1. Pion-nucleon sigma term $\sigma_{\pi N}$ and deeply bound pionic atoms

Abstract

We investigate the possibility to determine the value of the pion-nucleon sigma term $\sigma_{\pi N}$ precisely by the experimental observables of the deeply bound pionic atoms. We discuss the sensitivity of the observables to $\sigma_{\pi N}$ and take into account the typical errors of the up-to-date experiments of the deeply bound pionic atoms. We find that the gap of the binding energies and the width of the deeply bound pionic states are good observables for the $\sigma_{\pi N}$ value determination by the experimental data. We also discuss the expected difficulties for the accurate determination of the value of $\sigma_{\pi N}$ due to the correlation between the $\sigma$ term and the potential parameter in the pion-nucleus optical potential., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, v2: title changed, discussions on parameter correlations added, updates of some numerical results and figures

Abstract

Modern theories of physics tell that the vacuum is not an empty space. Hidden in the vacuum is a structure of anti-quarks $\bar{q}$ and quarks $q$. The $\bar{q}$ and $q$ pair has the same quantum number as the vacuum and condensates in it since the strong interaction of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is too strong to leave it empty. The $\bar{q}q$ condensation breaks the chiral symmetry of the vacuum. The expectation value $<\bar{q}q>$ is an order parameter. For higher temperature or higher matter-density, $|<\bar{q}q>|$ decreases reflecting the restoration of the symmetry. In contrast to these clear-cut arguments, experimental evidence is so far limited. First of all, the $\bar{q}q$ is nothing but the vacuum itself. It is neither visible nor perceptible. In this article, we unravel this invisible existence by high precision measurement of pionic atoms, $\pi^-$-meson-nucleus bound systems. Using the $\pi^-$ as a probe, we demonstrate that $|<\bar{q}q>|$ is reduced in the nucleus at 58% of the normal nuclear density by a factor of 77 $\pm$ 2% compared with that in the vacuum. This reduction indicates that the chiral symmetry is partially restored due to the extremely high density of the nucleus. The present experimental result clearly exhibits the existence of the hidden structure, the chiral condensate, in the vacuum.

Abstract

Tetraneutron ($^4n$) has come back in the limelight, because of recent observation of a candidate resonant state at RIBF. We propose to investigate the pion double charge exchange (DCX) reaction, i.e. $^4\mathrm{He}({\pi}^- , {\pi}^+)$, as an alternative way to populate tetraneutron. Abstract

We are going to perform an inclusive spectroscopy experiment of eta' mesic nuclei with the 12C(p,d) reaction to study in-medium properties of the eta' meson. In nuclear medium, the eta' meson mass may be reduced due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. In case of sufficiently large mass reduction and small absorption width of eta' at normal nuclear density, peak structures of eta' mesic states in 11C will be observed near the eta' emission threshold even in an inclusive spectrum. The experiment will be carried out at GSI with proton beam supplied by SIS using FRS as a spectrometer. Abstract

Abstract

A novel method is proposed to measure eta'(958) meson bound states in 11C nuclei by missing mass spectroscopy of the 12C(p,d) reaction near the eta' production threshold. It is shown that peak structures will be observed experimentally in an inclusive measurement in case that the in-medium eta' mass reduction is sufficiently large and that the decay width of eta' mesic states is narrow enough. Such a measurement will be feasible with the intense proton beam supplied by the SIS synchrotron at GSI combined with the good energy resolution of the fragment separator FRS., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Progress of Theoretical Physics

Abstract

A new superconducting booster linac, so-called SRILAC, has been constructed at the RIKEN Nishina Center to upgrade the acceleration voltage of the existing linac in order to enable further investigation of new super-heavy elements and the production of useful RIs. The SRILAC consists of 10 TEM quarter-wavelength resonators made from pure niobium sheets which operate at 4.5 K. We succeeded to develop high performance SC-cavities which satisfies the required Q₀ of 1E+9 with a wide margin. Installation of the cryomodule and He refrigerator system was completed by the end of FY2018, and the first cooling test was performed in September 2019. After various tests of the RF system, the beam acceleration was successfully commissioned in January 2020. In June 2020, the beam supply to the experiment was started. Abstract

At RIKEN Nishina Center, the SRILAC project has been launched for the search experiments of super-heavy-elements with atomic numbers of 119 and higher. The main points of the SRILAC project are as follows. Superconducting RIKEN Linear Accelerator (SRILAC) was newly installed at downstream of existing accelerator (RIKEN Linear Accelerator: RILAC) to enhance beam energy. Additionally, a new RIKEN 28-GHz superconducting electron cyclotron resonance ion source has been implemented at the frontend of SRILAC to increase beam intensity. With that, the SRILAC control system requires corrections and upgrades to the shortcomings of previous RILAC control system, for example control methods for electromagnet power supplies, an machine protection system and an archive system. Moreover, there was also a issue to be solved for methods of integration with small LabVIEW-based systems. To operate efficiently in the SRILAC project, a distributed control system utilizing EPICS should be adopted as in RIBF, a higher-level application protocol needs to be integrated to EPICS Channel Access protocol. Abstract

The performance of RIKEN heavy-ion linac (RILAC) has been upgraded with a new ECR ion source and superconducting linac booster (SRILAC). It is expected to play a major role in the synthesis of super-heavy elements (SHE), development of the technologies for production of medical radioisotopes, and as a powerful injector to RI Beam Factory. In this talk, I will report on the beam delivery for the SHE experiment that started in June 2020, especially on how to adjust the optics based on the measured beam emittance. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Successful restoration of epicardial coronary artery patency by primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) does not always lead to adequate reperfusion at the microvascular level. AIMS: This study sought to investigate the association between lipid-rich coronary plaque identified by near-infrared spectroscopy combined with intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) and microvascular obstruction (MVO) detected by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after PPCI for STEMI. METHODS: We investigated 120 patients with STEMI undergoing PPCI. NIRS-IVUS was used to measure the maximum lipid core burden index in 4 mm (maxLCBI4 mm) in the infarct-related lesions before PPCI. Delayed contrast-enhanced cardiac MRI was performed to evaluate MVO one week after PPCI. RESULTS: MVO was identified in 40 (33%) patients. MaxLCBI4 mm in the infarct-related lesion was significantly larger in the MVO group compared with the no-MVO group (median [interquartile range]: 745 [522-853] vs 515 [349-698], p600 was the optimal cut-off value to predict MVO (Youden index=0.44 and area under the curve=0.71) with a sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 69%. CONCLUSIONS: Lipid content measured by NIRS in the infarct-related lesions was associated with the occurrence of MVO after PPCI in STEMI.

Abstract

We investigate the possibility of determining the value of the pion–nucleon sigma term σπ N precisely by the experimental observables of deeply bound pionic atoms. We discuss the sensitivity of the observables to σπ N and take into account the typical errors of up-to-date experiments on deeply bound pionic atoms. We find that the gap in the binding energies and the width of the deeply bound pionic states are good observables for σπ N value determination with experimental data. We also discuss the expected difficulties for the accurate determination of the value of σπ N due to the correlation between the σ term and the potential parameter in the pion–nucleus optical potential. Abstract

We performed a missing-mass spectroscopy experiment of the 12C(p, d) reaction at 2.5 GeV proton energy in order to search for η′ mesic nuclei. An excitation-energy spectrum of 11C was obtained around the η′ production threshold. As no significant peak structure was observed in the spectrum, upper limits of the formation cross section of η′ mesic nuclei have been determined. Preliminary results of the experiment as well as future prospects are given.

Abstract

We conduct an experimental project to make spectroscopy of deeply bound pionic atoms systematically over wide range of nuclei. We aim at studying the strong interaction in the low energy region, which has close connection to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and its partial restoration in nuclear matter. First experimental results show improved spectral resolution and much better statistical sensitivity than previous experiments. Present status of the experiment is reported.

Abstract

The beam commissioning for the RIKEN Heavy-ion Linac (RILAC) upgrade, including the new Superconducting Linac (SRILAC) has been successfully completed. These RILAC upgrade aims at promoting super-heavy element searches and the radioactive isotope (RI) production for medical use. When we accelerate the beam by the SRILAC, we must definitely reduce the beam loss under 1 W/m. To constantly monitor the beam nondestructively, we have developed the new system (BEPM) measuring simultaneously not only the beam position but also the beam energy by measuring the time of flight of the beam. This system has the great advantage that can handle time-chopped beam by synchronizing the measurement system with the beam-chopping signal. At the beginning of the commissioning, the beam was chopped to 3% duty to make the SRILAC cavity protected from the beam loss. Even though the beam intensity was 15 enA, the beam position and energy were accurately measured. We measure the beam position to an accuracy of ±0.1 mm and the beam energy to that of several 10⁻⁴. Abstract

We plan a missing-mass spectroscopy experiment of η′ mesic nuclei with the 12C(p,d)η′⊗11C reaction to study in-medium properties of the η′ meson. In nuclear medium, due to restoration of chiral symmetry, the mass of the η′ meson may be reduced, and η′ bound states in a nucleus may exist. The experiment will be started at GSI with a 2.5 GeV proton beam using FRS as a spectrometer and will be continued at Super-FRS at FAIR. The plan of the experiment and development of a Cherenkov detector and an optics mode are described.

Abstract

We performed a precision missing-mass spectroscopy experiment of the deeply bound pionic states in a 121Sn atom using the (d,3He) reaction near the π− emission threshold. The experiment serves as a pilot experiment for our new ‘pionic atom factory project’ at RIBF, which aims at precision spectroscopy of the energy spectrum of the pionic atom of isotopes and isotones. The result of the pilot experiment demonstrated the potentiality of BigRIPS and of the RIBF facilities for the project. The current status of the analysis is reported.

Abstract

We have performed an inclusive spectroscopy of 122Sn(d, 3He) reaction near the pion emission threshold at an incident energy of Td = 250 MeV/nucleon. The first experiment aims as devloping the high precision spectroscopy of pionic atoms at the RI beam factory (RIBF) of RIKEN, which leads to a new project, pionic Atom Factory project (piAF) to measure pionic atoms for a wide range of elements. We report the analysis status of the pilot experiment.

Abstract

The η′ meson mass may be reduced due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. If this is the case, an η′-nucleus system may form a nuclear bound state.We plan to carry out a missing-mass spectroscopy experiment with the 12C(p,d) reaction at GSI-SIS. Peak structures corresponding to such a bound state may be observed even in an inclusive measurement, if the decay width is narrow enough.
