The carbon isotopic compositions of soil organic matter (SOM) and total carbonate (TC) in Xifeng loess-paleosol sequence have been studied. The δ13CSOM values vary from -23.8‰ to -20.2‰, which are higher in interglacial than in glacial stages. Contrary to δ13CSOM values, the δ13CTC values vary from -8.5‰ to -3.6‰ and are lower in interglacial than in glacial stages. The differences (Δδ13C) between the δ13CS0M and δ13CTC values vary from 14.1‰ to 19.4‰. Our results from the Xifeng loess-paleosol sequence indicate that the Δδ13C values represent the ratio of primary carbonate (PC) to secondary carbonate (SC). The Δδ13C values were high in the loess stages, and the maximal PC-to-SC ratio can reach 6:4. But in the paleosol stages, the Δδ13C values were low, with a small proportion of PC. The Δδ13C values in loess-paleosol sequence also indicate the contributions of the dust to the loess sediment in the Chinese Loess Plateau because the dust contains the PC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As prominent abrupt climatic events during the last deglaciation and the early Holocene, the Younger Dryas (YD) and the 8.2 ka events have been intensely discussed to reveal the relationship between their phases and intensities, and their underlying mechanisms based on massive marine and terrestrial archives. However, the related paleoclimate records with sufficient resolution and/or precise age constraints from the Southern Hemisphere, especially East Africa, are relatively sparse, hindering our comprehensive understanding about the phases of these two events. Here, we provide a precisely dated record of an aragonite-calcite stalagmite covering 11.3–13.5 ka BP from northwest Madagascar to unravel the arid conditions during the YD, in contrast to the pluvial conditions in the 8.2 ka event that has been evidenced before. Changes in austral summer precipitation related to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) have always been interpreted to be the primary means of controlling regional rainfall amounts and thus the δ18O variations in stalagmite. However, ITCZ's meridional migration alone is not enough to interpret the opposite hydroclimatic conditions during the YD and the 8.2 ka events in northwest Madagascar. The variation in convection intensity within the ITCZ combined with the rainfall dipole mode in East Africa, and the redistribution of the duration of the ITCZ's presence at different latitudes might be responsible for this phenomenon. The Marine Isotope Stage (MIS5e) is characterized by a warmer climate than that of the pre-industrial period, and serves as an analog for the Current Warm Period (CWP). However, uncertainties persist regarding its climatic stability. Here, we retrieved a stalagmite (WXB075) from Wanxiang Cave in the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, and employed absolute 230Th dating and relative annual layer data to establish a high-precision chronological framework for reconstructing the history of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) and environmental evolution during early MIS5e with multiple proxies. The findings indicate that the annually laminated stalagmite was formed during Cooling Event 27 (C27). The deposition of WXB075 experienced a hiatus (∼125.58 ka BP) due to a significant cooling event in the North Atlantic, which may be linked to the unstable climate in the Northern Hemisphere. Additionally, the impact of meltwater discharge in high northern latitudes results in a two-phase evolution of the ASM, i.e., an initial weaker stage followed by a gradual increase (with the exception of deposition hiatus). The climatic instability of ASM is generally characterized by a quasi-60 year cycle that affects vegetation conditions, biological productivity, and karst hydroclimate dynamics. However, the increase in meltwater and decrease in temperature in the Northern Hemisphere have led to a weakened ASM and subsequent reduction in precipitation. Consequently, vegetation degradation above the cave has occurred along with a slowdown of karst hydroclimate. The vegetation conditions, organic matter content, and wet/drought of the karst hydroclimate were affected by both the large-scale monsoon circulation and local environment during extreme weakening (strengthening) of the monsoon when high-frequency climatic events of ASM occurred. A comparison of δ18O records between early MIS5e and the past 2000 years reveals that the climate during early MIS5e differed significantly from that of CWP, Medieval Warm Period (MWP), and Dark Age Cold Period (DACP) but was similar to Little Ice Age (LIA). Comparison with other geological records from the Northern Hemisphere indicates that climate instability was a widespread phenomenon during MIS5e. The power spectrum analysis of WXB075 δ18O reveals significant quasi-60 and 35 a cycles during the early MIS5e, which is consistent with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). The comprehensive results demonstrate that the ASM in the early MIS5e was closely linked to solar activity, Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) position, and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The 8.2 ka event has been extensively studied, whereas its structure is ambiguous in North China. Here we present a high‐resolution (∼1 year) δ18O record from annual laminated speleothem from Beijing to characterize the detailed variability across this event in North China. Our record indicates a dry 8.2 ka event spanning 8.254–8.107 ka BP with a two‐stage structure superimposed by three prominent high δ18O excursions. The identical structure of speleothem δ18O records between North and central China during the event suggests a common forcing/response in East China, whereas the progressively increased offset between their average values may reflect changes in moisture source or rainout effect. A close comparison with the Greenland ice core records suggests a strong linear response of the Asian summer monsoon to the North Atlantic climate changes across the early and middle stages of the event, but a different mechanism in the termination processes. Since the Beijing speleothem δ18O, a proxy of the precipitation δ18O, is sensitive to the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variations, it allows us to establish precise timing and structure of the 8.2 ka event and estimate the cause of it. Our new speleothem δ18O record from Beijing reveals a two‐stage structure superimposed by three "V‐shape" excursions during the event and almost exactly covaries with another published speleothem record from central China, suggesting coherent climate changes over the east ASM domain in response to the same forcing. The gradually increased offset between them probably results from the changed atmospheric circulations. Our results suggest a fast climatic signal propagation from the North Atlantic to the ASM domain during the early and middle 8.2 ka event, and another forcing mechanism in the termination processes. Abstract: The isotopic composition of total organic carbon (TOC) in loess deposits has been widely used to reconstruct palaeovegetation and palaeoclimate for terrestrial ecosystems. The possible significance of the distribution and contribution of organic carbon from dust source regions to loess TOC remains unclear, but may potentially affect interpretation of stable carbon isotope distributions in loess records with respect to local vegetation. Two loess profiles from arid areas in China with sparse vegetation coverage have been investigated. After removing the surface loess affected by recent farming, we detected a narrow range of carbon isotope (δ13C) values from −21.4‰ to −20‰ in the Lanzhou area and from −21.5‰ to −19.7‰ in the Xining area. The values are inconsistent with that of the established vegetation in these areas, where C3 plants are dominant. In contrast, the δ13C values of the loess TOC closely resemble those from dust sources. Together with data from loess TOC and magnetic susceptibility, we demonstrate that the isotopic composition of loess TOC in arid areas was largely controlled by the carbon isotope composition of the dust source, with only a minor contribution from local native vegetation. The results suggest that background carbon isotopic signals should be taken into account when interpreting carbon isotope compositions of loess deposits in arid areas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We have investigated carbon isotopic compositions of four plant genus/species, Bothriochloa ischaemum (C4), Stipa bungeana (C3), Lespedeza sp. (C3) and Heteropappus less (C3), along a precipitation gradient in northwest China in order to assess the impact of water availability on the carbon isotopic discrimination against 13C during carbon assimilation in this area. This information is necessary for reconstruction of paleovegetation, particularly paleo-C3/C4 plant ratios using δ13C value of organic matter in loess and paleosols in the Chinese Loess Plateau. The δ13C of C3 plants, as a group, exhibits a negative correlation with the annual precipitation amount with a total change and sensitivity of 5‰ and −1.1‰/100 mm, respectively, for the precipitation range from 200 to 700 mm. The C4 grass, B. ischaemum responds to aridity by decreasing 1.7‰ for over the precipitation range from 350 to 700 mm; the plant δ13C is significantly correlated with annual precipitation with a slope −0.61‰/100 mm. This result implies that without considering the effect of water availability on the plant δ13C values, reconstruction of percent C4 vegetation during the last glaciation can be overestimated by about a factor of two. The objective of this work is to propose a more effective way to prepare an in-house CO2 with known triple oxygen isotope compositions. The major experimental steps include: (1) the O2 is combusted to CO2 on a graphite rod at 750 °C with Pt-catalyst for 3–4 min; and (2) converted CO2 is subsequently purified by two cryogenic traps. The results show high reproducibility of δ13C and δ18O values of the converted CO2 within 0.010–0.020 ‰ and 0.006–0.010 ‰ (1σ, SD), and the identical δ18O value within error with that of the original O2. Additionally, we have measured the triple oxygen isotope compositions of converted CO2 using an O2–CO2 Pt-catalyzed oxygen-isotope equilibration method. The measured δ17O values of CO2 show high reproducibility within 0.006 ‰ (1σ, SD), and are identical within error with the original O2 as well. Notably, our experiments also found that the O2 with heavier oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O > 40 ‰, VSMOW) might have a lesser conversion efficiency, and this effect, combined with the lighter isotope preferential fractionations during the reaction processes of O2 to CO and CO to CO2, may explain the observed lower 17O/16O and 18O/16O ratios of the converted CO2 relative to the original O2. The abrupt climate event Younger Dryas (YD) has been extensively studied; however, its structure is still poorly understood. Climate in northeastern Brazil is very sensitive to the latitudinal position of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) associated with abrupt climate change in the Atlantic. Here, we report changes in the ITCZ position within the YD by using precise speleothem multiproxy records from northeastern Brazil. We provide evidence for a gradual northward migration of the ITCZ preceding poleward shifts of the westerlies and the polar front in northern high latitudes within the YD. This can be attributed to gradual increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration as a consequence of the weakening Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). We suggest that a persistent increase in atmospheric CO2 might have triggered a resumption of the AMOC and reorganization of the atmosphere circulation in the Atlantic during the mid‐YD. We present triple oxygen isotope data from speleothems obtained by an O 2 -CO 2 Pt-catalyzed oxygen-isotope equilibration method. The high precision (9 per meg or better, 1σ SD) of our new speleothem Δ17O (carbonate 17O anomaly) data is sufficient to resolve subtle hydroclimatic signals. In addition, we determined triple oxygen isotope fractionation factors through two sets of modern paired carbonate-dripwater samples collected at a temperature of 17 ± 1 °C, which is prerequisite to the calculation of triple oxygen isotope compositions of parent meteoric waters at cave sites from speleothem proxy data. Based on this calibration, we back calculated triple oxygen isotope compositions of parent waters across well-characterized climate transitions using speleothem proxy data from three regions. Resulting oxygen-isotope data closely track the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL), providing a preliminary validation of the method. Our speleothem Δ17O data indicate a 21 per meg difference between Marine Isotope Stage 5d and 5e in samples from Central Asia and a 15 per meg difference between the Middle Holocene and Last Glacial Maximum in samples from the eastern Mediterranean, suggesting a shift in moisture source and/or fractionation history. Unexpectedly, there were no measurable Δ17O differences between glacial and interglacial samples from both the South American (western Amazon) and Asian (southern China) monsoon domains, implying consistent moisture-source conditions across glacial and interglacial cycles, at least in terms of relative humidity. Remarkably, Δ17O values from the western Amazonian samples are significantly higher (∼20 per meg) than those from Asian monsoon regions, suggesting lower relative humidity along moisture trajectories in the western Amazon during the Middle Holocene and Last Glacial period. Similarly, Δ17O values of the eastern Mediterranean samples are significantly higher (19–55 per meg) than those of coeval samples from Central Asia, implying different hydrological environments or moisture sources despite being in the same westerly circulation domain. Gas hydrates represent a huge reservoir of methane in marine sediments, prone to dissociation in response to environmental changes. There is consensus that past events of gas hydrate dissociation in the marine environment mainly occurred during periods of low sea level. Here, we report geochemical data for 2‐m‐thick layers of seep carbonate collected from a hydrate‐bearing drill core from ~800‐m water depth in the northern South China Sea. The aragonite‐rich carbonates reveal positive δ18O values, confirming a genetic link with gas hydrate dissociation. Uranium‐thorium dating of seep carbonates indicates that gas hydrates at the study site dissociated between 133,300 and 112,700 years BP, hence coinciding with the Last Interglacial (MIS 5e) sea‐level highstand. We put forward the concept that a climate‐driven increase in temperature was responsible for a period of pronounced gas hydrate dissociation. Plain Language Summary: The gas hydrate reservoir is a dynamically changing system extremely susceptible to variations of seafloor temperature and pressure. Therefore, gas hydrate dissociation and subsequent methane seepage frequently occur during times of global climate change, especially during sea‐level lowstands with reduced seabed pressure. However, this conclusion was mainly based on dating of seep carbonates sampled from the seabed. As a consequence, one cannot exclude that previous results have been compromised by a sampling bias since seafloor samples are easier to collect. Authigenic seep carbonates from drill cores represent a continuous record of gas hydrate dynamics. Our uranium‐thorium dating of seep carbonate from drill cores provides a unique example of the effects of temperature and pressure on the stability of the hydrate system in the Dongsha area, northern South China Sea (SCS), during the last interglacial stage (MIS 5e, about 130,000 years BP). Representing the most similar and most contemporary analog to the current interglacial, the study of a methane release event in the SCS during MIS 5e will shed light on the expected trend of methane release events in the future, while providing insight into the response of low‐latitude oceans to climate change. Stalagmite is one kind of secondary carbonates formed in limestone caves (speleothem). After cave water droplets containing Ca2+ and H C O 3 − drip onto floor, carbonate in the water might become supersaturated due to CO2 degassing under certain conditions, resulting in the formation of stalagmite in a process year after year. Stalagmite is one of important geological archives for paleoclimate research. The advantages include wide spatial distribution, suitable for U-Th and U-Pb dating, enriched in climate proxies, continuity, long time span, comparability and lower sampling cost etc. These factors have propelled stalagmite paleoclimate research to the forefront of global paleoclimatology with an irreplaceable role. The stalagmite paleoclimate study started in the western countries, mainly in Europe and America in 1960s–1970s, while the relevant research in China was progressively developed in the 1980s–1990s after the Reform and Opening up. Although there was a huge gap between the overall research level in China and western countries, a solid research foundation, as well as a number of talent teams were established during the period. In the 21st century, starting from the publication of stalagmite records from Hulu Cave in Nanjing in 2001, the stalagmite paleoclimate research in China has ushered in a flourishing development and a real leap on the basis of international cooperation, resulting in significant international impacts. The landmark achievements, including establishment of the world's longest (640000 years) East Asian monsoon stalagmite record, as well as the longest Indian monsoon (280000 years), South American monsoon (250000 years), North American westerly climate (330000 years), Central Asian westerly climate (135000 years), and northwestern China westerly climate (500000 years), have laid a milestone in the paleoclimate study in these climate domains. Importantly, these stalagmite records have revealed the relationship of Asian monsoon variations with solar insolation climate change in polar regions, and the South American monsoon changes on orbital-suborbital timescales, which have provided new geological observations for the development of orbital-suborbital climate theory; elaborated coupling and differentiation relationships between the Asian monsoon and the westerly climate; reconstructed the history of Asian monsoon changes in the Holocene in detail, and thus the hydrological and climate variances behind Chinese and Indian civilization-cultural evolutions. Furthermore, a large number of high-resolution stalagmite records over the past 2000 years have been reconstructed, which are important for understanding short-term climate variability and magnitude, events, cycles, and thus the future climate projection. The achievements have also involved the improvements of a number of important techniques, such as U-Th dating method, the establishments of various hydroclimatic proxies, as well as the contributions to the reconstruction of the atmosphere 14C variation history over the past ∼54000 years. On the perspective of the future, the Chinese stalagmite community should continue to develop key techniques, further clarify the hydroclimatic significance of stalagmite proxies, impel the integration of related disciplines, and concentrate on key scientific issues in global climate change and major social demands. The nature and controls of orbital-scale climate variability in North America (NA) are subjects of ongoing debates. On the basis of previous cave records from Southwestern United States, two mutually incompatible hypotheses have been proposed. One links NA orbital-scale climate variability to Northern Hemisphere (NH) summer insolation forcing in a manner analogous to low-latitude monsoon systems, while the other suggests that it is not causally tied to either changes in global ice-volumes or NH summer insolation. Here we report new cave oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) records from Buckeye Creek Cave (BCC), West Virginia, east central North America, covering most of the past three glacial-interglacial periods (∼335 to 45 kyr ago). The BCC δ 18 O record exhibits a strong precession-band cycle, which is in-phase with changes in global ice-volumes (i.e., sea level), sea surface temperatures in the NE Gulf of Mexico and is consistent with the results from published cave records from Nevada and Devils Hole. As with global ice-volume, the BCC records lag summer insolation at 65°N by ∼5000 yr, which stands in contrast with records of low-latitude monsoon variability in South America and Asia, which are in phase and out-of-phase with changes in summer insolation and sea level, respectively. Provided the degree of lag to summer insolation provides a measure of competing forcing from global ice-volume and summer insolation, our data suggest that NA orbital-scale climate variability is dominantly driven by ice-volume forcing. In addition, the sea surface temperatures in the NE Gulf of Mexico and changes in northern high-latitude cryosphere may be also important in explaining the unusually low δ 18 O values at times of the intermediate ice-volume periods in BCC and other NA cave records. A full‐spectrum characterization of past interglacial climate is a necessary prerequisite for the detection and attribution of climate changes during the current interglacial. Here we present a speleothem record of Asian summer monsoon (ASM) during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11 interglacial (MIS 11c), from Yongxing cave, China. The record's unprecedented chronologic constraints and decadal‐scale temporal resolution allow a precise and direct comparison of ASM between the MIS 11c and the Holocene. Our data suggest that orbital‐centennial patterns of ASM were remarkably similar during both interglacial, including their pacing and structure. Notably, a multi‐millennial stronger monsoon late in MIS 11c, the "Late‐MIS 11c shift," is similar to the Late Holocene strengthening of the ASM, the "2‐Kyr shift." Thus, the multicentennial ASM weakening at the end of the Late‐MIS 11c shift could imply that the current century‐long ASM waning trend may persist into the future, if only natural forcings are considered. Plain Language Summary: The interglacial of Marine Isotope Stage 11 (MIS 11c) is generally considered to be an appropriate natural climate analog to the current interglacial, the Holocene. A new speleothem oxygen‐isotope (δ18O) record is reconstructed to characterize Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variability across MIS 11c on a wide range of timescales. This new record has an unprecedented high resolution (~11 years) and precise chronology constrained by 230Th dating and annual band counting. It thus allows for the first time a precise comparison of ASM variability between MIS 11c and the Holocene. We find that the observed pattern of decreasing ASM strength during the late portion of MIS 11c was interrupted by a multi‐millennial period of stronger monsoon (the "Late‐MIS 11c shift"), which is similar to the Late Holocene increase in ASM strength (the "2‐Kyr shift"), which also occurred against a backdrop of long‐term decline in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation. Notably, the Late‐MIS 11c shift was terminated by a multicentennial ASM weakening trend, thus suggesting that the current century‐long ASM waning trend could persist into the future, provided that the anthropogenic forcing does not supersede the natural variability. The difficulty in constraining the large-scale Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variability in the Chinese monsoon region (CMR) during glacial Termination II lies in our limited knowledge of the western part, primarily due to sparse paleoclimate records. To get a better picture of the ASM during Termination II, we examined a precisely dated stalagmite δ18O record between 133.1 and 127.0 kyr B.P. from Wanxiang Cave located at the ASM's northern edge in western China. In combination with published δ18O data from this cave, we have identified the 'Weak Monsoon Interval' (WMI) in the Wanxiang δ18O record and confirmed that the Heinrich 11 cold event in the North Atlantic caused the weakened ASM over the CMR via reorganization of the large-scale ocean-atmospheric circulation. However, the post-WMI change in δ18O is gradual, in contrast with the abrupt shift shown in the other cave records from southern and northeastern China. The rapid northward migration of the westerly jet relative to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is probably responsible for this discrepancy. This northward-positioned westerly jet prevented the more 18O-depleted moisture from the Indian Ocean from reaching the study site. Simultaneously, it facilitated the earlier northward movement of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) rainband that carries positive precipitation δ18O to obscure the abrupt decrease in our δ18O record. After the onset of the last interglacial, no obvious Younger Dryas (YD)-like event was recorded in Wanxiang Cave. This result is consistent with most stalagmite δ18O records in the CMR and further suggests a minimal impact of the YD-like event on ASM variabilities. The relatively large amplitude of δ18O variations observed in Wanxiang Cave between the late penultimate glacial and the last interglacial corresponds to a dominant control of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM), whereas smaller δ18O amplitudes were recorded in cave sites mainly under the influence of both ISM and EASM. Cave oxygen isotope (δ18O) records have been important in characterizing Asian Monsoon variations on a wide range of timescales. The climatic significance of the δ18O proxy of the cave records and its main control factors, however, remain hotly debated, especially with respect to annual to decadal timescales. In particular, while the spatial and intensity variations of the Western Pacific Subtropical High (WPSH) affects the East Asian Monsoon remarkably on annual to decadal timescales, cave records up to present do not show clear evidence of the WPSH signal. Here we report a new high-resolution (average of 1.5 months) δ18O record from Dongshiya Cave, Qinling Mountain, central China. The region is highly sensitive to variations in the position of the WPSH western boundary, which in turn regulates the alternation of dominant moisture sources between the proximal Pacific Ocean and the remote Indian Ocean. Together with another cave record near the WPSH western boundary, we established a new index to reconstruct variations of the WPSH western boundary over the past 200 years. Paired measurements of 14C/12C and 230Th ages from two Hulu Cave stalagmites complete a precise record of atmospheric 14C covering the full range of the 14C dating method (~54,000 years). Over the last glacial period, atmospheric 14C/12C ranges from values similar to modern values to values 1.70 times higher (42,000 to 39,000 years ago). The latter correspond to 14C ages 5200 years less than calibrated ages and correlate with the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion followed by Heinrich Stadial 4. Millennial-scale variations are largely attributable to Earth’s magnetic field changes and in part to climate-related changes in the oceanic carbon cycle. The vast Indo-Gangetic Plain in South Asia has been home to some of the world's oldest civilizations, whose fortunes ebbed and flowed with time -- plausibly driven in part by shifts in the spatiotemporal patterns of the Indian summer monsoon rainfall. We use speleothem oxygen isotope records from North India to reconstruct the monsoon's variability on socially relevant time scales, allowing us to examine the history of civilization changes in the context of varying hydroclimatic conditions over the past 5700 years. Our data suggest that significant shifts in monsoon rainfall have occurred in concert with changes in the Northern Hemisphere temperatures and the discharges of the Himalayan rivers. The close temporal relationship between these large-scale hydroclimatic changes and the intervals marking the significant sociopolitical developments of the Indus Valley and Vedic civilizations suggests a plausible role of climate change in shaping the important chapters of the history of human civilization in the Indian subcontinent. Previous research has shown a strong persistence for direct teleconnections between the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and high northern latitude climate variability during the last glacial and deglaciation, in particular between monsoon weakening and a reduced Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). However, less attention has been paid to EASM strengthening as the AMOC was reinvigorated following peak Northern Hemisphere (NH) cooling. Moreover, climate model simulations have suggested a strong role for Antarctic meltwater discharge in modulating northward heat transport and hence NH warming, yet the degree to which Southern Hemisphere (SH) climate anomalies impacted the Asian monsoon region is still unclear. Here we present a new stalagmite oxygen-isotope record from the EASM affected region of central China, which documents two prominent stages of increased 18 O-depleted moisture delivery to the region through the transition from Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1) to the Bølling–Allerød (B–A) interstadial; this is in general agreement with the other monsoonal records from both NH and SH mid to low latitudes. Through novel comparisons with a recent iceberg-rafted debris (IRD) record from the Southern Ocean, we propose that the two-stage EASM intensification observed in our speleothem records were linked with two massive Antarctic icesheet discharge (AID) events at ∼16.0 ka and ∼14.7 ka, immediately following the peak HS1 stadial event. Notably, the large increase in EASM intensity at the beginning of the HS1/B–A transition (∼16 ka) is relatively muted in the NH higher latitudes, and better aligns with the changes observed in the SH, indicating the Antarctic and Southern Ocean perturbations could have an active role in driving the initial EASM strengthening at this time. Indeed, Antarctic freshwater input to the Southern Ocean during these AID events would have cooled the surrounding surface waters and caused an expansion of sea ice, restricting the southern extent of the SH westerlies. Moreover, increased meltwater flux during IRD events would have freshened Antarctic Intermediate Water, leading to the increased formation of North Atlantic Deep Water and enhanced North Atlantic subsurface heat release, and causing a strengthening of the AMOC during the HS1-Bølling transition. The result of this sequence-of-events would have been warming in the North Atlantic whilst at the same time cooling in the Antarctic. The ensuing interhemispheric temperature gradient would have acted to push the ITCZ northward, weakening the Australian–Indonesian summer monsoon (AISM) whilst intensifying the EASM. Speleothem oxygen isotope (δ18O) constitutes one of key proxies to reconstruct the Indian and East Asian summer monsoon (ISM and EASM) hydroclimate history on a wide range of timescales. Here, we use three new well-dated speleothem δ18O records from Tianmen cave, in the south-central Tibetan Plateau (TP), together with previous records from the same cave, to reconstruct a composite Tianmen record spanning over the past 414,000 years. The Tianmen δ18O record follows Northern Hemisphere summer insolation (NHSI), broadly coherent with speleothem δ18O records from both ISM and EASM regimes. In comparison with previous model simulations and modern hydroclimate analyses, the Tianmen δ18O was interpreted primarily as a proxy indicating the ISM intensity. The Tianmen δ18O record comprises both high and low NHSI time periods, which reveals an exceptional large amplitude (∼14‰) of δ18O variations at the precession band, possibly resulted from a combination effect of precipitation amount, moisture source, transport pathway, high elevation and rainout. Besides, a broad consistency on orbital-scale variability among Tianmen δ18O, δ13C and trace element records is found, suggesting that the ISM intensity regulates the effective rainfall at the cave site as well. Notably, Tianmen speleothem growth occurred merely during warm-wet interglacial periods, even during low NHSI times near the precession maximum, and in contrast, hiatuses persistently occurred throughout cold-dry glacial periods. This pattern is similar to that found in travertine formations in the region, both suggesting that the interglacial temperature might be a prerequisite for speleothem/travertine formations in the region, while the strong ISM precipitation in turn provides a sufficient condition. Our new Tianmen record, combined with a large set of speleothem records from both Asian Westerlies and Asian monsoon domains, gives further evidence to reinforce a previous hypothesis: a consistent temporal pattern in the δ18O of precipitation on orbital and millennial scales over the vast Asian monsoon and Westerlies regimes. The Asian monsoon (AM) is an important atmosphere circulation system of the global climate system, acting as a bridge across high-northern latitude and tropic climates. However, dynamical origins of AM variations during the Holocene remain unclear. Here we present stable isotope records (δ 18 O and δ 13 C) of a Holocene stalagmite from Niu Cave, central China, to address the nature and causes of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) changes. Our δ 18 O record shows a gradual weakening of the EASM intensity from the middle to the late Holocene, corresponding with a decrease in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation and an enhancement of ENSO activity. The δ 13 C profile exhibits similar variability to δ 18 O record, suggesting that regional hydrological changes were primarily controlled by the large-scale summer monsoon circulation. Power spectrum analyses of δ 18 O and δ 13 C records show that the EASM intensity varies at a dominant periodicity of ~ 830 yr, probably correlated to an ENSO-like cycle. Furthermore, millennial-scale shifts in our records exhibit a strong correlation with that in ENSO proxies over the past 3000 years. The EASM-ENSO relationship may be related to the shifts in the mean position of Walker circulation and western North Pacific subtropical high. The Sansha Yongle Blue Hole (SYBH) is the deepest (301.19 m) blue hole known in the world and is a water-filled karst opening in the intertidal reef flats of the eastern Yongle Atoll, Xisha Islands, South China Sea. It is differentiated from the surrounding environment by its deep blue colour as observed when viewed from above. The SYBH exhibits extremely rare karst networks and speleothems and differs from the blue holes of the Bahamas and Bermuda, indicating a different development process. Here, we present the morphology and U Th ages of the SYBH, which document the evolution of the coastal cave over time. Morphology and lithostratigraphy indicate that the hole resulted from dissolution via ascending acidic water/gas followed by subsequent collapse. The adjacent volcanoes surrounding the eastern Yongle Atoll are the most likely source of these ascending fluids. U Th ages of the cemented carbonate sand underlying the entrance constrain an upper limit of the opening time of the SYBH to be up to 111.7 ± 9.5 kyr BP. Deeply submerged speleothems at −116 m determine the lower collapse time of the SYBH to be 29.16 ± 0.17 kyr BP. The SYBH probably formed due to the upward release of volcanogenic acid water/gas through low-lying unconsolidated carbonate sediments, followed by buoyant collapses due to a 40-m fall in the sea level during 31–29 kyr BP. As the sea level rose to −15 m in the early Holocene, corals grew in the cave opening since 8.58 kyr BP and surrounded the entrance for the SYBH. • SYBH may be dissolved by volcanic related ascending acidified gases or waters. • SYBH could collapse at about 29 kyr BP due to a rapid sea-level fall. • Optical U Th dating suggests Pleistocene eolianites in the Xisha Islands deposited during MIS 5. Large volumes of travertine deposits are preserved at hydrothermal spring sites on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Yet, most of these deposits are under-researched with respect to their diagenetic and depositional history and there is still very limited understanding of the tectonic and climatic influences on travertine precipitation in the arid high-altitude setting of Tibet. In this study, a detailed uranium-series dating campaign was carried out for the Qiusang travertine (~4270 m above sea level), southern Tibet that has been previously dated back to 486 thousand years ago (ka). Based on 42 new 230Th/U ages, combined with geomorphological and sedimentological investigations, several travertine zones were identified and distinct travertine depositional phases constrained: 11.7–6.8 ka and ~ 13.4 ka (zone 1), 128–122 ka (zone 2), ~193 ka (zone 3), ~292 ka and 324 ka (zone 4), >317 ka (zone 5), ca. 415 to 470 ka (zone 6) and ca. 419 to 445 ka (zone 7). Comparison of these depositional phases with local and regional proxy records suggests that travertine accumulation at Qiusang occurred during main interglacials when monsoon precipitation peaked on the TP. This coincidence, together with a sensitive response of Tibetan hydrothermal spring activity to meteoric recharge, implies that climate controls the precipitation of large travertine volumes on orbital timescales on the plateau. We propose that (i) tectonic activity is of subordinate importance and influences travertine precipitation on the TP only episodically and on significantly shorter (i.e. centennial to millennial) timescales related to the recurrence rates of large earthquakes and that (ii) intensive monsoonal-driven groundwater recharge is required on top of tectonic activity for generating volumetrically significant travertine accumulations. Because of the high precipitation rates typical for hydrothermal spring carbonates, we conclude that travertine deposits on the TP could be utilized as valuable high-resolution proxy records of peak monsoon conditions in the currently arid to semi-arid landscape. Furthermore, the Qiusang travertine zone 7 is terraced and the travertine layers adjusted to a paleo-riverbed elevation ~30 m above the current river, allowing us to constrain fluvial incision to ~0.07 m/ka for the south-central sector of the TP since the Mid-Pleistocene. High-resolution and precisely dated hydroclimate records in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) remain sparse beyond the Holocene, which hampers our ability to understand the hydroclimate variability in this important Indian summer monsoon (ISM) fringe area and its global teleconnection. Here we present 3-y resolution δ18O and δ13C records from a laminated stalagmite (RG-3) from Rige Cave in the southeastern TP, spanning the Younger Dryas (YD). The records allow us to precisely characterize the timing, structure, and particularly centennial-scale events within the YD, and probe the control factors of precipitation δ18O (δ18O p) in the ISM fringe area. On centennial–millennial timescales, the Rige δ18O record shows coherent pattern with the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) counterpart, combined with modeled δ18O p results and spatial analysis, suggesting that δ18O p in this part of the TP is largely controlled by the large-scale atmosphere circulation (or the ISM strength), and the altitude increase in the TP may not potentially result in an opposite δ18O p pattern at least in the monsoonal TP regime. We also found significant δ13C-δ18O covariation on the centennial timescale, suggesting a coincided ISM rainfall and biomass change during the YD. In the Rige records, one weak centennial-scale ISM event (namely the intra-Allerød cold period, IACP) and three strong centennial-scale ISM events within the YD (namely A1′-A2′-A3′) were prominent and occurred between ∼12,470 and 12,310 ± 14, ∼12,210–12,090 ± 12 and ∼12,010–11,920 ± 12 y BP (before present, where present = 1950 CE), respectively. Spectral analyses of Rige records also revealed a significant ∼200-y periodicity, which is nearly in-phase with observed centennial-scale variations of the North Atlantic temperature and mid-latitude westerly-jet during that time. Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the optimization and pathways of lignosulfonate biodegradation by a newly isolated lignin-degrading bacterial strain, Sphingobacterium sp. HY-H. The optimal conditions for lignosulfonate degradation capability were determined by Taguchi's orthogonal matrix method to be: initial pH, 7.0; temperature, 30 °C; and a lignosulfonate/nitrogen (as NH4Cl) mass ratio of 5. Under optimal conditions, the maximum lignosulfonate degradation capacity of strain HY-H was 31%. In order to characterize the changes in residual lignosulfonate and the metabolic products, FTIR spectra, functional groups, and elemental and GC–MS analysis were introduced. An examination of the data suggests a possible route of lignosulfonate degradation by strain HY-H was that lignosulfonate was first depolymerized to low-molecular-weight compounds; then the side chains of lignosulfonate were partially oxidized and further decarboxylated to produce carbon dioxide. If properly optimized and controlled, strain HY-H may play a role in the treatment of pulp and paper wastewater containing a high concentration of lignosulfonate, as well as in the lignocellulose breakdown for biofuel and chemicals production. Although the 8.2 ka event is a well-known globally documented abrupt climate event, its detailed expression in tropical southeastern Africa is poorly constrained. Here we present a high resolution and precisely dated record of the regional hydroclimatic variability between 8.5–7.5 ka BP from a polymorphic speleothem (ABC-1) from northwestern Madagascar. In combination with the exclusive recurrences of calcite layers (indicative of wetter conditions), the distinctly negative excursions in the ABC-1 δ18O record manifest a wet 8.2 ka event that spanned from 8.230 to 8.053 ka BP. The event is characterized by the replacement of shorter-term (interannual to interdecadal) δ18O-δ13C coherence with the longer-term (multidecadal to centennial) coherence, suggesting a stable and well-developed forest system during the 8.2 ka event. Our data reveal a two-stage structure of the 8.2 ka event, which is superimposed with two brief pluvial episodes in each stage. The widely documented two peaks/troughs during Stage-I suggest rapid propagation of climate signal through atmospheric processes triggered initially by the freshwater forcing, whereas the divergent behaviors of the peaks/troughs in Stage-II in different climate systems may suggest a different forcing. • Exclusively episodic deposition of the calcite layers and lower speleothem δ18O manifest a wet 8.2 ka event in NW Madagascar. • The 8.2 ka event in NW Madagascar exhibits a two-stage structure with each stage superimposed by two severe pluvial episodes. • The timescale variation of coherence between δ18O and δ13C indicates the resilience of the ecosystem to climate change. The expansion of plants using the C4 photosynthetic pathway is one of the most prominent changes in the global ecosystem during the Cenozoic Era. A significant late Miocene expansion is well documented. However, the existence and cause of subsequent expansions are still not clear, owing in part to the lack of long, continuous climate-vegetation records. Here we present two high-resolution carbon isotope time series, covering the past 7 m.y., derived from eolian deposits on the Chinese Loess Plateau. The data indicate three intervals of significant C4 plant expansions within the semiarid monsoonal region of East Asia (ca. 2.9-2.7 Ma, 1.3-0.9 Ma, and 0.6 Ma-present). These expansions covary with strengthened East Asian summer monsoon circulation. We conclude that in East Asia, large-scale late Miocene C4/C3 vegetation changes in semiarid areas have been primarily driven by warm seasonal precipitation and temperature variations associated with changes in monsoon circulation. Abstract: The natural abundance of C3 and C4 plants is affected by multiple environmental factors including temperature, moisture balance and atmospheric pCO2. The relative importance of these factors is a subject of considerable debate, and may vary in different natural ecosystems. Previous studies generally focus on single loess sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau, and conflicting conclusions on C4/C3 have been reached when studying carbon isotope ratios in carbonate and organic matter. In this paper we report a comprehensive carbon isotopic characterization of total organic carbon (TOC) and individual higher plant leaf waxes from five loess sequences spanning the last 35 ka from the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). The five coring sites encompass large gradients of annual mean temperature (9.2–13.9 °C) and precipitation (402–673 mm), allowing us to assess the controlling mechanisms on C4/C3 plant ratios. Glacial–interglacial sequences provide carbon isotope data for comparison with other climatic and environmental proxies such as lithology and magnetic susceptibility. Our results demonstrate that increased C4/C3 ratios are positively correlated with higher temperature and increased summer rainfall which characterize stronger summer monsoon in all five sites. We conclude C4 abundance increases from the last glacial to the Holocene in response to greater monsoon activity and that the C4 expression is suppressed in the cold and drier intervals. Abstract: Pleistocene vegetation history on the Chinese Loess Plateau has been traditionally investigated using palynological methods, and questions remain regarding whether an extensive broadleaf deciduous forest ever developed on the loess table under favorable climatic conditions. The authors have employed a C isotope approach to address this question by comparing δ13C values in soil organic matter from different loess ecological domains with known source vegetation to the C isotope values obtained from a paleosol section that can be dated back to 130 ka. The C isotopic compositions of modern soils from the loess table and the loess–desert transition gave δ13C values of −24.5‰ to −18.2‰ and −25.7‰ to −20.7‰, respectively. These C isotopic ratios are consistent with the standing modern vegetation that is dominated by a mixture of C3 and C4 plants and can be distinguished from that in the patchy forest areas where exclusive C3 trees yield a narrow δ13C value range from −26.9‰ to −25‰ (average −26.1‰). Obtained δ13C compositions from paleosols and loess sediments in the Lantian and the Luochuan profiles vary from −24‰ to −16.9‰, indicating a grass-dominated steppe with shifting C3 and C4 contributions controlled mainly by paleoclimatic changes during the late Pleistocene. The present results suggest no extensive forest coverage on the loess table during the past 130 ka even under the most suitable conditions for forest development. This conclusion supports the explanation of natural causes for the development of only patchy forests on the modern loess table and provides critical historical information toward the vegetation restoration project that is currently underway on the Chinese Loess Plateau. Stalagmite oxygen isotope (δ18O) record has been widely used in characterizing Asian Monsoon variations. In southwest (SW) China, although the stalagmite δ18O was usually suggested as a precipitation proxy, it remains a subject of debate. Here we present two replicated, high-precise-dated stalagmite δ18O records for the interval 1710–2003 AD from Yunnan province, SW China. The stalagmite δ18O shows no correlation with the local monsoon precipitation, but a significantly positive correlation with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index. It demonstrates that the stalagmite δ18O in SW China is most likely influenced by the atmospheric circulation associated with the PDO through the upstream depletion mechanism. During the warm (cold) PDO period, the deficit rainfall over India would make the δ18O of water vapor transporting to SW China less (more) negative due to the weaker Rayleigh distillation process, which would lead to the less (more) negative stalagmite δ18O. Consequently, the stalagmite δ18O in SW China is suitable to reconstruct the PDO variations. Conflicting reconstructions of Holocene variability of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) from speleothem versus other types of proxy records have yielded widely divergent estimates of its phase relationship with the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and Northern Hemisphere summer insolation (NHSI). This apparent discrepancy has been partly attributed to the uncertainties in the climatic representation of Chinese speleothem oxygen isotope (δ18O) records. Here we present a composite speleothem δ18O record of the last ∼14 kyr from Shennong Cave in southeastern China and model-simulated data of rainfall and meteoric δ18O over eastern China. Our synthesis of the proxy-model data suggests that the spatial patterns in both speleothem δ18O and paleo-rainfall over eastern China during the Holocene are diverse at orbital and multi-millennial scales. Our findings imply that: 1) speleothem δ18O in the EASM regime is largely controlled by the large-scale circulation and concomitant latitudinal shifts of the monsoon rain belt; notwithstanding the heterogeneous spatiotemporal pattern of Holocene rainfall as inferred from various proxy records, a coherent orbital-scale speleothem δ18O variability across most Asian monsoon regions (except southeastern China) indeed stems from the NHSI-forced changes in overall monsoon intensity; overall monsoon intensity is not equivalent to monsoon rainfall amount but a manifestation of the large-scale atmospheric circulation; 2) divergent phase relationships with NHSI between speleothem δ18O and other proxy records are consistent with—rather than contradictory to—the NHSI forcing mechanism. Speleothem δ18O and rainfall records reflect two different aspects of the monsoon dynamics. Sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (SD-AOM) is an important microbial process at methane seeps, which consumes most of the methane migrating from sediments and can lead to the formation of seep carbonate and pyrite. Geochemical proxies archived in seep carbonates have been long used to uncover the nature of seepage. Recently, the sulfur isotopic composition of enclosed pyrite shows ideal prospects for targeting the seepage dynamics, but it remains challenging due to a possible decoupled precipitation of carbonate and pyrite. In order to decipher the geochemical link between seep carbonates and enclosed pyrite, multiple geochemical proxies of both carbonate (major elements, rare earth elements, δ13C) and pyrite (contents and δ34S py) were analyzed from two seep sites of the northern South China Sea. Multiple carbonate phases were identified via X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, including microcrystalline aragonite and botryoidal aragonite from Haima seeps, and micritic high-magnesium calcite (HMC), weakly ordered dolomite and botryoidal aragonite from site TVG11. The δ13C values for carbonates from both sites exhibit very light carbon isotopic signatures (from −59.2 to −35.8‰), confirming that the carbon source is mainly derived from the oxidation of biogenic methane. For pyrite enclosed in carbonates, their contents and sulfur isotopic compositions (δ34S py) reveal generally positive correlations with Mg/Ca ratios, where HMC and dolomite show higher pyrite contents and δ34S py values, but microcrystalline aragonite and botryoidal aragonite display lower pyrite contents and negative δ34S py values. This is consistent with our knowledge that HMC and dolomite tend to precipitate at a deeper sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ) where the replenishment of seawater sulfate is limited, whereas microcrystalline aragonite and botryoidal aragonite tend to form at shallow SMTZ with enhanced seawater sulfate supplement. Thus, the δ34S values of pore water sulfate greatly affect the resulting sulfur isotopic composition of pyrite, i.e., the higher δ34S py values in HMC and dolomite are attributed to the 34S enrichment in pore water sulfate at deeper SMTZ. This is supported by SIMS results that pyrite entrapped in botryoidal aragonite displays lower δ34S SIMS values than those in HMC. Our results suggest that geochemical proxies archived in both carbonate and pyrite point to the similar sedimentary environments, suggesting an intrinsic link between these two archives in our study sites. • Multiple carbonate phases were identified from the studied seep carbonates. • High-magnesium calcite (HMC) and dolomite show higher pyrite contents and δ34S py values comparing to aragonite. • δ34S SIMS values in botryoidal aragonite and HMC are consistent with their bulk δ34S py , excluding later diagenetic effects. • The geochemical archives in seep carbonate and enclosed pyrite suggest their synchronous formation. Observations and models suggest a latitudinal redistribution of precipitation as a result of ongoing global climatic warming. However, the dynamic link between temperature and regional precipitation in the course of natural climatic variability during the current interglacial period remains unclear, especially in the monsoon regions of China. Here we present a reconstruction of a ∼5 year-resolution summer monsoon rainfall record for the past 3200 years, based on 622 pairs of δ18O and δ13C and 29 230Th dates from a stalagmite (Wu37) from Wulu Cave in southern China. A close similarity between the δ18O and δ13C records on centennial to decadal timescales suggests that calcite δ18O is most likely a proxy associated with monsoon precipitation. The record reveals that the Little Ice Age (650 - 100 yr B.P.) was a relatively humid period, with two centennial-scale wet events, compared with the Medieval Warm Period (1050 - 650 yr B.P.). In contrast with previous observations in India and northern China, monsoon precipitation variations indicated by our record and other cave records nearby were inversely related to changes in Northern Hemisphere (NH) temperature over the past two millennia, in particular to variations in the thermal gradient between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. This suggests that NH temperature has an important influence on summer precipitation in southern China, via the interhemispheric thermal gradient and land-ocean thermal contrast. In addition, we find that variations of monsoon rainfall in southern China on multi-centennial to centennial timescales are inversely correlated with observed rainfall in the core monsoon region of India and in the northern fringe of the Asian summer monsoon region in China. This spatial pattern of rainfall variability can be interpreted as a result of the migration of the intertropical convergence zone that is likely dominated by the interhemispheric thermal gradient via cross-equatorial airflows. • Increase of monsoon precipitation in southern China (SC) since the LIA. • Anti-phase relationship between SC precipitation and NH temperature. • A negative correlation between precipitation in SC and India, northern China. • A direct control of NH temperature on the shifts of the ITCZ rainbelt. The extent to which climate variability in Central Asia is causally linked to large-scale changes in the Asian monsoon on varying timescales remains a longstanding question. Here we present precisely dated high-resolution speleothem oxygen-carbon isotope and trace element records of Central Asia's hydroclimate variability from Tonnel'naya cave, Uzbekistan, and Kesang cave, western China. On orbital timescales, the supra-regional climate variance, inferred from our oxygen isotope records, exhibits a precessional rhythm, punctuated by millennial-scale abrupt climate events, suggesting a close coupling with the Asian monsoon. However, the local hydroclimatic variability at both cave sites, inferred from carbon isotope and trace element records, shows climate variations that are distinctly different from their supra-regional modes. Particularly, hydroclimatic changes in both Tonnel'naya and Kesang areas during the Holocene lag behind the supra-regional climate variability by several thousand years. These observations may reconcile the apparent out-of-phase hydroclimatic variability, inferred from the Holocene lake proxy records, between Westerly Central Asia and Monsoon Asia.
