Abstract

The influence of epizootic on abundance and demographics and the effect of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) on the mortality, behavior and movements of bighorn sheep are examined. High mortality is found in bighorn sheep infected with infectious keratoconjuctivitis, especially in adult female population, and it is caused by starvation and predation in the diseased population.

17. Fumonisin B1Levels Associated with an Epizootic of Equine Leukoencephalomalacia

Abstract

During the fall of 1989, an episode of equine leukoencephalomalacia involved 18 of 66 purebred Arabian horses at a breeding/training stable in Arizona. Of the 18 horses affected, the condition was fatal in 14. These horses, as well as 48 unaffected horses, had been fed a diet containing a substantial amount of white corn screenings. Gross pathologic findings included liquefactive necrosis in parts of the cerebral white matter and hemorrhagic foci of various sizes in the brain stem. Histopathologic findings included rarefied white matter with pyknotic nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Thin-layer chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, and gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy were utilized to identify and quantitate fumonisin B1in 3 samples of corn from the farm. Concentrations of fumonisin B1range from 37 to 122 ppm. Fumonisin B1was also detected. Using information on diet, animal weights, and feeding practices, estimates of total fumonisin B1dosage were determined. This is the first definitive report on equine leukoencephalomalacia and associated fumonisin B1concentrations.

Abstract

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND METHODS RESULTS CONCLUSIONS Physical activity is beneficial to physical, social, and emotional well‐being, and schools are required to provide opportunities to engage in physical activity. While physical education and school sport have been extensively researched, little is known about the value of informal, unstructured, exercise opportunities.This study involved interviews with 19 adolescent girls who attended “extra” exercise opportunities provided by their school. The 3 opportunities were: (1) informal before‐school exercise sessions at school, (2) before‐school sport training, and (3) externally provided exercise sessions in a community setting during school hours.Students perceived all opportunities as valuable with benefits to confidence, social well‐being, and emotional well‐being. The informal exercise sessions held greater benefits to confidence as confidence transferred from the physical activity context into the academic classroom more so than for those participating in sport. Social benefits were greater for those exercising before school as this opportunity created new relationships with teachers and with students from other classes and year groups.The opportunity to engage in informal exercise with peers before school widened social networks, increased confidence, changed the overall school climate, and increased attendance.
