Eight bovine papillomavirus (BPV) types, BPV-1-8, have been classified, based on genome nucleotide sequence similarities, in the genera Deltapapillomavirus (BPV-1 and -2), Epsilonpapillomavirus (BPV-5 and -8), Xipapillomavirus (BPV-3, -4 and -6) and an unassigned genus (BPV-7). We report here the complete genome sequence of two new BPV types isolated from separate epithelial squamous papilloma lesions on cattle teats. The genomes are 7,303 and 7,399 bp in length, respectively, and both have genetic organization and consensus motifs typical of papillomaviruses. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree revealed that both viruses cluster with BPV-3, -4 and -6. Nucleotide sequence identities of the BPV L1 major capsid protein of these two new BPVs with BPV-3, their closest relative, are 74.2 and 71.2 %, respectively. These results suggest that both viruses are new BPV types in the genus Xipapillomavirus, and they are designated BPV-9 and BPV-10.

The DRH is an inbred rat strain highly resistant to chemically induced hepatocarcinogenesis. Two clusters of resistance loci Drh1 and Drh2 on chromosome 1 and 4 yield strong resistance to the formation of enzyme-altered foci and their progression. To evaluate the effect of enhanced cell proliferation in the progression stage, a partial hepatectomy (PH) was carried out in (DRH x F344)F1 rats 8 weeks after the start of 3'-Me-DAB administration. The incidence of liver cancer in the PH-F1 rats was equivalent to that in the F344 rats, although the number of tumors per rat was much lower. In contrast, the F1 rats without PH rarely developed cancers. Such modulation was not due to the loss of the resistance allele, since none of 18 hepatocellular carcinomas in PH-F1 rats showed allelic imbalance at Drhl and Drh2.

Methotrexate (MTX) is now widely used for the treatment of acute leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the pediatric oncology field and is thought to be one of the key drugs for this treatment. A regimen utilizing high dose MTX (HD-MTX) with leucovorin rescue is being investigated as effective chemotherapy in the patients with these kinds of cancer. Relatively large amounts of MTX (225 mg/m2) are given to such outpatients by intravenous push as a course of maintenance therapy. It is said that those amounts will infuse safely. However, we experienced two serious cases-patients T.H. and M.Y.--which developed into severe side effects after this treatment. Both patients showed acute renal failure, severe myelosuppression, erosion around the oral and anal region, and continuous diarrhea. Judging from the serum concentration of MTX, patient T. H. was exposed to more than the maximum allowance serum MTX level for 9.6 days, patient M. Y. for 6.5 days. This suggests physicians must pay attention to the clinical symptoms even after treatment using MTX without HD-MTX.
