Abstract

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) systems aim to understand human behaviour and assign a label to each action, attracting significant attention in computer vision due to their wide range of applications. HAR can leverage various data modalities, such as RGB images and video, skeleton, depth, infrared, point cloud, event stream, audio, acceleration, and radar signals. Each modality provides unique and complementary information suited to different application scenarios. Consequently, numerous studies have investigated diverse approaches for HAR using these modalities. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the latest advancements in HAR from 2014 to 2024, focusing on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches categorized by input data modalities. We review both single-modality and multi-modality techniques, highlighting fusion-based and co-learning frameworks. Additionally, we cover advancements in hand-crafted action features, methods for recognizing human-object interactions, and activity detection. Our survey includes a detailed dataset description for each modality and a summary of the latest HAR systems, offering comparative results on benchmark datasets. Finally, we provide insightful observations and propose effective future research directions in HAR.

12. High-precision and high-accuracy stereophotogrammetric image analysis for small to large strain deformation measurement in triaxial apparatus

Abstract

A deformation measurement system for laboratory soil testing based on stereophotogrammetric image analysis was developed with a purpose of characterising soil behaviour continuously from small to large strains. The system is applicable to triaxial tests with pressure chamber and confining fluid by correcting the refraction-induced distortion of images by ray tracing. In comparison to similar existing studies, the present study put priority in precision and accuracy in relative displacement tracking, which is the key feature in resolving small strain in soil specimen and characterising its stiffness. The displacement tracking is performed with a hybrid algorithm combining Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) for primary target matching and subpixel Digital Image Correlation (DIC) for more precise image matching. The deformation of clay samples with and without end lubrication was compared by visualising the deformation at different levels of strain. This paper is basically a summary of Nishimura (2022). Another example of application in laboratory testing involving fine particle suffusion is also shown. Some notes on implementation of the technique for good practice and on future development are additionally described.

Abstract

The one-dimensional thermo-mechanical behaviour of two peats was investigated through consolidation tests, including incremental loadings and constant-rate-of-strain loadings, under a variety of temperature-stress conditions. As an appropriate expression of highly compressible materials, the natural strain was employed instead of conventional engineering strain, which eliminates the apparent stress dependency of the compression index and the coefficient of secondary compression. Test results suggest the applicability of an isotach approach to the two peats used in this study. The temperature dependency of the coefficient of secondary compression defined with natural strain, λ*α, is very small. All the results summarized on the effective stress-strain plane show that there exists a unique Normal Compression Line (NCL) corresponding to each combination of temperature and strain rate. The NCLs are parallel to each other. Finally, in an attempt to construct a constitutive model, the temperature dependency of the NCL was quantified by introducing a constant, λ*T. By using the two parameters, λ*α and λ*T, which describe the strain rate- and temperature-dependent characteristics, respectively, a 1-D thermo-mechanical behaviour observed in this study will be modelled in a simple manner.

Abstract

A new interpretation of failure of frozen clay in tension is presented, through a unique test programme applying 'triaxial tension', in which the axial stress was reduced to negative values while zero or positive radial stress was maintained. The limit strength is determined by a meeting point of two competing mechanisms – strain hardening in shear, and progressively degrading tensile strength as the shear deformation disturbs the soil structure. In some conditions, the limit strength observed in tension is actually given by the shear resistance limit, not by a true tensile strength. This interpretation is successful in explaining apparently unclear confining stress dependency of the observed failure envelopes at low stresses. The influence of the pre-freezing effective stress, post-freezing total stress and pre-freezing pore-water pressure on the strength was also investigated. The tensile strength degradation was formulated by using the specific work input to estimate the operational tensile strength and the strain at which a tensile rupture occurs. Cooling after shear deformation apparently healed the damage and recovered the initial tensile strength, allowing the stress–strain curve to significantly overshoot the proposed tensile strength line. Abstract

Aggregation, as an operation of cartographic generalization, provides an effective means of abstracting the configuration of building features by combining them according to the scale reduction of the 2D map. Automating this design process effectively helps professional cartographers design both paper and digital maps, but finding the best aggregation result from the numerous combinations of building features has been a challenge. This paper presents a novel approach to assist cartographers in interactively designing the aggregation of building features in scale‐aware map visualization. Our contribution is to provide an appropriate set of candidates for the cartographer to choose from among a limited number of possible combinations of building features. This is achieved by collecting locally optimal solutions that emerge in the course of aggregation operations, formulated as a label cost optimization problem. Users can also explore better aggregation results by interactively adjusting the design parameters to update the set of possible combinations, along with an operator to force the combination of manually selected building features. Each cluster of aggregated building features is tightly enclosed by a concave hull, which is later adaptively simplified to abstract its boundary shapes. Experimental design examples and evaluations by expert cartographers demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach to interactive aggregation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
