The great majority of plants gain access to soil nutrients and enhance their performance under stressful conditions through symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The benefits that AMF confer vary among species and taxonomic groups. However, a comparative analysis of the different benefits among AMF has not yet been performed. We conducted a global meta-analysis of recent studies testing the benefits of individual AMF species and main taxonomic groups in terms of plant performance (growth and nutrition). Separately, we examined AMF benefits to plants facing biotic (pathogens, parasites, and herbivores) and abiotic (drought, salinity, and heavy metals) stress. AMF had stronger positive effects on phosphorus nutrition than on plant growth and nitrogen nutrition and the effects on the growth of plants facing biotic and abiotic stresses were similarly positive. While the AMF taxonomic groups showed positive effects on plant performance either with or without stress, Diversisporales were the most beneficial to plants without stress and Gigasporales to plants facing biotic stress. Our results provide a comprehensive analysis of the benefits of different AMF species and taxonomic groups on plant performance and useful insights for their management and use as bio-inoculants for agriculture and restoration.

Soil use and management modify mycorrhizal interactions, but how these changes affect the growth and nutrition of crops under different contexts has been poorly studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) spore communities belonging to two no-till cropping systems (soybean monoculture and soybean-maize rotation), and uncultivated grasslands replicated at four locations along a regional geographic gradient on soybean mycorrhizal colonization and performance. At a regional scale, AMF spore richness was higher in uncultivated grasslands, intermediate in crop rotations, and lower in monocultures. Arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization in soybean roots was also higher in uncultivated soils but did not differ between no-tillage systems. Soybean growth was positively affected by AMF from uncultivated grasslands in comparison to control without AMF. Instead, there were no significant effects of AMF from no-till cropping systems. Foliar P concentration was lower in monocultures irrespective of AMF. At the local scale, patterns were highly variable and differed between locations. These results highlight the importance of scales for management decisions in agriculture and add further support for the context-dependent nature of mycorrhizal interactions. Two main soil management practices are generally used for soybean production: monoculture (MC) and crop rotation (CR). These strategies have different impacts on soil microbial communities. Among them, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are well known to provide access to nutrients in a majority of cultivated plants. AMF communities have been shown to be more diverse in CR than in MC. Because AMF species differ in their effects on nutrition and development of plants, it could be expected that soil biota from different soil management practices affect soybean yield and quality. Therefore the objective of this study was to examine the combined effects of soil microbial communities and soil management practices (MC and CR) on yield, protein content, and oil quality of soybean grown under greenhouse conditions. The effects of three soil treatments, namely: sterile (S); microorganisms without AMF (MO); and microorganisms with AMF (AMF) were evaluated. These treatments were applied to soils from two crop management practices (CR and MC). Sterile soil promoted lower numbers of pods and seed weight per plant in MC but not in CR. AMF showed increased seed protein content (12?14%) whereas MO presented increased oil concentration (20?27%) (mainly within CR). Soybean grown with AMF from CR soil showed significantly higher amounts of oleic acid (21?25%), and lower linoleic acid (9%) when compared with other treatments. Findings from this study suggest that soybean yield and quality are affected by crop management practices and soil biota composition. Las invasiones biológicas representan una gran amenaza para la biodiversidad y la integridad de los ecosistemas dado que alteran las comunidades bióticas. Entre las comunidades bióticas del suelo se destacan los hongos micorrícicos arbusculares (HMA), que establecen asociaciones simbióticas con la mayoría de las plantas terrestres. Las especies de HMA no responden del mismo modo a los cambios ambientales, por lo que se propuso la existencia de grupos de especies de HMA con estrategias ecológicas compartidas (ruderales, competidoras y estrés tolerantes). Las plantas invasoras son capaces de alterar las comunidades de HMA para su propio beneficio. Este podría ser el caso del ?siempreverde? (Ligustrum lucidum), un árbol asiático que invade numerosos sectores de la Argentina y forma, en algunas zonas, bosques monoespecíficos densos. En este estudio se compararon las comunidades de esporas de HMA entre bosques monoespecíficos de siempreverde y bosques chaqueños serranos nativos. Se seleccionaron 6 áreas con ambos tipos de bosque. De cada área se tomaron muestras de suelo, a las que se les midieron características físico-químicas y se les extrajeron las esporas de HMA. De acuerdo con lo esperado, la composición de las comunidades de esporas de estos bosques monoespecíficos fue diferente a la presente en suelos de bosques nativos. La riqueza de morfoespecies de esporas de HMA no mostró diferencias entre ambos tipos de bosque, pero la abundancia total fue mayor en los suelos de bosque de siempreverde, que presentan un mayor número de esporas de especies ruderales. Este estudio provee evidencia que sugiere que la expansión del siempreverde altera las comunidades de esporas de HMA y algunas propiedades químicas del suelo. Here, we compare arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) communities and fatty acids in soils under different no-till (NT) agricultural managements over two seasons in two consecutive years. Two NT practices with different agricultural managements were compared: crop rotation (CR) and soya bean monoculture (MC). Soils of natural grasslands (NGs) were used as a reference. Treatments were tested along a regional gradient (four geographical locations) across a 400-km transect of the Argentinean Pampas. We identified 46 morphospecies. Several morphospecies occurred abundantly at all soils; others appeared to be restricted to specific situations. At the regional scale, CR maintained the same richness levels of AMF spores, whereas MC showed less richness, when compared with the NG. Although AMF spore density was clearly affected by cropping practices in the four locations, we could observe some changes in AMF species richness, and similar diversity under agricultural and natural soils. Fatty acid concentrations (whole-cell, phospholipid and neutral lipid fatty acids) revealed differences between soil managements and showed similar patterns of variation in all locations. Spore density positively correlated with all soil lipids fractions. The results suggest that AMF spore communities and fatty acids in soils are suitable indicators of soil management involving different levels of crop rotation. Spore richness measured at a regional scale proved to be sensitive to different NT agricultural managements. Moreover, certain morphospecies could be good bioindicators for NT practices based on cropping systems on the Argentinean Pampas.

Background and Aims: Arachnitis uniflora is a mycoheterotrophic plant that exploits arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi of neighbouring plants. We tested A. uniflora's specificity towards fungi across its large latitudinal range, as well as the role of historical events and current environmental, geographical and altitudinal variables on fungal genetic diversity. Methods: Arachnitis uniflora mycorrhizas were sampled at 25 sites. Fungal phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed, genetic diversity was calculated and the main divergent lineages were dated. Phylogeographical analysis was performed with the main fungal clade. Fungal diversity correlations with environmental factors were investigated. Key Results: Glomeraceae fungi dominated, with a main clade that likely originated in the Upper Cretaceous and diversified in the Miocene. Two other arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal families not previously known to be targeted by A. uniflora were detected rarely and appear to be facultative associations. High genetic diversity, found in Bolivia and both northern and southern Patagonia, was correlated with temperature, rainfall and soil features. Conclusions: Fungal genetic diversity and its distribution can be explained by the ancient evolutionary history of the target fungi and by micro-scale environmental conditions with a geographical mosaic pattern. Temperate grasslands are affected by nutrient deficiency and this deficiency is one of the main limiting factors for forage production, such as the grasslands of the Salado River Basin (Argentina), which exhibit low-P availability for plant growth. Alternatives to increase forage production include the selection of plant species adapted to grow under P deficiency, P fertilization, and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. In a pot experiment, we investigated the effect of low and high-P doses and AM fungi on the development of three forage species. The interaction of P addition and AM fungi increased L. tenuis (legume) biomass production and improve P nutrition, even with high-P dose, because of its higher P requirement to grow and lower ability for P uptake than grasses. High-P increased the biomass of S. arundinaceus (C3 grass) and P. coloratum (C4 grass), and AM fungi did not directly impact on plant growth of grasses, but did impact on P nutrition at either level of P fertilization. The specific P uptake of non-fertilized L. tenuis plants increased 97% due to AM inoculation and was the highest value among the three non-fertilized species. Furthermore, the specific P uptake of non-fertilized grasses was similar, despite the C metabolic pathway and AM fungi, but the specific root length was 70.88% lower for P. coloratum than for S. arundinaceus. Thus, the main strategy of L. tenuis was AM association, whereas that of S. arundinaceus was the highest ability of the root system to explore the soil. In P. coloratum, the strategy could not be explained by changes in specific root length or AM association. Our results would be an advantageous first step to promote better management of forage land sustainably while increasing forage production and preserve the beneficial effects of native AM communities in the Salado River Basin.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are ubiquitous soil microorganisms that establish a direct physical link between soil and plant roots constituting an integral component of the natural ecosystems being present in saline environment. These fungi are associated with the roots of over 80% terrestrial plant species including halophytes. Compared with other parts of the world, published information on halophytes vegetation adapted to saline environments in South America, and even more so on their utilization, is quite scarce. This work showed the mycorrhizal status of halophytes and salt-tolerance species capable of growing in salty soils, used as a forage resource for livestock. Specially we made a focus in two saline soils of Argentinean Pampas and Salinas Grandes dominated by Lotus tenuis and members of Chenopodiaceae family respectively. This data is of relevance because they often constitute the only forage resource for the possible way to utilize these plants to remediate salt-affected soils.

Knowledge about tree production practices is essential to support forestrestoration projects, but is still lacking for many tree species. Maytenus boaria is a neotropical tree distributed across the temperate and subtropical South American mountains. In central Argentina, it is mainly restricted to the most preserved forest remnants. Attempts to plant this species have had little success due to difficulties in seedling production and low seedlingsurvival. We set up four trials aiming to identify the constraints of seedling production and outplanting. Under greenhouse conditions, we evaluated (i) pre?germination treatments and (ii) seedling response to inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). In the field, we planted M. boaria saplings as well as saplings of the most abundant tree in our study site and recorded (iii) survival and height for 10 years. Finally, (iv) we quantified natural recruitmentin an attempt to determine M. boaria regeneration niche. Germination varied from 13.1 to 29.2% among treatments. Depulped seeds stratified at 5 oC showed the highest germination (29.2%). Shoot phosphorus concentration in AMF-treated seedlings was significantly higher (45%) than in non-inoculated seedlings. Survival of M. boaria saplings was similar to that of the most abundant tree in our study site, but their lower height suggested limited growth.We recorded low abundance of M. boaria seedlings in the field; therefore, we were unable to identify the characteristics of its regeneration niche. Reforestation activities should include seed depulping and stratification at 5 oC to improve germination. The capacity of AMF to enhance nutrition should be evaluated under field conditions. Conhecimento sobre as práticas de produção da árvore é essencial para apoiar projetos de restauração florestal, mas é ainda insuficiente para muitas espécies arbóreas. Maytenus boaria é uma árvore neotropical distribuída pelas montanhas temperadas e subtropicais da América do Sul. No centro da Argentina, é majoritariamente restrita nos remanescentes de floresta mais preservados. Tentativas de plantar esta espécie tiveram pouco sucesso devido às dificuldades de produção de mudas e baixa sobrevivência das plântulas. Montamos quatro ensaios com o objetivo de identificar as restrições à produção de mudas e plantio de campo. Sob condições de estufa, avaliamos os tratamentos de (i) pré-germinação e (ii) resposta das plântulas à inoculação com fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA). No campo, nós plantadas mudas de M. boaria, bem como mudas da árvore mais abundante em nosso local de estudo, e avaliamos a (iii) sobrevivência e altura por 10 anos. Finalmente, (iv) nós quantificamos o recrutamento natural em tentativa de determinar o nicho de regeneração da M. boaria. A germinação variou de 13,1 a 29,2% entre os tratamentos. Sementes sem a polpa estratificadas a 5 °C obtiveram a maior germinação (29,2%). Concentração de fósforo na parte aérea das mudas tratadas com FMA foi significativamente maior (45%) do que em mudas não inoculadas. Sobrevivência das mudas de M. boaria foi semelhante ao da árvore mais abundante em nosso local de estudo, mas sua baixa altura sugeriu crescimento limitado. Nós gravamos baixa abundância de plântulas de M. boaria no campo, portanto, não fomos capazes de identificar as características do seu nicho de regeneração. Atividades de reflorestamento devem incluir a retirada da polpa das sementes e estratificação a 5 °C para melhorar a germinação. Phosphorus (P) is the main limiting factor for forage production in grasslands. It is important to determine levels of available P in soil that optimise production with minimum impact on arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis. We investigated the effects of increasing P availability on biomass production, root morphology, AM symbiosis and P acquisition of a forage legume (Lotus tenuis), a C3 grass (Schedonorus arundinaceus) and a C4 grass (Panicum coloratum) growing on a P-deficient soil in pots with P applied at rates of 0–160 mg kg–1 dry soil. The three forage species responded strongly to addition of P, with 90% of maximum shoot growth reached at available P levels of 24.3 mg kg–1 for L. tenuis, 14.4 mg kg–1 for P. coloratum and 11.2 mg kg–1 for S. arundinaceus. Lotus tenuis and P. coloratum produced higher yields of shoot biomass than S. arundinaceus. Root dry weight was higher in the legume than in the grasses, with the root-mass fraction being lowest in P. coloratum. AM colonisation was higher in L. tenuis roots than in grass roots, and decreased with increased soil P availability, especially in grasses. Low to moderate additions of P did not affect, and could even improve, AM colonisation in L. tenuis roots. For L. tenuis, it is possible to increase forage yield while maintaining high values of AM colonisation at 10–20 mg kg–1 of available P, but for grasses, especially S. arundinaceus, it is difficult to achieve both objectives. The presence of L. tenuis in grasslands or pastures may contribute to maintaining the native AM inoculum under a wide range of soil P availability in regions such as the Salado River basin of Argentina.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi associated with Chenopodiaceae from two saline environments of Cordoba province. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonize approximately 82% of land plants in every ecosystem, even in extreme conditions such as saline soils. In the present work we report the arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization and its vertical root concentration in four Chenopodiaceae plants species (Allenrolfea patagonica, Atriplex argentina, Heterostachys ritteriana and Suaeda divaricata) at five different soil depths in two salines of central Argentina. All the plant species showed mycorrhizal colonization and varied significantly among plant species and sites for all soil depths. Atriplex argentina presented the highest mycorrhizal colonization at almost all soil depths (0-50 cm). In all plant species root concentration decrease as depth increases at both sites. The presence of mycorrhizal roots in the deeper layers of soil in the four Chenopodiaceae plants species, shows that these fungi are tolerant to live in the saline soils of central Argentina., Los hongos micorrícico-arbusculares (HMA) colonizan aproximadamente el 82% de las plantas terrestres en cualquier ecosistema, aún en condiciones extremas tales como los suelos salinos. En el presente trabajo se reporta la colonización micorrícica arbuscular (CMA) y su concentración radical en cuatro especies de Chenopodiaceae (Allenrolfea patagonica, Atriplex argentina, Heterostachys ritteriana y Suaeda divaricata) en cinco profundidades del suelo en dos salinas del Centro de Argentina. Todas las plantas mostraron colonización micorrícica que varió significativamente entre especies y sitios para todas las profundidades. Atriplex argentina presentó el mayor porcentaje de CMA en casi todas las profundidades (0-50 cm). En todas las especies, la concentración radical disminuyó a medida que se incrementó la profundidad en ambos sitios. To evaluate the Myriophyllum aquaticum and Potamogeton pusillus macrophytes as indicator organisms of heavy metal pollution in biomonitoring studies of the aquatic ecosystem, the aim of this studywas to determine the Co,Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn accumulation in leaves of the those species and the possible relationship to water pollution by thesemetals. Surfacewater, sediment and plantswere collected at 10 sampling sites of the Ctalamochitariver (Argentina). Cooper and Pb concentrations exceeded the limits established for the protection of aquatic life defined by Argentina Legislation (Cu: 2.0 μgL−1, Pb: 2.0 μgL−1) and international norms (Cu: 1.6 μgL−1, Pb: 2.5 μgL−1) in surface water, while Cu and Zn exceeded the limit for ecological screening levels (Cu: 31.6 mgkg−1, Zn: 121.0 mgkg−1) in sediment. Heavy metal concentrationswere found to be higher downstream of Río Tercero city in water and sediments samples, probably related to the contribution of pollutants from the effluent discharge of the city. Both species revealed a high capacity to accumulate heavy metals in its tissues, in areas of the river with higher heavy metals values in the abiotic compartments. Particularly, high accumulation of Co, Cu, Ni and Zn in P. pusillus correlatedwith their concentrations in sediments and Co, Cu, Mnand Zn accumulation in M. aquaticum correlated with the concentrations of these metals in water. These macrophytes reflect spatialvariations of metals in water and sediments of the Ctalamochita river; therefore they are of potential use as heavy metal bioindicators of river pollution. It has been predicted that land use change will pose the main threat to biodiversity worldwide (Sala et al. 2000). A recent meta-analysis shows that, at local scale, conversion and degradation of habitats promote on average a global decline of 8.1 % of species richness and 10.1 % of abundance (Newbold et al. 2015). These human-mediated changes in biodiversity strongly affect ecosystem stability (Hautier et al. 2015). Given the importance of biodiversity on ecosystem functions and services, studies on the effects of land use on species assemblages are highly relevant in current global context.

The objective of this study was to determine patterns of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization of Alnus acuminata Kunth at two natural forests in relation to soil parameters at two different seasons (autumn and spring). The soil parameters studied were field capacity, pH, electrical conductivity, available P, total N and organic matter. The percentage of AM colonization was estimated and correlated to soil properties and to two different seasons. The results indicate that the percentage of AM colonization varied among soil types and was higher in spring than autumn. A significant positive correlation was found between AM colonization and electrical conductivity, organic matter and total Nitrogen. Results of this study provide evidence that AM colonization of A. acuminata can be affected by some soil parameters and seasonality.El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar el patrón de colonización micorrícico arbuscular (MA) de Alnus acuminata Kunth en dos bosques del Noroeste Argentino, en relación a los parámetros edáficos y en dos estaciones del año (otoño y primavera). Los parámetros edáficos estudiados fueron: capacidad de campo, pH, conductividad eléctrica, fósforo disponible, N total y materia orgánica. Se cuantificó el porcentaje de colonización MA y se lo correlacionó con las variables estudiadas (parámetros edáficos y estaciones). Los resultados indican que el porcentaje de colonización MA varió entre los dos tipos de suelo y las estaciones, siendo mayor en primavera. Se observó correlación positiva significativa entre el porcentaje de colonización MA y la conductividad eléctrica, materia orgánica y N total. Los resultados de este estudio indican que la colonización MA de A. acuminata puede ser afectada por algunos parámetros edáficos y la estacionalidad.

The aim of this work was to describe and compare the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) morphospecies community and root colonization in three Polylepis australis forest disturbance types (degraded forest, young forest and mature forest). Rhizosphere soil samples were collected during wet and dry seasons in three sites located at the high mountains of central Argentina. A highly diverse AMF community was detected with 32 different morphospecies. AMF richness, density, Shannon diversity and evenness were neither influenced by forest disturbance type nor by season. Nevertheless, indicator species analyses showed two AMF taxa mostly associated with the degraded forest, one with the young forest and two linked preferentially to the mature forest. Moreover, the latter forest type showed the highest biovolume of Gigaspora spp., a genus representative of conserved ecosystems. P. australis root colonization was similar among forest disturbance types and seasons. However, higher abundance of vesicles was observed during the dry than during the wet season. This study showed that AMF community composition was relatively similar among forests with distinct structural complexity. These results suggest that the AMF community may be resistant to the kind of disturbances that shaped the forests compared, or that natural successional processes may permit AMF to recover from these disturbances. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonize land plants in every ecosystem, even extreme conditions such as saline soils. In the present work we report for the first time the mycorrhizal status and the vertical fungal distribution of AMF spores present in the rhizospheric soil samples of four species of Chenopodiaceae (Allenrolfea patagonica, Atriplex argentina, Heterostachys ritteriana and Suaeda divaricata) at five different depths in two saline of central Argentina. Roots showed medium, low or no colonization (0-50%). Nineteen morphologically distinctive AMF species were recovered. The number of AMF spores ranged between 3 and 1162 per 100 g dry soil, and AMF spore number decreased as depth increased at both sites. The highest spore number was recorded in the upper soil depth (0-10 cm) and in S. divaricata. Depending of the host plant, some AMF species sporulated mainly in the deep soil layers (Glomus magnicaule in Allenrolfea patagonica, Septoglomus aff. constrictum in Atriplex argentina), others mainly in the top layers (G. brohultti in Atriplex argentina and Septoglomus aff. constrictum in Allenrolfea patagonica). Although the low percentages of colonization or lack of it, our results show a moderate diversity of AMF associated to the species of Chenopodiaceae investigated in this study. La composición y distribución de la meiofauna bentónica del Golfo Nuevo (Chubut, Argentina) se describen en relación a las variables ambientales. La meiofauna y el sedimento de la zona intermareal de cuatro playas de arena con diferentes perturbaciones antrópicas fueron recolectadas en Junio de 2005. Las muestras se colectaron en 20 sitios de muestreo con tubos core de 2,5 cm de diámetro y 10 cm de profundidad. Fueron identificados 13 taxones de meiofauna, representados principalmente por nematodos, gastrotricos, ciliados y poliquetos y la abundancia de la meiofauna que fue desde 1,5 × 10³ a 6,5 × 10³ ind. 10 cm‑2. Los análisis univariado (ANOVA de una-vía) y multivariado (ANOSIM/MDS) indicaron diferencias significativas en las estructuras de la comunidad entre los sitios con efectos antrópicos y aquellos en condiciones prístinas, revelando que estas diferencias fueron entre las playas próximas y alejadas de una ciudad con la actividad portuaria. Los cambios en la estructura de la comunidad (abundancia y diversidad) pueden haber estado relacionados con gradientes ambientales próximos a la costa. El análisis BIO‑ENV mostró que la profundidad de la discontinuidad del potencial redox puede ser el principal factor que influye en la distribución espacial de los organismos. The composition and distribution of the benthic meiofauna assemblages of the Nuevo Gulf (Chubut, Argentina) are described in relation to abiotic variables. The meiofauna and sediment samples were collected in the intertidal zone of four sandy beaches with different anthropic disturbances in June 2005. The samples were obtained at 20 sampling sites using a 2.5 cm diameter core tube at a depth of 10 cm. A total of 13 meiofauna taxa were identified, with the meiofauna being primarily represented by nematodes, gastrotrichs, ciliates and polychaetes and the meiofauna abundances ranging from 1.5 × 10³ to 6.5 × 10³ ind. 10 cm‑2. Univariate (one-way ANOVA test) and multivariate (ANOSIM/MDS test) analyses showed clear dissimilarities in community structures between sites with anthropic effects and those in pristine condition, revealed by the significant differences were found between beaches near to and far way from a city with port activity. The meiofaunal assemblage varied in abundance and diversity, and these changes in the community structure may have been related to environmental gradients on the shore. The BIO‑ENV analysis showed that the redox potential discontinuity depth might be the main factor in the spatial distribution of organisms.
