Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most toxic mycotoxin and is widespread in moldy feed. The use of biological removal methods to reduce AFB1 has become a research hotspot. This study aimed to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) capable of removing AFB1 from moldy feeds and assessed the removal capacity under various environmental conditions. A strain named Lactobacillus brevis DN-1 was isolated from feed samples and showed 71.38% AFB1 percent removal. Furthermore, DN-1 showed good antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus BNCC336156 and Aspergillus parasiticus BNCC335939. The optimum growth temperature and pH of DN-1 were 37 °C and 6.0, respectively, and DN-1 grew well in the concentration range of 0–20 µg/L AFB1. Under a temperature of 20–40 °C, pH of 3.0–9.0, and anaerobic conditions, the percent removal of AFB1 was more than 60%. An analysis of the different components of DN-1 showed that cell wall adsorption was the main removal method and suggested the pathway for AFB1 removal by LAB. In addition, strain DN-1 was used as a biological preservative in artificially contaminated peanut and sunflower cakes, which significantly inhibited the growth of mold and production of AFB1. In brief, this study highlights the potential use of DN-1 as a preventive agent against aflatoxicosis via strong removal capability in the application of fermented feed or food. Ferulic acid (FA) is one of a common ingredients in Chinese herbal medicine. FA has the interesting property of promoting growth and improving meat quality in livestock, but the mechanism is not understood. This study evaluated both safety and mechanism of efficacy in zebrafish model. At 15 μg/mL or above, FA led to pericardial oedema and delayed growth in zebrafish embryos. Dietary FA promoted growth and feed assimilation in male adult zebrafish. Genes related to myogenic development (myod1, myog and myf5) were significantly upregulated by FA and muscle fibre width in skeletal muscle was increased. At 20 µg/g, FA significantly increased number of goblet cells in zebrafish intestinal tissue, and gut microbiota composition also changed. Based on 16s rRNA gene sequences, 20 μg/g FA decreased Firmicutes and increased Bacteroides. 20 μg/g FA also stimulated the expression of PPAR‐α, a gene associated with fat metabolism, and decreased the expression of PPAR‐β and PPAR‐γ. These gene expression changes were beneficial to fatty acid synthesis and metabolism and decreased fat deposition. This study aimed to assess the effects of different linolenic acid (LNA, 18:3n‐3) and linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n‐6) ratios in diet on growth performance, fatty acid composition in muscle and liver and non‐specific immunity in serum, liver and intestines of juvenile Manchurian trout (Brachymystax lenok). With casein, soybean meal and corn protein meal as main protein sources, a vegetable oil‐based (VO‐based) diet with iso‐nitrogen (40%) and iso‐lipid (18.5%) was prepared by adding different proportions of linseed oil, corn oil and palm oil. The LNA/LA ratio in the VO‐based diets was 0.02, 0.55, 1.06, 1.61 and 2.17 (constant composition of LNA and LA). The control group (CON) used fish oil (FO) as the sole lipid source. Healthy juvenile Manchurian trout (body weight: 7.00 ± 0.07 g) were fed in a recirculating aquaculture system for 9 weeks. The results showed that VO‐based diets did not affect the growth of Manchurian trout, but decreased DHA and EPA levels in the dorsal muscle of Manchurian trout. Levels of LA, arachidonic acid (ARA) and n‐6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of liver in VO‐based diets were significantly higher than those in CON diet and decreased with an increasing LNA/LA ratio in the diet. The composition of LNA, DHA, EPA and n‐3 PUFA of dorsal muscle and liver in VO‐based diets increased with increasing LNA/LA ratio. In the liver and proximal intestine (PI), lysozyme (LZM) activity increased with the increasing LNA/LA ratio in the VO‐based diet. However, it decreased in the mid‐intestine (MI) and distal intestine (DI). Acid phosphatase (ACP) activity in liver was significantly high when the LNA/LA ratio in the diet was 1.06 (p <.05). Alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity in the MI increased with the increasing dietary LNA/LA ratio. The LNA/LA ratio in the diet did not affect the growth of Manchurian trout juveniles, and a diet with an LNA/LA ratio between 0.55 and 1.06 was beneficial for non‐specific immunity in Manchurian trout. This study evaluated the effects of inoculation of whole crop corn silage with a mixture of heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB) composed of Lactobacillus hilgardii and Lactobacillus buchneri on ensiling, aerobic stability, ruminal fermentation, total tract nutrient digestibility, and growth performance of beef cattle. Uninoculated control corn silage (CON) and silage inoculated with 3.0 × 105 cfu g−1 of LAB containing 1.5 × 105 cfu g−1 of L. hilgardii CNCM I-4785 and 1.5 × 105 cfu g−1 of L. buchneri NCIMB 40788 (INOC) were ensiled in silo bags. The pH did not differ (P > 0.05) between the two silages during ensiling but was greater (P < 0.001) for CON than INOC after 14 d of aerobic exposure (AE). Neutral detergent insoluble crude protein (NDICP) content (% of DM and % of CP basis) of terminal INOC silage was greater (P ≤ 0.05) than that of CON. In terminal silage, concentrations of total VFA and acetate were greater (P < 0.001), while water-soluble carbohydrates were lower (P < 0.001) for INOC than CON. Yeast and mold counts were lower for INOC than CON (P ≤ 0.001) in both terminal and aerobically exposed silages. The stability of INOC was greater (P < 0.001) than that of CON after 14 d of AE. Ruminal fermentation parameters and DMI did not differ (P > 0.05) between heifers fed the two silages, while there was a tendency (P ≤ 0.07) for lower CP and starch digestibility for heifers fed INOC than CON. Total nitrogen (N) intake and N retention were lower (P ≤ 0.04) for heifers fed INOC than CON. Dry matter intake as a percentage of BW was lower (P < 0.04) and there was a tendency for improved feed efficieny (G:F; P = 0.07) in steers fed INOC vs. CON silage. The NEm and NEg contents were greater for INOC than CON diets. Results indicate that inoculation with a mixture of L. hilgardii and L. buchneri improved the aerobic stability of corn silage. Improvements in G:F of growing steers fed INOC silage even though the total tract digestibility of CP and starch tended to be lower for heifers fed INOC are likely because the difference in BW and growth requirements of these animals impacted the growth performance and nutrient utilization and a greater proportion of NDICP in INOC than CON. In order to study the effects of linseed oil substitution on the growth, body composition, tissue fatty acid composition, flesh nutritional value and immune indices of juvenile Manchurian trout, five feed types containing different levels of linseed oil (LO) mixed with fish oil (FO) were prepared: 0 (0 LO); 250 g/kg (25 LO); 500 g/kg (50 LO); 750 g/kg (75 LO); and 1000 g/kg (100 LO); and fed to juvenile Manchurian trout (initial weight 6.43 ± 0.02 g) for 9 weeks. The results showed that substitution of FO with 750 g/kg LO did not affect the growth of juvenile trout, with protein content in the dorsal muscle, and lipid content in the liver not showing any significant difference (p > 0.05). The highest lipid content found in muscle samples occurred for the 25 LO diet. The fatty acid composition found in the dorsal muscle and the liver of the Manchurian trout reflects the fatty acid composition in the diet, where the relative amount of linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in these organs has a positive linear correlation with their relative composition in the diet (p < 0.05). As the amount of LO in the diet was increased, the composition of ALA found in the sampled organs increased, while the composition of DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) decreased. At the same time, the index of atherogenicity (IA) and thrombogenicity (IT) of the muscle samples from the 75 LO and 100 LO diets was significantly lower than for the 0 LO and 25 LO diets (p < 0.05), while the flesh lipid quality (FLQ) in the 100 LO diet was significantly lower than for the other diets (p < 0.05). The aspartate transaminase (AST) activity decreased initially, and then increased, as the level of LO replacement for FO was increased, with the 25 LO diet being significantly lower than for other groups (p < 0.05). The alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity in serum samples from the 100 LO diet was higher than that from other diets. The lysozyme (LZM) activity in both serum and liver tissue first increased to a peak for the 25 LO and 50 LO diets, respectively, and then decreased as the level of LO was further increased. There was no significant change in the alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity in the liver samples; however, the acid phosphatase (ACP) activity decreased significantly from the highest value for 0 LO feed group. In conclusion, the composition of fatty acids in the dorsal muscle and the liver was found to be modified by the diets, and with the diet containing less than 750 g/kg LO, being both beneficial for growth, and improved immunity, while maintaining the nutritional value of the lipid content in the dorsal muscle during the 9‐week period. Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of corn straw-based unfermented and fermented total mixed rations (TMR) supplemented with exogenous cellulase on the in vitro fermentation characteristics, growth performance, feeding behavior, apparent digestibility, rumen fermentation and digestive enzyme activities of Chinese Simmental bulls., Methods: Unfermented (direct spraying of exogenous cellulase onto TMR, TMR) and fermented (exogenous cellulase fermentation for more than 7 d, fermented total mixed rations [FTMR]) TMR were collected, dried, powdered and used as fermentation substrates. The fermentation liquid was ruminal fluid collected from Chinese Simmental bulls. The artificial rumen culture fluid were continuously cultured in vitro for 48 h. Based on the diets they were fed, 24 healthy Chinese Simmental bulls (average weight of 495.93±10.89 kg) were randomly divided into two groups, with 12 bulls in each group, which were fed TMR or FTMR. The study lasted 56 d., Results: In in vitro experiments, the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) degradability and total volatile fatty acid, propionate, iso-butyrate, iso-valerate and valerate concentrations were greater in the FTMR group (p<0.05) than in the TMR group. However, the methane production, pH and acetate/propionate (A/P) of the FTMR group tended to be lower (p<0.05) than those of the TMR group. In the in vivo experiments, the average daily gain, eating rate, and feed efficiency of the FTMR groups were greater (p<0.05) than those of the TMR group. Similarly, the NDF degradability of the FTMR group was greater (p<0.05) than that of the TMR group. Compared to those in the TMR group, the concentrations of total volatile fatty acids, iso-butyrate, propionate and butyrate were greater in the FTMR group (p<0.05), and the A/P ratio was lower (p<0.05). Similarly, cellulase, xylanase, and β-glucosidase activities were greater (p<0.05) in the FTMR group than in the TMR group., Conclusion: Corn straw-based FTMR supplemented with exogenous cellulase play a vital role in decreasing the structural carbohydrate content of TMR and ruminal methane production in vitro, improving nutrient digestion and absorption, optimizing rumen fermentation, and improving the growth performance of beef cattle.

Freshwater snail is an important biological group in aquatic ecosystem and an intermediate host of many parasites. Intestinal flora plays an important role in animal energy metabolism and resistance to pathogens. We analyzed the intestinal microbiota diversity of Radix auricularia (RA) and Planorbella trivolvis (PL) by 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. At the phylum level, RA had 23 phyla, including Proteobacteria (33.63%), Cyanobacteria (15.33%), Chloroflexi (13.95%), and Actinomycetes (12.99%). PL had 13 phyla, including Proteobacteria (54.88%), Bacteroidetes (28.49%), and Actinomycetes (7.65%). At the genus level, there were 445 genera in RA, including Pleurocapsa, Thiodictyon, Leptotrichia, and Nocardioides. There were 238 genera in PL, including Cloacibacterium, OM60NOR5&#95;clade, Pseudomonas, and Rhodobacter. Ninety-three genera were the common core flora of the two snail species (all the samples were present), and 27 genera had an abundance greater than 0.5%. The structure of intestinal microbiota was significantly different between the two groups (P=0.027). We performed the functional prediction of intestinal microbiota using Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt), and the results show that the KEGG functional composition of the intestinal flora of the two snails was similar, and the abundance of the amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and membrane transport were large. In summary, the intestinal microbiota of the two snails was high in diversity and significantly different, but there were a large number of common core flora.
