Les recherches sur le vecteur de la maladie de Cap Saint Paul du cocotier au Ghana ont débuté à partir de 1990 (90-97; 2002-04) et n'ont pas donné de résultats probants. A partir de juillet 2005, de nouvelles normes d'essais ont été appliquées: ombrière, collectes et lâchers journaliers d'insectes aux heures les moins chaudes, cages et plants de cocotier de différentes tailles. On a introduit en cage 73000 M. adiopodoumeensis pendant 28 mois (520 adultes/plant/mois). Des contrôles en PCR sur les 5 cocotiers de cette cage Myndus et sur 935 adultes ont toujours été négatifs. Les essais de transmission avec M. adiopodoumeensis apparemment non vecteur de la maladie, ont été donc arrêtés. Le phytoplasme du CSPWD a été identifié par PCR dans un cocotier ayant reçu 4380 Diostrombus (4 espèces de Derbidae) 4 mois après le début des lâchers. Ce cocotier n'a jamais présenté de symptôme de maladie 28 mois plus tard et toutes les PCR successives ont été négatives. Les Auchenorrhynches collectés par fauchage sur les adventices dans et autour de la parcelle pendant le jour, ont été également testés sans succès. L'hypothèse d'une transmission par le sol est également prise en compte à cause de la présence de cochenilles et de nématodes.

Le Cape Saint Paul Wilt (CSPW), une maladie du cocotier de type Jaunissement mortel, est connu au Ghana depuis 1932. Des surveillances aériennes et/ou terrestres ont été entreprises pour évaluer l'état actuel de la dissémination de la maladie. Les enquêtes ont révélé que la propagation de la maladie, pendant les cinq dernières années, a surtout été l'extension des foyers existants. De nouveaux foyers ont cependant été identifiés à Glidzi dans la Région Volta, Bawjiase et Efutu Breman en Région Centrale. Après la réapparition de la maladie dans la Région Volta en 1995, le corridor Woe-Tegbi-Dzelukope est resté endémique, mais moins agressif. Des poches de cocoteraies saines subsistent tout le long des côtes et à l'intérieur des terres dans les zones connues de maladie. L'éradication de cocotiers malades à Ampain, foyer situé à 60 kilomètres environ de la frontière ivoirienne et la situation de la maladie dans les replantations d'hybrides NJM x GVT sont précisées.

La maladie du cocotier de Cap Saint Paul (CSPWD), signalée pour la première fois au Ghana en 1932, est une maladie du type jaunissement mortel. C'est la plus sérieuse menace pour le cocotier dans le pays. La stratégie de lutte recommandée dans le monde est la culture de variétés de cocotier résistantes à la maladie. Plus de 38 variétés ont été éprouvées depuis 1956 pour leur résistance au CSPWD et les résultats sont mentionnés dans cet article. Deux variétés, le Nain vert de Sri Lanka (NVS) et le Grand du Vanuatu (GVT), ont montré une grande résistance à la maladie, et les caractéristiques agronomiques de leur hybride SGD x VTT sont en cours d'évaluation. Un programme de replantation des zones dévastées par la maladie a débuté en 1999. Il est apparu que l'hybride MYD x VTT utilisé dans ce programme, a été infecté suite à une forte pression de la maladie. Experiment to transmit Cape Saint Paul wilt disease (CSPWD) of coconut commenced in 1992. Nzinga palmivora, Myndus adiopodoumeensis., and several species of derhidae were considered to be probable vectors of CSPWD of coconut palms. The mouth parts of these leafhopper and planthoppers are highly modified for piercing plant tissues and sucking sap for food. Surveys revealed these insects to be sufficiently widespread and widely distributed on coconut palms in Ghana to be likely vectors. These insects were tested as putative vectors of CSPWD on a variety of susceptible palms. A total of over 100,000 of each group were collected directly from palm foliage at several sites where the CSPWD was active and introduced into cages, which contained test paints. No transmissions were noted. However, three test palms, which received M. adiopodoumeensis introductions in one experiment, expressed characteristic symptoms of CSPWD for 4 months but remission of symptoms was later observed. Subsequent PCR analyses showed no phytoplasma, the pathogen of CSPWD in specimen samples. Possible reasons for the negative results obtained are discussed and future direction of the work is indicated.

The visit to the CSDP plantations revealed that Oryctes monoceros is a serious constraint for coconut replantings in Ghana. In coastal zones, numerous coconut palms killed by disease enable the insect to reproduce and develop, and with the recently planted young coconut palms, it finds highly favourable feeding conditions. Attacks vary, ranging from serious enough to kill young palms, to nonexistent. These different situations primarily depend on whether there are any dead coconut palms, but cases also exist where the insect is endemic in neighbouring forest regrowth.It is possible to reduce the incidence of attacks by taking a certain number of steps recommended in this report, which consist in creating an environment that does not favour pest development: - Land should always be chosen with no old stems inside the zone or in the vicinity and farmers will be encouraged to work together to simplify the elimination of stems and concentrate efforts on replanting in zones with fewer dead stems. Measures will be examined to deal with standing dead palms belonging to other farmers not involved in the project. In order that stems are not to be a potential source of pest development, systematic destruction of rotten sections must become a monthly upkeep practice for farmers, by making them aware of the need to destroy larvae regularly. - If intercrops are dense and well developed, they are a positive element in reducing the risk of pest attacks in the early months. Trials will be conducted to define crop management sequences taking the Oryctes problem into account. - In order to cope with attacks, the best control method for farmers is hand picking of adults using a harpoon. The number of insects extracted from young coconut palms should be recorded to obtain an attack intensity indicator. This information, and the reasons for replacing dead coconut palms should be included in the monthly report. - In the context of this Project, chemical control will only be used exceptionally due to its cost. Studies will be continuing with OPRI to enable maximum advantage to be taken of prospects for more effective trapping, targeting this population of insects which seek out coconut palms and cause damage. - In view of the Philippine Coconut Authority's experience of O. rhinoceros control in regions affected by Cadang Cadang, it would be very useful if OPRI could send one of its researchers on a mission to familiarize himself with the measures taken by PCA and assess their effectiveness in terms of biological pest control, particularly the use of entomopathogens, such as Metarhizium anisopliae. -The improvement of chemical control and further trials with attractants and repellents will require special plots devoted to this work. It would be advisable for CSDP and OPRI to discuss this point and to determine requirements and the availability of such plots.

Results of a study of population trends in two putative vectors of Cape St. Paul Wilt Disease of coconuts (#Myndus adiopodoumeensis# and #Nzinga palmivora#) are presented. There were three peaks of #M. adiopodoumeensis# abundance and only two peaks in #N. palmivora#. There were three peaks of disease initiation in all cases studied at approximately the same period that #M. adiopodoumeensis# was at peak abundance. Regression analysis revealed a substantial relationship (r = 0.6) between #M. adiopodoumeensis# abundance and Cape St. Paul Wilt Disease incidence.

In Ghana, coconut lethal yellowing phytoplasma locally called Cape Saint Paul Wilt Disease (CSPWD) is the most damaging coconut disease. Two different foci of the disease can be distinguished: the first one covering the coast of the Western and Central Regions, and the second covering the coast of the Volta region. To test the hypothesis of a genetic differentiation between the CSPWD phytoplasma from the two foci, the partial ribosomal operon 16S, and two ribosomal protein genes (rplV and rpsC) of 14 strains were sequenced. The ribosomal protein gene sequences allowed the differentiation of the strains originating from the two different foci by a unique SNP, confirming a genetic differentiation.

Le vecteur du phytoplasme responsable du jaunissement mortel du cocotier au Ghana est inconnu à ce jour. Il est cependant admis que les phytoplasmes sont transmis par des insectes piqueurs-suceurs, ces insectes étant supposés être les seuls à avoir la capacité d'injecter les phytoplasmes dans les tubes criblés du phloème. Bien que la présence de phytoplasmes dans un insecte ne prouve sa capacité à transmettre la maladie, nous avons testés une grande quantité d'insectes pour la présence de phytoplasmes par PCR (directPCR et NestedPCR), en utilisant des amorces spécifiques des phytoplasmes en général, et du phytoplasme responsable du jaunissement mortel du cocotier en particulier. En effet, la mise en évidence d'une ou plusieurs espèces d'insectes porteurs du phytoplasme pourrait orienter nos recherches pour les essais de transmission en cages par insectes spécifiques.

Phytoplasmas are associated to coconut lethal yellowing disease in several tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world and many coconut palms have been destroyed by this disease. A report of more than 15 years of search to detect insect vector(s) of coconut lethal yellowing disease (Cape Saint Paul wilt - CSPW) in Ghana is presented.
