A series of structurally similar trinuclear macrocyclic copper(I) and silver(I) pyrazolate complexes bearing various short-bite diphosphine R 2 PCH(R')PR 2 ligands are reported. Upon diphosphine coordination, the planar geometry of the initial complexes undergoes bending along the line between two metal atoms coordinated to the phosphorus moieties. The complexes based on dcpm ligands (R = cyclohexyl, R' = H, Ph) do not exhibit dynamic behavior in solution at room temperature on the 31 P NMR time scale as it was previously observed for similar trinuclear copper complexes bearing the dppm (R = Ph, R' = H) scaffold. All copper(I) complexes exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) behavior in the solid state. Importantly, the use of aliphatic substituents on the phosphorus atoms instead of aromatic ones leads to an almost double increase in the quantum efficiency (Φ PL ) of photoluminescence by eliminating nonradiative decay from the 3 LC Ph states of the dppm aromatic rings. The higher donating ability of the substituents in the pyrazolate ligand (CF 3 vs CH 3 ) lowers the energy of the metal-centered excited state, allowing for a significant metal impact on the T 1 state. Finally, the Ag(I) complex displays an emission efficiency of approximately 14%, being the highest among known trinuclear silver(I) pyrazolate homometallic derivatives.

The development of novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen peroxide production from water and oxygen is particularly interesting, yet remains a challenge. Herein, we have prepared four cyclic trinuclear units (CTUs) based MOFs, exhibiting good light absorption ability and suitable band gaps for photosynthesis of H 2 O 2 . However, Cu-CTU-based MOFs are not able to photocatalyzed the formation of H 2 O 2 , while the alteration of metal nodes from Cu-CTU to Ag-CTU dramatically enhances the photocatalytic performance for H 2 O 2 production and the production rates can reach as high as 17476 μmol g -1  h -1 with an apparent quantum yield of 4.72 %, at 420 nm, which is much higher than most reported MOFs. The photocatalytic mechanism is comprehensively studied by combining the isotope labeling experiments and DFT calculation. Effectively regulating monomer and excimer emission in a singular supramolecular luminous platform is challenging due to high difficulty of precise control over its aggregation and dispersion behavior when subjected to external stimuli. Here, we show a metallo-cage (MTH) featuring a triple helical motif that displays a unique dual emission. It arises from both intramolecular monomer and intermolecular excimer, respectively. The distorted molecular conformation and the staggered stacking mode of MTH excimer are verified through single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These structural features facilitate the switch between monomer and excimer emission, which are induced by changes in concentration and temperature. Significantly, adjusting the equilibrium between these two states in MTH enables the production of vibrant white light emission in both solution and solid state. Moreover, when combined with a PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) substrate, the resulting thin films can serve as straightforward fluorescence thermometer and thermally activated information encryption materials., (© 2024. The development of metal complexes for photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) from pure water and oxygen using solar energy, especially in the absence of any additives ( e.g. , acid, co-catalysts, and sacrificial agents), is a worthwhile pursuit, yet still remains highly challenging. More importantly, the O 2 evolution from the water oxidation reaction has been impeded by the classic bottleneck, the photon-flux-density problem of sunlight that could be attributed to rarefied solar radiation for a long time. Herein, we reported synthesis of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based cyclic trinuclear silver complexes (Ag-CTC), and they exhibited strong visible-light absorption ability, a suitable energy bandgap, excellent photochemical properties and efficient charge separation ability. The integration of BODIPY motifs as oxygen reduction reaction sites and silver ions as water oxidation reaction sites allows Ag-CTC to photosynthesize H 2 O 2 either from pure water or from sea water in the absence of any additives with a high H 2 O 2 production rate of 183.7 and 192.3 μM h -1 , which is higher than that of other reported metal-based photocatalysts. The photocatalytic mechanism was systematically and ambiguously investigated by various experimental analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Developing efficient, low-cost, MOF catalysts for CO 2 conversion at low CO 2 concentrations under mild conditions is particularly interesting but remains highly challenging. Herein, we prepared an isostructural series of two-dimensional (2D) multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MTV-MOFs) containing copper- and/or silver-based cyclic trinuclear complexes (Cu-CTC and Ag-CTC). These MTV-MOFs can be used as efficient and reusable heterogeneous catalysts for the cyclization of propargylamine with CO 2 . The catalytic performance of these MTV-MOFs can be engineered by fine-tuning the Ag/Cu ratio in the framework. Interestingly, the induction of 10% Ag remarkably improved the catalytic efficiency with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 243 h -1 , which is 20-fold higher than that of 100% Cu-based MOF (i.e., TOF = 10.8 h -1 ). More impressively, such a bimetallic MOF still exhibited high catalytic activity even for simulated flue gas with 10% CO 2 concentration. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism has been examined through the employment of NMR monitoring experiments and DFT calculations.

Owing to well-defined structure as well as easy synthesis and modification, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising catalysts for tandem reactions. In this article, we aim to summarize the development of multifunctional MOFs, including mixed metal MOFs, MOFs that are synergistically catalyzed by metal nodes and organic linkers, MOFs loaded with metal nanoparticles, etc, as heterogenous catalysts for tandem reactions over the past five years. The construction of stable copper nanoclusters (Cu-NCs) with near-infrared (NIR) emission that can be used for catalysis is highly desired, yet remains a challenge. Herein, an atomically precise bimetallic Cu/Pd NC with a molecular formula of Cu 16 Pd 1 L 10 (PPh 3 ) 2 (Pz) 6 (Pz = 3,5-(CF 3 ) 2 Pyrazolate, L = 4-CH 3 OPhC≡C - ), abbreviated as Cu 16 Pd 1 , is synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis of Cu 16 Pd 1 reveals a Cu 10 Pd 1 kernel with pseudo-gyroelongated square bipyramid confirmation surrounded by other 6 Cu(I) ions and protected ligands. Interestingly, it exhibits strong NIR emission with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) among all the Cu NCs/Cu alloys (λ em  > 800 nm) in the solid-state, and also displays NIR emission in solution. Experimental results and theoretical calculations suggest that the impressive NIR emission is attributed to abundant supramolecular interactions in the solid-state, including intramolecular metal-metal and intermolecular interactions. Of note, the bimetallic Cu 16 Pd 1 can catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The properties of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs), including porosity, catalytic activity as well as electronic and optical properties, are greatly affected by their interlayer stacking structures. However, the precise control of their interlayer stacking mode, especially in a reversible fashion, is a long-standing and challenging pursuit. Herein, we prepare three 2D copper-organic frameworks, namely JNM-n (n = 7, 8, and 9). Interestingly, the reversible interlayer sliding between eclipsed AA stacking (i.e., JNM-7-AA and JNM-8-AA) and staggered ABC stacking (i.e., JNM-7-ABC and JNM-8-ABC) can be achieved through environmental stimulation, which endows reversible encapsulation and release of lipase. Importantly, JNM-7-AA and JNM-8-AA exhibit a broader light absorption range, higher charge-separation efficiency, and higher photocatalytic activity for sensitizing O 2 to 1 O 2 and O 2 •- than their ABC stacking isostructures. Consequently, JNM-8-AA deliver significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities for oxidative cross-coupling reactions compared to JNM-8-ABC and other reported homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts., (© 2024. The development of energy-saving technology for the efficient separation of olefin and paraffin is highly important for the chemical industry. Herein, we report a self-assembled Fe 4 L 6 capsule containing a hydrophobic cavity, which can be used to encapsulate and separate propylene/propane. The successful encapsulation of propylene and propane by the Fe 4 L 6 cage in a water solution was documented by NMR spectroscopy. The binding constants K for the Fe 4 L 6 cage toward propylene and propane were determined to be (5.0±0.1)×10 3  M -1 and (2.1±0.7)×10 4  M -1 in D 2 O at 25 °C, respectively. Experiments and theoretical studies revealed that the cage exhibited multiple weak interactions with propylene and propane. The polymer-grade propylene (>99.5 %) can be obtained from a mixture of propylene and propane by using the Fe 4 L 6 cage as a separation material in a U-shaped glass tube. The development of efficient, recyclable and low-cost heterogeneous catalysts for conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into epoxides is highly desired, yet remain a challenge. Herein, we have prepared three two-dimensional (2D) copper(I) cyclic trinuclear units (Cu(I)-CTUs) based covalent metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs), namely JNM-13, JNM-14, and JNM-15, via a one-pot reaction by combination of coordination and dynamic covalent chemistry. Among them, JNM-15 contained the highest density of copper catalytic sites, and exhibited the highest capacity for adsorption of CO 2 . More interestingly, JNM-15 delivered the highest catalytic activity for cycloaddition of CO 2 to epoxides with good yields (up to 99 %), good substrate compatibility (11 examples) and reusability (four catalytic cycles) under mild condition., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Construction of gold-based metal-organic frameworks (Au-MOFs) would bring the merits of gold chemistry into MOFs. However, it still remains challenging because gold cations are easily reduced to metallic gold under solvothermal conditions. Herein, we present the first example of Au-MOFs prepared from the networking of cyclic trinuclear gold(I) complexes by formal transimination reaction in a rapid (<15 min) and scalable (up to 1 g) fashion under ambient condition. The Au-MOFs feature uniform porosity, high crystallinity, and superior chemical stability toward base (i.e., 20 M NaOH). With open Au(I) sites in the skeleton, the Au-MOFs as heterogeneous catalysts delivered good performance and substrate tolerance for the carboxylation reactions of alkynes with CO 2 . This work demonstrates a facile approach to reticularly synthesize Au-MOFs by combining the coordination and dynamic covalent chemistry.

Owing to the wide and growing demand for primary alcohols, the development of efficient catalysts with high regioselectivity remains a worthwhile pursuit. However, according to Markovnikov's rule, it is a challenge to obtain primary alcohols with high yields and regioselectivity from terminal alkenes or alkynes. Herein, we report the synthesis of a photosensitizing two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) from cyclic trinuclear copper(I) units (Cu-CTUs) and a boron dipyrro-methene (Bodipy) ligand. The MOF features broadband light absorption, excellent photoinduced charge separation efficiency, and photochemical properties. By integrating the copper-catalyzed hydroboration and photocatalyzed aerobic oxidation, it can catalyze terminal alkenes and alkynes to produce primary alcohols via a one-pot tandem reaction with excellent regioselectivity, good overall yields in two-step reactions (up to 85 %), broad substrate compatibility (32 examples) and good reusability under mild conditions., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as metal-free photocatalysts have attracted extensive interest. However, the organic transformations photocatalyzed by COFs under mild conditions remain a challenge. Herein, a boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) based 1D COF, namely JNM-12, was facilely constructed by Schiff-base condensation reaction. JNM-12 exhibited strong visible-light harvesting abilities and suitable photocatalysis energy potentials, enabling the activation of O 2 to superoxide anions (O 2 ⋅ - ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) under visible light irradiation. Benefiting from these properties, JNM-12 delivered excellent photocatalytic activity in the O 2 ⋅ - -mediated oxidative coupling of amines and 1 O 2 -engaged aerobic oxidation of enamines. The synthesis of atomically precise copper nanoclusters (Cu-NCs) with high chemical stability is a prerequisite for practical applications, yet still remains a long-standing challenge. Herein, we have prepared a pyrazolate-protected Cu-NC (Cu8), which exhibited exceptional chemical stability either in solid-state or in solution. The crystals of Cu8 are still suitable for single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis even after being treated with boiling water, 8 wt % H 2 O 2 , high concentrated acid (1 M HCl) or saturated base (≈20 M KOH), respectively. More importantly, the structure of Cu8 in solution also remained intact toward oxygen, organic acid (100 eq. HOAc) or base (400 eq. dibutylamine) confirmed by 1 H NMR and UV/Vis analysis. Taking advantage of high alkali-resistant, Cu8 illustrates excellent catalytic activity for the synthesis of indolizines, and it can be reused for at least 10 cycles without losing catalytic performance., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The design of adsorbents for rapid, selective extraction of ultra-trace amounts of gold from complex liquids is desirable from both an environmental and economical point of view. However, the development of such materials remains challenging. Herein, we report the fabrication of two vinylene-linked two-dimensional silver(I)-organic frameworks prepared via Knoevenagel condensation. This material enables selective sensing of gold with a low limit of detection of 60 ppb, as well as selective uptake of ultra-trace gold from complex aqueous mixtures including distilled water with 15 competing metal ions, leaching solution of electronic waste (e-waste), wastewater, and seawater. The present adsorbent delivers a gold adsorption capacity of 954 mg g -1 , excellent selectivity and reusability, and can rapidly and selectively extract ultra-trace gold from seawater down to ~20 ppb (94% removal in 10 minutes). Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework nanosheets (MONs) or membranes are classes of periodic, crystalline polymeric materials that may show unprecedented physicochemical properties due to their modular structures, high surface areas, and high aspect ratios. Yet preparing 2D MONs from multiple components and two different types of polymerization reaction remains challenging and less explored. Here, we report the synthesis of MOF films via interfacial polymerization, which involves three active monomers for simultaneous polycondensation and polycoordination taking place in a confined interface. The well-defined lamellar structure of the MOF films allowed feasible and scalable exfoliation to produce free-standing 2D MONs with high aspect ratio up to 2000:1 and ultrathin thickness (∼1.7 nm). The pore structure was revealed by high-resolution TEM images with near-atomic precision. The imide-linkage of MONs provided superior thermal (up to 530 °C) and good chemical stability in the pH range from 3 to 12. More importantly, the MONs exhibited exceptional catalytic activity and superior reusability for the hydroboration reactions of alkynes, in which the turnover frequency (TOF) reached 41734 h -1 , which is 2-4 orders of magnitude greater than that reported for homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts.

Facile tailoring of photosensitizers (PSs) with advanced and synergetic properties is highly expected to broaden and deepen photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications. Herein, a catalyst-free thiol-yne click reaction was employed to develop the sulfur atom-based PSs by using the in situ formed sulfur "heavy atom effect" to enhance the intersystem crossing (ISC), while such an effect can be remarkably magnified by the polymerization. The introduction of a tetraphenylpyrazine-based aggregation-induced emission (AIE) unit was also advantageous in PS design by suppressing their non-radiative decay to facilitate the ISC in the aggregated state. Besides, the resulting sulfur atom electron donor, together with a double-bond π bridge and AIE electron acceptor, created a donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) molecular system with good two-photon excitation properties. Combined with the high singlet oxygen generation efficiency, the fabricated polymer nanoparticles exhibited an excellent in vitro two-photon-excited PDT towards cancer cells, therefore possessing a huge potential for the deep-tissue disease therapy., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Coordination complexes with aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) behavior has drawn much attention because of their promising applications. Conventionally, the AIE-active metal-organic complexes are prepared from an AIE-active organic ligand, and the construction of such coordination complexes from aggregation-caused-quenching (ACQ) ligands is still challenging. Herein, we have synthesized two new cyclic trinuclear complexes (CTCs), namely, 1 and 2 , from copper(I) and silver(I) and a ACQ ligand [4-(3,5-dimethyl-1 H -pyrazol-4-yl)benzaldehyde, HL ]. ( 1 ) exhibited AIE behavior, and the emission intensity is enhanced ∼20 times when it aggregates, which can be attributed to its tight packing and multiple intermolecular hydrogen bonds that restrained the intramolecular rotation, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. On the other hand, ( 2 ) displayed ACQ effects, and the emission intensity is decreased ∼5 times when it aggregates. This ACQ behavior of 2 is related to its loose packing and free rotation of the ligand in crystals, resulting in nonradiative decay and fluorescence quenching. Interestingly, the CTCs 1 and 2 both exhibited a good affinity to gold(III) ions, allowing selective detection and sensing of gold ions. More importantly, the 2 shows a good limit of detection (3.28 μmol/L) and an ultrafast responsive time (∼2 s). Our studies pave a new route to designing novel AIE-active coordination complexes and further exploring the functionality of CTCs.

Development of new porous materials as hosts to suppress the dissolution and shuttle of lithium polysulfides is beneficial for constructing highly efficient lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Although 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as host materials exhibit promising potential for LSBs, their performance is still not satisfactory. Herein, we develop polyimide COFs (PI-COF) with a well-defined lamellar structure, which can be exfoliated into ultrathin (∼1.2 nm) 2D polyimide nanosheets (PI-CONs) with a large size (∼6 μm) and large quantity (40 mg/batch). Explored as new sulfur host materials for LSBs, PI-COF and PI-CONs deliver high capacities (1330 and 1205 mA h g -1 at 0.1 C, respectively), excellent rate capabilities (620 and 503 mA h g -1 at 4 C, respectively), and superior cycling stability (96% capacity retention at 0.2 C for PI-CONs) by virtue of the synergy of robust conjugated porous frameworks and strong oxygen-lithium interactions, surpassing the vast majority of organic/polymeric lithium-sulfur battery cathodes ever reported. Our finding demonstrates that ultrathin 2D COF nanosheets with carbonyl groups could be promising host materials for LSBs with excellent electrochemical performance.

The interlay sliding of two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic and covalent-organic frameworks (MOFs and COFs) affects not only the layout features of the structures, but also the functional output of the materials. However, the control of interlay stacking is the major hurdle that needs to be overcome to construct new functional layer materials. Herein, we report the preparation of a pair of isostructural 2D copper(i) organic frameworks with an eclipsed AA stacking structure, namely JNM-3-AA , and a staggered ABC stacking topology, denoted JNM-3-ABC , by combining the chemistry of MOFs and COFs. The variation of interlayer stacking largely influences their functionality, including porosity (BET surface areas of 695.61 and 34.22 m 2 g -1 for JNM-3-AA and JNM-3-ABC , respectively), chemical stability, and catalytic activities (less than 10% or ∼86% yield using JNM-3-AA or JNM-3-ABC as catalysts for click reaction, respectively). More interestingly, the structure transformation from JNM-3-ABC to JNM-3-AA is readily achieved by simple addition of trifluoroacetic acid accompanied by the extension of porosities from BET surface areas of 34.22 to 441.22 m 2 g -1 , resulting in in situ acceleration of the adoption rate (removal efficiency increases from ∼10 to 99.9%), which is rarely observed in 2D MOFs and COFs., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Interest in piezochromic luminescence has increased in recent decades, even though it is mostly limited to pure organic compounds and fluorescence. In this work, a Cu 3 Pz 3 ( Cu3 , Pz: pyrazolate) cyclic trinuclear complex (CTC) with two different crystalline polymorphs, namely 1a and 1b , was synthesized. The CTC consists of two functional moieties: carbazole ( Cz ) chromophore and Cu3 units. In crystals of 1a , discrete Cz - Cu3 - Cu3 - Cz stacking was found, showing abnormal pressure-induced phosphorescence enhancement (PIPE), which was 12 times stronger at 2.23 GPa compared to under ambient conditions. This novel observation is ascribed to cooperation between heavy-atom effects ( i.e. , from Cu atoms) and metal-ligand charge-transfer promotion. The infinite π-π stacking of Cz motifs was observed in 1b and it exhibited good piezochromism as the pressure increased. Among the d 10 coinage metal complexes, cyclic trinuclear complexes (CTCs) or trinuclear metallocycles with intratrimer metal-metal interactions are fascinating and important metal-organic or organometallic π-acids/bases. Each CTC of characteristic planar or near-planar trimetal nine-membered rings consists of Au(I)/Ag(I)/Cu(I) cations that linearly coordinate with N and/or C atoms in ditopic anionic bridging ligands. Since the first discovery of Au(I) CTC in the 1970s, research of CTCs has involved several fundamental areas, including noncovalent and metallophilic interaction, excimer/exciplex, acid-base chemistry, metalloaromaticity, supramolecular assemblies, and host/guest chemistry. These allow CTCs to be embraced in a wide range of innovative potential applications that include chemical sensing, semiconducting, gas and liquid adsorption/separation, catalysis, full-color display, and solid-state lighting. This review aims to provide a historic and comprehensive summary on CTCs and their extension to higher nuclearity complexes and coordination polymers from the perspectives of synthesis, structure, theoretical insight, and potential applications.

The first coordination disk-type nano-Saturn complexes, [Cu10(Mim)10]⊃C60 and [Cu10(Mim)10]⊃C70 (Mim = 2-methylimidazolate), were assembled under one-pot solvothermal conditions. The highest number of 30 C-Hπ interactions between the [Cu10(Mim)10] disk and the C60/C70 surfaces drives the formation of the nano-Saturns. The calculated interaction energy is much larger than that of most of the reported disk-type nano-Saturns. Different photoinduced charge/energy transfer mechanisms are present for both nano-Saturn systems to quench the intrinsic luminescence of the [Cu10(Mim)10] disk.

Most two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are non-fluorescent in the solid state even when they are constructed from emissive building blocks. The fluorescence quenching is usually attributed to non-irradiative rotation-related or π-π stacking-caused thermal energy dissipation process. Currently there is a lack of guiding principle on how to design fluorescent, solid-state material made of COF. Herein, we demonstrate that the eclipsed stacking structure of 2D COFs can be used to turn on, and tune, the solid-state photoluminescence from non-emissive building blocks by the restriction of intramolecular bond rotation via intralayer and interlayer hydrogen bonds among highly organized layers in the eclipse-stacked COFs. Our COFs serve as a platform whereby the size of the conjugated linkers and side-chain functionalities can be varied, rendering the emission colour-tuneable from blue to yellow and even white. This work provides a guide to design new solid-state emitters using COFs.

The strong π-π interactions in the stacking layers of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs), together with rotationally labile imine linkages, make most of the solid state imine-linked COFs non-fluorescent due to fluorescence quenching processes. Here, we report the successful synthesis of highly photoluminescent imine-based 2D-COFs by integrating a non-planar building unit with a pyrene-based unit and transforming the COF into spherical, sub-micron particles. High photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) were achieved with COF sub-micron particles dispersed in organic solvents. The as-prepared COF sub-micron particles can be used as a chemical sensor for the detection of explosive chemicals, with high sensitivity and selectivity (up to ppm level).

Deuterium labeling is of great value in organic synthesis and the pharmaceutical industry. However, the state-of-the-art C-H/C-D exchange using noble metal catalysts or strong bases/acids suffers from poor functional group tolerances, poor selectivity and lack of scope for generating molecular complexity. Herein, we demonstrate the deuteration of halides using heavy water as the deuteration reagent and porous CdSe nanosheets as the catalyst. The deuteration mechanism involves the generation of highly active carbon and deuterium radicals via photoinduced electron transfer from CdSe to the substrates, followed by tandem radicals coupling process, which is mechanistically distinct from the traditional methods involving deuterium cations or anions. Our deuteration strategy shows better selectivity and functional group tolerances than current C-H/C-D exchange methods. Extending the synthetic scope, deuterated boronic acids, halides, alkynes, and aldehydes can be used as synthons in Suzuki coupling, Click reaction, C-H bond insertion reaction etc. for the synthesis of complex deuterated molecules.

Porous materials such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are good candidates for molecular sieves due to the chemical diversity of their building blocks, which allows fine-tuning of their chemical and physical properties by design. Tailored synthesis of inherently functional building blocks can generate framework materials with chemoresponsivity, leading to controllable functionalities such as switchable sorption and separation. Herein, we demonstrate a chemoselective, salicylideneanilines-based COF (SA-COF), which undergoes solvent-triggered tautomeric switching. This is unique compared to solid-state salicylideneanilines' counterpart, which typically requires high energy input such as photo or thermal activation to trigger the enol-keto tautomerisim and cis-trans isomerization. Accompanying the tautomerization, the ionic properties of the COF can be tuned reversibly, thus forming the basis of size-exclusion, selective ionic binding or chemoseparation in SA-COF demonstrated in this work.

The fabrication of crystalline 2D conjugated polymers with well-defined repeating units and in-built porosity presents a significant challenge to synthetic chemists. Yet they present an appealing target because of their desirable physical and electronic properties. Here we report the preparation of a 2D conjugated aromatic polymer synthesized via C-C coupling reactions between tetrabromopolyaromatic monomers. Pre-arranged monomers in the bulk crystal undergo C-C coupling driven by endogenous solid-state polymerization to produce a crystalline polymer, which can be mechanically exfoliated into micrometre-sized lamellar sheets with a thickness of 1 nm. Isothermal gas-sorption measurements of the bulk material reveal a dominant pore size of ~0.6 nm, which indicates uniform open channels from the eclipsed stacking of the sheets. When employed as an organic anode in an ambient-temperature sodium cell, the material allows a fast charge/discharge of sodium ions, with impressive reversible capacity, rate capability and stability metrics.

The development of organic molecule-based batteries is hampered by stability issues caused by the dissolution of the active organic materials in electrolytes. Herein, phenazine (PNZ) and 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) are investigated as organic electrode materials. The presence of amino functional groups in DAP dramatically enhances its electrochemical performances due to suppressed dissolution in the electrolyte.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess great structural diversity because of the flexible design of linker groups and metal nodes. The structure-property correlation has been extensively investigated in areas like chiral catalysis, gas storage and absorption, water purification, energy storage, etc. However, the use of MOFs in lithium storage is hampered by stability issues, and how its porosity helps with battery performance is not well understood. Herein, through anion and thermodynamic control, we design a series of naphthalenediimide-based MOFs 1-4 that can be used for cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Complexation of the N,N'-di(4-pyridyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (DPNDI) ligand and CdX 2 (X = NO 3 - or ClO 4 - ) produces complexes MOFs 1 and 2 with a one-dimensional (1D) nonporous network and a porous, noninterpenetrated two-dimensional (2D) square-grid structure, respectively. With the DPNDI ligand and Co(NCS) 2 , a porous 1D MOF 3 as a kinetic product is obtained, while a nonporous, noninterpenetrated 2D square-grid structure MOF 4 as a thermodynamic product is formed. The performance of LIBs is largely affected by the stability and porosity of these MOFs. For instance, the initial charge-discharge curves of MOFs 1 and 2 show a specific capacity of ∼47 mA h g -1 with a capacity retention ratio of >70% during 50 cycles at 100 mA g -1 , which is much better than that of MOFs 3 and 4. The better performances are assigned to the higher stability of Cd(II) MOFs compared to that of Co(II) MOFs during the electrochemical process, according to X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition, despite having the same Cd(II) node in the framework, MOF 2 exhibits a lithium-ion diffusion coefficient (D Li ) larger than that of MOF 1 because of its higher porosity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared analysis indicate that metal nodes in these MOFs remain intact and only the DPNDI ligand undergoes the revisible redox reaction during the lithiation-delithiation process.

A networked spin cage comprising infinite Co II 6 L 4 cages arrays (where Co = Co(NCS) 2 and L = 1,3,5-tri-(4-pyridyl)-verdazal radical) is synthesized and found to exhibit tunable magnetic and electrochemical properties via inclusion of guests. SQUID investigation reveals the coexistence of ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic interactions between the Co(II) ion center and radical ligands. Inclusion of electron-deficient guests (e.g., tetracyanoethylene) dramatically enhances spin concentration and increases anti-ferromagnetic interactions due to the formation of charge-transfer complex between the host and the guest. In addition, introduction of electron-rich guests (e.g., tetrathiafulvalene) into the networked spin cages doubles the capacity for binding the lithium ions.

A coordination network composed of a mannose-based organic ligand and a sodium ion, 'sugar sponge', was synthesized for the crystalline sponge analysis of hydrophilic compounds. Owing to multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions, hydrophilic guests are firmly trapped in the 1-dimensional channel. The sugar sponge was utilized to analyze the structures of flexible alcohol and absolute configurations of chiral epoxides.

Inspiration for molecular design and construction can be derived from mathematically based structures. In the quest for new materials, the adaptation of new building blocks can lead to unexpected results. Towards these ends, the quantitative single-step self-assembly of a shape-persistent, Archimedean-based building block, which generates the largest molecular sphere (a cuboctahedron) that has been unequivocally characterized by synchrotron X-ray analysis, is described. The unique properties of this new construct give rise to a dilution-based transformation into two identical spheres (octahedra) each possessing one half of the molecular weight of the parent structure; concentration of this octahedron reconstitutes the original cuboctahedron. These chemical phenomena are reminiscent of biological fission and fusion processes. The large 6 nm cage structure was further analyzed by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and collision cross-section analysis. Reactive acrylate esters were encapsulated in the cavity of networked molecular capsules in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashion. Taking the water, sediment, and Potamogeton crispus collected from Shihoudian, Wangjiazhai, and Xiaodian in Baiyangdian Lake area into laboratory, three simulated static systems were built to study the growth of P. crispus and its effect on the removal of total phosphorus from eutrophic water and sediment. Among the three systems, Shihoudian system had the best purification effect, with the removal efficiency of total phosphorus from water body being 87.9%, followed by Wangjiazhai system 47.4%, and Xiaodian system 76.9%. The largest total phosphorus removal efficiency per gram biomass in Shihoudian, Wangjiazhai, and Xiaodian systems was 2.2%, 0.9%, and 1.4%, and the largest total phosphorus adsorption rate of sediments was 9.1%, 7.4%, and 7.7%, respectively. The TP-t and v-t fitted equations of the three systems indicated that the total phosphorus concentration in water and the removal rate of the total phosphorus were negatively exponentially decreased with time.

By employing diimine ligands coordinated dimetallic clips ([(bpy)2Pd2(NO3)2](NO3)2 or [(phen)2Pd2(NO3)2](NO3)2, where bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) as the corner and anthracene-, naphthalene-, and benzene-based dipyrazolate dianions as the linker, a series of positively charged metallomacrocycles ([M4L2]4+ or [M8L4]8+) have been synthesized through a directed self-assembly method in aqueous solution. Every macrocycle has a cavity to bind solvent molecules or anions. The structures were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H and 13C NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for compound 1 x 4 PF6(-) (1 = {[(bpy)Pd]4L(1)2}4+), 3 x 4 PF6(-) x 8 CH3CN x H2O (3 = {[(bpy)Pd]4L(2)2}4+), and 7 x 4 PF6(-) x 6 H2O (7 = {[(bpy)Pd]4L(5)2}4+). The 1:1 host-guest complexation for anthracene-based dipyrazolate-bridged macrocycles with aromatic guests was investigated via UV-vis and fluorescent titration.

By employing different diimine complexes and a naphthanoimidazolate (L(1)) or benzoimidazolate (L(2)) anion ligand as linker, a series of trimetallo-macrocycles have been synthesized through a directed self-assembly approach that involves spontaneous deprotonation of the ligands in aqueous solution. Some compounds, namely, [M(3)L(3)](NO(3))(3) (M = (18-crown-6-phen)Pt, 1 or 7; (15-crown-5-phen)Pt, 2; (benzo-24-crown-8-phen)Pt, 8; (benzo-24-crown-8-phen)Pd, 9; (15-crown-5-phen)Pd, 4 or 11; (18-crown-6-phen)Pd, 3 or 10; (dmbpy)Pd, 6 or 14; (bpy)Pd, 5 or 13; (bpy)Pt, 12; (N4-Phen)Pd, 15) were synthesized. In all of these compounds, the L(1)or L(2) anion ligands are in a syn, syn, syn orientation which result in a bowl-like cavity that can serve as a host to bind the methyl of a solvent CH(3)CN within the naphthanoimidazolate or benzoimidazolate-built cavity through C-H...pi hydrogen bonds in the crystal state. The structures are characterized by elemental analysis, (1)H NMR, ESI-MS, and in the cases of 4a, 11, 13, and 14a by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.
