3. Women's Employment and Educational Attainment : A Cross-National Comparison

Abstract

This study explores the variations in the relationship between women's employment and educational attainment, as well as in women's employment status itself, in 12 industrial societies, referring to welfare regime typology. The International Social Survey Programme (ISSP）2012 survey on 'Family and Changing Gender Roles IV' is used for cross－national analysis. The results suggest that women's employment rate can be explained by the type ofwelfare regime to a certain extent. However, once we break down the employment rate into full-time and part-time components, a great varlatlon emerges within welfare regime. With regard to the relationship between women's educational attainment and employment, welfare regime only partly explains the variation among the 12 countries. Furthermore the lselationship between womens full-time and part-time employment and their educational attainment varies within each type of welfare regime.

紀要論文, 家族関係学は，家庭科教育における「家族関係」の学習の学問的基礎となる 領域であり，社会学・法学・心理学等の多様な領域にまたがる学際的な学問領 域である．本稿では，家族社会学に依拠した家族関係学のテキスト分析をおこ ない，家族社会学が家族関係学におよぼしてきたインパクト，それがひいては 家庭科教育に対してどのような示唆を与えうるかを検討した． 戦後出版されたテキストを検討したところ，1960年代以降，家族社会学に依 拠した家族関係学のテキストは，一定の出版件数を保ってきた．これは家族社 会学が，家族関係学を支える一領域であり続けてきたことを示すものでもある． それらのテキストの内容を検討したところ，家族社会学は家族関係学に，①家 族を実証的に分析し，理解するための概念，および，②家族が論じられる際に しばしばともなう規範性を相対化する視点を提供してきたといえる．これらの ことから，家族社会学は家庭科教育に対して，①実証的な知見に基づいた家族 に対する認識を提供し，②家族に関する規範を相対化する視点の重要性を指摘 してきたといえる． Studies of family relations are interdisciplinary research area which is based on the study fields such as sociology, judicial science, and psychology; they serve as an academic basis for curriculum of home economics education, particularly for the study about families. This paper explores the impact of family sociology on studies of family relations and home economics education, by analyzing textbooks of family relations which are written based on family sociology. By reviewing the published textbooks of family relations since 1945, it was found that there has been stable number of family relations textbooks from sociological point of view, particularly since the 1960s, which implies that family sociology has played an important role in the studies of family relations. An analysis of textbooks showed that family sociology have provided concepts for empirical studies about families, and a comparative perspective of family norms for the study of family relations. Therefore, family sociology can contribute to home economics education by providing knowledge about families based on empirical evidence, and by suggesting the importance of comparative perspective on family norms.

Abstract

In this study, we investigated the effects of the branched-chain amino acid L-isoleucine (lle) on both obesity and glucose/ fat homeostasis in mice that were fed a high-fat (45% energy) diet. The mice were divided into different treatment groups and given a high-fat diet for 6 wk. During the last 4 wk, lle was dissolved and added to the drinking water to a final concentration of 2.5%. The control mice received vehicle alone. The mice in the lie group had an almost 6% lower body weight gain and 49% less epididymal white adipose tissue (WAT) mass with the control group (P< 0.05). The hepatic and skeletal muscle triglyceride (TG) concentrations and degree of hyperinsulinemia in the lie group mice were also lower than the control group by 38, 47, and 39%, respectively (P< 0.05). The WAT leptin concentration was also lower, whereas that of adiponectin was higher, in the lie group compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The hepatic levels of protein CD36/ fatty acid translocase, PPAR[alpha], and uncoupling protein (UCP) 2 and the levels of UCP3 in skeletal muscle were all greater in the lie group than in the control mice (P < 0.05). These results demonstrate that the liver and muscle TG concentrations are both lowered by lie treatment. In addition, the PPAR[alpha] and UCP expression levels in the mouse tissues were greater in the lie group compared with the controls. 20. Domestic help and the gender division of domestic labor during the COVID‐19 pandemic: Gender inequality among Japaneseparents

Abstract

The enduring COVID‐19 pandemic has gradually transformed our everyday lives. This study focuses on changes in work and family arrangements, with particular focus on changes in domestic help, and examines its impact on the division of domestic labor. Using a social survey of work and the family conducted in November 2020 and May 2021, the results show that from January 2020 (pre‐pandemic) to May 2021, approximately 40% of respondents experienced a reduced gender gap for housework and childcare, while a large gender gap is still observed in the absolute frequency of undertaking domestic labor. Some lifestyle changes triggered by the pandemic, such as an increase in the use of takeaways or delivery meals, and the expansion of working from home, are found to be able to contribute a shift toward more equal sharing of domestic labor. However, the fact that the access to such lifestyle changes is more common among those with a relatively high income or high educational background suggests that the lifestyle changes imposed by the pandemic may exacerbate class disparities in the gender gap in domestic labor. Furthermore, the results show that decreased kinship support results in a greater childcare burden being placed on women.

Abstract

This book explores the employment of Japanese women born in the 1960s and 1970s who experienced childbirth and raised children in the 1990s and the early 2000s. During this period, the Japanese economy experienced a severe recession. It has affected the firm-specific internal labour market and on employment practices, which in turn are thought to have greatly influenced Japanese women's employment. On the other hand, the fertility rate declined and social policies to support women's employment began to be implemented after the 1990s. This book explores how these labour market structure and social policies interact to affect Japanese women's employment. The book first analyses the employment patterns of women born between the 1920s and 1970s and examines how they have varied among different birth cohorts. Then, the employment behaviour of women before and after childbirth through the post-child-rearing period, as well as the working career of single mothers are explored for women born in the 1960s and 1970s. Based on the data analyses, the concluding part of this book discusses how the labour market structure and social policies during the 1990s and early 2000s interactively influenced employment behaviour of Japanese women, and some suggestions are put forward for changing women's employment during the child-rearing years.

Abstract

In yogurt, the formation of formate by Streptococcus thermophilus stimulates the activity of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (L. bulgaricus). However, there have been no reports how formic acid acts on the exopolysaccharide (EPS) production of L. bulgaricus. Here, the effect of formate on the EPS production in skim milk by L. bulgaricus OLL1073R-1 was investigated. After incubation for 24 hr with 100 mg/l formate, cell proliferation and lactic acid production were accelerated. The viable and total cell numbers were increased about ten- and four-fold, respectively. The amount of EPS in culture with formate (~116 µg/ml) was also four-fold greater than that of the control (~27 µg/ml). Although elongation of cells was observed at 6 hr of cultivation in both cultures, cells cultivated with formate returned to a normal shape after incubation for 24 hr. The sensitivity to cell wall hydrolase and composition of surface layer proteins, as well as the cell membrane fatty acid composition of L. bulgaricus OLL1073R-1, were not influenced by formate. However, differences were observed in intracellular fatty acid compositions and sensitivity to antibiotics. Cell length and surface damage returned to normal in cultures with formate. These observations suggest that formic acid is necessary for normal cell growth of L. bulgaricus OLL1073R-1 and higher EPS production.

Abstract

The Great East Japan Earthquake struck off the Tohoku and caused a tsunami in 2011. Most of the microbial characteristics of tsunami‐affected soil remain unknown and no published study has shown how a tsunami affects the risk of infection by Clostridium perfringens living in soil. In 2011 and 2015, C. perfringens was assessed in deposits in soil from tsunami‐damaged areas and undamaged areas of Miyagi. It was found that the number of C. perfringens was overwhelmingly greater in 2011 than in 2015 in the tsunami‐damaged areas. According to real‐time PCR, the prevalence C. perfringens organisms (%) was 103 fold greater in the damaged than in the undamaged areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Aims: PCR‐Invader is a highly sensitive assay for detecting non‐structural protein 5A (NS5A) resistance‐associated variants (RAVs) of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Here, we validated the accuracy of the semiquantitative PCR‐Invader (SQ‐PI) assay compared to direct sequencing (DS) for identifying NS5A RAVs, and we evaluated the treatment efficacy of daclatasvir plus asunaprevir (DCV + ASV) for patients judged to be non‐positive for NS5A RAVs by SQ‐PI. Methods: Detection rates of NS5A RAVs by SQ‐PI and DS were compared for 204 patients with HCV genotype 1b. Patients with non‐positive results for NS5A RAVs by SQ‐PI were treated by DCV + ASV, and the efficacy of this treatment was examined. Results: All samples judged as negative for NS5A RAVs by SQ‐PI were similarly judged by DS. However, 29.7% of samples judged as negative for Y93H by DS were judged as weakly positive or positive by SQ‐PI. Among 108 patients who were judged as negative by SQ‐PI and treated by DCV + ASV, rates of sustained virologic response at 24 weeks (SVR24) were 96.3% in intention‐to‐treat analysis and 99.0% in patients who completed treatment. Among patients who were weakly positive for Y93H on SQ‐PI, the SVR24 rate was 95.0% (19/20). This rate was 100% (78/78) in patients who were negative for Y93H on SQ‐PI and completed treatment. Conclusion: Treatment efficacy of DCV + ASV was extremely high among patients who were non‐positive for NS5A RAVs on SQ‐PI, especially for patients with negative results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
