Abstract

The aim of this retrospective and prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of the authors' newly devised lithotomic position (NDLP) for use during surgery to prevent intraoperative calf vein thrombosis (CVT).From their concern about development of CVT during rectal cancer surgery, they reviewed 84 patients who were operated on in a traditional lithotomic position (TLP) retrospectively and examined prospectively 102 patients operated on in an NDLP.In the TLP group, 8 patients (9.5%) developed CVT; however, none of the NDLP group suffered from CVT, the difference being significant (P<0.01).From this study, the effectiveness and usefulness of the NDLP are strongly empha sized to prevent intraoperative CVT during rectal cancer surgery.
