Introduction: One of the significant threats to aquatic ecosystems is introducing non-native species in natural environments. This represents one of the principal causes of biodiversity loss in the world. Pangasianodon hypophthalmus is an introduced species in Colombia that shares life characteristics and habitat with endangered native species, such as Ageneiosus pardalis, Sorubim cuspicaudus, and Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum. However, its distribution is little-known, and scientists have barely explored the effects on the native fauna. Objectives: To evaluate the P. hypophthalmus invasive potential in some of the Colombian basins, which drain into the Caribbean Sea. Methods: Using records available in various databases, we performed a niche conservatism analysis between the native and introduced records of P. hypophthalmus using the R package Ecospat. Subsequently, we modeled the potential invasion area of P. hypophthalmus and the distribution areas of three native species, performing ecological niche modeling (ENM) using the Maxent algorithm. Finally, we calculated a geographic niche overlap between the non-native and native species. Results: The Ecospat spatial analysis indicated that P. hypophthalmus retains some environmental niche attributes through space. For this reason, we can use ENM as an approximation to its range of distribution in the invaded area. Our results using ENM demonstrated that the four species analyzed prefer low and slightly rocky regions; therefore, the geographical overlap of the three native species’ ecological niches and the introduced species exceed 80 %. Conclusions: There are adequate conditions in the study basins to fully establish the species P. hypophthalmus, representing a high risk for aquatic ecosystems and native ichthyofauna. Knowledge of the potential distribution areas is essential to implement control of the species. Resumen Introducción: Una de las amenazas importantes para los ecosistemas acuáticos es la introducción de las especies no nativas en ambientes naturales. Esto representa una de las principales causas de pérdida de biodiversidad en el mundo. Pangasianodon hypophthalmus es una especie introducida en Colombia que comparte características de vida y hábitat con especies nativas en peligro de extinción como: Ageneiosus pardalis, Sorubim cuspicaudus y Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum. Sin embargo, poco se conoce de su distribución y los efectos en la fauna nativa han sido poco explorados. Objetivo: Evaluar el potencial invasivo de P. hypophthalmus en algunas de las cuencas colombianas que desembocan en el Mar Caribe. Métodos: Utilizando registros disponibles en varias bases de datos, realizamos un análisis de conservadurismo de nicho entre los registros nativos e introducidos de P. hypophthalmus usando el paquete de R Ecospat. Posteriormente, modelamos el área potencial de invasión de P. hypophthalmus y las áreas de distribución de tres especies nativas realizando modelos de nicho ecológico (MNE) utilizando el algoritmo de Maxent. Finalmente, calculamos una superposición de nicho geográfico entre las especies nativas y no nativas. Resultados: El análisis espacial de Ecospat indica que P. hypophthalmus conserva algunos atributos del nicho ambiental a través del espacio. Por esta razón, podemos usar los MNE como una aproximación a su rango de distribución en el área invadida. Nuestros resultados usando MNE demostraron que las cuatro especies analizadas prefieren regiones bajas y ligeramente rocosas; por ello, la superposición geográfica de los nichos ecológicos de las tres especies nativas y la especie introducidas superan el 80 %. Conclusiones: Existen condiciones adecuadas en las cuencas de estudio para el establecimiento completo de la especie P. hypophthalmus, lo que representa un alto riesgo para los ecosistemas acuáticos y la ictiofauna nativa. El conocimiento de las áreas de distribución potencial es fundamental para implementar controles sobre la especie.

Introducción: Una de las grandes amenazas a los ecosistemas acuáticos es la introducción de especies foráneas en los ambientes naturales, lo que representa una de las principales causas de pérdida de biodiversidad en el mundo. P. hypophthalmus es una especie introducida en Colombia que comparte características de vida y hábitat con especies nativas como A. pardalis, S. cuspicaudus y P. magdaleniatum, sin embargo, su distribución es poco conocida y los efectos que tiene sobre la fauna nativa son poco explorados. Objetivos: Evaluar el potencial invasivo de P. hypophthalmus en algunas de las cuencas de la vertiente al Mar Caribe. Métodos: Utilizando registros disponibles en bases de datos, realizamos un análisis de conservadurismo de nicho entre el rango nativo e introducido de P. hypophthalmus en el programa Ecospat. Posteriormente, el área potencial de invasión de la especie no nativa y las áreas de distribución de las tres especies nativas se modelaron utilizando el algoritmo de Maxent en el programa R. Finalmente, se realizó una sobreposición de nicho geográfico entre el área de invasión potencial de la especie no nativa y el área de distribución de las especies nativas. Resultados: El análisis espacial de nicho indica que la especie no nativa presenta conservadurismo de nicho, por lo que la proyección de MNE para estimar el área de invasión es posible. Los MNE demuestran las cuatro especies analizadas prefieren zonas bajas y poco rocosas. Finalmente, la sobreposición geográfica de los nichos ecológicos de las tres especies nativas y la especie introducida arrojan valores que superan el 80 %. Conclusiones: La especie P. hypophthalmus tiene las condiciones adecuadas en las cuencas de estudio para un establecimiento pleno, además, supone un alto riesgo para los ecosistemas acuáticos y la ictiofauna nativa siendo esto fundamental para implementar control de la especie.

The Mammalogy collection of the Universidad de Nariño (Colección Zoológica P.S.O-Z) contains 926 specimens belonging to 10 orders, 25 families (23 native and two exotic), 75 genera (73 native and two exotic), and 119 native species (two exotic). The specimens come from five departments in the country, with a larger representation from Nariño and Putumayo. Approximately 405 of the specimens in the collection were donated by the Fundación para la Educación Superior (FES), from the Natural Reverse La Planada (Municipally of Ricaurte, Nariño), and other specimens have been collected by students from the University of Nariño. The specimens were cited in at least 22 scientific publications., La Colección Mastozoológica de la Universidad de Nariño (Colección Zoológica P.S.O-CZ) conserva 926 especímenes de mamíferos pertenecientes a 10 órdenes, 25 familias (23 nativas y dos exóticas), 75 géneros (73 nativos y dos exóticos) y 119 especies nativas, más dos exóticas. Los especímenes proceden de cinco departamentos del país, con una mayor representación de Nariño y Putumayo. Aproximadamente 405 especímenes fueron donados por la Fundación para la Educación Superior (FES), provenientes de la Reserva Natural La Planada (Municipio de Ricaurte, Nariño) y otros especímenes que han sido colectados por estudiantes de la Universidad de Nariño. Los ejemplares de la colección han sido referenciados en al menos 22 publicaciones científicas.

The fauna of the Amazon slope is one of the most diverse in the world (Gentry, 1990; Patterson et al., 2006), characterized mainly by restricted and endemic species (Hernández et al., 1992; Kattan et al., 2004). In southwestern Colombia, the Amazon Biogeographic Province converges with the Norandina Biogeographic Province in the so-called Andean-Amazonian foothills, structuring an area of high diversity, but also with great conservation problems (Hernández et al., 1992). One of the species that faces negative impacts on its populations in the Andean-Amazonian Foothills, as well as in other regions of the Neotropics is the tropical otter or river wolf (Lontra longicaudis Olfers 1818) (Trujillo and Arcila, 2006), considered as not Common and very sensitive to environmental changes, hunting pressure for the value of its skin has been one of the activities with the greatest impact on the species (Tirira, 2007)., La fauna de la vertiente Amazónica es de las más diversas del mundo (Gentry, 1990; Patterson et al., 2006), caracterizada principalmente por especies restringidas y endémicas (Hernández et al., 1992; Kattan et al., 2004). En el suroccidente Colombiano la Provincia Biogeográfica Amazonía confluye con la Provincia Biogeográfica Norandina en el denominado piedemonte Andino-Amazónico, estructurando un área de alta diversidad, pero también con grandes problemas de conservación (Hernández et al., 1992). Una de las especies que enfrenta impactos negativos sobre sus poblaciones en el Piedemonte Andino-Amazónico, así como en otras regiones del Neotrópico es la nutria tropical o lobito de río (Lontra longicaudis Olfers 1818) (Trujillo y Arcila, 2006),considerada como no común y muy sensible a cambios ambientales, la presión de caza por el valor de su piel ha sido una de las actividades de mayor impacto sobre la especie (Tirira, 2007).

La identificación de las áreas de endemismo es un paso fundamental en los análisis de biogeografía evolutiva. Las áreas de endemismo han sido definidas por la congruencia de dos o más áreas de distribución, en donde se asume de manera general que los taxones endémicos tienen una respuesta geográfica similar a factores históricos y ambientales. Los mamíferos tienen alta diversidad en el Neotrópico y muchos de ellos han evolucionado en conjunto con esta región biogeográfica. Sin embargo, hay pocas hipótesis de áreas de endemismo que puedan ser relacionadas con la evolución de los mamíferos en el Neotrópico. En este estudio se identificaron las áreas de endemismo de los mamíferos neotropicales a partir del análisis de una matriz de 2052 taxones (familias, géneros y especies). Para ello se aplicó una búsqueda de áreas de endemismo con el método de Análisis de Endemicidad a una cuadrícula de 2° latitud-longitud. Se identificaron 101 áreas de endemismo y 498 taxones endémicos, las áreas coincidieron parcialmente con 65 patrones biogeográficos identificados por otros autores. La región Neotropical está compuesta por nueve áreas de endemismo y mostró múltiples límites, que sugieren un patrón dinámico. Se identificaron dos áreas complejas de intercambio biótico que coincidieron con las zonas de transición Mexicana y Sudamericana. La congruencia de las áreas de endemismo de mamíferos con otros esquemas biogeográficos sugiere que estas áreas han sido formadas tanto por factores históricos como ecológicos. Por otra parte, las incongruencias de las áreas de endemismo soportan un sistema biogeográfico no jerarquizado. The identification of areas of endemism is an essential step in analyses of evolutionary biogeography. Areas of endemism have been defined by the congruency of two or more distributional areas, where there is a general assumption that the endemic taxa have a similar geographic response to historical and environmental factors. Mammals are highly diverse in the Neotropics, and most of them have evolved together with that biogeographical region. However, there are few hypotheses of areas of endemism that may be related with the evolution of the mammals in the Neotropics. We analyzed a matrix of 2052 taxa (families, genera and species) to identify the areas of endemism of the Neotropical mammals. The search of areas of endemism was performed using the Analysis of Endemicity method in a grid of 2° latitude -longitude. The analysis resulted in 101 areas and 498 endemic taxa, the areas partially matched with 65 biogeographical patterns previously identified by other authors. The Neotropical region is composed of nine areas of endemism and showed multiples boundaries, these characteristics suggest a dynamic pattern. Two complex areas of biotic interchange corresponded with the Mexican and Southamerican transitional zones. On one side, the congruence of areas of endemism of mammals with other biogeographical patterns suggests that historical and ecological factors have shaped the structure of those areas. On the other side, the incongruence of some areas of endemism supports a biogeographical system without hierarchy.
