In Earth's low atmosphere, hurricanes are destructive due to their great size, strong spiral winds with shears, and intense rain/precipitation. However, disturbances resembling hurricanes have not been detected in Earth's upper atmosphere. Here, we report a long-lasting space hurricane in the polar ionosphere and magnetosphere during low solar and otherwise low geomagnetic activity. This hurricane shows strong circular horizontal plasma flow with shears, a nearly zero-flow center, and a coincident cyclone-shaped aurora caused by strong electron precipitation associated with intense upward magnetic field-aligned currents. Near the center, precipitating electrons were substantially accelerated to ~10 keV. The hurricane imparted large energy and momentum deposition into the ionosphere despite otherwise extremely quiet conditions. The observations and simulations reveal that the space hurricane is generated by steady high-latitude lobe magnetic reconnection and current continuity during a several hour period of northward interplanetary magnetic field and very low solar wind density and speed.

The availability of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and other substrates in soil determines the growth and metabolism of microorganisms and affects the activity of extracellular enzymes. To study the activities of β -1,4-glucosidase (BG) and β -1,4- N -acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) in response to C and N availability, samples that underwent four treatments-non-fertilization (CK), chemical fertilizer (NPK), combination of organic manure and chemical fertilizer (OM), and mixture of straw and chemical fertilizer (ST)-were collected from long-term fertilization paddy soil and incubated for 0, 4, 8, and 12 months to obtain soil with different C and N availability gradients. The results showed that the dissolved organic carbon(DOC) content of OM and ST treatment samples was 2-3 times higher than that of CK and NPK treatment samples. With the increase of DOC and ammonium (NH 4 + -N) contents, the activities of BG and NAG and the contents of microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN) showed no increase during incubation within each treatment. Fertilization treatments, incubation time, and their interaction are crucial factors varying the contents of DOC, NH 4 + -N, MBC, and MBN among different fertilization treatments ( P <0.01). There was a positive correlation between MBC/MBN and DOC/NH 4 + -N of OM treatment ( P <0.05) and a negative relationship between ln(BG)/ln(NAG) and DOC/NH 4 + -N of ST treatment ( P <0.01), indicating that the availability of substrates played a key role in the potential activity of extracellular enzymes in paddy soil, and the carbon-nitrogen ratio of microbial biomass was controlled by the C/N stoichiometry of substrates in soil. The results have a certain guiding significance for further study on the variation of extracellular enzyme activity in paddy soil, regulating the balance of carbon and nitrogen, and improving the fertility of paddy soil.

Objective To describe the trend of lung cancer mortality in Xuanwei City,Yunnan Province,from 1990 to 2016 and provide scientific evidence for the prevention and control of lung cancer in Xuanwei.Methods Mortality data from the 2nd(year 1990-1992)and 3rd(year 2004-2005)Retrospective Survey on Causes of Death,and the Routine Death Registration System(year 2011-2013 and 2014-2016)in Xuanwei were used in this study.We calibrated the missing report of the mortality data for the corresponding periods,calculated the crude mortality rates,standardized mortality rates and corresponding 95% CI of different types of lung cancers in the above four periods.Results The crude mortality rates of all lung cancers in Xuanwei for these four periods(1990-1992,2004-2005,2011-2013,and 2014-2016)were 34.0/100 000,89.8/100 000,102.3/100 000 and 87.2/100 000 respectively.The standardized morality rate of lung cancer remain high in Xuanwei although it has been decreasing since 2004.Morality rates of lung cancer for most age groups showed decreasing trends.The decrease has been statistically significant in the ≤ 40 year group since 2014.Except for Longchang,the standardized mortality rates have decreased in all other townships with high lung cancer prevalence.Conclusions Although the mortality rate of lung cancer remains high in Xuanwei,it has shown a decreasing trend since 2004.The decrease in lung cancer mortality in populations younger than 40 years is statistically significant.

Lateolabrax japonicus, an economically important species, is widely consumed in the offshore coasts of China, Korea, and Japan. We identified 10 new L. japonicus microsatellite markers, using a modified protocol of fast isolation by AFLP of sequences containing repeats. Thirty L. japonicus individuals were collected from Xiamen, China, to evaluate the degree of polymorphism. The number of identified alleles ranged from three to five. The polymorphism information content varied from 0.267 to 0.711, whereas the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.249 to 0.706 and 0.294 to 0.751, respectively. One of the 10 loci (L10) deviated from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These new microsatellite markers will provide a useful tool for the determination of population genetic structure and genetic diversity in L. japonicus.

Rabbitfish, Siganus fuscescens, is widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific regions and eastern Mediterranean. Its dwelling place includes reef flats, coral reef regions, and seagrass meadows in tropical area and reef areas or shallow waters in locations at high latitudes. In the present study, 10 new polymorphic microsatellite markers were screened from 30 wild S. fuscescens individuals, using a method of fast isolation protocol and amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeats. The number of polymorphic alleles per locus was 3 to 5 with a mean of 4.3, while the value of polymorphic information content ranged from 0.283 to 0.680. The values of the observed and expected heterozygosities were in the range 0.3333-0.8462 and 0.3011-0.7424, respectively. Deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was not observed in this study. These polymorphic loci are expected to be effective in evaluating the genetic diversity, population structure, and gene flow and in determining the paternity in S. fuscescens, as well as for conservation management., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Acanthopagrus schlegelii is a warm temperate demersal fish, which inhabits the sediment substrate or rocky reefs in shallow seas. As this fish is a nutritionally endowed species with good palatability, it is a highly valuable commercial species for aquaculture and has a long historical standing in Western Pacific countries. Because the population of this fish is currently declining in China, studies and measures aimed at addressing this decline are needed. In this study, eight microsatellite markers were screened from 30 wild A. schlegelii fishes through the FIASCO method, whereby sequences containing repeats were obtained from amplified fragment length polymorphisms. The allelic number ranged from 3 to 5, with a mean number of 3.625. The average observed heterozygosity was 0.6290, ranging from 0.3214 to 0.8966, while the expected heterozygosity was 0.5435, ranging from 0.3452 to 0.6721. The value for polymorphism information content ranged from 0.313 to 0.666. These results show this population has moderate genetic variation and low genetic diversity. These novel polymorphic loci will be useful for future genetic studies of A. schlegelii.

Fenneropenaeus penicillatus is one of the major economic shrimp species in China. In this study, 14 novel microsatellite loci were developed using the fast isolation protocol with amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeats (FIASCO). Polymorphisms were tested in 30 individuals from a single-wild population. The results showed that the number of alleles at each locus ranged from two to four, and the polymorphism information content varied from 0.314 to 0.692. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.3343 to 0.6542 and from 0.3458 to 0.6657, respectively. Three loci deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium after a Bonferroni correction was applied, while no deviations were detected in the other 11 loci. The new microsatellite loci identified in this study could be useful in future F. penicillatus population genetic, conservation research, population structure assessment, and linkage map construction studies.

Mercenaria mercenaria, also known as the hard clam, is widely distributed in the coastal waters of temperate and tropical areas in the Asian Pacific region. This species is widely popular in the international market, especially in the United States, Europe, and other Western countries, because of its high protein value, taste, and simple farming requirements. In this study, 17 novel microsatellite loci from the M. mercenaria genome were developed using the fast isolation by amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeats protocol. Thirty-two wild individuals were used to evaluate the degree of polymorphism of these markers. Results indicated that there were 11 polymorphic loci and six monomorphic loci, and the number of alleles per locus and the polymorphism information content ranged from two to six and from 0.059 to 0.498, respectively. The observed and expected heterozygosity varied from 0.0625 to 0.5333 and 0.0615 to 0.4977, respectively. The Y1-4 locus deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) after Bonferroni correction was applied, while the other loci were in HWE. These loci will provide useful information for M. mercenaria population genetic studies.

Oxygenous terpenoids are active components of many medicinal plants. However, current studies that have focused on enzymatic oxidation reactions cannot comprehensively clarify the mechanisms of oxygenous terpenoid synthesis and diversity. This study shows that an endophytic bacterium can trigger the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that directly increase oxygenous sesquiterpenoid content and diversity in Atractylodes lancea. A. lancea is a famous but endangered Chinese medicinal plant that contains abundant oxygenous sesquiterpenoids. Geo-authentic A. lancea produces a wider range and a greater abundance of oxygenous sesquiterpenoids than the cultivated herb. Our previous studies have shown the mechanisms behind endophytic promotion of the production of sesquiterpenoid hydrocarbon scaffolds; however, how endophytes promote the formation of oxygenous sesquiterpenoids and their diversity is unclear. After colonization by Pseudomonas fluorescens ALEB7B, oxidative burst and oxygenous sesquiterpenoid accumulation in A. lancea occur synchronously. Treatment with exogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or singlet oxygen induces oxidative burst and promotes oxygenous sesquiterpenoid accumulation in planta. Conversely, pretreatment of plantlets with the ROS scavenger ascorbic acid significantly inhibits the oxidative burst and oxygenous sesquiterpenoid accumulation induced by P. fluorescens ALEB7B. Further in vitro oxidation experiments show that several oxygenous sesquiterpenoids can be obtained from direct oxidation caused by H2O2 or singlet oxygen. In summary, this study demonstrates that endophytic bacterium-triggered ROS can directly oxidize oxygen-free sesquiterpenoids and increase the oxygenous sesquiterpenoid content and diversity in A. lancea, providing a novel explanation of the mechanisms of oxygenous terpenoid synthesis in planta and an essential complementarity to enzymatic oxidation reactions., (Copyright © 2016, American Society for Microbiology. Until recently, Fenneropenaeus penicillatus was considered a commercial shrimp species. However, in 2005, it was included on the Red List as an endangered species by the Chinese government. In this study, 19 new microsatellite markers in F. penicillatus were developed and tested in samples of 32 wild individuals from Nanao, China. Twelve loci were polymorphic and 7 were monomorphic. Of the 12 polymorphic loci, the number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 6, with an average of 4.42 alleles per locus. The polymorphism information content ranged from 0.302 to 0.670, with a mean of 0.4817. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.2250 to 0.8889 and from 0.1111 to 0.7750, respectively. Significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE, adjusted P < 0.0042) after a Bonferroni correction were observed in 3 loci (NA-9, NA-57, and NA-64), whereas the other 9 loci were in HWE. These new microsatellite markers will be useful in further research on the population genetic structure of F. penicillatus.

Branchiostoma belcheri Gray is a second-class, nationally protected protochordate in China. We developed 10 novel polymorphic sites in B. belcheri, which were examined using a population of 30 wild individuals from Xiamen, China. The polymorphism information content ranged between 0.141 and 0.681, and the number of alleles varied from 2 to 5. The expected and observed heterozygosities varied between 0.1528 and 0.6920, and between 0.1429 and 0.5000, respectively. These novel microsatellite markers will facilitate the genetic analysis and protection of wild B. belcheri individuals, and the possible re-stocking of the species in the long-term.

Curry fish (Stichopus horrens) is a tropical holothurian species and is widely distributed in the India-West Pacific. In the present study, 9 polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for S. horrens. These loci were tested in 30 individuals from Hainan Island in China. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 5. The polymorphism information content ranged from 0.348-0.584. The levels of observed and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.1500-0.8000 and from 0.2014-0.5000, respectively. Most loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, except HCS1-27 and HCS2-7, after sequential Bonferroni's correction, and no significant linkage disequilibrium was detected for any pairwise combination of loci. These polymorphic microsatellite loci will be useful for studying population structure and conservation strategy design for S. horrens.

The pen shell, Atrina pectinata, is an economically valuable species that is widely distributed along the coastal waters of temperate and tropical areas, mainly growing in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Eight novel microsatellite loci from the genome of A. pectinata were developed using fast isolation by amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequence containing repeats. The loci were screened in 30 wild individuals. The results showed that the number of alleles per locus and the polymorphism information content ranged from 2-6 and from 0.233-0.447, respectively. Observed and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.2069-0.7931 and 0.1887-0.5124, respectively. No significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were detected. These microsatellite loci will be useful for further population studies of genetic diversity, population structure assessment, and conservation of A. pectinata.

Thirteen new polymorphic microsatellite markers in Fenneropenaeus penicillatus were isolated and characterized. The polymorphism of the thirteen microsatellite markers was tested by 30 individuals from Lianjiang, China. It showed that the number of al-leles per locus ranged from 3 to 6 and the Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) was from 0.324 to 0.706. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.3217-0.8023 and 0.1977-0.6783, respectively. Only one loci (LJ-19) deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) (P < 0.00385) after Bonferroni correction, while the other twelve markers were in HWE after Bonferroni correction (P > 0.00385). The thirteen polymorphic microsatellite markers could pro-vide more genetic data for further research on cultivation and recovery of F. penicillatus.

Lunella coronata granulata, from the family Turbini-dae, is an economically important species. The first set of 10 poly-morphic microsatellite loci was screened from L. coronata granulata, and 30 individuals were used to analyze the degree of polymorphism in these loci. The level of observed and expected heterozygosity was 0.0667-0.7333 and 0.0644-0.6628, respectively. The polymorphism information content varied from 0.305 to 0.559. Eight loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) (P > 0.05), while two loci devi-ated significantly from the HWE after Bonferroni's correction (P < 0.005). The isolated microsatellite loci can be utilized in studies of population genetic analysis and they provide important genetic mark-ers for construction of genetic linkage maps and genetic breeding of L. coronata granulata resources.

Megalonibea fusca is a commercially important large edible fish. In this study, the first set of 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci for M. fusca was developed and characterized. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to five, with the observed and expected heterozygosities ranging from 0.0667 to 0.7667, and from 0.0644 to 0.5828, respectively. Most of the loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05), except for two loci (Mf25 and Mf30) after a Bonferroni's correction (P < 0.005). These informative microsatellite markers will be useful in further studies of the population and conservation genetics of this species.

The pen shell, Atrina vexillum Born, is an edible shellfish that is widely consumed in the Asia-Pacific region. In this study, 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from A. vexillum, and 30 wild individuals were used to evaluate the degree of polymorphism of these markers. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 8. The polymorphism information content varied from 0.199 to 0.831. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.1000-0.8667 and 0.1244-0.8356, respectively. Two loci deviated significantly from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) after a Bonferroni correction, while the other nine loci were at HWE. These microsatellite loci will be useful in further studies on population genetic analyses, and will provide important genetic data for the conservation and recovery of A. vexillum.

The marbled rockfish, Sebastiscus marmoratus, is an important commercially near-shore fish that inhabits the beach rocky bottom from Japan to the South China Sea. Eleven polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed from S. marmoratus and were used to identify polymorphisms in 30 samples from a wild population. The allele locus number ranged from 2 to 7. Polymorphism data content ranged from 0.032 to 0.751. The observed and expected heterozygosity levels were 0.0333-0.9667 and 0.0328-0.7675, respectively. Two loci, Smd1-112 and Smd2-80, deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These polymorphic microsatellite markers will facilitate further studies of genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of S. marmoratus.

Holothuria leucospilota is a tropical holothurian species that is widely distributed in the tropical and sub-tropical India-Western Pacific Region. Eight polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed from H. leucospilota by using the protocol fast isolation by amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeats and tested in 30 individuals from Hainan Island in China. The number of alleles was 2-6 and polymorphism information content ranged from 0.371-0.694. The levels of expected and observed heterozygosities varied from 0.3913-0.6701 and from 0.1154-0.7000, respectively. No significant linkage disequilibrium was detected for any pairwise combination of loci. Only loci YZHS1-42 deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These polymorphic microsatellite loci may be useful for germplasm conservation of H. leucospilota.

The rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens is an economically valuable species that is widely distributed throughout the estuaries, intertidal, and offshore coasts of the Indo-Pacific and eastern Mediterranean. Ten novel microsatellite loci from the genome of S. fuscescens were developed using the fast isolation protocol with amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeats. Polymorphisms in these 10 microsatellite markers were determined from 32 wild individuals. The number of alleles per locus and the polymorphism information content ranged from 2 to 5 and from 0.059 to 0.668, respectively. The observed and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.063 to 0.781 and from 0.062 to 0.731, respectively. Although 1 locus (LZY-X7, P < 0.005) showed significant deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, no deviations were detected in the other 9 loci. These microsatellite loci may be useful for further population genetic studies, conservation studies, population structure assessment, and linkage map construction of S. fuscescens.

Fenneropenaeus penicillatus, with high protein and low fat, is a commercially important aquatic product in China. Microsatellite loci were developed according to the protocol of fast isolation by amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeats. Eight new polymorphic microsatellite markers for F. penicillatus were identified, and 32 wild individuals were used to evaluate the degree of polymorphism of these markers. The polymorphism information content ranged from 0.2703 to 0.7598, and the number of alleles per locus varied from 3 to 6. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.1613-0.5556 and 0.2347-0.7387, respectively. No significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.00625) were detected. These polymorphic microsatellite loci will be useful to study the genetic diversity and population structure of F. penicillatus.

Siganus fuscescens, which is a small commercially important marine fish, is wildly distributed in shallow waters throughout the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean regions. It is part of a group known as rabbitfish. Fifteen new polymorphic microsatellite markers for S. fuscescens were identified, and 32 wild individuals were used to evaluate the degree of polymorphism of these markers. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 12, and the polymorphism information content ranged from 0.210 to 0.849. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.142-0.808 and 0.225-0.853, respectively. Although significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were detected at 2 loci (Sf1-37-2 and Sf1-47), no significant deviations were detected at the other 13 loci. These microsatellite markers will provide a useful tool for studies on genetic diversity and differentiation of S. fuscescens.

In order to assess the effects of the surface hydrophilicity of supports on the biofilm formation and evaluate the performance of completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite (CANON) process in a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR), unmodified activity carbon fibers (ACFs) and ACFs hydrophilic modified by heat treatment were used as supports. CANON process was initiated in a SBBR from conventional activated sludge. An operation temperature of 32 ± 2 °C, dissolved oxygen (DO) level at 1.5 mg L⁻¹ and free ammonia (FA) concentration with 3.98-15.93 mg L⁻¹ were maintained in the SBBR. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and Boehm's neutralizing titration exhibited that modified ACFs had more oxygen-containing groups than unmodified ACFs. Larger biofilm growth on the modified surfaces examined by scanning electron microscopy and biofilm's total dry weight, and the biofilm on the modified surfaces were more active, compared with those on the unmodified surfaces. This study demonstrates the hydrophilic-modified ACFs have better biological affinity than unmodified ACFs. Maximal total nitrogen removal rate of 0.088 k g N m⁻³ day⁻¹ was achieved for the CANON process on day 80, indicating the CANON process was successfully started up. Apart from supports, the strategies of DO supplying and controlling FA concentration were also keys in starting up the CANON process within a shorter period.

The genetic diversity and differentiation of Lilium formolongi Hort. lines in self-inbred early generations were studied by allozyme electrophoresis. The results showed that mean allele number/locus, percentage of polymorphic loci, average observed heterozygosity and average expected heterozygosity were decreased with the increment of self-inbred generations. The purified loci, purified speed, fixed alleles and increment of genetic differentiation were different among lines because of selection and self-inbred. The mean genetic distances among F4 lines were larger than that of F3 lines, serving as another evidence to prove the differentiation among lines.
