Strength properties of paper are of great significance in terms of its mechanical performance and are attributed to cellulosic fibers. When filler is used in papermaking, the cost and strength properties get reduced but optical properties are improved. So far, modification of fillers using chitosan (CH) is not explored in such a way that all aspects of wet-end of papermaking get covered. The novelty lies in showing the effect of CH as filler modifier at various doses on different fillers and the wet-end application of modified fillers at different doses along with other additives used in papermaking. The impact of addition of modified fillers on end paper properties is also analyzed. Here, CH was applied to modify fillers characteristics so that the ash in paper can be increased without compromising the strength properties. Three different doses (0.25%, 0.50% and 1.00%) of CH were added to the fillers. The addition of modified fillers to bleached mixed hardwood (BMHW) pulp increased the filler retention in paper while the reduction in strength properties was found to be less and in some properties even an increase was observed. The particle size distributions of fillers were found to be affected after modification of fillers.

The coronavirus infection presents primarily as a respiratory illness, however, extra-pulmonary manifestations are known to occur, including gastrointestinal manifestations. Hereby, we report three cases of the COVID-19 infection who presented with acute-onset abdominal pain during illness. All three patients had respiratory symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 and abdominal symptoms consistent with acute pancreatitis, acute cholecystitis, and acute appendicitis. All three patients improved in terms of acute abdominal pain; however, the overall clinical course, the three illnesses were variable because of differences in underlying organ involment and pathophysiology.

More than a half-century has passed since it was discovered that phytohormone cytokinin (CK) is essential to drive cytokinesis and proliferation in plant tissue culture. Thereafter, cytokinin has emerged as the primary regulator of the plant cell cycle and numerous developmental processes. Lately, a growing body of evidence suggests that cytokinin has a role in mitigating both abiotic and biotic stress. Cytokinin is essential to defend plants against excessive light exposure and a unique kind of abiotic stress generated by an altered photoperiod. Secondly, cytokinin also exhibits multi-stress resilience under changing environments. Furthermore, cytokinin homeostasis is also affected by several forms of stress. Therefore, the diverse roles of cytokinin in reaction to stress, as well as its interactions with other hormones, are discussed in detail. When it comes to agriculture, understanding the functioning processes of cytokinins under changing environmental conditions can assist in utilizing the phytohormone, to increase productivity. Through this review, we briefly describe the biological role of cytokinin in enhancing the performance of plants growth under abiotic challenges as well as the probable mechanisms underpinning cytokinin-induced stress tolerance. In addition, the article lays forth a strategy for using biotechnological tools to modify genes in the cytokinin pathway to engineer abiotic stress tolerance in plants. The information presented here will assist in better understanding the function of cytokinin in plants and their effective investigation in the cropping system.

Over the last decade, remarkable progress has been made in our understanding the phytohormones, cytokinin’s (CKs) biosynthesis, perception, and signalling pathways. Additionally, it became apparent that interfering with any of these steps has a significant effect on all stages of plant growth and development. As a result of their complex regulatory and cross-talk interactions with other hormones and signalling networks, they influence and control a wide range of biological activities, from cellular to organismal levels. In agriculture, CKs are extensively used for yield improvement and management because of their wide-ranging effects on plant growth, development and physiology. One of the primary targets in this regard is cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKO/CKX), which is encoded by CKX gene, which catalyses the irreversible degradation of cytokinin. The previous studies on various agronomically important crops indicated that plant breeders have targeted CKX directly. In recent years, prokaryotic clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) system has been increasingly used in editing the CKO/CKX gene and phenomenal results have been achieved. This review provides an updated information on the applications of CRISPR-based gene-editing tools in manipulating cytokinin metabolism at the genetic level for yield improvement. Furthermore, we summarized the current developments of RNP-mediated DNA/transgene-free genomic editing of plants which would broaden the application of this technology. The current review will advance our understanding of cytokinins and their role in sustainably increase crop production through CRISPR/Cas genome editing tool.

Metastasis or the progression of malignancy poses a major challenge in cancer therapy and is the principal reason for increased mortality. The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of the basement membrane (BM) allows cells of epithelial phenotype to transform into a mesenchymal-like (quasi-mesenchymal) phenotype and metastasize via the lymphovascular system through a metastatic cascade by intravasation and extravasation. This helps in the progression of carcinoma from the primary site to distant organs. Collagen, laminin, and integrin are the prime components of BM and help in tumor cell metastasis, which makes them ideal cancer drug targets. Further, recent studies have shown that collagen, laminin, and integrin can be used as a biomarker for metastatic cells. In this review, we have summarized the current knowledge of such therapeutics, which are either currently in preclinical or clinical stages and could be promising cancer therapeutics. The importance of recycling and utilization of recycled fiber has recently been recognized because of concerns about environmental issues and economic aspects. In spite of several advantages offered by paper recycling such as wood savings through substitution of virgin pulp and reduction in chemical usage, recycled pulp also contains plenty of fines having high relative surface area and high amount of amorphous cellulose. These fines adsorb water to a large extent and dewatering rate is lower compared to virgin pulp. Selective hydrolysis of these excess ultra-fines through eco-friendly cellulase enzymes can be utilized for enhancing the drainage rate leading to increased paper production. The present study deals with the isolation, production, biochemical characterization of alkali stable endoglucanase enzyme from Pycnoporus sanguineus NFCCI-3628 and its potential application for the improvement of pulp drainage. The enzyme produced by the fungus was stable even in neutral to alkaline pH range 7-8. In the experiments carried out, significant improvement of ~9-14% in drain ability of pulp treated with endoglucanase enzyme was achieved along with better paper properties such as tensile index & smoothness.

The understanding of the dispersion chemistry of papermaking grade fillers is as important as their effect on paper. Magnesium silicate (talc) is one of the major fillers used for papermaking. It is hydrophobic and chemically inert. The dispersion chemistry of talc of different particle sizes was studied with wetting agent (non-ionic triblock copolymer) and anionic dispersant (sodium salt of polyacrylic acid). Both wetting agent and dispersant were added in talc slurry separately and in combination. The dispersion behavior was studied through measuring the Brookfield viscosity. The wetted and dispersed talc was also added to paper to understand its effect on papermaking process and paper properties. Wetting and dispersion changed the colloidal charge chemistry of talc making it more anionic which reduced the talc retention in paper. Lowering the particle size of talc significantly improved the light scattering coefficient (LSC) of paper and decreased its retention. Controlling colloidal charge of papermaking suspension with cationic polyacrylamide polymer helped in protecting the retention of talc without affecting the LSC of both filler and paper.

The utilization of post-consumer papers in the production of new paper products is increasing all over the world in recent years. Recycling of photocopier paper is a major problem due to difficulty in removal of non-impact ink. Enzymes offer potential advantages in ecofriendly deinking of recovered paper. In this study the deinking of photocopier paper was examined using chemicals and a commercial cellulase enzyme. Parameters of deinking experiments were optimized for hydrapulping. The ink was removed by flotation and washing processes. Then these parameters were compared in terms of ink removal ability of the process, as well as optical and strength properties of the deinked paper. The application of enzymatic deinking improved ink removal efficiency by 24.6% and freeness by 21.6% with a reduction in drainage time of 11.5% in comparison to those obtained with chemical deinking. The physical properties, namely burst index and tensile index, were observed to improve by 15.3% and 2.7%, respectively and brightness and tear index decreased by 2.1% and 21.9%, respectively. Results of deinking efficiency of photocopier paper showed that the enzyme used in the present work performed better than the conventional chemicals used for deinking.

The pulp bleaching process is mainly responsible for the generation of toxic substances in the whole paper making process. The modification of conventional ECF (elemental chlorine free) bleaching was studied using an oxygen stage, a peracetic acid stage and an oxygen followed by peracetic acid stage in the following bleaching sequences: OD0EOPD, PaaD0EOPD, OPaaD0EOPD and QOPaaD0EOPD. The PaaD0EOPD sequence reduced the COD, BOD, color, TDS and AOX by 36.8, 37.0, 52.4, 39.8 and 53.9%, respectively, in comparison with D0EOPD. Moreover, PaaD0EOPD has better optical effluent properties, compared to the OD0EOPD sequence. OPaaD0EOPD reduced the chlorophenols, chloroguaiacols by 73.3 and 89.3%, and improved the brightness and whiteness by 1.7 and 3.1 units, respectively, in comparison with the D0EOPD bleaching sequence. The QOPaaD0EOPD sequence improved the pulp viscosity by 0.8 units in comparison with OPaaD0EOPD. The amendment of the conventional bleaching sequence was found to be effective for achieving an improvement in optical properties and effluent quality at reduced dose of chlorine dioxide.
