Abstract Heterosis, recognized for improving crop performance, especially in the first filial (F1) generation, remains an area of significant study in the tobacco industry. The low utilization of leaf veins in tobacco contributes to economic inefficiency and resource waste. Despite the positive impacts of heterosis on crop genetics, investigations into leaf-vein ratio heterosis in tobacco have been lacking. Understanding the mechanisms underlying negative heterosis in leaf vein ratio at the molecular level is crucial for advancing low vein ratio leaf breeding research. This study involved 12 hybrid combinations and their parental lines to explore heterosis associated with leaf vein ratios. The hybrids displayed diverse patterns of positive or negative leaf vein ratio heterosis across different developmental stages. Notably, the F1 hybrid (G70 × Qinggeng) consistently exhibited substantial negative heterosis, reaching a maximum of -19.79% 80 days after transplanting. A comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that a significant proportion of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), approximately 39.04% and 23.73%, exhibited dominant and over-dominant expression patterns, respectively. These findings highlight the critical role of non-additive gene expression, particularly the dominance pattern, in governing leaf vein ratio heterosis. The non-additive genes, largely associated with various GO terms such as response to abiotic stimuli, galactose metabolic process, plant-type cell wall organization, auxin-activated signaling pathway, hydrolase activity, and UDP-glycosyltransferase activity, were identified. Furthermore, KEGG enrichment analysis unveiled their involvement in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, galactose metabolism, plant hormone signal transduction, glutathione metabolism, MAPK signaling pathway, starch, and sucrose metabolism. Among the non-additive genes, we identified some genes related to leaf development, leaf size, leaf senescence, and cell wall extensibility that showed significantly lower expression in F1 than in its parents. These results indicate that the non-additive expression of genes plays a key role in the heterosis of the leaf vein ratio in tobacco. This study marks the first exploration into the molecular mechanisms governing leaf vein ratio heterosis at the transcriptome level. These findings significantly contribute to understanding leaf vein ratios in tobacco breeding strategies.

Simple Summary: Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are serine/threonine kinases that play a crucial role in regulating multiple processes, including protein degradation and localization, mRNA stability, endocytosis, apoptosis, cytoskeleton dynamics, and cell migration. To investigate the regulation of MAPKs' gene expression variation in hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus ♀ × O. aureus ♂), we focused on p38 mapk. Our study uncovered a compensatory interaction between cis- and trans-acting elements of the Nile tilapia and blue tilapia sub-genomes, resulting in a nonadditive expression pattern of p38 in hybrid tilapia. In addition, we identified eight specific single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in transcription factor binding sites between Nile tilapia and blue tilapia and demonstrated that it is promoter differences that differentiate parental gene expression using a dual-luciferase reporting system. Overall, this study reveals the non-additive expression patterns of functionally important genes in hybrid fish, particularly in growth and immune responses. Hybridization is a widely used breeding technique in fish species that enhances desirable traits in cultured species through heterosis. However, the mechanism by which hybrids alter gene expression to form heterosis remains unclear. In this study, a group of hybrid tilapia was used to elucidate heterosis through interspecies crossing. Specifically, p38 was analyzed to describe the regulation of gene expression variation in hybrid tilapia. Transcripts from the Nile tilapia allele were found to be significantly higher than those from the blue tilapia allele in hybrid individuals, indicating that the expression of p38 was dominated by Nile tilapia sub-genomic alleles. Brassica rapa is an important oilseed crop in Pakistan. It is a rich source of oil and contains 40%-46% oil. In addition, its meal has 38%-40% protein. Given their high levels of erucic acid and glucosinolate, mustard and rapeseed oil is unhealthy as regular cooking oil. A dire need to exploit the genetic variability of rapeseed germplasm is necessary to improve the performance of cultivars. The line × tester analysis helped estimate various types of gene actions that are important to quantitative traits. The key to successful research is selecting suitable lines and testers and designing good mating patterns. Choosing and developing genotypes with high yield and fatty acid profiles are the major concern of rapeseed breeders. The current research on hybridization and evaluation of Brassica rapa accessions sought better harvest and its related traits from the selected germplasm. The combining ability effects determination used line × tester analysis in rapeseed. The accessions' variability analysis exhibited extremely significant differences in yield and related traits. Recorded data for different morphological and yield-related qualities provided days till 50% flowering, the number of major branches per plant, and the number of secondary branches per plant had positive and significant general combining ability estimates, and all yield-related variables had extremely notable specific combining ability estimates. All the yield-related characteristics displayed a favorable and substantial connection in the examined germplasm. Among the lines, 28244, 40980, and 40981 occurred to be the best general combiners showing the additive gene action. The cross combinations, 40977 × 26283, 40979 × 26283, and 40981 × 26283, indicated significant specific combining ability effects, which showed the non-additive genetic effects of total variance due to the dominance and/or epistasis. The results suggested that the research material used in the remarkable study can benefit by improving yield and fatty acids-related components and can further enhance upcoming breeding programs based on strong particular combining ability impacts. This paper presents a continuous time surplus maximization bi-objective user equilibrium (C-TSmaxBUE) model, in which the users' variability toward the time and toll trade-off in a tolled road network is explicitly considered. Different users are assigned with different ratios of the time saved per unit of money (RTSMs), the values of which represent the different expectations to trade more money for less travel time. Infinite indifference curves are then generated by considering continuously distributed RTSMs in the population. Accordingly, we extend the definition of the path-based time surplus for the C-TSmaxBUE model, which can be formulated as a Beckmann-type mathematical program operating in the space of RTSM boundaries. To solve the problem, we develop a path-based single-boundary adjustment (SBA) algorithm that fits the non-additive structure of the model. The algorithm involves a Newton-type flow equilibration procedure that simultaneously adjusts RTSM boundaries and path flows, as well as a column generation scheme that firstly enumerates all efficient paths and then identifies the paths that have the potential to reduce generalized travel times. Numerical results on a small network show the feature of the equilibrium flow pattern, whereas instances of practical size confirm that SBA is an efficient tool to obtain high-quality equilibrium solutions. Compared to the original TSmaxBUE problem, we found that a larger set of efficient paths will be used when the users' heterogeneity is considered. • Propose a C-TSmaxBUE model. • Prove C-TSmaxBUE is a generalization of UE, GUE, and TSmaxBUE. • Develop an efficient path-based algorithm for solving the C-TSmaxBUE model. • Demonstrate features of C-TSmaxBUE and applicability of the algorithm. Heterosis is a complex biological phenomenon regulated by genetic variations and epigenetic changes. However, the roles of small RNAs (sRNAs), an important epigenetic regulatory element, on plant heterosis are still poorly understood. Here, an integrative analysis was performed with sequencing data from multi-omics layers of maize hybrids and their two homologous parental lines to explore the potential underlying mechanisms of sRNAs in plant height (PH) heterosis. sRNAome analysis revealed that 59 (18.61%) microRNAs (miRNAs) and 64,534 (54.00%) 24-nt small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) clusters were non-additively expressed in hybrids. Transcriptome profiles showed that these non-additively expressed miRNAs regulated PH heterosis through activating genes involved in vegetative growth-related pathways while suppressing those related to reproductive and stress response pathways. DNA methylome profiles showed that non-additive methylation events were more likely to be induced by non-additively expressed siRNA clusters. Genes associated with low-parental expression (LPE) siRNAs and trans-chromosomal demethylation (TCdM) events were enriched in developmental processes as well as nutrients and energy metabolism, whereas genes associated with high-parental expression (HPE) siRNAs and trans-chromosomal methylation (TCM) events were gathered in stress response and organelle organization pathways. Our results provide insights into the expression and regulation patterns of sRNAs in hybrids and help to elucidate their potential targeting pathways contributing to PH heterosis. Field pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a highly nutritious winter-season pulse crop. It is used as food, feed, and fodder and offers nutritional security to low-income people in developing countries. Different graphical approaches like Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Genotype + Genotype × Environment (GGE) biplots were used along with the conventional line × tester to identify efficient parents, combining ability effects and distinct heterotic groups in field pea (Pisum sativum L.). The study used a line tester design (9 × 3) for seed yield and its associated traits. In the conventional analysis, lines Aman and HFP 715 and the tester GP02/1108, as well as crosses HFP 715 × GP02/1108, Aman × GP02/1108, and Pant P-243 × HFP 1426 showed the best GCA (General Combining Ability) and SCA (Specific Combining Ability) effects, respectively, for seed yield and its attributes. The σ2SCA > σ2GCA, and σ2D > σ2A in almost all the traits indicated control of non-additive gene effects. High manifestations of heterobeltiosis for seed yield were evidenced by the superiority of 24 out of 27 crosses over the better parent. The highest significant heterobeltiosis was observed in the cross HFP 715 × GP02/1108, followed by IPF 14-16 × GP02/1108, IPF 14-16 × HFP 1426, DDR-23 × HFP 1426, DDR-23 × GP02/1108, and Aman × GP02/1108 for yield and its attributes. The biplot techniques were used to analyze data and compare their results with conventional line × tester analysis. Overall, graphical analysis results were very similar to those of traditional analysis. Background: To develop a new high yielding variety, it is important to generate utilitarian recombinants and devise an appropriate strategy for selection and advancement of those recombinants. Methods: Keeping this in mind, genetic components of yield and its related traits were determined in nine genotypes of blackgram through half diallel analysis using Hayman’s numerical and graphical approach. Conclusion: The estimates of genetic components deduced the role of non-additive gene action in the inheritance of all traits. The Vr-Wr graphical analysis revealed that assumptions laid by Hayman for diallel analysis were seldom fulfilled. Epistatic effect was predominant in all traits except days to 75 per cent maturity. Unidirectional dominance was observed in days to 75 per cent maturity, pods per plants and seed yield per plant and crude protein content. One major gene group was found controlling all traits except days to 75 per cent maturity and branches per plant. In this article we studied the olive oil extracted from the cold pressed fruits and separated by centrifugation. The rheological models found in the literature for the dependence of the shear rate on the shear stress are: the Herschel-Bulkley model, the Ostwald model and the Bingham model. By linearizing the obtained data, we found two models that describe the behavior of the oil at the temperatures at which the olive oil was studied. Olive oil has a non-Newtonian behavior. This research was undertaken to assess genetic control and combining effects of some essential traits of yield under drought stress. Forty-two hybrids under water-stressed and well-watered conditions were tested in field experiments for two years. Evaluation of the various genetic components of variation was performed. Both the additive (D) and the dominant (H1) variance components were important in most of the traits suggesting both additive and non-additive gene effects under both conditions. The study showed that the minimum number of genes under water-stressed (WS) conditions ranged from 0.02 for pod length to 16.13 for days to 50% flowering. The narrow-sense heritability ranged from 24% for the number of pods per plant and pod length to 66% for the number of days to 50% flowering under WS condition. The impacts of SCA and GCA have been determined. In both conditions IT93K-432-1 and IT97K-499-35 showed the strongest GCA results on both of the traits. Danila×IT93K-432-1, Danilla×IT97K-499-35, and TVu7778×IT99K-573-2-1 have been observed to have the best SCA effect under both conditions for most of the traits. In most traits, additive and non-additive gene effects plus additive × additive and additive × dominance gene interactions were common. In summary, additive and non-additive gene actions were detected; however, there was a preponderance of non-additive gene action in both conditions. As a result, the enhancement of these traits would involve a repetitive selection technique as a result of the prevalence of the dominant gene effect, which would allow favorable recombination of the genes in both conditions in later generations.

Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic phenomenon defined as the silencing of an allele, at least partially, at a given locus based on the sex of the transmitting parent. The objective of the present study was to detect the presence of SNP-phenotype imprinting associations for carcass weight (CW), carcass conformation (CC) and carcass fat (CF) in cattle. The data used comprised carcass data, along with imputed, high-density genotype data on 618,837 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 23,687 cattle; all animal genotypes were phased with respect to parent of origin. Based on the phased genotypes and a series of single-locus linear models, 24, 339, and 316 SNPs demonstrated imprinting associations with CW, CC, and CF, respectively. Regardless of the trait in question, no known imprinted gene was located within 0.5 Mb of the SNPs demonstrating imprinting associations in the present study. Since all imprinting associations detected herein were at novel loci, further investigation of these regions may be warranted. Nonetheless, knowledge of these associations might be useful for improving the accuracy of genomic evaluations for these traits, as well as mate allocations systems to exploit the effects of genomic imprinting. The objective of the present study was to quantify the association between both pedigree and genome-based measures of global heterozygosity and carcass traits, and to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) exhibiting non-additive associations with these traits. The carcass traits of interest were carcass weight (CW), carcass conformation (CC) and carcass fat (CF). To define the genome-based measures of heterozygosity, and to quantify the non-additive associations between SNPs and the carcass traits, imputed, high-density genotype data, comprising of 619,158 SNPs, from 27,213 cattle were used. The correlations between the pedigree-based heterosis coefficient and the three defined genomic measures of heterozygosity ranged from 0.18 to 0.76. The associations between the different measures of heterozygosity and the carcass traits were biologically small, with positive associations for CW and CC, and negative associations for CF. Furthermore, even after accounting for the pedigree-based heterosis coefficient of an animal, part of the remaining variability in some of the carcass traits could be captured by a genomic heterozygosity measure. This signifies that the inclusion of both a heterosis coefficient based on pedigree information and a genome-based measure of heterozygosity could be beneficial to limiting bias in predicting additive genetic merit. Finally, one SNP located on Bos taurus (BTA) chromosome number 5 demonstrated a non-additive association with CW. Furthermore, 182 SNPs (180 SNPs on BTA 2 and two SNPs on BTA 21) demonstrated a non-additive association with CC, while 231 SNPs located on BTA 2, 5, 11, 13, 14, 18, 19 and 21 demonstrated a non-additive association with CF. Understanding the mode of inheritance of traits is vital in the selection of breeding methods for the grain yield and improvement of associated traits in a target environment. Combining ability is one of the powerful indices for the selection of the best cross combinations, parental lines that combine with other lines and the best breeding method for high grain yield improvement programmes. A total of 45 crosses were generated from ten maize varieties developed in low nitrogen environment in a diallel mating fashion without reciprocal. The resultant progenies were investigated in low- and highnitrogen soil to identify the mode of grain yield inheritance and those of related traits in the tested environments. Mean square analysis revealed the preponderance of additive and non-additive gene actions in the expression of maize grain yield and related characters tested under stress and optimal conditions. In this study, it is proved that both standard selection and hybridization breeding strategies are effective for the improvement of most traits involved. This experiment also confirmed the adequacy of sufficient variation in the gene pool present in the maize population that could be exploited in maize grain yield improvement programmes in the tropics. The ratio of SCA to GCA however emphasized the superiority of additive gene effects in the expression of most traits in the tested environments. The results, therefore, suggest that additive gene actions primarily condition the expression of maize grain yield and associated characters in the tested environments. Therefore, suggesting that the standard selection method would be effective for the improvement of most traits tested under the two environments.

Abstract Background Quantitative traits are typically considered to be under additive genetic control. Although there are indications that non-additive factors have the potential to contribute to trait variation, experimental demonstration remains scarce. Here, we investigated the genetic basis of growth in Atlantic salmon by exploiting the high level of genetic diversity and trait expression among domesticated, hybrid and wild populations. Results After rearing fish in common-garden experiments under aquaculture conditions, we performed a variance component analysis in four mapping populations totaling ~ 7000 individuals from six wild, two domesticated and three F1 wild/domesticated hybrid strains. Across the four independent datasets, genome-wide significant quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with weight and length were detected on a total of 18 chromosomes, reflecting the polygenic nature of growth. Significant QTLs correlated with both length and weight were detected on chromosomes 2, 6 and 9 in multiple datasets. Significantly, epistatic QTLs were detected in all datasets. Discussion The observed interactions demonstrated that the phenotypic effect of inheriting an allele deviated between half-sib families. Gene-by-gene interactions were also suggested, where the combined effect of two loci resulted in a genetic effect upon phenotypic variance, while no genetic effect was detected when the two loci were considered separately. To our knowledge, this is the first documentation of epistasis in a quantitative trait in Atlantic salmon. These novel results are of relevance for breeding programs, and for predicting the evolutionary consequences of domestication-introgression in wild populations.

Summary: The dominance effect is a kind of non‐additive effect due to the interaction between alleles at the same locus. Quantitative traits such as growth traits in farm animals have been found to be influenced by dominance effects. However, dominance effects are usually ignored in the genome‐wide association study (GWAS) of complex traits for farm animals. In this study, we performed GWAS and genetic parameters estimation for the two traits age at 100 kg (AGE) and backfat thickness at 100 kg (BF) of 3572 Large White pigs. The pigs were from three breeding farms of China and were genotyped by an in‐house designed 50k SNP chip. Our results showed significant non‐zero variance for the dominance effect of AGE, while the dominance effect of BF was not significant. Using a GWAS model accounting for both additive and dominance effects, we identified three additive and two dominance significant SNPs for the trait AGE. For the trait BF, three genome‐wide significant additive SNPs were detected, but no significant SNP was found for the dominance effect. In total, six important functional genes (NPAS3, USP16, PARN, ARL15, GPC3, ABHD4) near significant SNPs were identified as candidate genes associated with AGE or BF. Notably, ARL15 and PARN were associated with AGE near the dominance association signals. Overall, the newly detected SNPs and newly identified candidate genes in our study added new information about the genetic architectures of growth and fatness traits in pigs, and have the potential to be applied to the pig breeding program in the future. Background and Aims In tundra systems, soil-borne lichens are often the dominant groundcover organisms, and act to buffer microclimate extremes within or at the surface of the soil. However, shrubs are currently expanding across tundra systems, potentially causing major shifts in the microclimate landscape. Methods Here, we compared soil temperature and moisture underneath the dwarf birch Betula nana and seven abundant lichen species in sub-alpine Norway. We also examined mixtures of lichens and dwarf birch – an intermediate phase of shrubification – and measured several functional traits relating to microclimate. Key Results We found that all lichen species strongly buffered the daily temperature range, on average reducing maximum temperatures by 6.9 °C (± 0.7 s.d.) and increasing minimum temperatures by 1.0 °C (± 0.2 s.d.) during summer. The dwarf birch had a much weaker effect (maximum reduced by 2.4 ± 5.0 °C and minimum raised by 0.2 ± 0.9 °C). In species mixtures, the lichen effect predominated, affecting temperature extremes by more than would be expected from their abundance. Lichens also tended to reduce soil moisture, which could be explained by their ability to intercept rainfall. Our trait measurements under laboratory conditions suggest that, on average, lichens can completely absorb a 4.09 mm (± 1.81 s.d.) rainfall event, which might be an underappreciated part of lichen–vascular plant competition in areas where summer rainfall events are small. Conclusions In the context of shrubification across tundra systems, our findings suggest that lichens will continue to have a large effect on microclimate until they are fully excluded, at which point microclimate extremes will increase greatly. Nearly all organisms participate in multiple mutualisms, and complementarity within these complex interactions can result in synergistic fitness effects. However, it remains largely untested how multiple mutualisms impact eco‐evolutionary dynamics in interacting species. We tested how multiple microbial mutualists—N‐fixing bacteria and mycorrrhizal fungi—affected selection and heritability of traits in their shared host plant (Medicago truncatula), as well as fitness alignment between partners. Our results demonstrate for the first time that multiple mutualisms synergistically affect the selection and heritability of host traits and enhance fitness alignment between mutualists. Specifically, we found interaction with multiple microbial symbionts doubled the strength of natural selection on a plant architectural trait, resulted in 2‐ to 3‐fold higher heritability of plant reproductive success, and more than doubled fitness alignment between N‐fixing bacteria and plants. These findings show synergism generated by multiple mutualisms extends to key components of microevolutionary change, emphasising the importance of multiple mutualism effects on evolutionary trajectories. Abstract Background Consumers purchase fresh strawberries all year long. Extending the fruiting season for new strawberry cultivars is a common breeding goal. Understanding the inheritance of repeat fruiting is key to improving breeding efficiency. Several independent research groups using multiple genotypes and analytic approaches have all identified a single genomic region in strawberry associated with repeat fruiting. Markers mapped to this region were used to evaluate breeding parents from the United States Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) strawberry breeding program at Beltsville, Maryland. Results Markers mapped to repeat fruiting identified once-fruiting genotypes but not repeat-fruiting genotypes. Eleven of twenty-three breeding parents with repeat-fruiting marker profiles were actually once fruiting, indicating at least one additional locus acting epistatically to suppress repeat fruiting. Family segregation ratios could not be predicted reliably by the combined use of parental phenotypes and marker profiles, when using a single-gene model. Expected segregation ratios were calculated for all phenotypic and marker-profile combinations possible from the mapped locus combined with a hypothetical dominant or recessive suppressor locus. Segregation ratios specific to an epistatic suppressor acting on the mapped locus were observed in four families. The segregation ratios for two families were best explained by a dominant suppressor acting on the mapped locus, and, for the other two, by a recessive suppressor. Not all of the observed ratios could be explained by one model or the other, and when multiple families with a common parent were compared, there was no predicted genotype for the common parent that would lead to all of the observed segregation ratios. Conclusions Considering all lines of evidence in this study and others, repeat-fruiting in commercial strawberry is controlled primarily by a dominant allele at a single locus, previously mapped by multiple groups. At least two additional genes, one dominant and one recessive, exist that act epistatically to suppress repeat fruiting. Environmental effects and/or incomplete penetrance likely affect phenotype through the suppressor loci, rather than the primary mapped locus. One of the dominant suppressors acts only in the first year, the year the plant is germinated from seed, and not after the plant has experienced a winter.

Thirty six entries of flax (Linum usitatissmum, L.) involving eight parental genotypes and their twenty eight hybrids were evaluated for straw yield and its related traits in the F1 during (2015/2016) and F2 populations during (2016/2017) under early (F2D1) and late (F2D2) sowing dates (two environments) in the Agricultural Research Station, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams Univ., Shalakan, Kalubia Governorate. Mean squares due to genotypes, parents and crosses were highly significant for straw yield, plant height, technical stem length, fiber yield/plant, fiber percentage, fiber length and fiber fineness in the F1 and F2 generations (at early and late sowing dates), indicating that parental genotypes as well as their F1 and F2 generations exhibited reasonable degree of variability for all studied traits. Highly significant variations mean performance were found for parental genotypes and hybrids for straw yield/plant and its related traits in the F1, F2D1and F2D2, indicating presence of wide genetic variability among studied genotypes. The highest mean values were recorded under all studied environments, for straw yield/plant, fiber yield/plant and fiber fineness were found by S. 402/1 genotype, while Sakha 5 gave the highest mean values for plant height, technical stem length and fiber length. General and specific combining ability mean squares were highly significant for all studied traits in F1, F2D1 and F2D2 with the exception of a few cases, indicating the importance of both additive and non-additive gene effects in the expression of straw yield and its components. The additive effects were more important than non-additive effects under all studied environments for straw yield/plant (except at F2D2), plant height (except at F1), fiber percentage and fineness. On the other hand, the non- additive effects were more effective than additive effects for technical stem length, fiber yield/plant and fiber length. Results showed that the parents; Giza 11and Giza 12 for straw yield/plant, Sakha 5 for plant height and fiber length, Sakha 6 for fiber yield/plant, Jowhar for fiber percentage and S. 402/1, Sakha 2, Giza 12 and Sakha 5 for fiber fineness, these parents appeared to be the best general combiners for these traits. Some of the crosses exhibited highly significant and positive SCA effects included high x high and high x low general combiner parents, suggesting that the breeding procedure which utilize both additive and non-additive genetic variances would be more useful for improvement of straw yield and its components of flax.

This article deals with the optimality aspects of directional neighbor balanced block design under the assumption of randomness of block effects, both under additive and neighbor × direct effects non-additive model. Some classes of designs have been shown to be universally optimal for the estimation of direct effects of treatments as well as neighbor effects for the above situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Steganography is the art of covert communication, which aims to hide the secret messages into cover medium while achieving high undetectability. To this end, the framework of minimal distortion embedding is widely adopted for adaptive steganography, where a well-designed distortion function is significant. In this paper, inspired by the phenomenon that the modification of audio samples with the low amplitude will be easily detected, a novel distortion is presented for audio steganography. Taking the fragility of the low amplitude audio samples into account, the proposed distortion is inversely proportional to the amplitude. Furthermore, in order to resist the strong steganalysis, the derivative filter is utilized for acquiring the residual of audio, which plays an important role in distortion definition. The experimental results show that the proposed distortion outperforms the state-of-the-art methods defending strong steganalytic methods. To take a step forward, considering the mutual impact caused by embedding modification, the non-additive extensions of the proposed methods are put forward. The extending experiments show that in most cases, the proposed non-additive extensions can achieve higher level of security than the original methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twelve newly developed white maize inbred lines were crossed with two testers i.e. SC 128 and SC 131 at Ismailia Agricultural Research Station during 2017 season. In 2018 summer season, the 24 top crosses and two white commercial check hybrids; TWC 321 and TWC 324 were evaluated under two locations (Loc); Ismailia and Mallawy Agricultural Research Stations. The studied traits were number of days to 50% silking (DS), plant height (PH), ear height (EH), ear length (EL), ear diameter (ED), number of rows/ear (RE), number of kernels/row (KR) and grain yield (GY). Mean square due to locations were significant for DS, EL, KR and GY traits. The crosses were significant for all studied traits, except PH trait. Mean square due to lines were highly significant for all traits except PH, EH, and KR. Mean square due to testers were highly significant for EH and GY. Also, mean square attributed to lines x testers interaction were highly significant for all traits except for DS, PH, and RE. The interactions of locations (Loc) with crosses and Loc x lines were highly significant for the studied traits except for PH. The superior inbred line Ism 6007 had desirable general combining ability (GCA) effects for grain yield and yield components. Also, the inbred line Ism 7100 showed better GCA effects for PH, EH, ED, RE and GY traits and inbred line Ism 7094 for earliness and grain yield. The tester SC 128 showed the highest GCA effect for grain yield. The best crosses for specific combining ability (SCA) effects were Ism 6040 x SC 128, Ism 7094 x SC 128, Ism 7169 x SC 128, Ism 7186 x SC 131 and Ism 7259 x SC 131 for grain yield and cross Ism 6007 x SC 131 for earliness, grain yield, and yield components. The non-additive gene effects were more important in controlling all studied traits. Moreover, non-additive gene effects were more interacted by environmental conditions than additive gene effects for all studied traits. The highest mean values and significant of crosses for grain yield (GY) were obtained from the Ism 6040 x SC 128 (37.5 ard/fad.), Ism 6007 x SC 131 (37.0 ard/fad.), Ism 7169 x SC 128 (36.7 ard/fad.), and Ism 7094 x SC 128 (35.5 ard/fad.). These three ways crosses out yielding significant than the commercial hybrids TWC 321 (33.7 ard/fad.) and TWC 324 (32.5 ard/fed). These promising hybrids should be tested in advanced trails. Background: Quantitative traits are typically considered to be under additive genetic control. Although there are indications that non-additive factors have the potential to contribute to trait variation, experimental demonstration remains scarce. Here, we investigated the genetic basis of growth in Atlantic salmon by exploiting the high level of genetic diversity and trait expression among domesticated, hybrid and wild populations. Results: After rearing fish in common-garden experiments under aquaculture conditions, we performed a variance component analysis in four mapping populations totaling ~ 7000 individuals from six wild, two domesticated and three F1 wild/domesticated hybrid strains. Across the four independent datasets, genome-wide significant quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with weight and length were detected on a total of 18 chromosomes, reflecting the polygenic nature of growth. Significant QTLs correlated with both length and weight were detected on chromosomes 2, 6 and 9 in multiple datasets. Significantly, epistatic QTLs were detected in all datasets. Discussion: The observed interactions demonstrated that the phenotypic effect of inheriting an allele deviated between half-sib families. Gene-by-gene interactions were also suggested, where the combined effect of two loci resulted in a genetic effect upon phenotypic variance, while no genetic effect was detected when the two loci were considered separately. To our knowledge, this is the first documentation of epistasis in a quantitative trait in Atlantic salmon. These novel results are of relevance for breeding programs, and for predicting the evolutionary consequences of domestication-introgression in wild populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present investigation was carried out at Horticultural Research Station, Lam farm, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh during kharif, 2013-14 and 2014-15 to estimate the combining ability effects employing the line x tester mating design with nine lines and six testers. The analysis of variance revealed that significant differences among the parents and crosses for all the 12 characters studied. Six characters viz. fruit yield per plant, plant spread, days to 50% flowering, days to fruit maturity, number of fruits per plant and number of seeds per fruit were exhibited higher magnitude of sca variances than gca variances which revealed that non-additive gene action was played an important role in the inheritance of these trait. According to gca effects, the genotypes LCA-442, LCA-654, LCA-655, LCA-703-2 and LCA-453 found to be promising general combiners for yield and yield components. The sca effects revealed that nine crosses viz., LCA 466 x LCA 705-2, LCA 607 x LCA 703-2, LCA 355 x LCA 678, LCA 504 x LCA 705-2, LCA 446 x LCA 703-2, LCA 615 x LCA 453, LCA 442 x LCA 453, LCA 607 x G4 and LCA 654 x LCA were identified as promising hybrids for fruit yield and it’s yield component characters.

A field experiment was carried out with a view to estimate, combining ability and gene effects in brinjal (Solanum melongena L.). The experimental material comprised of 37 genotypes including 8 parents, 28 hybrids and one standard check (Surati Ravaiya) was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications at Regional Horticultural Research Station (R.H.R.S.), Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari, Gujarat during Rabi 2015-16. Combining ability analysis revealed that both additive as well as non-additive gene effects were important in the inheritance of all the traits studied. However, magnitude of variances due to sca was comparatively larger than those of gca for most of the economic traits indicated preponderance of non-additive gene action. Among the parents, JBGR-1, NSR-1 and JBL-08-8 were good general combiners for majority of the traits. The crosses viz., AB-09-1 × AB-12-10, AB-09-1 × AB-08-5, AB-08-5 × JBL-08-8 and GJB-3 × AB-12-10 showed higher order sca effects in addition to performance for fruit yield and its component characters.

An investigation was undertaken with a view to study the nature and magnitude of gene action for 10 quantitative traits among five crosses of brinjal through generation mean analysis. The study involved six generation viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 of five crosses derived from six diversified parents. The results indicated that the magnitude and type of gene effects differed for the same trait in different cross combinations. Therefore, for the improvement of particular trait, segregating generations of individual crosses should be handled according to the gene action involved in its inheritance. Additive [d], dominance [h], additive x additive, dominance x dominance gene actions were equally important for primary branches per plant, fruit breadth, fruit weight, yield per plant and seeds per fruit in most of the crosses. The complimentary type of epistasis was detected for inheritance of days to first flowering and days to first fruit picking in BNDT x PPC, number of fruits per plant in PPC x BB 64, yield per plant in N-1007 x BB-64 and KASARALI x PPC, while duplicate type of epistasis was important for inheritance of remaining traits in all the crosses except in BNDT x PPC.

Abstract: Humans are altering nutrient dynamics through myriad pathways globally. Concurrent with the addition of nutrients via municipal, industrial, and agricultural sources, widespread consumer exploitation is changing consumer‐mediated nutrient dynamics drastically. Thus, altered nutrient dynamics can occur through changes in the supply of multiple nutrients, as well as through changes in the sources of these nutrients. Seagrass ecosystems are heavily impacted by human activities, with highly altered nutrient dynamics from multiple causes. We simulate scenarios of altered nutrient supply and ratios, nitrogen:phosphorus (N:P), from two nutrient sources in seagrass ecosystems: anthropogenic fertilizer and fish excretion. In doing so we tested expectations rooted in ecological theory that suggest the importance of resource dynamics for predicting primary producer dynamics. Ecosystem functions were strongly altered by artificial fertilizer (e.g., seagrass growth increased by as much as 140%), whereas plant/algae community structure was most affected by fish‐mediated nutrients or the interaction of both treatments (e.g., evenness increased by ~140% under conditions of low fish nutrients and high anthropogenic nutrients). Interactions between the nutrient sources were found for only two of six response variables, and the ratio of nutrient supply was the best predictor for only one response. These findings show that seagrass structure and function are well predicted by supply of a single nutrient (either N or P). Importantly, no single nutrient best explained the majority of responses—measures of community structure were best explained by the primary limiting nutrient to this system (P), whereas measures of growth and density of the dominant producer in the system were best explained by N. Thus, while our findings support aspects of theoretical expectations, the complexity of producer community responses belies broad generalities, underscoring the need to manage for multiple simultaneous nutrients in these imperiled coastal ecosystems. Abstract: Aim: Ecological models that do not account for interactions among stressors, if interactions are important, could be inaccurate and lead to inefficient conservation strategies. Conversely, if interactions are not important (i.e., stressors operate largely independently), then actions concentrating on a stressor‐by‐stressor basis would be warranted. Here, we investigated whether interactions among multiple stressors affected widely used indices of freshwater macroinvertebrate biodiversity, which are sensitive to environmental change at management‐relevant scales (i.e., reaches and catchments). Location: State of Victoria, south‐eastern Australia. Methods: We used a 7,418‐sample dataset for stream macroinvertebrates from 2,165 sites distributed over 237,630 km2 for 20 years. We calculated the interactive effects on stream macroinvertebrates of stressors operating at different scales, namely vegetation loss at the catchment and reach scales and hydrological change and salinization at the local scale. The importance of interactions among multiple stressors was assessed by comparing the cross‐validated predictive performance of models with and without multiple stressor interaction terms. Results: Cross‐validated models explained 31%–63% of the variation in the macroinvertebrate responses. The most important stressors were catchment vegetation loss (the proportion of remaining native vegetation cover) and salinity. The inclusion of interaction terms did not increase cross‐validated predictive performance, which indicates that there was little evidence that interactions among stressors were important for explaining variation in commonly used freshwater macroinvertebrate condition indices. Main conclusions: Interactions among vegetation, salinity and hydrological change stressors may not always be of importance for determining patterns of stream macroinvertebrate biodiversity, so that such interactions may not necessarily be critical considerations for catchment and reach scale management, at least if based on these or comparable condition indices. The mitigation of the impacts of vegetation loss, salinization and hydrological change stressors one‐by‐one probably is sufficient to guide conservation activities and might be advantageous if socio‐political contexts make it difficult to address interactions among stressors. The aim of the current study was to estimate additive and dominance genetic variance components for days from calving to first service (DFS), a number of services to conception (NSC) and days open (DO). Data consisted of 25 518 fertility records from first parity dairy cows collected from 15 large Holstein herds of Iran. To estimate the variance components, two models, one including only additive genetic effects and another fitting both additive and dominance genetic effects together, were used. The additive and dominance relationship matrices were constructed using pedigree data. The estimated heritability for DFS, NSC and DO were 0.068, 0.035 and 0.067, respectively. The differences between estimated heritability using the additive genetic and additive-dominance genetic models were negligible regardless of the trait under study. The estimated dominance variance was larger than the estimated additive genetic variance. The ratio of dominance variance to phenotypic variance was 0.260, 0.231 and 0.196 for DFS, NSC and DO, respectively. Akaike's information criteria indicated that the model fitting both additive and dominance genetic effects is the best model for analysing DFS, NSC and DO. Spearman's rank correlations between the predicted breeding values (BV) from additive and additive-dominance models were high (0.99). Therefore, ranking of the animals based on predicted BVs was the same in both models. The results of the current study confirmed the importance of taking dominance variance into account in the genetic evaluation of dairy cows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because of essential economic and ecological concerns, there is increased interest worldwide in developing wheat cultivars that are more efficient in utilizing nitrogen (N) and better suited to N limitations. The objective of the present investigation was to get information on the type of gene action controlling the inheritance of wheat low-N tolerance traits in order to start a breeding program for improving such traits. Six parents of contrasting low-N tolerance were crossed in a diallel fashion. Evaluation of 6 parents, 15 F1crosses and 15 F2 crosses was done using a randomized complete block design with three replications under two levels of soil N, i.e. low-N (0 kg N/ha) and high-N (180 kg N/ha).The magnitude of dominance variance inF2's for all studied traits was much greater than that of additive variance under both high N and low N, suggesting that selection should be postponed to later segregating generations in order to eliminate masking effects of dominance variance and take advantage of the additive variance for the improvement of nitrogen use efficiency and grain yield traits. Narrow-sense heritability (h2n) in F2's was generally of higher magnitude under low-N than high-N, suggesting that it is better to practice selection for studied nitrogen efficiency and grain yield traits under low-N conditions to obtain higher values of selection gain.

The idea of synergistic interactions between drugs and chemicals has been an important issue in the biomedical world for over a century. As complex diseases, especially cancer, are being treated with various drug cocktails, understanding the interactions among these drugs is increasingly vital to ensuring successful treatment regimens. However, the idea of synergy is not limited to only the biomedical realm and these ideas have developed across many different disciplines, as well. In this review, we first discuss the various terminology surrounding the idea of synergy, providing a comprehensive list of terms defined across numerous disciplines. We then review the most common methodology for detection and quantification of synergy, including the two most prominent reference models for describing additive interactions: Loewe Additivity and Bliss Independence. We also discuss advantages and limitations to each method, with a focus on the Chou-Talalay Combination Index method. Finally, we describe how methods development and terminology have developed among disciplines outside of biomedicine and pharmacology, to synthesize the literature for readers.

Enzymes with a high selectivity are desirable for improving economics of chemical synthesis of enantiopure compounds. To improve enzyme selectivity mutations are often introduced near the catalytic active site. In this compact environment epistatic interactions between residues, where contributions to selectivity are non-additive, play a significant role in determining the degree of selectivity. Using support vector machine regression models we map mutations to the experimentally characterised enantioselectivities for a set of 136 variants of the epoxide hydrolase from the fungus Aspergillus niger ( AnEH). We investigate whether the influence a mutation has on enzyme selectivity can be accurately predicted through linear models, and whether prediction accuracy can be improved using higher-order counterparts. Comparing linear and polynomial degree = 2 models, mean Pearson coefficients ( r) from $$50\,{\times }\,5$$ -fold cross-validation increase from 0.84 to 0.91 respectively. Equivalent models tested on interaction-minimised sequences achieve values of $$r=0.90$$ and $$r=0.93$$ . As expected, testing on a simulated control data set with no interactions results in no significant improvements from higher-order models. Additional experimentally derived AnEH mutants are tested with linear and polynomial degree = 2 models, with values increasing from $$r=0.51$$ to $$r=0.87$$ respectively. The study demonstrates that linear models perform well, however the representation of epistatic interactions in predictive models improves identification of selectivity-enhancing mutations. The number one goal of most rice improvement programmes around the world is breeding for high potential to take care of the increasing consumption of rice. The objective of this experiment was to study the inheritance of yield and yield components and to estimate the heritabilities of important quantitative traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Six generations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, BCP1 and BCP2 of a cross between IET6279 and IR70445-146-3-3 were used for the study. Generation mean analysis suggested that additive effects had a major role for the expression of plant height, number of panicles, number of spikelets per panicle, percentage spikelets fertility per plant and grain yield per plant, which further suggested that phenotypic selection was possible at an early stage. Both additive and non-additive gene actions were important for the expression of number of fertile spikelets per panicle and 100-grain weight. Therefore, selection for these characters would be fruitful, if delayed till epistasis effects are reduced to a minimum. High broad sense heritability estimates were observed for characters viz. plant height and 100-grain weight, suggesting that the characters under study are less influenced by environment in their expression. Thus, selection based on phenotypic value of these characters would be reliable and effective. Low estimates of broad sense heritability were observed for number of panicles per plant, number of spikelets per panicle, number of fertile spikelets per panicle, percentage spikelets fertility per plant and grain yield per plant, indicating that influence of the environment was high for these characters. An experiment was carried out in blackgram using line x tester mating design to estimate the gca effect of parents (six lines and five testers) and sca effect of 30 hybrids for yield and its traits. Estimates of gca and sca variances, degree of dominance, predictability ratio and narrow sense heritability revealed that only three trais viz, pods per plant, seeds per pod and single plant yield were controlled by additive gene action and hence showed high narrow sense heritability. Magnitude of non-additive gene action was higher than the additive gene action for traits like plant height, days to 50% flowering, cluster per plant, 100 seed weight, days to maturity, branches per plant and pod length. Three parents 'MDU1, ADT3 and LBG-752 were the best combiners and three crosses 'MDU 1 x VBN (Bg) 6, LBG-752 x VBN (Bg) 6, LBG-752 x Mash-114 showed high per se performance and significant positive sca for yield. The idea of synergistic interactions between drugs and chemicals has been an important issue in the biomedical world for over a century. As complex diseases, especially cancer, are being treated with various drug cocktails, understanding the interactions among these drugs is increasingly vital to ensuring successful treatment regimens. However, the idea of synergy is not limited to only the biomedical realm and these ideas have developed across many different disciplines, as well. In this review, we first discuss the various terminology surrounding the idea of synergy, providing a comprehensive list of terms defined across numerous disciplines. We then review the most commonmethodology for detection and quantification of synergy, including the two most prominent reference models for describing additive interactions: Loewe Additivity and Bliss Independence. We also discuss advantages and limitations to each method, with a focus on the Chou-Talalay Combination Index method. Finally, we describe how methods development and terminology have developed among disciplines outside of biomedicine and pharmacology, to synthesize the literature for readers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
