We proposed a novel jaw movement tracking method that can measure in six degrees of freedom. The magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet paired with a small, low-power-consumption Hall effect magnetic sensor is used to estimate the relative distance between two objects-in this instance, the lower and upper jaws. By installing a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) orientation sensor in the device, we developed a mouthpiece-type sensing device that can measure voluntary mandibular movements in three-dimensional orientation and position. An evaluation of individuals wearing this device demonstrated its ability to measure mandibular movement with an accuracy of approximately 3 mm. Using the movement recording feature with six degrees of freedom also enabled the evaluation of an individual's jaw movements over time in three dimensions. In this method, all sensors are built onto the mouthpiece and the sensing is completed in the oral cavity. It does not require the fixation of a large-scale device to the head or of a jig to the teeth, unlike existing mandibular movement tracking devices. These novel features are expected to increase the accessibility of routine measurements of natural jaw movement, unrestricted by an individual's physiological movement and posture.

Many real-world applications involve analyzing time-dependent phenomena, which are intrinsically functional, consisting of curves varying over a continuum (e.g., time). When analyzing continuous data, functional data analysis (FDA) provides substantial benefits, such as the ability to study the derivatives and to restrict the ordering of data. However, continuous data inherently has infinite dimensions, and for a long time series, FDA methods often suffer from high computational costs. The analysis problem becomes even more challenging when updating the FDA results for continuously arriving data. In this paper, we present a visual analytics approach for monitoring and reviewing time series data streamed from a hardware system with a focus on identifying outliers by using FDA. To perform FDA while addressing the computational problem, we introduce new incremental and progressive algorithms that promptly generate the magnitude-shape (MS) plot, which conveys both the functional magnitude and shape outlyingness of time series data. In addition, by using an MS plot in conjunction with an FDA version of principal component analysis, we enhance the analyst's ability to investigate the visually-identified outliers. We illustrate the effectiveness of our approach with two use scenarios using real-world datasets. The resulting tool is evaluated by industry experts using real-world streaming datasets.

Data-driven problem solving in many real-world applications involves analysis of time-dependent multivariate data, for which dimensionality reduction (DR) methods are often used to uncover the intrinsic structure and features of the data. However, DR is usually applied to a subset of data that is either single-time-point multivariate or univariate time-series, resulting in the need to manually examine and correlate the DR results out of different data subsets. When the number of dimensions is large either in terms of the number of time points or attributes, this manual task becomes too tedious and infeasible. In this paper, we present MulTiDR, a new DR framework that enables processing of time-dependent multivariate data as a whole to provide a comprehensive overview of the data. With the framework, we employ DR in two steps. When treating the instances, time points, and attributes of the data as a 3D array, the first DR step reduces the three axes of the array to two, and the second DR step visualizes the data in a lower-dimensional space. In addition, by coupling with a contrastive learning method and interactive visualizations, our framework enhances analysts' ability to interpret DR results. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework with four case studies using real-world datasets.

In studies of habitat suitability at landscape scales, transferability of species-landscape associations among sites are likely to be critical because it is often impractical to collect datasets across various regions. However, limiting factors, such as prey availability, are not likely to be constant across scales because of the differences in species pools. This is particularly true for top predators that are often the target for conservation concern. Here we focus on gray-faced buzzards, apex predators of farmland-dominated landscapes in East Asia. We investigated context dependency of "buzzard-landscape relationship", using nest location datasets from five sites, each differing in landscape composition. Based on the similarities of prey items and landscape compositions across the sites, we determined several alternative ways of grouping the sites, and then examined whether buzzard-landscape relationship change among groups, which was conducted separately for each way of grouping. As a result, the model of study-sites grouping based on similarities in prey items showed the smallest ΔAICc. Because the terms of interaction between group IDs and areas of broad-leaved forests and grasslands were selected, buzzard-landscape relationship showed a context dependency, i.e., these two landscape elements strengthen the relationship in southern region. The difference in prey fauna, which is associated with the difference in climate, might generate regional differences in the buzzard-landscape associations.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an uncommon, fatal neoplasm induced by asbestos exposure. Brain metastases from MPM are extremely rare, with most such cases diagnosed only at the time of autopsy. This report describes what we believe to be the first case of MPM metastasizing to the brain after a subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as the subsequent surgical removal of the brain metastasis.

The objective of this study was to develop a probabilistic model to predict the end of lag time (λ) during the growth of Bacillus cereus vegetative cells as a function of temperature, pH, and salt concentration using logistic regression. The developed λ model was subsequently combined with a logistic differential equation to simulate bacterial numbers over time. To develop a novel model for λ, we determined whether bacterial growth had begun, i.e., whether λ had ended, at each time point during the growth kinetics. The growth of B. cereus was evaluated by optical density (OD) measurements in culture media for various pHs (5.5 ∼ 7.0) and salt concentrations (0.5 ∼ 2.0%) at static temperatures (10 ∼ 20°C). The probability of the end of λ was modeled using dichotomous judgments obtained at each OD measurement point concerning whether a significant increase had been observed. The probability of the end of λ was described as a function of time, temperature, pH, and salt concentration and showed a high goodness of fit. The λ model was validated with independent data sets of B. cereus growth in culture media and foods, indicating acceptable performance. Furthermore, the λ model, in combination with a logistic differential equation, enabled a simulation of the population of B. cereus in various foods over time at static and/or fluctuating temperatures with high accuracy. Thus, this newly developed modeling procedure enables the description of λ using observable environmental parameters without any conceptual assumptions and the simulation of bacterial numbers over time with the use of a logistic differential equation.

A 69-year-old woman without diabetes or hypertension presented with a large posterior communicating artery aneurysm projecting beneath the oculomotor nerve manifesting as a 2-week history of progressive diplopia. Neurological examination revealed external ophthalmoplegia and blepharoptosis without pupil involvement. Neuroimaging showed a large aneurysm in the left internal carotid artery projecting postero-inferiorly. Craniotomy and neck clipping of the aneurysm revealed the origin at the junction of the internal carotid artery and posterior communicating artery, and elevation of the oculomotor nerve. Pupil-sparing oculomotor nerve palsy is often assumed to be caused by ischemic injury such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Sometimes compressive lesion can cause pupil-sparing oculomotor nerve palsy with a short interval from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis. Despite the 2-week interval from the onset of symptoms, this patient presented with pupil-sparing oculomotor nerve palsy caused by compressive lesion. Involvement or sparing of the pupil is often considered to be the most important criterion in the diagnosis of isolated oculomotor nerve palsy. This unique case demonstrated that unusual compressive lesions must be taken into consideration in the diagnosis of pupil-sparing oculomotor nerve palsy.

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to examine the efficacy of transplantation of mouse embryonic stem (ES) into Parkinson's disease (PD) model mice as well as the necessity of immunosuppression in allogeneic donor-host combinations., Materials and Methods: ES cells, derived from SvJ129 strain mice, were differentiated into tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive neurons in vitro by an embryoid body (EB)-based multistep differentiation method and used as graft cells for PD mice, which were prepared by injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (OHDA) into C57BL/6, BALB/c and C3H/HeN strains. Mice from each strain were divided into Groups 1-3. Four weeks after the 6-OHDA injection, Group 1 received phosphate-buffered saline in the striatum wounds, while Group 2 received 2 x 10(4) graft cells, and Group 3 mice received 2 x 10(4) graft cells and were also treated with cyclosporine A., Results: Apomorphine-induced rotational behavior was improved in Groups 2 and 3, but not in Group 1. However, the behavioral improvement ceased later in Group 2, whereas sustained improvement was observed in Group 3 throughout the 8 week observation period after transplantation. ES-derived TH(+) cells were found at the grafted sites at the end of the experiment in Groups 2 and 3, and tended to be more abundant in Group 3., Conclusion: Intra-striatum transplantation of ES-derived dopaminergic neurons was effective in treating PD mice, even in allogeneic donor-host combinations. Immunosuppressive treatment did not have an effect on initial behavioral restoration after transplantation; however, it was necessary for sustained improvement over a prolonged period.

Embryonic stem (ES) cells are a potential source for treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI). Although one of the main problems of ES cell-based cell therapy is tumor formation, there is no ideal method to suppress tumor development. In this study, we examined whether transplantation with bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) prevented tumor formation in SCI model mice that received ES cell-derived grafts containing both undifferentiated ES cells and neural stem cells. Embryoid bodies (EBs) formed in 4-day hanging drop cultures were treated with retinoic acid (RA) at a low concentration of 5 x 10(-9) M for 4 days, in order to allow some of the ES cells to remain in an undifferentiated state. RA-treated EBs were enzymatically digested into single cells and used as ES cell-derived graft cells. Mice transplanted with ES cell-derived graft cells alone developed tumors at the grafted site and behavioral improvement ceased after day 21. In contrast, no tumor development was observed in mice cotransplanted with BMSCs, which also showed sustained behavioral improvement. In vitro results demonstrated the disappearance of SSEA-1 expression in cytochemical examinations, as well as attenuated mRNA expressions of the undifferentiated markers Oct3/4, Utf1, Nanog, Sox2, and ERas by RT-PCR in RA-treated EBs cocultured with BMSCs. In addition, MAP2-immunopositive cells appeared in the EBs cocultured with BMSCs. Furthermore, the synthesis of NGF, GDNF, and BDNF was confirmed in cultured BMSCs, while immunohistochemical examinations demonstrated the survival of BMSCs and their maintained ability of neurotrophic factor production at the grafted site for up to 5 weeks after transplantation. These results suggest that BMSCs induce undifferentiated ES cells to differentiate into a neuronal lineage by neurotrophic factor production, resulting in suppression of tumor formation. Cotransplantation of BMSCs with ES cell-derived graft cells may be useful for preventing the development of ES cell-derived tumors.

The effects of CoCl(2) on retinoic acid (RA)-treated embryoid bodies (EBs) were investigated. Four-day EBs were treated with 5x10(-6) M of RA for 4 d, then subjected to attached culturing for 7 d in the presence of CoCl(2) at 0, 20, and 100 microM. Differentiation into MAP2- and GFAP-immunopositive cells was inhibited by CoCl(2) in a dose-dependent manner. Next, RA-treated EBs were dissociated into single cells and cultured for 7 d at an initial cell density of 1x10(3)/cm(2). The number of cells increased in a CoCl(2)-dose dependent fashion. In cultures with 100 microM of CoCl(2), more than 90% of the cells were immunopositive for nestin and nestin-immunopositive cells formed clusters, while there were few cells immunopositive for MAP2 or GFAP. These results suggest that CoCl(2) inhibits neural differentiation of RA-treated EB cells and promotes the proliferation of nestin-immunopositive cells, i.e., embryonic stem (ES)-derived neural stem-like cells.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the fate of microorganisms by using cultivation methods as well as DNA analyses in a commercial microbiological additive (MA) in the course of the composting. Almost all the predominant species in the microbial succession during composting process determined by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) were in disagreement with those determined by the clone library method. None of the microbial species in the composting stages corresponded to the microorganisms identified in the MA either by the cultivation method or DNA analysis. The results in regard to predominant microorganisms of the MA detected from the liquid medium by the PCR-DGGE did not correspond with those detected from the MA itself and composting processes. Although no evidence was found that predominant species in the MA itself dominate in the composting process, predominant species diversity in the MA itself was markedly changed after culturing at different thermophilic temperatures. These results suggested that cultivable microorganisms in the MA did not become predominant in the composting process: however, some microorganisms that are detected from the MA itself by the DNA analysis may act effectively in the composting process.

We isolated ammonia-assimilating microorganisms from the livestock manure treatment systems and evaluated their ammonia-assimilating ability. Many isolates utilized ammonia at high rates when they were purely cultivated in a nitrogen-limited medium to which sterilized lagoon extract had been added. Some isolates that were immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) utilized ammonia present in the media containing viable lagoon microorganisms. Staining with 4',6'-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) indicated that the immobilized high ammonia-assimilating isolates grew dominantly within the PVA beads. High ammonia-assimilating isolates in the mixed culture containing viable lagoon microorganisms were identified as Pseudomonas spp. and member of Rhizobiaceae species by partial sequencing of the 16S ribosomal DNA.

We propose a hierarchical parameter optimization technique which further enhances our original technique for an accurate biological cell simulation. Our original technique generates a k-d tree and uses the coefficient of multiple determination (R2) for tree-branching, however it requires a huge computation time since it processes the response surface at every leaf node of the k-d tree, including those that do not have optimum parameters. In our parameter optimization problem, the objective function is defined as the difference between the measured and calculated waveform of action potentials in a cardiac myocyte. The function value is always non-negative, and is equal to zero if and only if the best optimized parameter is included in the leaf node. To minimize the computational cost problem, our proposed technique takes advantage of the aforementioned conditions and only processes a leaf node if the corresponding Hessian matrix of the objective function is found to be a positive definite matrix. We confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed parameter optimization technique by searching for some pre-determined parameters.

We have commonly employed medical images, not including X-ray photography, which have their image enhanced by taking advantage of certain characteristics of the human body to look for some valuable medical information. In general, the medical imaging modalities have employed an image acquisition method which enhances a certain feature of the seat of a disease for later processing of the acquired images. Typical examples of the feature enhancement for medical images are the active area mapping on fMRI using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM), and the diffusivity mapping on Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) using Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ABC) or Relative Anisotropy (RA). Especially in DTI, many researchers have been trying to reveal the current state of a disease without any invasion of the body by using some variable discriminants. In this paper, we propose a framework, which supports and promotes the creation of new discriminants for DTI. The proposed system enables the users to create new discriminants by using eigen values from the voxels of DTI data, and to search for important clinical information applying discriminant mapping to the DTI slice images.

A new lysyl endopeptidase producing strain, Lysobacter sp. IB-9374, was isolated from soil. This strain secreted the endopeptidase to culture medium at 6-12-fold higher levels relative to Achromobacter lyticus and Lysobacter enzymogenes. The mature Lysobacter sp. enzyme was enzymatically identical to Achromobacter lysyl endopeptidase bearing lysyl bond specificity, a high peptidase activity, a wide pH optimum, and stability against denaturants. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the Lysobacter sp. lysyl endopeptidase gene revealed that the enzyme is synthesized as a precursor protein consisting of signal peptide (20 amino acids (aa)), pro-peptide (185 aa), mature enzyme (268 aa), and C-terminal extension peptide (198 aa). The deduced amino acid sequence of the mature enzyme was totally identical to that of the Achromobacter enzyme. The Lysobacter sp. precursor protein has an 18-aa longer peptide chain following nine consecutive amino acid residues distinct from the Achromobacter counterpart at the C-terminus. Total precursor protein is 671 aa of which only 268 aa are in the finally processed exoenzyme.

The effect of sevoflurane on rat liver mitochondrial respiration has been investigated with a Clark type oxygen electrode at 25 degrees C, pH 7.4. The higher susceptibility of NADH-linked substrate (glutamate) oxidation (with respect to succinate oxidation) to the damages by sevoflurane has been confirmed.
