Abstract To address the rising demand for high-speed wireless data links, communication systems operating at frequencies beyond $${100}\,\hbox {GHz}$$ 100 GHz are being targeted. A key enabling technology in the development of these wireless systems is the phased antenna array. Yet, the design and implementation of such steerable antenna arrays at frequencies over $${100}\,\hbox {GHz}$$ 100 GHz comes with a multitude of challenges. In particular, the cointegration of active electronics at each antenna element poses a major hurdle due to the inherent space constraints in the array. This article proposes a novel scalable concept for opto-electronic phased antenna arrays operating at 140 GHz. It details the system architecture of a transmitter that enables the implementation of large scale, wideband, 2D steerable phased antenna arrays and presents the design and measurement of a compact SiGe power amplifier (PA) chip to be used as one of its key building blocks. The amplifier achieves a gain of 20 dB at 135 GHz, features a $$P_{1dB}$$ P 1 d B of 14.6 dBm and can support data rates up to 45 Gbps in a limited footprint of only 540μm × 550μm. This makes it one of the fastest, most powerful D-band power amplifiers in literature with a footprint compatible with $$\frac{\lambda }{2}$$ λ 2 -spaced phased array integration.

This work accounts for the green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles using Moringa oleifera leaf extract as a stabilizing and reducing agent. The preliminary confirmation of synthesized Fe3O4NPs was done by UV–visible spectroscopy in the wavelength range of 190–900 nm. The crystalline nature of Fe3O4 NPs was established via X-ray diffraction analysis. FT-IR studies reveal the bioactive phytochemicals present in the Moringa leaf extract based Fe3O4 NPs. A DLS particle size analyser was used to determine the size of green synthesized Fe3O4 NPs and its spherical morphology was determined by using SEM and TEM techniques. The growth of Brassica oleracea var. italica seedlings was measured by analysing biophysical and biochemical parameters in two concentrations of Fe3O4 NPs i.e. 15 mg/L and 30 mg/L alone and in combination with cadmium. Treatments were designated as control C, NP1, NP2, Cd+NP1, Cd+NP2, and Cd. Fe3O4 NPs treated broccoli seedlings showed noteworthy improvement in shoot length, root length, plant biomass, total chlorophyll content, carotenoid content, total soluble sugars, protein content, and nitrate reductase activity, while decline in electrolyte leakage, lipid peroxidation, proline content, superoxide dismutase activity and catalase activity was reported as compared to control. Exposure of iron oxide nano-treatments was found efficacious in reducing cadmium accumulation at a concentration of 30 mg/L. The seedlings exposed to NP2 (30 mg/L) concentration of green synthesized nano iron oxide increased nutrient uptake and thus stimulating plant growth, and also improved morphological and physiological characteristics of Brassica oleracea seedlings. Therefore, the present study reported that bio-based iron oxide nanoparticles were significantly useful for plant growth, by enhancing the plant defense mechanism in response to cadmium induced toxicity.

Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) is a promising material for high-power semiconductor applications due to its wide band gap and high breakdown voltage. However, the current methods for fabricating Ga2O3 nanostructures have several disadvantages, including their complex manufacturing processes and high costs. In this study, we report a novel approach for synthesizing β-Ga2O3 nanostructures on gallium phosphide (GaP) using ultra-short laser pulses for in situ nanostructure generation (ULPING). We varied the process parameters to optimize the nanostructure formation, finding that the ULPING method produces high-quality β-Ga2O3 nanostructures with a simpler and more cost-effective process when compared with existing methods. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used to characterize the samples, which indicated the presence of phosphorous. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the formation of gallium oxide, along with a minor amount of phosphorus-containing compounds. Structural analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the formation of a monoclinic β-polymorph of Ga2O3. We also measured the band gap of the materials using reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy (REELS), and found that the band gap increased with higher nanostructure formation, reaching 6.2 eV for the optimized sample. Furthermore, we observed a change in the heterojunction alignment, which we attribute to the change in the oxidation of the samples. Our results demonstrate the potential of ULPING as a novel, simple, and cost-effective method for fabricating Ga2O3 nanostructures with tunable optical properties. The ULPING method offers a green alternative to existing fabrication methods, making it a promising technology for future research in the field of Ga2O3 nanostructure fabrication.

There have been sustained efforts toward using naturalistic methods in developmental science to measure infant behaviors in the real world from an egocentric perspective because statistical regularities in the environment can shape and be shaped by the developing infant. However, there is no user-friendly and unobtrusive technology to densely and reliably sample life in the wild. To address this gap, we present the design, implementation and validation of the EgoActive platform, which addresses limitations of existing wearable technologies for developmental research. EgoActive records the active infants’ egocentric perspective of the world via a miniature wireless head-mounted camera concurrently with their physiological responses to this input via a lightweight, wireless ECG/acceleration sensor. We also provide software tools to facilitate data analyses. Our validation studies showed that the cameras and body sensors performed well. Families also reported that the platform was comfortable, easy to use and operate, and did not interfere with daily activities. The synchronized multimodal data from the EgoActive platform can help tease apart complex processes that are important for child development to further our understanding of areas ranging from executive function to emotion processing and social learning.

Abstract To quantify the urinary bladder wall T1 relaxation time (T1) before and after the instillation contrast mixture in rats previously subjected to water avoidance stress (WAS) and/or acute exposure to protamine sulfate (PS). Female Wistar rats were randomized to receive either sham (control) or 1 h of WAS for ten consecutive days before the evaluation of nocturnal urination pattern in metabolic cages. T1 mapping of urinary bladder wall at 9.4 T was performed pre- and post- instillation of 4 mM Gadobutrol in a mixture with 5 mM Ferumoxytol. Subsequently, either T1 mapping was repeated after brief intravesical PS exposure or the animals were sacrificed for histology and analyzing the mucosal levels of mRNA. Compared to the control group, WAS exposure decreased the single void urine volume and shortened the post-contrast T1 relaxation time of mucosa- used to compute relatively higher ingress of instilled Gadobutrol. Compromised permeability in WAS group was corroborated by the urothelial denudation, edema and ZO-1 downregulation. PS exposure doubled the baseline ingress of Gadobutrol in both groups. These findings confirm that psychological stress compromises the paracellular permeability of bladder mucosa and its non-invasive assay with MRI was validated by PS exposure.

Singh and colleagues report that the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contributes to short-term plasticity (STP). Using modelling approaches they reveal that ER’s buffering capacities are crucial in this process.

Silicon is one of the most used semiconductor materials around the world. This research was conducted on silicon to improve its opto-electrical properties including bandgap and optical conductivity using direct ultrafast pulsed nanostructure formation (DUPNF). The power and frequency of high-intensity picosecond laser pulses were varied, and nanostructures were formed. The optical properties were examined using optical spectroscopy in both VIS and NIR. The structural characteristics were examined using EDX and SEM imaging. It was found that varying the power and frequency of the laser processing caused a change in the bandgap, as well as the structural characteristics of the silicon semiconductor. Increasing the frequency and power showed the formation of nanostructures of silicon and their variation in the properties of the formed nanostructures. The critical breakdown field of the silicon nanostructures was higher than the bulk silicon.

The world is grappling with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the causative agent of which is severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 symptoms are similar to the common cold, including fever, sore throat, cough, muscle and chest pain, brain fog, dyspnoea, anosmia, ageusia, and headache. The manifestation of the disease can vary from being asymptomatic to severe life-threatening conditions warranting hospitalization and ventilation support. Furthermore, the emergence of mutecated variants of concern (VOCs) is paramount to the devastating effect of the pandemic. This highly contagious virus and its emergent variants challenge the available advanced viral diagnostic methods for high-accuracy testing with faster result yields. This review is to shed light on the natural history, pathology, molecular biology, and efficient diagnostic methods of COVID-19, detecting SARS-CoV-2 in collected samples. We reviewed the gold standard RT-qPCR method for COVID-19 diagnosis to confer a better understanding and application to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. This comprehensive review may further develop awareness about the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gallium oxide, as an emerging semiconductor, has attracted a lot of attention among researchers due to its high band gap (4.8 eV) and a high critical field with the value of 8 MV/cm. This paper presents a review on different chemical and physical techniques for synthesis of nanostructured β-gallium oxide, as well as its properties and applications. The polymorphs of Ga2O3 are highlighted and discussed along with their transformation state to β-Ga2O3. Different processes of synthesis of thin films, nanostructures and bulk gallium oxide are reviewed. The electrical and optical properties of β-gallium oxide are also highlighted, based on the synthesis methods, and the techniques for tuning its optical and electrical properties compared. Based on this information, the current, and the possible future, applications for β-Ga2O3 nanostructures are discussed.

Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the biggest threat to human being globally. The first case was identified in a patient with flu symptoms along with severe acute respiratory syndrome in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and now it has spread in more than 200 countries. COVID-19 is more lethal in the elderly and people with an underlying condition such as asthma, cancer, diabetes. Here we performed bioinformatic analysis to investigate the interaction of S2 subunit protein of SARS-nCoV-2 of novel coronavirus with tumor suppressor proteins p53 and BRCA-1/2. In this short communication we report the interaction between S2 subunit proteins with tumor suppressor proteins for the first time. This preliminary result will open up a new direction to investigate the effect of a novel coronavirus in cancer patients.

Introduction: Alcohol abuse among medical students has important implication. This study was conducted to determine prevalence of alcohol abuse in undergraduates of medical students and to determine the characteristics of alcohol drinking behaviour and to assess the effect on their academic performance. Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted on undergraduate MBBS students of UPUMS, using a self administered questionnaire. A total of 250 students of MBBS 2nd and 3rd year students were included in the study using purposive sampling, during November & December 2019. Data entry and data analysis were done using SPSS version 23. Results: The proportion of alcohol consumption in males were 48% and 6.7% in females and the most common reason for initiation of drinking alcohol was curiosity (43.6%). The association between gender and alcohol intake and also the association between binge drinking and drink and drive were found significant. Conclusion: This Study shows the high risk taking behaviour that are taken after drinking, that need to be curtailed by health education and motivation.

The rice husk is an agricultural waste which is obtained from milling process of paddy and approximately 22% of the weight of paddy is rice husk. The waste is used as fuel in producing stream in parboiling process. The 25 % the weight of husk is converted into ash which is known as rice husk ash (RHA) and is again a waste which is disposed. This ash consists of amorphous silica which can be used as pozzolana in making concrete and cement instead of disposing it without compromising on the properties of cement or concrete if replaced in specific proportion with other constituents of cement or concrete. In this study the ordinary Portland cement is replaced in different proportion with RHA to obtain concrete with comparable and satisfactory strength and properties to that of normal concrete. The proportions of replacement chosen are at 2.5% interval starting from 5 % to 15 % and the casted concrete were tested under compression at different ages and results obtained are compared with normal concrete of same grade and it is concluded that the results are comparable.

Skin offers protection against external insults, with the skin microbiota playing a crucial defensive role against pathogens that gain access when the skin barrier is breached. Linkages between skin microbes, biofilms and disease have not been well established although single-species biofilm formation by skin microbiota in vitro has been extensively studied. Consequently, the purpose of this work was to optimize and validate a simple polymicrobial biofilm keratinocyte model for investigating commensal, pathogen and keratinocyte interactions and for evaluating therapeutic agents or health promoting interventions. The model incorporates the commensals (Staphylococcus epidermidis and Micrococcus luteus) and pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) which form robust polymicrobial biofilms on immortalized keratinocytes (HaCat cells). We observed that the commensals reduce the damage caused to the keratinocyte monolayer by either pathogen. When the commensals were combined with P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, much thinner biofilms were observed than those formed by the pathogens alone. When P. aeruginosa was inoculated with S. epidermidis in the presence or absence of M. luteus, the commensals formed a layer between the keratinocytes and pathogen. Although S. aureus completely inhibited the growth of M. luteus in dual-species biofilms, inclusion of S. epidermidis in triple or quadruple species biofilms, enabled M. luteus to retain viability. Using this polymicrobial biofilm keratinocyte model, we demonstrate that a quorum sensing (QS) deficient S. aureus agr mutant, in contrast to the parent, failed to damage the keratinocyte monolayer unless supplied with the exogenous cognate autoinducing peptide. In addition, we show that treatment of the polymicrobial keratinocyte model with nanoparticles containing an inhibitor of the PQS QS system reduced biofilm thickness and P. aeruginosa localization in mono- and polymicrobial biofilms.

Ubiquilin (UBQLN) proteins are adaptors thought to link ubiquitinated proteins to the proteasome. However, our lab has recently reported a previously unappreciated role for loss of UBQLN in lung cancer progression. In fact, UBQLN genes are lost in over 50% of lung cancer samples examined. However, a reason for the loss of UBQLN has not been proposed, nor has a selective pressure that could lead to deletion of UBQLN been reported. Diesel Exhaust Particles (DEP) are a major concern in the large cities of developing nations and DEP exposed populations are at an increased risk of developing a number of illnesses, including lung cancer. A connection between DEP and UBQLN has never been examined. In the present study, we determined the effect of DEP on lung cell lines and were interested to determine if UBQLN proteins could potentially play a protective role following treatment with DEP. Interestingly, we found that DEP treated cells have increased expression of UBQLN proteins. In fact, over-expression of UBQLN was capable of protecting cells from DEP toxicity. To investigate the mechanism by which DEP leads to increased UBQLN protein levels, we identified and interrogated microRNAs that were predicted to regulate UBQLN mRNA. We found that DEP decreases the oncogenic microRNA, MIR155. Further, we showed that MIR155 regulates the mRNA of UBQLN1 and UBQLN2 in cells, such that increased MIR155 expression increased cell invasion, migration, wound formation and clonogenicity in UBQLN-loss dependent manner. This is the first report of an environmental carcinogen regulating expression of UBQLN proteins. We show that exposure of cells to DEP causes an increase in UBQLN levels and that MIR155 regulates mRNA of UBQLN. Thus, we propose that DEP-induced repression of MIR155 leads to increased UBQLN levels, which in turn may be a selective pressure on lung cells to lose UBQLN1.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Our goal is to employ a structure-guided design approach to engineering a safer and more effective variant of the TIL1383I T cell receptor (TCR) currently under study in clinical trials for malignant melanoma METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Using our unpublished structure of TIL1383I we are in process of designing a panel of TCR variants with the goal of identifying candidates that improve “focus” towards the tyrosinase antigen presented on the MHC class I molecule HLA-A2. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Structural analysis of TIL1383I revealed key residues, particularly beta-chain residues E97, G101, L102, responsible for engaging the tyrosinase peptide bound to HLA-A2. The crystal structure of TIL1383I in complex with tyrosinase-HLA-A2 also highlighted its uncharacteristic binding geometry and we therefore hypothesize that this binding orientation is associated with the observed CD8 co-receptor independence of TIL1383I. Indeed, functional analysis with TIL1383I-transduced CD8-positive and CD8-negative T cells, transduced T cells expressing a truncated CD8 lacking the intracellular LCK signaling domain, and tyrosinase peptide variants presented by HLA-A2 mutants outline this co-receptor independence. Combined with our interrogation of tyrosinase peptide cross-reactivity via a peptide positional scanning library approach, structure-guided design resulted in the identification of TIL1383I variants with improved binding affinities to the tyrosinase peptide as well as an understanding of structural characteristics that may contribute to TIL1383I’s co-receptor independence.

Internet security finds it difficult to keep the information secure and to maintain the integrity of the data. Sending messages over the internet secretly is one of the major tasks as it is widely used for passing the message. In order to achieve security there must be some mechanism to protect the data against unauthorized access. A lossless data hiding scheme is proposed in this paper which has a higher embedding capacity than other schemes. Unlike other schemes that are used for embedding fixed amount of data, the proposed data hiding method is block based approach and it uses a variable data embedding in different blocks which reduces the chances of distortion and increases the hiding capacity of the image. When the data is recovered the original image can be restored without any distortion. Our experimental results indicate that the proposed solution can significantly support the data hiding problem. We achieved good Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) while hiding large amount of data into smoother regions.

Nowadays, overseas commerce has increased drastically in many countries. Plenty fruits are imported from the other nations such as oranges, apples etc. Manual identification of defected fruit is very time consuming. This work presents a novel defect segmentation of fruits based on color features with K-means clustering unsupervised algorithm. We used color images of fruits for defect segmentation. Defect segmentation is carried out into two stages. At first, the pixels are clustered based on their color and spatial features, where the clustering process is accomplished. Then the clustered blocks are merged to a specific number of regions. Using this two step procedure, it is possible to increase the computational efficiency avoiding feature extraction for every pixel in the image of fruits. Although the color is not commonly used for defect segmentation, it produces a high discriminative power for different regions of image. This approach thus provides a feasible robust solution for defect segmentation of fruits. We have taken apple as a case study and evaluated the proposed approach using defected apples. The experimental results clarify the effectiveness of proposed approach to improve the defect segmentation quality in aspects of precision and computational time. The simulation results reveal that the proposed approach is promising.

Homologous recombination (HR) has not been demonstrated in the parasitic protists Entamoeba histolytica or Entamoeba invadens, as no convenient method is available to measure it. However, HR must exist to ensure genome integrity, and possible genetic exchange, especially during stage conversion from trophozoite to cyst. Here we show the up regulation of mitotic and meiotic HR genes in Entamoeba during serum starvation, and encystation. To directly demonstrate HR we use a simple PCR-based method involving inverted repeats, which gives a reliable read out, as the recombination junctions can be determined by sequencing the amplicons. Using this read out, we demonstrate enhanced HR under growth stress in E. histolytica, and during encystation in E. invadens. We also demonstrate recombination between chromosomal inverted repeats. This is the first experimental demonstration of HR in Entamoeba and will help future investigations into this process, and to explore the possibility of meiosis in Entamoeba.
