Antimony (Sb) toxicity is a significant threat to crop production and humans. Its concentration is increasing in soil and water due to human activities which needs dire attention to address this challenge. Biochar is a promising amendment to remediate polluted soils, however, its role in mitigating the toxic impacts of Sb on plants is still unclear. Seaweed-based fertilizer (SBF) has shown appreciable results in improving plant performance, however, its role against metal/metalloids toxicity has not been studied yet. Therefore, this study tested the impacts of BC and SBF in mitigating the harmful effects of Sb on rice. The study was carried out with the following treatments; control, Sb stress (600 mg kg -1 ), Sb stress + biochar (2%), Sb stress + seaweed-based fertilizer (SBF: 2%), and Sb stress + BC (1%) and SBF (1%). The results showed that Sb toxicity adversely affected rice growth and productivity by impeding photosynthetic pigments, leaf relative water contents, increasing production of oxidative stress biomarkers (electrolyte leakage: EL, hydrogen peroxide: H 2 O 2 , malondialdehyde: MDA), and accumulation of Sb in plant parts. Contrarily, BC and SBF blends mitigated Sb-induced growth and yield damages in rice by improving photosynthetic efficiency, osmolyte synthesis, nutrient uptake, soil enzymatic activity, and antioxidant activities. Moreover, BC and SBF blend also reduced the bio-accessible Sb concentration (95.63%), bio-accessibility of Sb (25.40%), Sb transport coefficient (35.70%) and soil Sb antimony concentration (52.74%). Background: The convergence of healthcare and artificial intelligence (AI) introduces a transformative era in medical practice. However, the knowledge and attitudes of healthcare workers concerning the adoption of artificial intelligence in healthcare are currently unknown., Aims: The primary objective was to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of healthcare professionals in Dhaka city, Bangladesh, regarding the adoption of AI in healthcare., Methods: A cross-sectional research design was employed, incorporating a dual-method approach to select participants using randomness and convenience sampling techniques. Validity was ensured through a literature review, content validity, and reliability assessment (Cronbach's alpha = 0.85), and exploratory factor analysis identified robust underlying factors. Data analysis involved descriptive and inferential statistics, including Fisher's exact tests, multivariate logistic regression, and Pearson correlation analysis, conducted using STATA software, providing a comprehensive understanding of healthcare workers' AI adoption in healthcare., Results: This study revealed that age was a significant factor, with individuals aged 18-25 and 26-35 having higher odds of good knowledge and positive attitudes (AOR 1.56, 95 % CI 1.12-2.43; AOR 1.42, 95 % CI 0.98-2.34). Physicians (AOR 1.08, 95 % CI 0.78-1.89), hospital workers (AOR 1.29, 95 % CI 0.92-2.09), and full-time employees (AOR 1.45, 95 % CI 1.12-2.34) exhibited higher odds. Attending AI conferences (AOR 1.27, 95 % CI 0.92-2.23) and learning through research articles/journals (AOR 1.31, 95 % CI 0.98-2.09) were positively associated with good knowledge and positive attitudes. This research also emphasized the strong correlations between knowledge and positive attitudes (r = 0.89, P < 0.001), as well as negative attitudes with poor knowledge (r = 0.65, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: The study highlights the critical need for targeted educational interventions to bridge the knowledge gaps among healthcare professionals regarding AI adoption. The findings reveal that younger healthcare workers, those in full-time employment, and individuals with exposure to AI through conferences or research are more likely to possess good knowledge and hold positive attitudes towards AI integration. These results suggest that policies and training programs must be tailored to address specific demographic differences, ensuring that all groups are equipped to engage with AI technologies. Cadmium (Cd), as the most prevalent heavy metal contaminant poses serious risks to plants, humans, and the environment. The ubiquity of this toxic metal is continuously increasing due to the rapid discharge of industrial and mining effluents and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a novel strategy to alleviate Cd toxicity. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have become the most important NPs used to mitigate the toxicity of abiotic stresses and improve crop productivity. The plants quickly absorb Cd, which subsequently disrupts plant physiological and biochemical processes and increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which causes the oxidation of cellular structures and significant growth losses. Besides this, Cd toxicity also disrupts leaf osmotic pressure, nutrient uptake, membrane stability, chlorophyll synthesis, and enzyme activities, leading to a serious reduction in growth and biomass productivity. Though plants possess an excellent defense mechanism to counteract Cd toxicity, this is not enough to counter higher concentrations of Cd toxicity. Applying Zn-NPs has proven to have significant potential in mitigating the toxic effects of Cd. ZnO-NPs improve chlorophyll synthesis, photosynthetic efficiency, membrane stability, nutrient uptake, and gene expression, which can help to counter toxic effects of Cd stress. Additionally, ZnO-NPs also help to reduce Cd absorption and accumulation in plants, and the complex relationship between ZnO-NPs, osmolytes, hormones, and secondary metabolites plays an important role in Cd tolerance. Thus, this review concentrates on exploring the diverse mechanisms by which ZnO nanoparticles can alleviate Cd toxicity in plants. In the end, this review has identified various research gaps that need addressing to ensure the promising future of ZnO-NPs in mitigating Cd toxicity. The findings of this review contribute to gaining a deeper understanding of the role of ZnO-NPs in combating Cd toxicity to promote safer and sustainable crop production by remediating Cd-polluted soils. This also allows for the development of eco-friendly approaches to remediate Cd-polluted soils to improve soil fertility and environmental quality.

Purpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard investigation for lumbosacral degenerative disc disease. However, there is controversy regarding the clinical value of repeating an MRI scan within 12 months when a patient presents with recurring or changing symptoms. This study measures rates of radiological change in a real-world cohort to guide clinicians when deciding to repeat a scan., Methods: All patients over a 10-year window in one general hospital who underwent two lumbosacral MRI scans for degenerative disc disease within 12 months of each other were included in the study. All MRI reports were manually reviewed. The level of main vertebral pathology was recorded, along with the location of a disc prolapse. Time intervals between the two scans were calculated, and these were collated into 30-day intervals for analysis. The repeat scans were categorized into three groups: no change, radiological improvement, and radiological deterioration. Patients who had clinically significant deterioration in the form of cauda equina compression on MRI scans were recorded., Findings: Four hundred and eighty-one patients were included for analysis. Three hundred and ninety (81%) showed no change in MRI findings, 18 (3.7%) had improvements in their repeat scans, and 73 (15.3%) demonstrated deterioration in their repeat scans. Of the 73 patients with radiological deterioration, three patients (0.62% of the total) required urgent surgical intervention for cauda equina syndrome (CES)., Conclusions: Though there is no alternative to detailed clinical assessment in determining whether a repeat MRI scan is indicated, the findings demonstrate that repeating MRI within 12 months for patients with lumbosacral degenerative disc disease has a low chance of altering the management plan. Over the 10-year period, only three patients required an urgent change to their clinical management. The radial forearm free flap (RFFF) is a surgical technique for addressing intraoral reconstruction. However, with the limitation of an unavoidable defect at the RFFF donor site, split-thickness skin grafts (STSGs) have been a solution for repairing these defects, but they are not without challenges. This study aimed to evaluate an approach using full-thickness skin grafts (FTSGs), comparing their effectiveness in terms of aesthetics, pain, complications, and scarring. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies comparing FTSG with STSG for RFFF donor site repair in head and neck cancer patients were included. Primary outcomes measured were appearance and pain at the RFFF site, and secondary outcomes were infection, tendon exposure, graft loss, and scar assessment. A meta-analysis and systematic review of eight studies demonstrated that FTSG provided a superior aesthetic appearance at the RFFF donor site compared to STSG (p = 0.001), with low heterogeneity among the studies. The analysis found no significant difference in donor site pain between techniques. There were no significant differences in infection, tendon exposure, or skin graft loss between the two graft methods. Various minimally invasive techniques exist for surgical parathyroidectomy. The aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis comparing two popular minimally invasive techniques: minimally invasive video-assisted parathyroidectomy (MIVAP) and open minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (OMIP). An extensive search was conducted of online databases to identify all previous studies that had compared MIVAP and OMIP. The primary outcome measures considered were visual analog scale (VAS) score 24 hours postoperatively, conversion of operation (to open), failure rate and analgesic consumption. The data from these studies was extracted and compiled into a meta-analysis. The literature search yielded 104 studies of which four were included, enrolling 903 patients in this analysis. A significant difference was found regarding rates of conversion to open parathyroidectomy between the two groups, with the OMIP group demonstrating fewer conversions (MD = 3.52, CI = (2.04-6.08), P< 0.00001). No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups when comparing postoperative VAS scores at 24 hours (MD = -1.75, CI = (-9.8-6.3), P = 0.67), consumption of analgesia (OR = 0.49, CI = 0.07-3.54, P = 0.48) or failure rates (OR = 1.81, CI = 0.58-5.72, P = 0.31). OMIP was seen to require less need to convert to open parathyroidectomy with shorter operative times, while similar complication rates and scar lengths to MIVAP. An increasing body of research indicates that annular stability plays a key role for a successful aortic valve repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare a novel open aortic annuloplasty ring (the A-ring) with the Dacron ring. Both rings were compared with native aortic roots in vitro. Eighteen aortic roots were included in the study and randomized into three groups: the native, Dacron, and A-ring group. The roots were evaluated in an in vitro physiologic pulsatile model simulating the left side of the heart. Aortic annulus diameters were significantly reduced both in the Dacron ring group (p = 0.003) and the A-ring group (p = 0.020) when compared with the native group. Both the Dacron ring and A-ring effectively downsized the aortic annulus diameter. Soil compaction due to field trafficking involves a complex interplay of machine-soil properties. In contrast to previous studies simulating worst field scenarios, this two-year field experiment investigated the effects of traffic-induced compaction involving moderate machine operational specifications (axle load, 3.16 Mg; mean ground contact pressure, 77.5 kPa) and lower field moisture contents (< field capacity) at the time of trafficking on soil physical properties, spatial root distribution, and corresponding maize growth and grain yield in sandy loam soil. Two compaction levels, i.e. two (C2) and six (C6) vehicle passes, were compared with a control (C0). Two maize ( Zea mays L.) cultivars, i.e. ZD-958 and XY-335, were used. Results showed topsoil (< 30 cm) compaction with increases in bulk density (BD) and penetration resistance (PR) up to 16.42% and 127.76%, respectively, in the 10-20 cm soil layer in 2017. Field trafficking resulted in a shallower and stronger hardpan. An increased number of traffic passes (C6) aggravated the effects, and the carryover effect was found. Higher BD and PR impaired root proliferation in deeper layers of topsoil (10-30 cm) and promoted shallow horizontal root distribution. However, XY-335, compared with ZD-958, showed deeper root distribution under compaction. Compaction-induced reductions in root biomass and length densities were respectively up to 41% and 36% in 10-20 cm and 58% and 42% in the 20-30 cm soil layer. Consequent yield penalties (7.6%-15.5%) underscore the detriments of compaction, even only in topsoil. Recently, there has been a remarkable increase in rice production owing to genetic improvement and increase in application of synthetic fertilizers. For sustainable agriculture, there is dire need to maintain a balance between profitability and input cost. To meet the steady growing demands of the farming community, researchers are utilizing all available resources to identify nutrient use efficient germplasm, but with very little success. Therefore, it is essential to understand the underlying genetic mechanism controlling nutrients efficiency, with the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) being the most important trait. Information regarding genetic factors controlling nitrogen (N) transporters, assimilators, and remobilizers can help to identify candidate germplasms via high-throughput technologies. Large-scale field trials have provided morphological, physiological, and biochemical trait data for the detection of genomic regions controlling NUE. The functional aspects of these attributes are time-consuming, costly, labor-intensive, and less accurate. Therefore, the application of novel plant breeding techniques (NPBTs) with context to genome engineering has opened new avenues of research for crop improvement programs. Most recently, genome editing technologies (GETs) have undergone enormous development with various versions from Cas9, Cpf1, base, and prime editing. These GETs have been vigorously adapted in plant sciences for novel trait development to insure food quantity and quality. Base editing has been successfully applied to improve NUE in rice, demonstrating the potential of GETs to develop germplasms with improved resource use efficiency. NPBTs continue to face regulatory setbacks in some countries due to genome editing being categorized in the same category as genetically modified (GM) crops. Therefore, it is essential to involve all stakeholders in a detailed discussion on NPBTs and to formulate uniform policies tackling biosafety, social, ethical, and environmental concerns. In the current review, we have discussed the genetic mechanism of NUE and NPBTs for crop improvement programs with proof of concepts, transgenic and GET application for the development of NUE germplasms, and regulatory aspects of genome edited crops with future directions considering NUE.

Introduction Rectal cancer has become a major cause of mortality worldwide. Imaging has a primary role in staging and assessing the response to therapy. MRI is superior to all other modalities in local staging of the rectal tumor and in predicting tumor response. Pelvic MRI has an undeniable role in the therapeutic management of rectal cancer, particularly for the determination of the circumferential resection margin (CRM), evaluation of sphincter invasion, and assessment of the extramural vascular invasion. Post-chemoradiotherapy (CRT) staging aims at assessing treatment response and choosing methods for further treatment such as surgical resection or extended CRT. MRI with diffusion restriction is a non-invasive and useful tool for assessing the treatment response of locally advanced lower rectal cancer. It will reduce the burden of extensive abdominoperineal resection (APR) surgery in patients. Objective The purpose of this study was to determine the role of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the evaluation of post-treatment tumor response in rectal carcinoma. Materials and methods The study was approved by our institutional review board, which waived the requirement for informed consent. The clinical data of all the patients treated for rectal carcinoma at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore between February 1, 2014, and February 28, 2019, were retrospectively evaluated. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) patients with histopathologically proven rectal adenocarcinoma, (2) those who underwent APR before February 2019 at our hospital, and (3) those who underwent MRI including DWI/apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) imaging before and after CRT. Those patients who had upfront surgery without neoadjuvant CRT and those who did not have MRI imaging with DWI/ADC were excluded from the study. Results A total of 200 patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included in this study. Among those, 141 were males and 59 were females. On histology, 110 had moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, 25 had well-differentiated adenocarcinoma, and 65 had poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas. Overall diagnostic accuracy of DWI MRI sequence was calculated to be 91%, while the sensitivity was 98.09%, specificity was 65.12%, positive predictive value was 91.12%, and negative predictive value was 90.32%. In this study, we introduce and study new fuzzy-interval integral is known as fuzzy-interval double integral, where the integrand is fuzzy-interval-valued functions (FIVFs). Also, some fundamental properties are also investigated. Moreover, we present a new class of convex fuzzy-interval-valued functions is known as coordinated convex fuzzy-interval-valued functions (coordinated convex FIVFs) through fuzzy order relation (FOR). The FOR (≼) and fuzzy inclusion relation (⊇) are two different concepts. With the help of fuzzy-interval double integral and FOR, we have proved that coordinated convex fuzzy-IVF establish a strong relationship between Hermite-Hadamard (HH-) and Hermite-Hadamard-Fejér (HH-Fejér) inequalities. With the support of this relation, we also derive some related HH-inequalities for the product of coordinated convex FIVFs. Some special cases are also discussed. Useful examples that verify the applicability of the theory developed in this study are presented. The concepts and techniques of this paper may be a starting point for further research in this area.

Ethylene glycol is a super commodity chemical and it has vital roles in various applications. Its co-production with other chemicals, such as ethylene carbonate and glycerol carbonate, has promised cheaper production cost. Its quantification presents a challenge as its contaminants, such as ethylene carbonate, produce a signal-reducing effect in flame ionized detector. The aim of this study is to evaluate external standard to quantify the composition of glycol mixture. Measurement system analysis was employed on the external standard method. Reliability of the external standard is statistically significant with low p-values, excellent capability indices, and high F-values. The external standard is found to have remarkable precision and trueness as both capability indices are mirroring each other. Furthermore, the capability analysis has a strong correlation with quality measurement. Based on capability indices, the limit of detection is recommended at S/N = 25 and the limit of quantification is recommended at S/N = 100 for a reliable measurement. A high degree of reliability is achieved coherently as almost all uncertainties of coefficients of variations are less than 5%. Climate change can decrease the global maize productivity and grain quality. Maize crop requires an optimal temperature for better harvest productivity. A suboptimal temperature at any critical stage for a prolonged duration can negatively affect the growth and yield formation processes. This review discusses the negative impact of temperature extremes (high and low temperatures) on the morpho-physiological, biochemical, and nutritional traits of the maize crop. High temperature stress limits pollen viability and silks receptivity, leading to a significant reduction in seed setting and grain yield. Likewise, severe alterations in growth rate, photosynthesis, dry matter accumulation, cellular membranes, and antioxidant enzyme activities under low temperature collectively limit maize productivity. We also discussed various strategies with practical examples to cope with temperature stresses, including cultural practices, exogenous protectants, breeding climate-smart crops, and molecular genomics approaches. We reviewed that identified quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and genes controlling high- and low temperature stress tolerance in maize could be introgressed into otherwise elite cultivars to develop stress-tolerant cultivars. Genome editing has become a key tool for developing climate-resilient crops. Moreover, challenges to maize crop improvement such as lack of adequate resources for breeding in poor countries, poor communication among the scientists of developing and developed countries, problems in germplasm exchange, and high cost of advanced high-throughput phenotyping systems are discussed. In the end, future perspectives for maize improvement are discussed, which briefly include new breeding technologies such as transgene-free clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated (Cas)-mediated genome editing for thermo-stress tolerance in maize.

Objective: To determine the safety of pancreaticogastrostomy in pancreaticoduodenectomy in patients with periampullary and pancreatic head neoplasms in terms of surgical technique, pancreatic fistula rate, 30 days mortality and three years survival., Study Design: Cohort study., Place and Duration of Study: Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore, Pakistan, from October 2014 to September 2017., Methodology: Patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic head and periampullary tumors were included. Patients having metastatic disease or involvement of celiac artery, hepatic artery or superior mesenteric artery on preoperative scans, complete encasement of portal vein and superior mesenteric vein (SMV) were excluded. Patients' characteristics including the demographics, surgical technique, postoperative pancreatic fistula, 30 days mortality and three years survival were recorded. Mean ± standard deviation was used for continuous variables while frequencies and percentages were used for categorical variables. Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate survival as a function of time, and survival differences were analysed by either Log-Rank test or Tarone-Ware test. Statistical significance was defined as a two-tailed p-value 0.05., Results: One hundred and one patients underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy. Fifty-eight (57.4%) were males and 43 (42.4%) were females (n=43). Mean age was 51.5 ±14.17 years. The commonly found tumor was periampullary adenocarcinoma which was present in 49.5% (n=50) patients followed by pancreatic head adenocarcinoma which was present in 32.7% (n=33) patients and 17.8% (n=18) patients had other tumors. Most common pathological T-stage was T3 present in 47.5% (n=48) patients, followed by T2 found in 36.6% (n=37) patients and T1 stage was present in 15.8% (n=16) patients. 57.4% (n=58) patients had node positive disease. Pancreaticogastrostomy was done in 87.13% (n=88) patients, while pancreaticojejunostomy was done in 12.87% (n=13) patients. Recurrent disease was noticed in 11.9% (n=12) patients. Mean survival of pancreatic head adenocarcinoma was 787.04 ±81.89 days, which was comparatively less than periampullary adenocarcinoma, i.e. 983.10 ±52.27 days (p=0.08). Overall mean survival was 924 ±41.3 days., Conclusion: Patients with periampullary tumors had a better outcome than pancreatic head tumors in this series. Pancreaticogastrostomy can be a safe alternative to pancreaticojejunostomy, especially in patients having non-dilated pancreatic duct and soft pancreas.

Background: Little is known about unintended pregnancies in the Gaza Strip. This study explored causes and consequences of unintended pregnancies among women in the Gaza Strip., Methods: This was a qualitative study, and included 21 women who had experienced unintended pregnancies previously. Data collection took place in three focus groups of 5-12 participants, which were facilitated by one female researcher. Structured questions on reasons for, causes and impact of unintended pregnancies were answered by all participants. Sessions were audiotaped and responses were transcribed and read by all the researchers to extract themes., Results: The mean age of participants was 34.2±6.0 years, parity was 2.7±0.6 and 16 participants (76.2%) had benefitted from secondary level education or above.Five main themes were identified: (1) economic hardship was the main reason for pregnancies to be unwanted; (2) high pressure was exerted on women for male babies, exposing women to gender-based violence; (3) advanced maternal age was perceived as a social stigma; (4) complete lack of support for women facing unintended pregnancy led to self-management of terminations including attempts of unsafe methods; and (5) changes of methods and incorrect use leading to contraceptive failure was the most frequent cause., Conclusions: Unintended pregnancies in the Gaza Strip are a common cause of distress for women. The most effective way of preventing unintended pregnancies remains access to reliable contraception. However, a service designated to support women facing unintended pregnancies is needed in the Gaza Strip. Grain quality improvement is a key target for rice breeders, along with yield. It is a multigenic trait that is simultaneously influenced by many factors. Over the past few decades, breeding for semi-dwarf cultivars and hybrids has significantly contributed to the attainment of high yield demands but reduced grain quality, which thus needs the attention of researchers. The availability of rice genome sequences has facilitated gene discovery, targeted mutagenesis, and revealed functional aspects of rice grain quality attributes. Some success has been achieved through the application of molecular markers to understand the genetic mechanisms for better rice grain quality; however, researchers have opted for novel strategies. Genomic alteration employing genome editing technologies (GETs) like clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) for reverse genetics has opened new avenues of research in the life sciences, including for rice grain quality improvement. Currently, CRISPR/Cas9 technology is widely used by researchers for genome editing to achieve the desired biological objectives, because of its simple targeting. Over the past few years many genes that are related to various aspects of rice grain quality have been successfully edited via CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Interestingly, studies on functional genomics at larger scales have become possible because of the availability of GETs. In this review, we discuss the progress made in rice by employing the CRISPR/Cas9 editing system and its eminent applications. We also elaborate possible future avenues of research with this system, and our understanding regarding the biological mechanism of rice grain quality improvement.

Increasing planting density is the main method and key management to enhance the grain yield. Preventing lodging and premature senescence in high planting density, and screening and enhancing the density-tolerance of maize variety is the main goal of agronomy. Differential response of maize hybrids to high plant density greatly affect the dry matter accumulation and its allocation to maize kernel, depending upon various traits responsible for crowding stress tolerance, of which ear characteristics are pivotal. Density resistance as a quality appraisal of certain variety permits the construction of a simple and accurate method to determine this value, useful for plant breeding. Therefore, we created a new quantitative method, which tested several maize varieties planted populary in China (e.g. Zhengdan 958, Xianyu 335, and Denghai 661) to quantify their response to crowding stress through model. We established 13 planting densities (ranging 1.67-16.67 plants m -2 ) by adopting fixed line spacing (80 × 40 cm) and then gradually increasing row spacing from 1 m to increasing planting density. A conventional standard plot was also established for verification and evaluation of the plant morphologic characteristics, ear traits, and the yield of maize at various standard densities during 5-year study period. By studying the density-yield relationship, a quantitative model was constructed to identify the density resistance of maize. Grain yield of maize varieties under varying planting densities were simulated, and models of population yield and yield per plant that fitted the data well with high biological significance were produced. From the models, the optimal density of the popular main maize varieties planted in China and the morphological characteristics of each variety at that density were identified. The density-resistance of each variety was referred to as the ear-sensitivity classification. With the highest yield at the optimal density, the plant height of each variety reached 98% to that of tallest plant. The ear/plant ratio was about 0.45, and the ratio between the stem diameter and the largest stem diameter was 0.65-0.80. During the harvest period, the ratio between average single-plant yield and the highest single-plant yield was 0.40-0.50. By gradually increasing planting density, the density resistance of the maize and the changes in yield with density were quantified. Present study provides a convenient tool for the effective selection of varieties by plant breeders through this method and model will help to rapidly identify the density resistance for a new variety and accurate confirmation to optimal planting density, it could be optimized to enable practical production at reasonable planting densities.

Genome manipulation technology is one of emerging field which brings real revolution in genetic engineering and biotechnology. Targeted editing of genomes pave path to address a wide range of goals not only to improve quality and productivity of crops but also permit to investigate the fundamental roots of biological systems. These goals includes creation of plants with valued compositional properties and with characters that confer resistance to numerous biotic and abiotic stresses. Numerous novel genome editing systems have been introduced during the past few years; these comprise zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/Cas9 (CRISPR/Cas9). Genome editing technique is consistent for improving average yield to achieve the growing demands of the world's existing food famine and to launch a feasible and environmentally safe agriculture scheme, to more specific, productive, cost-effective and eco-friendly. Background: Palm oil is one of the major oils and fats produced and traded worldwide. The value of palm oil products is mainly influenced by their quality. According to ISO 17025:2005, accredited laboratories require a quality control procedure with respect to monitoring the validity of tests for determination of quality parameters. This includes the regular use of internal quality control using secondary reference materials. Unfortunately, palm oil reference materials are not currently available. To establish internal quality control samples, the stability of quality parameters needs to be evaluated., Results: In the present study, the stability of quality parameters for palm oil products was examined over 10 months at low temperature storage (6 ± 2 °C). The palm oil products tested included crude palm oil (CPO); refined, bleached and deodorized (RBD) palm oil (RBDPO); RBD palm olein (RBDPOo); and RBD palm stearin (RBDPS). The quality parameters of the oils [i.e. moisture content, free fatty acid content (FFA), iodine value (IV), fatty acids composition (FAC) and slip melting point (SMP)] were determined prior to and throughout the storage period. The moisture, FFA, IV, FAC and SMP for palm oil products changed significantly (P < 0.05), whereas the moisture content for CPO, IV for RBDPO and RBDPOo, stearic acid composition for CPO and linolenic acid composition for CPO, RBDPO, RBDPOo and RBDPS did not (P > 0.05). The stability study indicated that the quality of the palm oil products was stable within the specified limits throughout the storage period at low temperature., Conclusion: The storage conditions preserved the quality of palm oil products throughout the storage period. Lead (Pb) affects plant growth and its related physio-biochemical functions negatively. The present study investigated the responses of five different fragrant rice cultivars viz., Meixiangzhan (MXZ-2), Xiangyaxiangzhan (XYXZ), Guixiangzhan (GXZ), Basmati-385 (B-385), and Nongxiang-18 (NX-18) to four different Pb concentrations viz., 0, 400, 800 and 1200 μM. Results depicted that Pb toxicity significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the plant height, tillering ability and biomass accumulation by causing oxidative damage to rice plants; nonetheless, a significant variation was found in the sensitivity of rice cultivars to Pb toxicity. Soluble sugars increased significantly only at 1200 μM in GXZ and 800 μM in B-385, whilst the maximum reductions in protein contents were observed at 1200 μM Pb for all rice cultivars. Proline contents were reduced for XYXZ and NX-18 at Pb1200 μM. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) as well as reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) showed differential behavior among Pb treatments and rice cultivars. Among rice cultivars, GXZ showed better antioxidative defense system under Pb toxicity compared with all other cultivars. For all rice cultivars, the trend for Pb accumulation was recorded as: roots > stems > leaves. Furthermore, significant but negative correlations among Pb uptake and plant height (r = -0.79), tillers per plant (r = -0.91) and plant dry biomass (r = -0.81) were recorded for all rice cultivars whereas the values of translocation factor (TF) from stems to leaves were higher than roots to stems. In sum, Pb reduced the early growth and caused physio-biochemical changes in all rice cultivars, nonetheless, GXZ proved better able to tolerate Pb stress than all other rice cultivars under study., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Masson SAS. Chilling stress hampers the optimal performance of maize under field conditions precipitously by inducing oxidative stress. To confer the damaging effects of chilling stress, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of some natural and synthetic plant growth regulators, i.e., salicylic acid (SA), thiourea (TU), sorghum water extract (SWE), and moringa leaf extract (MLE) on chilling stress tolerance in autumn maize hybrid. Foliar application of growth regulators at low concentrations was carried out at six leaf (V6) and tasseling stages. An increase in crop growth rate (CGR), leaf area index (LAI), leaf area duration (LAD), plant height (PH), grain yield (GY), and total dry matter accumulation (TDM) was observed in exogenously applied plants as compared to control. In addition, improved physio-biochemical, phenological, and grain nutritional quality attributes were noticed in foliar-treated maize plots as compared to non-treated ones. SA-treated plants reduced 20% electrolyte leakage in cell membrane against control. MLE and SA were proved best in improving total phenolic, relative water (19-23%), and chlorophyll contents among other applications. A similar trend was found for photosynthetic and transpiration rates, whereas MLE and SWE were found better in improving CGR, LAI, LAD, TDM, PH, GY, grains per cob, 1000 grain weight, and biological yield among all treatments including control. TU and MLE have significantly reduced the duration in phenological events of crop at the reproductive stage. MLE, TU, and SA also improved the grain protein, oil, and starch contents as compared to control. Enhanced crop water productivity was also observed in MLE-treated plants. Economic analysis suggested that MLE and SA applications were more economical in inducing chilling stress tolerance under field conditions. Although eliciting behavior of all growth regulators improved morpho-physiological attributes against suboptimal temperature stress conditions, MLE and SA acted as leading agents which proved to be better stress alleviators by improving plant physio-biochemical attributes and maize growth.

While females often reject courtship attempts by heterospecific males, reproductive interference by harassment from such males can nonetheless occur, potentially reducing female fitness. Such effects may be profound following a range expansion, when males from a new species may suddenly encounter (and perhaps even become abundant relative to) females of related native species. Drosophila subobscura recently invaded North America and may impact native species through reproductive interference and other processes. We test for the potential for reproductive interference by D. subobscura males on D. persimilis females in the laboratory. D. subobscura males aggressively copulated with D. persimilis females, including many females that exhibit rejection behaviors. Despite females attempting to dismount the males, the heterospecific copulations are on average longer than conspecific copulations, and females exhibit some reluctance to remate with conspecific males following this harassment. Females confined with both conspecific and heterospecific males produce fewer adult progeny than those with either conspecific males only or with conspecific males and distantly related D. simulans males that do not engage in female harassment. Overall, our results illustrate how reproductive interference by an invasive species can have negative effects on resident natural populations.

Crossing over is well known to have profound effects on patterns of genetic diversity and genome evolution. Far less direct attention has been paid to another distinct outcome of meiotic recombination: noncrossover gene conversion (NCGC). Crossing over and NCGC both shuffle combinations of alleles, and this degradation of linkage disequilibrium (LD) has major evolutionary consequences, ranging from immediate effects on nucleotide diversity to long-term consequences that shape genome evolution, species formation and species persistence. Unlike simple crossing over, NCGC has the potential to alter allele frequencies. Gene conversion can also occur in genomic regions where crossing over does not, and it purportedly exhibits more uniform rates across genomes. Considerable progress has been made towards understanding the mechanisms of gene conversion, and this progress enables us to begin exploring how gene conversion affects processes such as molecular evolution and interspecies gene flow. These topics are timely with the recent shift in focus from a primarily neutral null model of molecular evolution and speciation to one incorporating base levels of selection, making it all the more crucial to understand the basis and evolutionary implications of linkage. Here, we discuss the impact of gene conversion on genome structure and evolution and the current methods for detecting these events. We provide a comprehensive review of how gene conversion breaks down LD and affects both short- and long-term evolutionary processes, and we contrast its impact to that expected from crossing over alone., (© 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

In this paper, we derive a new extension of Hermite-Hadamard's inequality via k -Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals. Two new k -fractional integral identities are also derived. Then, using these identities as an auxiliary result, we obtain some new k -fractional bounds which involve k -Appell's hypergeometric functions. These bounds can be viewed as new k -fractional estimations of trapezoidal and mid-point type inequalities. These results are obtained for the functions which have the harmonic convexity property. We also discuss some special cases which can be deduced from the main results of the paper.

The objective of this paper is to establish some new refinements of fractional Hermite-Hadamard inequalities via a harmonically convex function with a kernel containing the generalized Mittag-Leffler function.

In this article, a new general integral identity involving generalized fractional integral operators is established. With the help of this identity new Hermite-Hadamard type inequalities are obtained for functions whose absolute values of derivatives are convex. As a consequence, the main results of this paper generalize the existing Hermite-Hadamard type inequalities involving the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral.

In this paper, we introduce and study a new class of generalized functions, called generalized geometrically convex functions. We establish several basic inequalities related to generalized geometrically convex functions. We also derive several new inequalities of the Hermite-Hadamard type for generalized geometrically convex functions. Several special cases are discussed, which can be deduced from our main results.

Genetic studies of secondary sexual traits provide insights into whether and how selection drove their divergence among populations, and these studies often focus on the fraction of variation attributable to genes on the X-chromosome. However, such studies may sometimes misinterpret the amount of variation attributable to the X-chromosome if using only simple reciprocal F 1 crosses, or they may presume sexual selection has affected the observed phenotypic variation. We examined the genetics of a secondary sexual trait, male sex comb size, in Drosophila subobscura . This species bears unusually large sex combs for its species group, and therefore, this trait may be a good candidate for having been affected by natural or sexual selection. We observed significant heritable variation in number of teeth of the distal sex comb across strains. While reciprocal F 1 crosses seemed to implicate a disproportionate X-chromosome effect, further examination in the F 2 progeny showed that transgressive autosomal effects inflated the estimate of variation associated with the X-chromosome in the F 1 . Instead, the X-chromosome appears to confer the smallest contribution of all major chromosomes to the observed phenotypic variation. Further, we failed to detect effects on copulation latency or duration associated with the observed phenotypic variation. Overall, this study presents an examination of the genetics underlying segregating phenotypic variation within species and illustrates two common pitfalls associated with some past studies of the genetic basis of secondary sexual traits.

Measures of genetic divergence have long been used to identify evolutionary processes operating within and between species. However, recent reviews have described a bias in the use of relative divergence measures towards incorrectly identifying genomic regions that are seemingly immune to introgression. Here, we present a novel and opposite bias of relative divergence measures: misidentifying regions of introgression between sister species. We examine two distinct haplotypes of intermediate frequency within Drosophila pseudoobscura at the DPSX009 locus. One of these haplotypes had lower relative divergence than another to sister species D. persimilis. Although we and others initially presumed one haplotype have spread via introgression between D. pseudoobscura and D. persimilis, absolute divergence measures and individual sequence analysis suggest that haplotype structuring occurred as the result of within-species processes. The potential for this type of misinference may occur with any haplotype that recently spread within a species. We conclude that absolute measures of genetic divergence are necessary for confirming putative regions of introgression., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Meiotic recombination rate varies across the genome within and between individuals, populations, and species in virtually all taxa studied. In almost every species, this variation takes the form of discrete recombination hotspots, determined in some mammals by a protein called PRDM9. Hotspots and their determinants have a profound effect on the genomic landscape, and share certain features that extend across the tree of life. Drosophila, in contrast, are anomalous in their absence of hotspots, PRDM9, and other species-specific differences in the determination of recombination. To better understand the evolution of meiosis and general patterns of recombination across diverse taxa, we present a truly comprehensive portrait of recombination across time, combining recently published cross-based contemporary recombination estimates from each of two sister species with newly obtained linkage-disequilibrium-based historic estimates of recombination from both of these species. Using Drosophila pseudoobscura and Drosophila miranda as a model system, we compare recombination rate between species at multiple scales, and we suggest that Drosophila replicate the pattern seen in human-chimpanzee in which recombination rate is conserved at broad scales. We also find evidence of a species-wide recombination modifier(s), resulting in both a present and historic genome-wide elevation of recombination rates in D. miranda, and identify broad scale effects on recombination from the presence of an inversion. Finally, we reveal an unprecedented view of the distribution of recombination in D. pseudoobscura, illustrating patterns of linked selection and where recombination is taking place. Genome-wide association studies have reported 11 regions conferring risk of high-grade serous epithelial ovarian cancer (HGSOC). Expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) analyses can identify candidate susceptibility genes at risk loci. Here we evaluate cis-eQTL associations at 47 regions associated with HGSOC risk (P≤10(-5)). For three cis-eQTL associations (P<1.4 × 10(-3), FDR<0.05) at 1p36 (CDC42), 1p34 (CDCA8) and 2q31 (HOXD9), we evaluate the functional role of each candidate by perturbing expression of each gene in HGSOC precursor cells. Overexpression of HOXD9 increases anchorage-independent growth, shortens population-doubling time and reduces contact inhibition. Chromosome conformation capture identifies an interaction between rs2857532 and the HOXD9 promoter, suggesting this SNP is a leading causal variant. Transcriptomic profiling after HOXD9 overexpression reveals enrichment of HGSOC risk variants within HOXD9 target genes (P=6 × 10(-10) for risk variants (P<10(-4)) within 10 kb of a HOXD9 target gene in ovarian cells), suggesting a broader role for this network in genetic susceptibility to HGSOC.

Many molecular ecological and evolutionary studies sample wild populations at a single point in time, but that data represents genetic variation from a potentially unrepresentative snapshot in time. Variation across time in genetic parameters may occur quickly in species that produce multiple generations of offspring per year. Here, we compare genetic diversity in wild caught populations of Drosophila persimilis and Drosophila pseudoobscura collected 16 years apart at the same time of year and same site at 4 X-linked and 2 mitochondrial loci to assess genetic stability. We found no major changes in nucleotide diversity in either species, but we observed a drastic shift in Tajima's D between D. pseudoobscura timepoints at 1 locus associated with increased abundance of a set of related haplotypes. Our data also suggests that D. persimilis may have recently accelerated its demographic expansion. Numerous studies have reported the prevalence of toxoplasmosis among Malaysians and various domestic animals; but there is paucity of information on its prevalence among rodents which could potentially contribute to the transmission of Toxoplasma gondii in both domestic and sylvatic fauna. Five hundred twenty-six rodents were captured from six locations in Malaysia and identified to species. Serum samples were collected from these rodents and tested for T.gondii antibodies using an immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). T.gondii antibodies were found in 5.9% (31/526) of the tested samples. Most of the positive antibodies were from commensal rats: Rattus exulans (9/64, 14.0%), Rattus argentiventer (2/8, 25%), Rattus rattus diardii (10/166, 6.0%) and Rattus tiomanicus (6/215, 2.7%). Only two of the forest rats were positive: Maxomys rajah (1/9, 11.1%) and Rattus bowersi (1/12, 8.3%). Eighteen point one percent of ground squirrels (Tupaia glis) tested (2/11) were positive for antibodies. The highest antibodies titer (1:1024) was found in Rattus exulans followed by T.glis (1:256). Sabak Bernam, Selangor had the highest prevalence (10.8%) followed by Baling, Kedah (5.0%) and Bagan Terap, Selangor (4.0%). None of the serum samples of rodents collected from Gua Musang, Kelantan; Jasin, Malacca; or Labis, Johor were positive. Our study reports for the first time the serologic prevalence of T.gondii antibodies among rodents in Peninsular Malaysia. Further studies are needed to confirm T.gondii infection among wild rodents, such as a bioassay, to assess their potential role in transmission of the parasite.

Low temperature at stand establishment and high temperature at reproductive stage are involved in reduction of grain yield of spring maize. A field study was therefore conducted to evaluate different physiological strategies for improving performance of spring maize under temperature extremes. Seed priming and foliar spray with 3% moringa leaf extract (MLE) and 100 mg L-1 kinetin solution alone or in all possible combinations with each other at three growth stages (knee height, tasseling and grain filling stage) and hydropriming was compared with control. Seed priming plus foliar spray of MLE and kinetin significantly improved stand establishment especially under early sown crop as indicated by reduced mean emergence time (MET), improved emergence index (EI) and final emergence percentage (FEP). Similarly increased chlorophyll contents, crop growth rate, leaf area index, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, relative water content and decreased membrane permeability were recorded in both early and optimum sowing conditions in MLE priming plus foliar spray treatment. All these improvements were harvested in the form of increased yield and harvest index compared with control treatment. Overall crop sown at optimum time performed best but exogenous application of MLE through seed priming and foliar spray maximally improved the performance of early sown maize crop which is attributed more likely due to improved stand establishment, chlorophyll and phenolic contents, increased leaf area duration and grain filling period. It can be concluded that seed priming with MLE along with its foliar spray could increase production of maize under temperature extremes.

Cryopreservation represents an effective technique to maintain the functional properties of human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) and allows pooling of cells via long-term storage for clinical applications, e.g., cell-based therapies. It is crucial to reduce freezing injury during the cryopreservation process by loading the ASCs with the optimum concentration of suitable cryoprotective agents (CPAs). In this study, human ASCs were preserved for 3 months in different combinations of CPAs, including 1) 0.25 M trehalose; 2) 5% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO); 3) 10% DMSO; 4) 5% DMSO + 20% fetal bovine serum (FBS); 5) 10% DMSO + 20% FBS; 6) 10% DMSO + 90% FBS. Interestingly, even with a reduction of DMSO to 5% and without FBS, cryopreserved ASCs maintained high cell viability comparable with standard cryomedium (10% DMSO + 90% FBS), with normal cell phenotype and proliferation rate. Cryopreserved ASCs also maintained their differentiation capability (e.g., to adipocytes, osteocytes and chondrocytes) and showed an enhanced expression level of stemness markers (e.g., NANOG, OCT-4, SOX-2 and REX-1). Our findings suggest that 5% DMSO without FBS may be an ideal CPA for an efficient long-term cryopreservation of human ASCs. These results aid in establishing standardized xeno-free long-term cryopreservation of human ASCs for clinical applications.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 12 epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) susceptibility alleles. The pattern of association at these loci is consistent in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers who are at high risk of EOC. After imputation to 1000 Genomes Project data, we assessed associations of 11 million genetic variants with EOC risk from 15,437 cases unselected for family history and 30,845 controls and from 15,252 BRCA1 mutation carriers and 8,211 BRCA2 mutation carriers (3,096 with ovarian cancer), and we combined the results in a meta-analysis. This new study design yielded increased statistical power, leading to the discovery of six new EOC susceptibility loci. Variants at 1p36 (nearest gene, WNT4), 4q26 (SYNPO2), 9q34.2 (ABO) and 17q11.2 (ATAD5) were associated with EOC risk, and at 1p34.3 (RSPO1) and 6p22.1 (GPX6) variants were specifically associated with the serous EOC subtype, all with P < 5 × 10(-8). Incorporating these variants into risk assessment tools will improve clinical risk predictions for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers.
