With industrial advancement it has become one of the foremost sources of heavy metals instigating it into different component of ecosystem air, water and soil. Various techniques are currently available which are used for the treatment of discharge of various industries often laden with noxious metal particles. This chapter discusses in brief current wastewater treatment procedures for removal of heavy metals.

Abstract

Treatment of municipal and industrial sewage and wastewater is one of the many important biotechnological processes used globally. In recent decades several advances have been made to optimize the design and operation of wastewater treatment plants. The quality of effluent discharged relies on the structure and dynamics of the dominant microbial community present, which on one hand helps in removal of nitrogen and phosphorous from the wastewater and on other hand adds to major problems like bulking and foaming of sludge. The current chapter aims to summarize the use of varied techniques which help in determining diversity, composition, and dynamics of the bacterial community which could be used to revamp the performance and efficiency of wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract

The development of nanoparticle-incorporated hybrid membranes is an intense research area in the present scenario. Many efforts have been made to develop functional membranes using various nanoparticles, however further research works are still required to better understand design and functions of nanoparticle based membranes. This chapter will include the process of development of nanoparticle fabricated membranes, which can be used in various waste water treatment in removal of different components, for example, arsenic, heavy metals, organic pollutants (organic acids, phenolic compound, polyaromatic hydrocarbons), etc. This chapter will also discuss the highly water-soluble magnetic nanoparticles and multiwalled nanotubes, which have been extensively incorporated into the polymeric and ceramic membranes.
