Abstract

The 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics emphasised the importance of an intensified and well-coordinated programme of accelerator R&D, supporting the design and delivery of future particle accelerators in a timely, affordable and sustainable way. This report sets out a roadmap for European accelerator R&D for the next five to ten years, covering five topical areas identified in the Strategy update. The R&D objectives include: improvement of the performance and cost-performance of magnet and radio-frequency acceleration systems; investigations of the potential of laser / plasma acceleration and energy-recovery linac techniques; and development of new concepts for muon beams and muon colliders. The goal of the roadmap is to document the collective view of the field on the next steps for the R&D programme, and to provide the evidence base to support subsequent decisions on prioritisation, resourcing and implementation., Comment: 270 pages, 58 figures. Abstract

The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN) aims to determine the effective electron (anti)neutrino mass with a sensitivity of $0.2\textrm{ eV/c}^2$ (90$\%$ C.L.) by precisely measuring the endpoint region of the tritium $\beta$-decay spectrum. It uses a tandem of electrostatic spectrometers working as MAC-E (magnetic adiabatic collimation combined with an electrostatic) filters. In the space between the pre-spectrometer and the main spectrometer, an unavoidable Penning trap is created when the superconducting magnet between the two spectrometers, biased at their respective nominal potentials, is energized. The electrons accumulated in this trap can lead to discharges, which create additional background electrons and endanger the spectrometer and detector section downstream. To counteract this problem, "electron catchers" were installed in the beamline inside the magnet bore between the two spectrometers. These catchers can be moved across the magnetic-flux tube and intercept on a sub-ms time scale the stored electrons along their magnetron motion paths. Abstract

We report on the neutrino mass measurement result from the first four-week science run of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment KATRIN in spring 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are energy analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the kinematic endpoint at 18.57 keV gives an effective neutrino mass square value of $(-1.0^{+0.9}_{-1.1})$ eV$^2$. From this we derive an upper limit of 1.1 eV (90$\%$ confidence level) on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. This value coincides with the KATRIN sensitivity. It improves upon previous mass limits from kinematic measurements by almost a factor of two and provides model-independent input to cosmological studies of structure formation.

Abstract

The determination of the neutrino mass is one of the major challenges in astroparticle physics today. Direct neutrino mass experiments, based solely on the kinematics of beta-decay, provide a largely model-independent probe to the neutrino mass scale. The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is designed to directly measure the effective electron antineutrino mass with a sensitivity of 0.2 eV 90% CL. In this work we report on the first operation of KATRIN with tritium which took place in 2018. During this commissioning phase of the tritium circulation system, excellent agreement of the theoretical prediction with the recorded spectra was found and stable conditions over a time period of 13 days could be established. These results are an essential prerequisite for the subsequent neutrino mass measurements with KATRIN in 2019.

Abstract

Slow-read Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are complex to detect and mitigate. Although existing tools allow one to identify these attacks, these tools mainly generate alerts. However, in real scenarios, a large number of attack detection alerts will put the security workforce in a bottleneck, as they will not be able to implement mitigation actions in a complete and timely manner. Furthermore, since most existing security solutions for DDoS attack mitigation are tested using datasets and simulated scenarios, their applicability to production networks could be unfeasible or ineffective due to possibly incomplete assumptions in their design. Therefore, automated security solutions against DDoS attacks are needed not only to be designed but also to be implemented and evaluated in real scenarios. This study presents a Software-Defined Networking (SDN)-based security framework, which automates the monitoring, detection, and mitigation of slow-rate DDoS attacks. The framework is implemented in a physical network that uses equipment from the European Experimental Facility Smart Networks for Industry (SN4I). The results demonstrate that the framework effectively mitigates malicious connections, with a mitigation efficiency between 91.66%– 100% for different conditions of the number of attackers and victims. In addition, the SDN-SlowRate-DDoS dataset is presented, which contains multiple experiments of slow-rate DDoS attacks performed on the real testbed. The resources provided in this security dataset are useful to the scientific and industry communities in designing and testing realistic solutions for intrusion detection systems.

Wireless communication systems working in millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands offer higher bandwidths than traditional radio frequency schemes. This technology allows multibeam steering and data multiplexing with the help of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, supporting large bandwidths at mmWave frequencies is challenging due to the use of large antenna arrays with beamforming, sampling signals with large bandwidths, and baseband signal processing operations at gigabit data rates. Due to the wider bandwidth and higher signal processing requirements of mmWave systems, low-complexity receiver algorithms become important. Previously reported investigations assumed the use of hybrid beamforming structures that reduce power consumption and signal processing tasks. Therefore, the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) becomes relevant for the processing of mmWave signals as reported in earlier works. In this article, to carry out MIMO combining processing for mmWave communications, we propose a fully complex multilayer extreme learning machine (M-ELM) neural network. We investigate the tuning of the number of neurons in each hidden layer for the proposed method to maximize the system performance and decrease the complexity of the receiver. We compare the results of the introduced M-ELM algorithm with a fully complex extreme learning machine (ELM), fully real ELM, and M-ELM defined in the real plane in terms of spectral efficiency, bit error rate, computational complexity, and processing time. Furthermore, we compare the novel M-ELM strategy with traditional linear MIMO receivers, such as Maximum Ratio and Minimum Mean Square Error, as well as to a multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network trained offline. The numerical results show that with a good balance between the overall performance and computational cost of the ANN, the fully complex M-ELM MIMO receiver outperforms the other evaluated schemes.

Abstract

The KATRIN experiment will probe the neutrino mass by measuring the beta-electron energy spectrum near the endpoint of tritium beta-decay. An integral energy analysis will be performed by an electro-static spectrometer (Main Spectrometer), an ultra-high vacuum vessel with a length of 23.2 m, a volume of 1240 m^3, and a complex inner electrode system with about 120000 individual parts. The strong magnetic field that guides the beta-electrons is provided by super-conducting solenoids at both ends of the spectrometer. Its influence on turbo-molecular pumps and vacuum gauges had to be considered. A system consisting of 6 turbo-molecular pumps and 3 km of non-evaporable getter strips has been deployed and was tested during the commissioning of the spectrometer. In this paper the configuration, the commissioning with bake-out at 300{\deg}C, and the performance of this system are presented in detail. The vacuum system has to maintain a pressure in the 10^{-11} mbar range. Abstract

In this paper, we compare two artificial neural networks (ANNs) approaches designed to perform channel equalization for millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals operating in the 28 GHz frequency band. We used an in-house deterministic Three-Dimensional Ray-Launching (3D-RL) code to simulate the spatial structure of mmWave channels considering the material properties of the obstacles within the scenario at the frequency under analysis. We performed offline training of a multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network with the simulated mmWave channels to equalize the received signal. We also performed online training of an extreme learning machine (ELM) neural network to directly get the equalized symbols at the receiver, given as input the received mmWave signal. The ANN solutions were tested in terms of the achievable spectral efficiency, bit error rate, and time to process. We compared the ANN techniques to the minimum mean square error and the zero-forcing equalizers, considering an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing communication based on the 5G New Radio standard. We present numerical results on the performance of the proposed ANNs and show that the ELM strategy outperforms the MLP method, requiring significantly less processing time than the reviewed equalization methods.

Abstract

High-field magnets (HFM) are among the key technologies that will enable the search for new physics at the energy frontier. Approved projects (HL-LHC) and potential future circular machines such as proton-proton Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) and Super proton-proton Collider (SppC) require the development of superconducting (SC) magnets that produce fields beyond those attained in the LHC.The programme proposed here rests on the results achieved over the past twenty years of European and international programmes devoted to Nb$_{3}$Sn and HTS accelerator magnets, such as CARE, EuCARD, EuCARD2, ARIES and the recently launched I-FAST. It is structured to advance beyond the Nb$_{3}$Sn accelerator magnet construction that is presently running within the scope of HL-LHC, in close collaboration with the US Magnet Development Program (US-MDP), to provide answers as to the feasibility of a future circular collider based on Nb$_{3}$Sn magnets, as well as the application of HTS materials to the next generation of accelerator magnets.

Abstract

Contains fulltext : 229364.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) consensus molecular subtype 4 (CMS4) or CRC with a low immunoscore is associated with shorter survival times. Non-metastatic CRC with microsatellite instability (MSI) is associated with a lower risk of recurrence. We evaluated outcome (lymph node metastases [LNM] or cancer recurrence) in these tumor subtypes in patients with surgically-removed non-pedunculated T1 CRC by performing a multicenter case-cohort study. We included all patients in 13 hospitals in the Netherlands from 2000-2014 (n = 651). We randomly selected a subgroup of patients (n = 223) and all patients with LNM or recurrence (n = 63), and median follow-up of 44 months. We centrally reviewed tumor-slides, and constructed and immunostained tissue microarrays determining MSI, CMS (MSI/CMS1, CMS2/3, or CMS4), and immunoscore (I-low/I-high). We used weighted Cox proportional hazard models to evaluate the association of MSI, CMS, and immunoscore with LNM or recurrence, adjusting for conventional histologic risk factors. In the randomly selected subgroup of patients, 7.1% of tumors were MSI/CMS1, 91.0% CMS2/3, 1.8% CMS4, and 25% I-low. In the case-cohort, patients with CMS4 tumors had an increased risk for LNM or recurrence compared with patients with tumors of other CMSs (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 3.97; 95% CI, 1.12-14.06; P = 0.03). Albeit not significant, tumors with MSI had a lower risk for LNM or recurrence than other tumor subtypes (adjusted HR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.12-2.30; P = 0.39), whereas tumors with a low immunoscore had an increased risk for LNM or recurrence (adjusted HR, 1.30; 95% CI, 0.68-2.48; P = 0.43). In conclusion, in a case-cohort study of patients with non-pedunculated T1 CRC, MSI, and immunoscore were not significantly associated with adverse outcome after surgery. CMS4 substantially increased the risk of adverse outcome. However, CMS4 is rare in T1 CRCs, limiting its value for determining the risk in patients.

Research was conducted to examine the technical and economical benefits of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) in power systems. The placed in the network that were studied include the feeder locations of power stations, of power station auxiliaries and of local generating units. Results indicate that feeder locations of power stations and wind generators are the most economical places for SFCL.
