency compared to the previous RISING array. In addition, the active BGO Back-catcher could greatly enhance the background suppression capability. The add-back analysis revealed that even at a γ multiplicity of six the sensitivity is improved by adding back the energy depositions of the neighboring Ge crystals.

Proton inelastic scattering experiments at energy E_p = 200 MeV and a spectrometer scattering angle of 0 degree were performed on 144,146,148,150Nd and 152Sm exciting the IsoVector Giant Dipole Resonance (IVGDR). Comparison with results from photo-absorption experiments reveals a shift of resonance maxima towards higher energies for vibrational and transitional nuclei. The extracted photo-absorption cross sections in the most deformed nuclei, 150Nd and 152Sm, exhibit a pronounced asymmetry rather than a distinct double-hump structure expected as a signature of K-splitting. This behaviour can be related to the proximity of these nuclei to the critical point of the phase shape transition from vibrators to rotors with a soft quadrupole deformation potential. Self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) calculations using the SLy6 Skyrme force provide a relevant description of the IVGDR shapes deduced from the present data, Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

International audience; The nature of the high-lying final levels of the 96Ygsβ decay, one of the three most important contributors to the high-energy reactor antineutrino spectrum, has been investigated in high-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy following the β decay as well as in a campaign of inelastic photon scattering experiments. The comprehensive approach establishes 1− levels associated with the Pygmy Dipole Resonance as high-lying final levels in the β decay. Branching ratios extracted from β decay complement photon scattering and allow the absolute E1 excitation strength to be determined for levels populated in both reactions. The combined data represents a comprehensive approach to the wavefunction of the 1− levels below the Qβ value, which are investigated in the Quasiparticle Phonon Model. The calculations reveal that the components populated in β decay contribute only with small amplitudes to the complex wavefunction of these 1− levels. A comparison of the β decay results to data from total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy demonstrates a good agreement between both measurements.

When injecting charged particles into a radio frequency (RF) field at a phase, where the particles are decelerated instead of accelerated, the particles return energy to the RF field. This effect is called energy recovery. The beam-energy recovery efficiency is determined by the measurement of RF forward and reverse powers. At the S-DALINAC, no RF power detection system was available to permanently measure all cavities simultaneously for a full energy recovery characterization. In this paper, the new RF power measurement setup is described regarding design and characterization of this system. With an energy gain measurement, an additional application of the system is presented, which was done for the first time for 20-cell cavities using an RF power measurement.

One-phonon states of vibrational nuclei with mixed proton–neutron symmetry have been observed throughout the nuclear chart besides the mass A ≈ 200 region. Very recently, it has been proposed that the 2 2 + state of 212Po is of isovector nature. This nucleus has two valence protons and two valence neutrons outside the doubly-magic 208Pb nucleus. The stable isotope 204Hg, featuring two valence-proton and valence-neutron holes, with respect to 208Pb, is the particle-hole mirror of 212Po. In order to compare the properties of low-lying isovector excitations in these particle-hole mirror nuclei, we have studied 204Hg by using the projectile Coulomb-excitation technique. The measured absolute B ( M 1 ; 2 2 + → 2 1 + ) strength of 0.20 ( 2 ) μ N 2 indicates that the 2 2 + level of 204Hg is at least the main fragment of the 2 1 , m s + state. For the first time in this mass region, both lowest-lying, one-quadrupole phonon excitations are established together with the complete set of their decay strengths. This allows for a microscopic description of their structures, achieved in the framework of the Quasi-particle Phonon Model.

We present a novel method for the analysis of Doppler-broadened γ -ray lineshapes observed by position-sensitive detector systems with the purpose to determine nuclear level lifetimes. This advance of the well-known Doppler-Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM) is specifically tailored to experiments employing γ -ray tracking detectors and takes advantage of the position resolution of these detector systems. The novel continuous-angle Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (caDSAM) is implemented in the comprehensive computer program APCAD for the calculation of Doppler-broadened γ -ray lineshapes, their fit to experimental data and extraction of level lifetimes. Extensions of the method qualifying it for measurements with radioactive and relativistic ion beams as well as for the measurement of “long” level lifetimes of the order of ∼ 200 ps are presented. Double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSSD) are commonly used for event-by-event identification of charged particles as well as the reconstruction of particle trajectories in nuclear physics experiments with stable and radioactive beams. Intersecting areas of both p- and n-doped front- and back-side segments form individual virtual pixel segments allowing for a high detector granularity. DSSSDs are employed in demanding experimental environments and have to withstand high count rates of impinging nuclei. The illumination of the detector is often not homogeneous. Consequently, radiation damage of the detector is distributed non-uniformly. Position-dependent incomplete charge collection due to radiation damage limits the performance and lifetime of the detectors, the response of different channels may vary drastically. Position-resolved charge-collection losses between front- and back-side segments are investigated in an in-beam experiment and by performing radioactive source measurements. A novel position-resolved calibration method based on mutual consistency of p-side and n-side charges yields a significant enhancement of the energy resolution and the performance of radiation-damaged parts of the detector.

The excitation of atomic nuclei via magnetic dipole transitions is closely related to the inelastic neutral-current neutrino-nucleus (NC-$\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{A}$) scattering process due to the similarity of the transition operators. NC-$\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{A}$-scattering serves for the detection of supernova neutrinos and poses a significant source of background in modern liquid-argon based high-energy neutrino detection experiments. To enable tests of the reliability of predictions for neutrino-nucleus scattering, the magnetic dipole response of $^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ below 7.7 MeV was characterized in a nuclear resonance fluorescence experiment using quasimonoenergetic $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beams. The linear polarization of the beams allowed for assignments of electric or magnetic character to previously known dipole excitations. A total magnetic dipole strength of $0.{36}_{\ensuremath{-}0.05}^{+0.04}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{N}^{2}$ was identified in the energy range of the present experiment. Combined with data from previous measurements, the full magnetic dipole strength of $^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ below the neutron separation threshold was investigated. Due to the low background in the energy range within the bandwidth of the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beams, the previous sensitivity limit was improved. A large-scale nuclear shell model calculation in the $sd\text{\ensuremath{-}}fp$ space satisfactorily agrees with the data in terms of excitation energies and strengths of the observed ${1}^{+}$ states.

A systematic study was performed of microsecond γ-decaying isomers around Sn100 produced in a fragmentation reaction of a Xe124 beam at 345 MeV/u at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center in Saitama, Japan. Half-lives of isomeric states in that region were remeasured allowing us to improve the currently available experimental information. Reduced transition probabilities were deduced and compared to shell-model calculations in various model spaces. The recently reported low-energy transitions in Rh92 and Ag96 were remeasured with improved precision. Additionally, experimental information on isomeric ratios, including five new ones, were extracted and compared to a previous experimental study and the sharp cutoff model of fragmentation reaction.

Background: The low-lying electric dipole strength provides insights into the parameters of the nuclear equation of state via its connection with the pygmy dipole resonance and nuclear neutron skin thickness.Purpose: The aim was to complement the systematic of the pygmy dipole resonance and first study its behavior across the $N=28$ neutron shell closure.Methods: Photon-scattering cross sections of states of $^{50,54}\mathrm{Cr}$ were measured up to an excitation energy of 9.7 MeV via the nuclear resonance fluorescence method using $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beams from bremsstrahlung and Compton backscattering.Results: Transitions strengths, spin and parity quantum number, and average branching ratios for 55 excited states, 44 of which were observed for the first time, were determined. The comparison between the total observed strengths of the isotopes $^{50,52,54}\mathrm{Cr}$ shows a significant increase above the shell closure.Conclusions: The evolution of the pygmy dipole resonance is heavily influenced by the shell structure.

A lifetime measurement of the 19/2 state in Pb has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a Pb beam impinging on a Mo enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt γ rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. The measured large reduced transition probability B(E3,19/2→13/2)=40(8) W.u. is the first indication of the octupole phonon at high spin in Pb. An analysis in terms of a particle-octupole-vibration coupling model indicates that the measured B(E3) value in Pb is compatible with the contributions from single-phonon and single particle E3 as well as E3 strength arising from the double-octupole-phonon 6 state, all adding coherently. A crucial aspect of the coupling model, namely the strong mixing between single-hole and the phonon-hole states, is confirmed in a realistic shell-model calculation.
