We present time-of-flight neutron total scattering and polarized neutron scattering measurements of the magnetically frustrated compounds NaCaCo2F7 and NaSrCo2F7, which belong to a class of recently discovered pyrochlore compounds based on transition metals and fluorine. The magnetic pair distribution function (mPDF) technique is used to analyze and model the total scattering data in real space. We find that a previously proposed model of short-range XY-like correlations with a length scale of 10-15 Å, combined with nearest-neighbor collinear antiferromagnetic correlations, accurately describes the mPDF data at low temperature, confirming the magnetic ground state in these materials. This model is further verified by the polarized neutron scattering data. From an analysis of the temperature dependence of the mPDF and polarized neutron scattering data, we find that short-range correlations persist on the nearest-neighbor length scale up to 200 K, approximately two orders of magnitude higher than the spin freezing temperatures of these compounds. These results highlight the opportunity presented by these new pyrochlore compounds to study the effects of geometric frustration at relatively high temperatures, while also advancing the mPDF technique and providing an opportunity to investigate a genuinely short-range-ordered magnetic ground state directly in real space.

Magnetic materials are composed of the simple building blocks of magnetic moments on a crystal lattice that interact via magnetic exchange. Yet from this simplicity emerges a remarkable diversity of magnetic states. Some reveal the deep quantum mechanical origins of magnetism, for example, quantum spin liquid (QSL) states in which magnetic moments remain disordered at low temperatures despite being strongly correlated through quantum entanglement. A promising theoretical model of a QSL is the Kitaev model, composed of unusual bond-dependent exchange interactions, but experimentally, this model is challenging to realise. Here we show that the material requirements for the Kitaev QSL survive an extended pseudo-edge-sharing superexchange pathway of Ru 3+ octahedra within the honeycomb layers of the inorganic framework solid, RuP 3 SiO 11 . We confirm the requisite j eff = 1 2 state of Ru 3+ in RuP 3 SiO 11 and resolve the hierarchy of exchange interactions that provide experimental access to an unexplored region of the Kitaev model., Competing Interests: Competing interests The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2024. Protein dynamics play a vital role in biology. Quasi elastic neutron scattering (QENS) is an ideal method to access these dynamics. To isolate protein dynamics, it is important to separate the signal of the buffer and the protein. Normally data analysis is performed based on the assumption that the scattering spectrum is incoherent. To observe the full range of protein dynamics, it is necessary to perform the experiments in solution. This solution is usually a fully deuterated buffer, while the protein remains protonated. It is generally assumed that subtracting the buffer contribution removes all coherent signal from the measured spectrum, and the rest can be considered as purely incoherent. Up until recently, there was no way to experimentally verify this assumption. Polarized QENS experiments allow for the coherent and incoherent contributions to be separated. By comparing the results from the polarized QENS experiment and the standard analysis method from unpolarized QENS, we are thus able to check this assumption experimentally. We show that the pure incoherent spectrum obtained from polarization analysis does not match the results for unpolarized QENS. We discuss the implications of this for data analysis and possible solutions to the problem, as well as mitigation techniques for standard QENS.

By using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy with polarization analysis, we have separated coherent and incoherent contributions to the scattering of deuterated tetrahydrofuran in a wide scattering vector (Q)-range from meso- to inter-molecular length scales. The results are compared with those recently reported for water to address the influence of the nature of inter-molecular interactions (van der Waals vs hydrogen bond) on the dynamics. The phenomenology found is qualitatively similar in both systems. Both collective and self-scattering functions are satisfactorily described in terms of a convolution model that considers vibrations, diffusion, and a Q-independent mode. We observe a crossover in the structural relaxation from being dominated by the Q-independent mode at the mesoscale to being dominated by diffusion at inter-molecular length scales. The characteristic time of the Q-independent mode is the same for collective and self-motions and, contrary to water, faster and with a lower activation energy (≈1.4 Kcal/mol) than the structural relaxation time at inter-molecular length scales. This follows the macroscopic viscosity behavior. The collective diffusive time is well described by the de Gennes narrowing relation proposed for simple monoatomic liquids in a wide Q-range entering the intermediate length scales, in contraposition to the case of water., (© 2023 Author(s). We introduce a simple method to extract the nuclear coherent and isotope incoherent, spin incoherent, and magnetic neutron scattering cross section components from powder scattering data measured using a single neutron beam polarization direction and a position-sensitive detector with large out-of-plane coverage. The method draws inspiration from polarized small-angle neutron scattering and contrasts with conventional so-called "xyz" polarization analysis on wide-angle instruments, which requires measurements with three orthogonal polarization directions. The viability of the method is demonstrated on both simulated and experimental data for the classical "spin ice" system Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 , the latter from the LET direct geometry spectrometer at the ISIS facility. The cross section components can be reproduced with good fidelity by either fitting the out-of-plane angle dependence around a Debye-Scherrer cone or grouping the data by angle and performing a matrix inversion. The limitations of the method and its practical uses are discussed.

The B-site sublattice in the double perovskite oxides A 2 BB'O 6 (B: magnetic cation; B': nonmagnetic cation) causes spin frustration, but the relationship between the structure and spin frustration remains unclear although a number of compounds have been studied. The present study systematically investigated A 2 Mn II B'O 6 ( S = 5/2) and found that the frustration factor, defined by f = |θ W |/ T N (θ W : Weiss temperature; T N : Néel temperature), scales linearly with the tolerance factor t , i.e., octahedral rotation. Unexpectedly, La 2 MnTaO 5 N (space group: P 2 1 / n ) synthesized under high pressure is more frustrated ( f = 6) than oxides with similar t values, despite the large octahedral rotation due to the small t value of 0.914. Structural analysis suggests that the enhanced frustration can be attributed to the site preference of nitride anions at the equatorial positions, which reduces the variance of neighboring Mn-Mn distances. Our findings provide a new guide to control and improve spin frustration in double perovskites with multiple anions.

It is well established that in the low-temperature limit, the two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice (2DQHAFSL) exhibits an anomaly in its spectrum at short-wavelengths on the zone-boundary. In the vicinity of thepoint the pole in the one-magnon response exhibits a downward dispersion, is heavily damped and attenuated, giving way to an isotropic continuum of excitations extending to high energies. The origin of the anomaly and the presence of the continuum are of current theoretical interest, with suggestions focused around the idea that the latter evidences the existence of spinons in a two-dimensional system. Here we present the results of neutron inelastic scattering experiments and Quantum Monte Carlo calculations on the metallo-organic compound Cu(DCOO)D 2 O (CFTD), an excellent physical realisation of the 2DQHAFSL, designed to investigate how the anomaly atevolves up to finite temperatures. Our data reveal that on warming the anomaly survives the loss of long-range, three-dimensional order, and that it is thus a robust feature of the two-dimensional system. With further increase of temperature the zone-boundary response gradually softens and broadens, washing out theanomaly. This is confirmed by a comparison of our data with the results of finite-temperature Quantum Monte Carlo simulations where the two are found to be in good accord. Spin liquids are highly correlated yet disordered states formed by the entanglement of magnetic dipoles 1 . Theories define such states using gauge fields and deconfined quasiparticle excitations that emerge from a local constraint governing the ground state of a frustrated magnet. For example, the '2-in-2-out' ice rule for dipole moments on a tetrahedron can lead to a quantum spin ice 2-4 in rare-earth pyrochlores. However, f -electron ions often carry multipole degrees of freedom of higher rank than dipoles, leading to intriguing behaviours and 'hidden' orders 5-6 . Here we show that the correlated ground state of a Ce 3+ -based pyrochlore, Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 , is a quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles. Our neutron scattering results are consistent with a fluid-like state where degrees of freedom have a more complex magnetization density than that of magnetic dipoles. The nature and strength of the octupole-octupole couplings, together with the existence of a continuum of excitations attributed to spinons, provides further evidence for a quantum ice of octupoles governed by a '2-plus-2-minus' rule 7-8 . Our work identifies Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 as a unique example of frustrated multipoles forming a 'hidden' topological order, thus generalizing observations on quantum spin liquids to multipolar phases that can support novel types of emergent fields and excitations.

Pyrochlore systems are ideally suited to the exploration of geometrical frustration in three dimensions, and their rich phenomenology encompasses topological order and fractional excitations. Classical spin ices provide the first context in which it is possible to control emergent magnetic monopoles, and anisotropic exchange leads to even richer behaviour associated with large quantum fluctuations. Whether the magnetic ground state of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 is a quantum spin liquid or a ferromagnetic phase induced by a Higgs transition appears to be sample dependent. Here we have determined the role of structural defects on the magnetic ground state via the diffuse scattering of neutrons. We find that oxygen vacancies stabilise the spin liquid phase and the stuffing of Ti sites by Yb suppresses it. Samples in which the oxygen vacancies have been eliminated by annealing in oxygen exhibit a transition to a ferromagnetic phase, and this is the true magnetic ground state.

Acceptor-doped barium zirconates are currently receiving considerable interest because of their high proton conductivity at intermediate temperatures, making them applicable as electrolytes in various electrochemical devices, but the mechanism of proton conduction is unclear. Here, we investigate the role of the acceptor-dopant level in the localized proton motions, i.e. proton transfers between oxygens and O-H reorientations, in hydrated samples of the proton conducting, acceptor-doped, perovskites BaZr1-xInxO3-x/2 with x = 0.10 and 0.20, using quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS). Analysis of the QENS spectra reveals that several proton transfer and O-H reorientational motions contribute to the QENS signal, as a consequence of the locally disordered nature of the structure due to the In doping of these materials, and establishes a generic and complex picture of localized proton dynamics in acceptor-doped barium zirconate based proton conductors. A comparison of the QENS results with vibrational spectroscopy data of the same materials, as reported in the literature, suggests a predominance of O-H reorientational motions in the observed dynamics. The highest doping level corresponds to a more distorted structure and faster dynamics, which thus indicates that some degree of structural disorder is favourable for high local proton mobility.

The charge ordered structure of ions and vacancies characterizing rare-earth pyrochlore oxides serves as a model for the study of geometrically frustrated magnetism. The organization of magnetic ions into networks of corner-sharing tetrahedra gives rise to highly correlated magnetic phases with strong fluctuations, including spin liquids and spin ices. It is an open question how these ground states governed by local rules are affected by disorder. Here we demonstrate in the pyrochlore Tb 2 Hf 2 O 7 , that the vicinity of the disordering transition towards a defective fluorite structure translates into a tunable density of anion Frenkel disorder while cations remain ordered. Quenched random crystal fields and disordered exchange interactions can therefore be introduced into otherwise perfect pyrochlore lattices of magnetic ions. We show that disorder can play a crucial role in preventing long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, and instead induces a strongly fluctuating Coulomb spin liquid with defect-induced frozen magnetic degrees of freedom.Experimental studies of frustrated spin systems such as pyrochlore magnetic oxides test our understanding of quantum many-body physics. Here the authors show experimentally that Tb 2 Hf 2 O 7 may be a model material for investigating how structural disorder can stabilize a quantum spin liquid phase.

We present the results of a combined ^{7}Li-NMR and diffraction study on LiGa_{0.95}In_{0.05}Cr_{4}O_{8}, a member of the LiGa_{1-x}In_{x}Cr_{4}O_{8} "breathing" pyrochlore family. Via specific heat and NMR measurements, we find that the complex sequence of first-order transitions observed for LiGaCr_{4}O_{8} is replaced by a single second-order transition at T_{f}=11  K. Neutron and x-ray diffraction rule out both structural symmetry lowering and magnetic long-range order as the origin of this transition. Instead, reverse Monte Carlo fitting of the magnetic diffuse scattering indicates that the low-temperature phase may be described as a collinear spin nematic state, characterized by a quadrupolar order parameter. This state also shows signs of short-range order between collinear spin arrangements on tetrahedra, revealed by mapping the reverse Monte Carlo spin configurations onto a three-state color model.

Quantum magnets have occupied the fertile ground between many-body theory and low-temperature experiments on real materials since the early days of quantum mechanics. However, our understanding of even deceptively simple systems of interacting spins-1/2 is far from complete. The quantum square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QSLHAF), for example, exhibits a striking anomaly of hitherto unknown origin in its magnetic excitation spectrum. This quantum effect manifests itself for excitations propagating with the specific wave vector ( π , 0). We use polarized neutron spectroscopy to fully characterize the magnetic fluctuations in the metal-organic compound CFTD, a known realization of the QSLHAF model. Our experiments reveal an isotropic excitation continuum at the anomaly, which we analyse theoretically using Gutzwiller-projected trial wavefunctions. The excitation continuum is accounted for by the existence of spatially-extended pairs of fractional S =1/2 quasiparticles, 2D analogues of 1D spinons. Away from the anomalous wave vector, these fractional excitations are bound and form conventional magnons. Our results establish the existence of fractional quasiparticles in the high-energy spectrum of a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet, even in the absence of frustration.

We present new magnetic heat capacity and neutron scattering results for two magnetically frustrated molybdate pyrochlores: S=1 oxide Lu_{2}Mo_{2}O_{7} and S=1/2 oxynitride Lu_{2}Mo_{2}O_{5}N_{2}. Lu_{2}Mo_{2}O_{7} undergoes a transition to an unconventional spin glass ground state at T_{f}∼16  K. However, the preparation of the corresponding oxynitride tunes the nature of the ground state from spin glass to quantum spin liquid. The comparison of the static and dynamic spin correlations within the oxide and oxynitride phases presented here reveals the crucial role played by quantum fluctuations in the selection of a ground state. Furthermore, we estimate an upper limit for a gap in the spin excitation spectrum of the quantum spin liquid state of the oxynitride of Δ∼0.05  meV or Δ/|θ|∼0.004, in units of its antiferromagnetic Weiss constant θ∼-121  K.

The low-energy (ε = ħω < 1 meV), low-temperature (T = 0.05 K) spin dynamics of the s = 1/2 kagome candidate herbertsmithite are probed in the presence of magnetic fields up to 2.5 T. The zero-field spectra reveal a very weak continuum of scattering at T = 10 K and a broad inelastic peak centred at ε(max) = 0.2 meV at lower temperatures, T < 1 K. The broad peak is found to be strongly damped, with a liquid-like structure factor implying correlations at length scales up to r = 6 Å. The field dependence of the peak appears to follow the Zeeman splitting of s = 1/2 excitations, consistent with the weakly split 'doublets' observed in low-temperature specific heat. A possible explanation of these observations is a short-range correlated state involving defect spins between the kagome planes and moments in the kagome layers.

A unique type of frustrated lattice is found in two A-site ordered spinel oxides, LiGaCr(4)O(8) and LiInCr(4)O(8). Because of the large size mismatch between Li(+) and Ga(3+)/In(3+) ions at the A site, the pyrochlore lattice, made up of Cr(3+) ions carrying spin 3/2, becomes an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, i.e., a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice. We introduce a parameter, the breathing factor B(f), which quantifies the degree of frustration in the pyrochlore lattice: B(f) is defined as J'/J, where J' and J are nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions in the large and small tetrahedra, respectively. LiGaCr(4)O(8) with B(f)~0.6 shows magnetic susceptibility similar to that of conventional Cr spinel oxides such as ZnCr(2)O(4). In contrast, LiInCr(4)O(8) with a small B(f)~0.1 exhibits a spin-gap behavior in its magnetic susceptibility, suggesting a proximity to an exotic singlet ground state. Magnetic long-range order occurs at 13.8 and 15.9 K for LiGaCr(4)O(8) and LiInCr(4)O(8), respectively, in both cases likely owing to the coupling to structural distortions.

A new polymorph of volborthite [tricopper(II) divanadium(V) heptaoxide dihydroxide dihydrate], Cu(3)V(2)O(7)(OH)(2)·2H(2)O, has been discovered in a single crystal prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. X-ray analysis reveals that the monoclinic structure has the space group C2/c at room temperature, which is different from that of the previously reported C2/m structure. Both structures have Cu(3)O(6)(OH)(2) layers composed of edge-sharing CuO(4)(OH)(2) octahedra, with V(2)O(7) pillars and water molecules between the layers. The Cu atoms occupy two and three independent crystallographic sites in the C2/m and C2/c structures, respectively, likely giving rise to different magnetic interactions between Cu(II) spins in the kagome lattices embedded in the Cu(3)O(6)(OH)(2) layers.

The orbital is one of the four fundamental degrees of freedom in a solid, besides spin, charge and lattice. In transition metal compounds, it is usually the d orbitals which play deciding roles in determining the crystallographic and physical properties. Here we report the discovery of a unique structural transition in single crystals of the spin-1/2 quasi-kagomé antiferromagnet volborthite, Cu(3)V(2)O(7)(OH)(2)·2H(2)O, whereby the unpaired electron 'switches' from one d orbital to another upon cooling. This is not a conventional orbital order-disorder transition, but rather an orbital switching that has not previously been observed. The structural transition is found to profoundly affect the magnetic properties of volborthite, because magnetic interactions between Cu spins in the kagomé lattice are considerably modified by the orbital switching. This finding provides us with an interesting example to illustrate the intimate interplay between the orbital degree of freedom and competing magnetic interactions in a frustrated magnet.

Spangolite, Cu(6)Al(SO(4))(OH)(12)Cl·3H(2)O, is a hydrated layered copper sulfate mineral. The Cu(2+) ions of each layer form a systematically depleted triangular lattice which approximates a maple leaf lattice. We present details of the crystal structure, which suggest that in spangolite this lattice actually comprises two species of edge linked trimers with different exchange parameters. However, magnetic susceptibility measurements show that despite the structural trimers, the magnetic properties are dominated by dimerization. The high temperature magnetic moment is strongly reduced below that expected for the six s = 1/2 in the unit cell.

Neutron spectroscopy and diffuse neutron scattering on herbertsmithite [ZnCu(3)(OH)(6)Cl(2)], a near-ideal realization of the s=1/2 kagome antiferromagnet, reveal the hallmark property of a quantum spin liquid: instantaneous short-ranged antiferromagnetic correlations in the absence of a time-averaged ordered moment. These dynamic antiferromagnetic correlations are weakly dependent of neutron-energy transfer and temperature, and persist up to 25 meV and 120 K. At low energy transfers a shift of the magnetic scattering to low Q is observed with increasing temperature, providing evidence of gapless spinons. It is argued that these observations provide important evidence in favor of resonating-valence-bond theories of (doped) Mott insulators.

The establishment of pediatric emergency medicine as a subspecialty of emergency medicine has engendered the need for closer examination and development of guidelines for fellowship training. Core content and curriculum documents pertaining to fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine for pediatric graduates have been published previously. However, the educational needs of emergency medicine graduates for such training are significantly different from those of pediatric graduates in several important respects. We believe that emergency physicians should take an active role in the creation and refinement of educational guidelines for fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine for emergency medicine graduates. For this reason, we present a proposed core content outline in the hope that it will serve to foster this process.

Both platelets and macrophages play a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. To examine whether they may interact and, if they do, to elucidate the mechanisms of such an interaction, suspensions of the two cell types from rabbits were mixed together, then subjected to Stractan density-gradient centrifugation and transmission electron microscopy. Suspensions of only one cell type served as controls. When otherwise unstimulated platelets and macrophages came into contact with each other, the platelets became less dense. Ultrastructurally, the platelets underwent shape changes without losing their granules, and were often arranged around the macrophages like a rosette. The processes of the macrophages became elongated. ADP caused a similar shift in platelet density and, when the cell types were together, increased this shift. With ADP the rosetting was abolished, but platelet aggregates were found to be in superficial contact with the macrophages. With thrombin the contact between the platelet aggregates and macrophages was close. Addition of platelet antagonists showed that the shift in platelet density and the rosetting upon contact with macrophages are dependent on divalent cations. Neither ADP, nor thrombin, nor PAF seem to be involved in the reactions.

Study Objective: To delineate the topics discussed with families during the death notification process and to identify which of these topics are stressful to the physician. Also, the survey served as a needs assessment in designing an educational program for emergency medicine residents in death notification., Design and Participants: Forty-five residents and 20 attendings physicians in emergency medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania were given an anonymous, self-administered, 47-item questionnaire seeking demographic information and assessing topics discussed during notification, perceived importance to the family of these topics, and the stressfulness of these topics., Results: One hundred percent of the participants responded to the survey. Hospital care, prehospital care, and cause of death were most often discussed with the family, although no topic was discussed 100% of the time by all physicians. Those items that may be perceived as emotionally charged, such as organ donation and autopsy, were rated as more stressful and were less frequently addressed during notification., Conclusion: Factual information is discussed most often, and emotional issues are considered most stressful. Therefore, a program in death notification must address those issues that must be handled during a notification and provide mechanisms for residents to feel comfortable with emotional responses from the family.

Interest in pediatric emergency medicine has grown steadily during the past decade among pediatricians and emergency physicians. With the rapid proliferation of pediatric emergency medicine programs for pediatricians has come extensive and valuable experience with this type of fellowship education. As a result, the structure and scope of these programs have become increasingly well established. Because the number of pediatric emergency medicine fellowship programs for emergency physicians has yet to reach "critical mass," no similar de facto standards exist for these programs. The recent establishment of guidelines for pediatric emergency medicine subspecialty certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics brings new importance to fostering such standards for the training for emergency physicians. To this end, we present a proposed pediatric emergency medicine fellowship program developed during a retreat that included physicians from an emergency medicine program and two pediatric hospitals. We also review some of the significant events that have occurred in the evolution of pediatric emergency care.
