Abstract Background Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cytology results from 1 lung might not be representative of both lungs. Objectives To determine whether the lung site sampled would influence the horse's BAL cytology profile, and if a pooled BAL sample would be superior with regard to BAL cytology diagnosis in a cohort of healthy and subclinical asthmatic warmblood horses. Animals Fifty‐nine horses in 2021 and 70 horses in 2022, the follow‐up included 53 of the same in each year. Methods A cross‐sectional study with follow‐up included BAL cytology samples from individual lungs and from pooled BAL samples. The BAL samples were enumerated and differential cell count were applied to categorize the horses as control or with airway inflammation (AI). The article is devoted to the description of the work of teachers of the Russian Language Department of MGIMO on the development of professional competence of foreign students. The authors describe some methods of active learning such as business games and student conferences. Business games allows teachers to solve the following tasks: activation of the studied lexical and grammatical material, the development of new vocabulary, syntactic constructions, norms of communicative behavior; training in the construction of monological speech and dialogue; motivation of students to increase their linguistic and cultural knowledge. Participation in student conferences helps to strengthen motivation for a more in-depth study of the Russian language, increase the level of education of students, proves the need for independent work. The article analyzes the experience of holding business games, conferences and the UN Model in MGIMO.

Abstract. Case:. A 51-year-old woman with an infected left humeral shaft recalcitrant nonunion presented 3 years after initial injury. This case report focuses on the staged treatment of a 17-centimeter (cm) humeral shaft nonunion with the induced membrane technique (IMT) using a unique fixation construct of dual locked plating around a humeral nail to provide long-lasting fixation and allow for bone graft consolidation. Conclusion:. Large segmental bone loss of the humerus can be treated with the IMT using nail-plate fixation constructs that allow for early mobilization, increased time for bone graft consolidation before hardware failure, and less frequent follow-up.

Purpose: Electric scooters (e-scooters) have become an increasingly popular mode of public transportation in recent years. As the incidence of related injuries rises, it is important to understand specific fracture patterns unique to e-scooters and electric bikes (e-bikes) to help guide management. The purpose of this study was to review the prevalence and describe specific fracture patterns of e-scooter and e-bike related injuries at the busiest level 1 trauma center in the borough of Manhattan. Methods: Chart review to determine mechanism of injury was performed on all patients for whom an orthopedic consult was requested from 1/1/2021 to 12/31/2021. All patients whose injuries were sustained due to an e-scooter or e-bike were further reviewed for demographics, injury characteristics including fracture pattern, and definitive injury management. Any patients who had an orthopedic consult placed for a reason other than an acute injury were excluded. Descriptive statistics are reported as frequency (percentage) for categorical variables and means for continuous variables. Results: Of the 1815 orthopedic consults requested, 1357 (74.8%) were for acute injury management. Of those with acute injuries, 119 (8.8%) sustained 136 e-scooter or e-bike related injuries. There were 92 (77.3%) males at an average age of (33.8 ± 15.7) years. Approximately one-fifth of all patients presented in June 2021 (26, 21.8%). There was a 9.2% rate of open fractures. The 136 injuries were evenly split between the upper and lower extremities, with 57 (47.9%) upper extremity, 57 (47.9%) lower extremity injuries, and 5 (4.2%) concomitant upper and lower extremity injuries. The most common fracture patterns were ankle fractures (16, 11.7%), followed by tibial shaft (14, 10.2%), tibial plateau (13, 9.5%), and radial head fractures (11, 8.0%). There was a 33.3% incidence of associated posterior malleolar fractures in the spiral tibial shaft fractures, 31.0% of posterior malleolar involvement and 18.8% of isolated vertical medial malleolar fractures in the ankle fractures, and 61.5% of posterior comminution in the tibial plateau fractures. Conclusion: E-scooter and e-bike related injuries have a high incidence of tibial shaft fractures, ankle fractures, tibial plateau fractures, and radial head fractures. There should be a high index of suspicion for posterior and medial involvement in lower extremity fractures sustained due to e-scooter or e-bikes. Identifying specific fracture patterns seen in e-scooter and e-bike related mechanisms will help guide management of these injuries.

BACKGROUND: Myocarditis is among the most common complications arising from coronavirus infection (COVID-19). AIM: This study aims to find the differences in the patterns of myocardial injury between patients who had COVID-19 and those from the pre-pandemic period, as determined by contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study encompassed a retrospective analysis of 47 patients who underwent contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging to rule out acute myocarditis. Group 1 comprised 34 patients with a confirmed history of COVID-19 through PCR testing (nasal and/or throat swabs), while Group 2 comprised 13 individuals who underwent contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in 2017 prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. All patients enrolled in the study had clinical manifestation of cardiac injury without signs of coronary artery disease as an underlying cause of condition. RESULTS: The mean time from the onset of heart symptoms to the administration of contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was 166 days. In group 1, a decrease in exercise tolerance was observed in 77% of patients, and 14 (42%), 30 (88%), and 28 (85%) of patients complained of chest pain, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations, respectively. In group 2, four patients (30%) had dyspnea, nine patients (69%) complained of chest pain, and six patients (46%) had heart palpitations and/or feeling of arrhythmia. Myocardial injury in group 1 was more generalized. The third of them had displayed preserved increased pulmonary vascularity and pleural effusion. Within group 1, men had significantly lower left ventricular ejection fraction, lower values of global longitudinal deformation, and higher values of left atrial function compared with the corresponding parameters in women. Differences in women were found only in the number of the affected segments in the left ventricular myocardium. CONCLUSION: SARS-CoV-2 virus caused extended myocardial injury, affecting a significant number of myocardial segments. Men had more frequent postinflammatory complications, characterized by abnormal function of the left ventricle and left atrium. Obtained results require continuous efforts for further assessment of long-term consequences of previous COVID-19 to the cardiovascular system. In this regard, contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging may represent a sensitive imaging tool for the assessment of cardiac injury severity.

(1) Background: An online survey-based observational cross-sectional study aimed at elucidating the experience and attitudes of an unstructured population regarding diagnostic imaging. (2) Methods: Invitations to participate were distributed using mixed-mode design to deidentified residents aged 18 years and older. Main outcome measures included morbidity structure and incidence of diagnostic imaging administrations. (3) Results: Respondents (n = 1069) aged 44.3 ± 14.4 years; 32.8% suffered from cardiovascular diseases (CVD); 9.5% had chronic respiratory pathology; 28.9% considered themselves healthy. Respondents with COVID-19 history (49.7%) reported higher rates of computed tomography (CT) (p < 0.0001), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (p < 0.001), and ultrasound (p < 0.05). COVID-19 history in CVD respondents shifted imaging administrations towards CT and MRI (p < 0.05). Every tenth respondent received MRI, CT, and ultrasound on a paid basis; 29.0% could not pay for diagnostic procedures; 13.1% reported unavailable MRI. Professional status significantly affected the pattern of diagnostic modalities (p < 0.05). MRI and CT availability differed between respondents in urban and rural areas (p < 0.0001). History of technogenic events predisposed responders to overestimate diagnostic value of fluorography (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusions: Preparedness to future pandemics requires the development of community-based outreach programs focusing on people’s awareness regarding medical imaging safety and diagnostic value.

Urban cloudburst management may include the intentional temporary storage of flood water in green recreational areas. In cities with combined sewers, this will expose the population visiting the area to sewage and increase the risk of diarrhoeal disease. We present a unique approach to estimate the risk of diarrhoeal disease after urban flooding. The exposure scenario was: rainwater mixed with sewage flows into a park; sewage with pathogens deposit on the grass; after discharge, a baby plays on the grass and is exposed to the pathogens in the deposited sewage by hand-to-mouth transfer. The work included modelling the transport of sewage into four parks intended to be flooded during future cloudbursts. A flood simulation experiment was conducted to estimate the deposition of pathogens from sewage to grass and transfer from grass to hand. Hand-to-mouth transfer, based on literature values, was used to estimate the ingested dose of pathogens. The probability of illness was estimated by QMRA. The estimated average probability of illness varied between 0.03 and 17%. If the probability of illness is considered unacceptable, the cloudburst plans should be changed, or interventions, e.g. informing the public about the risk or restricting access to the flooded area, should be implemented. HIGHLIGHTS The work presented provides a new method for assessing the probability of diarrhoeal disease after urban flooding of green recreational parks by combining hydraulic modeling, flood simulation experiments and quantitative microbial risk assessment.; Urban flood risk managers can use the method for planning cloudburst solutions and for implementing risk reduction measures after a flood event.; For four evaluated parks, the average probability of illness for a baby playing on the grass after the flood event varied between 0.03 and 17%.; The probability of illness decreased to acceptable levels within a few weeks, as the pathogens from the sewage deposited in the grass died out.;

The article is dedicated to basic methodological principles of studying Frenchlanguage literatures in Western and Central Africa. In 60s–70s of the 20th century, foreign Africanists-literature scholars, such as Jacques Chevrièr, and domestic ones, I.D. Nikiforova in particular, studied such literatures as a typological commonness with basic peculiar features or characteristics. The first one is the French language with the tendency for the indigenisation and creation of a “hybrid message.” The second one is the general idea-driven and artistic paradigm: the anticolonial orientation, traditional Africa presentation, protection of the authentic culture, folklore, spiritual values. As distinct from foreign Africanists, both Nikiforova and other Russian scientists emphasised the national specific character of regional literatures, having substantiated two more features that are essential: the accelerated development and parallelism or “compression of styles,” alignment of various art movements within a single temporal space. By the late 20th century, the vector of African studies moved towards the analysis of certain literatures in such typological commonness, thus enabling to determine their national distinctness to a deeper and more precise extent.

Glycerol is employed as a functional component of heat-transfer fluids, which are of use in both bioreactors and various biosensor devices. At the same time, flowing glycerol was reported to cause considerable triboelectric effects. Herein, by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), we have revealed the long-term effect of glycerol flow, stopped in a ground-shielded coiled heat exchanger, on horseradish peroxidase (HRP) adsorption on mica. Namely, the solution of HRP was incubated in the vicinity of the side of the cylindrical coil with stopped glycerol flow, and then HRP was adsorbed from this solution onto a mica substrate. This incubation has been found to markedly increase the content of aggregated enzyme on mica—as compared with the control enzyme sample. We explain the phenomenon observed by the influence of triboelectrically induced electromagnetic fields of non-trivial topology. The results reported should be further considered in the development of flow-based heat exchangers of biosensors and bioreactors intended for operation with enzymes.

The authors of the article analyze the specifics of the formation of the linguistic picture of bilinguals, in whose minds two cultural codes are combined. The authors suggest that the linguistic picture of the world of bilinguals differs from the picture of a native speaker. When forming a bilingual linguistic personality, two cultures merge in his mind; many historical, social facts, influenced by individual and personal views, judgments, assessments, get a brighter color, are described differently, which makes it possible to understand the worldview of another person. Natural bilinguals, unlike artificial ones, have a combination of two pictures of the world, two cultural codes. However, both pictures in the mind of a bilingual, who is not divorced from one of the language environments, combine, change and eventually form another one with its own specific features. Bilingual writers, in whose minds two different languages are combined, using, for example, the Russian language when creating their work, nevertheless find themselves in the system of images of their native language, native culture. As a result, expressions, stylistic techniques and other means of artistic expression that are atypical for native speakers appear. This is how a new cultural code appears, which requires special linguistic means. A bilingual writer evaluates any phenomenon from the point of view of the native cultural The article provides examples: some characteristic features of the work of the Swedish bilingual writer of Greek origin Theodor Kallifatides, Russian-American writer V.V. Russian Russian and Kyrgyz literature by Chingiz Aitmatov, Russian French writer Andrei Makin. A bilingual author, in whose mind two different worlds are connected, nevertheless is closer to the system of images of his native language, native culture.

The paper demonstrates a need to study the functional reliability of identification systems and the applicability of methods for ensuring the functional reliability of information systems for biometric identification systems. Methods of ensuring functional reliability of biometric identification systems via providing indicators of reliability of identification devices and introducing redundancy are considered. The applicability of the methods for biometric identification systems is investigated, its advantages and disadvantages are evaluated. Triple modular redundancy scheme has been developed for the program redundancy using N-version programming. An appropriate reliability scheme based on the principles of dual programming has been developed to implement the identification system with one additional redundant element. Based on the NIST statistics of face recognition algorithms for the developed reliability schemes the reliability indicators were evaluated and its advantages over a system consisting of a single non-redundant element have been shown. The proposed reliability schemes are consistent with the practice of ensuring the functional reliability of information systems and can be integrated into biometric identification systems that use biometric data as the main access identifier.

Abstract Background Patient-reported allergies (PRAs) are often stigmatized as a potential nonmodifiable risk factor for increased pain and worse functional outcomes following surgery. However, there is a dearth of literature directly assessing the impact of PRAs on outcomes in sport surgeries such as medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFLR). The purpose of our study was to determine whether PRAs were associated with worse outcomes following MPFLR. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of patients who underwent MPFLR at our institution from 2011 to 2019. Patients were included if they had at least 12 months of follow-up. PRAs were obtained from preoperative medical assessments and categorized by drug class. Demographic and perioperative data were obtained from electronic medical records. Postoperative outcomes were measured using a telephone survey and included recurrent instability, Visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, VAS for sports, Kujala score, MPFL-Return to Sport after Injury (MPFL-RSI) score, and overall satisfaction score. Multiple linear regression was used to determine association between PRAs and outcome measures, and p-values less than 0.05 were considered significant. Results The cohort included 141 MPFLR. Most patients were female (98, 70%) with an average age of 25 years (range 12–56 years). Average follow-up time was 47 months. Forty-seven patients (33%) reported at least one PRA. There were no significant differences in postoperative pain, functional outcomes, satisfaction, or return to sport between patients with or without PRAs (all p > 0.05). Absence of antibiotic PRAs was predictive of higher VAS (p 0.05). Conclusions In conclusion, PRAs with or without concomitant psychiatric diagnoses are not associated with worse postoperative pain, functional outcomes, or satisfaction following MPFLR with allograft, dispelling common misconceptions that increased number of allergies or psychiatric diagnoses lead to inferior surgical outcomes. Presence of antibiotic allergies was associated with lower VAS postoperative pain score. Future research should investigate the relationship between PRAs and other surgeries in the field of sports medicine.
