Water resources reanalysis (WRR) can be used as a numerical tool to advance our understanding of hydrological processes where in situ observations are limited. However, WRR products are associated with uncertainty that needs to be quantified to improve usability of such products in water resources applications. In this study, we evaluate estimates of water cycle components from 18 state-of-the-art WRR datasets derived from different land surface/hydrological models, meteorological forcing, and precipitation datasets. The evaluation was conducted at three spatial scales in the upper Blue Nile basin in Ethiopia. Precipitation, streamflow, evapotranspiration (ET), and terrestrial water storage (TWS) were evaluated against in situ daily precipitation and streamflow measurements, remote sensing–derived ET, and the NASA Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) product, respectively. Our results highlight the current strengths and limitations of the available WRR datasets in analyzing the hydrological cycle and dynamics of the study basins, showing an overall underestimation of ET and TWS and overestimation of streamflow. While calibration improves streamflow simulation, it results in a relatively poorer performance in terms of ET. In addition, we show that the differences in the schemes used in the various land surface models resulted in significant differences in the estimation of the water cycle components from the respective WRR products, while we noted small differences among the products related to precipitation forcing. We did not identify a single product that consistently outperformed others; however, we found that there are specific WRR products that provided accurate representation of a single component of the water cycle (e.g., only runoff) in the area. This study evaluates a machine learning-based precipitation ensemble technique (MLPET) over three mountainous tropical regions. The technique, based on quantile regression forests, integrates global satellite precipitation datasets from CMORPH, PERSIANN, GSMaP (V6), and 3B42 (V7) and an atmospheric reanalysis precipitation product (EI_GPCC) with daily soil moisture, specific humidity, and terrain elevation datasets. The complex terrain study areas include the Peruvian and Colombian Andes in South America and the Blue Nile in East Africa. Evaluation is performed at a daily time scale and 0.258 spatial resolution based on 13 years (2000-12) of reference rainfall data derived from dense in situ rain gauge networks. The technique is evaluated using K-fold, separately in each region, and leave-one-region-out validation experiments. Comparison of MLPET with the individual satellite and reanalysis precipitation datasets used for the blending and the recent Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation (MSWEP) global precipitation product exhibited improved systematic and random error statistics for all regions. Information on extreme precipitation is essential to managing weather-related risks and designing hydraulic structures. Research attention to frequency analyses based on remotely sensed precipitation datasets, such as those obtained from weather radars and satellites, has been rapidly increasing owing to their potential to provide information for ungauged regions worldwide. Together with the ability to measure the areal scale directly, these analyses promise to overcome the sampling limitations of traditional methods based on rain gauges. This focused review of the literature depicts the state of the art after a decade of efforts, and identifies the crucial gaps in knowledge and methodology that currently hinder the quantitative use of remotely sensed datasets in water resources system design and operation. It concludes by highlighting a set of research directions promising immediate impact with regard to the separation of the sources of uncertainty currently affecting applications based on remotely sensed datasets, the development of statistical methods that can cope with the peculiar characteristics of these datasets, and the improvement of validation methods. Important gains in knowledge are expected from the explicit inclusion of the areal dimension in the analyses and from the fine-scale investigation of extreme precipitation climatology. The lack of knowledge on precipitation frequency over ungauged areas introduces a significant source of uncertainty in relevant engineering designs and risk estimation procedures. Radar-based observations offer precipitation information over ungauged areas and thus have gained increasing attention as a potential solution to this problem. However, due to their relative short data records and inherent uncertainty sources, their ability to provide accurate estimates on the frequency of precipitation extremes requires evaluation. This study involves the evaluation of at-site precipitation frequency estimates from NEXRAD Stage IV radar precipitation dataset. We derive precipitation annual maxima series from the 16yrs record (2002–2017) of NEXRAD and we compare against 539 long-term (50yrs) hourly gauge records. In addition, Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves are estimated from both radar and gauge dataset and compared. IDF estimation is based on fitting the Generalize Extreme Value distribution to annual precipitation maxima. Evaluation is carried out over the contiguous United States and results are grouped and presented for five dominant climate classes and for a range of return period and precipitation durations. NEXRAD was shown to overestimate intensities at shorter durations (1- and 3-h) and low quantiles, while it tends to underestimate higher quantiles at longer durations (24 h). In addition, evaluation of the IDF curves estimated from NEXRAD revealed a distinct geographic dependence with certain regions exhibiting a tendency to overestimation (e.g. east of the Rocky Mountains) or underestimation (Midwest). Overall, this analysis suggests that, while significant discrepancies may exist, there are several cases where NEXRAD provide estimates within the uncertainty bounds of the reference rain gauge dataset. The climate/geographic region and the temporal duration are important aspects to consider. Findings provided in this work on these aspects will hopefully serve as a general guideline for those interested in using NEXRAD estimates for further research or applications on precipitation extremes. Of the boundary conditions that affect the simulation of convective precipitation, soil moisture is one of the most important. In this study, we explore the impact of the soil moisture on convective precipitation, and factors affecting it, through an extensive numerical experiment based on four convective precipitation events that caused moderate to severe flooding in the Gard region of southern France. High-spatial-resolution (1 km) weather simulations were performed using the integrated atmospheric model Regional Atmospheric Modeling System/Integrated Community Limited Area Modeling System (RAMS/ICLAMS). The experimental framework included comparative analysis of five simulation scenarios for each event, in which we varied the magnitude and spatial distribution of the initial volumetric water content using realistic soil moisture fields with different spatial resolution. We used precipitation and surface soil moisture from radar and satellite sensors as references for the comparison of the sensitivity tests. Our results elucidate the complexity of the relationship between soil moisture and convective precipitation, showing that the control of soil water content on partitioning land surface heat fluxes has significant impacts on convective precipitation. Additionally, it is shown how different soil moisture conditions affect the modeled microphysical structure of the clouds, which translates into further changes in the magnitude and distribution of precipitation. This study expands the Metastatistical Extreme Value (MEV) framework to sub-daily rainfall frequency analysis and compares it to extreme value theory methods in presence of short records and measurement errors. Ordinary events are identified based on the temporal autocorrelation of hourly data and modeled with a Weibull distribution. MEV is compared to extreme value theory methods in the estimation of long return period quantiles from actual data (160 rain gauges with at least 60-year record in the contiguous United States) and on synthetic data perturbed with measurement errors typical of remote sensing rainfall estimation. MEV tends to underestimate the 100-year return period quantiles of hourly rainfall when 5–20 years of actual data are used, but presents diminished uncertainty. When a good model of the ordinary events and adequate number of events per year are available, MEV is able to provide information on the 100-year return period quantiles from 10–20, or even 5 years of data with significantly reduced uncertainty (<30% uncertainty for 5-year records). MEV estimates of 100-year return period quantiles from short records are much less sensitive than extreme value theory methods to additive/multiplicative errors, presence of cap values in the estimates, and missing of extreme values. This paper contributes to the predictive understanding of satellite precipitation estimation errors over complex terrain, which is fundamental to the development of error models for improving hydrological applications. This paper focuses on the Trentino-Alto Adige region of the eastern Italian Alps. Rainfall observations over a 10-year period (2000–2009) from a dense rain gauge network in the region are used as reference precipitation. A number of satellite precipitation error properties (probability of detection, false alarm rates, missed events, spatial correlation of the error, and hit biases) are investigated in terms of seasonality, satellite algorithm, rainfall intensity, gauge density, and temporal resolution dependencies. These error parameters are typically used in error models (e.g., SREM2D) and provide the basis for enhancing error scheme development. Three widely used satellite-based precipitation products are employed: 1) the Climate Prediction Center morphing product; 2) the precipitation estimation from remotely sensed imagery using artificial neural networks; and 3) the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission multisatellite precipitation analysis 3B42 near-real-time product. The three products show similar performances, with larger errors during the warm season, characterized by convective storms, and less variability in the cold season, characterized by more organized stratiform systems. Lower biases are depicted at the daily scale with respect to the 3-hourly resolution. The SREM2D error model has the ability to correct the satellite precipitation products, even though attention is needed for potential systematic errors when applying the calibrated model to independent periods or regions. Flash floods develop over small spatiotemporal scales, an attribute that makes their predictability a particularly challenging task. The serious threat they pose for human lives, along with damage estimates that can exceed one billion U.S. dollars in some cases, urge toward more accurate forecasting. Recent advances in computational science combined with state-of-the-art atmospheric models allow atmospheric simulations at very fine (i.e., subkilometer) grid scales, an element that is deemed important for capturing the initiation and evolution of flash flood-triggering storms. This work provides some evidence on the relative gain that can be expected from the adoption of such subkilomeler model grids. A necessary insight into the complex processes of these severe incidents is provided through the simulation of three flood-inducing heavy precipitation events in the Alps for a range of model grid scales (0.25, 1, and 4 km) with the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System-Integrated Community Limited Area Modeling System (RAMS-ICLAMS) atmospheric model. A distributed hydrologic model [Kinematic Local Excess Model (KLEM)] is forced with the various atmospheric simulation outputs to further evaluate the relative impact of atmospheric model resolution on the hydrologic prediction. The use of a finer grid is beneficial in most cases, yet there are events where the improvement is marginal. This work presents a first evaluation of the performance of the Integrated Multisatellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) precipitation product over the upper Blue Nile basin of Ethiopia. One of the unique features of this study is the availability of hourly rainfall measurements from an experimental rain gauge network in the area. Both the uncalibrated and calibrated versions of IMERG are evaluated, and their performance is contrasted against another high-resolution satellite product, which is the Kalman filter (KF)-based Climate Prediction Center (CPC) morphing technique (CMORPH). The analysis is performed for hourly and daily time scales and at spatial scales that correspond to the nominal resolution of satellite products, which is 0.1° spatial resolution. The period analyzed is focused on a single wet season (May-October 2014). Evaluation is performed using several statistical and categorical error metrics, as well as spatial correlation analysis to assess the ability of satellite products to represent spatial variability of precipitation in the area. Results show that both IMERG products have a better bias ratio and correlation coefficient on both time scales as compared to CMORPH. Comparison statistics show a slight improvement in the skill of detecting rainfall events in IMERG products compared to CMORPH. Results also show a decreasing trend in the detection ability of satellite products for increasing threshold values, highlighting the need to further improve detection during heavy precipitation. This study investigates the error characteristics of six quasi-global satellite precipitation products and their error propagation in flow simulations for a range of mountainous basin scales (255-6967 km2) and two different periods (May-August and September-November) in northeast Italy. Statistics describing the systematic and random error, the temporal similarity, and error ratios between precipitation and runoff are presented. Overall, strong over-/underestimation associated with the near-real-time 3B42/Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH) products is shown. Results suggest positive correlation between the systematic error and basin elevation. Performance evaluation of flow simulations yields a higher degree of consistency for the moderate to large basin scales and the May-August period. Gauge adjustment for the different satellite products is shown to moderate their error magnitude and increase their correlation with reference precipitation and streamflow simulations. Moreover, ratios of precipitation to streamflow simulation error metrics show dependencies in terms of magnitude and variability. Random error and temporal dissimilarity are shown to reduce from basin-average rainfall to the streamflow simulations, while the systematic error exhibits no clear pattern in the rainfall-runoff transformation. The error in satellite precipitation-driven complex terrain flood simulations is characterized in this study for eight different global satellite products and 128 flood events over the Eastern Italian Alps. The flood events are grouped according to two flood types: rain floods and flash floods. The satellite precipitation products and runoff simulations are evaluated based on systematic and random error metrics applied on the matched event pairs and basin-scale event properties (i.e., rainfall and runoff cumulative depth and time series shape). Overall, error characteristics exhibit dependency on the flood type. Generally, timing of the event precipitation mass center and dispersion of the time series derived from satellite precipitation exhibits good agreement with the reference; the cumulative depth is mostly underestimated. The study shows a dampening effect in both systematic and random error components of the satellite-driven hydrograph relative to the satellite-retrieved hyetograph. The systematic error in shape of the time series shows a significant dampening effect. The random error dampening effect is less pronounced for the flash flood events and the rain flood events with a high runoff coefficient. This event-based analysis of the satellite precipitation error propagation in flood modeling sheds light on the application of satellite precipitation in mountain flood hydrology. Summary This work aims to evaluate the potential benefits and limitations of radar rainfall estimates for the identification of debris flow occurrence rainfall thresholds. Observations from a C-band weather radar and raingauge data are analyzed for seven convective rainfall events that triggered 117 debris flows in the Upper Adige river basin (Eastern Italian Alps). Four radar rainfall scenarios characterized by incrementally increasing accuracy are used for the estimation of rainfall intensity–duration thresholds. Error sources considered in the radar correction chain include beam blockage, attenuation and vertical profile of reflectivity. The impact of rainfall accuracy on the estimation of the intensity–duration thresholds is analyzed by comparing the thresholds derived from the various radar rainfall scenarios, using the rainfall estimates obtained from the application of the complete correction algorithm as a reference scenario. Results show that the application of the complete correction algorithm improves significantly the accuracy of radar rainfall estimates: Fractional Standard Error is decreased by 20%, Correlation Coefficient is increased by 24% relative to uncorrected data. Correction for atmospheric attenuation is the most important step in the correction chain. The use of uncorrected radar estimates leads to substantially underestimated thresholds with respect to the reference scenario; adjusting radar data for bias is not sufficient to overcome this problem. Radar rainfall estimates which are corrected but not adjusted with raingauge data are able to provide intensity–duration thresholds which are almost indistinguishable from the reference scenario. The derivation of the radar-based threshold is shown to be very sensitive to spatial location errors of rainfall and debris flows. Raingauge-based thresholds are severely underestimated with respect to the reference scenario. This clearly demonstrates the severity of the raingauge-based estimation problem for the derivation of debris flow triggering rainfall and highlights the benefits of using weather radar observations, at least for the case of short duration convective storms. Estimation of rainfall intensity-duration thresholds, used for the identification of debris flow/landslide triggering rainfall events, has been traditionally based on raingauge observations. The main drawback of using information from gauges is that the measurement stations are usually located far away from the debris flow initiation areas. In complex terrain where debris flows take place, the spatial variability of rainfall can be very high and this translates in large uncertainty of raingauge-based estimates of debris flow triggering rainfall. This work focuses on the assessment of the impact of rainfall estimation uncertainty on identification and use of rainfall thresholds for debris flow occurrence. The Upper Adige River basin, Northern Italy, is the area of study. A detailed database of more than 400 identified debris flow initiation points during the period 2000-2010 and a raingauge network of 100 stations comprise the database used for this work. The methodology examines the intensity-duration thresholds derived from a set of raingauges that are assumed to be located at debris flow initiation points (DFRs) and an equivalent set of raingauges assumed to have the role of the closest (to debris flow) available measurement (MRs). A set of reference rainfall thresholds is used to identify the rainfall events at DFRs that "triggered" debris flows (i.e. exceed the threshold). For these same events, the corresponding rainfall thresholds are derived from MR observations. Comparison between the rainfall thresholds derived from DFRs and MRs revealed that uncertainty in rainfall estimation has a major impact on estimated intensity-duration thresholds. Specifically, the results showed that thresholds estimated from MR observations are consistently underestimated. Evaluation of the estimated thresholds for warning procedures showed that while detection is high, the main issue is the high false alarm ratio, which limits the overall accuracy of the procedure. Overall performance on debris flow prediction was shown to be good for low rainfall thresholds and poor for high rainfall thresholds examined. The concept of “catchment-scale storm velocity” quantifies the rate of storm motion up and down the basin accounting for the interaction between the rainfall space–time variability and the structure of the drainage network. It provides an assessment of the impact of storm motion on flood shape. We evaluate the catchment-scale storm velocity for the 29 August 2003 extreme storm that occurred on the 700 km2-wide Fella River basin in the eastern Italian Alps. The storm was characterized by the high rate of motion of convective cells across the basin. Analysis is carried out for a set of basins that range in area from 8 to 623 km2to: (a) determine velocity magnitudes for different sub-basins; (b) examine the relationship of velocity with basin scale and (c) assess the impact of storm motion on simulated flood response. Two spatially distributed hydrological models of varying degree of complexity in the representation of the runoff generation processes are used to evaluate the effects of the storm velocity on flood modelling and investigate model dependencies of the results. It is shown that catchment-scale storm velocity has a non-linear dependence on basin scale and generally exhibits rather moderate values, in spite of the strong kinematic characteristics of individual storm elements. Effective flash flood warning procedures are usually hampered by observational limitations of precipitation over mountainous basins where flash floods occur. Satellite rainfall estimates are available over complex terrain regions, offering a potentially viable solution to the observational coverage problem. However, satellite estimates of heavy rainfall rates are associated with significant biases and random errors that nonlinearly propagate in hydrologic modeling, imposing severe limitations on the use of these products in flood forecasting. In this study, the use of three quasi-global and near-real-time high-resolution satellite rainfall products for simulating flash floods over complex terrain basins are investigated. The study uses a major flash flood event that occurred during 29 August 2003 on a medium size mountainous basin (623 km2) in the eastern Italian Alps. Comparison of satellite rainfall with rainfall derived from gauge-calibrated weather radar estimates showed that although satellite products suffer from large biases they could represent the temporal variability of basin-averaged precipitation. Propagation of satellite rainfall through a distributed hydrologic model revealed that systematic error in rainfall was severely magnified when transformed to error in runoff under dry initial soil conditions. Simulation hydrographs became meaningful only after recalibrating the model for each satellite rainfall input separately. However, the unrealistic values of model parameters after recalibration show that this approach is erroneous and that model recalibration using satellite rainfall data should be treated with care. Overall, this study highlights the need for improvement of satellite rainfall retrieval algorithms in order to allow a more appropriate use of satellite rainfall products for flash flood applications. Summary: The sensitivities of runoff generation to rainfall variability and initial wetness conditions were examined for a major flash flood event that occurred during August 29, 2003 on the upper Tagliamento river basin in the eastern Italian Alps. The Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN)-based Real-time Integrated Basin Simulator (tRIBS) distributed hydrologic model was used to simulate the hydrologic response over a range of sub-basins. The model was calibrated for the single flash flood event based on the observed hydrograph at the outlet of the basin examined (Fella basin) and was validated based on the available observed hydrographs at interior points of the basin. A series of hydrologic simulations were performed for different initial soil moisture conditions and rainfall forcing resolutions in order to evaluate the sensitivity of runoff generation to those variables. Evaluation of the results suggests that both initial wetness and rainfall resolution affect significantly the simulated peak flow and runoff volume during the flash flood event. Sensitivity to initial wetness exhibits a scale dependence with the sensitivity increasing with basin scale. The bias introduced to the basin-averaged rainfall due to aggregation had a significant effect on runoff generation for all basin scales, while the effect of variability smoothing was important only for the larger scale basins. Finally, the sensitivity of the flood hydrograph to rainfall aggregation was shown to be more important for drier initial wetness states. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The study presents a data-based numerical experiment performed to understand the scale relationships of the error propagation of satellite rainfall for flood evaluation applications in complex terrain basins. A satellite rainfall error model is devised to generate rainfall ensembles based on two satellite products with different retrieval accuracies and space–time resolutions. The generated ensembles are propagated through a distributed physics-based hydrologic model to simulate the rainfall–runoff processes at different basin scales. The resulted hydrographs are compared against the hydrograph obtained by using high-resolution radar rainfall as the “reference” rainfall input. The error propagation of rainfall to stream runoff is evaluated for a number of basin scales ranging between 100 and 1200 km2. The results from this study show that (i) use of satellite rainfall for flood simulation depends strongly on the scale of application (catchment area) and the satellite product resolution, (ii) different satellite products perform differently in terms of hydrologic error propagation, and (iii) the propagation of error depends on the basin size; for example, this study shows that small watersheds (<400 km2) exhibit a higher ability in dampening the error from rainfall to runoff than larger-sized watersheds, although the actual error increases as drainage area decreases. Considering the reduction of steep power ramps caused by renewable energy penetration, the present study evaluates the potential of utilizing existing water supply infrastructure as small-scale pumped-hydroelectric storage (PHS) units. A novel methodology is developed that estimates the total storage capacity via the available space in five water supply systems in Connecticut (United States), by solely employing water level measurements and considering a water release schedule that favors power-demand peak reduction. The study culminates in the estimation of optimal areal requirements for hypothesized solar farms neighboring the studied systems, based on deficit minimization between storage capacity and energy generation over the study period. Analysis reveals that, in most cases, the seasonal pattern of the storage capacity is in accordance with the behavior of the corresponding hydraulic head timeseries, showing higher values in winter/autumn. Given certain assumptions regarding the infrastructure, a yearly average of approximately 95 MWh/day can be stored as an intersystem aggregate, illustrating that the amalgamation of existing water supply reservoirs could provide significant energy storage capacity to complement substation variability. Here, we evaluate MEVD-based precipitation frequency analyses for four widely used quasi-global precipitation products (IMERG-v6, GSMaP-v6, CMORPH-v1.0, and MSWEP-v2) over high-density gauge networks in five hydroclimatic regions (Austria, Italy, Florida, Texas, and Arizona). We show dependence of MEVD-based estimation error on the characteristics of each dataset and the hydroclimatic region. Additionally, we evaluate the sub-grid variability of extreme precipitation and demonstrate the impact of spatial scale mismatch (that is, single in-situ gauge versus satellite pixel) on the frequency analysis of extremes. This work provides an assessment of the use of MEVD for estimating precipitation extremes from globally available datasets and an understanding of the variability of sub-daily precipitation extremes in different hydroclimatic regions of the world. In mountain basins, the use of long-range operational weather radars is often associated with poor quantitative precipitation estimation due to a number of challenges posed by the complexity of terrain. As a result, the applicability of radar-based precipitation estimates for hydrological studies is often limited over areas that are in close proximity to the radar. This study evaluates the advantages of using X-band polarimetric (XPOL) radar as a means to fill the coverage gaps and improve complex terrain precipitation estimation and associated hydrological applications based on a field experiment conducted in an area of Northeast Italian Alps characterized by large elevation differences. The corresponding rainfall estimates from two operational C-band weather radar observations are compared to the XPOL rainfall estimates for a near-range (10–35 km) mountainous basin (64 km2). In situ rainfall observations from a dense rain gauge network and two disdrometers (a 2D-video and a Parsivel) are used for ground validation of the radar-rainfall estimates. Ten storm events over a period of two years are used to explore the differences between the locally deployed XPOL vs. longer-range operational radar-rainfall error statistics. Hourly aggregate rainfall estimates by XPOL, corrected for rain-path attenuation and vertical reflectivity profile, exhibited correlations between 0.70 and 0.99 against reference rainfall data and 21% mean relative error for rainfall rates above 0.2 mm h−1. The corresponding metrics from the operational radar-network rainfall products gave a strong underestimation (50–70%) and lower correlations (0.48–0.81). For the two highest flow-peak events, a hydrological model (Kinematic Local Excess Model) was forced with the different radar-rainfall estimations and in situ rain gauge precipitation data at hourly resolution, exhibiting close agreement between the XPOL and gauge-based driven runoff simulations, while the simulations obtained by the operational radar rainfall products resulted in a greatly underestimated runoff response. The concurrence of flash floods and debris flows is of particular concern, because it may amplify the hazard corresponding to the individual generative processes. This paper presents a coupled modelling framework for the predictions of flash flood response and of the occurrence of debris flows initiated by channel bed mobilization. The framework combines a spatially distributed flash flood response model and a debris flow initiation model to define a threshold value for the peak flow which permits identification of channelized debris flow initiation. The threshold is defined over the channel network as a function of the upslope area and of the local channel bed slope, and it is based on assumptions concerning the properties of the channel bed material and of the morphology of the channel network. The model is validated using data from an extreme rainstorm that impacted the 140 km 2 Vizze basin in the Eastern Italian Alps on August 4–5, 2012. The results show that the proposed methodology has improved skill in identifying the catchments where debris-flows are triggered, compared to the use of simpler thresholds based on rainfall properties. The performance of six satellite-based and three newly released reanalysis rainfall estimates are evaluated at daily time scale and spatial grid size of 0.25 degrees during the period of 2000 to 2013 over the Upper Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia, with the view of improving the reliability of precipitation estimates of the wet (June to September) and secondary rainy (March to May) seasons. The study evaluated both adjusted and unadjusted satellite-based products of TMPA, CMORPH, PERSIANN, and ECMWF ERA-Interim reanalysis as well as Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation (MSWEP) estimates. Among the six satellite-based rainfall products, adjusted CMORPH exhibits the best accuracy of the wet season rainfall estimate. In the secondary rainy season, unadjusted CMORPH and 3B42V7 are nearly equivalent in terms of bias, POD, and CSI error metrics. All error metric statistics show that MSWEP outperform both unadjusted and gauge adjusted ERA-Interim estimates. The magnitude of error metrics is linearly increasing with increasing percentile threshold values of gauge rainfall categories. Overall, all precipitation datasets need further improvement in terms of detection during the occurrence of high rainfall intensity. Forecasting the occurrence of debris flows is fundamental for issuing hazard warnings, and often focuses on rainfall as a triggering agent and on the use of empirical rainfall thresholds based on rain gauge observations. A recognized component of the uncertainty associated with the use of rainfall thresholds is related to the sampling of strongly varying rainfall variability with sparse rain gauge networks. In this work we examine the spatial distribution of rainfall depth in areas up to 10 km from the debris flow initiation points as a function of return period, and we exploit this information to analyze the errors expected in the estimation of debris flow triggering rainfall when rain gauge data are used. In particular, we investigate the impact of rain gauge density and of the use of different interpolation methods. High-resolution, adjusted radar rainfall estimates, representing the best available spatially-distributed rainfall estimates at the debris flows initiation point and in the surrounding area, are sampled by stochastically generated rain gauge networks characterized by varying densities. Debris flow triggering rainfall is estimated by means of three rainfall interpolation methods: nearest neighbor, inverse distance weighting and ordinary kriging. On average, triggering rainfall shows a local peak corresponding to the debris flow initiation point, with a decay of rainfall with distance which increases with the return period of the triggering rainfall. Interpolation of the stochastically generated rain gauge measurements leads to an underestimation of the triggering rainfall that, irrespective of the interpolation methods, increases with the return period and decreases with the rain gauge density. For small return period events and high rain gauge density, the differences among the methods are minor. With increasing the return period and decreasing the rain gauge density, the nearest neighbor method is less biased, because it makes use only of the closest rain gauge to the debris flow initiation point. On the contrary, inverse distance weighting and ordinary kriging, which are using rain gauges located farther from the debris flows in addition to the closest one, exhibit negative biases that increase with return period. The standard deviation of the interpolated values is larger when the nearest neighbor is used with respect to inverse distance weighting and ordinary kriging. In response to the vital role of geomorphological analysis in natural hazards study, geomorphology, distributed hydrology and other related disciplines, we present the first global basin morphometric product of 30 characteristics, 9 archived elementary including stream order, stream number, stream length, basin relief, basin length, basin perimeter, maximal flow length, down valley length and overland flow length, and 21 derivable from these elementary morphometric characteristics. Characteristics of basins discharging to every grid-cell of the global earth surface are generated at 30 arcsec resolution from the remotely sensed HydroSHEDS dataset. This product does not exist in previous literature because tree-structural grid-cells bring large computational redundancy to basin delineation and thus computing basin characteristics. To generate this product within a reasonable timeframe, we introduce in this paper an efficient framework to reduce the algorithm complexity to linear, O( N ). Aim: Existing abiotic and biotic threats to plant species (e.g., disease, drought, invasive species) affect their capacity to recover post‐fire. We use a new, globally applicable framework to assess the vulnerability of 26,062 Australian plant species to a suite of active threats after the 2019–2020 fires. Location: Australia. Time period: 2019–2020. Major species studied: Plants. Methods: Spatial data for existing threats and information on species‐level susceptibility were combined with estimates of the extent of range burnt in southern Australia (> 22°S) to assign species against 10 criteria into vulnerability categories (high, medium, low, none, data deficient). We explore in detail results for three threats (drought, disease, feral animals), highlighting where impacts from multiple threats ranked high vulnerability may compound to reduce post‐fire recovery. Results: Analysis of the full suite of 10 vulnerability criteria, which encompass a broad range of threats, revealed large numbers of species vulnerable to poor post‐fire recovery from one or more different hazards (high vulnerability: 1,243 species; medium vulnerability: 2,450 species). Collectively, 457 plant species that burnt extensively (> 50%) across their range are highly vulnerable to poor recovery due to exposure to pre‐fire drought conditions (235 species), disease (186 species), or feral animals (97 species). Of these 457 species, 61 are vulnerable to more than one of these three threats, highlighting how a suite of interacting hazards can impact plant recovery after fire. Main conclusions: While fire can renew plant populations by stimulating recruitment and resetting competitive interactions, the presence of existing threats in post‐fire landscapes jeopardizes recovery. The simultaneous impact of multiple threats that impact recovery can create a suite of hazards that contribute to declines and, potentially, extinction. Sub-Saharan Africa's economy and livelihood are primarily dependent on agriculture, which makes it highly vulnerable to the impacts of extreme weather events and climate change. Modelling and quantifying extreme rainfall and its temporal changes in such environments could thus provide crucial information for design, insurance, management, ecology and climate adaptation. Rain gauge networks in the area are relatively sparse, and often characterized by missing data, which hamper the use of extreme-value methods for estimating extreme precipitation quantiles. In this study, we adopted the Simplified Metastatistical Extreme Value approach for the estimation of extreme return levels based on ordinary events (i.e., all the independent realizations of the variable of interest), which was shown to be more accurate than traditional extreme-value methods in the presence of short data records. We examined data from 66 rain gauges covering diverse hydro-climatic regions across Ghana with the aim of (i) validating the robustness of the statistical approach, (ii) characterising the climatic and altitudinal controls on the occurrence, frequency and intensity of rainfall extremes, and (iii) quantifying recent changes in the characteristics of extremes. We found that a two-parameter Weibull distribution well approximates the tail of the daily rainfall distribution throughout the area. Our statistical approach can quantify extremes with largely reduced uncertainties (7–17% uncertainty in the 100-year return levels computed using 10 years of data versus 11–62% of extreme-value based methods). Extreme precipitation statistics (daily intensity distribution, number of wet days, extreme rainfall quantiles) are found to significantly depend on latitude, so that the four latitudinally layered hydro-climatic regions typically adopted in the area well represent spatial variations. Elevation significantly affects the tail heaviness of the daily intensity distribution and thus extreme rainfall quantiles. Temporal changes during the period 1978–2018 are found to be non-homogeneous in the area as well as within the four hydro-climatic regions, but are homogeneous in three altitude-based regions. We report contrasting trends in extreme return levels in low-elevation (<200 m a.s.l.) and hilly regions, related to contrasting changes in the daily intensity distribution. Statistically significant positive trends in extreme daily rainfall amounts are observed in the inland low-elevation region of the Volta river basin, which call for further investigation of changes in future precipitation extremes in this extremely important hydrological region in Sub-Saharan Africa. Accurate quantitative precipitation estimation over mountainous basins is of great importance because of their susceptibility to hazards such as flash floods, shallow landslides, and debris flows, triggered by heavy precipitation events (HPEs). In situ observations over mountainous areas are limited, but currently available satellite precipitation products can potentially provide the precipitation estimation needed for hydrological applications. In this study, four widely used satellite-based precipitation products [Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) 3B42, version 7 (3B42-V7), and in near-real time (3B42-RT); Climate Prediction Center (CPC) morphing technique (CMORPH); and Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Imagery Using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN)] are evaluated with respect to their performance in capturing the properties of HPEs over different basin scales. Evaluation is carried out over the upper Adige River basin (eastern Italian Alps) for an 8-yr period (2003-10). Basin-averaged rainfall derived from a dense rain gauge network in the region is used as a reference. Satellite precipitation error analysis is performed for warm (May-August) and cold (September-December) season months as well as for different quantile ranges of basin-averaged precipitation accumulations. Three error metrics and a score system are introduced to quantify the performances of the various satellite products. Overall, no single precipitation product can be considered ideal for detecting and quantifying HPE. Results show better consistency between gauges and the two 3B42 products, particularly during warm season months that are associated with high-intensity convective events. All satellite products are shown to have a magnitude-dependent error ranging from overestimation at low precipitation regimes to underestimation at high precipitation accumulations; this effect is more pronounced in the CMORPH and PERSIANN products. Heavy precipitation events (HPE) can incur significant economic losses as well as losses of lives through catastrophic floods. Evidence of increasing heavy precipitation at continental and global scales clearly emphasizes the need to accurately quantify these phenomena. The current study focuses on the error analysis of two of the main quasi-global, high-resolution satellite products [Climate Prediction Center (CPC) morphing technique (CMORPH) and Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Imagery Using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN)], using rainfall data derived from high-quality weather radar rainfall estimates as a reference. This analysis is based on seven major flood-inducing HPEs that developed over complex terrain areas in northern Italy (Fella and Sessia regions) and southern France (Cevennes-Vivarais region). The storm cases were categorized as convective or stratiform based on their characteristics, including rainfall intensity, duration, and area coverage. The results indicate that precipitation type has an effect on the algorithm's ability to capture rainfall effectively. Convective storm cases exhibited greater rain rate retrieval errors, while low rain rates in stratiform-type systems are not well captured by the satellite algorithms investigated in this study, thus leading to greater missed rainfall volumes. Overall, CMORPH exhibited better error statistics than PERSIANN for the HPEs of this study. • The NCAR ensemble is able to represent the spatial and temporal characteristics of soil state across the CONUS. • Soil state estimates from the NCAR ensemble exhibited better performance compared to GFS over west and southeast CONUS. • The ensemble spread characteristics suggest that future limited-area continuously cycling EnKF systems could successfully assimilate soil state observations. Accurate characterization of soil state is imperative for weather and climate research, hydrological modeling, agriculture, water resources management, and drought monitoring. Limited-area data assimilation (DA) systems can provide high-resolution real-time soil state analyses. However, soil state representations from regional continuously cycling DA systems have not been examined. This study evaluates soil moisture and temperature estimates and spread characteristics from a real-time, limited-area, continuously-cycling ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) data assimilation (DA) system run at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) for 2.7 years over the conterminous United States (CONUS). Soil moisture and temperature data from both the EnKF and operational Global Forecast System (GFS) analysis are compared against the North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS-2) soil state estimates. Results demonstrate the continuously-cycling EnKF was generally able to represent the spatial and temporal characteristics of soil moisture and temperature across the CONUS, demonstrating the feasibility of using limited-area continuously cycling EnKFs as a method to improve simulations of soil moisture and temperature. Soil state estimates from the NCAR ensemble exhibited lower Bias and RMSE compared to GFS analyses over west and southeast CONUS. Additionally, the ensemble spread characteristics suggest that future limited-area continuously cycling EnKF systems could successfully assimilate both in situ and remotely-sensed soil moisture and temperature observations to further improve soil state analyses. This paper presents an in-depth investigation of the error properties of two high-resolution global-scale satellite rain retrievals verified against rainfall fields derived from a moderate-resolution rain-gauge network (25-30-km intergage distances) covering a region in the midwestern U.S. (Oklahoma Mesonet). Evaluated satellite retrievals include the NASA Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission multisatellite precipitation analysis and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center morphing technique. The two satellite products are contrasted against a rain-gauge-adjusted radar rainfall product from the WSR-88D network in continental U.S. This paper presents an error characterization of the Mesonet rainfall fields based on an independent small-scale, but very dense (100-m intergage distances), rain-gauge network (named Micronet). The Mesonet error analysis, although significantly lower than the corresponding error statistics derived for the satellite and radar products, demonstrates the need to benchmark reference data sources prior to their quantitative use in validating remote sensing retrievals. In terms of the remote sensing rainfall products, this paper provides quantitative comparisons between the two satellite estimates and the most definitive rain-gauge-adjusted radar rainfall estimates at corresponding spatial and temporal resolutions (25 km and 3 hourly). The present study uses hourly rainfall measurements from 36 raingauge stations in the northeastern United States with more than 55 years of recordings, to assess the accuracy and robustness of three conceptually different parametric approaches to produce intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves from rainfall records: (a) the well celebrated parametric IDF model based on annual maxima (AM) series, initially introduced by Rossi and Villani (1994) and later extended by Koutsoyiannis et al. (1998), (b) a peaks-over-threshold (PoT) model based on proper fitting of a reparametrized generalized Pareto (GP) distribution to the scaled excesses of the average rainfall intensity over various durations d , and (c) the analytical approximation introduced by Langousis et al. (2009) for estimation of multifractal (MF) rainfall maxima. Since its development, the third approach has never been tested in real world applications, and/or compared to routinely used approaches for IDF curve estimation. The obtained results show that the MF approach may constitute an important tool for hydrological applications, as it produces more accurate and robust IDF estimates than the other two approaches, irrespective of the duration d and return period T of interest, especially in cases where rainfall records exhibit significant length limitations. In addition, the parameters of the MF analytical approximation are found to be descriptive of the local topography and rainfall climatology of the region, providing a physically meaningful modeling setting that is particularly suited for regional frequency analysis and IDF estimation at ungauged locations. • Weibull distribution models well sub-daily precipitation extremes over CONUS. • Significant relation between storm characteristics and statistics of extremes is found. • Tail heaviness depends on climate type and storm characteristics. In this paper we use a statistical framework to analyze the relation between storm properties and the statistics of extreme precipitation. We identify storm events using a 24-hour dry hiatus separation. We investigate the statistics of the hourly maximum intensity for the heaviest storm events at durations of 1 and 24 h. A two-parameter Weibull distribution is used to represent precipitation frequencies at several stations from a quality-controlled hourly precipitation dataset over the contiguous United States, encompassing seven climate zones. The Spearman correlation between the distribution parameters and a selection of storm properties (duration, intensity, decorrelation time, convective-like ratio) and station properties (elevation and latitude) is used to measure the relation of these properties with the statistics of extreme precipitation. Our results indicate that observed annual maximum hourly precipitation over the entire study area are likely samples from the used distribution, implying that a two-parameter Weibull distribution is suitable for modeling hourly and 24-hour precipitation extremes over the contiguous United States. The spatial variability of shape parameters obtained for hourly events showed lighter tails in the west coast when compared to the rest of CONUS, while the central-north displays heavier tails. We identify statistically significant links (at the 95% confidence level) between storm characteristics connected with the underlying processes (e.g., typical storm duration, typical temporal autocorrelation, proportion of convective-like storms) and the parameters of the distribution. Notably, characteristics typical of convective precipitation, e.g., sharp decorrelation time and high hourly intensity, tend to be related to distributions with heavier tails. This study uses an analytical hydrological framework to investigate the error propagation from satellite precipitation products to hydrological simulations. Specifically, the analytical formulation of the framework allows linking the error in hydrograph properties (i.e., cumulative volume, centroid, and dispersion) to the space-time characteristics of error in satellite-precipitation, runoff generation, and routing. Main finding from this study are that (i) the error in spatial and temporal covariance between rainfall and runoff generation is not contributing significantly to the error in cumulative volume of flood events; (ii) errors in runoff generation and routing time are of equal importance in terms of the overall error in the arrival of flood event centroid; and (iii) errors in the variability of runoff generation time is the main contributor to the error in dispersion of flood event hydrograph. Furthermore, sensitivity tests show that errors in hydrograph properties are strongly correlated with errors in the space-time characteristics of precipitation, runoff generation and routing parameters estimated by the analytical framework. An extensive evaluation of nine global-scale high-resolution satellite-based rainfall (SBR) products is performed using a minimum of 6 years (within the period of 2000-13) of reference rainfall data derived from rain gauge networks in nine mountainous regions across the globe. The SBR products are compared to a recently released global reanalysis dataset from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The study areas include the eastern Italian Alps, the Swiss Alps, the western Black Sea of Turkey, the French Cévennes, the Peruvian Andes, the Colombian Andes, the Himalayas over Nepal, the Blue Nile in East Africa, Taiwan, and the U.S. Rocky Mountains. Evaluation is performed at annual, monthly, and daily time scales and 0.25° spatial resolution. The SBR datasets are based on the following retrieval algorithms: Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), the NOAA/Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH), Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN), and Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP). SBR products are categorized into those that include gauge adjustment versus unadjusted. Results show that performance of SBR is highly dependent on the rainfall variability. Many SBR products usually underestimate wet season and overestimate dry season precipitation. Flood prediction across scales and more specifically in ungauged areas remains a great challenge that limits the efficiency of flood risk mitigation strategies and disaster preparedness. Building upon the recent success of Machine Learning (ML) models on streamflow prediction, this work presents a prototype ML-based framework for flood warning and flood peak prediction. The fundamental elements of the proposed system consist of a) a Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) model for classifying storm events to Flood/no-Flood given a threshold based on the 90th flow percentile and b) the flood peak prediction models. The selected ML-models for flood peak prediction are the Histogram based Gradient Boosting Regressor and the Random Forest. One of the strengths, and reason for selection, of these decision-tree models is their degree of interpretability. This is exploited in the study to help us spatially disentangle the role of both the static and dynamic drivers of flood peak response. Our analysis is presented for 18 distinct hydroclimatic regions across the contiguous US. Results reveal a significant regional dependence on both predictive performance and dominant flood predictors, which emphasize the variability in the complexity of a catchment's hydrologic behavior as well as its impact on forecasting flood response. Evaluation of the drivers of flood peaks noted distinct dependencies among the dynamic and static predictors considered in our models for flood peaks of different severity. Specifically, low-moderate flood events showed a clear preponderance for the static catchment attributes over dynamic predictors like precipitation whereas precipitation was the dominant driver for the highest flood peaks. The proposed flood peak prediction models were compared against a state-of-the-art LSTM model and were shown to outperform in ungauged basins for the majority of basins. Overall, the proposed system classified storms correctly for >80% in all cases and exhibited a percent relative difference in flood peak estimates of <30% in most cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate, reliable, and high spatio-temporal resolution precipitation data are vital for many applications, including the study of extreme events, hydrological modeling, water resource management, and hydroclimatic research in general. In this study, we performed a systematic review of the available literature to assess the performance of the Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) products across different geographical locations and climatic conditions around the globe. Asia, and in particular China, are the subject of the largest number of IMERG evaluation studies on the continental and country level. When compared to ground observational records, IMERG is found to vary with seasons, as well as precipitation type, structure, and intensity. It is shown to appropriately estimate and detect regional precipitation patterns, and their spatial mean, while its performance can be improved over mountainous regions characterized by orographic precipitation, complex terrains, and for winter precipitation. Furthermore, despite IMERG's better performance compared to other satellite products in reproducing spatio-temporal patterns and variability of extreme precipitation, some limitations were found regarding the precipitation intensity. At the temporal scales, IMERG performs better at monthly and annual time steps than the daily and sub-daily ones. Finally, in terms of hydrological application, the use of IMERG has resulted in significant discrepancies in streamflow simulation. However, and most importantly, we find that each new version that replaces the previous one, shows substantial improvement in almost every spatiotemporal scale and climatic condition. The study presents an in-depth investigation of the properties of remotely sensed rainfall error propagation in the prediction of near-surface soil moisture from a land surface model (LSM). Specifically, two error sources are compared: rainfall forcing due to estimation error by remote sensing techniques and the representation of land–atmospheric processes due to LSM uncertainty [the Community Land Model, version 3.5 (CLM3.5), was used in this particular study]. CLM3.5 is forced by three remotely sensed precipitation products, namely, two satellite-based estimates—NASA’s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) multisatellite precipitation analysis and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH)—and a rain gauge-adjusted radar–rainfall product from the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network. The error analysis is performed for the warm seasons of 2004 and 2006 and is facilitated through the use of in situ measurements of soil moisture, rainfall, and other meteorological variables from a network of stations capturing the state of Oklahoma (Oklahoma Mesonet). The study also presents a rigorous benchmarking of the Mesonet network as to its accuracy in deriving area rainfall estimates at the resolution of satellite products (0.25° and 3 h) through comparisons against the most definitive measurements of a smaller-yet-denser network of rain gauges in southwestern Oklahoma (Micronet). The study compares error statistics between modeling and precipitation error sources and between the various remote sensing techniques. Results are contrasted between the relatively moist summer period of 2004 to the drier summer period of 2006, indicating model and error propagation dependencies. An intercomparison between rainfall and modeling error shows that the two error sources are of similar magnitudes in the case of high modeling accuracy (i.e., 2004), whereas the contribution of rainfall forcing error to the uncertainty of soil moisture prediction can be lower when the model’s efficiency skill is relatively low (i.e., 2006). Rainfall on the sea surface generates a loud and distinctive sound underwater. This sound propagates downward and attenuates, producing an effective listening area or an equivalent "catchment basin" for a listening device that is a function of depth and frequency. Acoustical measurements of rainfall are reported from four passive aquatic listeners (PALs) at 60-, 200-, 1000-, and 2000-m depths from a mooring in the Ionian Sea off the southwestern coast of Greece (37N, 21.5E) from January to April 2004. These measurements are compared to colocated high-resolution X-band dual-polarization (XPOL) radar rainfall measurements. The XPOL radar reports the spatial distribution of rainfall variability over the listening areas of the PALs. Four quality-controlled rainfall events, including drizzle, squall line, and heavy rainfall, are presented in this study. The radar rainfall is spatially averaged over the mooring and compared with the four different acoustic measurements at different depths. To understand the issue of spatial averaging, quantitative comparisons are presented, showing a high correlation between the acoustic measurements and the area-averaged radar estimates at corresponding resolutions. Abstract: Increasing our understanding of the small scale variability of drop size distributions (DSD), and therefore of several bulk characteristics of rainfall processes, has major implications for our interpretation of the remote sensing based estimates of precipitation and its uncertainty. During the spring and summer of 2002 the authors conducted the DEVEX experiment (disdrometer evaluation experiment) to compare measurements of natural rain made with three different types of disdrometers collocated at the Iowa City Municipal Airport in Iowa City, Iowa in the Midwestern United States. This paper focuses on the evaluation of the instruments rather than analysis of the hydrometeorological aspects of the observed events. The comparison demonstrates discrepancies between instruments. The authors discuss the systematic and random effects in terms of rainfall quantities, drop size distribution properties, and the observed drop size vs. velocity relationships. Since the instruments were collocated, the effects of the natural variability of rain are reduced some with time integration, isolating the instrumental differences. The authors discuss the status of DSD measurement technologies and the implications for a range of hydrologic applications from remote sensing of rainfall to atmospheric deposition to soil erosion and sediment transport in the environment. The spatial and temporal scale of flash flood occurrence provides limited opportunities for observations and measurements using conventional monitoring networks, turning the focus to event-based, post-disaster studies. Post-flood surveys exploit field evidence to make indirect discharge estimations, aiming to improve our understanding of hydrological response dynamics under extreme meteorological forcing. However, discharge estimations are associated with demanding fieldwork aiming to record in small timeframes delicate data and data prone-to-be-lost and achieve the desired accuracy in measurements to minimize various uncertainties of the process. In this work, we explore the potential of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) technology, in combination with the Structure for Motion (SfM) and optical granulometry techniques in peak discharge estimations. We compare the results of the UAS-aided discharge estimations to estimates derived from differential Global Navigation Satellite System (d-GNSS) surveys and hydrologic modelling. The application in the catchment of the Soures torrent in Greece, after a catastrophic flood, shows that the UAS-aided method determined peak discharge with accuracy, providing very similar values compared to the ones estimated by the established traditional approach. The technique proved to be particularly effective, providing flexibility in terms of resources and timing, although there are certain limitations to its applicability, related mostly to the optical granulometry as well as the condition of the channel. The great success of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and its successor Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) has accelerated the development of global high-resolution satellite-based precipitation products (SPP). However, the quantitative accuracy of SPPs has to be evaluated before using these datasets in water resource applications. This study evaluates the following GPM-era and TRMM-era SPPs based on two years (2014–2015) of reference daily precipitation data from rain gauge networks in ten mountainous regions: Integrated Multi-SatellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG, version 05B and version 06B), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/Climate Prediction Center Morphing Method (CMORPH), Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP), and Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation (MSWEP), which represents a global precipitation data-blending product. The evaluation is performed at daily and annual temporal scales, and at 0.1 deg grid resolution. It is shown that GSMaPV07 surpass the performance of IMERGV06B Final for almost all regions in terms of systematic and random error metrics. The new orographic rainfall classification in the GSMaPV07 algorithm is able to improve the detection of orographic rainfall, the rainfall amounts, and error metrics. Moreover, IMERGV05B showed significantly better performance, capturing the lighter and heavier precipitation values compared to IMERGV06B for almost all regions due to changes conducted to the morphing, where motion vectors are derived using total column water vapor for IMERGV06B.
