Data feminism, a way of thinking about and “doing” data utilizing feminist tools and perspectives, has emerged in recent years as a part of a critical discourse surrounding datafication. The aim of this study is to analyze and identify shared perceptions of big data as expressed in a corpus of scholarly writings published in the domain of data studies and data feminism. We analyzed a set of 44 scholarly texts engaging in feminism concerned with the concept of big data. For the purpose of this article, we refer to this set of texts as data feminism and examine how authors frame and describe big data. We compare future visions in data feminist material with policies by the European Commission and explore what tensions arise among them. Furthermore, we explore and delineate social and political alternatives that emerge from data feminist texts. Both corpora describe futures inclusive of big data and imagine possible positive outcomes from different perspectives and with different ideas of the current role of big data. We found that sociotechnical imaginaries of big data within the data feminist corpus are considerably richer and more nuanced than those of the European Commission. In the data feminist corpus, big data is described as a multiplicity of things and often implicated in perpetuating power imbalances and large societal issues. The European Commission corpus employs the perspective of “data as a resource” to be exploited.

In this conceptual paper theory of infrastructure is combined with one of situated learning, with a focus on search and search engines. The aim of the paper is to make a theoretical contribution to the information literacy research field by discussing theoretical contradictions as well as strengths when combining the two theoretical perspectives. Search engines and their use are part of the contemporary information infrastructure and are a such often not thought of when being used. It is argued that a critical perspective on information literacy in relation to search seems to demand that they are treated as situated and general at the same time. The paper concludes that sociomaterial perspectives on information literacy research offers both infrastructures and practices a place.

This paper reports a study of pupils’ experiences of media and information literacy education in five Swedish schools by answering the following overarching question, what roles do the teaching of information seeking and critical assessment of information play for pupils in their school-work as well as in their everyday life? Pupils in ninth grade were asked to fill in a questionnaire regarding their use of digital technology as well as their thoughts on media and information literacy education. The study shows that many pupils are knowledgeable about the terms of production pertaining to content in most online sources they mention. Still, infrastructural meaning-making that take into consideration issues of personalization, data integrity and surveillance, are largely lacking. The study also shows that the school’s teaching is central to the pupils’ development of a critical stance towards the information that they encounter online. These findings underline the importance of how schools choose to treat media and information literacy education. It is concerning then that infrastructural meaning-making is quite absent in the pupils’ responses.

Purpose – A multitude of transparency movements have been developed and grown strong in recentdecades. The study focuses on the implications of affordances identified in Google Apps for Education (GAFE), by strategic staff within a Swedish school organisation, with responsibility for schools in around 30 municipalities. A complex picture emerged, where GAFE was perceived both as a neutral, well-functioning tool and as a means of educating in partly new ways. Furthermore, the study shows that GAFE, despite its characteristic of being a non-generative appliance, still can be used in creative ways. The implementation of cloud technology, such as GAFE, endorses a tunnel-vision affordance that downgrades more nuanced perceptions of the different technological, economical, and ethical aspects of the technology. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate concepts that are used in depicting futurevisions of society, as afforded by technology, to map the extent of their use, examine the level of theirdominance in different research areas and geographic boundaries, identify potential overlaps, analysetheir longitudinal growth, and examine whether any of the identified concepts has assumed anoverarching position.Design/methodology/approach – In total, 14 concepts, each of which is used to depict visions offuture information infrastructures, were identified. More than 20,000 scholarly documents relatedto 11 of these concepts (those with 20 or more documents) are analysed by various qualitative/quantitative methods.Findings – The concepts most referred to are Semantic Web and ubiquitous computing(all years), and “internet of things” (Year 2013). Publications on some newer concepts (e.g. “digital living”,“real world internet”) are minimal. There are variations in the extent of use and preferred concepts basedon geographic and disciplinary boundaries. The overlap in the use of these terms is minimal and none ofthese terms has assumed an overarching umbrella position.Research limitations/implications – This study is limited to scholarly publications; itwould be relevant to also study the pattern of usage in governmental communications and policydocuments.Social implications – By mapping multiplicity of concepts and the dispersion of discussions, theauthors highlight the need for, and facilitate, a broader discussion of related social and societalimplications.Originality/value – This paper is the first to present a collective of these related concepts and mapthe pattern of their occurrence and growth.Keywords Internet, Information science, World Wide Web, Information society,Digital communications, Information strategyPaper type General review

The current text is intended as reflection on the introduction of sustainability into the University of Borås. Furthermore, the aim is to create a resource for discussion, promotion of community values as well as tools for understanding, clarifying and extending sustainability practices within the institution of the University. Following the managerial model of the sustainable university, the aim is to formulate a specific vision and accompanying mission of sustainable university. The vision is articulated in chapter 3 and 4 in terms of three models (managerial, community and research centric) and three concepts (sustainability research, sustainability issues and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)). In chapter 5, the mission statement of the University of Borås is elaborated given the vision of the sustainable university. Chapter 6 introduces a specific problem called the integration paradox: that sophisticated integration of sustainable development into all practices often leads to less clarity, visibility and accountability. This also appears as a problem regarding the mission statement and this is further developed in chapter 7. Three strategies are developed in order to deal with the paradox. First, SDGs and what we call the “meta-question of sustainability research” are discussed in chapter 8. The third strategy, sustainability issues, is focused in chapter 9 and 10. Here, sustainability issues are utilized in order to connect university-based expertise with local and global needs, the latter expressed as SDGs. In chapter 11, three strategies currently in use for integrating sustainability into education are presented and discussed: use of SDGs, community oriented activities aimed at raising appreciation/awareness and certification of courses. Chapter 12 deals with ongoing work related to the information management system ISO 14001. Chapter 13 discusses a particular example of an outreach program and positions this in the context of transdisciplinary researc
