Purple sweet potato farming in Banyuwangi as a mainstay commodity to support farmers' income. The local variety TW became the preferred local variety, but farmers began to complain about the decline in productivity. These problems need an effort to improve the use of local varieties in the use of superior varieties in restoring the productivity level of purple sweet potato to its original state. Thus, it is necessary to dame plots of prospective superior varieties to obtain farmer's assessment and preferences before purple sweet potato clones are released into varieties that have legality as VUB. The results showed that farmers and traders liked the skin and tuber shape of MSU 1001-15 and MSU 1002-07 clones. The reasons farmers chose the two clones were because: 1) they had a bright color and rather thick skin, 2) the shape of the large tubers was not too round and elongated, and the yield was high. The value of purple sweet potato farming in Banyuwangi is economically feasible in terms of marketing and income value which has a significant advantage.

Produktivitas ubi jalar di tingkat petani masih rendah dan jauh di bawah potensi hasil karena rendahnya penggunaan bahan tanam yang unggul, sifat musiman produksi dan adanya serangga hama dan penyakit. Penelitian dilakukan di Desa/Kecamatan Pasrujambe, Kabupaten Lumajang Provinsi Jawa Timur pada MK 1 tahun 2021. Ada 3 teknologi yang digunakan:1) Teknologi inovasi menggunakan mulsa plastik, mulsa jerami dan VUB yaitu varietas Beta 1, Beta 2, Antin 2 dan Antin 3. 2)Teknologi rekomendasi menggunakan mulsa plastik dan jerami dan varietas lokal madu,. 3) teknologi petani, tanpa menggunakan mulsa dan varietas yang digunakan variatas lokal madu. Dari hasil penelitian dapat diketahui bahwa mayoritas pendidikan petani kooperator adalah SD sebanyak 46%, sebanyak 47% petani mempunyai pengalaman berusahatani ubi jalar selama 11-20 tahun dan 57% berada di usia produktif. Dari hasil diketahui bahwa penggunaan mulsa plastik dan varietas unggul (teknologi inovasi) meningkatkan produksi ubi jalar rata-rata sebesar 61%, sedangkan teknologi rekomendasi meningkatkan 49%. Hasil tertinggi diperoleh pada teknologi inovasi dengan varietas Beta 2 yaitu 45 t/ha. Pada analisa usahatani diketahui meski total biaya pada teknologi inovasi dan rekomendasi lebih tinggi dan harga ubi jalar varietas unggul lebih rendah Rp. 500 daripada varietas lokal tetapi keuntungan yang diperoleh tetap lebih tinggi. Dengan teknologi inovasi dan rekomendasi keuntungan yang diperoleh lebih tinggi masing-masing sebesar 56 %dan 53 % dari penggunaan teknologi eksisting petani. Nilai MBCR tertinggi pada penerapan teknologi inovasi dengan menggunakan mulsa jerami dan varietas unggul sebesar 6,92.

A varietal testing had been undertaken in Pematangsiantar regency, North Sumatra province, Indonesia in 2015-2016. The objective of the study was to determine the preference of cassava growers to the introduced varieties compared to the existing cassava varieties. Twelve cassava varities (UB1/2, UB1472, Adira1, Malang4, Cecekijo, Farsem, Gajah, Ketan Jabung, Caspro, Malaysia, Adira4, and Cikaret) were tested using a Randomized Block Design with four replications. The data were taken on aboveground characters and underground characters such as root number, root diameter, root length, root weight, and starch content based on factory criteria (A = 22%, B = 18%, C = 14% and D = 10% starch content). Results of the study indicated that Malang-4 had the highest root yield (49,830 kg ha-1) followed by Farsem variety (41,690 kg ha-1), and Malaysia Local variety (41,030 kg ha-1). The bitter taste of Malang 4 was an appropriate character to be developed as starch processing of cassava. Starch content is very important indigenous criteria for farmers and traders to know fairly about pricing in relation with starch content. The higher starch content coincided with higher root yield of Malang-4 is very interesting and will benefit the factory. There was no difference in factory price of cassava from farmers, although the starch content indicated different levels (B =18%, C=14% or D =10%). The Malang-4 could be introduced to the local goverment for being grown in a larger areas in the North Sumatera province.

This research was conducted to determine the financial feasibility of growing soybean varieties and their competitiveness in the rice-based cropping system of Indonesia. The research was conducted at two locations in 2020. The results showed that the use of improved varieties of soybean yielded 2.24 t/ha and 2.09 t/ha, which was higher than using local (non-improved) varieties. The use of improved varieties was financially feasible with Revenue Cost (R/C) ratios of 1.88–1.98 and Benefit Cost (B/C) ratios of 0.88–0.98. The competitiveness of soybeans in Mojokerto and Pasuruan was lower compared to maize and mungbean. Soybean could compete with competing crops if the productivity and price were higher than the current conditions. To be able to compete with maize, the soybean productivity should be 5.14–5.22 t/ha if the current soybean price per kg is IDR 7200 (about US $ 0.51). To compete with mungbean, the soybean productivity should reach 3.05 t/ha with the current price per kg of IDR 7200 (about US $ 0.51). When measured by the price level, to be able to compete with maize, the soybean selling price per kg should be IDR 14,428–IDR 14,893 (about USD 1.06) with a productivity level of 2.24 t/ha.

National soybean consumption in 2018 was not in balance with its production. One of factors affecting soybean production is location-specific improved varieties utilization. The research aimed to identify farmers’ considerations in responding improved soybean varieties and prospective lines. The research was conducted in KP Taman Bogo, East Lampung and BP3T at Tambak Ulang, South Kalimantan. Data collected presented into tables. A descriptive analysis used by calculating means and percentage value. The results showed that crop height, seed shape, drought resistance, and fall resistance were the dominant considerations for East Lampung farmers. South Kalimantan farmers chose growth type, flowering age, harvest age, pod color, non-breaking pod, leaf shape, seed color, wilting symptoms, pests and diseases resistance, fall resistance, and ease of sale variables. Of the ten lines and four Iletri’s improved soybean varieties, East Lampung farmers chose Grobogan for crop phisycal performance as priority I (37.9%) and II Tgm/933 (24,2%); while South Kalimantan farmers chose Tanggamus (23.3%), Tgm/Anj-910 (26,7%) and Tgm/Anj-933 lines (30%). For seed characteristics, 51.7% of East Lampung farmers chose Grobogan as priority I, while South Kalimantan farmers chose Tgm/Anj-931 line (30.0%). It is expected that by selecting location-specific improved varieties, farmers can increase soybean production, thereby increasing their income.

National soybean production needs to be increased for meeting domestic soybean demand and suppress soybean import, through improving cultivation techniques including using improved varieties. Study aims to evaluate the feasibility of improved large-seeded soybean cultivation. The study was carried out in 2021 in Tegaldlimo Sub-district, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through survey and field observation on the application of existing and recommended technologies. The results showed that 5 new improved large-seeded soybean varieties introduced, namely Dega 1, Devon 1, Denasa 1, Denasa 2, and Detap 1 resulted in higher production than local Martoloyo. The recommended technology was more profitable than the existing as indicated by B/C ratio >1. The introduction of new varieties that are different from Martoloyo attracted 100% of farmers to adopt. In terms of crop and seed physical appearances, farmers prefer to Devon 1 due to its similarity appearance to Martoloyo, except the seed size. In term of economic feasibility, Devon 1 is profitable to be cultivated with B/C ratio of 1.5.

Pests and diseases are one of the obstacles to increase soybean productivity in Indonesia. Pests control by chemical pesticides requires high production cost resulted in a low profit of soybean farming; therefore, it is less favorable to farmers. The study aims to evaluate the economic feasibility of soybean farming using bio-pesticide in rainfed rice fields. The research was conducted in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, during the second dry season of 2018. The survey involved forty respondents. Three improved soybean varieties (Anjasmoro, Argomulyo, and Devon) and one local variety (Martoloyo) were evaluated on two cultivation technologies, namely bio-pesticide and existing. The results showed that the yield of existing technology was 2.18 t ha−1 or 5.8% higher than the bio-pesticide (2.06 t ha−1). Anjasmoro obtained the highest seed yield, i.e. 2.31 and 2.38 t ha-1, while the lowest was Argomulyo, i.e. 1.85 and 1.96 t ha-1, respectively for both bio-pesticide and existing technologies. The application of soybean cultivation using bio-pesticide technology and improved varieties provided a profit of IDR 8,785,300. The profit was 125.88% higher than the existing. Bio-pesticide and existing technologies (both for improved and local varieties) showed the R/C ratio >1, suggested that both technologies were feasible to be developed.

Sweet potato is consumed as a source of carbohydrate as a substitute for essential food (rice). Due to limited area in Java island, Indonesia, the expansion of sweet potato could be cultivated in tidal swamp land. Therefore, this research was aimed to determine the financial feasibility of sweet potato technology packages in tidal swamp field. This research was carried out in tidal swamp fields: Roham Village, Wanaraya District, Barito Koala Regency, and South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia from March to July 2019. This study compared two innovative and existing technologies. The innovative technology introduced to the farmers emphasized on intensive processing in order to reduce the occurrence of the main pests of sweet potato in tidal fields. Innovative technologyy includes tillage done with plows and rakes. The results of this research showed that application of sweet potato cultivation technology packages with improved tillage, land cover with mulch, pest control using chemical fungicides and shallot extracts has proven to be financially feasible. Existing farmers (local variety) who switch to innovative technology using Sari variety, the profit earned increased by 232.47%. Technically, the application of the tuber yield innovative technology for Sari variety was higher, both controlled using chemical insecticides and innovative technology of 18.25 and 24.15 tons/ha, respectively. The implementation of the introduced cultivation technology package was able to increase local sweet potato production to the superior Sari variety by 96.82% compared to the farmer technology package at the same location. R/C and B/C ratio > 1 for innovative technology shows that innovation technology is feasible to be developed at the researched location.

Financial feasibility and added value analysis of home scale-agroindustries development based on cassava commodity in Barito Koala District, South Kalimantan. Cassava processing into food products aimed to improve shelf-life of fresh cassava in order to be feasible to be consumed and to give added value in order to improve cassava’s selling value. Prospect of home scale-agroindustries development based on cassava was observed by analyze their financial feasibility and added value. Research location was detemined using purposive sampling method; while sample taking was determined using simple random sampling and key person methods. Data obtained was analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative descriptive methods. Stages of financial feasibility and added value analysis were production cost analyses, revenue, benefit, and efficiency (B/C ratio), and added value. Home scale-agroindustries based on cassav in Barito Koala District have prospect to be developed. However, with B/C ratio greater than 1 (1.67), cassava chips industry has more chance to be developed due to it is more efficient and feasible. The highest added value ratio as well as benefit ratio i.e. 63.13% and 90.79% respectively, showed that the chips indsutry can give the high added value and benefit for producer.
