13. Density predictive model for an outbreak in adult female Aedes albopictus(Diptera: Culicidae) in Japan

Abstract

We developed a predictive model for activities and outbreaks of female Aedes albopictusSkuse, using meteorological data. The number of Ae. albopictuscollected from human bait-sweep net collection (h-BNC) surveillance, conducted by the local government between 2010 and 2019 in Japan, was adopted as a mosquito-activity indicator. The best model was composed of the backward cumulative and backward moving mean of meteorological data (parameters that were measured daily include mean, maximum, and minimum temperature, mean humidity, amount of precipitation, maximum wind speed, and sunshine hours). The root mean squared error (RMSE) and the coefficient of determination (R2) of the best model for the test set, which was not included in the training dataset, were 1.33 and 0.74, respectively. The best model was applied to predict the number of Ae. albopictusobtained from our own h-BNC surveillance in Okazaki City, Japan. RMSE and R2of the results were 1.17 and 0.92, respectively. The present model, using publicly available meteorological values, can predict the collection number of adult Ae. albopictususing h-BNC surveillance thereby providing information to control mosquito activities and outbreaks. Therefore, it may be possible to mitigate the risk of mosquito-borne infections and secondary adverse effects of mosquito bites, such as infectious impetigo and deterioration of the quality of life.

15. Effect of products of low temperature oxidation reaction on NOx reduction in HC-SCR system.

Abstract

Fuel reforming technology using a low temperature oxidation reaction was applied to improvement of NOx reduction efficiency of hydrocarbons selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR) system, which does not require urea. The low temperature oxidation reaction of hydrocarbons produces oxygenated hydrocarbons which has high NOx reduction ability such as aldehydes. A pre-evaporation and premixing-type fuel reformer was developed in order to generate uniform fuel/air premixed gas. To prevent from hot-flame ignition, the reaction chamber of the fuel reformer has a high surface/volume ratio and the wall temperature of the reaction chamber was controlled. As a fundamental study, NOx reduction experiments and elementary reaction calculation were carried out to investigate the suitable fuel reformer temperature and reforming equivalence ratio for the promotion of NOx reduction on the surface of the catalyst. It was found that the reforming fuel gas has a higher NOx reduction efficiency than the fuel vapor in the catalyst temperature range from 473 to 773 K. The NOx reduction efficiency was highest at the reforming temperature of 673 K. The NOx reduction efficiency at the catalyst temperature of 723 K increases with the increase in the reforming equivalence ratio. It was suggested that alcohols predominantly affect NOx reduction reaction at low catalyst temperatures, and aldehydes at high catalyst temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

21. Application of magneto-impedance (MI) sensor to geomagnetic field measurements for magnetoseismology

Abstract

Magneto-impedance (MI) effect was discovered about 30 years ago and a micro-size magnetic sensor that utilizes this effect becomes commercially available. Nosé et al. (2022, doi: 10.1029/2022JA030809) made some modifications to the commercially available MI sensors to cover the dynamic range of the geomagnetic field. For the period of March 30 to April 27, 2018, they conducted experimental observations of geomagnetic field variations with the MI sensors at the Mineyama observatory in Japan. Data obtained with the MI sensors are compared with those from the fluxgate magnetometer (FGM) that has been working at the observatory. Results showed that the MI sensors can record geomagnetic field variations such as geomagnetic storms, Sq variations, low-latitude positive bays, SSC, and geomagnetic pulsations with a peak-to-peak amplitude of £ 1 nT that are also detected with the FGM. This study revealed that the MI sensor can measure the geomagnetic field variations in a period from a few tens of seconds to a few hours.Using MI sensors, Raspberry Pi, low-cost 24-bit A/D converters, and stable power supply circuits, we developed a magnetometer with approximately $4,000, which is named MIM-Pi (MI sensor Magnetometer with Raspberry Pi). Because of its low cost, MIM-Pi provides an opportunity to construct a dense observation network of geomagnetic field. We are now deploying MIM-Pi in Kanto-Tohoku area. When we apply the magnetoseismology method to the data from such dense observation network, it will be possible to monitor fine structures of the plasma mass density distribution in the inner magnetosphere., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

30. Analysis of spatial-temporal dynamics of cool flame oscillation phenomenon occurred around a fuel droplet array by using variational auto-encoder.

Abstract

Cool flame oscillation of a fuel droplet array in high-temperature air was numerically simulated by using a droplet vaporization/spontaneous ignition numerical model. The time series data of temperature and chemical species spatial distributions were obtained. The data were used to train a Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) that reduces the dimension of the data. The cool flame oscillation phenomenon was mapped as the trajectory onto a phase plane spanned by two latent variables obtained by the VAE. The oscillation phenomenon was investigated by using the distribution patterns derived by the VAE that distinguishes the temperature and the species states. Proper orthogonal decomposition was carried out on the decoder output of the VAE. The oscillation mechanism was investigated by the spatial eigenfunctions (mode maps). The temporal eigenfunctions of the three dominant modes were shown onto the trajectory of the plane. The correlation among physical variable distributions was evaluated to investigate the cool flame dynamics. From the above investigation, the plane was confirmed to distinguish the physical states, for the trajectory did not intersect during the oscillation. The plane was treated as a state space. The physical phenomena associated with each mode were identified from the mode maps and the temporal eigenfunctions. The phase in which the associated phenomenon arises was identified by checking the temporal eigenfunctions along with the trajectory.
