The Radiology Scholars Certificate Program (RSCP) is an extracurricular program created for preclinical medical students to address disparities in radiology education and exposure during medical school.The RSCP was designed as a year-long program for first- and second-year medical students. The 4 key components of the RSCP are: Exposure to radiology through shadowing, knowledge acquisition through self-paced case-based learning modules, knowledge application in interactive workshops, and completion of a scholarly project. Students are required to complete at least 3 hours of shadowing, attend at least 3 workshops, complete self-paced online modules, and complete a capstone project on a topic of their choosing. Pre- and post-program surveys were administered to assess trends in participants' perception of the field and imaging-related clinical knowledge.In the first year of the RSCP, 55% of the matriculating class enrolled and of those, 84% completed the program. Approximately half of participants were female. Participants demonstrated significant improvement in radiology knowledge, with average scores improving from 52.8% to 68.6% (p.001) on the knowledge-related survey questions. Significant improvements were also observed in student-reported confidence with ordering and interpreting imaging studies and in their perceptions of the field.The RSCP is an effective tool for addressing deficits in radiology education and exposure during medical school. It is designed to be run by senior medical students under radiology resident and attending supervision. With motivated student and radiologist investment, the RSCP should be easily replicable in medical training programs worldwide.

Background: Social media is an important tool for networking, recruitment, and promoting clinical practice. No study has specifically assessed which FPRS practitioners have professional social media accounts, how they utilize them, and what barriers or resources exist to their use. Objectives: This study aims to examine differences in social media use based on provider demographics and practice setting, and identify resources and barriers to professional social media use. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis was an anonymous survey sent to AAFPRS members. Data collected included demographics, practice setting, resources, and barriers encountered to use of professional social media. Results: Most facial plastic surgeons (80%) use professional social media, notably Instagram and Facebook, and mostly post patient photos and stories (67.9%). Social media is more commonly utilized in private practice (56% vs 23%, P = .0016), where there are less institutional barriers (10% vs 40%, P = .02) and more resources available (82.5% vs 12.5%, P = .01). Conclusions: Social media is widely used in FPRS. Working in private practice is associated with increased availability of resources for support, and a reduction in institutional barriers to maintaining a social media presence. With this understanding, facial plastic surgeons can be better equipped for networking, marketing, and promoting the field of FPRS.

The knee menisci are comprised of two orthogonal collagenous networks – circumferential and radial – that combine to enable efficient load bearing by the tissue in adults. Here, we assessed how the structural and functional characteristics of these networks developed over the course of skeletal maturation and determined the role of these fiber networks in defect tolerance with tissue injury. Imaging of the radial tie fiber (RTF) collagen structure in medial bovine menisci from fetal, juvenile, and adult specimens showed increasing heterogeneity, anisotropy, thickness, and density with skeletal development. Mechanical analysis showed that the tensile modulus in the radial direction did not change with skeletal development, though the resilience (in the radial direction) increased and the tolerance to defects in the circumferential direction decreased, in adult compared to fetal tissues. This loss of defect tolerance correlated with increased order in the RTF network in adult tissue. These data provide new insights into the role of the radial fiber network in meniscus function, will lead to improved clinical decision-making in the presence of a tear, and may improve engineering efforts to reproduce this critical load-bearing structure in the knee.

Injury to the meniscus is common, but few viable strategies exist for its repair or regeneration. To address this, animal models have been developed to translate new treatment strategies toward the clinic. However, there is not yet a regulatory document guiding such studies. The purpose of this study was to carry out a systematic review of the literature on meniscus treatment methods and outcomes to define the state of the field. Public databases were queried by using search terms related to animal models and meniscus injury and/or repair over the years 1980-2015. Identified peer-reviewed manuscripts were screened by using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. One of nine reviewers read each manuscript and scored them based on whether the publication described a series of predefined study descriptors and outcome measures. Additional data were extracted to identify common assays used. A total of 128 full-length peer-reviewed manuscripts were identified. The number of publications increased over the time frame analyzed, with 48% focused on augmented repair. Rabbit was, by far, the most prevalent species utilized (46%), with dog (21%) and sheep (20%) being the next most common. Analysis of study descriptors revealed that most studies appropriately documented details of the animal used, the surgical approach, and defect and implant characteristics (e.g., 63% of studies identified clearly the defect size). In terms of outcome parameters, most studies carried out macroscopic (85%), histologic (90%), and healing/integration (83%) analyses of the meniscus. However, many studies did not provide further analysis beyond these fundamental measures, and less than 40% reported on the adjacent cartilage and synovium, as well as joint function. There is intense interest in the field of meniscus repair. However, given the current lack of guidance documentation in this area, preclinical animal models are not performed in a standardized fashion. The development of a "Best Practices" document would increase reproducibility and external validity of experiments, while accelerating advancements in translational research. Advancement is of paramount importance given the high prevalence of meniscal injuries and the paucity of effective repair or regenerative strategies.

Objective To test different fixation methods of a 3-dimensionally woven poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffold within chondral defects of a weightbearing large animal model. Methods Full thickness chondral defects were made in the femoral condyles of 15 adult male Yucatan mini-pigs. Two surgical approaches were compared including total arthrotomy (traditional) and a retinaculum-sparing, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) approach. Following microfracture (MFX), scaffolds were placed without fixation or were fixed with fibrin glue, suture, or subchondral anchor. Experimental endpoints were between 1 and 6 weeks. Micro–computed tomography and histology were used to assess samples. Results The MIS approach was superior as the traditional approach caused medial condyle cartilage wear. One of 13 (7.7%) of scaffolds without fixation, 4 of 11 (36.3%) fibrin scaffolds, 1 of 4 (25%) of sutured scaffolds, and 9 of 9 (100%) of anchor-fixed scaffolds remained in place. Histology demonstrated tissue filling with some overgrowth of PCL scaffolds. Conclusions Of the methods tested, the MIS approach coupled with subchondral anchor fixation provided the best scaffold retention in a mini-pig chondral defect model. This finding has implications for fixation strategies in future animal studies and potential future human use.

Discussions surrounding the future of artificial intelligenc (AI) in healthcare often cause consternation among healthcare professionals. These feelings may stem from a lack of formal education on AI and how to be a leader of AI implementation in medical systems. To address this, our academic medical center hosted an educational summit exploring how to become a leader of AI in healthcare. This article presents three lessons learned from hosting this summit, thus providing guidance for developing medical curriculum on the topic of AI in healthcare.
