1. Forensic Analysis of Gel Pen Inks using Hyperspectral Imaging coupled with Chemometric Procedures

Abstract

Abstract Forensic examination of inks on questioned documents has become an important practice and the law enforcement agencies rely heavily on these techniques during criminal investigations. Although nowadays there are a variety of methodologies focused on the analysis of inks, the combination of non-destructive nature of Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) coupled with the multivariate chemometric technique has received little attention. In this study, forty-five (n = 45) gel pen inks of three different colours i.e. blue, red and black of five different brands were analysed using HSI with the idea of classifying them according to the brand. In terms of discriminating similar coloured components between samples, this was achievable only on the basis of the % reflectance spectra. However, arguably, there was sufficient evidence to suggest that it may be possible to discriminate the samples using chemometric of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). A 2-D score plot from PCA analysis was enough to characterise the samples into five clusters. The synergy of complementary information provided by PCA narrows matching possibilities (in terms of classification) for forensic investigations involving ink analysis.

Abstract

A road is a medium that a person uses to move from one destination to another. A good road can provide comfort and safety to users, however, poor maintenance of a road might cause danger to them. Therefore, a road maintenance management system needs to be carried out to ensure the effectiveness as well as the efficiency of road maintenance itself. In this era, there are so many systems created in order to help data storage and analysis. One of the systems is the Geographic Information System (GIS). Other than getting the location of distresses, GIS also can help to classify the severity level of distresses and to correlate the distresses occurring in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) with the slope gradient. Road distress data was collected using GPS applications supported by Supersurv 3 software. The study shows that the GIS method helps to produce a good spatial database. The road gradient factor is related to the level of road damage.

Abstract

Aerial reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS), is an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) mounted by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), represent a promising candidate for assisting device to device (D2D) millimeter wave (mmWave) communication in temporal and urgent situations, e.g., open-air events. IRS can efficiently mitigate the high blockage impact on mmWave propagation signal in base station to device use case. But, the scenario of D2D communication is different as both the transmitter (TX) to ARIS and the ARIS to receiver (RX) links are highly susceptible to be blocked due to the low height of the TX and RX. Consequently, in this paper, the impact of human bodies blockage on ARIS aided D2D mmWave communication is studied. Firstly, we assure the effectiveness of using ARIS in this network to significantly enhance its performance, then, the effect of ARIS height on the blockage occurrence and system performance is investigated to find out the optimum height. Our results proves that ARIS highly mitigates the blockage, reduces it by 85%, comparable to the case without it. Moreover, a high increase in system spectral efficiency, 1.2 bps/Hz, can be guaranteed, if ARIS is configured at optimum height.

Abstract

Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has immensely been deployed to overcome blockage issue and widen coverage for enabling superior performance 6G networks. Mainly, systems use RIS as an assistant to redirect the transmitter (TX) incident signal towards the receiver (RX) by configuring RIS elements amplitudes and phase shifts in a passive beamforming (PBF) process. Channel estimation (CE) based PBF schemes achieve optimal performance, but they need high overhead and time consumption, especially with high number of RIS elements. Codebook (CB) based PBF solutions can be alternatives to overcome these issues by only searching through a limited reflection patterns (RPs) and determining the optimal one based on a predefined metric. However, they consume high power and time relevant to the used CB size. In this work, we propose a direction based PBF (D-PBF) scheme, where we aim to map between the RXs directions and the codebook RPs and store this information in an updated database (DB). Hence, if the matching between a coming RX and a particular RP exists, the proposed scheme will directly select this RP to configure the RIS elements, otherwise, it memorizes this codeword for future searching. Finally, if the matching failed, searching through the memorized RPs will be done to find the optimal one, then updating the DB accordingly. After a time period, which depends on the CB size, the DB will converge, and the D-PBF scheme will need no searching to select the optimal RP. Hence, the proposed scheme needs extremely lower overhead, power, and time comparable to the CE and conventional CB based solutions, while obtaining acceptable performance in terms of effective rate.

9. Professional Development and EFL Teachers' Practices in Activating Learners' Acquisition of 21st Century Skills

Abstract

Teachers who teach English as a foreign language (EFL) should constantly develop their skills and knowledge by taking part in professional development programs (PDPs) which keep them aware of the most recent teaching trends. This mixed method study seeks to explore how PDPs influence EFL teachers' teaching practices in activating 21st century skills, and therefore their students' acquisition of these skills. It also examines the correlation between EFL teachers' activation of 21st century skills and their students' acquisition of these skills. The study used a sequential explanatory research design by utilizing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that the two dimensions of 21st century skills that got the highest level of activation were the collaboration and communication skills. Furthermore, the results showed that the students acquire all 21st century skills with different levels of acquisition. Finally, the results showed that EFL teachers' activation of 21st century skills had no significant direct correlation with students' acquisition of these skills. These findings could provide insights on the area of PDPs that need to be researched more in different contexts. They also suggested that PDPs designers should incorporate all dimensions of 21st equally to be activated accurately by teachers in higher education institutions.

10. Joint Proportional Fairness Scheduling Using Iterative Search for mmWave Concurrent Transmission

Abstract

Millimeter wave (mmWave) will play a significant role as a 5G candidate in facing the growing demand of enormous data rate in the near future. The conventional mmWave standard, IEEE 802.11ad, considers establishing only one mmWave link in wireless local area network (WLAN) to provide multi Gbps data rate. But, mmWave has a tenuous channel which hinders it from providing such rate. Hence, it's necessary to establish multiple mmWave links simultaneously by deploying a multiple number of mmWave access points (APs) in 5G networks. Unfortunately, applying conventional standard without any modifications for mmWave concurrent transmission impedes mmWave APs from selecting optimum mmWave concurrent links. Because IEEE 802.11ad standard associates the user equipment (UEs) to mmWave APs using the link that has the maximum received power without considering mutual interference between simultaneous links. In this paper, a joint proportional fairness scheduling (JPFS) optimization problem for establishing optimum mmWave concurrent transmission links is formulated. And, to find a solution to this non-polynomial (NP) time problem, we use exhaustive search (ES) scheme. 18. Consistency of two different approaches to determine the strength of a pairing residual interaction in the rare-earth region

Abstract

Two fits of the pairing residual interaction in the rare-earth region are independently performed. One is made on the odd-even staggering of masses by comparing measured and explicitly calculated three-point binding-energy differences centered on odd-even nuclei. Another deals with the moments of inertia of the first 2+ states of well deformed even-even nuclei upon comparing experimental data with the results of Inglis-Belyaev moments (supplemented by a crude estimate of the so-called Thouless-Valatin corrections). The sample includes 24 even-even and 31 odd-mass nuclei selected according to two criteria: they should have good rotor properties and should not correspond to low pairing-correlation regimes in their ground states. Calculations are performed in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus BCS framework (implementing a self-consistent blocking in the case of odd-mass nuclei). The Skyrme SIII parametrization is used in the particle-hole channel and the fitted quantities are the strengths of |Tz|=1 proton and neutron seniority residual interactions. As a result, the two fits yield sets of strengths in excellent agreement: about 0.1% for the neutron parameters and 0.2% for protons. In contrast when one performs such a fit on odd-even staggering from quantities deduced from BCS gaps or minimal quasiparticle energies in even-even nuclei, as is traditional, one obtains results significantly different from those obtained in the same nuclei by a fit of moments of inertia. As a conclusion, beyond providing a phenomenological tool for microscopic calculations in this region, we have illustrated the proposition made in the seminal paper of Bohr, Mottelson and Pines that moments of inertia and odd-even staggering in selected nuclei were excellent measuring sticks of nuclear pairing correlations., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Samples of middle ear discharge were collected from each patient and cultured using standard microbiological techniques, and bacterial identification was performed. Drug susceptibility pattern was assessed according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute criteria.Results: The study sample (n=225) comprised 122 females and 103 males. Among 225 samples tested, bacterial growth was present in 200 (88.9%) and absent in 25 (11.1%) samples. Of 200 samples with bacterial growth, monomicrobial growth was detected in 176 (88%). Gram-positive bacteria were observed in 40 (22.7%) and Gram-negative bacteria in 136 (77.3%) samples. The bacteriology of the samples with monomicrobial growth consisted of (in decreasing frequency) Pseudomonas spp, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Coagulase-negative staphylococci, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella sp. A high rate of resistance was detected against penicillin antibiotics, erythromycin, tetracycline, and co-trimoxazole. Resistance to cephalosporins, clindamycin, vancomycin, linezolid, daptomycin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, levofloxacin, meropenem, and ertapenem was low.Conclusion: While the frequencies of isolated bacterial species were consistent with other reports from the region, differences were observed in the antibiotic resistance of bacterial isolates when examined individually for each antibiotic. Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study on millimeter wave (mmWave) location-based analog beamforming (BF) techniques based on channel estimation. Localization and compressive sensing (CS) effectively reduces mmWave BF complexity and enhance the performance of mmWave system comparable to the conventional mmWave analog BF techniques. BF techniques based on channel state information (CSI) has high complexity in constructing mmWave channel sensing matrix using CS. Location services based techniques highly reduce this complexity by defining the area within which the user equipment (UE) mostly probable to be exist. 40. A Computer Vision Model for Seaweed Foreign Object Detection Using Deep Learning.

Abstract

Seaweed foreign object detection has become crucial for food consumption and industrial use. This process not only can prevent potential health issues, but also maintain the overall marketability of seaweed production in the food industry. Traditional methods of inspecting seaweed foreign objects heavily rely on human judgment, which deals with large volumes with diverse impurities and can be inconsistent and inefficient. An automation system for real-time seaweed foreign object detection in the inspection process should be adopted. However, automated seaweed foreign object detection has several challenges due to its dependency on visual input inspection, such as an uneven surface and undistinguishable impurities. In fact, limited access to advanced technologies and high-cost equipment would also influence visual input acquisition, thereby hindering the advancement of seaweed foreign object detection in this field. Therefore, we introduce a computer vision model utilizing a deep learning-based algorithm to detect seaweed impurities and classify the samples into 'clean' and 'unclean' categories. In this study, we managed to identify six types of seaweed impurities including sand sticks, shells, discolored seaweed, grass, worm shells, and mixed impurities. We collected 1204 images and our model's performance was thoroughly evaluated based on comparisons with three pre-trained models, i.e., Yolov8, ResNet, and MobileNet. Our experiment shows that Yolov8 outperforms the other two models with an accuracy of 98.86%. This study also included the development of an Android application to validate the deep learning engine to ensure its optimal performance. Based on our experiments, the mobile application managed to classify 50 pieces of seaweed samples within 0.2 s each, showcasing its potential use in large-scale production lines and factories. This research demonstrates the impact of Artificial Intelligence on food safety by offering a scalable and efficient solution that can be deployed in other food production processes facing similar challenges. Abstract

Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communication is the spectral frontier to meet the anticipated significant volume of high data traffic processing in next-generation systems. The primary challenges in mm-wave can be overcome by reducing complexity and power consumption by large antenna arrays for massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems. However, the circuit power consumption is expected to increase rapidly. The precoding in mm-wave mMIMO systems cannot be successfully achieved at baseband using digital precoders, owing to the high cost and power consumption of signal mixers and analog-to-digital converters. Nevertheless, hybrid analog–digital precoders are considered a cost-effective solution. In this work, we introduce a novel method for optimizing energy efficiency (EE) in the upper-bound multiuser (MU) - mMIMO system and the cost efficiency of quantized hybrid precoding (HP) design. We propose effective alternating minimization algorithms based on the zero gradient method to establish fully-connected structures (FCSs) and partially-connected structures (PCSs). In the alternating minimization algorithms, low complexity is proposed by enforcing an orthogonal constraint on the digital precoders to realize the joint optimization of computational complexity and communication power. Therefore, the alternating minimization algorithm enhances HP by improving the performance of the FCS through advanced phase extraction, which involves high complexity. Meanwhile, the alternating minimization algorithm develops a PCS to achieve low complexity using HP. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm for MU - mMIMO systems improves EE. The power-saving ratio is also enhanced for PCS and FCS by 48.3% and 17.12%, respectively.
