In particular, we study obstructions to these properties through geometric characterizations, tangle sums and colorings. We show the existence of an infinite collection of hyperbolic knots where each of which has in its exterior meridional essential planar surfaces of arbitrarily large number of boundary components, or, equivalently, that each of these knots has essential tangle decompositions of arbitrarily large number of strings. Moreover, each of these knots has in its exterior meridional essential surfaces of any positive genus and (even) number of boundary components. We prove that the tunnel number of a satellite chain link with a number of components higher than or equal to twice the bridge number of the companion is as small as possible among links with the same number of components. In this work, we introduce a new graph convexity, that we call Cycle Convexity, motivated by related notions in Knot Theory. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, define the interval function in the Cycle Convexity as $I_{cc}(S) = S\cup \{v\in V(G)\mid \text{there is a cycle }C\text{ in }G\text{ such that } V(C)\setminus S=\{v\}\}$, for every $S\subseteq V(G)$. We say that $S\subseteq V(G)$ is convex if $I_{cc}(S)=S$. The convex hull of $S\subseteq V(G)$, denoted by $Hull(S)$, is the inclusion-wise minimal convex set $S'$ such that $S\subseteq S'$. A set $S\subseteq V(G)$ is called a hull set if $Hull(S)=V(G)$. The hull number of $G$ in the cycle convexity, denoted by $hn_{cc}(G)$, is the cardinality of a smallest hull set of $G$. We first present the motivation for introducing such convexity and the study of its related hull number. Then, we prove that: the hull number of a 4-regular planar graph is at most half of its vertices; computing the hull number of a planar graph is an $NP$-complete problem; computing the hull humber of chordal graphs, $P_4$-sparse graphs and grids can be done in polynomial time.

After their re-emergence in the last decades, dengue fever and other vector-borne diseases are a potential threat to the lives of millions of people. Based on a data set of dengue cases in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza, collected from 2011 to 2016, we study the spatio-temporal characteristics of dengue outbreaks to characterize epidemic and non-epidemic years. First, we identify regions that show a high prevalence of dengue cases and mosquito larvae in different years and also analyze their corresponding correlations. Our results show that the characteristic correlation length of the epidemic is of the order of the system size, suggesting that factors such as citizen mobility may play a major role as a drive for spatial spreading of vector-borne diseases. Inspired by this observation, we perform a mean-field estimation of the basic reproduction number and find that our estimated values agree well with the values reported for other regions, pointing towards similar underlying spreading mechanisms. These findings provide insights into the spreading characteristics of dengue in densely populated areas and should be of relevance for the design of improved disease containment strategies., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

We study the existence of incompressible embeddings of surfaces into the genus two handlebody. We show that for every compact surface with boundary, orientable or not, there is an incompressible embedding of the surface into the genus two handlebody. In the orientable case the embedding can be either separating or non-separating. We also consider the case in which the genus two handlebody is replaced by an orientable 3-manifold with a compressible boundary component of genus greater than or equal to two., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures
