The Covid-19 pandemic radically accelerated the digitalization dynamics that were already in motion in many areas of society, from teleworking to e-commerce, online leisure and e-learning. This resulted in a contradictory redefinition of place as a heterotopic site in which different times and spaces were simultaneously juxtaposed. In the case of higher education, universities had to suddenly digitalize their classes in a broader attempt to ensure the continuity of their curricula. Study abroad programs thereby found themselves in the paradoxical situation of being forced to change to an online format, despite having been fully designed for physical mobility. Through a qualitative approach, the article focuses on a group of undergraduate students of Japanese Studies in Spain, who eventually dropped out of their online mobility placement, which they had started in the belief they would be able to finish it in person in Japan. Drawing on ethnographic interview data, it reveals how they managed to regain their autonomy of action over the narrative of their experience – in a self-liberating process in which empowerment and agency were fundamental – and thus rise above an immobility regime whose chronotopic nature had placed them out of line with their previous imaginings and expectations. The aim of this article is to explore the spatial constitution of the university today, its relation to Bildung in the university, and the way that changes of the universities are conceptually articulated or even programmatically demanded. In the first part of the article, the concept of the so-called 'non-places' advanced by the French ethnologist Marc Augé is used in order to set a conceptual framework for reflecting on the place of the university. In the second part of the article, it is demonstrated that the university is currently being reshaped as a non-place and more specifically, as a transit lounge. Using the example of Minerva University, it is shown how mobilization, optimization, and functionalization of learning become dominant at the expense of forming its own place. In the third part of the article, the relations between Bildung and place are reflected on following Ronald Barnett's ecological approach of the university. While most contemporary refugee fiction explores the difficulties of relocation to the industrialized Global North, Sulaiman Addonia's autobiographically inspired Silence Is My Mother Tongue gives a new direction to the African refugee novel with its gendered exploration of life in an Eritrean refugee camp in Sudan. In that non-place governed by silence and similitude, where both time and law are suspended, the teenage girl Saba and her mute queer brother Hagos paradoxically gain voice and agency. This article demonstrates how the siblings' growing resistance against the camp's state of exception is aimed less at the absent sovereign's necropolitics than at the way in which the refugee community itself uses the camp's panoptic surveillance to enforce traditional gender norms. In Addonia's unique refugee novel, the camp becomes a most unusual feeding ground for gender identities and relations that circumvent the community's patriarchal and heteronormative traditions. This paper analyses how teacher identity is shaped by professional standardisation and regulatory apparatuses in the context of English Further Education from a specifically spatial perspective. We focus on how these apparatuses erode teachers' sense of identity and, paradoxically, quality by establishing what anthropologist Marc Augé (1935–2023) calls 'non-places'. Drawing on interview data and Augé's spatial anthropology, we discuss how places can define, foster and erode identity and, thus, practice. Our data shows how teachers' accounts of their changing spatial experiences reflects the transient nature of their own interpretations of how identities are shaped in these shifting contexts of 'dis/placement' wherein the process of identity construction frequently places individuals in contact with another side of themselves. The article is devoted to the little-known literary work of the American cartoonist Jay Norwood Darling. The current study was conducted on the travelogues “Ding Goes to Russia” (1932) and “The Cruise of the Bouncing Betsy. A Trailer Travelogue” (1937). This article aims to reveal and contextualize the features of J.N. Darling’s travel texts as peripheral genres. The main objective of this work is to analyze the deep structures of the travelogues chronotope, based on which the hypothesis will be put forward. Its essence is that the intensity of the crisis time experience in different spaces and through these spaces modifies the involved genre clichés, giving rise to a tragic (for Soviet space) and optimistic (for American space) premonition. The research methodology is based on the study of the interaction between the centre and periphery of the literary system, in particular, the concept of “semiosphere” formulated by Yu. Lotman. Genre analysis includes comparative and contextual methods of studying texts. The cultural-historical method deepens the understanding of the context of Darling’s literary work. Particularly, it is used to discover the historical and social factors that impact the peculiarities of others and one’s own world perception and image reconstruction. Genre analysis of travelogues with various graphic components, including caricatures, involves an intermedia method of studying the semantic connections between visual and verbal in travelogues. The examination of Darling’s travelogues “Ding Goes to Russia” and “The Cruise of the Bouncing Betsy. A Trailer Travelogue”, which inherited different genre traditions, revealed their conceptual and poetic affinities. In both texts, the author investigates the common issues of civilization and its advancement, as well as the significance of technological progress for a human being. The features of the unmanifested future or hidden phenomena of the present are felt more strongly at a distance from the centre, at the intersection of transit paths. Geography in these travels is perceived through anthropological optics, implemented, among other things, through the concepts of the mutual influence of society and space in an unstable world. The experience of alienation is constructed through images of places displayed identically in both travelogues. In Darling’s travelogues, places outside of symbolic meaning come to the fore of the spatio-temporal structure. According to the concept of M. Auger, their features can be attributed to non-places. The key features of the chronotope of both travelogues are the peripheralization of space, the transformation of places into space, and the related process, the representation of non-places. The caricaturists’ texts exhibit genre peripherality through the dual nature of their poetic codes. Behind the secondary nature of the genre constructions of both texts, one cannot help but see individual searches reflected in the unique role and methods of spatial metaphors and imaginary topoi explication. Their semantic and visual density force us to recall and re-estimate the factual writing of the cartoonist in the context of future genre development.

Business parks are a ubiquitous feature of city-edge development. They have attracted attention for their lack of sustainability, spurring interest in how they can be reconfigured or reimagined in the face of ecological collapse and social fragmentation. Inspired by calls to notice everyday practices at the city edge (Tzaninis et al. 2021. "Moving Urban Political Ecology Beyond the 'Urbanization of Nature'." Progress in Human Geography 45 (2): 229–252; Tsing 2015. The Mushroom at the End of the World: On the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins. Princeton: Princeton University Press; Gandy 2022a. "Ghosts and Monsters: Reconstructing Nature on the Site of the Berlin Wall." Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers 47: 1120–1136.) and drawing on data from a participant-led photography exercise at a suburban business park in the north-east of England, this article explores how workers employed at businesses on the park engage with and value its natural assets. We set out from Tzaninis et al.'s (2021) contention that the dominant framing of suburbia as 'non-place' or 'no man's land' has the effect of denying the many intriguing practices unfolding at the city's edge. Resonating with Tsing (2015), we highlight the significance of everyday interaction with nature in an ecologically vulnerable landscape as a creative, open-ended and, potentially, hopeful process. Focused on denizens of the business park, our data draws attention to the possibilities and potentialities of more-than-human encounters, the feeling of tranquillity generated by green spaces, and the sense of freedom that derives from bodily movement in a natural setting. These open-ended practices are distinct from, and 'other than', the dominant way of doing business in the park. Such encounters, drawn out by auto-photography, foment a radical connectedness with nature through which a powerful sense of custodianship and responsibility can find expression. After the publication of Le Silence de mon père in 2016, Doan Bui released her first novel, La Tour ou un chien à Chinatown, in 2022. The novel portrays the lives of the inhabitants of a tower, the Tour Melbourne, located in Paris’s 13th arrondissement. It bears a strong resemblance to Georges Perec’s Life A User’s Manual, particularly in its narrative structure. The novel’s progression, which shifts from one apartment to another, mirrors the zigzagging motion employed in the building at 11 rue Simon-Crubellier, and the detailed descriptions of spaces clearly evoke Perec’s typological approach to spatial representation. In this article, we aim to highlight that the emphasis on spatiality in Doan Bui’s work stems from the interplay of three architectural elements drawn from Georges Perec: empty spaces, enclosed spaces, and antisocial spaces.

Since 2017, more than one million Rohingya have been forcibly displaced from their country of birth, Myanmar. While most of the displaced Rohingya are currently living in refugee camps along the Myanmar–Bangladesh border, thousands have continued their journeys in search of safety across the Andaman Sea, especially to Malaysia, but also Thailand and Indonesia. During these journeys, many endured prolonged stays at sea. Smugglers who organised these passages tried to extort higher payments from their clients' families before proceeding with the passage. More importantly, governments of potential destination countries prevented the boats from disembarking leading to prolonged periods of strandedness at sea. While land transit situations have received substantial academic attention, interest in maritime transit settings has lagged behind. This article relates progressive ideas of place-making found in the refugees studies literature to scenarios of prolonged and forced stuckedness at sea and puts forward the argument that those Rohingya kept on boats inhabit a 'non-place', a space that denies them the opportunity to live in and maintain any sort of organic community. This article shows how Southeast Asian transit and destination countries have exploited the sea for its anti-place-making potential for maritime refugees such as the Rohingya and created carceral seascapes for the boats they travel on. The complexities that attend global mobilities have shown us how migrants recreate home by drawing from their countries of emigration and immigration. In so many ways, any homemaking practices are embedded in home's mobile and sedentarist aspects. Amongst overseas Filipino workers (OFW), this means the performance of Filipino traditions like fiestas, and consumption of Filipino food whilst at the same time learning the language of their destination countries and partaking of their cultural and social practices. Filipino seafarers, however, present us with an interesting case: they perform homemaking practices within the constrained and limiting spaces of the ship where they both work and live. Filipino seafarers have a transportable home ready for unpacking and reconstruction on every ship that they board, drawing less on what the ship offers, but more on what reminds them of home back in the Philippines. Drawn from data gathered from more than a decade of engaging with seafarers on board ships and ashore, this article focuses on the homemaking practices of Filipino seafarers viewed as a means to meaning-making, where ships conceived as non-places could be turned into home, and seafarer wellbeing is specifically defined as self-preservation on board and continuing authority back home. Anthony Burgess's short story 'The Endless Voyager' takes the reader on a whirlwind journey around the world. However, like the story's main character, Norbert Paxton, the reader never seems to arrive anywhere. This postmodern short story flips the legend of the Flying Dutchman on its head, encouraging the reader to test the limits of their understanding of nationalism and citizenship and contemplate this work of fiction in a metatextual way. The present study will begin with a discussion of Burgess's understanding of the purpose of art, followed by an analysis of the story, focusing on intertextual and intermedial references. Finally, the impact these references may have on reader reception will be examined, which will ultimately lead to a consideration of the story's brevity and of the question of freedom for the characters, the author and the story's readers. The concept of non-place coined by Marc Augé thirty years ago became one of the most highlighted theoretical bases of the current literary studies. This trend arises, to a large extent, from the fact that space constitutes one of the intrinsically elementary pillars of the narrative architecture. Likewise, the theoretical formulation around supermodernity that underlies this term is of great interest to analyze the symptoms of the economic, social and emotional precariousness of the contemporary world and its manifestations in literature, and therefore to the understanding of the text. In the present essay we will approach this question from the comparatist methodology through the analysis of a selection of short stories of the American writer Lucia Berlin and the Galician Ismael Ramos, two authors separated in time, space and style, but that we consider that they share a similar treatment of non-place, based on its subversion by the construction of a narrative voice traversed by subjectivity, class consciousness and affection. Led by the question of where an international airport is placed within the aeromobile experience of kinetic elites, the author took on the role of a Business Class passenger to empirically reflect on the issues of placeness and non-placeness while routinely passing through one of the world's busiest airports. The author gradually reveals the unique sense of place individual terminals hold, the familiar at-homeness of frequently used passages, the dwelling-in-motion within virtual infrastructures of habit, the ostensible segregation of 'upper class' passengers, the multiple placemaking efforts and the importance of specific aeromobile practices in the place-related perception of airports. Applying the concepts of place and mobility jointly in their mutual interconnectedness, this (auto)ethnography points to the hybridity of airport perception within the elite passenger experience, which goes beyond the usual binary of a traditional place and a detached non-place. The idea of non-place or placeless places has enjoyed - and still enjoys, although its enunciation is softened - a wide recognition within the theoretical approach to the circumstance of the dormitory cities that nourish the metropolitan areas of large global cities. The purpose of this article lies in the foundation of a critical glance at this type of approach from a case study: that of Parla, an urban settlement inhabited by around 130,000 citizens and located twenty kilometres away from Madrid. We work on the analysis of the discourse held by a large group of neighbours who lend themselves to participate in the research. The memories and daily experiences of these people allow us to identify three milestones on which to articulate a shared story - although always provisionally - and to tag the physical space on which events unfold. The arrival, the conflict and the awakening of a progressive political and/or social commitment leads to the emergence of a certain feeling of identification with the lived place, inherent to its daily experience. In this article, we analyze the experience of women relatives of prisoners when they go to visit them in prison, understanding that the network of places they pass through and the practices they develop there make up the expanded prison space. We will consider how negative discourses about prison partly shape the characteristics of these spaces and, at the same time, how they are experienced by women. We will focus on the analysis of the practices and meanings that are put into play during the journey to the prison, its periphery and the entrance. We will see how visiting a prisoner is an extremely laborious task that requires money, contacts and accumulated knowledge that are resorted to and managed in a contingent way, forming an experience of place. Thus, the web of links that makes it possible to transit through these places will be central when it comes to building networks of solidarity, assistance and militancy. The testimonies are part of the fieldwork carried out since 2017 in unit No. 33 of La Plata and interviews conducted in 2020 and 2021, as a member of the GT-CLACSO "Neighborhoods, families and prisons in circuit" to family members who attend Buenos Aires penitentiaries in the La Plata and Centro complexes. Since old times, religious places have played a key role in the development and configuration of cities. However, the rapid development of cities, especially big cities, has led to widespread structural, operational, and functional developments. These developments have turned the public urban arenas, once the scene of the most pleasurable public memories and large-scale events and the most important places for citizens’ gatherings, into unfamiliar, spiritless, and harsh environments, which have eliminated the human power of discovery and involvement with space. Imam Reza’s religious axis [street], which acts as the entrance into the holy site, is considered an active urban axis located in the traditional texture of the city. This axis, characterized by spatial placeness values, has defined the quality of accessibility to this central site since the Pahlavi era. In the meantime, structural developments, together with the rifts in the historical past of the street, have disrupted the spatial identity of the axis. This article aims to explain the factors affecting the discontinuity of the place identity and investigate the components that need to be redefined in space to create placeness in the Imam Reza axis. The research used a descriptive-analytical method based on documents, library sources, and field observations. The findings revealed that structural continuity in the Imam Reza axis preserves identity characteristics, prevents the historical disruption of the axis with its past, and can also resolve communication-functional problems. That said, the continuity of the axis’s placeness requires these characteristics, and the loss of each undermines placeness and the religious landscape of the axis as a whole.

Challenging the well-established assumption that memory constitutes a determinant of place, this article argues that memory of traumatic events can also turn place into non-place. The characteristic of this transformation is the difference between past and present that reminiscent individuals trace, thus deeming the latter deficient. Hence, the present state of memory-invested sites is perceived as temporary and transient, a non-place that does not contribute to an individual's understanding of themselves, thus creating the need to bridge the past to a future that enables the recovery of a past sense of place. Consequently, on account of its shortcomings, the present creates an interstitial space that triggers recollection, enables evaluation, and allows alternative modes of emplacement to be envisioned. The moors in Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and the family home in Danesbury House constitute two cases in point, exemplifying how memory juxtaposes a harmonious past to a turbulent and tormenting present that needs to be overridden. Being interstitial spaces that, respectively, represent the distinct ends of the nature/culture dichotomy, the moors, and the family residence problematise and endorse mid-Victorian norms about place and identity. The essay aims to analyze the writings of Gianni Celati and his way of ‘re-narrating’ and ‘re-mapping’ the environment in contemporary times, focusing on two trilogies, namely Narratori delle pianure (1985), Quattro novelle sulle apparenze (1987) and Verso la foce (1989), as well as on the collections of short stories Un eroe moderno (2008), Il benessere arriva in casa Pucci (2008), and Selve d’amore (2013). The paper discusses how the themes addressed by the author, who assumes the role of a flâneur of postmodernism, are a way to express his continuous nostalgia for the naturalness, simplicity, and originality of living and narrating.

In White Noise, Don DeLillo presents a world mired in simulation, hyperreality, consumerism, and technologies. This article finds a connection between Jean Baudrillard's "Simulacra" and Marc Augé's "Non-place"; that is, the simulated spaces can actually be considered non-places. This article analyzes the dilemmas contemporary American people are confronted with in three nonplaces: media as non-places, supermarkets and shopping malls as non-places and technologies as non-places, and reveals their useless and meaningless semiotic salvation by consumption of media, commodities and technologies. This article examines the interplay between socio-spatial environments, social control mechanisms and alienated subjectivities in the urban fiction of Spanish author Ray Loriga. It analyses how the search for an urban utopia intertwines in Loriga's work with an attention to processes of commodification, consumerism and social control. These represented processes are read, in turn, as driving the dystopian production of dehumanized, objectified individual subjects. Focusing principally on the futuristic cities of Loriga's 1999 novel Tokio ya no nos quiere , the discussion also draws on relevant elements of two subsequent works – El hombre que inventó Manhattan (2004) and Rendición (2017). Metapoetry is a particular fiction exercise discussed in this article with the purpose of testing new approaches to the avant-garde of the early twentieth century and its presence in Peruvian poetry. The chosen case is that of César Vallejo and the explored text is "Un hombre pasa con un pan al hombro" ('A man passes by with a loaf of bread on his shoulder'), a poem in which the ideas about language, knowledge and culture do not resist any analysis that justifies their functioning as guarantor resources of the civilization, which therefore demands the reader to rethink the fictional nature of this poem. This paper is based on work carried out by the two authors during the first six months of 2021 – a period by which the practices of online learning and teaching had become familiarized and - to some extent - even standardized in our institution, as in most others. We are interested first and foremost in the online teaching space as a social space: as an environment designed to facilitate the interactions that adhibit learning and teaching. How suitable are the environments that we have created to achieving such outcomes? Is it reasonable - for example - to describe the environments in which we learn and teach online as ‘spaces’, using the same word (and in virtually the same sense) that we use to describe the familiar physical teaching spaces of bricks-and-mortar locations? Our primary research involved bringing learners, teachers and digital specialists together into online learning spaces, and then inviting all those present to represent their experiences of the virtual space, using simple analogue tools: coloured pens and paper. The results of these workshops form the basis for this paper. In our conclusion, we attempt to formulate some explanations for the emotionally-inflected nature of these representations of digital learning spaces. Using concepts and approaches from psycho-geography (Augé), social-actor theory (Emirbeyer and Mische) and pedagogic theory (Gourlay, Wenger-Trayner), we begin to outline what might need to happen to the online learning environment as a social space for its full potential and promise to be realised.

Problem definition: Non-place is a concept first introduced in 1992 by the French anthropologist Marc Augé. The present research seeks to investigate this concept in contemporary Iranian photography, using Augé’s theories. In this process, first, the non-place and factors of its origin are described and then the characteristics of the supermodernism era are discussed, by which it is explained how the non-place has been created in this age. In the following, the relationship between non-place and photography has been discussed and attempts have been made to investigate how non-place appeared after the modernism of photography in the works of movements such as modern geography. In addition, the works of two contemporary Iranian photographers, Mohammad Ghazali and Mehran Mohajer, have been studied and the way the concept of non-place is illustrated in the works of these photographers has been sought as well. Objective: The aim of the present study is to understand the concept of non-place using Augé’s theories in the works of two contemporary Iranian photographers, Mohammad Ghazali and Mehran Mohajer. Research Method: The required information has been collected via the library resources and presented in a descriptive-analytical manner. Results: The representation methods of Mohajer and Ghazali indicate the non-place components and the space in their works reveals the geographical, anthropological and sociological relations. In order to represent the lack of identity, history and relationship in the non-place, the two photographers took measures such as temporary exposure through snapshots and happening photography, representing the distortion of collective identity in relation to the identity-making factor, replacing the relationship between an individual and object instead of people with each other and generalizing the creation of the work toward extremism in the individual authorities. In addition, it was found that by depicting the distorted details hidden in the general structure of the monument from the place, compared to the present, makes non-place.

Objective: presents the public library as a public and democratic space that provides coexistence and development of the individual, from the perspective of the concepts of anthropological place and non-place theorized by the anthropologist Marc Augé. It recognizes the little social adherence of the public library in the brazilian reality. It exposes historical events about the construction of this institution in Brazil, marked by the culture of privilege. Research Classification: Social, theoretical, with exploratory and qualitative methodological design. Method: Bibliographical research. Main results: review of an epistemological problem: the disconnection between what the public library is and what it should be. Points related to the function of the public library with the concept of anthropological place from the establishment with the community, forming bonds and close relationships. Association of the public library as a non-place, noting the distancing of the institution from the daily life of the citizen, revealing the lack of social adherence and resonance. Conclusion: the concept of public library can be configured as an anthropological place or nonplace; new perspectives on the concept, valuing the institution as a space can be explored; it contributes to the enrichment of reflections and questionings about the popularization of the public library in Brazil, combining theory and practice aiming at a greater reach, adherence and social impact. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Polish government introduced a number of restrictions related to the use of public spaces. During a two-month period - from March to April 2020 - the authorities implemented provisions regulating "social distance," imposing relevant limitations, introducing the obligation to cover mouth and nose, restricting movement in public spaces, limiting the number of people in shops, public facilities and public transport, and later either eased or lifted those restrictions. An ethnographic study of the consequences of these restrictions, i.e., their social impact, requires both special approach and tools. In this paper, I present my efforts to develop such an approach, based on the combination of insights from Edward T. Hall's proxemics and Marc Augé's non-place theory, as well as phenomenology of the body and autoethnography. This paper takes Bill Ashcroft's notion of the Transnation and his interpretation of Deleuze and Guattari's smooth and striated spaces to look into the transnational mobility of the immigrant population to and within the United States of America through the lenses of Sefi Atta's problematic and complex immigrant narratives in two of her short stories, "Green" and "Housekeeping". The paper delves into the kinds of mobilities that immigrants experience within a foreign space, explores their interaction with the different spaces, places and non-places that is shaped by their own cultural understanding, their national roots and the routes they choose in the host nation, both literally and metaphorically. This paper presents the issues of place and attachment to place. The aim of the article is to determine the level of knowledge among the academic community of the university building in which they study or work and its surrounding area, in the context of place attachment. The cognitive component – one of many aspects of identifying with a place – was examined. With limited knowledge about the building in which the study population spends time, calculated in months or years, it is difficult to determine place attachment, identification, or experience. The research method applied was a diagnostic survey, a questionnaire consisting of questions designed by the author. Both students and academics were surveyed. The results showed that students have limited knowledge of the building where they attend classes. The university building appears to be more of an anonymous non-place, without deeper symbolic or social meanings, than a place with which the academic community identifies itself.

Aim of the present essay is to analyze how the critical theory about consumerism and non-place in liquid societies can be seen also in a different way. The case of malls and iper shopping center – mainly addressed to women and young people – opens the possibility of different uses: in the female case the fact of being pressed in doing more things together, combined with the youth multitasking ability and multimedia awareness, create relation opportunities meanwhile doing shopping. In this perspective a fruition of shopping centers can emerge, disconnected from their being non-places of the liquid society, but oriented to a fruition that enhances the generating capacity of new relations, as well as some more critical and conscious consumption methods.

The paper explores the everyday life presented in Ranko Marinković's novel Cyclops. Previous studies on this novel have most often focused on emphasizing the uniqueness of the protagonist's experience and bypassed the commonness of everyday life in which the plot takes place. By insisting on the shift of everyday experiences from the realm of the ordinary to the realm of the unusual world of myths, or by understanding everyday life as carnival time, the meanings of the novel that are more concerned with the micropolitics of the individual as opposed to the macropolitics of the world disappear from the research focus. Distinguishing between places and non-places in contemporary anthropology allows us to discover new meanings of the novel Cyclops which primarily relate to the problematization of the impact of politics on the life of an individual as well opportunities of resistance to these politics. If Cyclops is a swan song of carnival everyday life, it is even more so a farewell for the everyday life that the protagonist experiences in non-places from which he is constantly attempting to run. Supra-modernity that imposes loneliness associated with the fabrication of non-places on the individual is anticipated in the novel in a very convincing way. By placing the protagonist into a world filled with non-places from which it is possible to escape only by accepting its multi-level nature, Marinković's Cyclops has anticipated our modern woes. The paper concludes that Cyclops, as one of the artistically most valuable novels in Croatian literature, has its place in understanding the present as well, because its relationally constructed spaces are also inhabited by individuals for whom constant escape is the only way of release from fear. In this article, a “non-place” in psychoanalysis is defined based on two concepts: the virtual and the aphanisis point. The subject of psychoanalysis will be challenged in an increasingly evanescent movement in relation to a subject’s proposal of desire and lack (lack-of-being). A criticism will be elaborated throughout the text, problematizing the traditional structures of psychoanalytic psychopathology. The identification is also questioned, not in its existence, but in the ability to be translated into discourse by the analyst, who in its most radical form presents it without a current state, remaining virtualized in contours never seen in culture. The analyst’s potency is present, and the traditional psychoanalyst is questioned in his listening in order to bring up a new ethics for contemporary psychoanalytic clinic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article connects Applied Linguistics to Anthropology by reflecting on the experience of settlement in the country of reception as a form of transit from places to non-places in the context of Supermodernity as proposed by the anthropologist Marc Augé (1992). Starting from a theoretical-conceptual reflection, this paper illustrates the concept of non-place with a practical example to argue that the migration transit empties the migrants of individuality and builds feelings of anxiety coming from the absence of hypothesis of past or future. Lacking ties with the place of settlement, and without a mastery of local language, migrants continue to experience their new settlement's scenario as a non-place. Thus, building on a literature review, the teaching of Portuguese as a Language of Reception in Brazil is presented as a bridge between non-place and place, acting as a catalyst in the process of (re)signifying the new space inhabited by migrants.
