Life in today&rsquo, s world is characterized by complexity and rapid change. Twenty-first century skills and especially mathematical understanding are supposed to crucially contribute to meeting the demands of our world since mathematics offers strategies to structure or simplify complex problems. An open question is which teaching practices are appropriate to provide all students with such skills and to broaden the participation of underprivileged students. The present article explores these aspects by focusing on complex tasks, a practice that can be considered highly accepted in the context of mathematics education all over the world. We will concentrate on the perspective of the German mathematics education community as the foundation of our considerations. Based on an analytical investigation of mathematical literacy and twenty-first century skills (such as creativity, critical thinking, or problem-solving), we will address central ideas and characteristics of complex mathematical tasks. To complement the analytical approach, we will illustrate their characteristics as well as possible intersections with twenty-first century skills by presenting an elementary school teaching experiment. Finally, we will critically discuss the potentials and pitfalls of complex mathematical tasks from an abstract perspective and conclude by debating practical consequences for organizing mathematical learning-teaching-processes.

This paper addresses teachers’ corporeality and its influence on the structuring of mathematics classroom interaction. The present contribution explores the way a teacher’s bodily activity is implicated in the (re)production of social inequality, and challenges the assumption that the teaching and learning of mathematics is primarily a linguistic and semiotic accomplishment. I argue that the teacher’s body is an active force in the formation of mathematically ‘able’ and ‘less able’ students. Drawing on the work of Bernstein (Pedagogy, symbolic control, and identity: Theory, research, critique (Revised Edition), Rowman & Littlefield, Lanham, 2000) and his sociological theory of pedagogy, and expanding his tools to address corporeal factors, I show how students are positioned as high-performing within structures of classroom interaction. Video data from classroom interaction is used to track differences in how teachers reveal and conceal structural peculiarities of school mathematics. Comparing the interaction of different teachers illustrates the role that corporeality plays in establishing distinctive orientations to meaning-making in the mathematics classroom.

Der folgende Beitrag schildert die Befunde der Evaluation eines ungewohnlichen Schulversuchs, in welchem von 2010 bis 2017 eine Berliner Grundschule darum bemuht war, durch Einrichtung von Spezialklassen fur Kinder mit hoher Kompetenz in der deutschen Bildungssprache gezielt Eltern mit einem hohen Aspirationsniveau anzuwerben und somit in der Gesamtschulerschaft eine hohere Heterogenitat bezogen auf Sprachkompetenz und Bildungshintergrund zu erzielen.

In this contribution, we seek to empirically illustrate aspects of implicit pedagogic practices as described in the sociological work of Basil Bernstein. We attempt to approach origins of such practices in mathematics classrooms by analysing a classroom situation that deals with ‘realistic’ items. By focusing on the teacher’s perspective towards the subject, we elaborate a relation between (the teacher’s) implicit transmission practices in school and assumed transmission practices in the academic pedagogical field, wherein the teacher can be regarded as participating as a learner. This leads us to regard teachers as acquirers themselves in a broader view and to discuss their opportunities to acquire the knowledge necessary to introduce their students to the specialties of the pedagogic discourse.

En els ultims 20 anys ha augmentat l'atencio dispensada a les desigualtats socials en els assoliments en matematiques. Les perspectives microsociologiques en les investigacions sobre educacio matematica apunten a les particularitats de la cultura de l'aula i als patrons, pero tambe a les contingencies, prevalents en la construccio del significat a l'aula de matematiques. Per tal de generar una sociologia de la instruccio matematica, l'enfocament empiric de la nostra investigacio es dirigeix cap a aquests patrons microsociologics d'interaccio a l'aula relacionats amb la construccio d'una jerarquia d'assoliments en les matematiques escolars. L'aplicacio del marc teoric de Basil Bernstein resulta util a l'hora d'explorar aquests patrons d'interaccio. Degut al nostre interes en l'elaboracio d'aquest marc, el proposit d'aquest article es doble: com a resultat del nostre estudi empiric presentarem, en primer lloc, una llista de mecanismes d'interaccio que afecten l'estratificacio dels assoliments en matematiques dels estudiants. Posteriorment reflexionarem sobre els limits de la teoria de Bernstein que percebem en el nostre treball i les expectatives de teoritzacio i investigacio addicionals. D'aquesta manera, centrarem el nostre enfocament en la corporalitat, normativitat i drets pedagogics, mostrant aixi el seu impacte, que encara esta, en gran mesura, desates.

This introductory chapter builds on the assumption that the sociopolitical dimensions of mathematics education have been gradually recognised as an important part of mathematics education research. We problematise the process of institutionalising these dimensions as a firm strand of mathematics education research just as “philosophy of mathematics (education)”, “history of mathematics (education)”, “modelling and applications” or “geometry”. This leads us to identify and conceptualise “disorder” as the foundation of the sociopolitical dimensions and accordingly to propose a shift from focussing diversity towards focussing disorder. Finally, we illustrate how the chapters of this book contribute to such an alternative self-conception of sociopolitical research in mathematics education.

Die vorliegende Arbeit versteht sich als qualitative bildungssoziologische Unterrichtsforschung. Als klassisches Thema der soziologisch orientierten Bildungsforschung stellt sich der Zusammenhang von Bildung und sozialer Ungleichheit dar, wobei Fragen nach der Reproduktion gesellschaftlicher Strukturen im und durch das Bildungssystem sowie in und durch Bildungsinstitutionen in den Blick genommen werden. Wahrend im Bereich quantitativer Forschung untersucht wird, welche numerischen Korrelationen zwischen sozialem Hintergrund und Bildungserfolg vorliegen, stellt sich die qualitative Forschung eher Fragen nach der Art und Weise der Konstituierung dieses Zusammenhangs sowie nach dessen Grunden.

Unseres Erachtens ist es fur eine am schulischen Lernen interessierte padagogische Forschung wesentlich produktiver, […] am empirischen Fall der unterschiedlichen Lehr-/ Lernarrangements von Unterricht zu klaren, wie mit tradierten – oder auch innovativen – ‚sozialen Konstruktionen’ kollektive Lernprozesse realisiert, aber auch systematisch erschwert oder gar verhindert werden. Provokativ gesprochen: Wenn Schule als Lernorganisation in Schwierigkeiten gerat oder gar scheitert, dann muss aus padagogischer Perspektive als erstes geklart werden, was sie selbst durch ihre lokale Organisationspraxis des Lernens dazu beitragt. (Wiesemann & Amann, 2002, S. 155).

Im vorigen Kapitel wurde bereits angedeutet, dass der Explizierungsanspruch vor allem auf relevante und bedeutungstragende Unterrichtsstrukturen zielt. An dieser Stelle werden zunachst bereits existierende Theorien, Annahmen und (padagogische) Konzepte zur Thematik vorgestellt sowie deren zentrale Momente zu Explizierungsprozessen herausgearbeitet, um diese in die Entwicklung des Modells zu Explizierungsprozessen im Mathematikunterricht einzubinden. Neben der Analyse der wesentlichen Elemente erfolgt ein Vergleich dieser, um zu eruieren, inwiefern die Konzepte miteinander korrelieren, aber auch, wie sie voneinander abgegrenzt werden konnen.
