Abstract Background Cerebral autoregulation is a robust regulatory mechanism that stabilizes cerebral blood flow in response to reduced blood pressure, thereby preventing cerebral ischaemia. Scientists have long believed that cerebral autoregulation also stabilizes cerebral blood flow against increases in intracranial pressure, which is another component that determines cerebral perfusion pressure. However, this idea was inconsistent with the complex pathogenesis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, which includes components of chronic cerebral ischaemia due to mild increases in intracranial pressure. Methods Twenty-one patients who underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery for normal pressure hydrocephalus were included in this study. To determine the pressure setting of the Codman-Hakim programmable valve, intracranial pressure was measured after shunt surgery by puncturing the Ommaya reservoir, which formed a closed circuit with the needle and the syringe. Then, intracranial pressure was continuously measured with intermittent infusion of cerebrospinal fluid from the same closed circuit. We also continuously measured oximetry data, such as regional cerebral oxygen saturation derived from near-infrared spectroscopy monitoring. These data were digitized, recorded, and used for calculating intracranial compliance and the relationship between cerebrospinal fluid volume loading and intracranial pressure. Results This study demonstrates that in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus, cerebral venous vascular bed compression induces mild cerebral ischaemia when intracranial pressure is slightly higher than physiological venous pressure. Cerebral venous compression impairs cerebral blood flow by quadratically increasing circulatory resistance according to Poiseuille’s law. Furthermore, chronic cerebral ischaemia occurred even at low or normal intracranial pressures when deep and subcortical white matter hyperintensities (DSWMHs) were severe. Conclusion The fact that cerebral blood flow impairment begins at very low intracranial pressures indicates that cerebral autoregulation to compensate for reduced venous blood flow is not functioning adequately in NPH. These processes provide a link between impaired cerebrospinal fluid circulation, cerebral autoregulation, and neurological dysfunction, which has been missing in patients with NPH involving small vessel arteriosclerosis. These findings may provide insight into similar conditions, such as normal-tension glaucoma and chronic kidney disease, in which a mild increase in local compartment pressure leads to chronic ischemia in organs protected by autoregulatory mechanisms.

Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

Thermoelectric power generation using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has attracted considerable attention as a clean energy technology. A variety of chemical dopants that are stable in air have been reported to improve the thermoelectric performance of CNT; however, the stability of the chemical dopants is sometimes not reproducible. Therefore, we focused on the effects of CNT and chemical n-dopant structures on the stability and thermoelectric properties. We n-doped CNTs with different properties and measured their transient responses for 180 days. The stability was found to strongly depend on not only the dopant structure but also the structure of the CNT, especially the diameter. This is because CNTs with small diameters have a wide bandgap and a high energy level of the conduction band, and chemical dopants with a stronger electron-donating ability are required to obtain stable n-type CNTs. Therefore, the stability of chemical dopants strongly depends not only on the dopant structure but also on the structure of the CNT itself. This study focuses on the diameter among all the different structural parameters of CNTs. However, our findings indicate that the structure of CNTs is an essential factor to be considered while discussing the stability of chemical dopants.

Female and male glial fibrillary acidic protein-thymidine kinase (GFAP-TK) transgenic rats were made ethanol dependent via a six-week chronic intermittent ethanol vapor (CIE) and ethanol drinking (ED) procedure. During the last week of CIE, a subset of male and female TK rats was fed valcyte to ablate dividing progenitor cells and continued the diet until the end of this study. Following week six, all CIE rats experienced two weeks of forced abstinence from CIE-ED, after which they experienced relapse to drinking, extinction, and reinstatement of ethanol seeking sessions. CIE increased ED in female and male rats, with females having higher ethanol consumption during CIE and relapse sessions compared with males. In both sexes, valcyte reduced the levels of Ki-67-labeled progenitor cells in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus and did not alter the levels in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Valcyte increased ED during relapse, increased lever responses during extinction and, interestingly, enhanced latency to extinguish ethanol-seeking behaviors in males. Valcyte reduced the reinstatement of ethanol-seeking behaviors triggered by ethanol cues in females and males. Reduced seeking by valcyte was associated with the normalization of cytokines and chemokines in plasma isolated from trunk blood, indicating a role for progenitor cells in peripheral inflammatory responses. Reduced seeking by valcyte was associated with increases in tight junction protein claudin-5 and oligodendrogenesis in the dentate gyrus and reduction in microglial activity in the dentate gyrus and mPFC in females and males, demonstrating a role for progenitor cells in the dentate gyrus in dependence-induced endothelial and microglial dysfunction. These data suggest that progenitor cells born during withdrawal and abstinence from CIE in the dentate gyrus are aberrant and could play a role in strengthening ethanol memories triggered by ethanol cues via central and peripheral immune responses.

Airway complications that occur after anterior cervical spine surgery pose a life-threatening risk, which encompasses complications including prolonged intubation, unplanned reintubation, and/or necessity of tracheostomy. The present study aimed to identify the surgical risks associated with postoperative airway complications in neurosurgical training institutes. A retrospective, multicenter, observational review of data from 365 patients, who underwent anterior cervical spine surgery between 2018 and 2022, at three such institutes was carried out. Postoperative airway complication was defined as either the need for prolonged intubation on the day of surgery or the need for unplanned reintubation. The perioperative medical information was obtained from their medical records. The average age of the cohort was over 60 years, with males comprising approximately 70%. Almost all surgeries predominantly involved anterior cervical discectomy and fusion or anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion, with most surgeries occurring at the level of C5/6. In total, 363 of 365 patients (99.5%) were extubated immediately after surgery, and the remaining two patients were kept under intubation because of the risk of airway complications. Of the 363 patients who underwent extubation immediately after surgery, two (0.55%) required reintubation because of postoperative airway complications. Patients who experienced airway complications were notably older and exhibited a significantly lower body mass index. The results of this study suggested that older and frailer individuals are at an elevated risk for postoperative airway complications, with immediate postoperative extubation generally being safe but requiring careful judgment in specific cases.

Abstract Background Glioblastoma usually recurs locally and extracranial metastases are rare. Most patients with extracranial metastases experience recurrence of the primary intracranial tumor. Lymph node metastases are often detected based on lymphadenopathy or symptoms caused by other metastatic sites. Case presentation Herein, we report a case of glioblastoma with lymph node metastasis in which the patient was asymptomatic but exhibited gradually increasing C-reactive protein levels prior to becoming febrile 9 months after the initial C-reactive protein increase. Diagnosis of lymph node metastasis that was delayed because the patient had a fever of unknown origin, no signs of infection, and the primary intracranial tumor did not recur. Chest computed tomography indicated supraclavicular, mediastinal, and hilar lymphadenopathy, and biopsy identified lymph node metastasis of glioblastoma. This is the fifth reported case of lymph node metastasis without intracranial recurrence. Conclusions C-reactive protein levels may be a diagnostic marker for lymph node metastasis in patients with glioblastoma. Further evaluation is needed to elucidate the role of CRP in glioblastoma with lymph node metastasis.

Background: In the cervical nerve sheath tumor (NST) surgery with dumbbell extension of Eden type 2 or 3, selection of anterior, posterior, or combined approach remains controversial. Objectives: This technical note aimed to propose possible advantages of the posterior unilateral approach (PUA). Methods: Six patients who underwent the surgical treatment of cervical NSTs with dumbbell extension of Eden type 2 or 3 were included. The critical surgical steps included (1) complete separation of extradural and intradural procedures, (2) careful peeling of the neural membranes (epineurium and perineurium) from the tumor surface in the extradural procedure, (3) complete removal of the extradural tumor within the neural membranes, (4) intradural disconnection of tumor origin, and (5) intentional tumor removal up to the vertebral artery (VA), i.e., the VA line. Results: The tumor location of dumbbell extension was Eden types 2 and 3 in two and four patients. Gross total resection was achieved in two patients and intentional posterior removal of the tumor to the VA line was achieved in the remaining four patients. No vascular or neural injuries associated with surgical procedures occurred. Postoperative neurological assessment revealed no symptomatic aggravation in all patients. No secondary surgery was performed during the study period. Conclusion: PUA was safe and less invasive for functional recovery and tumor resection, if the anatomical relationship between the tumor and VA is clearly understood. The VA line is an important anatomical landmark to limit the extent of tumor resection.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is essentially benign but locally aggressive, and the rate of local recurrence is high when the resection is not enough. En bloc resection is recommended as an ideal solution for GCT to decrease the risk of local recurrence, but it remains challenging for cervical GCT. In this technical case report, we present a case of extensively infiltrating GCT of the cervical spine completely encasing the vertebral artery (VA) on one side. The tumor was distributed to layers A-D, sectors 3-8 based on the Weinstein-Boriani-Biagini staging. Combined posterior and anterior surgical approach for the cervical spine was successfully performed and followed by postoperative adjuvant pharmacological therapy. This kind of multimodal management may be one of the solutions for advanced cervical GCT.

Spinal intramedullary tumors such as ependymoma or vascular lesions such as cavernous malformation are often at risk of intramedullary hemorrhage. Surgical procedures involving the high cervical spinal cord are often challenging. This technical note included four patients who presented with acute, subacute, or gradual onset of spinal cord dysfunction associated with intramedullary hemorrhage at the C1 or C1/2 level of the high cervical spine. The mean age was 46.3 years (16-74 years). All patients underwent posterior spinal cord myelotomy of the posterior median sulcus or posterolateral sulcus. It was not to exceed the caudal opening of the fourth ventricle (foramen of Magendie) and was assumed to be as high as the caudal medulla oblongata. Total removal of the intramedullary ependymoma or cavernous malformation occurred in three of four cases, and the remaining case had subtotal removal of the ependymoma. None of the patients showed postoperative deterioration of the neurological condition. Pathological examination of all cases revealed intramedullary hemorrhage was associated with ependymoma or cavernous malformation. Posterior spinal myelotomy should be limited to the caudal opening of the fourth ventricle (foramen of Magendie), that is the caudal medulla oblongata, to avoid the significant deterioration after surgery.

We perform electrolyte gating using ionic crystals instead of conventional ionic liquids and gels. By applying a gate voltage and heating the ionic crystal to a liquid state, Fermi level tuning of a carbon nanotube (CNT) film was achieved. Subsequent resolidification at room temperature ensured a fixed ion distribution in the electric double layer at the tuned state. The CNT film maintained the tuned Fermi level for over 30 days, even after the gate electrode was removed. This addresses the challenges associated with handling conventional ionic liquids and is poised to revolutionize the field of electrolyte gating for nanomaterial devices.

Frameless stereotactic brain biopsy (FSB) with navigation system has been widely used. We reported preliminary experience of FSB with intraoperative computed tomography (iCT) and examined the usefulness of this novel adjuvant technique and real target registration error (rTRE) of FSB. The FSB with 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) and iCT was performed on 10 patients. The gadolinium-enhanced lesions on magnetic resonance image were defined as the biopsy target. In the procedure, iCTs were scanned twice, for autoregistration of the navigation system and for confirmation of the position of the actual inserted biopsy needle. The red fluorescence of the samples was observed under excitation with violet-blue light through a low-cut filter of neurosurgical microscope. The distance between the planned target and the tip of the biopsy needle in the image of iCT was calculated in a workstation for the assessment of rTRE. The median volume of the target was 12.13 mL (0.06-39.15 mL). We performed the surgical procedure in a prone position in four patients. None to faint 5-ALA-induced fluorescence was observed in six samples. There existed no sampling errors. The mean target distance between the planned and real targets of the mean rTRE of FSB was 2.7 ± 0.56 mm. The real TRE of FSB was first reported and was larger than the reported rTRE exactly calculated from the fiducial registration error. iCT guarantees accurate tumor sampling with autoregistration regardless of the surgical position and prevents inaccurate biopsy to occur even with ALA fluorescence assistance.

Spinal intramedullary metastasis is an extremely rare event that occurs in advanced cancer. The surgical indications for spinal intramedullary metastasis are highly limited because of surgical difficulty and poor prognosis. In this technical case report, we present a rare case of spinal intramedullary metastasis from the lung that recurred late after local radiation to the spinal cord. The patient progressively experienced relapsed buttock pain and developed gait and urination disorders late after treatment for lung cancer. Imaging examinations suggested the recurrence of spinal intramedullary metastasis in the conus medullaris. Systemic examinations revealed no apparent recurrence in other organs, including the primary lung lesions. Gross total resection of the tumor within the conus medullaris was safely performed using the unilateral posterolateral (PLS) approach and by addition of the contralateral PLS approach. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in which a spinal intramedullary metastatic tumor was successfully removed using a bilateral PLS approach.

Malignant glioma is a highly invasive tumor, and elucidating the glioma invasion mechanism is essential for developing novel therapies. We aimed to highlight actin alpha 2, smooth muscle (ACTA2) as potential biomarkers of brain invasion and distant recurrence in malignant gliomas. Using the human malignant glioma cell line, U251MG, we generated ACTA2 knockdown (KD) cells treated with small interfering RNA, and the cell motility and proliferation of the ACTA2 KD group were analyzed. Furthermore, tumor samples from 12 glioma patients who underwent reoperation at the time of tumor recurrence were utilized to measure ACTA2 expression in the tumors before and after recurrence. Thereafter, we examined how ACTA2 expression correlates with the time to tumor recurrence and the mode of recurrence. The results showed that the ACTA2 KD group demonstrated a decline in the mean motion distance and proliferative capacity compared to the control group. In the clinical glioma samples, ACTA2 expression was remarkably increased in recurrent samples compared to the primary samples from the same patients, and the higher the change in ACTCA2 expression from the start to relapse, the shorter the progression-free survival. In conclusion, ACTA2 may be involved in distant recurrence in clinical gliomas.

High-grade gliomas present a significant challenge in neuro-oncology because of their aggressive nature and resistance to current therapies. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a potential treatment method; however, the boron used by the carrier compounds—such as 4-borono-L-phenylalanine (L-BPA)—have limitations. This study evaluated the use of boron-conjugated 4-iodophenylbutanamide (BC-IP), a novel boron compound in BNCT, for the treatment of glioma. Using in vitro drug exposure experiments and in vivo studies, we compared BC-IP and BPA, with a focus on boron uptake and retention characteristics. The results showed that although BC-IP had a lower boron uptake than BPA, it exhibited superior retention. Furthermore, despite lower boron accumulation in tumors, BNCT mediated by BC-IP showed significant survival improvement in glioma-bearing rats compared to controls (not treated animals and neutrons only). These results suggest that BC-IP, with its unique properties, may be an alternative boron carrier for BNCT. Further research is required to optimize this potential treatment modality, which could significantly contribute to advancing the treatment of high-grade gliomas.

Abstract Radiation therapy is one of standard treatment for malignant glioma after surgery. The microenvironment after irradiation is considered not to be suitable for the survival of tumor cells (tumor bed effect). This study investigated whether the effect of changes in the microenvironment of parenchymal brain tissue caused by radiotherapy affect the recurrence and progression of glioma. 65-Gy irradiation had been applied to the right hemisphere of Fisher rats. After 3 months from irradiation, we extracted RNA and protein from the irradiated rat brain. To study effects of proteins extracted from the brains, we performed WST-8 assay and tube formation assay in vitro. Cytokine production were investigated for qPCR. Additionally, we transplanted glioma cell into the irradiated and sham animals and the median survival time of F98 transplanted rats was also examined in vivo. Immunohistochemical analyses and invasiveness of implanted tumor were evaluated. X-ray irradiation promoted the secretion of cytokines such as CXCL12, VEGF-A, TGF-β1 and TNFα from the irradiated brain. Proteins extracted from the irradiated brain promoted the proliferation and angiogenic activity of F98 glioma cells. Glioma cells implanted in the irradiated brains showed significantly high proliferation, angiogenesis and invasive ability, and the post-irradiation F98 tumor-implanted rats showed a shorter median survival time compared to the Sham-irradiation group. The current study suggests that the microenvironment around the brain tissue in the chronic phase after exposure to X-ray radiation becomes suitable for glioma cell growth and invasion.

Abstract Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are simultaneously isolated and dispersed in organic solvents using a non‐aromatic and highly flexible polymer ethyl cellulose (EC). The colloidal dispersion containing individualized EC‐wrapped BNNTs is stabilized via non‐covalent functionalization through CH‐π and OH‐π interactions between EC and BNNTs. FESEM, TEM, UV‐VIS, FT‐IR, and TG analyses confirm the efficiency of using a simplified and less destructive method without prior heat treatment to enhance the purity and dispersibility of BNNTs in our designed system. This provides a practical approach to the purification and dispersion of BNNTs from a bulk‐produced source, for the fabrication of materials that require large amount of high‐quality BNNTs.

Many large-scale studies revealed that exogenous erythropoietin, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, have no renoprotective effects. We reported the renoprotective effects of endogenous erythropoietin production on renal function in ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI) of the kidney using the prolyl hydroxylase domain (PHD) inhibitor, Roxadustat. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of daprodustat on the progression of chronic renal failure. We retrospectively investigated the effects of daprodustat on the progression of chronic renal failure and renal anemia in patients with stages 3a-5 chronic kidney diseases (estimated glomerular filtration rate, eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2). The results show that daprodustat largely slowed the reduction in eGFR. The recovery of renal function was observed in some patients. Daprodustat is useful not only for renal anemia but also for the preservation of renal function. The renoprotective effect of daprodustat was small in patients with serum creatinine larger than 3–4 mg/dL because of low residual renal function. The appearance of renal anemia would be a sign of the time to start using daprodustat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The incidence of pericardial effusion (PE) during radiofrequency catheter ablation (CA) for atrial fibrillation is approximately 1%. PE is a major complication during CA, but there has been limited literature about the perforation site responsible. Objective: This study aimed to retrospectively investigate the characteristics of the procedure and the patients in whom PE developed during CA. Methods: Of 1363 consecutive patients who underwent catheter ablation from January 2015 to June 2019 in Kyorin University Hospital, we reviewed patients who developed PE during CA. Results: PE during CA occurred in 18 (1.32%) patients (median age, 71 [interquartile range (IQR) 65–77] years, 7 women). The median body mass index was 24 (IQR 20–27). Target arrhythmias for CA of patients with PE include atrial fibrillation (AF) (n = 13, 72%), premature ventricular contraction (n = 2, 11%), ventricular tachycardia (n = 1, 6%), atrial flutter (n = 1, 6%), and orthodromic reciprocating tachycardia (n = 1, 6%). Seventeen patients required pericardiocentesis, resulting in 300 (IQR 192.5–475) mL of drainage. Two patients required emergency surgical repair, and 1 died from aortic dissection. Based on the gas analysis, the drained blood was of venous origin in 47% of the total events and 54% of AF ablation. Conclusion: PE caused by a diagnostic catheter in the right heart is not uncommon, even in AF ablation.

BackgroundAlthough the tap test for patients with suspected idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is still often performed as part of the preoperative evaluation, it is true that some studies have reported the limitations of the tap test, claiming that it does not provide the additional information for appropriate patient selection for surgery. We aimed to determine whether a better method of pre- and post-tap test assessment could lead to appropriate patient selection for shunting.MethodsWe performed the tap test as part of the preoperative evaluation in all 40 patients who underwent lumboperitoneal shunt surgery for iNPH from April 2021 to September 2021. We retrospectively analyzed the patient data. We examined whether a comprehensive evaluation of the effect of the tap test using the Functional Gait Assessment (FGA) and Global Rating of Change (GRC) scales would identify a wider range of patients who would benefit from shunt surgery than the 3-m Timed Up and Go test (TUG) alone.ResultsAssuming a prevalence of 1% for iNPH, the TUG had a sensitivity of 0.23, specificity of 0.71, positive likelihood ratio of 0.79, and negative likelihood ratio of 1.09. When improvement in either the FGA or the GRC was used as a criterion for the validity of the tap test, the sensitivity was 0.88, specificity was 0.17, positive likelihood ratio was 1.06, and negative likelihood ratio was 0.71.ConclusionImprovement in either the FGA or the GRC is a more sensitive criterion for the effectiveness of the tap test for the gait aspect than the TUG. Since the negative likelihood ratio is lower than that for the TUG alone, it is more appropriate to exclude patients with neither FGA nor GRC improvement from surgical indications than to exclude surgical indications based on a negative TUG.

Detection of erythropoietin (Epo) was difficult until a method was developed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). WADA recommended the Western blot technique using isoelectric focusing (IEF)-PAGE to show that natural Epo and injected erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) appear in different pH areas. Next, they used sodium N-lauroylsarcosinate (SAR)-PAGE for better differentiation of pegylated proteins, such as epoetin β pegol. Although WADA has recommended the use of pre-purification of samples, we developed a simple Western blotting method without pre-purification of samples. Instead of pre-purification, we used deglycosylation of samples before SDS-PAGE. The double detection of glycosylated and deglycosylated Epo bands increases the reliability of the detection of Epo protein. All of the endogenous Epo and exogenous ESAs shift to 22 kDa, except for Peg-bound epoetin β pegol. All endogenous Epo and exogenous ESAs were detected as 22 kDa deglycosylated Epo by liquid chromatography/mass spectrum (LC/MS) analysis. The most important factor for the detection of Epo is the selection of the antibody against Epo. WADA recommended clone AE7A5, and we used sc-9620. Both antibodies are useful for the detection of Epo protein by Western blotting.

Integrin αvβ3 is more highly expressed in high-grade glioma cells than in normal tissues. In this study, a novel boron-10 carrier containing maleimide-functionalized closo-dodecaborate (MID), serum albumin as a drug delivery system, and cyclic arginine-glycine-aspartate (cRGD) that can target integrin αvβ3 was developed. The efficacy of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) targeting integrin αvβ3 in glioma cells in the brain of rats using a cRGD-functionalized MID-albumin conjugate (cRGD-MID-AC) was evaluated. F98 glioma cells exposed to boronophenylalanine (BPA), cRGD-MID-AC, and cRGD + MID were used for cellular uptake and neutron-irradiation experiments. An F98 glioma-bearing rat brain tumor model was used for biodistribution and neutron-irradiation experiments after BPA or cRGD-MID-AC administration. BNCT using cRGD-MID-AC had a sufficient cell-killing effect in vitro, similar to that with BNCT using BPA. In biodistribution experiments, cRGD-MID-AC accumulated in the brain tumor, with the highest boron concentration observed 8 h after administration. Significant differences were observed between the untreated group and BNCT using cRGD-MID-AC groups in the in vivo neutron-irradiation experiments through the log-rank test. Long-term survivors were observed only in BNCT using cRGD-MID-AC groups 8 h after intravenous administration. These findings suggest that BNCT with cRGD-MID-AC is highly selective against gliomas through a mechanism that is different from that of BNCT with BPA.

Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.
