This research presents a new approach for the synthesis of inorganic nano-platforms containing >2 layers. Nano-platforms were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, etc. Since it has been reported that the maximum tolerable dose of non-porous silica nanoparticles (NPs) in in-vivo studies is higher than that of mesoporous silica, the non-porous silica was prepared. Curcumin (CUR) was trapped between the surfaces of the spherical non-porous silica and titania NPs (<100 nm) as both fluorescent and therapeutic agents, thus resulting in increased loading capacity of the non-porous silica NPs, as well as providing significant photosensitivity, antibacterial activity, and controlled release. In addition, the surface of NPs was enriched with Methyl violet-10B (MV-10B), and Rhodamine B (RhB). Silica@CUR@titania exhibited approximately 9-fold higher fluorescence intensity than silica@CUR NPs. This finding enabled us to design nano-platforms with minimum toxic effect due to low contents of RhB for bioimaging applications. The antimicrobial efficiency of nano-platforms was evaluated against P. aeruginosa, E. coli, S. typhimurium, K. pneumonia, S. epidermidis, S. aureus, B. subtilis, B. cereus, and E. faecalis. It was concluded that titania markedly lowered the minimum inhibitory concentration values (MICs) of CUR against all bacteria except B. subtilis and P. aeruginosa. Abstract: Automated two-dimensional liquid chromatography using the PF2D system from Beckman Coulter provides a fractionation platform well suited for differential proteomic studies. To date, the reliability and reproducibility of PF2D has not been accurately tested. Here, we used an optimized software and a pressure-resistant pH electrode, allowing a precise and reproducible control of the pH limits for each fraction during PF2D. We tested the reliability of this improved system by performing several rounds of fractionation using the same protein extract. Three UV maps were generated, leading to 54 chromatograms and more than 3000 protein peaks. Using semi-automated software for peak-to-peak comparison between 2D-LC chromatograms, we demonstrate that the peak concordance is very high. The rates of concordance were higher in the second dimension repeatability tests, indicating that the limiting factors for 2D-LC reproducibility rely on the pI fractionation and sample preparation steps. The reproducibility between maps was closely related to pH curves similarities, further stressing the need of careful pH adjustment and precise electrode calibration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Nitrogen adsorption on a surface of a non-porous reference material is widely used in the characterization. Traditionally, the enhancement of solid–fluid potential in a porous solid is accounted for by incorporating the surface curvature into the solid–fluid potential of the flat reference surface. However, this calculation procedure has not been justified experimentally. In this paper, we derive the solid–fluid potential of mesoporous MCM-41 solid by using solely the adsorption isotherm of that solid. This solid–fluid potential is then compared with that of the non-porous reference surface. In derivation of the solid–fluid potential for both reference surface and mesoporous MCM-41 silica (diameter ranging from 3 to 6.5 nm) we employ the nonlocal density functional theory developed for amorphous solids. It is found that, to our surprise, the solid–fluid potential of a porous solid is practically the same as that for the reference surface, indicating that there is no enhancement due to surface curvature. This requires further investigations to explain this unusual departure from our conventional wisdom of curvature-induced enhancement. Accepting the curvature-independent solid–fluid potential derived from the non-porous reference surface, we analyze the hysteresis features of a series of MCM-41 samples. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We present a new version of non-local density functional theory (NL-DFT) adapted to description of vapor adsorption isotherms on amorphous materials like non-porous silica. The novel feature of this approach is that it accounts for the roughness of adsorbent surface. The solid–fluid interaction is described in the same framework as in the case of fluid–fluid interactions, using the Weeks–Chandler–Andersen (WCA) scheme and the Carnahan–Starling (CS) equation for attractive and repulsive parts of the Helmholtz free energy, respectively. Application to nitrogen and argon adsorption isotherms on non-porous silica LiChrospher Si-1000 at their boiling points, recently published by Jaroniec and co-workers, has shown an excellent correlative ability of our approach over the complete range of pressures, which suggests that the surface roughness is mostly the reason for the observed behavior of adsorption isotherms. From the analysis of these data, we found that in the case of nitrogen adsorption short-range interactions between oxygen atoms on the silica surface and quadrupole of nitrogen molecules play an important role. The approach presented in this paper may be further used in quantitative analysis of adsorption and desorption isotherms in cylindrical pores such as MCM-41 and carbon nanotubes. The convergent synthesis of poly(benzyl ether) dendrimers was published by Frechet et al. However, the coupling of the lower generation bromide with the 3,5-dihydroxy benzyl alcohol (monomer) involved the use of triphenylphosphine. The purification of higher generation dendrimers was difficult because triphenylphosphine was not easily separated from the desired product. A different approach was studied in our laboratory. A mesylate intermediate was developed, followed by the coupling of the monomer. Dendrimers generated from this process were separated using preparative LC chromatography. Non-porous silica (NPS) chromatography methods were developed to monitor the mesylation. and coupling reactions and to confirm the purity of the preparative chromatography fractions.
