Ferrotoroidicity, the fourth form of primary ferroic order, breaks both space and time inversion symmetry. So far, direct observation of ferrotoroidicity in natural materials remains elusive, which impedes the exploration of ferrotoroidic phase transitions. Here, we overcome the limitations of natural materials using an artificial nanomagnet system that can be characterized at the constituent level and at different effective temperatures. We design a nanomagnet array as to realize a direct-kagome spin ice. This artificial spin ice exhibits robust toroidal moments and a quasi-degenerate ground state with two distinct low-temperature toroidal phases: ferrotoroidicity and paratoroidicity. Using magnetic force microscopy and Monte Carlo simulation, we demonstrate a phase transition between ferrotoroidicity and paratoroidicity, along with a crossover to a non-toroidal paramagnetic phase. Our quasi-degenerate artificial spin ice in a direct-kagome structure provides a model system for the investigation of magnetic states and phase transitions that are inaccessible in natural materials.

Ergodic kinetics, which are critical to equilibrium thermodynamics, can be constrained by a system's topology. We study a model nanomagnetic array in which such constraints visibly affect the behavior. In this system, magnetic excitations connect into thermally active one-dimensional strings whose motion can be imaged in real time. At high temperatures, we observe the merging, breaking, and reconnecting of strings, resulting in the system transitioning between topologically distinct configurations. Below a crossover temperature, the string motion is dominated by simple changes in length and shape. In this low temperature regime, the system is energetically stable because of its inability to explore all possible topological configurations. We combine experiments and numerical simulations to investigate the low energy states and the emergence of topological defects in an artificial colloidal ice in the Cairo geometry. This type of geometry is characterized by a mixed coordination ($z$), with coexistence of both $z=3$ and $z=4$ vertices. We realize this particle ice by confining field tunable paramagnetic colloidal particles within a lattice of topographic double wells at a one to one filling using optical tweezers. By raising the interaction strength via an applied magnetic field, we find that the ice rule breaks down, and positive monopoles with charge $q=+2$ accumulate in the $z = 4$ vertices and are screened by negative ones ($q=-1$) in the $z = 3$. The resulting, strongly coupled state remains disordered. Further, via analysis of the mean chirality associated to each pentagonal plaquette, we find that the disordered ensemble for this geometry is massively degenerate and it corresponds to a frustrated antiferrotoroid., Comment: 4 figures

Research framed around issues of diversity and representation is often controversial. The question of what constitutes a valid critique of such research, or the appropriate manner of airing such a critique, thus has a heavy ideological and political subtext. Here we outline an attempt to comment on a paper recently published in the research journal $\mathit{Physical}$ $\mathit{Review}$ - $\mathit{Physics}$ $\mathit{Education}$ $\mathit{Research}$ (PRPER). The article in question claimed to find evidence of 'whiteness' in introductory physics from analysis of a six-minute video. We argue that even if one accepts the rather tenuous proposition that 'whiteness' is sufficiently well defined to observe, the study lacks the proper controls, checks, and methodology to allow for confirmation or disconfirmation of the authors' interpretation of the data. The authors of the whiteness study, however, make the stunning claim that their study cannot be judged by standards common in science. We summarize our written critique and its fate, along with a brief description of its genesis as a response to an article in which senior officers of the American Physical Society (which publishes PRPER) explained that the appropriate venue for addressing issues with the paper at hand is via normal editorial processes., Comment: 8 pages, no figures. Topological phases of spin liquids with constrained disorder can host a kinetics of fractionalized excitations. However, spin-liquid phases with distinct kinetic regimes have proven difficult to observe experimentally. Here we present a realization of kagome spin ice in the superconducting qubits of a quantum annealer, and use it to demonstrate a field-induced kinetic crossover between spin-liquid phases. Employing fine control over local magnetic fields, we show evidence of both the Ice-I phase and an unconventional field-induced Ice-II phase. In the latter, a charge-ordered yet spin-disordered topological phase, the kinetics proceeds via pair creation and annihilation of strongly correlated, charge conserving, fractionalized excitations. As these kinetic regimes have resisted characterization in other artificial spin ice realizations, our results demonstrate the utility of quantum-driven kinetics in advancing the study of topological phases of spin liquids.

Artificial spin ices are engineered arrays of dipolarly coupled nanobar magnets. They enable direct investigations of fascinating collective phenomena from their diverse microstates. However, experimental access to ground states in the geometrically frustrated systems has proven difficult, limiting studies and applications of novel properties and functionalities from the low energy states. Here, we introduce a convenient approach to control the competing diploar interactions between the neighboring nanomagnets, allowing us to tailor the vertex degeneracy of the ground states. We achieve this by tuning the length of selected nanobar magnets in the spin ice lattice. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by realizing multiple low energy microstates in a Kagome artificial spin ice, particularly the hardly accessible long range ordered ground state - the spin crystal state. Long-range ordering is typically associated with a decrease in entropy. Yet, it can also be driven by increasing entropy in certain special cases. We demonstrate that artificial spin ice arrays of single-domain nanomagnets can be designed to produce entropy-driven order. We focus on the tetris artificial spin ice structure, a highly frustrated array geometry with a zero-point Pauli entropy, which is formed by selectively creating regular vacancies on the canonical square ice lattice. We probe thermally active tetris artificial spin ice both experimentally and through simulations, measuring the magnetic moments of the individual nanomagnets. We find two-dimensional magnetic ordering in one subset of these moments, which we demonstrate to be induced by disorder (i.e., increased entropy) in another subset of the moments. In contrast with other entropy-driven systems, the discrete degrees of freedom in tetris artificial spin ice are binary and are both designable and directly observable at the microscale, and the entropy of the system is precisely calculable in simulations. Spin glasses, generally defined as disordered systems with randomized competing interactions, are a widely investigated complex system. Theoretical models describing spin glasses are broadly used in other complex systems, such as those describing brain function, error-correcting codes, or stock-market dynamics. This wide interest in spin glasses provides strong motivation to generate an artificial spin glass within the framework of artificial spin ice systems. Here, we present the experimental realization of an artificial spin glass consisting of dipolar coupled single-domain Ising-type nanomagnets arranged onto an interaction network that replicates the aspects of a Hopfield neural network. Using cryogenic x-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM), we performed temperature-dependent imaging of thermally driven moment fluctuations within these networks and observed characteristic features of a two-dimensional Ising spin glass. Specifically, the temperature dependence of the spin glass correlation function follows a power law trend predicted from theoretical models on two-dimensional spin glasses. Furthermore, we observe clear signatures of the hard to observe rugged spin glass free energy in the form of sub-aging, out of equilibrium autocorrelations and a transition from stable to unstable dynamics., Comment: Initial submission to Nature Physics. 20 pages, 4 figures

The notion of magnetic monopoles has puzzled physicists since the introduction of Maxwell's Equations and famously Dirac had hypothesized them in the context of quantum mechanics. While they have proved experimentally elusive as elementary particles, the concept has come to describe excitations or topological defects in various material systems, from liquid crystals, to Hall systems, skyrmion lattices, and Bose-Einstein condensate. Perhaps the most versatile manifestation of magnetic monopoles as quasiparticles in matter has been in so-called spin ice materials. There, they represent violations of the ice rule, carry a magnetic charge, and can move freely unbound. Spin ice emergent magnetic monopoles appear at the atomic scale in rare earth pyrochlores or at the nano-scale in artificial spin ices systems. Here we demonstrate for the first time that the notion of magnetic monopoles can be transported at the macroscopic scale. We have built a mechano-magnet realized via 3D-printing, that consists of mechanical rotors on which macroscopic magnets can pivot. By controlling the relative height of the rotors we can achieve different regimes for magnetic monopoles, including the free monopole state. We then explore their driven dynamics under field. In the future, integration of our proof of principle in an elastic matrix can lead to novel macroscopic mechano-magnetic materials, to explore unusual piezomagnetism and magnetostriction, with applications to actuators and soft-robotics., Comment: 8 pages + supplementary material

In the last decade, nanoscale resistive devices with memory have been the subject of intense study because of their possible use in brain-inspired computing. However, operational endurance is one of the limiting factors in the adoption of such technology. For this reason, we discuss the emergence of current-induced memristance in magnetic materials, known for their durability. We show analytically and numerically that a single ferromagnetic layer can possess GHz memristance, due to a combination of two factors: a current-induced transfer of angular momentum (Zhang-Li torque) and the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). We term the resulting effect the anisotropic magneto-memristance (AMM). We connect the AMM to the topology of the magnetization state, within a simple model of a 1-dimensional annulus-shaped magnetic layer, confirming the analytical results with micromagnetic simulations for permalloy. We consider a pure square spin ice, that is a square ice where only nearest neighbors are coupled. A gauge-free duality between the perpendicular and collinear structure leads to a natural description in terms of topological currents and charges as the relevant degrees of freedom. That, in turn, can be expressed via a continuous field theory where the discrete spins are subsumed into entropic interactions among charges and currents. This approach produces structure factors, correlations, and susceptibilities for spins, monopoles, and currents. It also generalizes to non-zero temperature the height formalism of the disordered ground state. 3D nano-architectures present a new paradigm in modern condensed matter physics with numerous applications in photonics, biomedicine, and spintronics. They are promising for the realisation of 3D magnetic nano-networks for ultra-fast and low-energy data storage. Frustration in these systems can lead to magnetic charges or magnetic monopoles, which can function as mobile, binary information carriers. However, Dirac strings in 2D artificial spin ices bind magnetic charges, while 3D dipolar counterparts require cryogenic temperatures for their stability. Here, we present a micromagnetic study of a highly-frustrated 3D artificial spin ice harboring tension-free Dirac strings with unbound magnetic charges at room temperature. We use micromagnetic simulations to demonstrate that the mobility threshold for magnetic charges is by $\SI{2}{eV}$ lower than their unbinding energy. By applying global magnetic fields, we steer magnetic charges in a given direction omitting unintended switchings. We present a numerical study on a disordered artificial spin-ice system which interpolates between the long-range ordered square ice and the fully degenerate shakti ice. Starting from the square-ice geometry, disorder is implemented by adding vertical/horizontal magnetic islands to the center of some randomly chosen square plaquettes of the array, at different densities. When no island is added we have ordered square ice. When all square plaquettes have been modified we obtain shakti ice, which is disordered yet in a topological phase corresponding to the Rys F-model. In between, geometrical frustration due to these additional center spins disrupts the long-range Ising order of square-ice, giving rise to a spin-glass regime at low temperatures. The concept of spin ice can be extended to a general graph. We study the degeneracy of spin ice graph on arbitrary interaction structures via graph theory. Via the mapping of spin ices to the Ising model, we clarify whether the inverse mapping is possible via a modified Krausz construction. From the gauge freedom of frustrated Ising systems, we derive exact, general results about frustration and degeneracy. We demonstrate for the first time that every spin ice graph, with the exception of the 1D Ising model, is degenerate. We then study how degeneracy scales in size, using the mapping between Eulerian trails and spin ice manifolds, and a permanental identity for the number of Eulerian orientations. We show that the Bethe permanent technique provides both an estimate and a lower bound to the frustration of spin ices on arbitrary graphs of even degree. Mechanical metamaterials present a promising platform for seemingly impossible mechanics. They often require incompatibility of their elementary building blocks, yet a comprehensive understanding of its role remains elusive. Relying on an analogy to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic binary spin interactions, we present a universal approach to identify and analyze topological mechanical defects for arbitrary building blocks. We underline differences between two- and three-dimensional metamaterials, and show how topological defects can steer stresses and strains in a controlled and non-trivial manner and can inspire the design of materials with hitherto unknown complex mechanical response.

Competing ground states may lead to topologically constrained excitations such as domain walls or quasiparticles, which govern metastable states and their dynamics. Domain walls and more exotic topological excitations are well studied in magnetic systems such as artificial spin ice, in which nanoscale magnetic dipoles are placed on geometrically frustrated lattices, giving rise to highly degenerate ground states. We propose a mechanical spin-ice constructed from a lattice of floppy, bistable square unit cells. We compare the domain wall excitations that arise in this metamaterial to their magnetic counterparts, finding that new behaviors emerge in this overdamped mechanical system. By tuning the ratios of the internal elements of the unit cell, we control the curvature and propagation speed of internal domain walls. We change the domain wall morphology from a binary, strictly spin-like regime, to a more continuous, elastic regime. In the elastic regime, we inject, manipulate, and expel domain walls via textured forcing at the boundaries. The system exhibits dynamical hysteresis, and we find a first-order dynamical transition as a function of the driving frequency. We demonstrate a forcing protocol that produces multiple, topologically-distinct steady cycles, which are protected by the differences in their internal domain wall arrangements. These distinct steady cycles rapidly proliferate as the complexity of the applied forcing texture is increased, thus suggesting that such mechanical systems could serve as useful model systems to study multistability, glassiness, and memory in materials., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

Spin ices can now be fabricated in a variety of geometries which control their collective behavior and exotic properties. Therefore, their proper framework is graph theory. We relate spin ice notions such as ice rule, ice manifold, Coulomb phases, charges and monopoles, to graph-theoretical notions, such as balance, in/out-degrees, and Eulerianicity. We then propose a field-theoretical treatment in which topological charges and monopoles are the degrees of freedom while the binary spins are subsumed into entropic interaction among charges. We show that for a spin ice on a graph in a Gaussian approximation, the kernel of the entropic interaction is the inverse of the graph Laplacian, and we compute screening functions from the graph spectra as Green operators for the screened Poisson problem on a graph. We describe degenerate square spin as an ensemble of magnetic monopoles coupled via an emergent entropic field that subsumes the effect of the underlying spin vacuum. We compute their effective free energy, entropic interaction, correlations, screening, and structure factors that coincide with the experimental ones. Unlike in pyrochlore ices, a dimensional mismatch between real and entropic interactions leads to weak singularities at the pinch points and algebraic correlations at long distance. One-dimensional strings of local excitations are a fascinating feature of the physical behavior of strongly correlated topological quantum matter. Here we study strings of local excitations in a classical system of interacting nanomagnets, the Santa Fe Ice geometry of artificial spin ice. We measured the moment configuration of the nanomagnets, both after annealing near the ferromagnetic Curie point and in a thermally dynamic state. While the Santa Fe Ice lattice structure is complex, we demonstrate that its disordered magnetic state is naturally described within a framework of emergent strings. We show experimentally that the string length follows a simple Boltzmann distribution with an energy scale that is associated with the system's magnetic interactions and is consistent with theoretical predictions. The results demonstrate that string description and associated topological characteristics are not unique to quantum models but can also provide a simplifying description of complex classical systems with non-trivial frustration., Comment: 46 pages including SI

Artificial spin ices are frustrated spin systems that can be engineered, wherein fine tuning of geometry and topology has allowed the design and characterization of exotic emergent phenomena at the constituent level. Here we report a realization of spin ice in a lattice of superconducting qubits. Unlike conventional artificial spin ice, our system is disordered by both quantum and thermal fluctuations. The ground state is classically described by the ice rule, and we achieve control over a fragile degeneracy point leading to a Coulomb phase. The ability to pin individual spins allows us to demonstrate Gauss's law for emergent effective monopoles in two dimensions. The demonstrated qubit control lays the groundwork for potential future study of topologically protected artificial quantum spin liquids.

We relate the anomalous noise found experimentally in spin ice to the subdiffusion of magnetic monopoles. Because monopoles are emergent particles, they do not move in a structureless vacuum. Rather, the underlying spin ensemble filters the thermal white noise, leading to non-trivial coevolution. Thus, monopoles can be considered as random walkers under the effect of stochastic forces only as long as those are not trivially white, but instead subsume the evolution of the spin vacuum. Via this conceptualization, we conjecture relations between the color of the noise and other observables, such as relaxation time, monopole density, the dynamic exponent, and the order of the annihilation reaction, which lead us to introduce spin ice specific critical exponents in a neighborhood of the ice manifold., Comment: 5 pages, zero figures

Proceeding from the more general to the more concrete, we propose an equilibrium field theory describing spin ice systems in terms of topological charges and magnetic monopoles. We show that for a spin ice on a graph, the entropic interaction in a Gaussian approximation is the inverse of the graph Laplacian matrix, while the screening function for external charges is the inverse of the screened laplacian. We particularize the treatment to square and pyrochlore ice. For square ice we highlight the gauge-free duality between direct and perpendicular structure in terms of symmetry between charges and currents, typical of magnetic fragmentation in a two-dimensional setting. We derive structure factors, correlations, correlation lengths, and susceptibilities for spins, topological charges, and currents. We show that the divergence of the correlation length at low temperature is exponential and inversely proportional to the mean square charge. While in three dimension real and entropic interactions among monopoles are both 3D-Coulomb, in two dimension the former is a 3D-Coulomb and the latter 2D-Coulomb, or logarithmic, leading to weak singularities in correspondence of the pinch points and destroying charge screening. Both the Rys F-model and antiferromagnetic square ice posses the same ordered, antiferromagnetic ground state, but the ordering transition is of second order in the latter, and of infinite order in the former. To tie this difference to topological properties and their breakdown, we introduce a Faraday line representation where loops carry the energy and magnetization of the system. Because of the absence of monopoles in the F-model, its loops have distinct topological properties, absent in square ice, and which allow for a natural partition of its phase space into topological sectors. Then the N\'eel temperature corresponds to a transition from trivial to non-trivial topological sectors. Moreover, its zero susceptibility below a critical field is explained by the homotopy invariance of its magnetization. In spin ices, instead, monopoles destroy the homotopy invariance of the magnetization, and thus erase this rich topological structure. We have performed a detailed study of thermal annealing of the moment configuration in artificial spin ice. Permalloy (Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$) artificial spin ice samples were examined in the prototypical square ice geometry, studying annealing as a function of island thickness, island shape, and annealing temperature and duration. We also measured the Curie temperature as a function of film thickness, finding that thickness has a strong effect on the Curie temperature in regimes of relevance to many studies of the dynamics of artificial spin ice systems. Increasing the interaction energy between island moments and reducing the energy barrier to flipping the island moments allows the system to more closely approach the collective low energy state of the moments upon annealing, suggesting new channels for understanding the thermalization processes in these important model systems., Comment: The following article has been accepted by APL Materials. Geometric frustration and the ice rule are two concepts that are intimately connected and widespread across condensed matter. The first refers to the inability of a system to satisfy competing interactions in the presence of spatial constraints. The second, in its more general sense, represents a prescription for the minimization of the topological charges in a constrained system. Both can lead to manifolds of high susceptibility and non-trivial, constrained disorder where exotic behaviors can appear and even be designed deliberately. In this Colloquium, we describe the emergence of geometric frustration and the ice rule in soft condensed matter. This Review excludes the extensive developments of mathematical physics within the field of geometric frustration, but rather focuses on systems of confined micro- or mesoscopic particles that emerge as a novel paradigm exhibiting spin degrees of freedom. In such systems, geometric frustration can be engineered artificially by controlling the spatial topology and geometry of the lattice, the position of the individual particle units, or their relative filling fraction. These capabilities enable the creation of novel and exotic phases of matter, and also potentially lead towards technological applications related to memory and logic devices that are based on the motion of topological defects. We review the rapid progress in theory and experiments and discuss the intimate physical connections with other frustrated systems at different length scales.

We study the implications of the anisotropic magnetic resistance on permalloy nanowires, and in particular on the property of the resistance depending on the type of lattice. We discuss how the internal spin configuration of artificial spin ice nanowires can affect their effective resistive state, and which mechanisms can introduce a current-dependent effect dynamic resistive state. We discuss a spin-induced thermal phase-change mechanism, and an athermal domain-wall spin inversion. We propose the first Skyrmion Spin Ice, realized via confined, interacting liquid crystal skyrmions. Skyrmions in a chiral nematic liquid crystal behave as quasi-particles that can be dynamically confined, bound, and created or annihilated individually with ease and precision. We show that these quasi-particles can be employed to realize binary variables that interact to form ice-rule states. Because of their unique versatility, liquid crystal skyrmions can open entirely novel avenues in the field of frustrated systems. The realization and study of arrays of interacting magnetic nanoislands, such as artificial spin ices, have reached mature levels of control that allow design and demonstration of exotic, collective behaviors not seen in natural materials. Advances in the direct manipulation of their local, binary moments also suggest a use as nanopatterned, interacting memory media, for computation {\it within} a magnetic memory. Recent experimental work has demonstrated the possibility of building logic gates from clusters of interacting magnetic domains, and yet the possibility of large scale integration of such gates can prove problematic even at the theoretical level. Here we introduce theoretically complete sets of logical gates, in principle realizable in an experiment, and we study the feasibility of their integration into tree-like circuits. By evaluating the fidelity control parameter between their collective behavior and their expected logic functionality we determine conditions for integration. Artificial particle ices are model systems of constrained, interacting particles. They have been introduced theoretically to study ice-manifolds emergent from frustration, along with domain wall and grain boundary dynamics, doping, pinning-depinning, controlled transport of topological defects, avalanches, and memory effects. Recently such particle-based ices have been experimentally realized with vortices in nano-patterned superconductors or gravitationally trapped colloids. Here we demonstrate that, although these ices are generally considered equivalent to magnetic spin ices, they can access a novel spectrum of phenomenologies that are inaccessible to the latter. With experiments, theory and simulations we demonstrate that in mixed coordination geometries, entropy-driven negative monopoles spontaneously appear at a density determined by the vertex-mixture ratio. Unlike its spin-based analogue, the colloidal system displays a "fragile ice" manifold, where local energetics oppose the ice rule, which is instead enforced through conservation of the global topological charge. While particle-based ices are often considered essentially equivalent to magnet-based spin ices, the two differ essentially in frustration and energetics. We show that at equilibrium particle-based ices correspond exactly to spin ices coupled to a background field. In trivial geometries, such a field has no effect, and the two systems are indeed thermodynamically equivalent. Artificial Spin Ices are two dimensional arrays of magnetic, interacting nano-structures whose geometry can be chosen at will, and whose elementary degrees of freedom can be characterized directly. They were introduced at first to study frustration in a controllable setting, to mimic the behavior of spin ice rare earth pyrochlores, but at more useful temperature and field ranges and with direct characterization, and to provide practical implementation to celebrated, exactly solvable models of statistical mechanics previously devised to gain an understanding of degenerate ensembles with residual entropy. With the evolution of nano--fabrication and of experimental protocols it is now possible to characterize the material in real-time, real-space, and to realize virtually any geometry, for direct control over the collective dynamics. This has recently opened a path toward the deliberate design of novel, exotic states, not found in natural materials, and often characterized by topological properties. Without any pretense of exhaustiveness, we will provide an introduction to the material, the early works, and then, by reporting on more recent results, we will proceed to describe the new direction, which includes the design of desired topological states and their implications to kinetics., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures, 116 references, Book Chapter

The change in electrical resistance associated with the application of an external magnetic field is known as the magnetoresistance (MR). The measured MR is quite complex in the class of connected networks of single-domain ferromagnetic nanowires, known as "artificial spin ice", due to the geometrically-induced collective behavior of the nanowire moments. We have conducted a thorough experimental study of the MR of a connected honeycomb artificial spin ice, and we present a simulation methodology for understanding the detailed behavior of this complex correlated magnetic system. Our results demonstrate that the behavior, even at low magnetic fields, can be well-described only by including significant contributions from the vertices at which the legs meet, opening the door to new geometrically-induced MR phenomena.

We introduce a minimal agent-based model to qualitatively conceptualize the allocation of limited wealth among more abundant opportunities. We study the interplay of power, satisfaction and frustration in distribution, concentration, and inequality of wealth. Our framework allows us to compare subjective measures of frustration and satisfaction to collective measures of fairness in wealth distribution, such as the Lorenz curve and the Gini index. We find that a completely libertarian, law-of-the-jungle setting, where every agent can acquire wealth from, or lose wealth to, anybody else invariably leads to a complete polarization of the distribution of wealth vs. opportunity. The picture is however dramatically modified when hard constraints are imposed over agents, and they are limited to share wealth with neighbors on a network. We then propose an out of equilibrium dynamics {\it of} the networks, based on a competition between power and frustration in the decision-making of agents that leads to network coevolution. We show that the ratio of power and frustration controls different dynamical regimes separated by kinetic transitions and characterized by drastically different values of the indices of equality. The interplay of power and frustration leads to the emergence of three self-organized social classes, lower, middle, and upper class, whose interactions drive a cyclical regime., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, supplementary material, and 3 animations

We study the thermally activated, slow conversion of the hysteretically retained $\omega$ phase into stable $\alpha$ phase in recovered samples of shocked zirconium. The $\omega$-phase decays in time following an algebraic law, unlike the predictions of the nucleation-growth framework for first order transitions, and residual volume fractions of phases and dislocation densities are related by a power law. We propose an explanation for the annealing mechanism through coupled dynamics of dislocations and phase change. We find that the long-time behavior is controlled by the interplay of dislocations, shear fluctuations, and remnant volume fractions of phases, which lead to an algebraic decay in time. For late time, thermally activated quantities such as the dislocation mobility and nucleation rate set the timescale and control the algebraic behavior, respectively. At high enough temperatures this behavior is effectively indistinguishable from standard Avrami kinetics., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We experimentally demonstrate that arrays of interacting nanoscale ferromagnetic islands, known as artificial spin ice, develop reproducible microstates upon cycling an applied magnetic field. The onset of this memory effect is determined by the strength of the applied field relative to the array coercivity. Specifically, when the applied field strength is almost exactly equal to the array coercivity, several training cycles are required before the array achieves a nearly completely repeatable microstate, whereas when the applied field strength is stronger or weaker than the array coercivity, a repeatable microstate is achieved after the first minor loop. We show through experiment and simulation that this memory exhibited by artificial spin ice is due to a ratchet effect on interacting, magnetically-charged defects in the island moment configuration and to the complexity of the network of strings of reversed moments that forms during magnetization reversal., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

The low-energy physics of (quasi)degenerate one-dimensional systems is typically understood as the particle-like dynamics of kinks between stable, ordered structures. Such dynamics, we show, becomes highly non-trivial when the ground states are topologically constrained: a dynamics of the domains rather than on the domains which the kinks separate. Motivated by recently reported observations of charged polymers physisorbed on nanotubes, we study kinks between helical structures of a string wrapping around a cylinder. While their motion cannot be disentangled from domain dynamics, and energy and momentum is not concentrated in the solitons, the dynamics of the domains can be folded back into a one-particle picture., Comment: 5 pages 4 figures. We show that a mesoscale model, with a minimal number of parameters, can well describe the thermomechanical and mechanochemical behavior of homogeneous DNA at thermal equilibrium under tension and torque. We predict critical temperatures for denaturation under torque and stretch, phase diagrams for stable DNA, probe/response profiles under mechanical loads, and the density of dsDNA as a function of stretch and twist. We compare our predictions with available single molecule manipulation experiments and find strong agreement. In particular we elucidate the difference between angularly constrained and unconstrained overstretching. We propose that the smoothness of the angularly constrained overstreching transition is a consequence of the molecule being in the vicinity of criticality for a broad range of values of applied tension., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

We investigate the recently reported analogies between pinned vortices in nano-structured superconductors or colloids in optical traps, and spin ice materials. The frustration of colloids and vortices differs essentially from spin ice. However, their effective energetics is made identical by the contribution of an emergent field associated to the topological charge, thus leading to a (quasi) ice manifold for lattices of even (odd) coordination. The equivalence extends to the local low-energy dynamics of the ice manifold, where the effect of geometric hard constraints can be subsumed into the spatial modulation of the emergent field, which mediates an entropic interaction between topological charges. There, as in spin ice materials, genuine ice manifolds enter a Coulomb phase, whereas quasi-ice manifolds posses a well defined screening length, provided by a plasma of embedded topological charges. The equivalence between the two systems breaks down in lattices of mixed coordination because of topological charge transfer between sub-latices. Artificial spin ice is a frustrated magnetic two-dimensional nano-material, recently employed to study variety of tailor-designed unusual collective behaviours. Recently proposed extensions to three dimensions are based on self-assembly techniques and allow little control over geometry and disorder. We present a viable design for the realization of a three-dimensional artificial spin ice with the same level of precision and control allowed by lithographic nano-fabrication of the popular two-dimensional case. Our geometry is based on layering already available two-dimensional artificial spin ice and leads to an arrangement of ice-rule-frustrated units which is topologically equivalent to that of the tetrahedra in a pyrochlore lattice. Consequently, we show, it exhibits a genuine ice phase and its excitations are, as in natural spin ice materials, magnetic monopoles interacting via Coulomb law., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures
