Rice tillering is one of the most important agronomical traits largely determining grain yield. Photosynthesis and nitrogen availability are two important factors affecting rice tiller bud elongation; however, underlying mechanism and their cross-talk is poorly understood. Here, we used map-based cloning, transcriptome profiling, phenotypic analysis, and molecular genetics to understand the roles of the Decreased Tiller Number 1 (DTN1) gene that encodes the fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase and involves in photosynthesis required for light-induced axillary bud elongation in rice. Deficiency of DTN1 results in the reduced photosynthetic rate and decreased contents of sucrose and other sugars in both leaves and axillary buds, and the reduced tiller number in dtn1 mutant could be partially rescued by exogenous sucrose treatment. Furthermore, we found that the expression of nitrogen-mediated tiller growth response 5 (NGR5) was remarkably decreased in shoot base of dtn1-2, which can be activated by sucrose treatment. Overexpression of NGR5 in the dtn1-2 could partially rescue the reduced tiller number, and the tiller number of dtn1-2 was insensitive to nitrogen supply. Nanomaterial-mediated antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) emerges as a promising treatment against antibiotic-resistant bacterial biofilms. Specifically, titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) are being investigated as photosensitizers in aPDT to address biofilm related diseases. To enhance their photocatalytic performance in the visible spectral range for biomedical applications, various strategies have been adopted, including reduction of TiO 2 NPs. However, despite improvements in visible-light photoactivity, reduced TiO 2 NPs have yet to reach their expected performance primarily due to the instability of oxygen vacancies and their tendency to reoxidize easily. To address this, we present a two-step approach to fabricate highly visible-light active and stable TiO 2 NP photocatalysts, involving nitrogen doping followed by a magnesium-assisted reductive annealing process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the synthesized reduced nitrogen-doped TiO 2 NPs (H:Mg-N-TiO 2 NPs) reveals that the presence of nitrogen stabilizes oxygen vacancies and reduced Ti species, leading to increased production of reactive oxygen species under visible-light excitation. The improved aPDT efficiency translates to a 3-fold enhancement in the antibiofilm activity of nitrogen-doped compared to undoped reduced TiO 2 NPs against both Gram-positive ( Streptococcus mutans ) and Gram-negative ( Porphyromonas gingivalis , Fusobacterium nucleatum ) oral pathogens. These results underscore the potential of H:Mg-N-TiO 2 NPs in aPDT for combating bacterial biofilms effectively.

Main Conclusion: Mutation of OsSHR2 adversely impacted root and shoot growth and impaired plant response to N conditions, further reducing the yield per plant. Nitrogen (N) is a crucial factor that regulates the plant architecture. There is still a lack of research on it. In our study, it was observed that the knockout of the SHORTROOT 2 (OsSHR2) which was induced by N deficiency, can significantly affect the regulation of plant architecture response to N in rice. Under N deficiency, the mutation of OsSHR2 significantly reduced root growth, and impaired the sensitivity of the root meristem length to N deficiency. The mutants were found to have approximately a 15% reduction in plant height compared to wild type. But mutants showed a significant increase in tillering at post-heading stage, approximately 26% more than the wild type, particularly in high N conditions. In addition, due to reduced seed setting rate and 1000-grain weight, mutant yield was significantly decreased by approximately 33% under low N fertilizer supply. The mutation also changed the distribution of N between the vegetative and reproductive organs. Maize (Zea mays) production systems are heavily reliant on the provision of managed inputs such as fertilizers to maximize growth and yield. Hence, the effective use of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is crucial to minimize the associated financial and environmental costs, as well as maximize yield. However, how to effectively utilize N inputs for increased grain yields remains a substantial challenge for maize growers that requires a deeper understanding of the underlying physiological responses to N fertilizer application. We report a multiscale investigation of five field-grown maize hybrids under low or high N supplementation regimes that includes the quantification of phenolic and prenyl-lipid compounds, cellular ultrastructural features, and gene expression traits at three developmental stages of growth. Our results reveal that maize perceives the lack of supplemented N as a stress and, when provided with additional N, will prolong vegetative growth. However, the manifestation of the stress and responses to N supplementation are highly hybrid-specific. Eight genes were differentially expressed in leaves in response to N supplementation in all tested hybrids and at all developmental stages. These genes represent potential biomarkers of N status and include two isoforms of Thiamine Thiazole Synthase involved in vitamin B1 biosynthesis. Background: Several plants are facing drought stress due to climate change in recent years. In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of varying watering frequency on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Hosta 'Guacamole'. Moreover, we investigated the effect of high-nitrogen and -potassium fertilizers on alleviating the impacts of drought stress on the morphology, photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence, fast chlorophyll a fluorescence transient, JIP-test parameters, and enzymatic and non-enzymatic scavenging system for reactive oxygen species (ROS) in this species., Results: Leaf senescence, decreased chlorophyll contents, limited leaf area, and reduced photosynthetic characteristics and oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) activity were observed in Hosta 'Guacamole' under drought stress. However, high-nitrogen fertilizer (30-10-10) could efficiently alleviate and prevent the adverse effects of drought stress. High-nitrogen fertilizer significantly increased chlorophyll contents, which was higher by 106% than drought stress. Additionally, high-nitrogen fertilizer significantly improved net photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency, which were higher by 467% and 2900% than those under drought stress. It attributes that high-nitrogen fertilizer could reduce transpiration rate of leaf cells and stomatal opening size in drought stress. On the other hand, high-nitrogen fertilizer enhanced actual photochemical efficiency of PS II and photochemical quenching coefficient, and actual photochemical efficiency of PS II significantly higher by 177% than that under drought stress. Furthermore, high-nitrogen fertilizer significantly activated OEC and ascorbate peroxidase activities, and enhanced the performance of photosystem II and photosynthetic capacity compared with high-potassium fertilizers (15-10-30)., Conclusions: High-nitrogen fertilizer (30-10-10) could efficiently alleviate the adverse effects of drought stress in Hosta 'Guacamole' via enhancing OEC activity and photosynthetic performance and stimulating enzymatic ROS scavenging system., (© 2024. Despite that nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) play critical roles in the lifecycle of microalgae, how N and P further affect the distribution of bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the phycosphere is still poorly understood. In this study, the effects of N and P on the distribution of ARGs in the phycosphere of Auxenochlorella pyrenoidosa were investigated. Results showed that the growth and chlorophyll synthesis of microalgae were inhibited when N or P was limited, regardless of the N/P ratios, but the extracellular polymeric substances content and nitrate assimilation efficiency were enhanced in contrast. Metagenomic sequencing revealed that N or P limitation resulted in the recruitment of specific bacteria that highly contribute to the nitrate metabolism in the phycosphere. Besides, N or P limitation promoted the propagation of phycosphere ARGs, primarily through horizontal gene transfer mediated by mobile genetic elements. The enrichment of specific bacteria induced by changes in the algal physiology also contributed to the ARGs proliferation under nutrient limitation. Increased surface ozone (O 3 ) pollution seriously threatens crop production, and ethylenediurea (EDU) can alleviate crop yield reduction caused by O 3 . However, the reason for the decrease in grain nitrogen (N) accumulation caused by O 3 and whether EDU serves as N fertilizer remain unclear. An experiment was conducted to investigate the impacts of factorial combinations of O 3 enrichment (ambient air plus 60 ppb) and EDU (foliage spray with 450 ppm solutions) on N concentration, accumulation and remobilization in hybrid rice seedlings. Compared to ambient condition, elevated O 3 significantly inhibited the N accumulation in vegetative organs during anthesis and grain N accumulation during the maturity stage. Elevated O 3 significantly decreased the total N accumulation during anthesis and maturity stages, with a greater impact at the latter stage. The decrease in grain N accumulation caused by O 3 was attributed to a decrease in N remobilization of vegetative organs during the grain filling period as well as to a decrease in post-anthesis N uptake. However, there was no significant change in the proportion of N remobilization and N uptake in grain N accumulation. The inhibitory effect of O 3 on N remobilization in the upper canopy leaves was greater than that in the lower canopy leaves. In addition, elevated O 3 increased the N accumulation of panicles at the anthesis stage, mainly by resulting in earlier heading of rice. EDU only increased N accumulation at the maturity stage, which was mainly attributed to an increase in rice biomass by EDU. EDU had no significant effect on N concentration, N remobilization process, and N harvest index. This study explored the transformation of inorganic nitrogen, the expression levels of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and the regulatory mechanisms of key species on ARGs and inorganic nitrogen cycling genes (INCGs) under different levels of amoxicillin (AMX) stress. High level of AMX inhibited the accumulation of NH 4 + -N, which increased by 531 % relative to the initial. Moreover, AMX to some extent increased the levels of nirS and nirK, which could potentially result in nitrogen loss and the accumulation of NO 2 - . Actinobacteria might serve as potential hosts for ARGs during sludge composting. This stress induced a complex response between INCGs and ARGs more complex due to key species. Under high-level AMX pressure, most species associated with ARGs likely derived from nitrogen cycling functional species. Background: Ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) can lead to acute kidney injury and result in high disability and mortality rates. Cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE)-produced hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) has been confirmed to play a protective role in renal IRI. While autophagy is involved in renal IRI, its role in the regulation by endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) has not been considered. Our study explored the role of CSE/H 2 S in protecting against renal IRI by regulating ERS-induced autophagy., Methods: C57/BL6 mice were subjected to 30-min renal ischemia followed by .24-h reperfusion injury (IRI). The H 2 S donor sodium hydrosulfide hydrate (NaHS) or the CSE inhibitor D,L-propargylglycine (PAG) was injected intraperitoneally (i.p) into the mice. Serum creatinine and urea nitrogen levels were analyzed to evaluate renal function. Renal tubule epithelial cell damage was measured by HE and PAS staining. ERS and microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3) autophagy (LC3-I to LC3-II conversion) were analyzed by using western blotting., Results: In a C57/BL6 mouse model of acute renal IRI, the application of IRI impaired the renal function, which was accompanied by elevated serum creatinine (P < 0.001) and urea nitrogen levels (P < 0.001). While NaHS pretreatment dramatically attenuated renal IRI, PAG administration exacerbated renal IRI (P < 0.001). The effects of nitrogen application or earthworms on soil respiration in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain of China have received increasing attention. However, the response of soil carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission to nitrogen application and earthworm addition is still unclear. A field experiment with nitrogen application frequency and earthworm addition was conducted in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. Results showed nitrogen application frequency had a significant effect on soil respiration, but neither earthworms nor their interaction with nitrogen application frequency were significant. Low-frequency nitrogen application (NL) significantly increased soil respiration by 25%, while high-frequency nitrogen application (NH), earthworm addition (E), earthworm and high-frequency nitrogen application (E*NH), and earthworm and low-frequency nitrogen application (E*NL) also increased soil respiration by 21%, 21%, 12%, and 11%, respectively. The main reason for the rise in soil respiration was alterations in the bacterial richness and keystone taxa (Myxococcales). The NH resulted in higher soil nitrogen levels compared to NL, but NL had the highest bacterial richness. The abundance of Corynebacteriales and Gammaproteobacteria were positively connected with the CO 2 emissions, while Myxococcales, Thermoleophilia, and Verrucomicrobia were negatively correlated. This study investigated the quality of anaerobic (AnE) and oxic/anoxic (O/A) effluents from a continuous-feed structured-bed hybrid baffled reactor (SBHBR) treating dairy wastewater impacts on lettuce and cucumber germination. While sustainable technologies like SBHBR have successfully removed organic matter and total nitrogen from dairy wastewater, residual concentrations may still represent a risk to water resources. Therefore, phytotoxicity bioassays were conducted with lettuce and cucumber seeds in contact with effluent during early stages to evaluate the potential implications of dairy wastewater reuse in agriculture. The study also explored the potential of SBHBR technology in promoting water resource preservation and creating a sustainable energy and nutrient cycling system. The physicochemical parameters of both effluents were characterized, and the phytotoxicity was evaluated by measuring the germination index (GI), root length (RL), the number of germinated seeds (SG), and epicotyl elongation (EE) for both lettuce and cucumber. The study revealed that the O/A effluent demonstrated lower phytotoxicity than the AnE effluent. The mean results indicate that the O/A zone wastewater was more conducive to cucumber germination than the AnE zone. Moreover, a positive influence of organic matter in the effluent on root growth and epicotyl elongation in cucumber, as well as the presence of nitrogen on the germination index, in both plant species. These findings emphasize the importance of considering effluent characteristics for suitable irrigation, highlighting SBHBR's potential as an effective solution for treating and reusing dairy wastewater in agriculture. After cadmium (Cd) immobilization remediation in contaminated farmland soil, which forms of nitrogen fertilizer should be implemented to keep its sustainability? Urea and nitrate were used to compare for their effects on the remobilization of stabilized Cd in the rhizosphere soil of edible amaranth at nitrogen concentrations of 60, 95, and 130 mg kg -1 . The results showed that compared to nitrate nitrogen, the Cd content in shoots increased by 76.2%, 65.6%, and 148% after applying three different concentrations of urea, and the total remobilization amount of Cd also increased by 16.0%, 24.9%, and 14.0% respectively. Urea application promotes root secretion of citric acid, malic acid, pyruvate, and γ-aminobutyric acid, crucial in remobilizing stable Cd. The application of urea promoted the expression of genes involved in sucrose transport, glycolysis, the TCA cycle, amino acid secretion, citric acid efflux, and proton efflux. Arabidopsis heterologous expression and yeast one-hybrid assays identify critical roles of AmMATE42 and AmMATE43 in citric acid and fumaric acid efflux, with AmSTOP1 activating their transcription. Inhibition of SIZ1 expression in urea treatment reduce AmSTOP1 SUMOylation, leading to increased expression of AmMATE42 and AmMATE43 and enhanced organic acids efflux. The brain's unique characteristics make it exceptionally susceptible to oxidative stress, which arises from an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, reactive nitrogen species (RNS) production, and antioxidant defense mechanisms. This review explores the factors contributing to the brain's vascular tone's vulnerability in the presence of oxidative damage, which can be of clinical interest in critically ill patients or those presenting acute brain injuries. The brain's high metabolic rate and inefficient electron transport chain in mitochondria lead to significant ROS generation. Moreover, non-replicating neuronal cells and low repair capacity increase susceptibility to oxidative insult. ROS can influence cerebral vascular tone and permeability, potentially impacting cerebral autoregulation. Different ROS species, including superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, exhibit vasodilatory or vasoconstrictive effects on cerebral blood vessels. RNS, particularly NO and peroxynitrite, also exert vasoactive effects. This review further investigates the neuroprotective effects of antioxidants, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), vitamin C, vitamin E, and the glutathione redox system. Various studies suggest that these antioxidants could be used as adjunct therapies to protect the cerebral vascular tone under conditions of high oxidative stress. Nevertheless, more extensive research is required to comprehensively grasp the relationship between oxidative stress and cerebrovascular tone, and explore the potential benefits of antioxidants as adjunctive therapies in critical illnesses and acute brain injuries.

The grain yield is closely associated with spikelet fertility in rice (Oryza sativa L.) under high temperatures, and nitrogen (N) plays a crucial role in yield formation. To investigate the effect of panicle N application on yield formation under high temperatures at the panicle initiation stage, two rice varieties [Liangyoupeijiu (LYPJ, heat susceptible) and Shanyou63 (SY63, heat tolerant)] were grown and exposed to high daytime temperature (HT) and control temperature (Control) during the panicle initiation stage. Low (LPN) and high (HPN) panicle N applications were conducted. HT markedly decreased the yields by 87% at LPN and 48% at HPN in LYPJ and 31% at LPN and 36% at HPN in SY63. The decrease in grain yield under HT was primarily attributed to the decline in spikelet fertility, HPN increased spikelet fertility. HT resulted in the abnormal development of anthers, which included disordered, enlarged, and broken anther wall layers, degraded and irregularly shaped microspores, delayed tapetum degradation, less vacuolated microspores per locule, abnormal and aborted pollen grains; however, HPN improved the development of anthers under HT, particularly in LYPJ. A high rate of evapotranspiration resulted in an approximately 1°C decrease in panicle temperatures at HPN compared with that at LPN in both varieties under HT. Gas-loaded nanobubbles have potential as a method of oxygen delivery to increase tumour oxygenation and therapeutically alleviate tumour hypoxia. However, the mechanism(s) whereby oxygen-loaded nanobubbles increase tumour oxygenation are unknown; with their calculated oxygen-carrying capacity being insufficient to explain this effect. Intra-tumoural hypoxia is a prime therapeutic target, at least partly due to hypoxia-dependent stimulation of the formation and function of bone-resorbing osteoclasts which establish metastatic cells in bone. This study aims to investigate potential mechanism(s) of oxygen delivery and in particular the possible use of oxygen-loaded nanobubbles in preventing bone metastasis via effects on osteoclasts. Lecithin-based nanobubbles preferentially interacted with phagocytic cells (monocytes, osteoclasts) via a combination of lipid transfer, clathrin-dependent endocytosis and phagocytosis. This interaction caused general suppression of osteoclast differentiation via inhibition of cell fusion. Additionally, repeat exposure to oxygen-loaded nanobubbles inhibited osteoclast formation to a greater extent than nitrogen-loaded nanobubbles. This gas-dependent effect was driven by differential effects on the fusion of mononuclear precursor cells to form pre-osteoclasts, partly due to elevated potentiation of RANKL-induced ROS by nitrogen-loaded nanobubbles. Because its impact in plant development and growth and its interaction with Na + and Cl - , the supply of different N-forms to crops can be an easy-to-use tool with effective results on salinity tolerance. Here the effect of four N-NO 3 - /N-NH 4 + ratios (mM; 2/0, 1.6/0.4, 0.4/1.6, 0/2) on adaptation to salt conditions (15 mM NaCl in a first experiment and 40 mM NaCl in a second experiment) was studied in young lettuce (cv "Summer wonder") plants. The experiments were carried out in greenhouse and under hydroponics conditions. The results show that this cultivar tolerates and adapts to moderate salinity by deploying several structural and physiological mechanisms; (i) increasing allocation of biomass to the root, (ii) increasing root Na + uptake and storing it in the shoot and root tissues, (iii) increasing intrinsic water use efficiency and (iv) increasing root N and P uptake. The beneficial effect of salt exposure on growth was greater when the predominant N-form was N-NO 3 - . These plants with higher tissue N-NO 3 - concentration, decreased Cl - uptake and shoot and root Cl - concentration. Both bottom-up and top-down processes modulate plant communities. Fungal and oomycete pathogens are most common in global grasslands, and due to differences in their physiology, function, host range, and life cycles, they may differentially affect plants (in both intensity and direction). However, how fungal and oomycete pathogens regulate bottom-up and top-down effects on plant community biomass remains unclear. To this end, we conducted a 3-year field experiment in an alpine meadow incorporating mammalian herbivore exclosure, fungicide/oomyceticide application, and nitrogen addition treatments. We arranged 12 blocks with half randomly assigned to be mammalian herbivore exclosures (fenced to exclude grazing sheep), and the other half were fenced most of the year but not in winter (winter grazing control). Six 2.5 × 2.5 m square plots were established in each block, with each of the six plots assigned as control, nitrogen addition, fungicide application, oomyceticide application, nitrogen addition + fungicide application, and nitrogen addition + oomyceticide application. We found that fungicide application significantly increased plant community biomass (mainly Poaceae species) under nitrogen addition and promoted the bottom-up effect of nitrogen addition on plant community biomass by altering the community-weighted mean of plant height (via species turnover). Meanwhile, oomyceticide application significantly increased plant community biomass (mainly Poaceae species) when mammalian herbivores were excluded and weakened the top-down effect of winter grazing on plant community biomass by driving intraspecific variation in plant height. Our results highlight that fungal and oomycete pathogens play important (but differing) roles in mediating the effects of nutrient availability and higher trophic levels on plant community biomass. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that plant pathogen-related modulation of plant community biomass is achieved by alterations to plant height. Nitrogen fertilizer can affect the seed quality of mung bean. However, the effects of nitrogen fertilizer on the properties of mung bean protein (MBP) remain unclear. We investigated the effects of four nitrogen fertilization levels on the physicochemical, structural, functional, thermal, and rheological properties of MBP. The results showed that the amino acid and protein contents of mung bean flour were maximized under 90 kg ha -1 of applied nitrogen treatment. Nitrogen fertilization can alter the secondary and tertiary structure of MBP. The main manifestations are an increase in the proportion of β-sheet, the exposure of more chromophores and hydrophobic groups, and the formation of loose porous aggregates. These changes improved the solubility, oil absorption capacity, emulsion activity, and foaming stability of MBP. Meanwhile, Thermodynamic and rheological analyses showed that the thermal stability, apparent viscosity, and gel elasticity of MBP were all increased under nitrogen fertilizer treatment. Correlation analysis showed that protein properties are closely related to changes in structure. In conclusion, nitrogen fertilization can improve the protein properties of MBP by modulating the structure of protein molecules. Plant enrichment and tolerance to heavy metals are crucial for the phytoremediation of coal gangue mountain. However, understanding of how plants mobilize and tolerate heavy metals in coal gangue is limited. This study conducted potted experiments using Setaria viridis as a pioneer remediation plant to evaluate its tolerance to coal gangue, its mobilization and enrichment of metals, and its impact on the soil environment. Results showed that the addition of 40% gangue enhanced plant metal and oxidative stress resistance, thereby promoting plant growth. However, over 80% of the gangue inhibited the chlorophyll content, photoelectron conduction rate, and biomass of S. viridis, leading to cellular peroxidative stress. An analysis of metal resistance showed that endogenous S in coal gangue promoted the accumulation of glutathione, plant metal chelators, and non-protein thiols, thereby enhancing its resistance to metal stress. Setaria viridis cultivation affected soil properties by decreasing nitrogen, phosphorus, conductivity, and urease and increasing sucrase and acid phosphatase in the rhizosphere soil. In addition, S. viridis planting increased V, Cr, Ni, As, and Zn in the exchangeable and carbonate-bound states within the gangue, effectively enriching Cd, Cr, Fe, S, U, Cu, and V. The increased mobility of Cd and Pb was correlated with a higher abundance of Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria. Heavy metals, such as As, Fe, V, Mn, Ni, and Cu, along with environmental factors, including total nitrogen, total phosphorus, urease, and acid phosphatase, were the primary regulatory factors for Sphingomonas, Gemmatimonas, and Bryobacter. In summary, S. viridis adapted to gangue stress by modulating antioxidant and elemental enrichment systems and regulating the release and uptake of heavy metals through enhanced bacterial abundance and the recruitment of gangue-tolerant bacteria. Improving nitrogen use efficiency of chemical fertilizers is essential to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of nitrogen. Nitrification, the conversion of ammonium to nitrate via nitrite by soil microbes, is a prominent source of nitrogen loss in soil systems. The effectiveness of nitrification inhibitors in reducing nitrogen loss through inhibition of nitrification is well-documented, however, their efficacy in heavy metals-contaminated soils needs thorough investigations. The current study assessed the efficacy of nitrification inhibitor 3, 4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) in reducing nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions in cadmium (Cd) contaminated paddy and red soils under lab-controlled environment. Obtained results indicated the substantial reduction in N 2 O emissions with DMPP in paddy and red soil by 48 and 35 %, respectively. However, Cd contamination resulted in reduced efficacy of DMPP, thus decreased the N 2 O emissions by 36 and 25 % in paddy and red soil, respectively. It was found that addition of DMPP had a significant effect on the abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA). Notably, the reduction in N 2 O emissions by DMPP varied with the abundance of AOB. Moreover, Cd pollution resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) reduction in the abundance of archaeal and bacterial amoA genes, as well as bacterial nirK, nirS, and nosZ genes. The combined treatment of Cd and DMPP had a detrimental impact on denitrifiers, thereby influencing the overall efficiency of DMPP. The fertilizing effects of biodigestate produced from biogas plants on crop and soil productivity are very scarce. Hence, a field study was conducted in 2022 at the Teaching and Research Farm of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, Nigeria. The study evaluated the effects of biodigestate fertilizer, applied alone or in combination with urea, single superphosphate, or muriate of potash fertilizers at low (N 1 , K 1 , and P 1 ) and high (N 2 , P 2 , and K 2 ) rates on soil chemical properties, growth, and yield of maize ( Zea mays (L.)). The treatments were biodigestate alone (D), D + N fertilizer (urea) at 60 kg·ha -1 (DN 1 ), D + N at 120 kg·ha -1 (DN 2 ), D + P fertilizer (single superphosphate) at 30 kg·ha -1 (DP 1 ), D + P at 60 kg·ha -1 (DP 2 ), D + K fertilizer (muriate of potash) at 30 kg·ha -1 (DK 1 ), D + K 60 kg·ha -1 (DK 2 ), D + N 1  + P 1  + K 1 (DN 1 P 1 K 1 ), D + N 2  + P 2  + K 2 (DN 2 P 2 K 2 ) (10), and control. The 10 treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design and replicated three times. Results showed that both low and high rates of fertilizer application improved soil chemical properties, growth parameters, and yield of maize compared with the control. High fertilizer rates (N 2 , P 2 , and K 2 ) significantly enhanced soil chemical properties and growth parameters, but lower rates (N 1 , P 1 , and K 1 ) resulted in higher maize yield. DN 1 fertilizer significantly increased maize yield compared with DN 2 , DP 1 , DP 2 , DK 1 , and DK 2 . Overall, the treatment of DN 1 P 1 K 1 demonstrated the highest grain yield, likely due to optimal nutrient supply from N, P, and K fertilizers, along with an improved soil environment facilitated by the biodigestate. The study recommends a balanced and sustainable fertilizer application strategy of 60 kg·N·ha -1 , 30 kg·P 2 O 5 ·ha -1 , and 30 kg·K·ha -1 with 2500 L·ha -1 of biodigestate to enhance maize production while minimizing cost and environmental impact. The effect of hydrodynamic mixing on controlling Microcystis blooms or changing the algal community to diatom dominance has been widely studied; however, the effects of colonial Microcystis biomass on the development of the algal community are poorly known. Here, in order to study the changes in Microcystis blooms under continuous aeration mixing, an experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with factors of varying biomass of Microcystis and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment in summer. There were three chlorophyll a (Chl-a) levels in six treatments: low Chl-a level of 68.4 μg L -1 (treatments L, L-E), medium Chl-a level of 468.7 μg L -1 (treatments M, M-E), and high Chl-a level of 924.1 μg L -1 (treatments H, H-E). Treatments L-E, M-E and H-E were enriched with the same inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. During the experiment of 30 days, the concentration of Microcystis and Chl-a decreased, and diatom Nitzschia palea cells appeared in all the treatments, which became dominant in treatments M, M-E, H and H-E, with the highest biomass of 9.41 ± 1.96 mg L -1 Nitzschia in treatment H-E on day 30. The rank order of the biomass of Nitzschia from low to high was (L = L-E) < (M = M-E) < H < H-E (P < 0.05). In addition, Nitzschia cells were aggregates attached to Microcystis colonies in all the treatments. The results showed that the initial biomass of colonial Microcystis affected the algal shift from Microcystis dominance to Nitzschia dominance. However, the enriched inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus was beneficial for the Nitzschia increase in the high biomass treatment alone. The shift from Microcystis dominance to diatom dominance under continuous aeration mixing may be caused by low light conditions as well as the nutrients released from Microcystis decay. Moreover, the aerobic condition caused by aeration mixing maintained the colonial mucilaginous sheath to support the growth of Nitzschia cells in aggregation. This study found for the first time that Microcystis blooms could shift to diatom Nitzschia dominance in aggregates. It provided a method to control and manipulate Microcystis blooms to diatom dominance through continuous aeration mixing to proper biomass of Microcystis colonies. Bulk carbon-based materials can enhance anaerobic biodenitrification when they are present in extracellular matrices. However, little information is available on the effect of nitrogen and iron co-doped carbon dots (N, Fe-CDs) with sizes below 10 nm on this process. This work demonstrated that Fe-N X formed in N, Fe-CDs and their low surface potentials facilitated electron transfer. N, Fe-CDs exhibited good biocompatibility and were effectively absorbed by Pseudomonas stutzeri ATCC 17588. Intracellular N, Fe-CDs played a dominant role in enhancing anaerobic denitrification. During this process, the nitrate removal rate was significantly increased by 40.60% at 11 h with little nitrite and N 2 O accumulation, which was attributed to the enhanced activities of the electron transport system and various denitrifying reductases. Based on proteomics and metabolomic analysis, N, Fe-CDs effectively regulated carbon/nitrogen/sulfur metabolism to induce more electron generation, less nitrite/N 2 O accumulation, and higher levels of nitrogen removal. This work reveals the mechanism by which N, Fe-CDs enhance anaerobic denitrification and broaden their potential application in nitrogen removal.

While the effect of CO2 enrichment on wheat (Triticum spp.) photosynthesis, nitrogen content or yield has been well-studied, the impact of elevated CO2 on metabolic pathways in organs other than leaves is poorly documented. In particular, glumes and awns, which may refix CO2 respired by developing grains and be naturally exposed to higher-than-ambient CO2 mole fraction, could show specific responses to elevated CO2 . Here, we took advantage of a free-air CO2 enrichment experiment and performed multilevel analyses, including metabolomics, ionomics, proteomics, major hormones and isotopes in Triticum durum . While in leaves, elevated CO2 tended to accelerate amino acid metabolism with many significantly affected metabolites, the effect on glumes and awns metabolites was modest. There was a lower content in compounds of the polyamine pathway (along with uracile and allantoin) under elevated CO2 , suggesting a change in secondary N metabolism. Also, cytokinin metabolism appeared to be significantly affected under elevated CO2 . Despite this, elevated CO2 did not affect the final composition of awn and glume organic matter, with the same content in carbon, nitrogen and other elements. We conclude that elevated CO2 mostly impacts on leaf metabolism but has little effect in awns and glumes, including their composition at maturity.

Microalgal lipids are precursors to the production of biodiesel, as well as a source of valuable dietary components in the biotechnological industries. So, this study aimed to assess the effects of nutritional (nitrogen, and phosphorus) starvations and salinity stress (NaCl) on the biomass, lipid content, fatty acids profile, and predicted biodiesel properties of green microalga Monoraphidium braunii. The results showed that biomass, biomass productivity, and photosynthetic pigment contents (Chl. a, b, and carotenoids) of M. braunii were markedly decreased by nitrogen and phosphorus depletion and recorded the maximum values in cultures treated with full of N and P concentrations (control, 100%). These parameters were considerably increased at the low salinity level (up to 150 mM NaCl), while an increasing salinity level (up to 250 mM NaCl) reduces the biomass, its productivity, and pigment contents. Nutritional limitations and salt stress (NaCl) resulted in significantly enhanced accumulation of lipid and productivity of M. braunii, which represented more than twofold of the control. Furthermore, these conditions have enhanced the profile of fatty acid and biodiesel quality-related parameters. Nitrogen forms can affect metal accumulation in plants and tolerance to metals, but a few published studies on the effects on Cu toxicity and Cu accumulation in plants are scarce. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the responses of Liriodendron chinense to different nitrogen forms, by the oxidative stress, antioxidant enzymes system, GSH-AsA cycle, Cu uptake, translocation, and accumulation under Cu stress. We found that Cu-induced growth inhibiting was alleviated by added exclusive NO 3 - -N. Adding N as NH 4 + -N with or without NO 3 - -N was aggravated as evidenced by significantly elevated malonaldehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) compared to N-Null. Cu exposure and adding NH 4 + -N inhibited superoxide dismutase activity, but remarkably stimulated the activities of catalase and peroxidase, the efficiency of glutathione-ascorbate (GSH-AsA) cycle, and the activity of glutathione reductase and nitrate reductase, with respect to the control. However, adding exclusive NO 3 - -N progressively restored the alteration of antioxidant to prevent Cu-induced oxidative stress. Additionally, adding exclusive NO 3 - -N significantly promoted the Cu uptake and accumulation in roots, but reduced Cu concentration in leaves, accompanied by the inhibited Cu translocation factor from roots to shoots by 36.7%, when compared with N-Null. The natural rubber industry consumes large volumes of water and annually releases wastewater with rich organic and inorganic loads. This wastewater is allowed for soil irrigation in developing countries. However, the pollutant composition in wastewater and its environmental effects remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to assess the wastewater's physicochemical parameters, toxic organic pollutants, heavy metals, and phytotoxic and cytogenotoxic. The result revealed that values of comprehensive wastewater parameters were recorded as chemical oxygen demand (187432.1 mg/L), pH (4.23), total nitrogen (1157.1 mg/L), ammonia nitrogen (1113.0 mg/L), total phosphorus (1181.2 mg/L), Zn (593.3 mg/L), Cr (0.6127 mg/L), and Ni (0.2986 mg/L). The organic compounds detected by LC-MS were salbostatin, sirolimus, Gibberellin A34-catabolite, 1-(sn-glycero-3-phospho)-1D-myo-inositol, and methyldiphenylsilane. The toxicity of the identified toxic chemicals and heavy metals was confirmed by onion and mung bean phytotoxicity characterization tests. The wastewater affected the germination of mung bean seeds, reduced or inhibited the growth of onions, and induced various chromosomal aberrations in root apical meristems. Nitrate pollution in fresh water is becoming increasingly serious. In this study, the effects of temperature and graphene oxide materials on the potential functions of denitrification communities in lake sediments were investigated by metagenome. The addition of graphene oxide significantly affected the abundance of denitrification genes such as Nap, Nos, and enhanced the contribution of Pseudomonas, making low temperature and material addition conducive to the denitrification process. Module network implied that low temperature increased the centrality of denitrification in community functions. At low temperatures, graphene oxide enhanced community anabolism by stimulation organic carbon consumption and regulating the gene abundance in the citric acid cycle and the semi-phosphorylation Entner-Doudoroff, thus possibly stimulating extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) synthesis and secretion. Ammonium and polyamines are essential nitrogen metabolites in all living organisms. Crosstalk between ammonium and polyamines through their metabolic pathways has been demonstrated in plants and animals, while no research has been directed to explore this relationship in algae or to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms. Previous research demonstrated that high concentrations of ammonium and putrescine were among the active substances in bacteria-derived algicide targeting dinoflagellates, suggesting that the biochemical inter-connection and/or interaction of these nitrogen compounds play an essential role in controlling these ecologically important algal species. In this research, putrescine, ammonium, or a combination of putrescine and ammonium was added to cultures of three dinoflagellate species to explore their effects. The results demonstrated the dose-dependent and species-specific synergistic effects of putrescine and ammonium on these species. To further explore the molecular mechanisms behind the synergistic effects, transcriptome analysis was conducted on dinoflagellate Karlodinium veneficum treated with putrescine or ammonium vs. a combination of putrescine and ammonium. The results suggested that the synergistic effects of putrescine and ammonium disrupted polyamine homeostasis and reduced ammonium tolerance, which may have contributed to the cell death of K. veneficum . There was also transcriptomic evidence of damage to chloroplasts and impaired photosynthesis of K. veneficum . This research illustrates the molecular mechanisms underlying the synergistic effects of the major nitrogen metabolites, ammonium and putrescine, in dinoflagellates and provides direction for future studies on polyamine biology in algal species.

Nitrogen (N) addition is a simple and effective field management approach to enhancing plant productivity. Nonetheless, the regulatory mechanisms governing nitrogen concentrations and their effect on soil enzyme activity, nutrient levels, and seed yield in the Festuca kirilowii seed field have yet to be elucidated. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the effect of N fertilizer application on soil enzyme activities, soil nutrients, and seed yield of F. kirilowii Steud cv. Huanhu, the only domesticated variety in the Festuca genus of the Poaceae family, was investigated based on two-year field experiments in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Results showed that N input significantly affected soil nutrients (potential of hydrogen, total nitrogen, organic matter, and total phosphorus). In addition, soil enzyme activities (urease, catalase, sucrase, and nitrate reductase) significantly increased in response to varying N concentrations, inducing changes in soil nutrient contents. Introducing N improved both seed yield and yield components (number of tillers and number of fertile tillers). These findings suggest that the introduction of different concentrations of N fertilizers can stimulate soil enzyme activity, thus hastening nutrient conversion and increasing seed yield. The exhaustive evaluation of the membership function showed that the optimal N fertilizer treatment was N4 (75 kg·hm -2 ) for both 2022 and 2023. The interaction between nitrogen storage and translocation, senescence, and late phase photosynthesis is critical to the post-anthesis grain fill period in wheat, but ozone's effect on nitrogen dynamics within the wheat plant is not well understood. This study used solardomes to expose a widely grown elite spring wheat cultivar, cv. Skyfall, to four levels of ozone (30 ppb, 45 ppb, 70 ppb, 85 ppb) for 11 weeks, with two levels of nitrogen fertilization, 140 kg ha -1 and 160 kg ha -1 , the higher rate including an additional 20 kg N ha -1 at anthesis. Chronic ozone exposure triggered earlier senescence in the 4th, 3rd and 2nd leaves but not the flag leaf, with a similar pattern of reduced chlorophyll content in the lower, older leaf cohorts, which started before senescence became visible. At anthesis there was no evidence of any effect of ozone on nitrogen storage in upper plant parts. However, high ozone increased levels of residual nitrogen found within plant parts at harvest, with concomitant reductions in C:N ratios and Nitrogen Remobilization Efficiency. Extra nitrogen fertilization applied at anthesis appeared to ameliorate the effect of ozone on nitrogen content and nitrogen translocation. The application of 15 N ammonium nitrate at anthesis confirmed that the majority of post-anthesis nitrogen uptake had been translocated to the ear/grain by harvest, with no effect of ozone on the translocation of nitrogen around the plant. This study aimed to investigate the morphological, functional and molecular changes in frozen-thawed ram sperm using an extender containing different concentrations of hydrated carbon 60 fullerene (C 60 HyFn), a nanotechnological product. Semen taken from each of the seven Akkaraman rams were pooled. Semen collection was done twice a week and it continued for 3 weeks. Each pooled semen sample was divided into six equal groups and diluted with tris + egg yolk extender including 0 (control), 200, 400, 800 nM, 1 and 5 μM concentrations of C 60 HyFn at 37°C. They were then frozen in liquid nitrogen vapour at -140°C, stored in liquid nitrogen container (-196°C) and thawed at 37°C for 25 s before analysis. In comparison with control, C 60 HyFn addition prior to freezing procedure provided significant increases in total and progressive motility rates, glutathione peroxidase, catalase activities and percentage of highly active mitochondria, and significant decreases in dead and abnormal sperm rates, lipid peroxidation, caspase-3 and DNA fragmentation levels in frozen-thawed ram semen. When compared to control, C 60 HyFn supplementation significantly down-regulated the expression levels of miR-200a and KCNJ11, and significantly up-regulated the expression levels of miR-3958-3p (at the concentrations of 200, 400, 800 nM and 1 μM), CatSper1 (at the concentrations of 200, 400 nM and 5 μM), CatSper2 (at the concentrations of 1 and 5 μM), CatSper3 (at the concentrations of 200, 400 nM, 1 and 5 μM), CatSper4 (at all concentrations), ANO1 (at the concentrations of 800 nM, 1 and 5 μM) and TRPV5 (at the concentrations of 200, 400 and 800 nM). The addition of C 60 HyFn had no effect on global DNA methylation rates. While ameliorating effects of melatonin (MT) on abiotic stress tolerance in plants are widely reported, the mechanism that underlies this process remains elusive. This work investigated mechanisms by which MT improved drought tolerance in pepper (Capsicum annuum ) plants. A foliar spray of 0.1mM MT treatment was applied to plants grown at 80% and 40% of full field capacity for 3days. Drought stress caused a significant decrease in plant dry weight, relative water content, leaf water potential, PSII efficiency (F v /F m ratio), chlorophyll, soluble protein, leaf and root nitrogen content. Drought increased hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde (MDA), nitrate, ammonium, free amino acids, soluble sugars, proline and glycine betaine. Drought also increased peroxidase (POD), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) activities, electrolyte leakage (EL) and methylglyoxal (MG). MT pre-treatment reduced oxidative stress and improved nitrogen metabolism by activating various enzymes such as nitrate reductase (NR), nitrite reductase (NiR), glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthetase (GOGAT) and glutamine dehydrogenase (GDH) activities. It also activated enzymes related to the glyoxalase system (Gly I and Gly II) and decreased NO3 - , NH4 + and free amino acid content. Our study suggests a cost-effective and sustainable solution to improve crop productivity in water-limited conditions, by enhancing plant growth, photosynthesis and nitrogen content.

Nitrate ammonification is important for soil nitrogen retention. However, the ecology of ammonifiers and their prevalence compared with denitrifiers, being competitors for nitrate, are overlooked. Here, we screen 1 million genomes for nrfA and onr, encoding ammonifier nitrite reductases. About 40% of ammonifier assemblies carry at least one denitrification gene and show higher potential for nitrous oxide production than consumption. We then use a phylogeny-based approach to recruit gene fragments of nrfA, onr and denitrification nitrite reductase genes (nirK, nirS) in 1861 global terrestrial metagenomes. nrfA outnumbers the nearly negligible onr counts in all biomes, but denitrification genes dominate, except in tundra. Random forest modelling teases apart the influence of the soil C/N on nrfA-ammonifier vs denitrifier abundance, showing an effect of nitrate rather than carbon content. Since 2002, a long-term field experiment has been conducted to determine the effects of different organic fertilization treatments on the bacterial community characteristics and maize productivity in dryland red soil using high-throughput sequencing technology. The experiment consisted of four treatments:no manure, M0; low manure, M1; high manure, M2; and high manure with lime addition, M3. Our results showed that the different organic fertilization treatments(M1, M2, and M3) significantly promoted maize productivity with the highest values of pH, soil organic matter(SOM), total nitrogen(TN), and total phosphorus(TP) compared to that under the M0 treatment, and the high manure with lime addition(M3) treatment had the highest level of maize production. The different organic fertilization treatments significantly increased the Shannon index, Evenness index, Chao1 index, and ACE index and significantly shaped the composition of the bacterial community. TP and pH were the main variables determining soil bacterial diversity index based on random forest modeling analysis, whereas pH, SOM, TP, and TN were the main variables determining the structure of the soil bacterial community. Correlation analysis and structural equation modeling determined that TP and SOM indirectly affected maize productivity by varying the bacterial diversity and community structure. The results of this study provide the scientific basis for ensuring food security and sustainable agricultural development by improving the fertility and bacterial diversity in dryland red soil.

1. A study was conducted to assess the impact of supplementing-graded concentrations of emulsifier on the production performance, gut microbial count, and digestibility of nitrogen and energy in broiler chicken fed diets without AGP.2. Male broiler chicks ( n  = 1500; Vencobb-430), aged one-day-old, were randomly allocated into six dietary groups each with 10 replicates of 25 birds each. A maize-soybean and meat and bone meal-based basal diet without antibiotic (AGP) growth promoter served as negative control (NC). The basal diet was supplemented with BMD (AGP, bacitracin methylene disalicylate-BMD 100 g/T), which served as the positive control (PC). Emulsifier was added to the NC diets at either 250 g/ton in all phases (250-All), 250 g in starter and grower phases, and 500 g in the finisher phase (250:250:500), 250 g in starter and 500 g in both grower and finisher phases (250:500:500) and 500 g in all phases (500 g-All).3. Two broilers per replicate were slaughtered to record carcase traits and gut microbial count on day 43. There was significant improvement in body weight gain (BWG) and reduced FCR in broilers fed 250:250:500 and 250:500:500 g emulsifiers compared to other treatment groups. Carcase traits and faecal microbial count did not differ among treatments. The inclusion of BMD significantly improved nitrogen (N) digestibility compared to the NC group. The digestibility of emulsifier-supplemented groups was similar to those fed by the BMD group except for the 500-All group, which was an intermediary between NC and other emulsifier-fed groups.4. It was concluded that supplementation with emulsifier (250:250:500 or 250:500:500) without antibiotic growth promoter significantly improved FCR and body weight gain similar to broilers receiving antibiotic growth promoter, which was associated with increased ileal digestibility of N and energy.

Nickel (Ni) contamination hinders plant growth and yield. Nitric oxide (NO) and thiourea (Thi) aid plant recovery from heavy metal damage, but their combined effects on pepper (Capsicum annuum ) plant tolerance to Ni stress need more study. Sodium nitroprusside (0.1mM, SNP) and 400mgL-1 Thi, alone and combined, were studied for their impact on pepper growth under Ni toxicity. Ni stress reduces chlorophyll, PSII efficiency and leaf water and sugar content. However, SNP and Thi alleviate these effects by increasing leaf water, proline and sugar content. It also increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase. Nickel stress lowered nitrogen assimilation enzymes (nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthase and glutamate dehydrogenase) and protein content, but increased nitrate, ammonium and amino acid content. SNP and Thi enhanced nitrogen assimilation, increased protein content and improved pepper plant growth and physiological functions during Ni stress. The combined treatment reduced Ni accumulation, increased Ni in leaf cell walls and potentially in root vacuoles, and decreased Ni concentration in cell organelles. It effectively mitigated Ni toxicity to vital organelles, surpassing the effects of SNP or Thi use alone. This study provides valuable insights for addressing heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils and offers potential strategies for sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices.

The present study analyzes the effects of different disaccharide concentrations and two thawing temperatures on the characteristics of ultrarapid frozen (URF) bovine sperm, compared with conventional slow-frozen (CF) sperm. For URF sperm, samples were diluted in media comprising 2% bovine serum albumin (BSA) and various nonpermeable cryoprotectants. Five groups were compared: control (without cryoprotectant), sucrose 0.15 M, sucrose 0.3 M, trehalose 0.15 M, and trehalose 0.3 M. In addition, the influence of warming temperatures, 37°C and 65°C, was analyzed. The aspect of different diluents (by drops) immersed in liquid nitrogen was also evaluated. Sperm quality was assessed by measuring motility, viability, acrosome status, and membrane lipid peroxidation (LPO). Moreover, the cryoresistance rate (CR) was determined. The drops immersed in liquid nitrogen showed that crystallization occurred, but not vitrification. CF sperm exhibited significantly higher scores for total motility (TM) and progressive motility (PM), viability, and acrosome integrity, in contrast with URF samples. Cryoprotectants for URF sperm showed a significant ( p  ≤ 0.05) influence on the TM and PM, viability, acrosome integrity, and CR, but not on LPO. Sperm viability was reduced after ultrarapid freezing, and the control samples were observed to have significantly lower values than those treated with disaccharides. Samples supplemented with 0.3 M sucrose exhibited higher LPO when they were thawed at 37°C. In short, a limited number of spermatozoa were able to maintain their motility and other functional attributes after ultrarapid freezing, but disaccharides showed a moderate protective effect. Samples with trehalose and sucrose at 0.15 and 0.3 M, respectively, showed higher sperm quality than samples containing only BSA. In sum, the function of spermatozoa was moderately maintained when disaccharides were used for ultrarapid freezing, although motility was significantly reduced. In addition, thawing temperatures did not modify the sperm values, suggesting that the easier procedure, that is, 37°C for 30 seconds, can be used.

Hosts rely on the availability of nutrients for growth, and for defense against pathogens. At the same time, changes in host nutrition can alter the dynamics of pathogens that rely on their host for reproduction. For primary producer hosts, enhanced nutrient loads may increase host biomass or pathogen reproduction, promoting faster density-dependent pathogen transmission. However, the effect of elevated nutrients may be reduced if hosts allocate a growth-limiting nutrient to pathogen defense. In canonical disease models, transmission is not a function of nutrient availability. Yet, including nutrient availability is necessary to mechanistically understand the response of infection to changes in the environment. Here, we explore the implications of nutrient-mediated pathogen infectivity and host immunity on infection outcomes. We developed a stoichiometric disease model that explicitly integrates the contrasting dependencies of pathogen infectivity and host immunity on nitrogen (N) and parameterized it for an algal-host system. Our findings reveal dynamic shifts in host biomass build-up, pathogen prevalence, and the force of infection along N supply gradients with N-mediated host infectivity and immunity, compared with a model in which the transmission rate was fixed. We show contrasting responses in pathogen performance with increasing N supply between N-mediated infectivity and N-mediated immunity, revealing an optimum for pathogen transmission at intermediate N supply. This was caused by N limitation of the pathogen at a low N supply and by pathogen suppression via enhanced host immunity at a high N supply. By integrating both nutrient-mediated pathogen infectivity and host immunity into a stoichiometric model, we provide a theoretical framework that is a first step in reconciling the contrasting role nutrients can have on host-pathogen dynamics., (© 2023 The Authors. Importance: Synthetic nitrification inhibitors are routinely used with nitrogen fertilizers to reduce nitrogen losses from agroecosystems, despite having drawbacks like poor efficiency, cost, and entry into the food chain. Plant-derived BNIs constitute a more environmentally conducive alternative. Knowledge on the activity of BNIs to soil nitrifiers is largely based on bioassays with a single Nitrosomonas europaea strain which does not constitute a dominant member of the community of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) in soil. We determined the activity of several plant-derived molecules reported as having activity, including the recently discovered maize-isolated BNI, zeanone, and its natural analog, 2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, on a range of ecologically relevant AOM and one nitrite-oxidizing bacterial culture, expanding our knowledge on the intrinsic inhibition potential of BNIs toward AOM and highlighting the necessity for a deeper understanding of the effect of BNIs on the overall soil microbiome integrity before their further use in agricultural settings., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

This study aimed to examine the impact of nitrogen (N) fertilization on phyllosphere microorganisms in silage maize ( Zea mays ) to enhance the production of high-quality silage. The effects of different N application rates (160, 240, and 320 kg ha -1 ) and maturity stages (flowering and dough stages) on microbial diversity, abundance and physiochemical properties of the leaf surfaces were evaluated in a field experiment. The results showed that N application rates did not significantly impact the abundance of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), aerobic bacteria (AB), yeasts, or molds on the leaf surfaces. However, these microbes were more abundant during the flowering stage compared to the dough stage. Furthermore, the N application rate had no significant impact on inorganic phosphorus, soluble sugar, free amino acids, total phenolic content, and soluble protein concentrations, or pH levels on the leaf surfaces. Notably, these chemical indices were lower during the dough stage. The abundance of Pantoea decreased with higher N application rates, while that of other microorganisms did not changes significantly. The abundance of AB, LAB, yeasts, and molds were positively correlated with soluble sugar, soluble protein, inorganic phosphorus, free amino acids, and total phenolic concentrations on leaf surfaces. Moreover, water loss was negatively correlated with the abundance of AB, LAB, yeasts, and molds, whereas water retention capacity and stomatal density were positively correlated with microbial abundance. Nitrogen plays a significant role in influencing various physiological processes in plants, thereby impacting their ability to withstand abiotic stresses. This study used hydroponics to compare the effects of three nitrogen supply levels (1N, 1/2N and 1/4N) on the antioxidant capacity of rice varieties JJ88 (nitrogen efficient) and XN999 (nitrogen inefficient) with different nitrogen use efficiencies. The results show that compared with the XN999 variety, the JJ88 variety has stronger adaptability to low-nitrogen conditions, which is mainly reflected in the relatively small decrease in dry weight and net photosynthetic rate (Pn); In the early stage of low-nitrogen treatment (0-7 d), the [Formula: see text] production rate, hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of JJ88 variety increased relatively slightly, but the superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxide The activity of enzyme (POD) and catalase (CAT) increased significantly; After low-nitrogen treatment, the ASA-GSH cycle enzyme activity of JJ88 variety was relatively high, and the dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) activity after 14 days of low-nitrogen treatment was higher than that of 1N treatment; The content of reduced ascorbic acid (ASA) in non-enzymatic antioxidants was lower than that of 1N treatment after 14 days of low nitrogen treatment; The contents of oxidized dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) and carotenoids (Car) were higher than those of 1N treatment after 21d and 14d of low nitrogen treatment respectively; The contents of reduced glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and proline (Pro) showed a larger upward trend during the entire low-nitrogen treatment period. Global change influences plant growth by affecting plant morphology and physiology. However, the effects of global change factors vary based on the climate gradient. Here, we established a global database of leaf traits from 192 experiments on elevated CO 2 concentrations (eCO 2 ), drought, N deposition, and warming. The results showed that the leaf mass per area (LMA) significantly increased under eCO 2 and drought conditions but decreased with N deposition, whereas eCO 2 levels and drought conditions reduced stomatal conductance and increased and decreased photosynthetic rates, respectively. Leaf dark respiration (Rd) increased in response to global change, excluding N deposition. Leaf N concentrations declined with eCO 2 but increased with N deposition. Leaf area increased with eCO 2 , N deposition, and warming but decreased with drought. Leaf thickness increased with eCO 2 but decreased with warming. eCO 2 and N deposition enhanced plant water-use efficiency (WUE), eCO 2 and warming increased photosynthetic N-use efficiency (PNUE), while N fertilization reduced PNUE significantly. eCO 2 produced a positive relationship between WUE and PNUE, which were limited under drought but increased in areas with high humidity and high temperature. Trade-offs were observed between WUE and PNUE under drought, N deposition, and warming. The Gram-positive bacteria lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are used in the food industry but are also known for inhibiting certain food spoilage microorganisms, especially fungi. Sources of nitrogen (N) for culture media are generally organic and expensive. Many attempts have been made to formulate economical culture media with alternative N sources obtained from agricultural and industrial byproducts. This study describes the design and optimization of an inexpensive culture medium for Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (formerly Lactobacillus plantarum) MZ809351 strain B31. The culture medium was optimized using statistical experimental designs to identify the factors with the most significant effects on biomass concentration to reduce the overall cost, aiming to obtain a biomass concentration similar to that obtained with the reference LAB culture medium (de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe; MRS). Sodium acetate and magnesium sulfate were the most significant factors (p < 0.005), and their contents were reduced by 22 % and 40 %, respectively, without affecting biomass concentration. Malt germ extract (MGE) was used as an alternative nitrogen source to replace meat extract (ME) and proteose peptone (PP). Through these experiments, the composition of a culture medium that is less expensive than MRS broth was defined, which produced a biomass concentration (3.8 g/L) similar to that obtained with MRS medium. The inhibitory effects of two LAB strains isolated from the Ivory Coast and Mexico on the growth and production of ochratoxin A (OTA) in an ochratoxigenic fungus was tested. The minimum cellular concentration of the LAB to prevent the development of Aspergillus carbonarius Ac 089 and the production of OTA was determined in a model assay in Petri dishes. The conditions to inhibit the germination of A. carbonarius Ac 089 and the production of OTA were found. Using the optimized medium and a ratio of 2 × 10 4 LAB/spore (1 × 10 8  CFU/mL) strain B7 (L. plantarum MZ809351) and 2 × 10 3 LAB/spore (1 × 10 7  CFU/mL) strain B31 (L. plantarum MN922335) completely inhibited the growth of the fungus. A ratio of 2 × 10 5 LAB/spore (1 × 10 9  CFU/mL) was required to inhibit OTA production with strains B7 and B31. Background: When sperm are cryopreserved, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are formed that are detrimental to the sperm., Objective: To evaluate the effects of oleic acid and trehalose added to ram semen extender on sperm parameters, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme levels of spermatozoa following the freeze/thawing processes., Materials and Methods: Ejaculates were collected from four rams and pooled at 35 degree C. Pooled ejaculates were diluted with oleic acid at 0 mM and trehalose at 0 mM (O0 T0) as the control. The Tris-based extender was supplemented with either 0.5 (O0.5) or 1 (O1) mM of oleic acid or 25 (T25) or 50 (T50) mM of trehalose alone, and in combination [0.5 mM oleic acid + 25 mM trehalose (O0.5 T25), 0.5 mM oleic acid + 50 mM trehalose (O0.5 T50), 1 mM oleic acid + 25 mM trehalose (O1 T25) and 1 mM oleic acid + 50 mM trehalose (O1 T50)]. The semen was frozen by the traditional liquid nitrogen vapour method and stored at -196C in the liquid nitrogen tank., Results: Semen extender containing O1T25 significantly improved the total motility, when compared with other treatment groups (P<0.05), except for O1 T50. O1 T50 had a higher viability rate than any other treatment. The addition of O1 T25 and O1 T50 increased DNA and membrane integrity of spermatozoa post-thawing compared to other treatments (P<0.05). The level of MDA was significantly (P<0.05) lower in extenders supplemented with O1, O0.5 T25, O0.5 T50, O1 T25 and O1T50 compared to the other treatment groups. Six new citrinin derivatives (1, 2, 4, 10, 11, and 16), along with fourteen known analogues, were acquired from Penicillium sp. TW131-64, a marine-derived fungus strain. The chemical structures of new compounds were identified through adopting various spectroscopic methods in combination with X-ray diffraction technology and comparison of the experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) with calculated ones. Among them, compounds 1-4 were nitrogen-containing citrinin derivatives existing in enantiomers which were resolved by chiral chromatography. A putative biosynthetic pathway for compounds 1-4 was proposed. Additionally, the antimicrobial activities of these compounds were detected by the broth microdilution assays. Citrinin derivatives 1, 2, 4 and their corresponding enantiomers (1a, 2a, 4a, 1b, 2b, and 4b) exhibited potent antimicrobial activities towards Helicobacter pylori standard strains and multidrug-resistant strains (MIC values ranging from 0.25 to 8 μg/mL), which were comparable or even better than metronidazole. Moreover, compounds 1a and 1b also showed remarkable broad antimicrobial effects towards Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Bacillus subtilis, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE), and Candida albicans. In summary, our studies demonstrated that citrinin enantiomers 1a-4a and 1b-4b, especially 1a and 1b, can be lead compounds in the research and development (R & D) of novel antimicrobial drugs. More stringent discharge standards have led to the development of an alternative nutrient recovery system from wastewater. Microalgae cultivation in wastewater treatment works has presented considerable promise from the perspective of sustainable resource management. Growth kinetics models are useful tools to optimize nutrient recovery from wastewater by algal uptake. Therefore, this research aims to identify the growth kinetics of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under both heterotrophic and phototrophic conditions with different nutrient concentrations that typify those found in wastewater treatment works. In addition, the effects of macronutrients (C, N, and P) on heterotrophic and phototrophic microalgae growth and nutrient recovery were studied. Greater specific growth rates were achieved under heterotrophic conditions than in phototrophic cultivation. The maximum specific growth rates and nutrient recovery efficiencies were achieved at 5 mg P L -1 under both heterotrophic and phototrophic growth conditions. Nitrate was the preferred form of nitrogen source under heterotrophic conditions, while nitrogen sources did not present any significant influences in the phototrophic cultivation. Specific growth rates reported for both heterotrophic and phototrophic microalgae at lower carbon concentrations (3.10 d -1 and 0.46 d -1 , sequentially) were higher than those at higher carbon concentrations (1.95 d -1 and 0.22 d -1 , respectively). Sustained nitrate accumulation in surface water ecosystem was continuously grabbing public attention. Autotrophic denitrification by electron supplement has been applied to overcome the requirement of carbon source, thus the new problem that how to improve the efficiency of extracellular electrons transfer to denitrifiers comes to us. The addition of exogenous electron mediators has been considered as an important strategy to promote extracellular electrons transfer in reductive metabolism. To date, knowledge is lacking about the promoting effects and pathways in nitrate removal by electron mediators. Here, we fully investigated the performance of nitrogen removal as well as quantified the characteristics of biofilms with six electron mediators (riboflavin, flavin mononucleotide, AQS, AQDS, biochar and Nano-Fe 3 O 4 ) treating in microbial electrolytic cell system. The six electron mediators promoted nitrate removal rate by 76.03-90.43 % with electron supplement. The growth and activity of cathodic biofilm, conductive nanowires generation and electrochemically active substance synthesis of extracellular polymeric substances were facilitated by electron mediator addition. Electrochemical analysis revealed that conductivity and redox capacity of cathodic biofilm was increased for accelerating electron transfer. Moreover, they upregulated the abundance of denitrifying communities and denitrifying genes accordingly. Their denitrification efficiency varied due to their promotion ability in the above different strategies and conductive characteristics, and the efficiency could be concluded as: Nano-Fe 3 O 4  > riboflavin > flavin mononucleotide > AQS ≈ AQDS > biochar. Worldwide physiological research has aimed to decelerate the aging of crop leaves by optimizing fertilization measures to improve crop or biomass yield. Solid organic fertilizers can be combined with chemical fertilizers to delay the aging of crop leaves. Biogas slurry is a liquid organic fertilizer produced by the anaerobic fermentation of livestock and poultry manure and other resources, and it can partially replace chemical fertilizers in field application via drip irrigation systems. However, the impact of biogas slurry topdressing on leaf aging remains unclear. This study investigated treatments with no topdressing (control, CK) and five topdressing patterns of biogas slurry replacing chemical fertilizer (nitrogen) at 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, and 0% (100%BS, 75%BS, 50%BS, 25%BS, CF). The effects of different proportions of biogas slurry on leaf senescence rate, photosynthetic pigments, osmotic adjustment substances, antioxidant defense enzymes, and nitrogen metabolism related enzyme activities of maize were analyzed. Subsequently, the mechanisms of biogas slurry topdressing on the leaf senescence rate of maize were explored. The results showed that the mean decreasing rate of relative green leaf area (V m ) treated with biogas slurry decreased by 3.7%-17.1% and the duration of leaf area duration (LAD) increased by 3.7%-17.1% compared with the results for CK. The maximum senescence rate of 100%BS was delayed by 4.4 and 5.6 d compared to the results for CF and CK, respectively. During the senescence of maize leaves, the use of biogas slurry topdressing increased the content of chlorophyll, decreased the water loss and the accumulation rate of malondialdehyde and proline in leaves, and increased the activities of catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase in the later growth and development periods of maize. In addition, biogas slurry topdressing improved the nitrogen transport efficiency of the leaves and ensured continuous and efficient ammonium assimilation. Furthermore, there was a strong correlation between leaf senescence and the investigated physiological indices. Cluster analysis showed that the 100%BS treatment exhibited the most prominent effect on leaf senescence. Background: Soil fertility decline due to nutrient mining coupled with low inorganic fertilizer usage is a major cause of low crop yields across sub-Saharan Africa. Recently, biochar potential to improve soil fertility has gained significant attention but there are limited studies on the use of biochar as an alternative to inorganic fertilizers. In this study, we determined the effect of maize stover biochar without inorganic fertilizers on soil chemical properties, growth and yield of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.). A field experiment was conducted in 2022 for two consecutive seasons in Northern Uganda. The experiment included five treatments; inorganic fertilizer (control), biochar applied at rates of 3.5, 6.9, 13.8 and 27.6 t ha -1 ., Results: In this study, maize stover biochar improved all the soil chemical properties. Compared to the control, pH significantly increased by 27% in the 27.6 t ha -1 while total N increased by 35.6% in the 13.8 t ha -1 . Although P was significantly low in the 3.5 t ha -1 , 6.9 t ha -1 and 13.8 t ha -1 , it increased by 3.9% in the 27.6 t ha -1 . Exchangeable K was significantly increased by 42.7% and 56.7% in the 13.8 t ha -1 and 27.6 t ha -1 respectively. Exchangeable Ca and Mg were also higher in the biochar treatment than the control. Results also showed that plant height, shoot weight, and all yield parameters were significantly higher in the inorganic fertilizer treatment than in the 3.5, 6.9, and 13.8 t ha -1 treatments. Interestingly, maize stover biochar at 27. 6 t ha -1 increased fruit yield by 16.1% compared to the control suggesting it could be used as an alternative to inorganic fertilizer., Conclusions: Maize stover biochar applied at 27.6 t ha -1 improved soil chemical properties especially pH, N, P and K promoting growth and yield of tomatoes. Therefore, maize stover biochar could be recommended as an alternative to expensive inorganic fertilizers for tomato production in Northern Uganda., (© 2023.
