1. Detection of new Extreme BL Lac objects with H.E.S.S. and Swift XRT

Abstract

Extreme high synchrotron peaked blazars (EHBLs) are amongst the most powerful accelerators found in nature. Usually the synchrotron peak frequency of an EHBL is above $10^{17}\,$Hz, i.e., lies in the range of medium to hard X-rays making them ideal sources to study particle acceleration and radiative processes. EHBL objects are commonly observed at energies beyond several TeV, making them also powerful probes of gamma-ray absorption in the intergalactic medium. During the last decade, several attempts have been made to increase the number of EHBL detected at TeV energies and probe their spectral characteristics. Here we report new detections of EHBLs in the TeV energy regime, each at a redshift of less than 0.2, by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). Also, we report on X-ray observations of these EHBLs candidates with Swift XRT. In conjunction with the very high energy observations, this allows us to probe the radiation mechanisms and the underlying particle acceleration processes., Comment: Proceedings of the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

Abstract

Context. HESS J1809−193 is an unassociated very-high-energy γ-ray source located on the Galactic plane. While it has been connected to the nebula of the energetic pulsar PSR J1809−1917, supernova remnants and molecular clouds present in the vicinity also constitute possible associations. Recently, the detection of γ-ray emission up to energies of ∼100 TeV with the HAWC observatory has led to renewed interest in HESS J1809−193. Aims. We aim to understand the origin of the γ-ray emission of HESS J1809−193. Methods. We analysed 93.2 h of data taken on HESS J1809−193 above 0.27 TeV with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), using a multi-component, three-dimensional likelihood analysis. In addition, we provide a new analysis of 12.5 yr of Fermi-LAT data above 1 GeV within the region of HESS J1809−193. The obtained results are interpreted in a time-dependent modelling framework. Results. For the first time, we were able to resolve the emission detected with H.E.S.S. into two components: an extended component (modelled as an elongated Gaussian with a 1-σ semi-major and semi-minor axis of ∼0.62° and ∼0.35°, respectively) that exhibits a spectral cutoff at ∼13 TeV, and a compact component (modelled as a symmetric Gaussian with a 1-σ radius of ∼0.1°) that is located close to PSR J1809−1917 and shows no clear spectral cutoff. The Fermi-LAT analysis also revealed extended γ-ray emission, on scales similar to that of the extended H.E.S.S. component. Conclusions. Our modelling indicates that based on its spectrum and spatial extent, the extended H.E.S.S. component is likely caused by inverse Compton emission from old electrons that form a halo around the pulsar wind nebula. The compact component could be connected to either the pulsar wind nebula or the supernova remnant and molecular clouds. Due to its comparatively steep spectrum, modelling the Fermi-LAT emission together with the H.E.S.S. components is not straightforward.

Abstract

Stereochemically pure phosphines with phosphorus-heteroatom bonds and P-centered chirality are a promising class of functional building blocks for the design of chiral ligands and organocatalysts. A route to enantiomerically pure primary aminophosphine sulfides was opened through stereospecific reductive C−N bond cleavage of phosphorus(V) precursors by lithium in liquid ammonia. The chemoselectivity of the reaction as a function of reaction time, substrate pattern, and chiral auxiliary was investigated. In the presence of exclusively aliphatic groups bound to the phosphorus atom, all competing reductive side reactions are totally prevented. The absolute configurations of all P-stereogenic compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Their use as synthetic building blocks was demonstrated. The lithium salt of (R)-BINOL-dithiophosphoric acid proved to be a useful stereochemical probe to determine the enantiomeric purity. Insights into the coordination mode of the lithium-based chiral complex formed in solution was provided by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Abstract

We present the preparation of tert-butyldiphenylsilanes differing in one functional group. The molecular structures of the phenyl (3), methoxy (4), and amino derivatives (5) were elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and their crystal packing investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis along with 2D fingerprint plots. In the all-C derivative 3, the high symmetry dependence of the crystal packing enables a multitude of directional C(methyl)−H⋅⋅⋅C(π) interactions between the tert-butyl and phenyl groups. The methoxy derivative 4 is characterized by considerably short H⋅⋅⋅H contacts possibly resulting from pre-orienting C(aryl)−H⋅⋅⋅O and C(aryl)−H⋅⋅⋅C(π) hydrogen bonds. In the amino derivative 5, the nitrogen atom is not involved in intermolecular interactions, instead dispersive H⋅⋅⋅H contacts might become more important for the crystal cohesion. These findings once again underline the pronounced lone electron pair density transfer from the nitrogen atom towards the silicon atom.

12. Low and High Z′Polymorphs of Dibenzyldiphenylsilane: A Hydrocarbon-Patterned Molecular Crystalline System

Abstract

Studying weak intermolecular interactions in molecular crystals is key to a better understanding of crystalline polymorphism and structure formation principles. Dibenzyldiphenylsilane (1) was synthesized as a hydrocarbon-patterned molecular model compound. Three polymorphic crystal structures, one with Z′= 1 (1-t, triclinic, P1̅), one with Z′= 2 (1-o, orthorhombic, Pna21), and another with Z′= 4 (1-m, monoclinic, Pc), were analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Subtle differences in the weak intermolecular interactions between the three polymorphic crystal packing arrangements were thoroughly investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis along with two-dimensional fingerprint plots. The highest Z′polymorph (1-m) has the lowest packing density but exhibits the shortest intermolecular H···H and C–H···π contacts. Conformational differences and the contribution of dispersion interactions to the stability of the three polymorphic crystal structures were investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, comparing different functionals. The Z′> 1 polymorphs undergo phase transitions into the triclinic form 1-t(Z′= 1) at room temperature.

Abstract

Structural knowledge on ubiquitous lithium salts in solution and in the crystalline state is of paramount importance for our understanding of many chemical reactions and of the electrolyte behaviour in lithium ion batteries. A bulky bidentate Si-based ligand (6) was used to create simplified model systems suitable for correlating structures of LiCl and LiPF6 complexes in the solid-state and in solution by combining various experimental, spectroscopic, and computational methods. Solution studies were performed using 1H DOSY, multinuclear variable temperature NMR spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. [Ph2Si(2-CH2Py)2·LiCl]2 (3) dissociates into a monomeric species (9) in THF. For [Ph2Si(2-CH2Py)2·LiPF6]2 (11), low temperature NMR studies revealed an unprecedented chiral coordination mode (12) in non-coordinating solvents.

37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC 2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 779 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0779, Detecting and studying galactic gamma-ray sources emitting very-high energy photons sheds light on the acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays presumably created in these sources. Currently, there are few sources emitting photons with energies exceeding 100 TeV. In this work we revisit the unidentified source MGRO J1908+06, initially detected by Milagro, using an updated H.E.S.S. dataset and analysis pipeline. The vicinity of the source contains a supernova remnant and pulsars as well as molecular clouds. This makes the identification of the primary source(s) of galactic cosmic rays as well as the nature of the gamma-ray emission challenging, especially in light of the recent HAWC and LHAASO detection of the high energy tail of its spectrum. Abstract

Stereochemically pure phosphines with phosphorus‐heteroatom bonds and P‐centered chirality are a promising class of functional building blocks for the design of chiral ligands and organocatalysts. A route to enantiomerically pure primary aminophosphine sulfides was opened through stereospecific reductive C−N bond cleavage of phosphorus(V) precursors by lithium in liquid ammonia. The chemoselectivity of the reaction as a function of reaction time, substrate pattern, and chiral auxiliary was investigated. In the presence of exclusively aliphatic groups bound to the phosphorus atom, all competing reductive side reactions are totally prevented. The absolute configurations of all P‐stereogenic compounds were determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis. Their use as synthetic building blocks was demonstrated. The lithium salt of (R)‐BINOL‐dithiophosphoric acid proved to be a useful stereochemical probe to determine the enantiomeric purity. Insights into the coordination mode of the lithium‐based chiral complex formed in solution was provided by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 777 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0777, Fast radio bursts (FRB) are enigmatic powerful single radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds and high brightness temperatures suggesting coherent emission mechanism. For the time being a number of extragalactic FRBs have been detected in the high-frequency radio band including repeating ones. The most plausible explanation for these phenomena is magnetar hyperflares. The first observational evidence of this scenario was obtained in April 2020 when an FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma repeater SGR1935+2154. The FRB was preceded with a number of soft gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift-BAT satellite, which triggered the follow-up program of the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). H.E.S.S. has observed SGR1935+2154 over a 2 hour window few hours prior to the FRB detection by STARE2 and CHIME. The observations overlapped with other X-ray bursts from the magnetar detected by INTEGRAL and Swift-BAT, thus providing first observations of a magnetar in a flaring state in the very-high energy domain. Abstract

Phosphonium ions are widely used in preparative organic synthesis and catalysis. The provision of new types of cations that contain both functional and chiral information is a major synthetic challenge and can open up new horizons in asymmetric cation‐directed and Lewis acid catalysis. We discovered an efficient methodology towards new Si‐chiral four‐membered CPSSi* heterocyclic cations. Three synthetic approaches are presented. The stereochemical sequence of anchimerically assisted cation formation with B(C6F5)3 and subsequent hydride addition was fully elucidated and proceeds with excellent preservation of the chiral information at the stereogenic silicon atom. Also the mechanism of dihydrogen release from a protonated hydrosilane was studied in detail by the help of Si‐centered chirality as stereochemical probe. Chemoselectivity switch (dihydrogen release vs. protodesilylation) can easily be achieved through slight modifications of the solvent. A matched/mismatched case was identified and the intermolecularity of this reaction supported by spectroscopic, kinetic, deuterium‐labeling experiments, and quantum chemical calculations., Chiral silyl phosphonium ions are a synthetically valuable class of compounds from a stereochemical and preparative point of view. Convenient routes towards small and configurationally stable, silicon‐chiral four‐membered heterocyclic cations are disclosed (see scheme). By combining experimental, spectroscopic, stereochemical, and computational methods, a matched/mismatched case was identified for both dehydrogenation and protodesilylation and the intermolecularity of these reactions proven.

Abstract

The first example of a homogeneous catalyst based on an earth-abundant metal for the hydrogenation of organic carbonates to methanol and alcohols is reported. Based on the mechanistic investigation, which indicates metal-ligand cooperation between the manganese center and the N-H group of the pincer ligand, we propose that the hydrogenation of organic carbonates to methanol occurs via formate and aldehyde intermediates. The reaction offers an indirect route for the conversion of CO2 to methanol, which coupled with the use of an earth abundant catalyst, makes the overall process environmentally benign and sustainable.

Functionalized disiloxane units with defined structures are interesting molecular models for investigating the reactivity and chemoselectivity in transformations that are of interest in synthesis, surface chemistry, and materials science. (Mes)PhSi(OMe)(2)(1) (Mes = mesityl) and (Mes)PhSiCl2(5) were chosen as starting compounds for the controlled synthesis of methoxy-, amino-, and chloro-functionalized unsymmetric disiloxanes. Two synthesis routes towards (Mes)PhSi(OMe)(OSiPh3) (3) were followed, one via the aminomethoxysilane (Mes)PhSi(OMe)(NC4H8) (2) and the other via the chlorodisiloxane (Mes)PhSiCl(OSiPh3) (6). The amino-substituted disiloxane (Mes)PhSi(NC4H8)(OSiPh3) (4) was obtained from the chloro derivative6withN-pyrrolidinyllithium, but the same reaction starting from compound3was not successful. All provided disiloxanes were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography.

[Image: see text] Direct hydrogenation of a broad variety of cyclic imides to diols and amines using a ruthenium catalyst is reported here. We have applied this strategy toward the development of a new liquid organic hydrogen carrier system based on the hydrogenation of bis-cyclic imide that is formed by the dehydrogenative coupling of 1,4-butanediol and ethylenediamine using a new ruthenium catalyst. The rechargeable system has a maximum gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity of 6.66 wt%.

[Image: see text] Base-metal catalyzed dehydrogenative self-coupling of 2-amino alcohols to selectively form functionalized 2,5-substituted pyrazine derivatives is presented. Also, 2-substituted quinoxaline derivatives are synthesized by dehydrogenative coupling of 1,2-diaminobenzene and 1,2-diols. In both cases, water and hydrogen gas are formed as the sole byproducts. The reactions are catalyzed by acridine-based pincer complexes of earth-abundant manganese.

Abstract

Homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of esters to alcohols is an industrially important, environmentally benign reaction. While precious metal-based catalysts for this reaction are now well known, only very few catalysts based on first-row metal complexes were reported. Here we present the hydrogenation of esters catalyzed by a complex of earth-abundant manganese. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and insight into the mechanism is provided based on an NMR study and the synthesis of novel Mn complexes postulated as intermediates.

Abstract

The Kv2.1 channel generates a delayed-rectifier current in neurons and is responsible for modulation of neuronal spike frequency and membrane repolarization in pancreatic β-cells and cardiomyocytes. As with other tetrameric voltage-activated K(+)-channels, it has been proposed that each of the four Kv2.1 voltage-sensing domains activates independently upon depolarization, leading to a final concerted transition that causes channel opening. The mechanism by which voltage-sensor activation is coupled to the gating of the pore is still not understood. Here we show that the carbon-monoxide releasing molecule 2 (CORM-2) is an allosteric inhibitor of the Kv2.1 channel and that its inhibitory properties derive from the CORM-2 ability to largely reduce the voltage dependence of the opening transition, uncoupling voltage-sensor activation from the concerted opening transition. We additionally demonstrate that CORM-2 modulates Shaker K(+)-channels in a similar manner. Our data suggest that the mechanism of inhibition by CORM-2 may be common to voltage-activated channels and that this compound should be a useful tool for understanding the mechanisms of electromechanical coupling.
