Abstract

This paper reports on the development of a technology involving $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -enriched scintillating bolometers, compatible with the goals of CUPID, a proposed next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Large mass ( $$\sim 1~\hbox {kg}$$ ∼ 1 kg ), high optical quality, radiopure $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -containing zinc and lithium molybdate crystals have been produced and used to develop high performance single detector modules based on 0.2–0.4 kg scintillating bolometers. In particular, the energy resolution of the lithium molybdate detectors near the Q-value of the double-beta transition of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo (3034 keV) is 4–6 keV FWHM. The rejection of the $$\alpha $$ α -induced dominant background above 2.6 MeV is better than $$8\sigma $$ 8 σ . Less than $$10~\upmu \hbox {Bq/kg}$$ 10 μ Bq/kg activity of $$^{232}\hbox {Th}\, (^{228}\hbox {Th})$$ 232 Th ( 228 Th ) and $$^{226}\hbox {Ra}$$ 226 Ra in the crystals is ensured by boule recrystallization. The potential of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -enriched scintillating bolometers to perform high sensitivity double-beta decay searches has been demonstrated with only $$10~\hbox {kg}\times \hbox {d}$$ 10 kg × d exposure: the two neutrino double-beta decay half-life of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo has been measured with the up-to-date highest accuracy as $$T_{1/2}$$ T 1 / 2 = [6.90 ± 0.15(stat.) ± 0.37(syst.)] $$\times ~10^{18}~\hbox {years}$$ × 10 18 years . Both crystallization and detector technologies favor lithium molybdate, which has been selected for the ongoing construction of the CUPID-0/Mo demonstrator, containing several kg of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo .

Abstract

We introduce the `Joule stepping' technique, whereupon a constantly-biased bolometer has its bias voltage modified by a small additional step. We demonstrate this technique using a composite NTD semiconductor bolometer and a pulsing device which sends an extra step in voltage. We demonstrate the results of the technique over a range of bias voltages at 100, 200, and 300 mK. We find that Joule stepping allows us to directly measure long thermal tails with low amplitudes in the bolometer response, and could be a useful tool for quickly and easily understanding response functions of bolometric detectors. We also show that the derivative of the Joule step is equivalent to the bolometer response to a $\delta$-pulse (or Joule pulse), which allows for greater understanding of fast transient behaviour., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Low Temperature Physics

Abstract

International audience; Cosmology space missions have been known to be particularly sensitive to systematic effects arising from the interaction between cosmic rays and highly sensitive detectors below 200 mK. To remove this signal, one must first understand the deposition and dissipation of energy into these detectors. Using a well-known NTD germanium composite bolometer, we simulate the effect of cosmic rays using a radioactive source in the laboratory. Through analysis of experimental data, we find that the glitch signal shape is a function of incoming particle position, as well as the incoming particle energy. We report also on nonlinear effects in the fit, in order to lay the groundwork towards a new physical model for this energy propagation in the bolometer.

Abstract

Two scintillating bolometers of LiF (33 g) and Al2O3 (50 g) at 20 mK, inside a lead shielding at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory, were irradiated with neutrons from a source of 252Cf. The analysis of nuclear recoils registered by sapphire and $({\text {n}}, {\alpha })$ captures by 6Li shows the feasibility of these cryogenic devices to measure the spectral flux of a neutron field. Data unfolding was done assuming that the spectral flux is a piecewise constant function defined on six energy groups. It can be solved by using non-negative least squares without additional assumptions on the neutron flux. The model provides consistent results with the spectra of the observed events in bolometers, giving a fast neutron flux of $\Phi (\text {E}>\text {0.1}~{\text {MeV}})= \text {0.20}~{\text {n}}~{\text {s}}^{-\text {1}}{\text {cm}}^{-\text {2}}$ with a 15% uncertainty after 3 hours of live time. After our analysis, it can be concluded that nuclear recoils in sapphire are more useful than $({\text {n}}, {\alpha })$ captures in LiF for spectrometry of fast neutrons.

Abstract

Scintillating bolometers, in which the simultaneous detection of light and heat allows to discriminate the nature of the interacting particle, are one of the most promising detectors for Dark Matter (DM) searches. One main advantage is the wide range of materials that can be used as target, that could provide a key for WIMP identification. The EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) project aims to install 1 ton of cryogenic detectors ( Ge and solid state scintillators) to explore the spin independent (SI) scalar cross sections down to the 10-46 cm2 region. In this frame, the ROSEBUD collaboration is developing low temperature scintillating materials to be installed at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory. Work on 6 Li and 10 B based targets, that could allow to monitor the thermal and fast neutron flux within the experiments, is also presented.

6. BOLUX: A cryogenic electrical-substitution radiometer as high accuracy primary detector in the 150–11,000eV range

Abstract

We have measured the electrical and radiometric properties of a cryogenic absolute radiometer BOLUX (Bolometre pour l’Utilisation dans le domaine de rayons X). BOLUX is intended for use as a primary detector standard for radiant power measurement of a synchrotron beam from EUV to X-ray spectral ranges. The absolute radiometer uses a composite bolometer with a built-in electrical heating element. The bolometer's absorber, optimized for beam diameter and for X-ray absorption, is coupled both to a Ge doped thermometer and to the electrical resistance calibrator with similar thermal paths so that electrical and radiant heating are equivalent. This device operates between 4 K the liquid helium temperature, and 1.25 K obtained by pumping helium. The main advantage of BOLUX over other radiometers is its portability (weight 12 kg) which means it can be used with any synchrotron beamline. The second advantage is its very small time constant (20 ms) compared with other apparatus (typically a few min). We can use it in DC mode or in AC mode and Alpha sources calibration experiments have already been realized. We have measured synchrotron radiant power at the laboratory of the P hysikalisch- T echnische B undesanstalt (PTB) at the Berlin electron storage ring BESSY II. We reported experiments in DC mode and showed the possibility to study the drift and the temporal stability at the exit of a synchrotron beamline. For a helium bath temperature of 1.33 K and in the spectral range of 150 eV–11 keV, we have measured a high limit of detection (in 1 s integrated) to be 10 −10 W, with a DC responsivity of 1.3×10 5 V/W, spatial nonuniformity over 4 mm diameter below 1% and possibility to use over five decades between a few nW and 100 μW with a good linearity ( [1] ; we have observed a standard deviation between the two detectors lower than the total uncertainty of the detectors.

Abstract

In order to optimize sapphire as a cryogenic scintillation-phonon detector for dark matter, Al 2 O 3 : Ti crystals with different concentrations of doping have been studied using continuous X-ray excitation in the 30–300 K temperature range. Light yields vary by 20% for Ti concentrations between 10 and 1000 ppm at room temperature; they roughly double as the crystals are cooled from room temperature to 45 K. From the analysis of the change in the X-ray luminescence spectra of Al 2 O 3 with the concentration of Ti, it is concluded that the well-known blue emission of Ti-doped Al 2 O 3 is due to the radiative decay of F-centers. Recommendations are given for improving the performance of Al 2 O 3 scintillators.

Abstract

We have fabricated and studied MOCVD grown quantum cascade devices operating in the far infrared frequency range (at about 4 THz). The devices are processed into double metal waveguides, in order to investigate the Purcell effect on the spontaneous emission rate due to the electromagnetic field confinement. Intersubband electroluminescence is outcoupled by a metallic grating, which also serves as the cavity upper mirror. The power collected per quantum cascade period increases when the device thickness is reduced, indicating a Purcell spontaneous emission enhancement factor up to about 50. Abstract

International audience; The LUMINEU (Luminescent Underground Molybdenum Investigation for NEUtrino mass and nature) project envisages a high-sensitivity search for neutrinoless double beta (0 nu 2 beta) decay of Mo-100 with the help of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystals. One of the crucial points for the successful performance of this experiment is the development of a protocol for producing high quality large mass ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators with extremely high internal radiopurity. Here we report a significant progress in the development of large volume ZnMoO4 crystalline boules (with mass up to 1 kg) from deeply purified materials. We present and discuss the results achieved with two ZnMoO4 samples (with mass of about 0.3 kg each): one is a precursor of the LUMINEU project, while the other one was produced in the framework of LUMINEU with an improved purification / crystallization procedure. The two crystals were measured deep underground as scintillating bolometers in the EDELWEISS dilution refrigerator at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France) protected by a rock overburden corresponding to 4800 m w.e. The results indicate that both tested crystals are highly radiopure. However, the advanced LUMINEU sample shows a clear improvement with respect to the precursor, exhibiting only a trace internal contamination related with Po-210 at the level of 1 mBq/kg, while the activity of Ra-226 and Th-228 is below 0.005 mBq/kg. This demonstrates that the LUMINEU purification and crystal-growth procedures are very efficient and leads to radiopurity levels which exceedingly satisfy not only the LUMINEU goals but also the requirements of a next-generation 0 nu 2 beta experiment.

10. Scintillating and particle discrimination properties of selected crystals for low-temperature bolometers: from LiF to BGO

Abstract

Selected crystals have been investigated at 20 mK for their properties of scintillation produced under irradiation. A scintillation signal is found in preliminary studies of YAP:Ce, GSO:Ce, CaF 2 :Eu and Al 2 O 3 :Ti crystals thanks to high sensitivity light detectors. The full mixed “light-and-heat” bolometric technique has been applied to further characterize materials already employed in rare event researches: CaWO 4 , BGO, undoped Al 2 O 3 (sapphire). All these crystals show powerful discrimination properties for α/γ or nuclear recoil/γ detection, with a special mention to undoped Al 2 O 3 , hitherto untested, which revealed an unexpected strong light emission. A weaker light signal has been found on LiF and TeO 2 bolometers too, sufficient to separate alpha from gamma events in these crystals.

Abstract

The Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) surveyed the sky continuously from August 2009 to January 2012. Its noise and sensitivity performance were excellent, but the rate of cosmic ray impacts on the HFI detectors was unexpectedly high. Furthermore, collisions of cosmic rays with the focal plane produced transient signals in the data (glitches) with a wide range of characteristics. A study of cosmic ray impacts on the HFI detector modules has been undertaken to categorize and characterize the glitches, to correct the HFI time-ordered data, and understand the residual effects on Planck maps and data products. This paper presents an evaluation of the physical origins of glitches observed by the HFI detectors. In order to better understand the glitches observed by HFI in flight, several ground-based experiments were conducted with flight-spare HFI bolometer modules. The experiments were conducted between 2010 and 2013 with HFI test bolometers in different configurations using varying particles and impact energies. The bolometer modules were exposed to 23 MeV protons from the Orsay IPN TANDEM accelerator, and to $^{241}$Am and $^{244}$Cm $\alpha$-particle and $^{55}$Fe radioactive X-ray sources. The calibration data from the HFI ground-based preflight tests were used to further characterize the glitches and compare glitch rates with statistical expectations under laboratory conditions. Test results provide strong evidence that the dominant family of glitches observed in flight are due to cosmic ray absorption by the silicon die substrate on which the HFI detectors reside. Glitch energy is propagated to the thermistor by ballistic phonons, while there is also a thermal diffusion contribution. The implications of these results for future satellite missions, especially those in the far-infrared to sub-millimetre and millimetre regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, are discussed., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) has been surveying the sky continuously from the second Lagrangian point (L2) between August 2009 and January 2012. It operates with 52 high impedance bolometers cooled at 100mK in a range of frequency between 100 GHz and 1THz with unprecedented sensivity, but strong coupling with cosmic radiation. At L2, the particle flux is about 5 $cm^{-2} s^{-1}$ and is dominated by protons incident on the spacecraft. Protons with an energy above 40MeV can penetrate the focal plane unit box causing two different effects: glitches in the raw data from direct interaction of cosmic rays with detectors (producing a data loss of about 15% at the end of the mission) and thermal drifts in the bolometer plate at 100mK adding non-gaussian noise at frequencies below 0.1Hz. The HFI consortium has made strong efforts in order to correct for this effect on the time ordered data and final Planck maps. This work intends to give a view of the physical explanation of the glitches observed in the HFI instrument in-flight. To reach this goal, we performed several ground-based experiments using protons and $\alpha$ particles to test the impact of particles on the HFI spare bolometers with a better control of the environmental conditions with respect to the in-flight data. We have shown that the dominant part of glitches observed in the data comes from the impact of cosmic rays in the silicon die frame supporting the micro-machinced bolometric detectors propagating energy mainly by ballistic phonons and by thermal diffusion. Abstract

Despite that it is widely used as a scintillator at room temperature, the hygroscopicity of NaI com- plicates its handling and limits its application for many purposes, for example as a cryogenic detector. To overcome this problem we study coating materials that can act as humidity barriers, in particular parylene, a polymer that can be deposited in very radiopure, thin and conformal layers. In this work, several NaI(Tl) samples coated with 2-5 µm parylene-C were tested at low temperature. Luminescence spectra under X-ray excitation are presented at several temperatures as well as the light output vs temperature at 1.5-300 K. Several thermoluminescence peaks were observed at around 60, 95 and 150 K during warm up to room temperature. The mechanical resistance of the coating under thermal cycles was also investigated, and we observed a degra- dation of the optical appearance and the light output after cooling down to about 100 mK, which compromises the reusability of the samples.

Abstract

We have designed and built a large-throughput dual channel photometer, Diabolo. This photometer is dedicated to the observation of millimetre continuum diffuse sources, and in particular, of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and of anisotropies of the 3K background. We describe the optical layout and filtering system of the instrument, which uses two bolometric detectors for simultaneous observations in two frequency channels at 1.2 and 2.1 mm. The bolometers are cooled to a working temperature of 0.1 K provided by a compact dilution cryostat. The photometric and angular responses of the instrument are measured in the laboratory. First astronomical light was detected in March 1995 at the focus of the new Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory (MITO) Telescope. The established sensitivity of the system is of 7 mK_RJ s^1/2$. For a typical map of at least 10 beams, with one hour of integration per beam, one can achieve the rms values of y_SZ ~ 7 10^-5 and the 3K background anisotropy Delta T/T ~ 7 10^-5, in winter conditions. We also report on a novel bolometer AC readout circuit which allows for the first time total power measurements on the sky. This technique alleviates (but does not forbid) the use of chopping with a secondary mirror. Abstract

We describe how the problem of measuring the neutrino mass led us to the development of low-temperature calorimetry. The search for a “17-keV neutrino” concluded with a negative result, but a wide range of applications are now carried on by us and other groups in the fields of x-ray astronomy, recoil measurements of dark matter particles, high precision particle spectrometry, specific heat determinations, neutron detection, and rare decay studies. The masses of the bolometers (calorimeters) extend from 1 mg to 1 kg, nearly as large as for quantum detectors. By lowering the temperature into the 10- 20-mK range, calorimetry is on its way to substantially surpassing the high precision of particle metrology obtainable with the quantum detectors. Calorimeter developments and perspectives are discussed.

International audience; We present the crystal growth of centimeter-sized 6Li6Eu(10BO3)3 and Li6(Eu,Gd)(BO3)3 single crystals by combined Czochralski and Kyropoulos methods, initiated on specifically oriented seeds, with a heretofore unexplored concentration range for heat-scintillation cryogenic bolometers application. The crystal structure and lattice thermal expansion of the former, obtained for the first time by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the spectroscopic characterizations together with a consistent set of related thermodynamical properties measurements (magnetic susceptibility, specific heat), also unknown to date, are discussed. Finally, preliminary scintillation measurements at low temperature between 300 and 1100 nm under X-ray excitation are shown.

Abstract

Dark matter direct search experiments with scintillators need an accurate knowledge of Light Relative Efficiency Factors (REF) between electron and nuclear recoils to estimate the energy of the recoiling nuclei from the scintillation signal (if the light signal is used with this purpose) or to implement an effective background rejection based on the comparison of the scintillation with ionization or heat signals (if the light signal is used for particle discrimination). The Light REF between α and γ particles is required in some nuclear physics applications of scintillators like rare α decay searches, internal radiopurity assessment and some double beta decay searches. Two scintillating bolometers of BGO and Al 2 O 3 were operated at 20 mK and exposed to fast neutrons, gamma rays, α particles and heavy nuclei. We measured their Light REF between γ and α particles and between electron and neutron induced nuclear recoils as a function of the deposited energy. We also measured the Light REF for O and Np ions in BGO. Results obtained for the different Light REFs were unsuccessfully compared with calculations based on a simple semi-empirical approach (with only one fitting parameter) proposed by Tretyak.

Abstract

The LUMINEU program aims at performing a pilot experiment on neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo using radiopure ZnMoO4 crystals operated as scintillating bolometers. Growth of high quality radiopure crystals is a complex task, since there are no commercially available molybdenum compounds with the required levels of purity and radioactive contamination. This paper discusses approaches to purify molybdenum and synthesize compound for high quality radiopure ZnMoO4 crystal growth. A combination of a double sublimation (with addition of zinc molybdate) with subsequent recrystallization in aqueous solutions (using zinc molybdate as a collector) was used. Zinc molybdate crystals up to 1.5 kg were grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique, their optical, luminescent, diamagnetic, thermal and bolometric properties were tested., Comment: Contribution to Proc. of Int. Abstract

NaI(Tl) is a widely-used scintillator at room temperature, and it is particularly interesting as a target for dark matter searches. Its hygroscopic character however makes it unsuitable for many applications, in particular for bolometric particle detection at very low temperature. Despite that, a NaI scintillating bolometer would provide unique features for dark matter detection, like β / γ background rejection through particle discrimination and thermal quenching factors for nuclear with respect to electron recoils close to one. With the long-term goal of developing a scintillating NaI bolometer, we have tested NaI(Tl) crystals coated by vapor-deposited poly-p-xylylene (parylene) and studied their optical and mechanical behavior in the mK range. We present X-ray excited scintillation spectra of a parylene-coated NaI(Tl) sample at 1.5, 4 and 77 K, and measurements of the light output as function of the temperature over the 1.5–300 K range. At 1.5 K the wavelength of maximum emission is observed at 325 nm. Thermoluminescence peaks are found at around 60, 95 and 150 K. Tests of mechanical and optical resistance to thermal cycles of 45 g parylene-coated NaI(Tl) cylinders are also presented, and the adequacy and effectiveness of this coating technique is discussed.

Abstract

The only naturally occurring isotope of bismuth, 209Bi, is commonly regarded as the heaviest stable isotope. But like most other heavy nuclei abundant in nature and characterized by an exceptionally long lifetime, it is metastable with respect to alpha-decay. However, the decay usually evades observation because the nuclear structure of 209Bi gives rise to an extremely low decay probability and, moreover, generates low-energy alpha-particles difficult to detect. Indeed, dedicated experiments attempting to record the alpha-decay of 209Bi in nuclear emulsions failed. However, scintillating bolometers operated at temperatures below 100 mK offer improved detection efficiency and sensitivity, whereas a broad palette of targets could be available. Here we report the successful use of this method for the unambiguous detection of 209Bi alpha-decay in bismuth germanate detectors cooled to 20 mK. We measure an energy release of 3,137 +/- 1 (statistical) +/- 2 (systematic) keV and a half-life of (1.9 +/- 0.2) x 10(19) yr, which are in agreement with expected values.

Abstract

The ROSEBUD Collaboration has dedicated several underground runs to study different types of bolometers, mainly for the search of dark matter. Some of these runs, profiting from the good energy resolution of one bolometer of BGO and the ultra-low background of the underground laboratory of Canfranc (LSC), allowed the measurement of the L/K electron capture ratio of the 207Bi decay to the 1633 keV level of 207Pb. This paper constitutes the first published measurement of this magnitude.

Abstract

We present the analysis of the data obtained with a 53 g SrF2 scintillating bolometer operated at 20 mK. We have analyzed its heat and light response (time constants, linearity and energy resolution) and measured its scintillation relative efficiency factor for different particles (alpha, beta/gamma and neutrons). We have studied the spatial uniformity of the light output profiting from its internal contamination. The light amplitude of alphas from the delayed coincidence 224Ra→220Rn→216Po (emitted from the same crystal position) shows a positive correlation, evidence of a non-uniformity that worsens the light signal energy resolution by more than 50%.

International audience; Scintillating bolometers are particle detectors with a high particle discrimination power with many applications in nuclear and particle physics. This discrimination power is based on the different scintillation yield for different particles, and is strongly dependent on the target used. At the very low temperatures required for the operation of the bolometers, very few data about the scintillation yields are available. In this paper we present estimates of absolute light yields and energy partition among heat, light and trapping channels in Sapphire (AlO) and BGO (BiGeO) scintillating bolometers operated at 20 mK. The estimate relies on the observed negative correlation between the light and heat signals produced by γ-ray absorption in scintillating bolometers and on the study of the x-ray stimulated luminescence properties of BGO at temperatures down to 77 K.

Abstract

A 46 g BGO (Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 ) scintillating bolometer has been tested at 20 mK as a prototype for dark matter direct detection in the frame of the ROSEBUD (Rare Objects SEarch with Bolometers UndergrounD) collaboration. The bolometer has been operated first in Orsay and then in an ultra-low background environment at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory. We analyze its response both in heat and light, and its particle discrimination capability. Light yield under γ-ray excitation at several energies (from 88.0 to 1633.3 keV) and the relative light output for different particles (β/γ, α and neutrons) have been estimated. The analysis focuses on the discrimination of nuclear recoils, like those produced by hypothetical weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), against electron recoils, produced by β/γ radioactive background.

International audience; We discuss cryogenic scintillation of Al2O3. Room-temperature measurements with α particles are first carried out to study effect of Ti concentration on response. Measurements under X-rays between room temperature and 10 K confirm a doubling of light output. The integration of a scintillation-phonon detector into an ionization-phonon dark matter search is underway, and the quenching factor for neutrons has been verified.

Rare Objects SEarch with Bolometers UndergrounD) is an experiment which attempts to detect low mass Weak Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) through their elastic scattering off Al and O nuclei. It consists of three small sapphire bolometers (of a total mass of 100 g) with NTD-Ge sensors in a dilution refrigerator operating at 20 mK in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory. We report in this paper the results of several runs (of about 10 days each) with successively improved energy thresholds, and the progressive background reduction obtained by improvement of the radiopurity of the components and subsequent modifications in the experimental assembly, including the addition of old lead shields. Abstract

Neutrons are a relevant background in rare events physics. Detectors based on fast neutron-induced nuclear reactions are commonly used for fast neutron spectroscopy. In this subject, scintillating bolometers provide an excellent energy resolution and particle discrimination by the simultaneous measurement of the heat and emitted light. Our group has constructed several 6Li and 10B based massive scintillating bolometers (LiF, Li6Eu(BO3)3, Li6Gd(BO3)3), with energy resolutions ranging from 16 to 200 keV. First results of a 32 gr 6LiF scintillating bolometer enriched at 95% in 6Li operated at 20 mK are presented. The use of this material in a multi-target cryogenic dark matter experiment, like EURECA, would allow monitoring the incident neutron flux in the detector during the data-taking.

Abstract

The ROSEBUD collaboration measured the differential flux of fast neutrons inside a shielding of lead irradiated with a source of 252Cf using two scintillating bolometers of LiF and Al2O3 at 20 mK. We compare an unfolding method using a three parameter model for the fast component of the neutron flux with a multigroup method in which the energy interval of interest is divided into groups. Some issues regarding the neutron monitoring with LiF or Al2O3 in a cryogenic experiment searching for dark matter WIMPs are discussed.

Abstract

In the frame of the ROSEBUD (Rare Objects SEarch with Bolometers UndergrounD) collaboration, we have tested at surface level (Orsay) and underground (Canfranc) properties at low temperature of a BGO scintillating bolometer developed as a prototype for dark matter searches. The response of the detector to different particles, both in heat and light, using internal and external radioactive sources is reported. We have focused on its sensitivity as dark matter target and as γ–ray spectrometer to monitor external background. An algorithm implemented to analyze high energy events, which produce saturated pulses in low energy experiments (like dark matter searches), is also discussed.

Abstract

We present the design, performance, and tests of a new generation of cooled large-area (5 cm 2 ) optical composite bolometers with a pure germanium absorber, permitting a good efficiency from near-IR to x-rays. With a sensitivity often better than photomultipliers or semiconductor diodes, they allow fluorescence measurements of cold targets with no window, no infrared background, good optical couplings, and a flat response on a large spectral band. Performance obtained at 25 mK is very promising: noise equivalent power as low as 4×10 –17 W/Hz ½ in the continuous mode, energy threshold about 50 eV in the pulse detection mode, and time constant τ~3 ms. These detectors of low mass (0.25 g) have been successfully used for detecting the fluorescence emitted by much more massive bolometers, having, for example, a BGO (92 g) or a CaWO 4 (54 g) target. The simultaneous detection of heat and light in these double bolometers permits the identification of each event in the massive target (α decay, γ, or cosmic ray interaction, neutron recoil...). Thanks to the consecutive excellent subtraction of the radioactive and cosmic ray background, it is a powerful tool developed by several groups for fundamental research: study of very rare decays of atoms, measurement of internal very low radioactivity content in single crystals, direct detection of dark matter recoils in massive fluorescence targets, and detection of solar neutrino fluorescence events in liquid 4 He. Recently obtained results are reviewed: the first detection of the rare alpha decay of 209 Bi, and new scintillation data on Al 2 O 3 (sapphire), LiF, or TeO 2 at 20 mK. By cooling at 10 mK, sensitivity can yet be increased by more than one order of magnitude.

Abstract

We analyse the optimization of windows which must transmit in the visible and in the far-infrared. The mechanical strength and the far-infrared transmission of available materials (mylar, TPX, quartz, sapphire, silica, diamond, plexiglass) are reviewed. We describe a composite window which is vacuum-tight and can withstand differential pressures of 1 bar. This window has permitted successful observations on the K.A.O. airborne telescope with transmission higher than 70% in the 50–200μ range.

Abstract

High-resolution observations of the thermal emission spectrum of Venus have been recorded in the 10.5-micron region, and these have led to the detection of several lines from the nu(3) - nu(1) bands of C-13O2 and C-12O-16O-18, as well as from the weak nu(3)+nu(2) - nu(1)+nu(2) band of C-12O2. The results obtained characterize the cloud top levels of Venus' atmosphere, at about 66 km; the derived ratios should be able to represent global values on Venus. These determinations are in agreement with in situ Pioneer Venus and Venera atmospheric composition measurements. It is demonstrated that important isotopic ratios are obtainable with ground-based spectroscopy. 26 references.

Abstract

As part of a programme aiming at the development of small nuclear radiation detectors, for example thermal detectors and position sensitive mosaic structures of surface barrier type, a technique for micromachining the detector bodies in silicon has been developed. The technique is based on an anisotropic etching property of a solution, mainly consisting of KOH. The etch rate is strongly orientation dependent with a speed in the 〈100〉 direction about 400 times faster than in the 〈111〉 direction. The major steps in the etching procedure are described and some examples of deep etching in Si are shown.

Abstract

This paper describes the mounting of a high performance, far‐infrared, three‐part bolometer designed to permit its use directly in a helium bath. It can be matched with low loss to any optical system or to a waveguide. Optimal performance and constant characteristics have been obtained; D (at 4 K and 20 Hz) = 1.4×1012 W−1⋅cm⋅Hz(1/2) and more than 30 cooling cycles have been made without the seals leaking.

Abstract

A spectrometer based on low-temperature calorimetry is under development since 1983. The present detector, capable of recording individual alpha and beta particles and X-ray photons, is based on a composite diamond-germanium bolometer. The advantage of a composite bolometer is that it separates the absorption and detection functions. Diamond, as an absorber, is of particular advantage because of its low heat capacity and high thermal diffusivity. The goal is a theoretical energy resolution of a few eV at 0.1/sup 0/K. Our initial experiments at 1.3/sup 0/K and 0.9/sup 0/K, which give resolutions in the keV range, are still noise limited. High-resolution applications, such as in X-ray astronomy and nuclear physics - in particular neutrino mass measurements - are forseen.

Abstract

The detection of single events like the absorption of γ or X-rays and a or p particles with cooled thermal detectors is now well established and first resolutions obtained are promising. We have more thoroughly investigated the possibilities of the composite bolometer which offers the advantage of separating the absorbtion, thermal diffusion and thermometric functions. An optimal configuration is the diamond composite bolometer with a monolithic thermistor. Experimental results are presented on the simultaneous detection of different kinds of events (α's + γ -rays and β's + X-rays) at 1 K temperature. These results confirm the high linearity of this detector (better than 1.5 per cent from 20 KeV to 6 MeV) and its ability to accept rather high counting rates (> 100 per second). As a conclusion, we present an example of application to X-ray astronomy and we underline some problems or developments to be studied for a space mission.

Abstract

This paper describes a multiplex image coding system designed to be associated with a non-imaging spectrometer (Si(Li) or thermal spectrometer). The resulting instrument, an imaging spectrometer, could be used as a focal instrument for an astronomical grazing incidence telescope. The coding system consists in a movable mask with pseudo randomly distributed holes, located in the telescope focal plane. The pixel size lies in the range 100-200 microns. The close association of the coder with a Si(Li) spectrometer or with an X-ray bolometer gives an imaging spectrometer combining the good efficiency ( >50% between 0.1 and 10 keV) and energy resolution ( ΔE~100 eV for Si(Li),~ 10 eV (expected) for a bolometer) of these energy dispersive devices, with the spatial resolution of the mask.

Abstract

We present the ASSI (Active Stabilization in Stellar Interferometry) interferometric experiment presently under realisation for use with the 2-Telescope interferometer of CERGA (I2T). A detailed presentation of the instrument project was given in ref. 1 , and progress on the realization were indicated in ref. 2 . We review the principles and expected performances of our system and, in particular, the real time, flux optimized, fringe tracking system that we developped using synchronous detection technique on cooled silicium diodes in the near Infrared.

Abstract

The measurement of radioactivity by direct conversion of nuclear radiation into a temperature rise of a calorimeter is as old as nuclear physics itself. As part of a general programme aiming at a determination of the mass of the electron neutrino, we have designed an improved version of a He-cooled composite diamond bolometer with a monolithic germanium thermistor, developed at the Laboratoire de Physique Stellaire et Planetaire (LPSP)1. Our approach, based on an idea by De Rujula2, is to study the shape, near the upper end-point of the internal bremsstrahlung spectrum in electron-capture β decay. The best nucleus for a precise measurement seems to be 163Ho, for which we have determined3 the Q EC value to be 2.83±0.05 keV. A particularly interesting possibility is to use total absorption spectrometry4 (calorimetry), in which the radioactive holmium forms part of the sensitive volume of the detector. With 5–6-MeV α particles impinging on the diamond wafer of the bolometer, a full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 36 keV was obtained at a temperature of 1.3 K. The theoretical resolution at 100 mK is a few electron-volts, so this new detection technique should give greatly enhanced energy resolution compared with present solid-state conductors based on charge carrier collection.

Abstract

Massive bolometers were proposed recently to detect the dark matter of our galaxy, and supposed to be constituted by Weakly Interactive Massive particles (WIMPs). The Dark Matter problem as presented by astrophysicists is briefly developped, focusing on a plausible candidate offered by particle physicists: the neutralino. The experimental challenges to detect these particles are severe: a low energy threshold in a massive detector, in an environment well protected from radioactivity and cosmic rays. We believe that massive bolometers cooled at very low temperature are the most appropriated detectors for such an experiment. To support this belief, the features of the interactions of the different particles expected in the targets of bolometers are reviewed. The results annexed to the document attest that the first goal has been achieved in a 24g sapphire bolometer cooled at 60mK, which could measured energies at the keV level in the Modane underground lab (LSM; Fréjus tunnel). A reflexion is presented about the many calibration difficulties encountered in this kind of experiment, which some results confirm, while others may help to solve. Finally, applications of this new particle detector in various topics of experimental physics are suggested.; Les bolomètres massifs ont été proposés récemment pour tenter de détecter la matière noire de notre galaxie, si on la suppose constituée de particules lourdes ayant des interactions faibles (wimps). Le problème de la matière noire tel que le soulèvent les astrophysiciens est brièvement rappelé, et l'accent est mis sur un candidat plausible propose par les physiciens des particules: le neutralino. Les contraintes expérimentales pour la détection de ces particules sont sévères: un seuil en énergie bas dans un détecteur massif, et un environnement particulièrement bien protégé de la radioactivité et du rayonnement cosmique. Les bolomètres massifs refroidis à très basse température sont les détecteurs les plus appropriés pour une telle expérience. Pour le souligner, les particularités des interactions des différentes particules attendues dans la cible des bolomètres sont passées en revue. Les résultats rassembles en annexe attestent que le premier objectif a été atteint: un bolomètre en saphir de 24g refroidi à 60 mk a pu mesurer des énergies faibles de l'ordre du kev dans le tunnel de Fréjus. Une réflexion est menée sur les difficultés de calibration dans ce type d'expérience que certains résultats viennent confirmer, tandis que d'autres y apportent un premier élément de réponse. Enfin, des applications de ce nouveau détecteur de particules dans de nombreuses branches de la physique expérimentale sont proposées.
