1. A Comparative Analysis of Wealth Index Predictions in Africa between three Multi-Source Inference Models

Abstract

Poverty map inference has become a critical focus of research, utilizing both traditional and modern techniques, ranging from regression models to convolutional neural networks applied to tabular data, satellite imagery, and networks. While much attention has been given to validating models during the training phase, the final predictions have received less scrutiny. In this study, we analyze the International Wealth Index (IWI) predicted by Lee and Braithwaite (2022) and Esp\'in-Noboa et al. (2023), alongside the Relative Wealth Index (RWI) inferred by Chi et al. (2022), across six Sub-Saharan African countries. Our analysis reveals trends and discrepancies in wealth predictions between these models. In particular, significant and unexpected discrepancies between the predictions of Lee and Braithwaite and Esp\'in-Noboa et al., even after accounting for differences in training data. In contrast, the shape of the wealth distributions predicted by Esp\'in-Noboa et al. and Chi et al. are more closely aligned, suggesting similar levels of skewness. These findings raise concerns about the validity of certain models and emphasize the importance of rigorous audits for wealth prediction algorithms used in policy-making. Abstract

Science is a collaborative endeavor in which "who collaborates with whom" profoundly influences scientists' career trajectories and success. Despite its relevance, little is known about how scholars facilitate new collaborations among their peers. In this study, we quantify brokerage in academia and study its effect on the careers of physicists worldwide. We find that early-career participation in brokerage increases later-stage involvement for all researchers, with increasing participation rates and greater career impact among more successful scientists. This cumulative advantage process suggests that brokerage contributes to the unequal distribution of success in academia. Surprisingly, this affects both women and men equally, despite women being more junior in all brokerage roles and lagging behind men's participation due to their late and slow arrival to physics. Because of its cumulative nature, promoting brokerage opportunities to early career scientists might help reduce the inequalities in academic success.

Abstract

Abstract Ending poverty in all its forms everywhere remains the number one Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Governments face challenges in measuring socioeconomic status with fine spatial resolution because traditional data collection methods, such as censuses and surveys, are time-consuming, labor-intensive, performed at long intervals, and cover only a limited population. This work is a data-driven study to analyze the digital traces left by humans in supermarket transactions and model the relationship between consumption behavior and the average per capita income, proposing a proxy to estimate socioeconomic status at the urban neighborhood level. We analyze more than 20 million supermarket shopping transactions in Guayaquil, the most populated city in Ecuador. Using customer consumption data, we created a basket graph and fed it into a graph neural network to predict neighborhood socioeconomic status. The model was trained with spectral and spatial convolutional filters using cross-validation to select the best approach for the prediction. The results show that the Chebyshev spectral convolutional filter has the highest predictive power to predict the socioeconomic status of the neighborhood, with R 2 = 0.91 $R^{2}=0.91$ . Our proposed approach contributes to measuring socioeconomic status at the neighborhood level to support policymakers in making informed decisions about resource allocation according to the needs of different geographical areas.

Abstract

Social networks have been widely studied over the last century from multiple disciplines to understand societal issues such as inequality in employment rates, managerial performance, and epidemic spread. Today, these and many more issues can be studied at global scale thanks to the digital footprints that we generate when browsing the Web or using social media platforms. Unfortunately, scientists often struggle to access to such data primarily because it is proprietary, and even when it is shared with privacy guarantees, such data is either no representative or too big. In this tutorial, we will discuss recent advances and future directions in network modeling. In particular, we focus on how to exploit synthetic networks to study real-world problems such as data privacy, spreading dynamics, algorithmic bias, and ranking inequalities. We start by reviewing different types of generative models for social networks including node-attributed and scale-free networks. Abstract

Introducción: en el día a día estamos expuestos a diferentes agentes patógenos causantes de diversas enfermedades y reacciones de nuestro cuerpo. Al pensar en ellos consideramos a bacterias, virus, hongos, protozoos y parásitos; pero difícilmente vamos a pensar en una proteína que pueda causarnos la muerte. Objetivo: describir las enfermedades producida por priones. Método: se realizó una revisión bibliográfica mediante una búsqueda de publicaciones científicas en distintas bases de datos como: PubMed, Scielo, Medline, Google Scholar, Elsevier. Para la investigación se utilizaron palabras clave como priones, enfermedades priónicas, factores de transmisión, neuropatólogías degenerativas, proteínas. Desarrollo: los factores relacionados a la transmisión de EETs como la exposición a tejido contaminado deben ser considerados para evitar la propagación de estas y mantener bajo el porcentaje de decesos, por esa razón, la medicina actual investiga protocolos enfocados en la prevención y desarrolla investigaciones que resulten en el desarrollo de tratamientos para mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes contagiados e incluso algún día lograr curarlos. Consideraciones finales: el estudio del origen y fisiopatología de los priones se encuentra determinado por la expresión del gen PRNP mutado, uno de los factores primordiales para su transmisión es la exposición a tejido contaminado, estos datos son elementos importantes para recomiendar la realización de estudios longitudinales que evalúen de manera prospectiva la posibilidad de detectar EETs en pacientes clínicos haciendo uso de marcadores proteicos específicos para PrPSc.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship is an essential driver of economic development, fostering innovation, job creation, and business growth. Universities play a crucial role in nurturing entrepreneurial capacity among students, making it imperative to identify and understand the factors influencing this capacity. This study investigates the determinants of entrepreneurial capacity among students at Milagro State University (UNEMI), utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a conceptual framework. A comprehensive measurement instrument was designed and administered to a sample of 2,570 students, and the data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings highlight that personal attitude and perceived behavioral control significantly influence students' entrepreneurial intentions, whereas subjective norms show no direct effect. These insights provide valuable guidance for the development of targeted policies and educational strategies to enhance the education of university entrepreneurship, ultimately contributing to regional economic development.

9. Interpreting wealth distribution via poverty map inference using multimodal data

Abstract

Poverty maps are essential tools for governments and NGOs to track socioeconomic changes and adequately allocate infrastructure and services in places in need. Sensor and online crowd-sourced data combined with machine learning methods have provided a recent breakthrough in poverty map inference. However, these methods do not capture local wealth fluctuations, and are not optimized to produce accountable results that guarantee accurate predictions to all sub-populations. Here, we propose a pipeline of machine learning models to infer the mean and standard deviation of wealth across multiple geographically clustered populated places, and illustrate their performance in Sierra Leone and Uganda. These models leverage seven independent and freely available feature sources based on satellite images, and metadata collected via online crowd-sourcing and social media. Our models show that combined metadata features are the best predictors of wealth in rural areas, outperforming image-based models, which are the best for predicting the highest wealth quintiles. Our results recover the local mean and variation of wealth, and correctly capture the positive yet non-monotonous correlation between them. We further demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of model transfer across countries and the effects of data recency and other biases. Abstract

To document the dynamics of biocultural heritage, we studied traditional uses of plants on a segment of the Andean Road System, or Qhapaq Ñan, within the central Andes of Ecuador, home of the Kichwa community of Nizag. Here, residents preserved a rich diversity of plants within their agricultural fields, or chakra, of the Andean landscapes, upholding a culture steeped in traditional knowledge. Wild and domesticated plants are a cornerstone for the community, prompting the development of ethnobotanical management strategies with a conservation approach. The diverse plant uses aim to revalue their culture, fortify their self-identification as an indigenous community, and ensure the transmission of ancestral knowledge. This research aims to ascertain the ethnobotanical applications of this venerable community. Employing participatory action research, semistructured interviews were conducted with 43 community informants to gather ethnobotanical data on the flora applied within their territory, spanning categories such as food, agriculture, crafts, living fences, construction, fuel, ornamental, environmental, technological, and medicinal services. The findings indicate that age, rather than educational level and gender, significantly influences the variation in plant usage knowledge. In total, 142 plant species were cataloged, comprising herbs (58%), shrubs (23%), trees (15%), and climbers (4%). The most represented families were Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, and Poaceae. Notably, 96% of these species provide some type of environmental service or fulfill a niche within the socioecological system. Medicinal uses were reported for 89% of the plants, while 56% served agricultural purposes, primarily in fertilizer production and forage. Additionally, 44% of the plants are utilized as food, typically consumed fresh. Among the medicinal plants, leaves are the most used part (58%), prepared as infusions and poultices. The prevalent ailments addressed include respiratory and urinary system conditions, with Borago officinalis, Carica pentagona, Vasconcellea pubescens, and Origanum mejorana being the most frequently employed plants.

Pfeifer-Weber-Christian Disease (PWCD) is a rare chronic inflammatory condition characterized by recurrent painful subcutaneous nodules and systemic manifestations. Long-term corticosteroid therapy, essential for managing PWCD, predisposes patients to complications such as osteoarthritis and avascular necrosis, often necessitating joint replacement surgeries. This report discusses a 38-year-old woman with a 15-year history of PWCD who underwent sequential knee and hip arthroplasty due to severe joint degeneration. The patient presented with debilitating pain, significant functional impairment, and advanced degenerative changes in the left knee and right hip. A multidisciplinary team provided comprehensive perioperative care to address the complexities of chronic inflammation, immunosuppression, and poor bone quality. This case highlights the feasibility of joint replacement in PWCD patients when a multidisciplinary approach and meticulous planning are applied. It underscores the importance of individualized surgical strategies and extended follow-up to optimize outcomes in complex cases.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship serves as a pivotal force for innovation and sustainable development. Today, its influence on wealth generation, job creation, and national economic growth is indisputable. Understanding the entrepreneurial profiles and capacities of future professionals has become a priority within both academic and business realms. While there is substantial research evidence highlighting the impact of entrepreneurship on the business sector, studies specifically examining university contexts worldwide are limited, particularly in developing nations. This study aimed to characterize the entrepreneurial capacity profile of university students in Ecuador, a developing country in South America. Drawing from a literature review, we developed an instrument adapted from the theory of planned behavior (TPB), incorporating personal attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control as determinants of entrepreneurial intention. This framework measures entrepreneurial capacity, integrating prominent entrepreneurial competencies identified in the literature as part of personal factors: problem-solving, creativity, financial management, leadership, negotiation, decision-making, self-confidence, and resilience. The instrument was administered to a sample of university students in Ecuador. Using statistical methods, we analyzed the relationships between demographics (age and gender), educational background (parents' education and occupation), the entrepreneurial ecosystem, and TPB factors-including personal attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control-on entrepreneurial intention. Key findings reveal that age, gender, parents' educational background, occupation, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem significantly influence the entrepreneurial intentions of university students. Within their entrepreneurial profiles, self-confidence, creativity, and decision-making skills emerged prominently, while financial management, negotiation, and problem-solving showed potential areas for development. These results offer valuable insights for updating academic programs to foster entrepreneurial intention in Ecuador and other developing countries. Theoretically, this study reinforces TPB as a foundational framework in entrepreneurship research, particularly underscoring the moderating role of sociodemographic variables such as age, gender, and educational level. Practically, it provides a quantitative measurement tool and a control variable for future studies aiming to identify entrepreneurial skills within regional contexts.

16. Rituximab in young adults with steroids dependence nephrotic syndrome: a case series

Abstract

Nos propusimos evaluar la respuesta al tratamiento con rituximab (RTX) en adultos con síndrome nefro?tico corticodependiente (SNCD) y recaedor frecuente (SNRF). Se analizaron pacientes con diagno?stico de SNCD y SNRF en la infancia que tenían estudio histolo?gico renal y recibieron RTX siendo adolescentes o adultos jo?venes (> 16 años). Analizamos características clínicas y analíticas de los pacientes y su evolucio?n. Se incluyeron 12 pacientes (n = 8 con lesio?n glomerular mínima, n = 4 con glomeruloesclerosis focal y segmentaria). La mediana de exposicio?n a esteroides previa al RTX fue 19 años (rango: 2-31.5 años). El SN fue diagnosticado con una mediana de edad de 3 años (rango: 1.5-6.0 años) y la mediana de edad al recibir la primera dosis de RTX fue 24 años (rango: 16-42 años). Luego del tratamiento con RTX, y al final del seguimiento, todos los pacientes lograron remisio?n sin fármacos inmunosupresores. La tasa de recaídas luego del tratamiento con RTX disminuyo? ocho veces (8.7; IC95%: 2.1-40.5) y la dosis de prednisona promedio se redujo (19.6 ± 17.5 mg vs. 4.6 ± 8.6 mg/dl; p = 0.0027). El rituximab fue eficaz en reducir el número de recaídas y la carga de esteroides en adultos jo?venes con SNCD o SNRF, con un adecuado perfil de seguridad.

Resumen: La displasia del desarrollo de cadera es causante de aproximadamente un tercio de coxartrosis secundarias. Las alteraciones de la anatomía dificultan la colocación de prótesis total de cadera en su posición anatómica y que la misma sea estable a largo plazo; hay varias técnicas para lograr ese objetivo. En el presente trabajo utilizamos autoinjerto de la cabeza femoral (shelf graft o techo armado), para mejorar la cobertura del componente acetabular con resultados favorables.Materiales y métodos Se incluyeron 16 casos en 14 pacientes con diagnóstico de displasia del desarrollo de cadera (13 mujeres y un hombre), la edad media fue de 44,3 años (rango 35-68 años), con un seguimiento medio de 7 años (rango 1-15 años). Todos los casos fueron valorados clínica y radiográficamente, para demostrar la osteointegración del injerto y los resultados funcionales a mediano plazo. Resultados: Todo los componentes acetabulares se colocaron en posición anatómica (técnica de Ranawat), el porcentaje medio de cobertura del hueso huésped fue de 54,53% (rango 43,28-79,05%), obteniéndose una cobertura adicional con el injerto óseo de 45,13%. Osteointegración del injerto del 100% a las 12 semanas, reabsorción del injerto a partir del sexto mes, estabilizándose al tercer año postoperatorio. Solo se reporta un caso de luxación, ningún caso de infección, aflojamiento, osificación heterotópica o revisión. Conclusión: Este procedimiento ha demostrado buenos resultados funcionales a medio plazo con osteointegración del 100%, a pesar de presentarse casos de reabsorción ósea severa del injerto que no compromete la estabilidad de la prótesis. Abstract: Developmental dysplasia of the hip is the cause of approximately one third of secondary coxarthrosis. Anatomy alterations make it difficult to place a total hip prosthesis in its anatomical position and for it to be stable in the long term; there are several techniques to achieve this goal. In the present work, we used autograft of the femoral head (shelf graft or reinforced roof), to improve the coverage of the acetabular component with favorable results. Materials ad methods: Sixteen cases were included in 14 patients with a diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip (13 women and one man), the mean age was 44.3 years (range 35–68 years), with a mean follow-up of 7 years (range 1–15 years). All the cases were evaluated clinically and radiographically, to demonstrate the osseointegration of the graft and the functional results in the medium term. Results: All the acetabular components were placed in anatomical position (Ranawat technique), the mean percentage of host bone coverage was 54.53% (range 43.28–79.05%), obtaining additional coverage with the bone graft of 45.13%. Osseointegration of the graft of 100% at 12 weeks, resorption of the graft from the sixth month, stabilizing in the third postoperative year. Only one case of dislocation is reported, no cases of infection, loosening, heterotopic ossification or revision. Conclusion: This procedure has shown good functional results in the medium term with 100% osseointegration, despite cases of severe bone resorption of the graft that does not compromise the stability of the prosthesis.

Abstract

Pregnant women with p phenotype, who lack antigens P, P1, and Pk, spontaneously form anti-PP1Pk antibodies whose primary target is the placenta. The risk of miscarriage in these women is 50%?70% and reaches 87% in the second trimester. The therapies aim to reduce the titer of antibodies early in pregnancy. They also have risk of hemolytic transfusion reaction, with very few compatible red blood cell donors in the world. In this study, we present a case of successful pregnancy managed with autologous blood donations and plasmapheresis.

Abstract

Network-based people recommendation algorithms are widely employed on the Web to suggest new connections in social media or professional platforms. While such recommendations bring people together, the feedback loop between the algorithms and the changes in network structure may exacerbate social biases. These biases include rich-get-richer effects, filter bubbles, and polarization. However, social networks are diverse complex systems and recommendations may affect them differently, depending on their structural properties. In this work, we explore five people recommendation algorithms by systematically applying them over time to different synthetic networks. In particular, we measure to what extent these recommendations change the structure of bi-populated networks and show how these changes affect the minority group. Our systematic experimentation helps to better understand when link recommendation algorithms are beneficial or harmful to minority groups in social networks. In particular, our findings suggest that, while all algorithms tend to close triangles and increase cohesion, all algorithms except Node2Vec are prone to favor and suggest nodes with high in-degree. This equipment can minimize the risk of serious accidents or severe health hazards. The objective of the present research project is to design an armband with an accurate location tracking system. This is of particular importance for individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, who frequently leave their homes and are unable to find their way back. The proposed armband also includes a fingerprint identification system that allows only authorized personnel to use it. Furthermore, in hospitals and healthcare facilities the biometric identification system can be used to trace periodic medical or nursing visits. This process improves the reliability and transparency of healthcare. The test results indicate that the armband functions in accordance with the desired design specifications, with performance evaluation of the main features including fall detection, where a hit rate of 100% was obtained, a fingerprint recognition test demonstrating accuracy from 88% to 100% on high-quality samples, and a GPS tracking test determining position with a difference of between 1.8 and 2.1 m. The proposed solution may be of benefit to healthcare professionals, supported housing providers, elderly people as target users, or their family members.

Abstract

Los recursos didácticos digitales son facilitares del proceso de enseñanza aprendizaje a los cuales se les deriva una analítica del aprendizaje que corrobore sus ponderaciones de crecimiento en los estudiantes. El objetivo de la investigación es aplicar la analítica del aprendizaje utilizando el recurso didáctico digital, Canva, para la transformación de la calidad académica en la asignatura de Estudios Sociales. Se utilizó una metodología cuantitativa por la finalidad que persigue la investigación la cual demuestra que el recurso didáctico digitales mejora la calidad de la docencia, los métodos teóricos fueron el analítico sintético y el inductivo deductivo y desde la empírea, los métodos estadísticos matemáticos. Los resultados fundamentales fueron que las actividades donde se utilizó, Canva, como recurso didáctico digital los resultados en la calidad de las evaluaciones fueron superior a los obtenidos cuando se utilizó la metodología tradicional, debido a la motivación y a los métodos activos de enseñanza utilizados con el medio de enseñanza.

28. Inequality and Inequity in Network-based Ranking and Recommendation Algorithms

Abstract

Though algorithms promise many benefits including efficiency, objectivity and accuracy, they may also introduce or amplify biases. Here we study two well-known algorithms, namely PageRank and Who-to-Follow (WTF), and show to what extent their ranks produce inequality and inequity when applied to directed social networks. To this end, we propose a directed network model with preferential attachment and homophily (DPAH) and demonstrate the influence of network structure on the rank distributions of these algorithms. Our main findings suggest that (i) inequality is positively correlated with inequity, (ii) inequality is driven by the interplay between preferential attachment, homophily, node activity and edge density, and (iii) inequity is driven by the interplay between homophily and minority size. In particular, these two algorithms reduce, replicate and amplify the representation of minorities in top ranks when majorities are homophilic, neutral and heterophilic, respectively. Moreover, when this representation is reduced, minorities may improve their visibility in the rank by connecting strategically in the network. For instance, by increasing their out-degree or homophily when majorities are also homophilic. 33. Floristic Composition and Diversity of a Transect in a Locality of the Lowland Evergreen Forest of the Amazon of Cuyabeno City

Abstract

Abstract The present research determined the high diversity and structure of the lowland evergreen forest of the Amazon in a locality (Rey de los Andes) of Cuyabeno city, since there is no updated information on this important biome. The linear transect methodology of 0.1 hectares was applied along the river and separated 2 m from the edge, all trees and shrubs with a diameter at breast height greater than 10 cm were measured, fertile botanical samples were collected and were processed and identified in the CHEP Herbarium. A total of 86 individuals were obtained between trees and shrubs distributed in 20 families, 39 genera, and 41 species, and a basal area of 10.95 m2 was obtained. The dominant family was Fabaceae with seven genera and the most frequent species were Astrocaryum urostachys, Celtis sp., and Leonia crassa. The highest importance value index was 15.56% for Astrocaryum urostachys and 10.33% for Otoba glycycarpa and the Simpson Diversity Index was 0.96. The diameters obtained were classified into 3 diameter classes, where Class I was made up of 68 individuals, which represents 79.07% of the total. It is concluded that the forest of the Rey de los Andes community has a high diversity of tree and shrub species. Likewise, considering the type of vegetation found, list of species, site, and diameters obtained, it can be stated that it is a well-preserved forest.

Abstract

In greenhouse cultivation of stock (Matthiola incana), the main causative agent of its death is the fungus Fusarium sp., especially in the early phenological stages, resulting in significant losses during the first four weeks of cultivation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate phytosanitary control techniques (chemical, biological, and antibiotics) to reduce Fusarium sp. infection in stock (Matthiola incana) cultivation. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with five treatments (control; chemical products; biological products, antibiotics, and product combinations) and three replications. The chemical active ingredients used were aluminum phosphite, iprodione, captan, and Hymexazol. Biological solutions included Trichoderma sp. and Bacillus subtilis, while antibiotics used were Weed Pirocontrole, Kasugamicin, Polioxin B, Azoxystrobin, and Kresoxym methyl. Additionally, product combinations were evaluated, such as Fosetyl aluminum, Bacillus subtilis, Polioxin B, Hymexazol, and Azoxystrobin. Control efficacy was measured based on the severity of fungal growth in culture, while mortality represented the loss rate at the end of the experiment. The combined treatment of techniques was superior, with a mortality rate of 13.77%, compared to the 63.00% recorded in the absolute control group. These results underscore the importance of an integrated approach to Fusarium sp. control in stock cultivation, emphasizing the effectiveness of combining different phytosanitary techniques to minimize losses and promote successful production.

Abstract

The objective of this case study is to identify the problems that the PROLASE company has regarding its inventories and to propose an inventory management and control plan covered by the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) for SMEs. The applied methodology had a mixed approach: Bibliographic documentary sources were used, and a survey was applied to employees. The records were made one hundred percent manually and empirically. According to the results obtained from the application of the instrument, it was concluded that the company does not have a management model to administer and control inventories in its entirety, which causes deficiencies in its processes and procedures. The inventory management policy is important to mitigate the risks inherent to the organization.

Abstract

IntroductionThe humoral response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and boosters in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) is heterogeneous and depends on immunosuppression status. There is no validated immune measurement associated with serological response in clinical practice. Multicolor flow cytometric immunophenotyping could be useful for measuring immune response. This study aimed to study B- and T-cell compartments through Standardized EuroFlow PID Orientation after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and their association with IgG SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity status after two doses or boosters.MethodsWe conducted a multicenter prospective study to evaluate humoral response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in KTRs. Heterologous regimen: two doses of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 and two boosters of BNT162b2 mRNA (n=75). Homologous vaccination: two doses of BNT162b2 mRNA and one BNT162b2 mRNA booster (n=13). Booster doses were administrated to KTRs without taking into account their IgG SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity status. Peripheral blood samples were collected 30 days after the second dose and after the last heterologous or homologous booster. A standardized EuroFlow PID Orientation Tube (PIDOT) and a supervised automated analysis were used for immune monitoring cellular subsets after boosters.ResultsA total of 88 KTRs were included and divided into three groups according to the time of the first detected IgG SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity: non-responders (NRs, n=23), booster responders (BRs, n=41), and two-dose responders (2DRs, n=24). The NR group was more frequent on mycophenolate than the responder groups (NRs, 96%; BRs, 80%; 2DRs, 42%; p=0.000). Switched memory B cells in the 2DR group were higher than those in the BR and NR groups (medians of 30, 17, and 10 cells/ul, respectively; p=0.017). Additionally, the absolute count of central memory/terminal memory CD8 T cells was higher in the 2DR group than in the BR and NR groups. (166, 98, and 93 cells/ul, respectively; p=0.041). The rest of the T-cell populations studied did not show a statistical difference.Conclusionswitched memory B cells and memory CD8 T-cell populations in peripheral blood were associated with the magnitude of the humoral response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Boosters increased IgG anti-SARS-CoV-2 levels, CM/TM CD8 T cells, and switched MBCs in patients with seropositivity after two doses. Interestingly, no seropositivity after boosters was associated with the use of mycophenolate and a lower number of switched MBCs and CM/TM CD8 T cells in peripheral blood.

Abstract

Los ríos son elementos fundamentales en las poblaciones y a la vez representan riesgos devengados de eventos extremos. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivos identificar los principales efectos ambientales ocurridos por el desbordamiento del Rio Pindo Grande en la parroquia Shell y conocer el estado de preparación ante emergencias de la población. Se elaboró un formato de encuesta que recopila información socioeconómica, vivienda, servicios y afectaciones por las crecidas del rio que se aplicó a 135 personas ubicadas en barrios aledaños al rio. Se determinó que la mayoría de la población no ha sido capacitada para emergencias y la linterna como el equipo más reportado y la principal afectación fue sobre las dotaciones de agua y servicio eléctrico. Se concluye que las zonas aledañas al río se encuentran expuestas a riesgos por crecidas y la mayoría de la población no ha sido capacitada para el manejo de emergencias.

Abstract

As evidence supporting the effectiveness of mental health and psychosocial interventions grows, more research is needed to understand optimal strategies for improving their implementation in diverse contexts. We conducted a qualitative process evaluation of a multicomponent psychosocial intervention intended to promote well-being among refugee, migrant and host community women in three diverse contexts in Ecuador and Panamá. The objective of this study is to describe the relationships among implementation determinants, strategies and outcomes of this community-based psychosocial intervention. The five implementation strategies used in this study included stakeholder engagement, promoting intervention adaptability, group and community-based delivery format, task sharing and providing incentives. We identified 10 adaptations to the intervention and its implementation, most of which were made during pre-implementation. Participants (n = 77) and facilitators (n = 30) who completed qualitative interviews reported that these strategies largely improved the implementation of the intervention across key outcomes and aligned with the study’s intervention and implementation theory of change models. Participants and facilitators also proposed additional strategies for improving reach, implementation and maintenance of this community-based psychosocial intervention.
