- Abstract
The Science Teaching Experience Program--Working in Science Education (STEP-WISE) provides teaching experience for postdoctoral scholars holding full-time research appointments. Through a combination of mentorship, deliberate practice, and feedback, the postdocs learn and apply inclusive, evidence-based pedagogies. STEP-WISE is integrated into postdocs' demanding schedules and is sustainable for institutions to run. Here, we assess the effectiveness of STEP-WISE. We used the Classroom Observation Protocol for Undergraduate STEM instruction to quantify instructor and student behaviors in 20 STEP-WISE class sessions from seven courses designed and taught by postdocs in the program. We found that all of the postdocs used student-centered teaching strategies. Also, using a design-based research framework, we studied the program to identify the salient components of its design. Four interconnected key elements contribute to the program's success: (1) two training sessions, (2) a precourse meeting with the mentor, (3) implementation of active-learning strategies with support, and (4) debriefing with the mentor after each class session. STEP-WISE is a replicable model to support postdocs seeking training and experience in evidence-based teaching practices geared to improving undergraduate education and transforming pedagogical practice. We conclude that high-impact teaching can be learned early in a career with streamlined training and intensive mentoring.

ObjectiveWe performed a multicenter study of preterm infants, who were about to undergo patent ductus arteriosus ligation, to determine whether echocardiographic indices of impaired myocardial performance were associated with subsequent development of catecholamine-resistant hypotension following ligation.Study designA standardized treatment approach for hypotension was followed at each center. Infants were considered to have catecholamine-resistant hypotension if their dopamine infusion was > 15 μg kg(-1)min(-1). Echocardiograms and cortisol measurements were obtained between 6 and 14 h after the ligation (prior to the presence of catecholamine-resistant hypotension).ResultForty-five infants were enrolled, 10 received catecholamines (6 were catecholamine-responsive and 4 developed catecholamine-resistant hypotension). Catecholamine-resistant hypotension was not associated with decreased preload, shortening fraction or ventricular output. Infants with catecholamine-resistant hypotension had significantly lower levels of systemic vascular resistance and postoperative cortisol concentration.ConclusionWe speculate that low cortisol levels and impaired vascular tone may have a more important role than impaired cardiac performance in post-ligation catecholamine-resistant hypotension.

616.8 - Abstract
A mutation in the charged multivesicular body protein 2B (CHMP2B) gene, identified in a kindred from the Jutland region of Denmark, segregates with affected family members with clinical presentations of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and is absent in control populations (Gydesen et al., 1987; Gydesen et al., 2002; Skibinski et al., 2005). The mutation is a G>C transition in the splice acceptor site of exon 6 resulting in two novel splice variants CHMP2BInt5 and CHMP2BA10 leading to C-terminal truncation of the CHMP2B protein (Skibinski et al., 2005). Chmp2b knockout (Chmp2b-/-) mice and transgenic mice expressing either wild-type or C-terminally truncated mutant CHMP2B splice variants CHMP2BInt5 and CHMP2BA10 were generated with the aims of examining the normal function of Chmp2b and the effect of mutant CHMP2B species in vivo, as well as providing insight into a potential common FTD mechanism of disease. Quantification of Chmp2b protein in Chmp2b-/- mice demonstrates a significant (85%) depletion of endogenous Chmp2b in the mouse brain. No pathology is identified in the CNS or muscle tissue of these mice however, they do demonstrate significant motor and behavioural abnormalities. CHMP2BInt5 transgenic mice demonstrate neurodegenerative changes including progressive gliosis, accumulation of CHMP2B, p62 and ubiquitin inclusions which are negative for TDP-43 and FUS proteins, consistent with the inclusion pathology observed in patients with CHMP2B mutation. Furthermore, these mice have reduced survival and develop progressive axonopathy characterized by axonal swellings and accumulation of mitochondria and vesicles likely from the endosome¬lysosome and autophagy pathway, implicating altered axonal function in disease pathogenesis. This thesis describes the first mouse models of FTD-3 caused by CHMP2B mutation and presents evidence consistent with a gain-of-function effect unique to the CHMP2BInt5 isoform and provides new insights into the mechanisms of CHMP2B-induced neurodegeneration.

The conceptual cost estimation is a critical indicator of the future of the project's success at the initial process before submitting the project design. Pre-Design cost measuring is recognized as the very important procedure which affects the future of constructing proposed projects of roads. Pre-design cost is a preliminary cost measuring and is considered the prediction of the cost of a project during the planning and design phase. This evaluating and measure provides a great foundation for the process of financial support decisions and cost control. The aim of this study is to create pre-design cost measuring model for constructing road projects by utilizing linear regression technique. The research methodology consists of the data collected from public sectors which are the actual cost of the constructed road projects in Erbil governorate, then models have been developed by applying SPSS software, then the models summarized and selected. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) has been calculated using Excel program to calculate degree of the accuracy for the produced models. The accuracy was between -29% and +51%. As a result of the study regression models are useful and has a big advantage in predicting project cost in pre-design process and the planning stage of the project, by using either simplex computer scheme or any measuring tools.

- Abstract
Self-organized industrial symbiosis (IS) starts with one actor's decision to invest in a waste recovery plant and the other actors' decision to buy the recovered flow. Technical and institutional conditions of the cluster influence actors' decisions. This paper explores the emergence of IS collaborations in industrial clusters under different techno-economic conditions in the long term. We propose a mixed-integer linear programming model that incorporates costs and constraints associated with waste recovery and exchange to study actors' investment decisions and investigate shaped symbiotic exchanges under rising energy prices and limited electricity supply. The approach is implemented in Iran's Persian Gulf Mining and Metals Special Economic Zone as a case study. The results revealed that changes in internal or external condition simultaneously influence the industrial and waste recovery plants. For instance, increasing energy prices without raising product prices significantly decreased the production level of industrial plants and, consequently, heat recovery potential. Furthermore, the waste heat recovery plants' contribution to improving the cluster's economic and environmental performance was not the same. Electricity recovery from a power plant's waste heat can result in 55 PJ grid electricity intake reduction and 720 M€ cluster cash flow increase. Recovered cooling or electricity from the steelmaking plant waste heat was consumed internally rather than shaping IS. These model outcomes show its capability to study IS within the socio-technical structure of the cluster, not a standalone phenomenon. Implemented conceptualization offers a novel system-level approach, which could be adjusted to assess other industrial development strategies., Energie and Industrie

In the present work, the nuclear shell model with Hartree–Fock (HF) calculations have been used to investigate the nuclear structure of 24Mg nucleus. Particularly, elastic and inelastic electron scattering form factors and transition probabilities have been calculated for low-lying positive and negative states. The sd and sdpf shell model spaces have been used to calculate the one-body density matrix elements (OBDM) for positive and negative parity states respectively. Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (SHF) with different parameterizations has been tested with shell model calculation as a single particle potential for reproducing the experimental data along with a harmonic oscillator (HO) and Woods-Saxon (WS) single-particle potentials. The effect of the nuclear effective charge has been implemented via using different folding models; valance, Tassie and Bohr-Mottelson. The evaluated results have been discussed and compared with available experimental data.

Polymer nanocomposites exhibit unique physical properties inaccessible from their individual constituents, which are tunable through the type of the polymer matrix, the type and size of the incorporated nanoparticles, and the doping level, and therefore, can be utilized in a wide range of potential applications. Here, we report the fabrication of pure Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and PVC-based nanocomposites containing different loadings of pure and Cr-doped ZnO nanoparticles, using solvent casting method. Scanning electron microscopy images of the obtained nanocomposite films confirmed the successful incorporation of nanoparticles within the PVC matrix, with higher dispersion quality for the Cr-doped ZnO samples. The prepared nanocomposite samples were found to possess higher thermo-mechanical stability, compared to pure PVC, resulting from the strong interaction between the nanoparticles and polymeric chains, as inferred from their thermogravimetric and dynamic mechanical analysis (TGA and DMA) profiles. Specifically, the temperatures corresponding to the onset and 50% weight loss as well as the glass transition temperature are increased by ~ 88, ~ 34, and ~ 16 °C, respectively, after loading selected amounts of the nanoparticles. In addition to the thermo-mechanical stability, the nanocomposites revealed potentially relevant dielectric response, where the dielectric permittivity exhibits remarkable enhancement, by 400%, compared to pristine PVC. The optical transmission of the PVC is strongly suppressed over the entire visible spectral regime, upon loading the nanoparticles, and its optical band gap (~ 4.1 eV) is red shifted toward the value of pristine ZnO nanoparticles (~ 3.3 eV), while the distinct Cr3+ and Cr6+ optical transitions are preserved for the nanocomposites. The obtained thermo-mechanical stability, required for working devices, together with the here reported improvements in the dielectric response for the nanocomposite samples may alter the typical applications of PVC polymers from being insulating materials to be utilized in energy storage and capacitors manufacture, while the preserved optical properties of the incorporated nanoparticles render these nanocomposites suitable candidates for optoelectronic devices.

Industrial Symbiosis (IS) ,Industrial cluster ,socio-technical systems ,Waste heat recovery ,MILP - Abstract
Emerging economies produce 70-90% of the world’s steel, cement, and chemicals, which are essential for development. However, performance indicators such as carbon intensity and energy use per GDP reveal that industrial development trends in emerging economies are not sustainable. The ideal of industrial development that sustains and improves environmental and social structures has resulted in several scientific disciplines, one of which is industrial symbiosis (IS). Imitating natural ecosystems, IS aims to benefit from geographic proximity in industrial clusters for waste recovery and exchange between traditionally separate industries. The formation of IS results in a more sustainable production system by improving the material and energy efficiency of the whole cluster. Here, there is a need for a systematic approach that acknowledges the socio-technical complexity of clusters for IS implementation. This Ph.D. dissertation aimed to understand how industrial symbiosis (IS) shapes within the complex socio-technical structure of industrial clusters to improve their environmental and economic performance in the long term. The first requirement for IS emergence is the existence of technical and collaborative potential due to geographic proximity. Moreover, external factors also influence actors' behaviors in the cluster and, consequently, IS formation. Rules and regulations, on the one hand, and economic conditions, on the other hand, steer actors' decisions toward IS implementation. This research combines engineering, social science, and economic assessment methods to study IS emergence as a part of a (larger) system. To this end, a stepwise approach was taken, starting with assessing the technical potential for IS in an emerging industrial cluster (Chapter 2). We then studied the structure of previous collaborations in the cluster by analyzing regional and national institutions governing actors' behavior (Chapter 3). After assessing IS emergence's technical, collaborative, and institutional aspects, these aspects were incorporated with financial requirements in a MILP optimization model to study system behavior as a whole (Chapter 4). We investigated the formation of IS collaboration under different external conditions and evaluated the contribution of formed IS collaborations to cluster performance improvement. The research further examined the interplay between IS and carbon capture and storage toward a more sustainable cluster development (Chapter 5).To examine the feasibility and functionality of the proposed methods, we used the “Persian Gulf mines and metals special economic zone” (PGSEZ), an iron and steel-based cluster in Iran, as a real case study. The steel industry is critical for economic modernization and one of the most energy-intensive and polluting industries. 23% of final energy demand and 28% of direct CO2 emissions in the industrial sector belong to iron and steel production. This dissertation extends our understanding of the formation of IS as an integrated component of industrial clusters through several conceptual and methodological contribution, while the case study contributes to filling the gap in regional IS studies in developing oil-rich countries, where governing institutional and economic conditions are different from developed economies.

LISTERIA monocytogenes ,SEROTYPES ,FOOD safety ,FOOD contamination ,POLYMERASE chain reaction - Abstract
Background: Given that controlling Listeria contamination is very important in food chain system, the knowledge of their prevalence in food is very important. Therefore, this study aims to examine the prevalence of important Listeria species in various food types and evaluate serotype distribution, as well as the study of the virulence factors of L. monocytogenes. Methods: During July 2018 and January 2020, 900 food samples were collected in the North of Iran, including beef, chicken, fish, shrimp, milk and yogurt, green vegetables, mixed vegetable salad, Olivier salad, and cottage cheese. After isolation and identification steps, each bacterial DNA was extracted. Then, using specific primers, species, serotypes, and virulence genes of Listeria isolates were evaluated in the samples by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method. Results: The test results of 136 samples (15.1%) were positive for Listeria spp. and the most contaminated food was beef (35%) followed by chicken (29%) and green vegetables (23%). The most isolated Listeria spp. was L. monocytogenes and L. ivanovii. Among L. monocytogenes isolates, the dominant serogroups were 1/2a and 4b; furthermore, all of the isolates of this species harbored four virulence genes, including hlyA, plc, iap, and actA. Conclusion: These reports highlighted the importance of food safety in various food products, particularly raw meats and vegetables. Moreover, contamination of healthy foods such as fish and vegetables with Listeria is an indicator of public health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Given the recent increasing trends in colorectal cancer incidence globally, up-to-date information on the colorectal cancer burden could guide screening, early detection, and treatment strategies, and help effectively allocate resources. We examined the temporal patterns of the global, regional, and national burden of colorectal cancer and its risk factors in 204 countries and territories across the past three decades. Methods: Estimates of incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for colorectal cancer were generated as a part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 by age, sex, and geographical location for the period 1990–2019. Mortality estimates were produced using the cause of death ensemble model. We also calculated DALYs attributable to risk factors that had evidence of causation with colorectal cancer. Findings: Globally, between 1990 and 2019, colorectal cancer incident cases more than doubled, from 842 098 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 810 408–868 574) to 2·17 million (2·00–2·34), and deaths increased from 518 126 (493 682–537 877) to 1·09 million (1·02–1·15). The global age-standardised incidence rate increased from 22·2 (95% UI 21·3–23·0) per 100 000 to 26·7 (24·6–28·9) per 100 000, whereas the age-standardised mortality rate decreased from 14·3 (13·5–14·9) per 100 000 to 13·7 (12·6–14·5) per 100 000 and the age-standardised DALY rate decreased from 308·5 (294·7–320·7) per 100 000 to 295·5 (275·2–313·0) per 100 000 from 1990 through 2019. Taiwan (province of China; 62·0 [48·9–80·0] per 100 000), Monaco (60·7 [48·5–73·6] per 100 000), and Andorra (56·6 [42·8–71·9] per 100 000) had the highest age-standardised incidence rates, while Greenland (31·4 [26·0–37·1] per 100 000), Brunei (30·3 [26·6–34·1] per 100 000), and Hungary (28·6 [23·6–34·0] per 100 000) had the highest age-standardised mortality rates. - Abstract
After assessing IS emergence's, Energie and Industrie
