- Abstract
Background: The Test of Gross Motor Development--3 (TGMD-3) is used to assess locomotor (LOCS) and ball (BS) skills in children. This test provides relevant information for evaluating learning and determining teaching efficacy. However, conducting and coding the test is time consuming. A screening form may improve its usage in specific settings and populations. Purpose: This study aimed to develop a screening form for the TGMD-3-SF and examine its validity and reliability. Method: We assessed 1,192 3-to-10-year-old children; 772 children completed the TGMD-3 and 420 the TGMD-3-SF; 114 children were retested for temporal stability and 300 for criterion validity. Results: We found appropriate results for the two-factors model, LOCS (gallop, hop, and skip) and BS (one-hand strike, kick, and overhand throw), RMSEA = 0.025, comparative-fit index = 0.99, and Tukey--Lewis index = 0.99; internal consistency (LOCS, [alpha] = 0.60; BS, [alpha] = 0.71); item validity (LOCS, r = 0.43, p < 0.001; BS, r = 0.47, p < 0.001); interrater (ICC = 0.86-0.99), intrarater (ICC = 0.61-0.92), test-retest (LOCS, ICC = 0.87; BS, ICC = 0.78) reliability, and concurrent validity (LOCS, r = 0.89, p < 0.01; BS, r = 0.90, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The TGMD-3-SF is valid and reliable for assessing children's gross motor development.

- Abstract
This study aimed to translate the Pictorial Scale of Physical Self-Concept for Brazilian Children (PSPPS-BR) into the Brazilian-Portuguese language, conduct a transcultural adaptation of it, and investigate its validity. Method: The authors adopted the reverse translation procedures to obtain the PSPPS-BR's Brazilian-Portuguese version. Three motor behavior experts assessed the scale items' clarity and pertinence. Ten professionals participated in the face validity study. Children (N = 300; 150 girls and 150 boys; 8-10 years old; M[subscript age] = 9.0, SD = 0.81) were randomly selected from six schools in Brazil and assessed using the PSPPS-BR, the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence, and the Self-Perception Profile for Children. The children (N = 100) were reassessed for test-retest reliability. Results: High clarity and pertinence agreement among experts (content validity coefficient from 98.4% to 100%; Gwet's agreement coefficient from 0.85 to 1.00, p < 0.001) and among professionals (content validity coefficient clarity: 83-100%, relevance: 90-100%) were obtained. The confirmatory factorial analysis showed adequate model fits (root mean square error of approximation = 0.067; comparative fit index = 0.968; Tukey-Lewis index = 0.949). Polychoric correlations showed an adequate internal consistency for total scale ([alpha] = 0.78) and items (alpha from 0.73 to 0.78). The intraclass coefficient correlation shown strong test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.95). Conclusion: The PSPPS-BR showed adequate validity and reliability for Brazilian children.

- Abstract
Background: Studies related to the motor performance of children have suggested an interaction between organisms and the environment. Although motor development seems to be similar among people, the behavior is specific to the context that people are part of. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the fundamental motor skill performance between indigenous (IN) and nonindigenous children. Methods: One hundred and thirteen children (43 IN and 70 nonindigenous children) between 8 and 10 years of age underwent the Test of Gross Motor Development--2. Results: A multivariate analysis showed a significant group main effect on both locomotor (p < 0.01) and object control (p < 0.01) performance with large and medium effect sizes ([eta][superscript 2][subscript p] values = 0.57-0.40, respectively). The IN showed the highest scores for galloping, hopping, leaping, jumping, sliding, striking a stationary ball, stationary dribbling, catching a ball, kicking, and overhand throwing (p < 0.01) with small to large effect sizes ([eta][superscript 2][subscript p] values = 0.05-0.50). Conclusion: The IN presented the highest levels of performance in fundamental motor skills compared with those of nonindigenous children. Most likely, IN have more opportunities for motor development in the environmental context (i.e., villages) where they live.

Parents’ perception of the environment may influence the time spent in outdoor physical activities in pre-school children. This study aimed to analyze the association between parents’ perception of the environment and outdoor physical activities outside the school in low-income preschoolers. In total, 129 preschoolers aged 3 to 5 years (4.4 years ± 0.7 years, 50% boys) and their parents participated in the study. An adapted version of the Neighborhood Environmental Walkability Scale was used to obtain parents’ environmental perceptions. Outdoor physical activities was measured based on two questions considering the usual time spent in these activities during week and weekend days. Information on sociodemographic was collected by interview. Logistic regression was used to analyze the associations. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS, version 21.0. Most preschoolers (76.9%) had ≤ 2 hours/day in outdoor physical activities during the week while at the weekend, 65.9% reached > 2 hours. Parents’ perception of unsafe traffic (OR = 0.39; p = 0.03) was associated with higher chances for a shorter time in outdoor physical activities both during the week and at the weekend (OR = 0.46; p = 0.04). Moreover, preschoolers’ whose parents perceive a lack of places to walk (OR = 0.33; p = 0.02) and unsafe night time (OR = 0.36; p = 0.04) are more likely to spend less time in outdoor physical activities during the week. After adjustments for sociodemographic confounders, the perception of unsafe traffic (OR = 0.26; p = 0.01) and places to walk (OR = 0.15; p = 0.01) were predictors of preschooler’s shorter time in outdoor physical activities during the week. Parents’ perception of unsafe traffic and places to walk were associated with less time in outdoor physical activities in low-income preschoolers.

Background: Higher levels of actual and perceived motor competence are purported to lead to participation in physical activity (PA). Whereas considerable work has been published regarding motor and perceived competence and body mass index (BMI), much less is known about the association of these variables considering PA and engagement in physical education settings—the focus of the present study. Method: In 600 children (aged 3–10 y), PA during physical education lessons, locomotor skills, object control skills, perceived competence, and BMI (study 1) were assessed. In a subsample of 149 children, PA, engagement, and health-related fitness were assessed (study 2). Results: Structural equation model showed that in study 1, locomotor skills were the strongest variable in the early years, and object control skills were the strongest later, in explained PA. The regression analysis, in study 2, showed that BMI, object control skills, and engagement were significantly associated with PA and that appropriate motor engagement was the best predictor of PA. Conclusion: The authors extended previous research by providing evidence that motor competence varies across childhood in explaining participation in PA, and appropriate motor engagement plays a critical role in being active during lessons and was the strongest predictor of PA. BMI and self-perception were not significant in the models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The literature has evidenced the need for validation studies of motor tests to assess motor competence (MC). Luz et al (2016) proposed a battery of tests, that is, the Motor Competence Assessment (MCA) to evaluate MC in Portuguese children and adolescents. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the evidences of this MCA validity in a sample of Brazilian preschoolers, in addition to assess the correlation between the MC results obtained through MCA and the Test of Gross Motor Development-2 (TGMD-2). 251 male and female preschool-age children from six reference Centers in Early Childhood Education in the city of João Pessoa-PB participated in study. Data were collected by using MCA and TGMD-2. The results of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) showed two models, one of them with appropriate adjustment indexes. The interclass correlation coefficients ranged between 0.77 and 0.96, which indicates an excellent reliability; the correlation between MCA and TGMD-2 was significant with a moderate magnitude (r = 0.57, p

- Abstract
Executive funtions are important for good soccer performance, requiring adaptation to changing environment and quick anticipation of your actions. In our study we sought to compare the ability to design executive functions in soccer athletes and their schoolmates (non-athletes) in a total of eighty pre-adolescents aged 11 and 12 years. The following components were evaluated; inhibitory control, working memory and cognitive flexibility. The analyzes showed differences between the athlete and non-athlete groups in the verbal-auditory inhibitory control, the Odd One Out working memory test and the Trail Making Test. In conclusion, soccer players have better inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and working memory than their peers of the same age and school class. This highlights the need for longitudinal studies to further investigate the importance of "higher level" cognitive functions for talent identification, talent development and planning of pedagogical processes in the context of football., As funções executivas são importantes para um bom desempenho no futebol, exigindo adaptação a situações em constante mudança do ambiente e rapidez na antecipação de suas ações, com consequente eficiência de planejamento.

The objectives of this narrative review were to describe: 1) the concept of self-perception of competence and the relationship with the concept of the self; 2) the characteristic changes in self-perceived competence that occur during childhood using a developmental theoretical perspective as the main reference; 3) the results of studies on the self-perceived competence of boys and girls of different ages. Methods: Studies published in electronic databases, studies identified by manually searching the references of the published studies, and the main theoretical bases of the self-concept in childhood were reviewed. Considering the theoretical basis adopted, self-perception is the judgment of individuals about their own competencies to satisfy the requirements of a task. In childhood, self-perception is an important indicator of the self, since children naturally describe themselves taking the judgment about their own competencies as a parameter. Several cognitive changes and diversity in experiences are observed between 5 and 10 years of age that guide children to move from internal and general parameters in their judgments to external sources of information in the different domains of competence with increasing age. The results of the studies suggest a plateau in the self-perceptions of competence in relation to age and higher self-perception in boys, which result respectively from the lack of experiences to optimize development and from the beliefs of gender-specific roles.

- Abstract
AbstractA set of inhibitory control tasks for the smartphone (Go/No-Go App) was developed for typical children and children with development coordination disorder (DCD). The content, construct, and criterion validity was examined. The inhibitory control Go/No-Go App test is comprised of four tasks: auditory and visual stimuli with motor and verbal responses. Six experts in neuropsychology and 252 Brazilian children (139 boys; 113 girls) participated in the study, including a subgroup of children with DCD (n = 53). A high level of agreement for clarity and pertinence was observed among the experts (Gwet’s Agreement Coefficients > .09), highlighting its content validity. Suitable Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega results were observed. The confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA) accepted the results for the Auditory-Motor (γ = .83), Visual-Motor (γ = .73), Auditory-Verbal (γ = .67) and Visual-Verbal (γ = .73) tasks. The model presented adequate adjustment indexes (Chi-square = .48, p = .787), 2/DF = .24; RMSEA = .00; GFI = .99; CFI = 1.00; AIC = 326.90. The Go/No-Go app is a test with adequate validity for the assessment of inhibition in children with DCD and may be very helpful due to the variation of the stimuli and the responses.

The aim was to investigate if the performance in physical fitness tests can be used as discriminant factor for children with probable developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and to characterize, therefore, as control parameter in reliability process of motor coordination. Participated 57 children, both genders, 9 to 12 years-old divided in two groups: DCD (n=29) and typical development (n=28) according results scored by Movement Assessment Battery for Children -2 (MABC-2). All the children performed the physical fitness tests as follow: adapted seat and reach (flexibility), push up and modified pull up tests (strength/resistance of upper limb), handgrip strength and horizontal jump (strength of lower limb). One way analysis of variance shown significant low performance in DCD group in strength and resistance tests. Furthermore, the Fisher’s linear discriminant analysis shown that strength and resistance of upper and lower limb discriminated the DCD and DT children. Strength and resistance were characterized as critical discriminant variables for analysis of physical fitness in DCD children. Since the strength is a primary requisite for motor coordination and control, these results suggest that strength and resistance tests can to serve as diagnostic and rehabilitation parameters of the DCD children.

SCALE analysis (Psychology) ,STANDARD deviations ,TEST validity ,CRONBACH'S alpha ,AKAIKE information criterion ,STATISTICAL reliability ,CONFIRMATORY factor analysis - Abstract
The pictorial scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence (PMSC) was developed to assess young children's perceptions of competence in fundamental motor skills (FMS) and in active play (AP). The objectives of the present study were to assess validity and reliability with Brazilian children. Nineteen health-related professionals and 331 children (4 to 8 years old) were enrolled in the study. Kappa concordance coefficient, intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), polychoric correlations, and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were used. The back-reverse translation prevents the bias of a single translation. Experts and professionals confirmed the clarity and pertinence of the items with high agreement scores (values >.90). Test-retest reliability results showed strong ICC (values >.90). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient showed good internal consistency (α values from.70–.85). The CFA showed appropriate fit indexes for a three-factor model (i.e., six object control, six locomotion, and six AP items) and a two-factor model (i.e., 12 FMS and six AP items). However, the two-factor model showed superior indexes (χ
2 /df = 3.1; Root Mean Square Error of Approximation =.06; Goodness-Of-Fit Index =.90; Comparative Fit Index =.91; Akaike Information Criterion = 485.8). The PMSC is a valid and reliable assessment to use in Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

SELF-perception , *GENDER differences (Psychology) , *CHILD development - Abstract
The results of the studies suggest a plateau in the self-perceptions of competence in relation to age and higher self-perception in boys, which result respectively from the lack of experiences to optimize development and from the beliefs of genderspecific roles. - Abstract
Introduction: children in situations of risk or social vulnerability several times fail to meet the expected developmental milestone. Objective: To investigate fundamental motor skills and school performance, the selfperceptions of competence, and the nutritional status of children at different ages living in social vulnerability in Brazil. Method: 211 children, both gender (87 girls, 41%), 7 to 10-years-old living in social vulnerability in Ceará, Brazil, participated in this crosss-sectional study. Children were assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development-2 for the fundamental motor skills; Test of School Performance for reading, writing, and arithmetics; Self Perception Profile for Children for the self perceptions of competence; and, the Body Mass Index, subscapular and triciptal skinfold for the nutritional status. Results: The MANOVA showed: (1) an ageeffect for jump (9 and 10 year-old), slide (7 years-old in relation to all other ages), catch (7 and 10 year-old), and roll a ball (7 years in relation to 8 and 10-year-old); (2) age-effect for School Performance, 7 year-old-children demonstrated lower performance in writing compared to 9 and 10 year-old-children, and arithmetics, reading, and overall school performance compared to all other ages; (3) no age-effect for self-perception of compentece and Body Mass Index. Conclusion: the results suggest stabilization and delays in the motor and school performance; stabilization at moderatelevels in perceived competence and higher prevalence of low weight for the young children. Childrens development seems to be negative affected by socialeconomic restrictions and public services such as compensatory interventions should be implemented for children in vulnerability. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between nutritional status and motor performance of children. Methods: The study included 287 children, 151 boys and 136 girls aged between 5 and 10 years ( = 8.1+1.7 SD) with nutritional status recommended for age (NCHS, 2002; ALVES, 2008). We evaluated the motor performance through the Test of Gross Motor Development - Second Edition - TGMD-2 (Ulrich, 2000). Results: Despite of the nutritional status a higher number of girls exhibited a poor motor performance compared to the boys. Large obese, obese and with previous poor nutrition showed higher prevalence of poor motor performance. Conclusion: The nutritional status was associated with performance of motor skills in the investigated children.

Crescimento físico ,Nutritional status ,Estado nutricional ,Escolares ,Schoolchildren ,Growth - Abstract
Physical growth and nutritional status are excellent health indicators since they permit the establishment of growth monitoring charts, especially for schoolchildren. The objective of this study was to compare the growth profile and nutritional status of schoolchildren between two samples (1997 and 2009). The data of physical growth and nutritional status obtained for the present sample of 645 schoolchildren (270 boys and 375 girls). The children were classified according to the body mass index (BMI)-for-age reference values of the WHO child growth standards. Although no significant differences in height or body weight were observed between the children studied, these variables tended to increase from the first to the second sample and in the two genders. With respect to the adequacy of BMI in boys, there was an increase in the percentage of children with low BMI-for-age, doubling of the percentage of obese children, and a reduction in the percentage of children with overweight. An increase in the number of subjects with low body weight, overweight and obesity and a decrease in the number of subjects with adequate BMI-for-age were noted among girls. In conclusion, there were no significant changes in the physical growth indicators (weight, height and BMI) over the period comprising the two samples (1997 and 2009). However, height, body weight and the number of subjects with risk of obesity and obesity tended to increase, especially among girls.

There are many tests for the evaluation of motor performance or physical fitness that take into account different criteria such as movement forms and patterns, time, distance, and repetitions of each task for the analysis of performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between motor performance and physical fitness scores in children. Fifty children of both genders aged 7 to 8 years (25 boys and 25 girls) participated in this study. The Test of Gross Motor Development - Second Edition (TGMD-2) was used for the evaluation of motor performance. Physical fitness was assessed by three specific tests proposed by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). The results showed statistical significance and weak correlations among some skills such as run, horizontal jump, hop, leap, underhand roll, and medicine ball throw. The equivalent use of both tests may not be adequate since each test has its own peculiarities in terms of assessment criteria.

Maltreatment and living in poor socioeconomic conditions during childhood may implicate in deficits on motor proficiency, nevertheless, the literature on this issue is still scarce. The goal of the study was to investigate the possible associations among manual dexterity, aiming and catching tasks, and balance tasks for children who suffers maltreatment and lived in social vulnerability. Eighty-two (82) children (08-09 years old) participated in the study. Forty-one (41) belong to the (SEV-M Group) children living in social economic vulnerability and were previously maltreated (lived in foster homes as results of parental neglect and domestic violence), and 41 belong to the (SEV Group) children living in social economical vulnerability with no history of childhood maltreatment. Children were assessed using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children –2nd Edition. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the data. The results suggest the existence of a variety of motor difficulties in the group of children who suffered from neglect and domestic violence. The statistics model showed a negative effect for children in at-risk environments (regression coefficient = −0.30) and only showed a significant effect (p = 0.04) for balance abilities. Traumatic experiences may have a negative effect on children’ balance proficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
